p The Dargaville Intermediate year eight netball team represented their school at the 2018 Anchor Aims Games in Tauranga making it into C grade and playing 13 games during five days of competition. The event is the largest sporting event for 11–13-year-olds in the Southern Hemisphere. Team manager, Francie Pyke, says the girls had a ‘fantastic’ week away. “Overall they placed 91 out of 122 teams which, for a group of girls from a small school, was a great achievement. The girls would like to thank Dargaville Intermediate School, family, friends, the community and most importantly their sponsors for supporting them and enabling them to participate in an international competition and making lifetime memories.”

Kaipara Harbour closed for scallops u by Paul Campbell

The taste of Kaipara Harbour scallops may be a distant memory after a Fisheries New Zealand survey found sedimentation and plummeting scallop numbers as well as disease in the shellfish, which has prompted the closure for scallop collecting until further notice.

Up to the challenge

With summer approaching, it’s looking like a busy season ahead …

P15

Inshore fisheries manager, Steve Halley, says the most recent scientific information shows the distribution of scallops is increasingly limited. “The new closure will apply throughout the Kaipara Harbour and will come into effect on October 23,” he said. The season normally begins

on September 1 and closes on March 31. “The closure is open-ended — but will be reviewed when the results from further research become available,” Mr Halley added. “Increased sedimentation has also made the harbour less suitable for scallop collection. The most recent scientific survey from 2017 indicated

that very few scallop beds have scallops of harvestable size. Results also show very low juvenile scallop abundance, with sampled scallops in the harbour in poor condition, with several diseases detected.” continued on page 3 …

Isabel and Lynne both have husbands with dementia and encourage others affected by the disease to get in touch with Alzheimer’s Northland to receive further support. “It’s surprising how many people are affected by it,” said Isabel. Kaipara Harbour closed for scallops A decade ago, there were scallop beds found throughout the Kaipara, from south of Shelly Beach on South Head up to Tauhoa Channel, Port Albert, Tinopai and the Arapaoa River. A survey carried out by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) last spring found essentially only one bed left, just north of Shelly Beach. NIWA fisheries scientist, Dr James Williams, said then that researchers dredged 189 sites throughout the harbour system. “We caught only one live scallop in the whole of the northern half of the harbour, and there was nothing at all at Tinopai. We did a lot of sampling in all the places you’d expect them to be and there weren’t any.” In the southern half of the harbour, those scallops that were caught on the one main bed north of Shelly Beach were often covered in mud and p Dr James Williams, NIWA scallop researcher silt, there were few juveniles among them, and disease testing due to increased amounts of mud and found extreme damage to the scallops’ silt in the harbour. “The next step is understanding what digestive glands. Dr Williams said the main issue we can actually do to actively restore affecting them was the changing habitat valuable scallop habitat.” ¢

Racing club appeal for compassion It’s business as usual for the Dargaville Racing Club despite some concerns over the recent Messara report, which labelled the club as ‘not required.’ The club is left unsure about the fate of the track following the release of the Review of the New Zealand Racing Industry by John Messara, commissioned by Racing Minister Winston Peters. Dargaville Racing Club president, Tim Antonio, says the club is appealing to Mr Peters to recognise the importance of the club within the community. “Winston Peters will probably have the final say on it, and we are hoping to appeal to his compassionate side. When he was Northland MP, this was the only track in his electorate, and he always attended. We are hoping he doesn’t forget the atmosphere and the good times he’s had here.” The committee has recently completed up to $30,000 worth of renovations and maintenance on the site through many hours of volunteer labour and local sponsorship and has found ways of overcoming its isolation by offering travel subsidies to trainers. “We are a long way off the beaten track — but we do pay a subsidy to

That means that for someone coming from the Waikato it’s the same cost as travelling to Cambridge for the races.” Mr Antonio says the races are an important part of Dargaville’s social calendar and a big part of local culture. “There are some wonderful, community-spirited people out there and the committee has put in a lot of work to keep the races going.” The Messara report described the Dargaville facility as having: “No training. Poor location. Poor infrastructure. Not required. Freehold. Better racecourse at nearby Ruakaka. Dargaville Race Club should race at nearby Ruakaka.” The closure of the Dargaville racing track would end the club’s 140-year history of thoroughbred racing. The next race day is set for November 16, and the committee is encouraging the community to come along and make what could be the last race day a good one.

Trash to Art entries open

Following the success of last year’s competition, entries are open for the Paparoa White Rock Gallery Trash to Art event, and Kaipara artists, sculptors and enthusiasts are invited to enter, to contend for cash prizes and gift vouchers.

Pampering and health will be top priority at a free Women’s Wellness day to be held at the Aranga School Hall on Friday, September 28.

p Gabrielle McDevitt is organising a Women’s Wellness day in Aranga to give wahine a treat and promote self-care p Artists Janice Booth and Kathleen Reynolds at White Rock’s new home

“Last year there was a high level of enthusiasm, high quality of entries, good numbers of visitors, and great feedback — all of which gave us a very pleasant surprise and led us to repeat the event this year,” said organiser, Kathy Reynolds. The three categories are suitable for all ages, and entries may be completed at Skeltons Drapery in Paparoa, or through the gallery Facebook page, and will close on September 30. The competition will be held at the Paparoa War Memorial Hall on

October 20, with a prize-giving at 3.30pm. The gallery is relocating to a spot alongside The Kauri Museum at Matakohe and will be holding an official opening to coincide with the museum’s annual Settler’s Day on Saturday, October 6. “Our membership is very excited about this fresh start, and we look forward to what the future holds for us,” said Kathy. Fur ther information can be sought from facebook.com/ WhiteRockGallery. ¢

The day, organised by Te Ha Oranga, will include breast and cer vical screenings, smoking cessation assistance, Rheumatic Fever information and rongoa — traditional Maori medicine. Organiser Gabrielle McDevitt says she wanted to give something back to the women of Aranga. “Our wahine up there deserve a nice treat. I’ve been a nurse for a long time and have organised days like this in other areas but it is the first time we have held one in this area. It’s generating a lot of interest.” Communication manager, Rose Stirling,

says the day fits in well with Te Ha Oranga’s principles. “One of Te Ha Oranga’s core values is Manaakitanga, which is a sacred obligation to care for people and look after their health and mental wellbeing. “By providing a health and wellness day for women in our outer rural areas, we are fulfilling that value and hopefully ensuring positive outcomes for families in particular women from those areas.” Haircuts, facials, nail painting, mirimiri — traditional Maori massage, eyebrow waxing and food will be available on the day from 10am–3pm. ¢

Paparoa track reopens u by Jill Dickie

In spite of dreary weather conditions, almost 50 locals, including school children, attended the reopening of the Kauri Bushmans Memorial Reserve track on September 18. The Depar tment of Conservation had closed it several weeks ago for construction work to be completed, as a part of their efforts in preventing the spread of kauri dieback disease. The historic track now includes raised boardwalks and a new wash station for hikers to clean their footwear before entering and upon leaving. Lighting change boosts security u by Paul Campbell

Fears over safety and security after the installation of new LED lighting at the Pahi Beach Holiday Park and the adjacent reserve and foreshore have now been allayed after the Kaipara District Council reinstalled the original high-intensity sodium lighting. Across the Kaipara council has rolled out new LED street lighting at a cost of $1.2 million, prompting some public concern over narrow and downward focussed white light beams. The Pahi Reserve Society asked council for ‘improvements to be made as a matter of urgency’ leading to a night-time on-site meeting with council roading inspector, Jim Hale. Early in September, the old brighter HPS lights have now been reinstalled by a contractor at six locations. “At council, we’re getting on with the job and at the same time listening to our community needs as we go forward together,” said Mayor Smith. “Council has responded to clear community feedback on the lights at Pahi.” Council roading manager,

Pay attention!

Henri van Zyl, said the initial approach was to replace both the reserve area lights as well as road lights leading into Pahi. “After discussions with the group, it was decided to revert back only the campground lights.” The cost of replacement was $3,000. “Mr Hale’s time and help was very much appreciated,” said society chair, David Wilson. “This action will make this a much safer area after daylight hours, particularly during public functions such as at the Pahi Hall.” Concerns from residents elsewhere in Kaipara have received council advice that a survey will be held in ‘phase two of the project’ to determine if additional LED lights need to be added or positional changes to bulb direction are needed.

‘Pop-up’ creations to inspire u by Jill Dickie

Silver for lavender

Shoppers in downtown Dargaville are being treated to an aftershow display of many of the 2018 Dargaville Wearable Arts designs with the temporary opening of a pop-up shop, situated at 100 Victoria Street. Residents and visitors who missed the triple show extravaganza have the opportunity to view the stunning creations in close quarters, by calling into the pop-up shop from Thursday, September 27 until Saturday, October 6. “The pop-up shop is a follow-on to the Dargaville Wearable Arts show, and as such, the public can take a closer look at how these extraordinary garments are put together,” said Dargaville Arts Association business manager, Sue Curtis. The detailing of pearls and shells, coils of fabric rolled to mimic ocean waves, sequins and felted fish, and teartabs from aluminium cans interwoven with fabric to create a bodice — there is something on every garment to surprise and amaze. The imagination the designers have shown in creating their showpieces is phenomenal and bordering on the surreal. To see the models on the catwalk — wearing a stunning design made from calf meal bags, or another squeezed into soy milk cartons, and yet another resembling a bubble bath — gave the audience an experience they were guaranteed not to forget and now everyone can share in that.

Less than three years ago, Belinda Gummer and Ray Dixon planted a section of their one hectare Dargaville property in lavender bushes with the aim of making their own pure essential oil — now they are winning awards for the exceptional quality produced.

entries this year left her and Ray feeling a little nervous. “I was second guessing myself but was pretty confident we had a good product. “Once we got the news I was ecstatic and bounced around all day,” she said. Now marketing their product under the name of Bindy’s Lavender, the couple produces their own lavender oils, balms, sprays, scented wheat bags, and plant cuttings. ¢

Susan is a self-taught artist and has lived in the Kaipara District for 30 years. “I love to paint my impressions of what is around me, from the pristine east coast to the wild west coast,” she says. “I started painting six years ago, initially in acrylics, and now I have discovered watercolours. With the encouragement of the Dargaville Arts Association and Mangawhai Artists, I have continued to learn and expand my knowledge.” Kathleen has been painting for nine years, and uses oils in her work. Growing pains

Exploring Art exhibition

There’s no dress rehearsal for life, so local professional performers Alex McKellar and Whitney Channings have discovered, and they are sharing this sentiment through their latest creation Growing Pains — A Cabaret.

Members of the Kaipara Homeschool Group are opening their first exhibition at the Muddy Waters Gallery on Friday September 28, to illustrate the growing skills and talent of the six to 12-year-olds.

p Whitney Channings and Alex McKellar will share their comedic journey through life with Otamatea Repertory theatre’s latest production Growing Pains — A Cabaret

“Growing Pains is a comedic look at the ups and downs of life. The choices we make and the effect they have on your overall journey,” says Alex. After attending drama school at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art in Christchurch, and then going separate ways, Whitney and Alex have come together in Maungaturoto to compare stories and break down what it is to be successful at this thing called ‘adulting’. Whitney grew up in Mangawhai and is a past member of

Otamatea Repertory Theatre, and Alex is the new drama teacher at Otamatea High School. “Travel, motherhood, career, all of these are universal experiences. We take you on this journey through wellloved musical numbers,” says Whitney. Growing Pains is on for two shows only, at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, Saturday October 6, 2.30 and 7.30pm. The children have been developing their art skills, with the assistance of local artist, Steve Guthrie, and most of the artwork in the exhibition has been painted during their classes. Terese Waldrop also spent time introducing the children to abstract art and rock painting. “This is the third year we have had lessons with Steve. He engages really well with the children and encourages them to work on their own pieces,” said organiser, Rona Mitchell. “It has been interesting watching the skill level develop especially in the older children. Their individuality is really revealed as they paint.”

Maungaturoto Storage containers

u by Andy Bryenton

With summer approaching, it’s looking like a busy season ahead for our local volunteer firefighters. Hot and dry conditions, more people on the roads, BBQs and camp-outs — all can add to the potential for emergencies. A team who have come together from all walks of life, industries and backgrounds stand between the public and disaster. Now, they need your help. With a growing population, Dargaville is a major town, but its fire brigade is made up entirely of volunteers. These are people who have made a commitment to give something back to their community, and who are out there saving lives year-round. The big message from our fire chief and his crew is simple — you don’t have to be a superhero to pitch in. The brigade needs normal, down to earth folks like you, and it’s the training, knowledge, spirit and comradeship of the firefighting force, which does the rest. Talking to members of the brigade — both men and women, old and young — there are so many reasons why people have joined up. From reciprocation, after being rescued themselves from danger. Out of a sense of civic pride or duty. To test their own strength and stamina. To learn new skills — and even to prove to themselves that they could reach a higher level of potential. There are those who have joined as youngsters

and gone on to serve for decades, and others who stepped forward in middle age. Moreover, they are from all kinds of backgrounds and trades — an asset when it comes to pooling knowledge to tackle tricky emergency situations. Not one of these ordinary people denies that firefighting is an extraordinary job. They say it is a big commitment, but one, which rewards those who stick with

it in a big way. Watching the brigade on a training night, there’s a sense that this group have come together to be more than analogous to a military unit — it’s more like an extended family. If you would like to be part of something vitally important, and if you live in Dargaville, the local Fire Brigade would love to talk to you about joining up. You don’t need to be an action hero — just strong enough to care. ¢

Get amongst the gardening u by Andy Bryenton

One thing, which has never changed about spring, despite the onrush of modern life and technology, is that now is the time to tackle those gardening chores. Since the very earliest days of civilisation, this has been the time of year to nurture the green and growing things we rely on for food — and for a picturesque and colourful garden. To make it official, October 15–22 — the days leading up to Labour weekend — have been named New Zealand’s National Gardening Week. With daylight savings here this week, it’s a good idea to get the drop on weeds, make use of that extra daylight, and prep for a fine season in the soil.

C&C Contract Electrical Dargaville

To help out with this, one of the nation’s most long-established names in gardening, Yates, are giving away hampers of garden-prep goodies all over the country. We’re no exception, and the pack they are offering to budding gardeners this year is bigger and better than ever. You could soon be bringing in your own harvest of watermelons, beans, sunflower seeds, cabbage and more, as well as cultivating scenic flowers, which attract butterflies and honey bees. There’s enough here to

turn even the most boring backyard into a productive and pretty patch, so get to searching this week’s edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler for FIVE shovels hidden in the throughout the stories and advertisements. When you know which pages they appear on, email your answer to comp@integrity.nz, along with your name and telephone number. Who knows — you could be a winner! Entries must be in before October 5 — so the winners can be ready for National Gardening Week. Of course, all of us who plant a home veggie garden are winners at this time of year. While it’s a time for hard work — made easier by the judicious application of some power equipment for the big jobs — the rising price of fresh fruit and veges makes it well worthwhile for both the household budget and the options available for a healthy dinner. Moreover, that’s before we even get onto supporting the pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which require flowers

Kaipara Physiotherapy

u Example shovel only, not included in the five hidden throughout the paper

to feed themselves. It’s no wonder that one of the big reasons people cite for moving here to the Kaipara to live is to live the old-fashioned ‘good life’ — even those with the least green fingers can bring forth a great harvest from our rich and fertile soil. Give it a try! ¢

Countdown to December is on

Pay attention!

u by Andy Bryenton

It may seem like a long way from the dawn of daylight savings time to the holidays — and for many of us, it represents the busiest time of the year. It’s worth noting that, as you read this publication, a mere 11 weeks separate you from the summer. A whole geological age if you’re school kid, but very little time indeed if you’re planning a big project around the house or garden before the relatives arrive or it’s time to take advantage of the sunny weather. Every year, our local tradespeople are inundated with last-second requests from those who have not planned ahead. Sometimes they can be accommodating, but in a busy season, it’s hard to squeeze in one last bathroom conversion, one last kitchen upgrade or a final house lot of carpet before those sleigh bells start ringing. For the sake of your own sanity and theirs, please take daylight savings as a final warning and get talking to your plumbers, roofers, electricians, builders, gas fitters, flooring professionals and other experts. Right now, a well-ordered list of jobs is just as important as having plenty to do, and if you call early, you’ll be able to fit into the schedule and have your work happily completed by summertime. It is doubly true if what you have planned is contingent on clear, sunny weather — like a reroofing project. A long, wet spring has pushed schedules hard, so book in as early as possible, even for the new year in 2019 if that’s your intended start date. A warning from all our qualified tradespeople — at this

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

‘We the undersigned’ u by Jill Dickie and Liz Clark

In the still young settlement of Paparoa, 125 years ago, a farmer’s wife named Mary Hames along with two of her daughters signed a petition asking the New Zealand parliament to give women the right to vote — in July 1893 bearing the signatures of around 24,000 New Zealand women it was presented to parliament. Once wishful thinking became a reality on September 19 1893, marking a significant milestone in the history of women’s rights — when a new Electoral Act giving all adult women in New Zealand the right to vote was signed into law. To celebrate 125 years of women’s suffrage the Ministry for Heritage and Culture has digitised the 1893 petition and made a searchable version available online. Mary Hames’ signature and those of her daughters’ can be viewed on sheet 386 of the petition along with several other Kaipara-based women’s names from the time period at nzhistory.govt. nz/politics/womens-suffrage/petition. The Kaipara district has several libraries servicing local communities, and each has a range of suffrage books and others, available for both reading

and research. At the Dargaville library, staff prepared a display cabinet with a presentation of topical reading options, including books about inspiring women who have achieved well and defeated adversity in their lives, in particular, Kate Sheppard. Sheppard was the most prominent member of the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement, though many other women also played an important role in bringing about change for the benefit of future generations. She became an active member of various religious and social organisations and promoted women’s suffrage by organising petitions and public meetings, writing letters to the press, and by developing contacts with politicians. Sheppard was the editor of The White Ribbon, the first femaleoperated newspaper in New Zealand,
