Plan to expand CCTV network u by Paul Campbell

Planning for Stage Two of the Dargaville Community CCTV Project with another series of camera installations is now underway with locations identified by New Zealand Police as being high risk and not already covered in Stage One of the project. Appropriate funding is being sought, and the Dargaville Community Development Board is also requesting funds to link CCTV cameras, which have been separately installed on school grounds and at sports fields, into the infrastructure. “The safety of our community members and visitors to Dargaville is of paramount importance and is the key reason that the DCDB has progressed the project forward in association with Dargaville Police,” said board chair, Allan Mortensen. “Now that the project has begun we are seeing major benefits from it, and we need to keep it moving forward. p The Love Kaipara team of Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock, Margaret Baker and Emma McLean came to Paparoa last week to present a Circular Economy workshop. Ideas and information about supporting an economy that recovers resources rather than sending end-of-life products to the landfill were shared with 30 Paparoa Primary School students and 15 ‘waste-busting’ adults. “By shopping wisely, repairing and recycling — consumers have a part to play. Businesses can also design waste out of their production process,” Love Kaipara said.

Tip protest steps up action u by Paul Campbell

Members of the Fight the Tip movement protesting the siting of a major Auckland rubbish tip that could threaten the Kaipara Harbour with toxic pollution have taken their case to local body election candidate meetings.

p Mikaera Miru, Sue Crockett, Michelle Carmichael in front of an ecology display of the proposed landfill site

Resource consent for the landfill on 1,000 hectares of the Dome Valley on a catchment for the Hoteo River, which feeds the Kaipara, is under consideration by Auckland Council, while a petition against the project has gone to parliament. Fight the Tip executive, Michelle Carmichael addressed the crowd and Auckland mayoral, councillor and local board candidates at last Friday night’s candidates meeting in Wellsford. “About 100 people attended, including a good turn out of Fight the Tip supporters but Goff and Tamihere did not attend, confirming to local’s opinions that Wellsford is a forgotten part of the Auckland Super City,” Michelle said.

“General consensus is our area gets shafted and used for our rate take, one member saying they haven’t seen Goff in our area in six years. “The two mayoralty candidates, Craig Lord and Peter Vaughan, declared landfills are outdated and are not the solution. Both confirmed that if elected as mayor they will stop the Dome Valley landfill and propose ‘waste-to-energy’ as the way forward with the contacts available and willing to develop a wasteto-energy plant.” Fight the Tip was supported with a speaking time slot to share an update about the group’s battle and were able to pose the first questions to the candidates. ¢

Council opens up roading funds Money for roading in Kaipara has been accessed by Kaipara District Council from the Provincial Growth Fund grants announced earlier this year. Regional Economic Minister Shane Jones, announced $27 million in funding from the PGF for economic growth for the Kaipara region, with roads to get $14.4m of the total. “The council signed the third funding agreement at its August meeting to unlock further funds for the Roading Package within the Kaipara Kickstart Programme,” said council spokesman, Benjamin Hope. The Kaipara Kickstart programme is set to utilise the whole PGF package to enhance and protect existing natural assets, while providing a platform from which to harness these assets and improve the Kaipara District as a whole. The programme consists of three projects: Roading Package — upgrading key roads and bridges to develop more reliable access for freight vehicles on the local road network; Kai for Kaipara — investigate new crop types, aquaculture opportunities as well as commercial and financial analysis to

provide options to transform land use to higher value and more sustainable investment opportunities; Kaipara Wharves — investigate options for a water-based transport network, the upgrade or replacement of existing wharves to better connect communities and businesses around the Kaipara Harbour. Council chief executive Louise Miller said “the signing of this funding agreement is the last piece of the current Kaipara Kickstart programme. The PGF investment has been a sign of the government’s faith in us to deliver these projects and demonstrates that Kaipara is now recognised as a key area for growth and investment. I believe Kaipara Kickstart will demonstrate that KDC is now a solid council that can deliver significant projects, which have a positive impact on people’s lives, supporting growth, improving infrastructure and empowering our communities.”

Wearable Arts gets better and better

OBITUARY

u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Dargaville’s Wearable Arts Awards is fast becoming a showcase event for the town and the district and deservedly so — it is an extravaganza that is better year on year. I attended last year, in an official capacity, joining with local mayor Jason Smith to present the prizes. Moreover, you know what — I probably would have been there anyway. I remember writing after the event: “What I saw and what I was treated to was a group of incredibly talented people presenting a huge and eclectic range of outfits at a professionally run event with absolutely stunning lighting and sound …” I have no reason to believe that it will be any different this year. In fact,

it will probably be even better. The organising team works so hard to put this together every year and they are rewarded with audience and entrant numbers continuing to spiral upwards. Mention should also be made of the sponsors: Kaipara Lifestyler, Silver Fern Farms, Ritchies, Tailored Legal Solutions Limited, Dargaville Ford, Dargaville Community Development Board, Grants Gas and Plumbing and My Accountants, without whom an event on this scale could not be even contemplated let alone enjoy the success it has. Opening night is Friday, September 13 at 8pm; there is a matinee for all ages on Saturday 14 at 2pm, and the final show and prize-giving is that night from 8pm. The venue is at the Dargaville Town Hall. It is an event that Kaipara owns — and proudly so. I urge everybody in the district to get behind it. ¢ Dargaville Acoustic Music

Rembering Noreen Heather McKenzie From building a farm up from the grass roots through to campaigning tirelessly to preserve vital services for Dargaville locals, Noreen Heather McKenzie spent her adult life building toward a better future. She recently passed away, and is remembered fondly by a large family and the wider community. Matriarch, mother, wife, grandmother and stalwart of community affairs and politics, she was a positive presence in many aspects of life in the West Kaipara. Born in Onehunga in 1929, into the family of Rose and Charlie Pascoe, one of six siblings, Noreen dealt with her mother’s early passing but also forged strong connections to farming, enjoying her time at her brother-in-law’s farm near Whitianga. At the age of 13, she went to work in nursing, then transitioned into the fashion industry, creating dresses and hats. A keen athlete and swift runner, Noreen was picked to represent New Zealand in the 1950 Empire (now Commonwealth) Games but chose the path of family and farming over sporting fame. In 1948, Noreen married Jack, sewing her own bridal dress and those of all her bridesmaids. A carefully invested inheritance from an uncle bought the couple into sharemilking in Tangowahine, but the

move to their own farm in Redhill came in 1952. It was hard land to tame and harder work. However, determination and creativity saw them through, with Noreen taking on sewing work to survive. The McKenzie farm began to flourish, and their children grew as well. The couple founded an athletics club at Te Kopuru for the community, and by the 1970s the farm had reached 600 acres. The betterment of the community had always been a passion for Noreen, and she was part of the Social Credit Political League advocating policies for fairer legislation. She was also a key voice in the effort to save Dargaville’s hospital in the 1990s, becoming a foundation member of the Kaipara Community Health Trust. Noreen is remembered and survived by her husband Jack, children Gavin, Keith, Bruce and Sheena, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. ¢

Playground trees to stay u by Paul Campbell

Huge Norfolk pines towering over the children’s playground at the Pahi Reserve are to stay for at least three years, despite resident’s concerns, supported by the Pahi Reserve Society, which administers the harbourside area and holiday park, that they pose a danger from fallen branches and debris. The concerns prompted the Kaipara District Council to close the playground and employ contractors, and now, the trees have been heavily trimmed of branches, and the playground is to be reopened to the public. “Overall the pines are in average (starting point) to excellent condition,” said council spokesman Benjamin Hope. p The Pahi playground with branches clearly removed from the “The same consultant tree on the left undertook the 2017 report as the 2019 one, and it’s noted that removed before reopening. Recreational fishing catch revealed A Fisheries New Zealand national survey has included the Kaipara Harbour and shown that a vast proportion of the recreational catch, seven million fin fish, is taken off the east coast of Northland and Auckland. The survey contacted more than 30,000 people, and about 7,000 recreational fishers had their fishing outings recorded during a 12-month period. The survey is conducted every five to six years and provides a snapshot of recreational fishing activity around the country. Figures for the Kaipara Harbour are an estimate only but indicate recreational catches for 2017–18 were 101 tonnes of snapper, 45 tonnes of kahawai, eight of kingfish, five of trevally, four of gurnard and three tonnes of mullet. The survey also showed: • About half of all recreational fishing occurs around the northeast coast of the North Island along the coastline from the tip of Northland to East Cape • An estimated almost two million fishing trips were taken in 2017– 2018 • In 2017–2018, recreational fishers caught an estimated seven million individual fin fish and 3.9 million individual shellfish • The average recreational snapper catch has almost tripled in the last 30 years, and the average

recreational kahawai catch has more than quadrupled in the Hauraki Gulf • Southland is the only area in the country where recreational fisher numbers appears to be increasing, by about 14 per cent “We estimate that 14 per cent of the country’s population over the age of 15 years went fishing at least once during 2017–2018,” said fisheries management director, Stuart Andersen. “We also found that recreational fishers catch a large proportion of key recreational fish species such as snapper, kahawai, blue cod and kingfish. There’s been little change in the proportion of these fish caught by recreational and commercial fishers since 2012.” The final results were confirmed by comparing different surveys conducted by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the National Research Bureau (NRB). The survey report, as well as more information about how it was conducted, is at mpi.govt.nz/traveland-recreation/fishing/national-surveyof-recreational-fishers ¢

Two top Northland field hockey prizes are being contested by local teams this month in an unprecedented fashion; Sunday, September 29 will see both a men’s and women’s hockey team representing the North Kaipara in the Powell Cup and Hikurangi Trophy respectively — they are currently training hard.

Moetangi Allen and Karani Hoana Flay have both been working towards the level seven qualification, a diplomalevel accreditation, for several years now, determined to bring more skills and resources to the children in their community. The qualification, named Whakapakari Tino Rangatiratanga o Te Kohanga Reo, covers a wide area of early childhood education knowledge and is of great value to the local centre’s ongoing mission of community and cultural support. “The Kaupapa of Kohanga Reo is to pass on language, p Moetangi Allen and Karani Hoana Flay have achieved early childhood education qualifications to strengthen customs, and culture”’ says the knowledge base of Dargaville’s Kohanga Reo Karani, making a note of the intergenerational nature of learning in Reo o Takiwira whanau are also this environment. engaged in gaining a similar degree. “It’s sharing between generations. everal years of farmers monitoring their milk for BVD has seen great strides made in the awareness and management of this disease. Bulk milk testing is still the most economical way to monitor BVD status on a dairy farm: milk samples are taken by Fonterra, sent to the lab, your vet interprets the results and sends you a report. Now, working with SVS Laboratories we can bring you a range of testing options and introduce a new level of flexibility to the programme. For those who have had recent cases of BVD, have a significant amount of stock movements in and out of their herd or are setting out on a surveillance programme three tests a year is still appropriate. For those who have a history of monitoring without an incursion and have low antibody levels a single antibody ELISA and PCR test prior to mating will be a satisfactory level of testing. There is also an intermediate level depending on your situation. It’s easy to test, just talk to your vet and we can sign you up today.

Awareness wears purple

Keeping families together

u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Kaipara Community Health Trust health shuttle service has a new function to help keep families together in their time of need.

With two out of three Kiwi lives impacted by dementia, and its most common form, Alzheimer’s Disease, raising awareness and banishing social stigma around these issues is of paramount importance to Dargaville’s Maxine Kinvig.

p Large numbers turned out for last year’s purple-themed Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, back on again for 2019

The Alzheimer’s New Zealand community adviser works from within the Whanau Focus Centre in Victoria Street, from a single office where she coordinates support meetings, carer support groups, and, later this month, a local Memory Walk to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia in the community. It’s a busy schedule, with a focus on providing education and support to those who have detected cognitive impairment in themselves as they age, and for families with questions about how to give a better quality of life to loved ones living with dementia. The Memory Walk, held on September 21, is a chance for people to come and bring issues surrounding Alzheimer’s

and dementia out of the shadows. Open and honest dialogue in society about the issues facing our ageing population is one of the key factors in destigmatising and understanding the range of illnesses covered by the umbrella term dementia, according to Alzheimer’s New Zealand experts. Along with the meetings Maxine holds in Dargaville for carers, and the memory group mutual-support meetings for older people who experience issues with memory lapses, the Memory Walk is a great way to raise awareness. Walkers are encouraged to wear purple, the colour of World Alzheimer’s Month, and to register online at alzheimers.org.nz/ memorywalk. ¢

The popular van service, which already takes locals to their Whangarei-based medical appointments, also offers the opportunity for Kaipara folks to visit their loved ones in hospital. Utilising extra available seats in the large shuttle van to keep whanau close when loved ones may be seriously ill makes sense, say the organisers of this service. The shuttle currently offers to pick up p Dargaville’s Health Shuttle service often had extra seats — now these are offered to those visiting Whangarei Hospital to people needing treatment visit family and friends for emotional support directly from their homes, but those who wish to travel to visit helping people access services they hospital-bound relatives and friends may not have otherwise been able to are encouraged to call in advance, reach,” says trust CEO Debbie Evans. “The trust helped establish Town as people needing treatment must by necessity be a priority. Council Briefing Thurs 05 Sept 2019, 9:30am Dargaville Town Hall Audit, Risk and Finance Committee Weds 11 Sept 2019, 2pm Mangawhai Club Council Meeting Thurs 26 Sept 2019, 9:30am Mangawhai Club Funding Committee (Creative Community Scheme) Weds 02 Oct 2019, 2pm Dargaville Town Hall

Aging council buildings are due for a spruce up before the year is out, with 37 & 42 Hokianga Road getting some important remediation work to address issues. The building at 37 Hokianga Road (War Memorial Hall) dates from 1922, with the add-on appearing in the mid-1990s. There are some weathertightness defects in the foyer area, and the roof of the newer section of the building. The work to be undertaken will replace the direct fixed cladding, address some structural defects in the subfloor, replacing the flat roof areas with mono - pitched design, and sort out the guttering issues. The work has a current budget of $600,000 and is part of the programme detailed in the Annual Plan 2019/2020. Work will begin on the War Memorial Hall before the end of the year, and while the exterior and roof will be the main area of construction, there will be a few areas that might be closed off during works. The Anzac Theatre, Citizens Advice Bureau and the regular activities currently occurring in the hall should not be affected. Should there be any change to this, we’ll let the affected people know. It’s a similar situation at 42 Hokianga Road (Council Offices). The road side building was built in the 1960s, and is showing its age internally, with weather tightness issues and mould, and minor instances of asbestos material in various places around the building. However, the cost of remediation and repair for the council offices, will be programmed for future years.

Kaipara District Council will be facilitating a conversation about Private Onsite Wastewater systems at the Paparoa Sports Pavilion, Tuesday 10 September from 6.00-7.30pm. All those with an onsite wastewater system are invited to attend. The purpose of the conversation is to talk about Wastewater systems, about the infrastructure, and regulatory nature of these systems, and the responsibilities of land owners, the Kaipara District Council and the Northland Regional Council. Council’s Wastewater Bylaw Team have identified properties within the Paparoa area that have either domestic or commercial waste water issues. The waste water systems either require repairs or possibly a new system to prevent sewerage that is currently causing a nuisance on land (including neighbours properties) or flowing into our waterways causing pollution. In some instances, there will be a need to address a change in historical standards (e.g. what use to be sufficient, isn’t now), or for repeated breaches of inadequate disposal of your wastewater. For more information, contact: Fiona Poyner – Regulatory Technical Support Officer. Email: fpoyner@kaipara.govt.nz or Phone: 021 581 383.

Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 or visit our website www.kaipara.govt.nz for more information.

Communication Tools A focus for Council is continuing to be open and communicative, and a number of great tools are available to help you have your say, and to stay informed.

People’s Panel The People’s Panel is an online survey tool that helps us gauge the opinions and thoughts of those in the district. It’s usually a small 3 or 4 question survey on a specific topic. At the moment we’re looking at rubbish, waste and recycling across the district, and next we’ll be talking about fireworks. If you’d like to sign up to have your say, please visit www.kaipara.govt.nz/panel

Antenno Antenno is a smart phone app. You can then enter your addresses that are important to you, such as home, work, school, or a holiday home. Council can then use this tool to send text alerts when events (such as road closures or water service issues) occurs and if your address is in the affected area, you’ll be notified. The app is free and available on both iPhone and Android.

Celebrating lifelong learning Adult learning takes many forms, from literacy and numeracy programmes to upskilling in the workplace now Te Roroa Learning Assistance is planning a festival to celebrate those who teach and encourage engagement from those who may want to learn new skills.

p Adult learning is a life long process, from learning skills for work and in the home through to literacy programmes like this one

The Festival of Adult Learning will be held in Dargaville and brings together many adult learning service providers in an informal setting. Representatives from providers of English language courses through to learner driver initiatives, the Whanau Focus Centre and more, will be there at the Hokianga Road community centre (opposite the town hall). They will showcase ways that locals can expand their skill base and gain new qualifications for both employment purposes and personal satisfaction. Some of these skills have been hard

to access in the past or required travel out of town. Now they are more easily accessible. Organisers promise fun and games for the kids, a sausage sizzle and hot soup, giveaways and prizes, alongside the opportunity to talk to educators about ways to learn new things at every stage of life. Whether it’s computer skills for the elderly, budgeting knowhow for families or gaining a full licence to get that dream job, this may be the first step toward your learning goals. The festival begins at midday on September 4 and runs until 4pm. ¢

When country comes to town u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Bruce Stenhouse has a passion for country music, and the old-fashioned fun, which comes with it. Good food, good friends and a live band playing all the classics are his idea of a good time, which is why he’s helping to organise a country cabaret evening this September. “We’re organising this evening to give people an interest in giving country a chance,” he says. “We want to see people get up and dance, so we have put together a fourpiece band and will also feature some singers from our local country music club.” Bruce says that many of the songs will be well known standards, which will bring back memories p The sounds of country music will fill the Dargaville Club this month as organizers promise ‘good old fashioned fun’ for some and get toes tapping for all. A resurgent interest in collaboration, also contains another country music across the nation has cultural component. “You can be sure of a really good seen many people, both old and young, supper, too,” says Bruce, who adds that join local groups dedicated to the music and dance of America’s south the full facilities of the Dargaville Club and west, areas with a pioneering and will be on-call, including a courtesy van farming tradition not dissimilar to that to get guests home safe. Oi!

ADVERTORIAL

In harmony with the land and sea On a headland just south of the small coastal village of Whakapirau, amidst a sprawling maze of waterways, which makes up the easternmost reach of the Kaipara Harbour, a patch of ancestral forest still stands — missed by the axes and bullock teams of early settlers. With trees, including kauri, dating back to pre-colonial times, this area overlooking the convergence of three major arms of the harbour was seeded with forest in the early 1400s, a mere half-century after the arrival of the great ancestral waka of Maori traditional history. Planning to build a home here, therefore, was not an exercise to be taken lightly. A design, which harmoniously blended into the lush green canopy of the forest was needed, and that was precisely the achievement realised by one of the Kaipara’s ‘grand designs’. The designer (who planned this as their own home) chose to fit in with the contours of the land, building up off the ground to create an arboreal view — a platform amid the crowns of the trees. Those trees, which were by necessity removed for the low-environmental-impact build have been incorporated into the home itself, that boasts the mellow glow of beautifully grained timber throughout. This design boasts wide spaces to frame views that inspire thoughts of flight, but the home is energy efficient, heated by a

A BRIEF HISTORY Alistair Hammond is a third generation solicitor at Hammonds Law in Dargaville.

Phone: 021 439 673

Hammonds Law can trace its establishment back to 1901, it has been in existence for over 100 years. William George Hammond, Alistair’s grandfather joined in partnership with Bill Worsley in 1950. Unfortunately, after three years, Bill Worsley passed away and shortly thereafter William Hammond was joined in the partnership by Graham Jackson. The firm went on with some small changes until Howard Hammond, Alistair’s father joined the firm, buying into the practice in 1968. The name of the firm then changed to Hammond Jackson and Hammond which reflected the partners at that time. In 1985 Dave Dennis joined the firm of Hammonds and became a partner in 1986. Dave still owns the firm today. Alistair joined Hammonds Law in 2009 and practices in the areas of property law, including residential conveyancing, business conveyancing, farm conveyancing, relationship property, subdivisions and any other matters pertaining to property law. Alistair also works in the areas of trusts and asset planning. WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU AND CONTINUING OUR STRONG ASSOCIATION WITH THE KAIPARA AND NORTHERN WAIROA DISTRICT.

A history of civic pride u by Andy Bryenton

What’s in a name? William Shakespeare posed the question centuries ago and decided that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. When it comes to business, a respected name can make all the difference. Some have graced our local institutions for many decades, telling a tale of hard work and dedication. It’s no longer very common for multigenerational businesses to be passed down from parent to child in our bigger cities, or for a long-established name to be kept on for the sake of history and heritage. In our smaller communities, those links to the past are valuable, and they are celebrated in the names on older building facades, in the family surnames associated with businesses and the pride that comes from being able to carry on the life’s work of a pioneering grandfather or great

grandfather. Here, in the Kaipara, we also have a strong tradition of business leaders putting in very long records of service. Several have been serving their community for two, three or even four decades in the same trade, offering a wealth of knowledge. One thing is for certain; a name that endures in business is one, which has earned its pedigree. Only those with skill and great service live on to echo through the generations, as so many of our locals have. ¢

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Rugby’s greatest challenge u by Andy Bryenton

September heralds the beginning of the greatest struggle in Kiwi sports; well, at least for the moment. In the future, we will no doubt be enthralled by future America’s Cups and cricket tests, but for now, the eyes of the nation are on the oval ball for the Rugby World Cup. Our valiant All Blacks waste no time in starting their defence, facing South Africa in Yokohama, Japan on September 21. It means that there’s only limited time remaining for rugby fans to get themselves prepared and ready for the big viewing parties that will bring friends and neighbours together at odd hours all over New Zealand. The checklist is simple. You’ll need a suitable 4k high

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

definition television, plumbed into Spark’s fibre network to catch all 48 games in the best of crisp detail and colour. All of the All Blacks games will be broadcast free to air via the internet as well. Some will be delayed, but semis and final matches have been promised live and direct. The essential factor is a fast broadband connection and a modern television with the sound and

mIND YOUr SpeeD ArOUND SCHOOL bUSeS

visual capabilities to immerse you and your mates in the action. Then there’s refreshments for the team. A well-stocked fridge and some snacks are par for the course, but for the discerning host, a full barbecue is not out of the question. Japan, host of the tourney, provides inspiration to give such meals a twist — teriyaki marinated steaks, chicken yakitori skewers, deep-fried okonomiyaki with prawns and more. Remember, too, that it’s hard to be an armchair ref without a good armchair. If your seating needs an upgrade, you can even find

recliners with drink chillers and remote chargers in the armrests! Then again, the other great way to enjoy the cup is to head down to the pub to take it all in with the crowd. Inns and hotels across the nation will be open late (or early) to show all the action thanks to a law passed through parliament just to help us party! That’s the kind of party politics we can all get behind, so consider getting your black and whites on, hitting the sports bar and enjoying the atmosphere as New Zealand chase champion status once again. ¢

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT New horizons for Kaipara Art Awards Four award categories and two new awards have been announced with the calling of entries for the 2019 Kaipara Art Awards. In addition to the four core award categories, there will also be an Emerging Artist Award sponsored by Creative Northland and a People’s Choice Award sponsored by The French Art Shop. “The Kaipara Art Awards encourage, highlight and celebrate creativity in Kaipara,” said Kaipara Art Awards coordinator, Belinda Vernon. “We are calling artists of all disciplines to enter a new work, created in the last year, and not previously exhibited, into one of four categories — Painting, Mixed Media, Print Media and 3D and Sculpture (including jewellery). It is an opportunity for an emerging artist to receive the boost they need to take their talent further.” The awards will be judged by highly respected artist, writer, curator and judge; retired Professor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland, Dr Carole Shepheard, ONZM. Entries close on Friday, September 20, with artworks to be submitted in Mangawhai or Dargaville on Tuesday, October 15. The works will be judged

and awarded on Thursday, October 17 at an awards ceremony in the courtyard at Bennetts of Mangawhai. It will be followed by exhibitions at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, Mangawhai, and Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville. Creative Northland is the naming sponsor of the 3D and Sculpture category together with the Emerging Artist category. The French Art Shop is sponsoring first prizes in the Painting and Print Media categories. Long-term supporters Mangawhai Optometrists and Westmoreland Homes are also sponsoring prizes with the Kaipara Lifestyler providing advertising support. “We are extremely appreciative of the generous sponsorship received from the business and creative community. Their support enables us to recognise and encourage creative talent and skill in Kaipara.”

p The prestigious Kaipara Art Awards return with new categories, new sponsors and new judges for 2019 — last year’s winner was painter Christine Moginie

Get the toys ready before Santa

Oi!

u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is here at last, with summer following hard on its heels, dragging a sack of holidays behind it. For many of us, that means it’s time to whip the tarp off those summer ‘toys’ and tools, ready for the tight schedule — three weeks to daylight savings, seven to Labour Day, a mere 15 to Christmas. Well, that is, if any of those not-socarefully stored jet skis, dirt bikes, weed whackers, ride-on mowers and boats actually start. Shooing away the winter’s harvest of resident creepycrawlies who love to scuttle under a tarp is only stage one when it comes to getting the arsenal of summer ready to go. At least now, when a small child asks you where slaters and roaches (not to mention large, angry-looking glossblack spiders) come from, you can tell them in all honesty that they come from boats stored under wraps for the winter. Batteries suffer the most from idleness, degenerating into heavy chunks of plastic and lead. Tyres gently flatten as our attentions focus away from boat trailers and caravans, and onto pressing winter concerns such as splitting firewood and wondering why it seemed like such a good idea, last December, to buy a convertible. Then there’s rust. Neil Young had its number because it really does seem averse to taking some shut-eye. It gnaws away at all that’s fine and good until its nasty handiwork is revealed by the cold, hard light of the

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

A+ ELECTRICAL Inspections & Security

p Some will enjoy classic cars this summer; others want to go boating — with a little planning, there’s time to achieve it all without resorting to extreme measures like this

WOF inspector’s work lamp. Leaving repairs or a check-up to the last minute is a recipe for disappointment at best, and unprintable swearing might follow. The good news is, there are plenty of locals who can help you get your weed eater whirring and your ride-on mower gently turning what looks like a tiny rainforest into Lord’s cricket pitch. They can even turn what your significant other is calling the ‘whirlpool’ (a hole in the water into which you lose money, ie, your pride and joy, the boat) into a

powerful and resplendent vessel feared by fish everywhere. It’s amazing what a little maintenance can do; this might even work vis-a-vis the old wardrobe if crocs and stubbies feature heavily in your summer collection. On a serious note, take care and be safe with all your summer tools and toys. If it looks broken or it’s not up to code, get it looked at by the professionals. Please don’t forget the right safety gear on and off the water this year either! ¢

Sam has been involved with machinery, repairs and the pursuit of automotive excellence since he left school to take an apprenticeship in farm machinery mechanics. Those skills took him to Australia and back, learning new abilities along the way as he also followed his passion for motorsports and worked on vehicles for the drag strip. Later still, Sam worked from his garage fixing and modifying cars, then 4x4s and off-roaders, a key aspect of the Area 51 business today. Front office administrator David takes care of scheduling and customer appointments as well as the vital parts portfolio, sourcing all the pieces needed for repairs as well as performance upgrades and 4x4 accessories. His 22 years in the parts trade come in handy, and he’s no stranger to motorsport either, having crewed at Western Springs Speedway for 23 years. Talented mechanic Craig brings 20 years of experience to the workshop, tackling mechanical repairs on all makes and models and fitting accessories such as winches, lift kits and bars to off-

If a vehicle needs repairs to pass its WOF from elsewhere, Craig can ensure that all the relevant points are checked and worthy to pass. Meanwhile, automotive electrician Bruce brings a formidable set of skills of his own to the business. He’s likely wellknown to Dargaville locals, as his years of experience have seen him work at many top local companies since finishing his
