p Re-elected Northland MP Mike Sabin celebrates Saturday’s election result with supporters at his campaign headquarters in Whangarei

His second term was endorsed by 16,827 voters, more than twice that of Labour candidate Willow-Jean Prime. “It was a pleasing result,” says Mr Sabin, adding he has 10 priorities for Northland over the next three years, most concerning economic development. “I want to make sure Northland’s economic potential continues to be realised. We need more business investment. I want to make sure Northland is a good place to work and invest.” “Education will be another priority area. We’ve got some serious issues

in education. School rolls are dropping and a number of schools are under statutory management. We need to have schools with quality management that provides students with the skills they need to succeed in the world.” Referring to his Bill in the last parliament that validated illegally prepared rate demands by the Kaipara District Council over the Mangawhai sewage disaster, he added: “I didn’t win any popularity contests in Mangawhai and that had some implications.

“But as I explained at a public meeting there, you don’t just elect an MP to do the easy stuff.” With Prime Minister John Key set to form a new government and fresh talent to replace retiring ministers, Mr Sabin is cagey about whether he’ll get the call. “I have no idea of what my chances are. That’s up to the prime minister. But all MPs aspire to higher office. If I get the call, I’d be honoured to serve.” Northland’s political scene also changed, with Labour’s Kelvin Davis defeating Internet Mana’s Hone Harawira by 1,119 votes in Te Tai Tokerau.

If I Stay A sweeping American romantic drama, centred around the family of Mia, a cellist and ex-girlfriend of up and coming rock star Adam Wilde. The story unfolds after the family’s car crashes in snowy conditions, leading to a series of flashbacks which reveal the past of Mia’s relationship with Adam, and that of her parents, leading to a decision that’s literally life or death.

Boxtrolls From the creative minds who brought us ‘Coraline’ and ‘Paranorman’ comes a Victorianera tale about an orphan boy trying to find his way in the world. This isn’t Charles Dickens, though - this lad was raised by a loveably gruesome family of subterranean trolls. When his adopted clan are threatened by evil pest exterminators, it’s up to him to save the day.

Adapted from the farm ore grim and violent graphic novel from the 1990s, this all-action thrill ride follows a quartet of martial-arts-trained mutants living in the sewer system and battling the terrorist troops of the evil Foot Clan, led by the cybernetic samurai known as the Shredder. Silly good fun for young and old!

Hip-hoperation

Planes - Fire and Rescue After the huge success of Planes (itself a spin off from the huge Cars franchise), DisneyPixar has taken us back to the world of living machines, once again catching up with the spirited crop-sprayer Dusty and his friends. This time the ex-racer is taking on a new challenge, joining the heroic Blade Ranger and his team to fight a huge forest fire.

For those who think hip hop is just for the young, this movie sets the record straight. And then scratches it a bit, as a troupe of Kiwi retirees go from the old folks’ home to the Vegas stage as the world’s oldest hip hop dance troupe. Life affirming, fun and with a fresh soundtrack to boot. ★

p The Aoroa Branch of Rural Women of New Zealand celebrated their birthday at Honeycroft recently, enjoying a shared lunch, lively conversation and poetry. Honeycroft is Les and Pam Parkinson’s model pioneer farm at Arapohue, on which they handmilk cows, make cheese and live a largely colonial lifestyle. “It was something a little different,” says member Kath Gillespie. “Pam talked to us about her lifestyle and how and why shes does what she does.” photo courtesy of Debbie Evans

The Lunchbox A mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.

p Dargaville Racecourse was the venue for the Northland Primary Schools Cross Country Championships last week. The event attracted hundreds of young runners from 50 schools around Northland. Kaipara kids ensured there was plenty to cheer about with Jesse Goodfellow from Maungaturoto School, Cain Fallon from Mangawhai Beach School and Reece Neho from Dargaville Intermediate, finishing first in their respective races. The rain stayed away, although the region’s washing machines subsequently worked overtime cleaning mud-covered running gear.

Four wheel fun

The Last Saint Minka is a teenage Polynesian boy living in the heart of the city. With his P-addicted mother well on the way to going completely off the rails, three people enter his life - each with a promise - each with the power to destroy. Powerful Kiwi film-making with heart.

Housebound Another cracker of a Kiwi horror flick, in the tradition of Peter Jackson’s early work. Sentenced to house arrest, Kylie is forced to move in with her parents, who seem strangely cheerful about the prospect of their home being haunted. Winner of the coveted HR Giger prize at horror’s ‘Dead by Dawn’ festival.

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared With a title like that, you know that this Swedish comedy is going to be offbeat and weird - and you would be right! When Mr Karlsson ‘escapes’ from an old folks’ home on his 100th birthday, there’s an added cause for concern. He’s not only out to recapture his youth, he’s also one of the world’s top experts on explosives.

The group of eight vehicles experienced some of the fun the west coast has to offer, going through causeways, dunes and off road tracks. Even though the day wasn’t ideal for outdoor activities the group didn’t seem bothered by it — the more water the better they said.

Coastal park to protect endangered birds u by Colin Patterson

Last week’s announcement of a 10 km long coastal park south of Mangawhai is expected to end a decade long controversy over development on a pristine stretch of coastline.

p One of the most endangered and rarest birds in the world - the fairy tern will be protected by a new exclusive zone on the Eastern Kaipara’s Te Arai coastline

The settlement limited the development to a further 43 houses, in addition to three already approved. There are also a number of conditions, including a no pets policy, building setback rules and limits on access to the beach. It also provided for a 172ha coastal park encompassing some of the most sensitive land. Fair y Tern Charitable Trust chairwoman Heather Rogan says last week’s announcement implements that settlement. But originally developers hoped to build more than 1400 houses. But after nearly 10 years of planning battles and consent hearings, a mediated settlement announced in August between the developer Te Arai Coastal Lands and the Te Arai Point Preservation Society and the New Zealand Fairy Tern Charitable Trust has brought the dispute to a conclusion. it could not take place until Auckland Council’s Parks and Reserves Committee had formally agreed to the new park. “We’re pleased with the outcome,” says

Mrs Rogan. “There’s a much improved reserve design. We’re pleased there is to be no further development and no pets allowed.” She says the settlement also provides for a comprehensive site management plan. “We’re hoping we can all work together to make it a sensible development.” The two groups held a number of meetings with the developer during the mediation process. The agreement also provides for the establishment of a community liaison group. Although the two groups failed to achieve their aim of stopping the development, Mrs Rogan believes the settlement will protect the endangered fairy tern and dotterel, both of which nest at Te Arai Point. “We’re cautiously optimistic, as long as everyone sticks to the agreement.” The settlement allows iwi group Te Uri a Hau to benefit from land it bought following a Waitangi Tribunal settlement in 2002. ¢

Young singers shine at festival

Living proof that hard work pays off, Haydn Dyer won four trophies, including the Overall Intermediate Championship, at the Performing Arts Festival for singing earlier this month. Haydn suffers from a hearing impairment and wears a hearing aid but that only encourages him to try harder. His preference is for musical theatre songs but his teacher Maura Flower encouraged him to try every section — including German Lieder and Italian Classical — to help him develop as an all rounder. Celia Bailey, who is taught by Peter Flower, won two trophies and the runner up prize for the Intermediate Championship. In the Junior Championship, Kate Cotching of Maungaturoto was runner up overall. Sewage costs questioned Young league player u by Colin Patterson

Te Kopuru residents are hoping information from Kaipara District Council’s archives will help determine whether they are being forced to pay twice for the town’s sewerage scheme.

p Keith Ladbrook is seeking answers on what has happened with rates money paid by residents to fund Te Kopuru’s sewerage scheme

The scheme was built in 1980 and was funded through a targeted rate to be paid over 20 years. Resident Keith Ladbrook, supported by 181 other people who signed a petition to the council’s draft Annual Plan, says the scheme should have been paid off long ago, with residents now only liable for ongoing running costs. But earlier this year council commissioners told residents their rates would have to rise to pay for desludging and a meter to monitor outflows. Mr Ladbrook says residents are happy to pay operating costs. But they don’t see why they should pay again for capital costs. “The people have paid for the system. We’re not a wealthy community and we are being hammered.”

looks to the big time u by Colin Patterson

Michael Prakash is turning heads in the world of rugby league. The Year 11 student at Dargaville High School has made the Northland Swords under 18 team, just six months after taking up the game. He is the only Kaipara player in the team. Michael started playing league during a short stint in Fiji. “Before that I played rugby. But I got bored with it.” He believes league is where the action is. “I like the contact. It’s a fast game.” He plays for Marist-Whangarei’s under 18 team as a fullback or wing. After the season finished two months ago, he was asked to trial for the Swords. He’s already played two games on the wing for the Swords and is likely to play more when the team plays a tournament in Rotorua this weekend. Michael’s father Joseph is delighted with his son’s success. “It’s very unusual for an Indian to play rugby league.” Michael is mixing league with his studies. Physical Education is his favourite subject. He is also involved

Last week fellow resident Charles Barclay looked at council records dating back to the time when the former Hobson County Council consulted residents over building the scheme. However further information will incur recognised council costs of $80 an hour. Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware said it provided two staff diverted from normal work for two hours to assist Mr Barclay which was a large commitment for a small council. The $150,000 for desludging was a maintenance cost, not an operational cost, while the flow meter was a Northland Regional Council resource consent requirement. The council will borrow the money so the cost is spread over 10 years worth of rates, rather than one. ¢

p Dargaville rugby league player Michael Prakash has been selected in the Northland Swords under-18 representative team

in the school’s Gateway Programme through local engineering company Farrand & Mason. But the lure of playing the game professionally is strong. Michael says he would like to join former Dargaville High students Sam McKendry and Shane Pumipi in playing in the NRL “That’s my goal at the moment.” ¢

ADVERTORIAL

Partnership in care In an effort to streamline patient care, the health records of almost 12,000 Kaipara residents will soon be collated. Launched this month, the Shared Care Record means that health professionals have access to all the relevant information they need to make informed decisions. The new system has been made possible by a partnership between Dargaville Medical Centre, Te Ha Oranga o Ngati Whatua, Orrs Pharmacy and Northland District Health Board district nursing services. “Currently, if a district nurse takes a swab of a patient’s wound at their home, the delay in informing the doctor might be quite considerable,” said Dargaville Medical Centre practice manager, Judy Harris. “However, the Shared Care Record will allow both the district nurse and doctor to discuss a plan of action for that patient within a shorter period of time and improve the quality of care the patient receives.” The Shared Care Record is viewed using a secure electronic system called Manage My Health. Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas, said patient confidentiality is paramount. “We have developed a collective policy between the agencies who are authorised to share information,” she said. “Your health information may only be used for direct clinical care and not

for statistical or commercial purposes. All access to your information is recorded, including the date and time of access, who accessed it and the nature of the information they accessed.” Patients can choose to opt-out of the new system but this would mean that clinicians involved in their care may not have all the information they need to make the right decision. Te Ha Oranga o Ngati Whatua recognises how beneficial the Shared Care Record will be for patients and also the health workers. “Sometimes we do a home visit and we’re not aware that the patient has already seen the doctor and had some blood tests. Now we can check the Shared Care Record before we head off on our rounds and be confident that we have the most up to date information.” Orrs Pharmacy pharmacist Marcus Liddell adds that the Shared Care Record will allow pharmacies to prepare medications faster. “With a more complete view of your treatment plan, we can alert health professionals to any risk that treatment may cause due to your medical conditions, medications you are taking or allergies you may have.”

The annual event provides an opportunity to see artists at work, ask questions and explore this seaside town. Acrylic and mixed media artist Pauline Gough has participated in the art trail for the last three years. “Creating art is essentially a solo pursuit and therefore the art trail has been a great way to meet with other artists and also the public,” says Pauline who will be taking a brave step by demonstrating her painting techniques at Bennetts Chocolate Factory. People are encouraged to take part in two fundraising events, an art tree and an art puzzle, which will support Mangawhai Art Inc’s new community art centre. An original piece of art has been donated as a prize. Entry to each venue is free and studios and galleries will be marked with ART signs and colourful flags. Maps are available from p www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz, the new Mangawhai Museum, Sail Rock Café and Mangawhai Information Centre. Held over two days, Mangawhai Art Trail coincides with the changeover to daylight saving, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy an evening BBQ and stroll on the beach. Get your friends

NEW SEASON new

style

Top fashion paraded at the Northern Wairoa u by Colin Patterson

The Northern Wairoa Hotel was transformed into a venue for high fashion as the Northern Wairoa Lions and Polwarth’s Design hosted a fashion parade. More than 80 fashionistas came along last week to view the latest fashion for the season as worn on the cat walk by models from both Polwarth’s and the Lions Club. “The fashions were outstanding, including evening wear, shoes and jewellery,” says Northern Wairoa Lions president Jean Johnson. She says 10 sponsors provided spot prizes, while the Northern Wairoa Hotel did a fine job in hosting the event. Mrs Johnson says the audience was delighted with the fashions and

applauded the models for their efforts. Guest speaker was Todd Mullinder who was rescued by the Northland Rescue Helicopter from the Pouto Peninsula in January after he was knocked unconscious when his motorcycle went over a sand dune. The event was a fundraiser for the Rescue Helicopter, raising $1300. Although it was the first time the Lions have hosted a fashion parade, Mrs Johnson says the night was such a success it is certain to be repeated next year. ¢

p Models for the fasahion show were drawn from many walks of life - but all were enthusiastic about helping to showcase the latest in new season’s styles for the people of Dargaville

They bin runnin’ round like bluddy teenagers ata rock concert listenin’ to Dottykon, an also them idiots called wissil blowers. One is hiding in Englind from tha cops that say hes a sex kriminal, an’ the other one is hiding in Rusha from the sherrifs in Merica. An that so-called jurnalist frum Brazzil? Why were they even alloud ta get mixed up in our blimmin genril Lections wen they not even blimmin Kiwis? “An’ why the heck did our so-called media peeple run round after them hangin’ on evry werd.? Tha new Govmint needs take make sum new rooles and kick these trubble makers into tuch before the next time.”

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

Boss and Sharlene both ageed wiv Mum. “An I tell yer wot,” sed Sharlene as she give Sophy a hug. “Them terrerists got kort in Sidney because cops heard them threatin to cut sumone’s hed off. So ifa govmint is lissening out for lowlife terrerists, ona phone, then good on them. They can lissen ter me anytime!” Boss sed later wen we wuz checkin the farm troff levels: “That’d be the day eh Dog? Building better careers Kaiwaka’s hilltop carpentry workspace is abuzz with the sounds of hammers and saws, as keen future builders learn the foundations of carpentry to set them on a prosperous career path. The accent is on rural structures, including barns and maintenance sheds in a joint venture with Northtec.

The project draws on the skills of tutors such as Kaiwaka-based barn builder Tim Magill, along with others like carver Elliott Freer, apiarist Adrian Bonner and hunting and bushcraft tutor Graeme Stevenson. The popular carpentry and painting courses running at the NorthTec Training Center in Kaiwaka are into their fourth semester and are now well established, with good employment p Keen future builders leaning the foundations of capentry

outcomes. Tutors Jarod McKelvie & Tim Magill are always trying to find more! The core of the course is the Certificate in Elementary Construction, a foundation programme which prepares young people for a career in the building industry. From this jumping off point they can choose to progress to a level 4 carpentry qualification, or stream directly into apprenticeship roles in the burgeoning building trade. “Looking out for opportunities is a good skill we like to talk about, so with our popular carpark we’d be silly not to sell some of our completed projects,”

says Tim. “Our ideas (in the form of clever outdoor furniture) and a warm welcome will be on show this Saturday. Come and have a cuppa with us!” But it’s the fun and camaraderie of the course that’s really won hearts and minds. that’s why a planned open day, set for the September 27, is a must see for young people keen to enter the building industry. “Enrolments are starting to come in already for next years semester,” says Tim. “A lot of locals are really surprised and impressed with this NorthTec operation.” ¢

MMP is shining through The election result shows, I believe, that New Zealanders have fully come to grips with how the MMP election system works. The majority of New Zealanders clearly voted strategically with their party vote, supporting the National Party and yet giving their candidate vote to their chosen local electorate representative. I don’t think Dotcom understood the ‘thinking New Zealander’ who saw him on national TV ranting and raving and inciting those who chose to listen to him, using the four letter word to describe the Prime Minister and his bragging that as a former German resident he had managed to lower the credit rating of a German chancellor through electronic means. Many New Zealanders and our forebears remember the Nuremberg rallies and the nazi phenomenon. The Labour Party’s proposed capital gains tax policies certainly did not help them and the Green’s campaign promoting their environment tax on farmers, I believe, was not supported by the wider community, who are already environmentally conscious of the need to protect our clean, green image. Labour has ended up with the majority of Maori seats in spite of the Maori Party having ministerial positions in

the National government over the last six years. The voters clearly rejected the Labour and the Greens election platforms that were to tax more money from the nation’s wealth creators. In future they could do well to remember the words of the former US President John F. Kennedy, when he stated ‘if we can’t help the rich, we certainly will not be able to help the poor’. I don’t think the Mana Party improved their position by their association with Dotcom, as was evident by the demise of Hone Harawira the former MP for the Te Tai Tokerau seat. I don’t think New Zealanders find it acceptable for MPs to use bad language in parliament and in their communication. Many MPs just don’t seem to get the idea that the electronic communication medium is always open to public scrutiny. While Winston Peters has his share of critics, there is no doubt that he grasped how MMP worked well before others. Simply concentrating on the party vote he has increased NZ First representation in parliament and his

statement that it is a privilege to be an MP was a good point to make. Despite critics’ objections to the MMP system, voters in New Zealand are ensured of the opportunity of proportional representation and have more opportunity to have their voice heard than what prevailed in the previous ‘first past the post’ voting system. With the excitement of the election now over, it is important that our democratic society receives good governance value from the National government and more importantly it is important that our parliament has a strong, objective opposition, to not only keep the government honest but to also help ensure good legislation in the public

interest is adopted, by testing and challenging the government of the day. The rural community I believe, will be happy with the election result, but dairy farmers will be waiting anxiously for Fonterra at the end of this month, to announce the final payout for the previous 2013/2014 milking season and whether the current payout predictions for the 2014/2015 season will decrease further. We farmers require and expect the National government to make every effort in maintaining New Zealand’s security and prosperity and grow and gradually improve our economy and society, and to play a leading role in the diversification and strengthening of the country’s economic base. ¢

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Kaipara Grey Power — Vision of the owl Electricity Supply Grey Power’s preferred Electricity Supplier, Pulse Energy, is growing by the day and now has nearly 10,000 customers. To join Pulse Energy you first must be a Grey Power member, phone our local President, June Klenner 09 429 1736. Grey Power and TPPA Grey Power is calling on the Government to be open and inform all New Zealanders what the negotiations entail particularly around the purchasing of drugs. Kaipara District Council Grey Power is pleased that legal action is at last been taken to address the problems caused by the previous

Council. But is it enough? The main adviser will be in court and those responsible to ensure that all systems were in place will also be there. But what about those who made the illegal decisions? Grey Power Advocacy Grey Power’s Advocacy Team in Wellington meet with the Government from time to time, and have reported: (just some of the issues — more next time) 1. The 0800 number is an area of concern and work is being done to improve call waiting times and customer service. 2. The application process for the living alone payment has been simplified;

it is now part of NZ Superannuation and can be done over the phone. 3. The SuperGold card programme has grown and a current campaign to recruit businesses to offer discounts which will provide more value for people is underway. 4. Another SuperGold initiative is the Noel Leeming training programme. Classes (each consisting of 20 SuperGold card holders) on how to use electronic devices are being trialed in four regions. There is no obligation to purchase the devices; the aim is to encourage the use of technology, as well as helping older people to be more technologically savvy. ¢
