Protest vote over water proposals u by Paul Campbell
There was a lone voice of open dissent in the form of “a protest vote” when Kaipara District Council elected members opted into the first part of a reform of the Three Waters system, and they signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government.

p Te Kopuru students Mitchel Irving, Keisha Moffett, Emerson Mckenzie and Harlyn Samuels, thanked Dargaville Lions Club member Ross Murdoch for the club’s $1,500 donation towards equipment for the new food technology block. “Last year the school board of trustees approved the remodelling of an existing classroom into a food tech block,” says principal Lee Anderson. “Work is now complete, with four new kitchenettes and a teacher station. The students will learn about healthy eating, preparing meals and food safety as well as reading recipes, measuring ingredients, learning about time and temperature. These are fun ways to teach literacy, numeracy and life skills. This is brand new for us, and we are really excited about the opportunity as a school. A grand opening once we are back in Covid level one, is planned as a celebration of the new facility.”

p The students at Kaihu Valley School have been studying living off the grid through the Minecraft computer game. “We are looking at everything we can do living off the grid,” says principal Sonia Simeon. “Minecraft is more than a game — it is a teaching tool. They explore different places such as deserts, jungles and the ocean. They have been making gardens, homes and collecting their own animals. In real life, we have turned our old science room into a semi-hothouse and are growing native tree seedlings. The senior children are looking at automated systems such as robots. The students are loving it and don’t want to stay home. The students at Kaihu Valley School are thriving and want to come to school to learn. Striking issue for nurses u by Andy Bryenton
The public support was loud and clear as a cannonade of honking horns greeted striking GP nurses in Dargaville last week.
p Nurses strike for pay parity with their hospital colleagues, outside Dargaville Hospital and Medical Centre last week
The practice nurses joined approximately 3,500 of their colleagues nationwide in a strike as pay negotiations dragged into their 12th month, the issue being pay equality with hospital nursing staff. These front line nurses say that as essential service people fighting Covid, and the first point of contact for many sick citizens, they deserve parity with their hospital counterparts. New Zealand Nurses Organisation organiser Chris Wilson said there was no sign the government would help bridge the $15 million funding gap to enable GPs to pay nurses the increased salary at mediation between the parties on Tuesday. Most GPs are amicable to a pay rise for nurses but lack the funds to bridge that gap. On Wednesday, Minister of Health, Chris Hipkins, said that negotiations between the parties were in the private sector, and were not the government’s business, shutting the door on financial intervention. On Thursday, the strike went ahead. In Dargaville, this took the

A figure, which has remained unchanged despite what the NZNO acknowledges as a changing and more varied role for GP nurses, especially in rural areas, and highlighted by this year’s Covid pandemic response. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton agreed. She was quoted as saying: “These nurses are at the coalface of our communities and the Covid pandemic has served to highlight the essential service they provide.” ¢

Power pole crashes rise
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Daffodil Day this year was a little bit different! Covid-19 made planning the day very challenging, and there was understandable apprehension from some of our volunteers. So, in that context Daffodil Day went ahead in a limited way across Northland. As usual, we were humbled by the huge generosity from all those who volunteered or donated to support our services in Northland and Domain Lodge in Auckland. We wanted to thank our volunteer coordinators Judy Dysart and the Northern Wairoa Lions, Mark Pilkington and the Paparoa Lions, Lynn Coates and the many schools that got involved. Due to the limited street collection, we also ran an online campaign and people can still donate to daffodilday. org.nz. Every year, there are
community events across the north, and many of these are now going ahead in September. So please keep your eyes open for any local events. Cancer doesn’t stop for Covid-19, and we are still there for people with cancer. Last year 415 patients received care from our small team of Cancer Support Nurse Specialists across Northland. Nine hundred and twenty seven Northlanders stayed at Domain Lodge, our accommodation for people having cancer treatment in Auckland and their supporters. The team at Daffodil House and our nurses and support workers within the Maori providers, thank you all wholeheartedly and appreciate your ongoing support. Motorists are being urged to slow down due to the number of vehicles crashing into power poles throughout Kaipara and Northland. Police, Northland Transportation Alliance, Northpower and Top Energy have joined together to raise public awareness on the dangers of power pole crashes. There have been 13 instances of vehicles hitting poles since June this year in Northland, including Kaipara, interrupting the electricity supply to 47,129 customers. As of last Friday week, there have been 383 power pole, street lamp and telecommunication pole accidents in Northland since 2016. One hundred and four of those were in the Kaipara and Whangarei districts. Crash analysis data from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency shows 45 per cent of crashes are in the 15–29-year-old age bracket. “A moment’s distraction can cause a lifetime of change. People living with brain injuries often live with ongoing fatigue issues. They may travel from Whangarei to Auckland and need to stop for several rests. Fatigue is real, take a break,” says Brain Injury Association Northland liaison officer, Vikki Herdman. Northpower Network general manager Josie Boyd says: “When people take out power poles and groundmounted transformers, that creates additional dangers due to the risk of

electrocution, fires and power outages in our community. “I want to urge motorists to reduce their speed in winter conditions. We are seeing too many crashes taking out power poles. During the initial Covid-19 lockdown we had virtually no incidents, but since then we have seen a spike in vehicles crashing into power poles. Our message is that if you are in a vehicle that takes down a power pole and the powerlines end up on the ground, be extremely careful. “If you can safely drive clear, do so. If not, stay in the vehicle, phone 111 and stay where you are until you are told it is safe to get out. Our crews and emergency services attend to these crashes quickly.” ¢

Encouraging young adventure
Prepared to receive candidates

Ross and Carlrine Gillespie, at Gillespie Panel and Paint, have sponsored a $1,800 voyage for a student at Dargaville High School on the R Tucker Thompson working tall ship experience for the past four years.
The grass roots nature of democracy will be made manifest in Dargaville next week, as Grey Power prepares to receive candidates from all parties at a ‘round table’ meeting to test their policies and promises.
“My son Kyran received sponsorship in 2015 to attend a three-week course at Outward Bound in the South Island. This experience was life-changing for him, as he had a shy and quiet personality,” says Ross. “The adventure really bought him out of his shell. He returned home a totally different boy, with self-confidence and a different attitude to life.” This gave Ross and Carlrine the idea to give other youth in the area a similar opportunity, that they wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. “The nature of the sponsorship recipients follow this view, of selecting promising young students that would not get the opportunity to have this potentially life changing-experience. “After an interview process of several applicants, we have chosen Kaya Tobin as our scholarship winner this year. From the interview, Kaya had a really bubbly personality and her reasoning for the sponsorship resonated with me, I am sure she will take every advantage and opportunity from this experience.”
Delayed due to the second Covid scare from last month, when the election date was changed, this keenly anticipated engagement will give the public a chance to question and cross-examine some of the big names vying for political position in Northland. We have already seen a large local presence from New Zealand First’s Shane Jones in his role as regional economic development spokesperson for the current coalition government. Dargaville Pontoon construction starts mid-September Construction work for the new Dargaville pontoon is set to begin mid-September. Work onsite is expected to take two to three weeks, and a traffic management plan will be in place. During the construction period a portion of the carpark will be closed off and used for machinery and materials. The carpark will be fully operational again once the construction work on the pontoon is completed. For further details go to kaipara.govt.nz/kaipara The work is part of Kaipara KickStart, an umbrella programme led by Kaipara District Council and funded by the Provincial Growth Fund, to grow the district’s economy and increase community wellbeing.
Matt and Lana have been busy engaging with Kaipara farmers, growers and community members. Matt’s been out visiting local growers who are experimenting with new crops. He’s looking at things like soil type, wind data, and slope aspects to see what could grow best on their land, as well as helping them source specific seeds and seedlings. Some local farmers have also come to the Hub recently to share their experiences growing red pineapples, bananas, custard apples, ice cream beans (Inga edulis) and white guavas. Many of these crops have been grown in the Kaipara on a small scale for a number of years, and the Hub is supporting those interested to expand to larger scale crops. Lana and the team have launched a new website which you can find at www.kaiparakaihub.nz. Check it out!
Mask Making Selwyn Park closed during lighting upgrade Work starts next week on new lighting in Selwyn Park. Areas of work will be around the public toilet, the laneway, the skate park and new pump track, and the pergoda. You’ll see contractors digging trenches, laying electrical cabling, and installing lights. While they’re working, the park will be closed to ensure everyone’s safety. This will happen at different times over the next couple of weeks. If you’re in the area please observe the safety barriers. Please note all work is dependent on the weather. We’re looking forward to seeing Selwyn Park sparkle under some brand new lights!
Dargaville Library, with the help of volunteers and donations of time or materials, have been sewing cloth masks to give away, with priority for the elderly or vulnerable in our community. Enabling school sport
Museum goes live
u by Ann van Engelen
u by Liz Clark
High schools throughout the region and beyond have joined together to ensure their football teams get to participate in the sport with weekly games being cancelled.
Mangawhai Museum will be the venue for a range of historical characters for its upcoming live night on Saturday, September 12 from 4pm to 6pm.
p Otamatea High School Girls’ XI football team played Bream Bay College last week through interschool sports
“Our Otamatea High School Girls’ XI football team played Bream Bay College last week through an interschool connection,” says team captain Cheylysse Flannagan. “We were really excited to get a great game in. Our team has only been playing together since the start of this year, but the games were cancelled due to Covid. The football exchange with other schools meant we could participate in friendly games. “The weather wasn’t the best, the field was muddy, but that didn’t stop us. We were ecstatic to play. I think it is safe to say that we all had a lot of fun even though the score was 4–2 to Bream Bay. “Our boys’ football team played against Rodney College. Interschool
exchange is a great way to interact with other students as we don’t really get to do that much. Playing football adds a fun factor to it and helps develop social skills as well.” School sports coordinator, Mrs Tina Holst, says the school is hoping to have more friendly matches during the season. “With the Covid sports cancellations, the netball and hockey teams still had matches, but the football students and those who don’t play competition sports missed out. “Organising games with the other schools is the only way some of them can get to play. It was a good feeling to see them out there being physical and actually have a good game.” ¢
p Tania Creek (left) and Wendy Cameron were just two of the ‘lively’ characters from last year’s live night at the Mangawhai Museum photo credit — Peter Cornes
“In 2018, the Mangawhai Museum History Group held an evening of entertainment, where volunteer staff, dressed up in costumes, brought displays to life,” said museum assistant manager, Ana Greig. “It has become an annual event with a sausage sizzle, wine and soft drinks available for purchase. “Last year, a special display was set up in the foyer, where a ‘farmer’s wife’ churned cream into butter. Captured by the process, children loved seeing the action and sampling of the freshly made butter served on crackers, etc. “What will the ‘foyer surprise’ be this year? In 2019, we had a
photographic competition for children, with prizes awarded.” Visitors will be treated to a range of characters straight out of the history books. Ana said to keep a watch out for the soldier. “Watch out for the soldier who has learned a few tricks during his training as a guard. There’s more to this ‘red coat’ than meets the eye! “Come along and enjoy the fun!” she said. Admission for the live night is $10 for adults, $5 for children and students. Entry is free to members of the Friends of the Museum. For further information, call 09 431 4645. ¢

Huge award for a small town club u by Andy Bryenton
The Mamaranui Bowling Club has taken out a huge accolade for 2020, being voted Northland bowling club of the year in a field comprising many much larger and more cosmopolitan establishments.
A Kaipara Christmas u by Ann van Engelen
It is the 16th year the Dargaville Lions Club has been running the annual community Christmas Parade that is set for Saturday, December 5 starting at midday.
p Community members are encouraged to start planning their float and costume ideas for this year’s Dargaville Christmas Parade p Mamaranui Bowling Club may not be the biggest in Northland, but for this year at least it’s been judged ‘first among equals’, taking home the trophy for best club in the north
The friendly local bowling club nestled in the valley north of Dargaville say they make up for size and numbers with community spirit. Club president James Nysen explains that while they are a country based club, without the benefits of being in a major urban centre, they are a passionate bunch who use their facilities not just for sport, but to give back to the community. “This award is recognition of a little club with heart,” he says. “One that’s not only survived but became a community hub. Our clubrooms have been used for everything from birthdays and weddings to political meetings. People around
here realise the importance of having a space available to them which offers a bit of social interaction, as well as the chance to participate in sport.” The Mamaranui Bowling Club was nominated by members of another Northland club, who put in an application on their behalf. That led to a selection process and eventually, the win; based on a platform of can-do spirit and good fellowship. As president, James would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the club’s supporters, members past and present, and all those who take part in the stock scheme, which financially benefits the operation of the club each year. ¢
“We have had a fantastic turnout in the past and hope to have just as good a show this year, if not better,” says parade committee chairman Noel Moran. “The theme is A Kaipara Christmas. It would be great for people to start planning their floats and costumes now. We have three new ladies helping on the committee, and we will have music and Santa making his usual appearance. “Anyone is welcome to join in to add to the atmosphere with the parade starting at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club as always. After the parade, all things going well, there will be the whanau event at Selwyn Park. “It is a good opportunity for businesses and groups to join forces and come up with a combined float if
they are unable to prepare one alone. Children and adults are encouraged to dress up in brightly coloured costumes reflecting the Kaipara theme and children need adult supervision to be in the parade. “Now is the time to start thinking about your float and costume ideas. With Covid we are unsure how things will go, but it is still good to start considering your options.” The prizes for the best floats are $800 for first prize, second prize $500 and third $300. It is $25 for each float entry and $10 if you are not going to be in the judging. Follow the Dargaville Lions Club Facebook page for more information or drop into Moran’s Bookshop for an entry form. ¢
New beginning for butcher u by Ann van Engelen
The time has come for John and Pat Massey at Maungaturoto Butchery to hand over the reins of the business to their on-site butcher Beau and head back to the farm.
p Beau and Michelle, with their son Frank, and staff Kendall and Denise are continuing on from Pat and John at Maungi Meats
Beau Wrathall and his partner Michelle Beardsall have the same staff but have renamed the store, Maungi Meats as they start their new adventure. “Michelle and I are excited to carry on where John and Pat left off,” says Beau. “I have been a butcher for at least 12 years. I grew up in Ruawai, and Michelle is from Dargaville. When I finished school, I applied for a cleaning job and ended up with a butcher’s apprenticeship. I worked for the original owners, Kyle and Ken for three years, and then John and Pat coming up six years. We are a traditional old-fashioned butchery, and the majority of our products are hand
boned from carcases and not just cuts brought in a box. We can custom cut specific pieces for anyone who wants certain cuts. “Things will stay the same, including the recipes. Pat will be at the shop every now and then. “John and Pat were awesome to work for. They were very community-minded, and the locals really loved having them here. “We look forward to a positive future with the business and continuing to serve the community; we wish John and Pat all the best for their life back on the farm.” ¢

New liquor committee Five members have been appointed to the new Kaipara District Licensing Committee to review alcohol licence applications for the next five years. The committee has increased from three to five members to avoid any issues of availability and ensure a quorum of three will be available for any hearing. “The panel brings a broad range of experience and perspectives to the discussion that will result in robust decisions and better outcomes for Kaipara,” said Mayor Jason Smith. Mark Farnsworth has been appointed as chair of the committee,
and another returning member is Gordon Lambeth. New to the committee, Grace Le Gros has a background in public health Treaty negotiations and iwi relationships. New member, Amy Munn, brings experience in the event and hospitality sector, and Murray Clearwater as a former member of six other regional licensing committees “provides an independent, outof-district perspective, if matters become complex,” said Dr Smith.

When the harbour was a highway u by Brian Eastwood
For early settlers, the Kaipara Harbour and Northern Wairoa River made travel as easy as the underground system of a modern-day city as while roads were few and far between, small towns and settlements all had their own local wharf. Most farmers near the riverside also erected their own small jetty. The river was seldom too rough to use and as the old joke said, most of the watery potholes eventually repaired themselves. Grabbing a ride was easy. P and M Shipping line advertised that their SS Kawau would call at Aoroa, Horehore, Mititai, Tatarariki, Tokatoka, Naumai or Raupo. Intending passengers just had to show a light on their wharf. It was a relaxed way to travel. A businessman or local traveller boarding a steamer at Helensville at 10am on a Monday morning from an early Auckland train could call at small townships along the way to be in Dargaville late afternoon. A Tuesday boat sailed for Tangiteroria for a passenger to perhaps catch a ride to take them on to Whangarei. Returning
to Auckland from Dargaville meant a 5am walk down to the town wharf on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday to be back in Helensville to board a city train the next morning. Now in 2020, a Government Provincial Growth Fund grant of $4.95 million has set alight a project to make new use of the Kaipara Harbour’s vast waterway. Almost half a million dollars is being spent on a new pontoon at Dargaville wharf to get the programme underway. It will be almost in the same place as an early one built in 1914, which in turn, was replaced by a pontoon that is believed to have sunk at the end of the wharf. Historian James Belich noted in his book, Making Peoples, that 42 timber exporting wharves were handling 250

ships a year on Kaipara Harbour before trade slowly started to fade in 1900. However, in 1914 there were still seven public wharves and a busy railway pier all fronting Dargaville’s foreshore. Some river towns had boomed in early timber milling days, but gradually, Dargaville had outgrown them all. For local people, the wharf was the

At its largest, the wharf extended from the eastern end of today’s Kapia Street car park to the bottom of Hokianga Road, where the much smaller structure now stands. ¢

p Fonterra’s Maungaturoto site is inviting members of the Maungaturoto community to join their team clearing up rubbish from the roadside
The initiative is part of the Keep NZ Beautiful 2020 Clean Up Walk taking place across the country between September 7–13. The walk will take place from 10.30am to 1.00pm, starting outside the Maungaturoto Farm Source Store, behind the Four Square. It will proceed along the roadside picking up rubbish down to the Bickerstaffe Road wharf area. “Anyone from the community is welcome to attend. Gloves, rubbish bags, hand sanitiser and facemasks will be provided by the Fonterra Maungaturoto site,” said site environmental manager, Stuart Glen.
“As the Fonterra site is a significant business in the local community, it is important to help out where able. “The clean-up walk is a key opportunity for our staff to be visible and make the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility real in the local community. “It is just one of several activities that we support to connect with the Maungaturoto community and promote pride for both the site and the community,” Mr Glen said. Te Kopuru air crash report u by Paul Campbell
The crash of a light aircraft in which two people were killed near Te Kopuru on January 1, 2018, was likely caused by exceeding the plane’s maximum safe airspeed according to a resulting investigation. Northland Rescue Helicopter Trust operations manager Dean Voelkerling, 53, and a passenger died after crashing into a farm paddock. A Civil Aviation Authority report was released last week. The main finding was that Mr Voelkerling likely exceeded the maximum safe speed of the Van’s RV-7 during a steep banking manoeuvre, which led to a situation known as “rudder flutter”, and the detachment of two parts of the aircraft’s tail — the vertical stabiliser and the rudder. Aviation Safety deputy chief executive Dean Winter, said during the resulting descent, the indicated
airspeed was recorded at 451km/h, which exceeded the aircraft ‘never exceed speed’ of 370km/h. “About 30 seconds after entering the high angle of bank manoeuvre, witnesses observed the aircraft break up in flight and then hit the ground about three nautical miles south-west of Te Kopuru.” The CAA said Mr Voelkerling, a Northland Emergency Services Trust Helicopter pilot, held both an aeroplane private pilot licence and a helicopter airline transport pilot licence. He had flown about 380 hours on fixed-wing aircraft and more than 4,300 hours on helicopters.

Springing into spring The buck chops here u by Andy Bryenton
The theme for the season this year is ‘more for your money’ in the world of outdoor power equipment. There have been some big advancements during the winter. Some of the big names in yard and garden care have been working hard to cram more features and technology into their line-up than ever before. Take power washers, for an example. Stihl has had a great run with the production of compact and powerful water blasting equipment, and their build quality and accessory selection set a benchmark. This year three of their top models can be had for less than $500, and this includes machines which equal the output and power of yesteryear’s petrol models despite running on electricity. Electric power is a theme across the board, with 2020 officially declared the year when electric mowers surpassed fuel technology. Batteries are getting lighter and more copious, and that means more options, from line trimmers to hedge clippers to blowers. Speaking of blowers, Stihl has pulled out all the stops in this category as well. From the little battery-operated BR 45 all the way up to the backpackmounted, electric-start petrol BR 800,
a redesign means more throughput and more air movement. That big 800 effectively makes you into a walking tornado, though despite its sheer size the backpack mount makes it seem conspicuously light. Ride-on mowers have joined the arms race for best value as well, with Stiga now offering a fully-featured machine for under $4,000. If automobiles had kept up with the level of extra horsepower, technology and value seen in this sector, we’d all be commuting in Rolls Royces able to hit Mach two. Curiously, this means that those looking at the rust and ruin inside their garden shed this year are faced with a happy conundrum. Repair what you have, and settle for another year of black smoke, blunt blades and old technology, or invest a little bit more and take home something new. Spring specials put battery-powered

Springing into spring Hot times ahead u by Andy Bryenton
Spring is here, and that means only one thing; summer is following on right behind, with a promise of hot days and humid nights. The time to arm up and beat the heat is now because planning ahead is the only way to get the drop on preseason renovations. A cool home with no insect pests is the benchmark for a summertime of relaxing sleep. Mess this up, and you’ll have to choose between the buzz-saw whine of tiny flying hypodermics and having all the windows shut, creating a furnace of misery. Insect screens for doors and windows are a great addition to the home, for security as well as bugfree sleep, but they need to be ordered well in advance. Another option is to install a ventilation system in the roof with a ‘night-time mode’, bringing cool air down when the roof cools after sunset. Alternatively, keep the house sealed up and rely on heat pump air
conditioning; this may use a bit of power, but the temperature will be just right! Water was a huge concern last summer as restricting bit down, and the ‘d’ word started to make headlines. If you swore you’d never let the H2O get so low ever again, now’s the time to make a move on buying extra tanks and plumbing them in. Late spring rain could give you a fill, to avoid paying the water tanker unless it’s necessary. It is also a good time of year to check the filters which protect your home water supply if you’re running from a tank, bore, stream or dam. Fibrous or porous filters and UV bulbs don’t last

SPRING IS HERE! “Time to check and change your filters!”
p It’s time to plan ahead for hot summer days and nights — professionals say ‘act now’ to avoid a pre-holiday backlog
eternally, so check in with your plumbers for a refit. While you’re at it, take a look at the filters you use for your pool too. One surefire way to bet the heat is to get outdoors, adding to the liveable footprint of your home with a covered patio. Recent changes to building consents mean that you can build an awning of up to 30 square metres on a ground
floor without a building consent if the design has been carried out or reviewed by a Chartered Professional Engineer or a Licensed Building Practitioner has carried out or supervised design and construction. It’s the same for ground floor verandahs, and there are also special new rules about making it easier to build an outdoor pizza oven or barbecue. ¢

Springing into spring New season’s best on the small screen u by Andy Bryenton
Just when you thought it was time to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and get some chores done, the latest round of bingewatchable television has arrived on our streaming services. It’s a great counterpoint to busier days in the garden or spring cleaning, and this spring, the emphasis seems to be on horror. The biggest new show around the water cooler is undoubtedly Lovecraft Country, a quirky and different supernatural adventure series showing on Neon. JJ Abrams (Lost, Star Trek, Star Wars) and Jordan Peele (Get out, Us, Key and Peele) take charge of a narrative written by acclaimed author Matt Ruff. Black war veteran Atticus Freeman must unravel his ancestry, leading to encounters with warlocks, mad scientists and ghosts. The Lovecraft of the title is America’s greatest-ever horror writer, an influence on the likes of Stephen King and Clive Barker, but also a closet racist who praised the Nazi party. In this exciting and superbly well-shot series, the evil isn’t just in monsters and secret cults; it’s in 1955’s pre-civil rights era Klansmen and crooked cops. Closer to reality is a series of documentaries on cursed films available through new horror streaming service Shudder. This is for cinephiles as well
as those who love a spooky mystery, as the series delves into five ‘Cursed Films’, talking to directors, actors and crew about the disasters that befell each production. When you’re putting something like The Omen or The Exorcist on screen, and supernatural hijinks ensue on set, tensions run high and tall tales proliferate. Netflix has its own gruesome high concept series for spring, in the form of The Kingdom. A lavishly shot Korean historical epic, which visits the medieval period, but throws in a twist. The Game of Thrones-like politics of this oriental monarchy is disrupted by a zombie plague. The Crown Prince Lee Chang takes it upon himself to stop the monsters and thwart the machinations of the evil Queen Consort and Chief Minister. With all three series riding high in the ratings, other critics have wryly noted that imaginary horrors are a welcome
p Howard Philip Lovecraft is the inspiration for Neon’s latest hit series; the grandmaster of American horror was a genius but also a closeted racist who supported segregation
reprieve from electioneering both here and in the US, and the real fear of coronavirus worldwide. Then again, it
may just be a reaction to all the reality television nonsense available free to air! ¢

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Fresh taste of Thailand u by Andy Bryenton
Don’t call it the end of an era; it’s the kind of change which adds spice to life. That’s the message from outgoing Thai restaurateurs Don and Rose. They are leaving Dargaville after a very successful seven years at the helm of Raan Ahaan Thai Aroi Dee. The establishment (its name means ‘excellent Thai restaurant with delicious food’, roughly translated) was opened with a blessing by Thai monks in saffron robes and has been host to events as disparate as business lunches, Christmas dinners, weddings and birthday parties through the years. However, as the time came to contemplate a well-earned retirement, Don and Rose were keen to find a new team to carry on their tradition of Trip Advisor stars and excellent reviews. No easy task, you’d think, as the kind of north-eastern Thai cuisine Rose specialises in, is not the kind they teach in Kiwi chef academies. Luck was on the couple’s side, and a mutual friend, who runs his own Thai eatery in Gisborne, put them in touch with a family of Thai chefs working in Auckland and eager to establish their own place.
p The Raan Ahaan Thai Aroi Dee teams, old and new, have orchestrated a seamless transition between owners, retaining some of Dargaville’s favourite flavours and adding more

Thongyoo and Tanyaporn have proven to have what it takes to not only replicate the favourites on the Raan Ahaan menu but also plan some fresh surprises of their own. That leaves Don and Rose free to follow their retirement goals, starting with a trip via campervan around New Zealand, before moving to the scenic Wichian Buri region of Thailand, where they own a restaurant that boasts Kiwi favourites on the menu. Hence Thailand
will have a taste of the Kaipara, while the Kaipara retains a favourite venue for Thai cuisine. Don and Rose wish to extend their thanks to all of those who have come to share in their hospitality during seven wonderful years. The new team at Raan Ahaan Thai Aroi Dee welcomes the people of Dargaville to come and enjoy some old favourites alongside new dishes soon to be revealed. ¢
FAREWELL FROM DON AND ROSE!
RAAN AHAAN THAI AROI DEE Is under new management, and we’d like to thank our wonderful customers, friends and suppliers for seven years of success. Please welcome the new chefs Tanyaporn and Thongyoo, who we heartily recommend as world-class Thai cuisine masters!

At the vanguard of design
SPRING SERVICING AND SAFETY
u by Andy Bryenton
In the very olden days, when two horsepower was the maximum option for a vehicle, and even then only if you owned two horses, ‘van’ meant ‘at the front’. It was a military term, and referenced those soldiers, usually knights in armour, who would bravely attack first, making a breach in enemy lines. Of course, today, the term van means a specific kind of light commercial vehicle, but the reason for the usage comes from where you sit; right at the front. In some vans, this leads to an all too familiar sense of wobbling out over the fore axle, and if there’s nothing to load down the back, things can feel a bit dicey. It’s not like the planted, confident and comfy stance of a car at all. Except when it is, the Ford Transit Custom is one example of a big, practical enclosed light commercial that sacrifices none of Ford’s well-researched auto design to add load space. There’s plenty of that in back, with some innovative ideas to help stow long or bulky cargo. However, the action is up front, where poky bench seats, a precarious perch of a seating position and a wobbly ride are nowhere to be found. You might think you were ensconced in the cabin of an extra-large Focus or Fiesta, even before you set off because the design language is all the same. It’s sporty and comfortable in there. From the chunky wheel to the proper gear shifter that controls the Transit’s six-speed auto box, everything seems more sedan-like. It’s not a cheap sedan either; witness the vast tablet-like LCD screen in the dash, the proper entertainment system, the heated seats. The old van you used to take on school trips never had those. It’s a fair bet it didn’t handle like the Transit Custom either. That’s because

p Transit Custom offers traditional utility and space with the comfort and confident handling of a conventional sedan or wagon
it’s where critics all agree the Ford shines. Convincing a ute to behave like a proper car on the road was the piece of magic, which turned the world on to the Ranger, and a similar sorcery has been worked with this van. For all its size (and it’ll certainly swallow up plenty of trade tools, timber or ladders), it’s designed to be a breeze to drive. There’s even a sports version that’s actually sporty. Ford has a double-cab version coming, and even an electric variant. Even the standard model shows just how far the van concept can be pushed, and how far
Ford has come with the idea since the 1950s when the first Transit was born. If you have to move a lot of gear for work, it needn’t be a chore. Give Ford’s latest a test drive soon and measure the difference. ¢
IN TRANSIT SINCE 1953 HERE IN DARGAVILLE NOW The Ford transit van was born in ‘ 53 as the tradies best friend, a hard working van with the advantages of a passenger car. Over the years we’re perfected the formula, delivering the best Ford Transit custom ever RIGHT NOW!

The Honda brand covers so many products that founder Soichiro Honda would hardly be able to encompass one of every model in the humble factory where he first got started in 1937. The maker of piston rings soon evolved his business into the manufacturing of whole engines, then the machines to put them in. Today, a look at Dargaville Honda’s new showroom reveals just how far they’ve come. Local Honda boss Bruce and his team have been hard at work for the past couple of months restructuring the space in their busy dual workshop and sales showroom to accommodate the needs of Dargaville customers. There’s been no let-up in demand out back when it comes to bikes and quads, with the rural sector powering through the Covid crisis as our main financial engine room. That engine room needs working engines, and that’s where the technical team at Honda’s State Highway 14 site excel. There are staff on hand who can maintain and repair everything from marine outboards to ATV quads, as well as most things in between. That fits the philosophy of Honda, who has steadily developed a portfolio of piston-engined pedigree since the very start of their foray into motorcycle building, post-second world war. Soichiro lost everything in the war, but rebuilt bigger and better, becoming the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer in 1958 and holding the title ever since. Walking into Dargaville Honda’s showroom, you’ll see some of the latest machines from
p Honda’s local legacy has been built on the farm, with machines like their reliable red quads, but the company now spans everything from outboards to generators and mowers too
this lineage. From TRX series quads set up for serious farm work to CRF series motocross bikes of the kind, which top international riders use to secure trophies and dare breathtaking stunts. A recent addition to the range is the Pioneer side-by-side, a design that is
growing in popularity on Kiwi farms. That kind of spread of motorbikes is to be expected, perhaps, from a firm that arms competitors in races as disparate as the Isle of Man TT, the Moto GP, the X Games and the Paris to Dakar rally. What’s less conventional is

AUTO the array of smaller-engined equipment, which also takes up a large portion of the new showroom in Dargaville. Then again, with more than 215,000 employees in its factories worldwide, there’s plenty of scope for Honda to produce more than bikes. Their range of lawnmowers, pumps and generators are all to be found here in Dargaville, alongside a selection of other outdoor power equipment by the likes of Echo, Hansa and Victa. It’s possible to kit out an entire shed with gear from this one source, spanning tasks in the back yard through to serious jobs on the farm. Of course, one could not mention Honda without talking about their marine division; itself a source of many awards and accolades for the brand. Honda got into the world of outboard motors in 1965, when they became only the second firm to produce a four-stroke outboard. The genius behind this idea came from adapting winning formulae from their bikes and automobiles to create a reliable and powerful engine for watercraft. To this day, lessons learned in manufacturing engines for on land are put to use under the cowlings of Honda’s big four-stroke outboards, making them a popular choice with boat owners. The full range is available via Dargaville Honda, who have paired up their marine horsepower with a range of essential boat safety accessories, bait, tackle and chandlery for good times out on the water.

p Bruce and Bryan have given Honda’s Dargaville presence a spring spruce up which puts everything in one place, from off road to on the water and beyond
“We’ve really aimed to make this a one-stop shop,” says Bruce, who has become Dargaville’s trusted Honda dealer of many years of service. “There’s everything you would expect from your neighbourhood Honda dealership, but plenty more that people might not necessarily know we have.” It’s certainly convenient to be able to sort out your quad, pump, generator, chainsaw and mower in one place. With spring on the calendar, there will likely be a new round of folks seeking to double down on boat maintenance and outdoor power equipment. Honda has not been resting on their laurels when it comes to design, either. There’s a new TRX520 quad on the way with a more powerful 518cc

engine, power steering and a 600kg towing capacity. Motocross riders will appreciate the sheer power and lightweight versatility of the CRF450R and its CRF450RX enduro and trailriding counterpart. On the water, there are engines such as the BF150, with Honda’s race-car-bed VTEC system as standard, or the almighty BF250, the first outboard in the world with direct air induction. It’s all waiting to be discovered just up the road, as Dargaville Honda prepares for a fresh season with a newlook showroom and some interesting new products across the range.
