ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS

In New Zealand, we have commemorated Anzac Day since 1915. It’s a tradition which began after the first world war returned soldiers sought comradeship in the quiet, peaceful moments before dawn, with symbolic links to the dawn landings at Gallipoli, a day that claimed 2,700 New Zealanders. The early morning light makes a dawn service one of the most emotional and compelling commemorations of this special day. As the 1970s rolled around and the gap since wartime reached thirty years, a whole new generation emerged. Decision-makers, business people and parents who had no direct recollection of ‘the war years’ started to emerge with a viewpoint that challenged the solemnity of the first sixty or so Anzac commemorations. Shop trading law changed to allow retailing in the afternoon, and it became acceptable to hold sports fixtures, some of which had Anzac in their title. At the same time, the monopoly on wartime service, which first and second world war ‘returned’ men had held for so long, became blended with much younger men who had served in the likes of Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. The contribution of servicewomen and those left behind at home became easier to speak of, and the solemnity slowly gave way to what I will term as ‘positive patriotism’. Anzac Day has moved with the times, much in the way that weddings and funerals evolved and changed with the times to suit the different attitudes of the new generations. I genuinely believe these changes ensured that our

commemorations on April 25 survived to be an important event each year all these years on. What heartens me is the broadening of the scope of the remembrance that this special day brings. Anzac Day now promotes a sense of unity probably more effectively. People whose politics, beliefs and aspirations are widely different can nevertheless gather together as one community within one nation remembering the sad loss of so many lives. After more than one hundred years poppies are still worn, all members of the community are welcome to take part and children learn about the futility of war through poetry and music. The events in Christchurch last month make the message of ANZAC all the more poignant. It shouldn’t need such a tragedy to remind us that all people are valued and that the unity of New Zealand remains unshaken. The numbers of New Zealanders attending Anzac services in every corner of the region are increasing so we can be proud of what has become a truly national day of remembrance.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

April 2019

Two Manawatu restaurants, in partnership with two others, have been announced joint winners of this year’s Plate of Origin. The Fat Farmer and partner Culprit, of Auckland, alongside Nero Restaurant paired with Hopgoods, of Nelson, took out the top award. Plate of Origin is a national culinary competition hosted in the Manawatu each year. It brings together some of New Zealand’s finest restaurants, chefs and regional food products. Manawatu restaurants are allocated regions from around the country and must find a partnering chef and restaurant to collaborate and create one dish. Ingredients from each region are showcased within that dish. It was the first time in the history of the competition that two restaurant partnerships were chosen as joint winners. The dishes were judged by UCOL chef lecturer Mark Smith and Cuisine magazine co-owner and editor Kelli Brett. Kelli said the two dishes were amazing and very different. “The four restaurants had very different styles. It wasn’t possible to compare apples with apples, and we could not agree on a winning dish — so we chose two.” Nero owner and head chef Scott Kennedy partnered with Aaron Ballantyne of Hopgoods. The pair created a winning dish of Ora King Salmon as their Marlborough and NelsonTasman regional highlight, together with goats’ curd from Manawatu’s Cartwheel Creamery. “The most rewarding part of the whole competition is having the opportunity to work alongside another chef to see new techniques, products and find suppliers of new products,” said Scott.

The Fat Farmer chef Janet Gray puts the finishing touches to a winning dish

“It’s always good to win, and it’s the final cherry on top because Plate of Origin has so many other positives. “What I love about this competition is the acquaintances you make each year and the competition also breathes fresh air and a festive feel into Manawatu’s dining scene with local ingredients and talented chefs.” The Fat Farmer chef Janet Gray paired with Kyle Street from Culprit to create a winning dish featuring Angus Pure Beef sourced from a selection of Manawatu Angus Studs. The dish also presented Curious Croppers green tomatoes from Clevedon, Auckland.

Janet said working with partner chefs is one of the most rewarding elements of being involved. “This competition provides a rare opportunity to work with some of the country’s most talented chefs.” Plate of Origin is now in its fourth year. by Ann van Engelen Joining the local Rose Society was an interest Dawn and Barry Eagle embarked upon in 1965 as something they could do as a young family.

“T

he Rose Society in New Zealand was founded in 1931 and has clubs across the country for people of all ages to become involved in and learn about rose growing,” says Dawn. “My late husband Barry and I were so pleased we brought our large block of land as growing roses became the best ‘hobby’ we could have found. “It turned into a business, and we have met some of the nicest people from across the world and ventured to

places we would never have gone. We were young, and we had a new house, twin boys and a daughter and he was a busy school teacher. In November 1965 we went to a rose show and saw a notice to join the society and decided we could do it together. “We have both ended up being president and judges — it takes at least five years of sitting exams to become a national judge.” Over time the couple started a nursery and specialised in miniature roses.

“The first World Rose Convention was in 1974, and we had moved into a new house and couldn’t afford to go, but knew international visitors were travelling the country so we would get the children dressed in their best Sunday outfits and take a big bouquet of our miniature roses out to the airport and give them to the travellers.” One couple, were Americans Ralph and Ann Moore. Ralph is known as the ‘father’ of the modern miniature rose. “They bred all the miniatures at that stage and invited us to stay with them. Ralph suggested we open a nursery as no one was specialising in miniature roses here, so we did and never looked back.” Dawn is now the president of her local club. “We encourage members to learn the facets of hybridising and how to get successful plants from cuttings. We used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually in our nursery. I experimented during the years with some cuttings using rooting hormones on one half and nothing on the other half. When using the hormone I achieved 89 to 90 per cent rooted plants, but without only about five per cent rooted. “There have been many suggestions to grow from a cutting, such as putting them in a potato. I think this theory started when immigrants were travelling here on sailing ships from England and thought the potato would add moisture to the stem. Even if the rose sent out the odd root, it wouldn’t be able to grow into the potato flesh as the first roots are very soft and easily broken off.

“I wrote two books, Eliza and the blue rose and Roses down under, and they are available online. I researched how people bought plants from across the world, surviving five months of heat and cold and often no fresh water.” Dawn’s theory is they wrapped the roots in moist moss and possibly an oiled paper and added a wee bit of scarce drinking water. “One of our first miniature roses was creamy white, and when it was first propagated we went into the nursery, and on the radio, Julio Iglesias was singing his song Moonlight Lady, and we decided that was a good name. Julio did a concert many years later, and we took presented him with a bouquet. That rose was the New Zealand Rose Society favourite miniature for about 15 years.” Dawn says there is a lot of excitement when you cultivate a new rose as the seeds are sown in spring and the first flowers show around Christmas. “A lot are single roses, and the New Zealand market is not strong for them, so I throw out hundreds every year. You have to be ruthless — some people plant 250,000 seeds and get four that can be marketed. “We sometimes take the flowers for granted. As judges we learnt about the faults and what an ‘ideal flower’ looked like, so, unfortunately, years ago I would throw away the imperfect ones, this is a regret I have. I have around 150 in my garden to someone not feeling well even one imperfect rose, thrills them to bits. They don’t say take that rubbish away. Now I take them to the hairdresser or the butcher and brighten peoples’ days.

What began as a hobby turned into a miniature rose growing business for Dawn whom used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually “There has been a changing trend, and people are realising that the hybrid teas last longer than other varieties in

On track with dairy apprenticeship by Denise Gunn At the age of 13, Peter Arnold knew he wanted to be a dairy farmer. Now a dairy apprentice, he has set his long-term goal for farm ownership.

R

aised on a small dairy farm in South Taranaki, Peter always enjoyed working with animals. His parents milk 200 Jersey-cross cows once daily, all season. “Mum and Dad run the farm by themselves with the occasional helping hand from my siblings and me,” said Peter. As a high school student, Peter began relief milking for his current employers,

Aaron and Kate Murdoch. The Murdochs were the 2011 Taranaki Sharemilker/ Equity Farmers of the Year. “From then on I knew I wanted to be a dairy farmer,” said Peter. During Peter’s last year of high school, work experience for Dairy Trust Taranaki led to a full-time position on the Kavanagh Farm in Hawera. Dairy Trust Taranaki operates four farms in the region.

Dairy apprentices work and study towards Primary ITO qualifications

When Peter decided to look into Primary ITO courses to further his career, he came across the Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy. “I wanted to do some training to help me progress through the dairy industry to reach my long-term goal of farm ownership. Uni wasn’t what I wanted to do,” he said. “I want to earn while I learn, and I believe I have made a great decision and am well on track to reaching my goals.” The dairy apprenticeship scheme, launched in October 2017, is a joint initiative developed by Federated Farmers and Primary ITO. Apprenticeships are tailored to the individual, depending on work experience and qualifications, and may run for up to three years. Peter began his Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy almost a year ago.

Working alongside a Federated Farmers member and employer, apprentices learn the required skills for the job and gain credentials through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Primary ITO provides support to apprentices through mentoring from a Primary ITO training adviser, reviewing progress and helping to set goals. The scheme offers a pathway from school through the dairy industry. Peter has passed Primary ITO level three animal husbandry and is currently studying level three livestock feeding. Along with owning a farm, the Murdoch’s are also contract milking on a 150ha dairy unit in Alton, near Patea. Peter is currently in his first season as 2IC on this farm. “The milking platform is 135ha, and we are milking 380 Friesian-crossed

Peter’s long-term goal is to own a farm

cows through a 36-aside herringbone shed,” he said. “We have two people in the shed at all times.” The farm receives an average annual rainfall of close to 1,200mls. This year 500 bales of silage and 180 bales of hay were made. Peter said the biggest challenge he has faced is adapting from five days of school to working 12 days in a row. Keeping a work and leisure time balance, with a range of sporting and social events, provides some time away from the farm. Peter attends a martial arts club in Manutahi with most of the members coming from the local community. He plays touch rugby, entering teams with mates too.

“I also hunt goats and possums for pest control on my mate’s sheep and beef farm, and use the meat for dog tucker.” Saving up money, moving up to a manager, contract milker and then buying a small herd are amongst Peter’s short term goals. “My long-term goal is to buy my own farm,” he said. “I love working in the dairy industry because there’s always something new happening whether it is planned or not. “There’s a variety of jobs to do every day.”

Huntley Haystackers win regional AgriKids by Denise Gunn Three pupils from Huntley School in Marton have qualified for the national AgriKids competition. The trio won the recent Taranaki/Manawatu AgriKidsNZ regional final to secure a spot in the upcoming event.

U

nder the team name Huntley Haystackers, Sam Cranstone, Falcon Profitt and Thomas Revell competed alongside 141 other students in teams from around the region. With the aim of the event to encourage students to look at opportunities in primary industries, teams took on a series of fun agricultural modules. These modules tested the students’ practical skills and knowledge. The top seven teams then went head-to-head in a fast-paced race-off hosted by Te Radar.

It was the first time Sam, Falcon and Thomas had competed in AgriKids. Helping out with farm work at the weekends and school holidays was ideal preparation for the contest. Sam, 12, lives on his family’s farm near Fordell. The 2,000ha property is home to Riverton Ezicalve Herefords. Sam’s parents, Mike and Cath, are the fourth generation of the family to farm the property. It was Cath who came up with the team’s name. Sam said his favourite chores on the farm are working with the

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

The Huntley Haystackers team won the recent Taranaki/Manawatu AgriKidsNZ regional final on a sheep and beef farm at Kakatahi, between Whanganui and Raetahi. The farm covers 1,440ha, and an additional 900ha is leased. Falcon boards at Huntley School during the week so likes helping out on the farm over the weekends and school holidays. “I enjoy all the chores — no favourites,” he said. When he’s home, Falcon is also able to spend time with a pet dog, Bell. Falcon said his favourite school subject is woodwork as it is physical work and creative. Eventually, he would like a career in the sheep and beef industry. Thomas is also 11 years of age. He lives on a

sheep and beef farm in Taihape and enjoys all the farm chores and animals. “I have a dog, two cats and the farm dogs,” said Thomas. Woodwork is a favourite subject at school. “You can create things to take home,” he said. At this stage, Thomas thinks a farming career is most likely. All three students were surprised, and a little shocked after the scores were tallied up and their team was announced as the AgriKids regional winner. “We have many families from rural areas at Huntley, and I am very proud of what these three boys have achieved,”

said Huntley School headmaster Sam Edwards. “They all board at Huntley and love the rural setting we have here.” “Perhaps we should get some stock on-site for them,” he added. In preparation for AgriKidsNZ, the trio intends to practice different types of modules and take on more practical farm work. A team from two small schools in eastern Taranaki came second in the competition. South Makirikiri School in Marton came third. All three teams have qualified for the AgriKidsNZ grand final

in Hawke’s Bay in July and will now begin fundraising to get there. The event will see more than 60 students, from across New Zealand, tackle a series of modules and challenges. AgriKidsNZ will take place alongside FMG Young Farmer of the Year and FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year grand finals.

FISHING, HUNTING & DUCK SHOOTING

The best season in years Wellington Fish & Game is encouraging hunters to get set for the 2019 game bird hunting season because many believe it could be the best in years. Opening Day is Saturday, May 4. Experienced hunters and those working in the wildlife field have noted a marked increase in the number of mallards around this year. “This is unsolicited and entirely welcome feedback staff are commonly receiving,” says Wellington Fish & Game manager Phil Teal. One long-time hunter observed that “the last three breeding seasons were very good but this season has been exceptional.” Mr Teal says any observer who passed paddocks flooded by the deluges the region copped during spring and early summer would have noticed scores of ducks happily feeding on the worms and insects brought to the surface. Fish & Game’s counts from each of the last two

years show the highest number of ducks observed in the lower North Island in more than two decades of monitoring. What’s more, the trend, or pattern, reveals a real resurgence in the duck population in the Manawatu region. “During the 2018 counts we recorded a 20 per cent increase in the total number counted in 2017 and a significant increase on the 2016 counts,” says Mr Teal. The mallard counts for 2019 have just been completed, and numbers are again high, continuing the upward trend. The Wellington Fish & Game Council has opted for a more liberal bag limit but has kept the season length the same. Manawatu hunters are permitted to take 10 grey/mallards each a day, and the season runs for eight weeks. Following the Christchurch terror attacks, changes to firearms laws have been moved through parliament but are unlikely to affect hunters. Sporting semi-automatic and pump-

action shotguns remain legal for game bird hunting; however, there are some conditions, which all game bird licence holders will need to be aware of to ensure that they are complying with the new laws. Those conditions are: • It is illegal for the magazines of sporting semi-automatic and pumpaction shotguns to hold more than five rounds • All magazine extensions are illegal • Pump-action shotguns capable of being used with a detachable magazine are illegal It shouldn’t affect the majority of Manawatu hunters as the region already has a ban on magazine extensions. Pre-Season Checklist: Must Haves • Game Bird Hunting Licence • Ammo • Any gear you meant to update, refresh or replace from last season Permission • Confirm access with landowner well before opening day, not the night before • Make sure you have any permits you require to hunt on DOC or Fish & Game-administered land • Get time off — you do not want to find out you are rostered on during Opening weekend

Crops in autumn At this time of the year, feed crops and pastures can be toxic to livestock particularly when frosts, overcast or cold weather follow a period of rapid growth. “Nitrate poisoning can occur when the plant uptakes more nitrogen from the soil than is able to be utilised,” says James White, commercial extension manager for Seed Force. “It can affect many species but most notably forage brassicas, short-term ryegrasses and oats. Grazing strategies such as not running hungry stock onto at-risk crops or pastures and reducing their intake by providing a supplement such as hay or silage, or a feed with low nitrate levels, will help minimise the risk. “Allow time for livestock to adjust to feed crops by gradually increasing the allocation over time. During high-risk periods, feed the pasture or crop in the afternoon as nitrate levels will typically be lower, particularly on sunny days. “All stock can be affected by nitrate poisoning, but cattle and younger stock are most susceptible. Nitrate test kits are available so farmers can test their own crops, or samples sent away from analysis. Levels exceeding two per cent of dry matter are considered unsafe. “Nitrate poisoning can happen very quickly, so check stock often

during high-risk periods and animals showing any sign of illness should be removed immediately.” Acidosis is another risk factor when feeding forage brassicas, but this can be minimised by introducing stock to the crop slowly, ensuring animals are not going onto the crop hungry and providing access to supplementary feed. Brassicas also contain anti-nutritional compounds (SMCO and Glucosinolates), but these can be managed through a slow transition and adequate supplementation. Bloat can also be an issue if feeding frosted brassica crops. “Careful transitioning is essential when feeding fodder beet crops, particularly to cattle. The feed should be introduced to the animal slowly, and the feed allocation gradually increased; this allows the animal’s rumen to adjust to a new type of feed. “It is important to know exactly how much feed you are giving animals over this transition period. Crops should be measured, and plants sent away for dry matter testing.” James cautions against using ‘book value’ dry matter measurements as

these can vary greatly with fodder beet and have a big impact on allocation due to fodder beet’s high yield potential. “During the transition period, which should last for at least 14 days, give the animals plenty of room with wide feedingfaces. Never run hungry animals onto the crop over this adjustment period. Ensure the animals’ nutritional needs are being met by providing the correct supplement with their crop diet. It will vary between different classes of stock. “Young cattle should be vaccinated with a 10-in-one vaccine before they are introduced to fodder beet.” Sheep are at less risk of acidosis on fodder beet so don’t need the careful transitioning used for other stock. While they can self-regulate their intake easier than cattle in the early stages of feeding, they should still be introduced to the crop gradually.

A century in business W Amey & Co Limited this year marked 100 years as a familyowned and operated business operating in Rongotea. Generations of farming families have walked through the doors of the store since William Amey senior founded the company. He had returned to New Zealand after serving in Gallipoli and France during the first world war when he heard of a one-truck carrying business up for sale. He purchased the business, which along with a solidtyred Denby truck, included a section,

house and shed. The truck was used to cart goods between Palmerston North and Rongotea, and to farms in the surrounding area. During the late 1920s, he included a service car and transported up to eight passengers to Palmerston North daily. Eventually land on the corner of Thames and Medway Streets became available after a fire and William

constructed a new building for his company. In 1929 seed, grain, coal, salt and hardware were added to the business inventory. As the firm grew, William’s two sons, Leonard and Bill, joined him and they took on large contracts for the cartage of lime and fertiliser. In 1955 W Amey & Co became a limited company and had grown to include six trucks and employed eight staff members. Later his three daughters worked in the office for a time. Supporting the community was important to William, and this dedication has continued through the generations. He retired in 1960 and Leonard became the managing director, and later Bill stepped into this position. During the last 10 years, three of William’s grandchildren Perry, Paul and Ross have taken over the directorship. The family

have adapted the goods and services offered to the changing needs of the rural community. Ross manages the metal cartage, grain, silage and farm track work aspects of the company. Perry runs the fertiliser cartage and spreading, whilst Paul takes care of water cartage and the store and is considered to be ‘the glue to hold it all together’. “One of our recent highlights has been the purchase of a bull beef farm near Sanson,” says Paul. “The farm has been named Shepreth, in recognition of William Amey senior’s birthplace near Cambridge, England. As a family, we aim to leave a sound business for the fourth generation. During the past 100 years, we have taken care of our customers and this support has extended to supplying credit to farmers in tough times. It is all about community and supporting people to succeed.”

WINTER FOCUS Maintaining your property With winter breathing down our necks it is time to remember that all those jobs that have been put off until tomorrow need to be attended to. Whether it is purchasing new thermal curtains or carpets, fixing windows and doors against drafts, upgrading the fireplace or getting your long-awaited spa pool — don’t forget the outside also needs care. Before the wet weather, consider washing the outside of your house, sheds, footpaths and driveways as sometimes required maintenance

can be concealed by the slightest amount of moss, debris and clumps of deteriorating leaves. It takes just a small hole from a displaced nail in your roof, or sealer missing from joinery to create a magnitude of water issues including wet ceilings, rotten joists and dampness in your house. One broken tile or small nail hole is often the cause of a massive amount of water getting

into your building without you realising. An old roof can have gaps, which allow the wind to blow rain through. Missing nails also create an environment for roofing iron to be ripped from the building. That in itself is a dangerous position to be in. One gust of wind can remove an entire roof, and the iron can end up across the farm including on the road. It also has the ability to slice off a head or drastically injure an animal. Good downpipes and gutters catch valuable rainwater as well as ensure that your building is not quietly being destroyed by water retention. It is often not seen until the damage is done as it can spill back under the eaves into the internal walls. Now is the time to ensure they are up to scratch and clear of breaks and debris such as leaves and possibly dead rodents. That needs to be done not only on houses but buildings of all types, including cow sheds, pig sties, machinery and shearing sheds. Check your water tanks and rain harvesting systems are not quietly leaking and consider upgrading them or purchasing another if your water requirements have grown. With wet weather on its way, it is a good time

to take advantage of keeping your water supply topped up naturally and preparing for the future dry spells, so you have a good supply for your home, garden and animals. Winter is a time when we want as little as possible to go wrong, so preparing in advance, and calling the experts beforehand is a wise move. Having a plan and ensuring all that can be fixed or upgraded is done early will help eliminate unnecessary stress. Contractors are often busy and booked well in advance. Having your valuable buildings maintained pre-winter both protects your assets and will save on unexpected emergency call-outs, which often happen in the middle of a dark winter’s night.

WINTER FOCUS

Protecting your land

If you live on a farm or a lifestyle block, having your drainage maintained will ensure excess or wastewater is removed to the correct area during the wet winter months. Healthy drains help reduce the number of contaminants lost in waterways while also optimising soil moisture and improving pasture production, stock health and the habitat for fish and helpful insects. Hiring a contractor is a good option to fence and clear your waterways, leaving you to take care of other chores on your property. Drains include natural or artificial channels to lower the water table and reduce surface flood risk. Fencing waterways is now an important part of rural life and reduce stock damage from treading the banks. Less damage means less build-up of sediment, which minimises the need to clear drains so frequently in the future. Adding a grass strip and native grasses next to the waterway help filter nutrients and sediment in the run-off on drain banks. It also improves water quality and saves money by reducing the need to clear drains. Planting shrubs on the northern bank provide shade to the drain in summer and improve fish and insect habitat whilst minimising weed growth in the drain. If you don’t have the time, equipment or knowledge, consider engaging a

contractor who can ensure waterways on your property, no matter how big or small, are kept at a maximum of health and are free from debris for the upcoming water volume increase during the coming months. Prior to the cold weather, check fences are in sound order, especially along the boundary as if stock get out onto the road it is the owner’s responsibility for any damage or accidents caused. Keeping all stock safe is good management. It takes just one broken fencing wire or one broken post to allow a mob of sheep out onto the road, into a neighbour’s crop or to escape into a forest area. A fencing contractor can carry out repairs or make suggestions and come up with solutions if you need a new system to keep your animals inside your property. What is needed to keep cows and sheep secure may be different to keeping in a herd of bulls. The same goes for horses, deer and alpaca. If you are unsure of your needs, call a local expert who will be able to help design and construct a fence for your specific requirements.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT & MACHINERY

Lessons from leviathans by Andy Bryenton

When manufacturers like Ford Motor Company produce race winning machines like their Le Mans edition GT, we know that the lessons learned from pushing the envelope of speed and power are going to filter through into our more prosaic road cars. Innovations such as disc brakes, turbochargers and aerodynamics all come from the racetrack to the road and driveway. What about the world of tractors? These are not machines built for speed, but power. While the tractor pull contests beloved of field days and agricultural fairs are spectacular, they bear only a small resemblance to what farmers really want from their rolling stock. In the world of agriculture, the test-bed for engine efficiency, handling innovation and control comes from the giants of the open field, those machines, which regularly link up to implements able to harrow, seed or cultivate vast swathes at a single pass. Machines like the 60-year lineage of Case IH’s Steiger series. A look at the numbers for the 600 series tells a tale of superlatives. From the sheer size (the exhaust stack is taller than a man, and the top point of the machine’s distinctive tracks sits at

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

shoulder height or above) to the power of a 12.9 litre twin-turbocharged inline six, this is a tractor that towers over its smaller stablemates. It’s not brute strength alone, which makes the Steiger 600 impressive. Take that engine, for example. It’s tier two compliant without the use of any AdBlue or other active exhaust cleaning tech needed. A separate cooling system for each turbocharger delivers 30 per cent more power under load. These are innovations driven by the need to deliver what a recent test in Nebraska, USA, ruled the ‘most powerful tractor in the industry’. They also offer insights into making other Case IH tractors more efficient. Look at another aspect, those distinctive tracks with their five-axle design. They’re not just to make the

MiND YOUr SpEED ArOUND SCHOOl BUSES

Steiger look like an unstoppable tank; in fact, they are more gentle on the soil and substrate, with multiple points of ground contact reducing compaction. Then there’s an industry-first high-horsepower CVT transmission, able to creep at one metre a minute or transit at 40km/h. Add in automatic fuel-saving technology, a fully suspended cab for operator comfort, and a host more features, and

you can see why this flagship tractor points the way to innovations across the range like Mercedes-Benz’s S Class or VW’s Bugatti Chiron. Engineers excel when they are given a big task to complete, and the ideas they formulate benefit the entire brand. Lessons from 60 years of Steiger tractors make the whole Case IH lineup better; a case of the biggest bringing out the best.

This boy ticks a lot of boxes, he is strong, very well put together, has a great walk and I can see that he is just the type of Colt that will be broken in early, trial at the early season trials in August, then commence his racing career on a path toward the Karaka Million next January.”

Focussed on climate change

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

New survey research shows farmers are focussed on sustainability and the impacts of climate change more than ever. The survey, by Nielsen Research, was commissioned by the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Research programme. “These latest results show that 92 per cent of farmers are focussed on making their farm more environmentally sustainable, up from 78 per cent in the last survey of 2009. That’s really heartening,” says agriculture minister Damien O’Connor. “Some of the specific actions farmers mentioned were riparian/shelter planting, waterway control, improved fertiliser management and more efficient irrigation systems. That gives us a really valuable understanding of what is front of mind for farmers. “Slightly disheartening is that only 23 per cent of farmers anticipate an increased focus on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years, so that’s something for us all to work on.’’ Minister O’Connor says farmers face a changing climate. “They need to prepare to cope with the intensifying weather effects of climate change and at the same time reduce their environmental footprint. That takes investment in infrastructure and means you need to be financially viable. “The coalition government is scoping the development of resources

and information for farmers to fill the knowledge gap in ways to reduce emissions, working with the sector to develop practical on-farm knowledge.” Minister for Climate Change James Shaw says that the results of the survey are consistent with expectations. “The survey shows that farmers have a better understanding of what they are able to do on-farm to be more environmentally sustainable, with the exception of greenhouse gas emissions reduction — an area where we know farmers feel they need more information and advice. “The Biological Emissions Reference Group report told us that there are lots of solutions emerging, but that the situation varies from farm-to-farm and so solutions need to be tailored. That is why we are now investing in developing that advice and integrated farm planning tools. We need to support farmers and growers to transition to sustainable land-use through planning and informed decision-making. “Last year the government consulted on the Zero Carbon Bill, which showed the need to give certainty and direction on the pathway to a low-emissions economy. We will also soon receive the recommendations of the Interim Climate Change Committee on addressing agricultural emissions. That will help us

Help for farm waste disposal The Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund has allocated $381,000, to help farmers and growers more easily recycle or safely dispose of a wider range of on-farm waste such as agrichemicals, scrap metal, soft plastics and used oil. Rural recycling programme Agrecovery will manage the project by offering onestop-shop events where farmers and growers can drop off waste. The events will accept a wide variety of waste over and above what Agrecovery’s existing agrichemical scheme accepts. “This funding will enable the programme to offer a new one-stopshop approach to allow farmers to drop off agrichemicals and their containers as well as other farm waste, including bulk fertiliser bags, used oil, scrap metal, silage/baleage wrap and other soft plastics at the same time,” says associate environment minister, Eugenie Sage. “Waste on-farm has traditionally been burned, buried or stock-piled, which can have significant health risks and

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

can cause air and water pollution. This project would see rural waste either recycled or disposed of, in an efficient, safe and managed way. “This Agrecovery project will also help develop options for New Zealand’s first mandatory product stewardship for agrichemicals and their containers.” The one-stop-shop approach builds on an existing scheme. “Currently farmers are able to drop off agrichemical containers at close to 100 collection sites around the country under a voluntary product stewardship scheme run by Agrecovery.” Agrecovery also collects large quantities of containers and drums from farms and disposes of unwanted agrichemicals. The manufacturers who participate in the programme fund it by

paying a levy on the products they sell into the marketplace. “We all need to take responsibility for reducing the impacts of the products we manufacture, sell and use on nature and the wider environment. Product stewardship helps us shift away from the ‘take, make and dispose’ economic model to a more efficient and less wasteful circular economic model where materials are reused or recycled at the end of a product’s useful life. “Burning, burial and bulk storage of waste on farms have been the main methods for managing rural waste traditionally, creating problems that this new project with Agrecovery will help to solve.” The Ministry for the Environment is also coordinating work on mandatory product stewardship schemes for tyres, refrigerants and lithium ion batteries.

The Formula One racing season is off to a great start, delivering the usual rivalries, intense pursuits and lightning-fast pit stops for viewers worldwide. Moreover, it’s also serving up plenty of technical data and science to help refine the cars of tomorrow. It’s not just on the high-speed blacktop of the world’s road circuits that this kind of innovation comes to life, however. Polaris, well known for their off-road machines, have taken a look at F1 as well. The first thing they noticed is that you need to lose a seat. Well, we’re not really sure if the inspiration for the new, 110 horsepower, 999cc twin cylinder beast they call the RS1 came from watching big-winged road rockets lap Imola and Monaco. What is certain is that the feel of pure acceleration has been channelled into this slim-hipped, big-wheeled version of Polaris’ legendary RZR series competitive side by side. They’ve made it a single seat machine, paring away weight, adding a wide stance, centralising mass and adding fun factor. Part of this smile-inducing operation is to do with the wide 64-inch track in comparison to the slimmed down body, which gives the look of a classic dirt track midget car or a tiny Baja racer. Dual A-arms up front and trailing arm suspension in back help the body and

SAFETY FIRST

that single fighter-pilot seat glide over rough terrain, as the power from the four-stroke, liquid cooled DOHC engine is delivered via an automatic box and auto on-demand all wheel drive. That means a predictable, plantable back end and the added confidence of extra grip in the turns. Further confidence is inspired by the single-seat layout because, as we’ve seen on those F1 cars or even the McLaren of the same name, a central driving position is intuitive. You know exactly where the wheels are, in this case, you can see the front wheels through the chopped-out door frame panels, and place them on every apex, or for grip on every rock and boulder. Visibility out the back may not be as grand, but with this kind of speed, what’s behind you is of little concern. By taking away a seat, Polaris has added fun and acknowledged that many riders are out there to enjoy pushing the envelope as a way to relax and unwind, alone but for the throttle and the sound of worries being obliterated in the slipstream.

Year of the nice guy by Andy Bryenton

There’s an old saying that the good finish last and that it’s only an optimist who believes that ‘next year will be the year of the nice guy’. Well, when it comes to ecological credentials, it seems that year has finally dawned. A quick look at the Geneva Motor Show, the European Car of the Year, and our own local sales forecourts reveals that the electric revolution is gathering pace.

Some grumblers will call it nothing but ‘virtue signalling’ that some of the top carmakers in the world are trading in horsepower for voltage. However, you have to admit, machines like the showstopping Pininfarina Battista are both jaw-droppingly pretty and insanely fast. Did it steal the thunder of Bugatti’s Voiture Noir and the new mid-engined Aston Martin Vanquish Vision? Perhaps. There’s no denying that Aston’s Lagonda SUV concept was 100 per cent electric as well. Jaguar has scooped its first-ever European Car of the Year award. The only one to go to the Brit automaker, despite the E Type being utterly deserving if a couple of years too early. They’ve done so with the I-Pace, a tidy, unfussy design, which is still clearly a Jag, while clearly encapsulating modern style. It’s also purely electric. The march of the crossover SUV continues across all marques, makes and brands in the auto world, but this one is something different, and it delivers one of the key factors, which may be holding Kiwi early adopters back — range.

On the pace — Jaguar’s electric I-Pace scoops top honours in a first for the British automaker

It’s the biggest issue on the minds of local electric vehicle fans. People want to get behind the wheel, and as both the Euro car of the year and the Geneva Motor Show have proven, we have more choices than ever. Most of our power in New Zealand comes from renewable sources, so driving electric is less a signal of eco-

virtue than it is the genuine article. In a land with far-flung towns and urban centres connected with winding, isolated roads, range anxiety is real. Batteries continue to improve, and it’s when a trip from one town to another and back can be achieved without a lengthy recharge in the middle that the game will change in earnest.

How much better can I be? by John Arts

Part one The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be? Can I have less pain, more mobility and more energy? There are two parts to any successful nutritional therapy programme. The first is the actual measures we use. That usually centres on making changes to diet, supplements and in some cases referral to other therapies. The second is time. We all want fast results when in pain. The problem is that the changes in our bodies that created the problem often occurred for many years. While some people do get faster results, for most it is perseverance during the medium term that really counts. Over the years I have come to realise that often small changes can make a big difference. Someone could be taking a joint supplement and be getting little benefit. We change the active ingredient quantities, and there are significant improvements. For example, someone contacted me with

significant knee pain from osteoarthritis. It was painful and limited his mobility. His only medical options were strong pain relief and a future knee replacement. We made a number of enhancements to his diet. In most cases, this was more about substituting one food for another. I made changes to his supplement programme in particular targeting 1,600mg of highgrade chondroitin, the same amount of glucosamine and a number of antiinflammatory antioxidants including curcumin from turmeric. The results after six months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is now able to exercise; he has more energy and feels better.
