Kaipara rural protest spreads u by Paul Campbell and Liz Clark

A major rally of Kaipara’s farmers, agriculturists and rural businesses at Ruawai last Saturday has begun a movement that is spreading to communities across the country, seeking a sit-down dialogue over what is seen as draconian government demands affecting their livelihoods.

The rural industries want to fully debate the Zero Carbon Initiative and the Fresh Water Bill proposed by Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor and Environment Minister David Parker — changes intended to clean up New Zealand’s rivers, streams and lakes. Similar protest meetings were being called for Whangarei, and in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay Waikato and Taranaki as Lifestyler went to press. Ruawai dairy farmer Mark Cameron described Wellington decisions as

sometimes “vacuous” and called Saturday’s rally because he wants “an honest dialogue with the government and the community before the bill becomes legislation.” Some 300 people turned up on tractors and in cattle trucks and farm utes to hear views from Mr Cameron, MPs Ian McKelvie and Matt King, local farmer and former MP, Sir Lockwood Smith and Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith. “We’re good farmers, and we’ve had enough,” Mr Cameron said. “We’re good

at what we do, and we’re proud of being part of a rural community, and I think our story needs to be told. “It’s not a finger in the eye of the government in one way — but it kind of is. They need to talk to us; they need to tell us what’s going to cost. They’ve spread this (proposed legislation) without any honest dialogue, and it’s going to affect all of us and our schools, our local vets, the local fert works.” continued on page 3 …

Playground ‘customers’

u The next big project being discussed and planned by the Baylys Beach Society involved the construction of a playground for local kids. Rather than assuming that there’s a need for specific amenities and equipment, society members took the question to the kids themselves, compiling a survey of all the local school-age youngsters to hear some feedback. Not only is the plan a unanimous success with kids — there’s been valuable knowledge gained, and one lucky participant, Marquis Stott of Dargaville Primary School, has won a prize for sharing his opinion on the proposed play area.

p Dargaville’s municipal building has never looked so bright and stunning as it did during the recent 2019 Wearable Arts show season. With some high-tech projection magic, AwhiWorld’s Dr Maggie Buxton ‘reskinned’ the historic facade of the building with an ever-changing light show. Passersby and patrons to the wearable arts were treated to a reimagining of the familiar streetscape, which has already led to fresh ideas for future civic celebrations.

Multiple times world champion sportsperson, Paralympian, recipient of a 2017 Prime Minister’s Athlete scholarship, and most recently a part of the two-person team (with fellow cyclist Hannah van Kampen) who blitzed the field in the Netherlands, Emma Foy has much to share when it comes to sporting stories and inspiration. Now one of Dargaville’s most successful athletes is returning to the Kaipara for a special engagement, helping celebrate the commitment of others. “We are excited to announce that Emma Foy will be attending this year’s Silver Fern Farms Kaipara Sports Awards,” says Sport p Emma Foy and Hannah van Kampen are a world-beating team, having secured another global title recently in Holland Northland representative Roxanna Kelly. and aim to recognise the achievements “Fresh from her recent success in the and service to sport by people from Netherlands where she has crowned throughout the Kaipara. “We’re not unique; this is happening around New Zealand. We’re all the same family — beef, sheep, dairy, hort guys. Everyone gets shot with this — the consumer gets shot as well.” “So I think we’ve got one honest chance to get the government to sit down with us say what it’s going to cost, how it’s going to affect your local school, your family.” Matt King foreshadowed the spreading protest movement. ”We’re showing solidarity, we’re showing we’re together for one another, and hopefully this will be picked up around the country and other rural towns and sectors.”

He said the proposal discussion document “is 2,000 pages long. They released it and said six weeks of consultation, which I think is not fair, especially at this time of year when everyone is flat out.” It didn’t matter if a few more weeks were added to give farmers time to digest the proposal and make informed submissions “and let parliamentarians and government know how we feel.” One farmer told Lifestyler: ‘It’s our life, our soul and our lifestyle — we’re part of the land and it’s our responsibility to make sure we take care of it for future generations.’ ¢

Making their mark

Wearable arts winner gives back

u by Andy Bryenton

Last week’s Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza had many good ‘knock-on’ effects for the town; from accommodation to hospitality, to fresh publicity for the arts and culture community in the Kaipara — one winning entrant has gone further, giving their monetary prize to a worthy cause.

Students from Ruawai College were welcomed to an exhibition of their printmaking artwork at Dargaville Museum earlier this month; a foretaste of the college’s Arts and Cultural Evening happening this week.

p Ruawai College artists and their teacher, Sean McDonnell join the Dargaville Museum’s Maree Saunders in celebrating the art of printmaking

p Yvette Gilchrist wanted her wearable artwork, Thrive, to promote healthier communities — by donating her winnings to front-line social support services, she’s doing just that

Part of the philosophy of Yvette Gilchrist’s forest-themed wearable artwork, Thrive, was the nurturing of a strong community, using the metaphor of the kauri forest with its complex biological symbiosis and cooperation. Constructed from leaves, bark, tiny glowing lights and a range of natural materials, the finished artwork came complete with life-sized birds

nests and their occupants — judges awarded Yvette, its creator, the Best Construction trophy on the night, along with a cash prize. In the spirit of Thrive, Yvette, who is part of the team at Whanau Focus, offering social assistance to some of the most vulnerable in our community gave the prize money to her co-workers, to use doing good in Dargaville. ¢

The works on display covered a range of techniques and subjects, with winners announced across four categories. It was an opportunity for students to explore this visual medium and learn more about what it’s like to display one’s work for the public, as well as facing the scrutiny of judges who are well regarded in their field. In this case, Northtec lecturer Faith McManus and painter and artist David Sarich assisted in choosing winners from what proved to be a very competitive field. Dargaville Museum’s Maree Saunders donated books as prizes, on the subject of printmaking and its many applications, along with passes for

Candidates face the issues

Mullet are mustered

u by Andy Bryenton

Candidates running for positions of authority in the forthcoming mayoral and local body elections faced a capacity crowd at Dargaville’s Methodist church last Friday, as Grey Power hosted a public meeting to question both incumbents and hopefuls.

Fragrant smoke wafted over the harbour waterfront last Saturday as the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club held its annual Mullet Muster fishing contest.

p A panel of council contenders put forward their positions on hot local topics of interest

The event began with impassioned orator y by mayoral candidate Moemoea Mohoawhenua, followed by a presentation of his term’s achievements and future challenges and opportunities for the Kaipara by sitting mayor Jason Smith. A panel discussion with would-be councillors for the Dargaville ward was next on the agenda, along with a similar meet-and-greet with those contesting the rural western ward. Finally, there was a presentation by an incumbent member of the Northland District Health Board seeking re-election. The crowd listened intently, and members levelled a series of learned questions at the contenders for council, covering a range of issues from animal

control to recycling, coastal erosion to improvements in civic authority accountability. The big issues of the day, which resurfaced more than once, concerned roading and traffic, with a focus on how our infrastructure in this regard (as well as our water reticulation, parking and waste management networks) will address the existing growth in our population and projected further growth to come. The hosts, Grey Power, were of one mind with the candidates on one major issue, however. Voter turnout is the key to democracy made manifest, and all strongly urged locals to do their duty on polling day by making a positive decision. ¢

p Heaviest mullet prize went to Kurt Hindeman (left) presented by Pahi Fishing and Boating Club secretary, Lorrie Stevens

Legal nets only were the order of the day, and with the contest starting at noon on Friday, with a weigh-in at 4pm on Saturday, there was plenty of activity on the water. In all, 58-plus kilos of fish were weighed in, and these were swiftly

dealt with by club members and placed in a mobile smokehouse. “There were any number of smoked mullet suppers enjoyed that evening. A good catch and perfect weather — summer made an early appearance,” said club secretary Lorrie Stevens.

Spring Sports at Tinopai All school roads lead to Tinopai this week, as Kaipara school pupils gather there for the second Tinopai School Spring Sports Day on Thursday, September 26.

p Flashback to last year — Year one and two students aiming for the blue drum

The event will be celebrated with Matakohe School, Ruawai Primary School, Arapohue School, Paparoa Primary School and with year 9 and 10 students from Ruawai College providing a supporting role. “Last year, we had around 240 students from these Kaipara schools turn up to play games of soccer, netball and for our year one and two juniors, lots of tabloids sports — and the day was superb,” said Tinopai principal, Sonia Kaihe. “Through the formation of a Southern Wairoa Principals group schools, we

travel to each other’s schools to share in swimming sports at Matakohe, athletics at Paparoa, triathlon at Ruawai, cross country and sometimes even share a play or two..” The events were also a way for pupils to get to know each other before they attend college. “Of course, this means a cost to our schools and I am also asking on behalf of the other schools if there was some funding out there to help with transport, for example, Arapohue School alone will have to pay $400 for buses for the day — a huge amount for a small school. ¢

Stepping out in purple

7

u by Andy Bryenton

Last Saturday saw people around the country donning purple clothes and heading out into the spring sunshine to shine some light on a topic, which needs more discussion in our society — the quality of life of those living with dementia.

p Dargaville supporters of Alzheimer’s New Zealand’s memory walk are proud in purple

Alzheimer’s New Zealand organised Memory Walks across the nation on September 21, under the slogan ‘memories are precious’. By their accounts, and considering the impact on carers, family members and friends, four out of five Kiwis are affected by dementia or Alzheimer’s disease during their lifetimes, and with an ageing population living longer than ever, this issue is one of real concern to the medical and aged care communities. In Dargaville walkers carrying bright purple balloons and clad in purple

t-shirts struck out through the Riverside Gardens on a sunny Saturday morning, with the twin aims of raising awareness of this issue and also raising funds to keep up the good work Alzheimer’s New Zealand do in assisting those who are impacted by the spectrum of dementia-related conditions. Health sector estimates put the number of Kiwis living with dementia at 70,000 — a number that is likely to triple by 2050. With the help of organisations and caring citizens like these, the aim is to ensure quality of life for all. ¢

Dargaville Wearable Arts 2019 Our patrons of the arts u by Andy Bryenton photos by Sarah Marshall Photography

Dargaville’s 2109 Wearable Arts provided much more than an opportunity for a great night out. The three shows, held more than a week ago, were a showcase of the creative talent of the many designers who took part, as well as the skill and dedication of cast, crew, models and technical staff. None of this would have been possible, at all, were it not for the motivation of a group of local sponsors who came together to ensure that this year’s show was the best ever. These major sponsors carry on a tradition of patronage in the arts, which dates back to the earliest works of the great masters. Since ancient times, it has been the nature of art and entertainment to rise and flourish when the leaders of commerce and industry lend a hand and appreciate creative talent in their

In Dargaville, that meant heartily appreciated the support of Ritchies Transport Ltd, Tailored Legal Solutions Ltd, Dargaville Ford, My Accountants, Grant’s Gas and Plumbing, the Northern Wairoa Hotel, the Dargaville Community Development Board and this publication, the Kaipara Lifestyler. Limitless thanks to all those who came out to attend, support, encourage and foster this landmark event. We are assured that plans are already underway for another unforgettable show in 2020. ¢

options for a suitable brand for her new endeavour. Fiona (better known just as Fi) says she looked at the family who were helping make the cafe a reality, and considered, too, those who had gone before. The obvious choice was to name this new eatery after the heart of the marae; the kitchen, Te Kauta.

Bringing the spirit of the central, familyfocussed kitchen and wharekai to a midtown cafe was only part of the story for Fi and her team, who pitched in to renovate the old Cafe Fare site into a brighter, more open configuration where the kitchen itself is on display. With hearty good food and companionship a core principle of Te Kauta’s philosophy, the cafe is also a place to celebrate those aspects of Maori culture. Visitors are often greeted with a friendly ‘morena’ or ‘kia ora’, and artwork on the walls follows traditional themes and patterns. There’s even a comfortable couch in Katie’s corner, space, which is a memorial to Fi’s friend who was tragically lost in a road accident, and who would no doubt appreciate being remembered with a calm space where people can enjoy some peace, reflection and velvety smooth espresso. Then there’s the food. You’ll find a cabinet bursting with the kinds of sweet treats your grandmother used to bake, thick slabs of quiche and handmade salads. Even the most Euro of dishes, such as eggs benedict, are presented with a subtle extra flair (and free-range eggs,

orange yolks runny, whites fluffy and hot), but there are culinary crossovers not to be missed as well. Try a traditional boilup with watercress and pork in a flaky pastry pie, for example. Burger patties are handmade, and inches thick. The caramel slice should be on the cover of the Edmonds book as a perfect example. Everything except the drinks in the fridge is made on-site, by a team made up of friends and family who work together in perfect harmony. There’s a kids menu too, as befits a whanau-friendly, family space

for all to enjoy. So, a warning, then. Te Kauta delivers a space, which makes you feel welcome, a menu that makes you feel full and a uniquely Kiwi experience that’s refreshing in its approach to both cuisine and hospitality. The warning is that you may find it hard to leave! Top menu picks — the boil-up pie is unique, the stack of bacon maple pancakes is gourmet sized and family priced, and you can’t beat a kumara salad made with the region’s famous local produce.

Spring Break

Spring break starts early Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Robin Hood, the Big Bad Wolf and several princesses visited Dargaville Primary School this week, along with the BFG, Red Riding Hood, a good witch or two and a whole crew of pirates. They blended right in with the crowd, however, as the entire school came out in costume for Book Week.

p From this giant leprechaun through to ninjas, pirates, Minions, fairies and robots, costume design this year was top notch p Storybooks came to life as Dargaville Primary’s students and teachers dressed up in full fictional finery

The celebration of reading and imagination was a taste of things to come, with holidays just around the corner and the weather sharply improving as spring finally sprung. Teachers got into the swing of things, dressing up as their favourite storybook heroes and villains alongside the kids, who also celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19. Two of the swashbuckling sea-raiders who appeared at school to help with the fun turned out to be Trudi and Craig from 100% Electrical, volunteering under the skull and crossbones. Sunday saw more fun, in the form of Dargaville’s Winter Wonderland, hosted by a collective of whanau-friendly local organisations who worked together to bring some joy to the new season. Bouncy castles, face painting, free movies and a massive sausage sizzle greeted patrons at the Dargaville Town Hall. Now, with only a few days to go until daylight savings and the school holidays, thoughts are turning to outdoor pursuits. It’s time to get involved with some adventures in at the beach, at the lakes

Our Northland - Tō Tātou Taitokerau Stories and updates on the great work happening around the region to help our environment, economy and people thrive. Brought to you by Northland Regional Council.

Cadet scheme

provides benefits for all involved Since 2004, 36 cadets have been placed with the regional council, with 15 securing further employment with council. Cory Lydford was one such cadet. Cory joined the hydrology team in 2018 as a cadet and has now moved into a permanent role as a Junior Hydrology Officer - a role he loves. “During the process, I was really focused on getting into the hydrology team and when I was successful I just wanted to learn everything I could and make myself indispensable. I was really lucky to be able to work with a range of people across the wider team. One in particular - Rob Tasker, an experienced Hydrology Monitoring Officer - took me under his wing. Rob’s got such a lot of knowledge and I’m learning so much from him.” Rob says he was only too happy to mentor Cory, “Right from the start I could see the potential in Cory. He was always keen to get stuck in and showed initiative. In a way he reminded me of myself when I started out as an apprentice at the Ministry of Works almost 50 years ago. It’s really

The work that we do in hydrology, monitoring water flows Cory says he spends most of his time and volumes, is pretty important.” at work outdoors. He can generally be found working by rivers and streams, often on private unknown spots scattered around Northland.

Cory says he feels fortunate to have found himself in this position and to be a part of a supportive team, “It’s more than just a job, it’s a career and I just want to continue to work hard and learn. I feel I have a really bright future ahead.”

Northern Wairoa partnership gets behind planting Forty Ruawai College students braved the rain recently to help the Waimā Waitai Waiora partnership plant 1500 riparian plants, which will help protect a local dairy farm wetland. It’s one of eight planting events coordinated this winter by the partnership (that Northland Regional Council is part of), which is working to improve water quality in the Northern Wairoa catchment – another great example of what can be achieved by working together. Water storage and use project Developing new communitybased water storage and use options in Northland is a step closer, with $18.5M PGF funding received for further investigations in the Kaikohe and Dargaville areas. These areas were chosen due to their soils, climate, water storage and supply capabilities, and economic growth potential. Although further investment would be required for final development, the estimated economic benefit could be up to $230M annually and 2,100 new jobs. Read more at: www.nrc.govt.nz/waterstorage

Taniwha rugby team with boot bags and info for young players

Like those that came before them, today’s Northland rugby players draw strength and pride from the kauri emblem every time they pull on the blue jersey. Recently the connection between the players and these mighty trees took a more poignant turn, with the team getting in behind the fight against the deadly kauri dieback disease. The Mitre 10 Cup has provided the perfect opportunity for a partnership between the Northland Rugby Union and Northland Kauri Dieback Programme partners (NRC, DoC and MPI) to come together to ram home the importance of clean footwear to prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease.

The night of the first home game of the Mitre 10 Cup saw heartfelt videos, including striking footage of the Waipoua Ngahere, reduce the boisterous crowd to a hush as the significance of the threat to kauri and the need for urgent action to prevent Northland’s rakau rangatira/chiefly trees from facing extinction, hit home. The following Saturday it was the turn of the younger rugby players to meet the Taniwhas and find out more about protecting kauri from the council’s kauri dieback team. Their message to Northlanders and all visitors to our forests is clear. To keep kauri standing “Clean your boots.”

Passions entwine at Hurupaki School Enthusiastic weed warriors from Hurupaki School have led to the discovery of a large infestation of the highly invasive pest plant, batwing passionflower. Passions entwined when super sleuths from the school’s DIP (Dive into Passions) group found a single batwing passionflower seedling while foraging for weeds in the school’s wetland area. Their discovery helped the Northland Regional Council find mature vines and heaps of seedlings hidden in the outer reaches of the school grounds.

Vivienne Lepper, the regional council’s biosecurity officer for pest plants says batwing passionfruit is an eradication plant, which means it’s still possible to stop its spread in the region. “It’s known to be in Kerikeri and Kamo, but this is a new site,” Vivienne says. “We’ll have to survey for new plants around the school and start inspecting local properties. We’ll need to keep doing this once every four months for some years and we very much hope that our sleuths will keep an eye out for the plants at their school.”

Kensington redevelopment

Kensington concept

ARCO Group Ltd, a Whangārei-based company, has been named the head contractor for the redevelopment at 8 Kensington Avenue. The company has established onsite and is beginning demolition. The final development will consist of about a dozen tenancies with a medical precinct, a gym, retail stores and restaurants. A child-care centre will also be developed by private owners.

“A meaningful funeral supports healthy grieving”

What an ‘amazing experience’ with Morris & Morris. Ann Marie gave us the nicest experience, just a nice person, I kept thanking her, it felt like she was being there just for ‘us’, anytime we phoned she was there talking to us. John and the others were so good when I called in impromptu, asked what I wanted and helped me start the journey, they were very organised. The celebrant Lorraine gave us a ‘happy celebration’ and we really felt connected to her. They were very professional, very caring. They listened to our wishes and helped us put together a package that met all our needs. They were very good, but I’d expect nothing less as they are one of the prominent funeral service companies up North here.

Raking in the records u by Andy Bryenton

On a cold and misty morning in Jutland, Denmark, a crew of technicians, mechanics and drivers waited for the all-clear. At the drop of the flag they were off; not on the racetrack, but into the paddock, piloting a powerful tractor fitted with the new KUHN 15131 rotary rake.

A very exacting official from Germany’s agricultural oversight body, the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft was there to measure the quality of KUHN’s raking attempts with the new quad-unit implement. After an endurance test of eight hours’ non-stop action, piling up laser-straight windrows across the Skeldal family’s extensive Danish farm, the man from the DLG signalled that the job was a good one. KUHN had clinched a world record, raking 467 acres in eight hours; that’s more than 58 acres an hour. The secret of the 15131 rake lies in its very exact and balanced hydraulic rotary drive, allowing for massive coverage and even, predictable results in the field. It’s not the only new innovation brought to mowing and raking silage this year by the brand with the big orange machines. Their research and development teams have pioneered one of the lowest profile cutter bars available for a disc mower, allowing for what they say is an incredibly smooth, clean cut. Equate it to a men’s razor; the closer to the skin the blades can be accurately positioned, the cleaner the shave. It’s

the same when harvesting, and KUHN’s new Optidisc Elite cutter bar series not only hugs the contours of the ground, it’s also fitted with some clever features to prevent damage should an obstacle meet the knives.

KUHN has been improving on cutting and conditioning tech for more than a quarter-century since the launch of their FingerComb system, and this latest world record achievement shows that they’re not slowing down. ¢

The will, the skill and the drill u by Andy Bryenton

With 2.7 billion tonnes of edible crops grown worldwide across 2.1 billion acres, utilising more than nine billion dollars worth of specialist planting equipment, the relationship between modern farming and the seed drill is a serious one.

1.5M please

The quest for accuracy in seed placement and the coaxial placement of vital nutrients and fertilisers have seen some sophisticated machines surface. It’s fair to say that there are none like the CX-6, by Canadian firm Clean Seed. With no less than 17 new patents covering aspects of its design, the CX-6 is a monster of a seed drill, a rolling testlab for future undersowing and precise seed placement technologies. While its immense, 35-tonne bulk is best suited to the wide-open fields of the American north and midwest, the lessons learned and the tech innovations developed for the CX-6 may well pave the way for implements that work better on Kiwi farms as well. It began with the realisation by some farmers that while pneumatic seed drills are faster than the old box drills of yesteryear, having all the seed come from a central hopper can cause bunching and clumping, or seed rolling and bouncing in the trench. The aim of the CX-6 is just that; to precisely aim every single seed and its little package of fertiliser like a bullet into the soil, at a very precise depth. p When irrigation and fertiliser must be carefully metered, seed placement becomes vitally important too, as seen from this satellite photo of intensive agriculture

secondary seed and fertiliser holding tanks atop each row. Farmers can be as creative as they wish with mixtures of seed and nutrient, as they are pre-mixed right before they go down the chute and hit the soil. There are 360 individual precisely controlled electric motors in the CX-6 set-up, all controlled wirelessly from the tractor cab. That’s 360 different possible combinations across the entire machine each second, as a spiked coulter opens the earth and a precision placement

head follows on, dropping in the product. With six tanks to combine from, the CX-6 can blend fertiliser components such as potassium and nitrogen, for example, to suit not just different fields, but different areas in the same field according to prerecorded soil data. In fact, the precision of Clean Seed’s technology is such, that for once, it’s the IT field that’s racing to catch up, with programs able to display the true resolution of the precision seeder’s operation. ¢

HUTCHINSON Bella Roberta To the many family and friends of Bella Roberta Hutchinson, we wish to extend our sincere thanks for your condolences, support and kindness that we received. We also send our collective gratitude and appreciation to the professional staff at the Dargaville hospital for the caring and empathetic manner in which they tendered their services, the District Health Nurses, Te Hā Oranga, Linda Gould from Hospice, and Dr Bev Hopkins. A special thanks goes to Morris & Morris for the professional manner in which you prepared our mum for her final journey and the dignified way in which you administered your service. We thank Pa Tevanga for the beautiful personalised farewell he orchestrated in providing a requiem mass to be savoured. We thank the congregation and the greater catholic community for the contribution you delivered in making that service most memorable.

Thanks to Lance Warmington and his team at Silver Fern Farms for the tremendous support offered in many facets during that time, your generosity was immense and very much appreciated, also to Jayne Coles and the team at Family Link Childcare Centre for all of the support, love and care shown before, during and after Mum’s passing. In conclusion, we take this time to thank everyone else that offered support in various ways, your contributions were huge and very much appreciated, we will never forget your munificence. Mum died on Wednesday 7th August, she was ready and willing to go with the anticipation of once again being able to wrap her arms around her son Harold (Hira) who died prematurely in 1984, she is now reunited with him, her beloved husband Phillip and many others, so we know she will indeed rest in peace.

Please accept this as our personal thank you from Bella’s whanau
