Horizons, in conjunction with territorial authorities, iwi, and landowners submitted five applications toward the fund in April this year. Four of these applications have been successful from a total of 33 projects throughout the country that will share $44 million from the fund collectively. Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon said three of these applications are for initiatives for the Manawatu River, Whangaehu River, and Lake Waipu, which Horizons will manage. The fourth successful application was made by the Lake Horowhenua Trust to further action lake improvement programmes on behalf of the Lake Horowhenua Accord partners. “It’s really pleasing to have secured such a significant amount of funding for projects that will make direct improvements to the quality of freshwater in our region,” said Mr Gordon. “All of our applications that included upgrading wastewater discharges from water to land were successful, which is a positive step forward.” Horizons natural resources and partnerships’ group manager Dr Jon Roygard said to have been the third most successful region to have secured central government funding, and to be able to progress freshwater interventions throughout the region, is really pleasing. “These projects will add further value to the regulatory and non-regulatory work already being undertaken, for which we

are seeing improved freshwater quality results,” said Dr Roygard. “Water quality trends across the 36 sites monitored region-wide from 20062015 show 16 per cent of sites have improved in turbidity, 22 per cent have improved in bacteria levels, 28 per cent have improved phosphorus levels, and over half of the 36 sites have improved nitrogen levels. “We know there is still more work to be done, and these newly funded projects will continue to move us in the right direction to improving freshwater for our communities.”

Calf-rearing challenge underway by Denise Gunn
This year’s challenge to raise the heaviest calf is underway in the Taranaki/Manawatu regions and open to all farmers and calf rearers as the main annual fundraiser for young farmers clubs. Competition manager Blair Briscoe said the competition is open to “anyone and everyone” after being first held last year. “We’ve been more proactive this year so the competition now has bigger and more prizes.” This year’s $10,000 prize pool includes a Honda two-wheeler motorbike, a waterblaster, $2,000 worth of Fonterra Farm Source vouchers and a Stihl chainsaw, with the competition winner getting first choice. “There will also be first, second and third place cash prizes in-house for young farmers club members.” Calves must be F12 Friesians and born between August 1-20. “Everyone who enters receives a NRM calf meal bag,” said Blair. Young farmers members will arrange transport to the weigh-in which is expected to be held on November 18. Calves will be collected a day or two beforehand and transported to a central location. “We are selling the calves onto a bull buyer and 25 per cent of the profits will be donated to Rural Support Trusts in Taranaki and Manawatu.” Remaining profits will be split between Taranaki and Manawatu young farmers clubs. Contact Blair on 0273 036 611 or email taraman.bullcomp@gmail.com

ylan’s home town of Raetihi has strong ties to farming and forestry industries, and he often stayed on farms and spent time in the forest with his uncles and father. On finishing secondary schooling in Whanganui, Dylan was employed in a meatworks. Then when a job in a steel mill in Auckland became available, he decided to taste life in the big city. “I tried living in Auckland but after finding out it wasn’t my cup of tea, I
decided to move home and give farming a go.” Dylan took up work on a farm with the Atihau Whanganui Incorporation. This Maori incorporation, established in 1970, manages vested land leases covering 101,000 acres in the Ruapehu region. In 2016 Dylan was awarded an Atihau training scholarship. For the past year, Dylan has worked as a general shepherd on another Atihau farm, Tawanui Station. The 1,700ha

Back in our colonial times, native timber exports were important. But, in the 1880s, with fewer trees and more farmland, meat exports went ahead. Now, after a wait of 136 years, timber is once more in front, at $5.87 billion, predicted to be more than a third of a billion dollars ahead of meat export returns into next year.

(1,400ha effective) station, managed by Steve Tapa, covers easy rolling to steep, rugged country. The property’s high average annual rainfall provides ideal conditions for growing grass allyear-round. Three hundred breeding cattle, mostly purebred Angus, are wintering on the property, along with 9,000 Romney breeding ewes. This year the farm is also carrying 100 R2 steers and 270 weaners. Tawanui is one of Atihau Whanganui Incorporation’s eight breeding and finishing properties. In his position as general shepherd, Dylan’s responsibilities include an assortment of tasks. “During winter I full-on feed out and move breaks for cattle, as well as scanning, with an odd stock shift here and there. With a rotational grazing system in place, the 21-year-old can be found moving stock throughout summer. Although farming was initially not Dylan’s first career choice, he now thoroughly enjoys it. “I love the physical aspect of everything and being able to be outdoors and working with my dogs,” he said. This year’s Ahuwhenua Awards’ judging process took place in Whangarei. The Young Maori Farmer Award, first held five years ago, is sponsored by Te Tumu Paeroa, and runs in conjunction with the Ahuwhenua Trophy. The award recognises up-and-coming, talented young Maori farmers, and encourages them to make farming a career choice. Dylan was one of three finalists in the Young Maori Farmer Award and selected from a number of entrants around New Zealand. Prior to the awards’ presentation, contestants went on field trips visiting different farms to further their knowledge. Dylan said in the lead-up to the interview stage of the competition, he

Feeding out during winter on Tawanui Station learnt facts, figures and information about Tawanui Station. “I was just locking down information on Tawanui like stock numbers and land. I was also preparing myself mentally to put myself forward as I was never confident.” He said the interview process was geared towards learning about him. “Seeing what goals I had in terms of the future as well as seeing what farming knowledge I had.” Dylan’s involvement in the competition gave him the opportunities to learn about farming systems in different regions. “I also stepped out of my comfort zone by learning how to speak in front of others. “The biggest thing I learnt is to really believe in myself.” When he’s not working, Dylan values spending time with his family and being outdoors. “Anything to do with hunting
and fishing, playing rugby and rugby league,” he said. Dylan would like to secure another full-time position in the region to test and learn more about farming. Currently studying Level Four National Diploma in Agribusiness Management, he plans to work towards completing Level Five next year. His long-term goal is to become a manager with the Atihau Whanganui Incorporation. “The biggest attraction to Atihau is that I am a shareholder and want to be looking after my land.”

orking from dawn, seeing the sunrise, and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day are also big drawcards. When Renee graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of AgriScience, her work experience amounted to just one summer job on a dairy farm for the practical assignment component of the degree. She said the main challenge faced in her short career was finding an employer willing to take on a new employee with limited experiences in dairy farming. “It was a case of needing experience to get more experience.” “However, studying agriculture at university helped set me apart from the crowd,” she said. “Focussing on being passionate and setting goals, and a plan to achieve within the industry led to success at the job interview.” Two years ago, Renee began working as a farm assistant on Andrew Hoggard’s farm in Kiwitea. “Due to a staff member leaving, I got promoted to herd manager
Two years ago, Renee began working on Andrew Hoggard’s dairy farm in Kiwitea after just seven months.” At peak, a herd of 560 cows are milked on the Hoggard’s 220ha milking platform. The property is supplemented with a 40ha runoff adjacent to the farm. Another 22ha runoff, located 15 minutes drive away, is used to graze youngstock. “I treat the cows that I work with like any human and have got a good bond with the herd which I believe every farmer should have,” said Renee.
“Seeing my achievements by having healthy and happy cows that produce well over the season is one of my reasons for loving farming.” The area’s mild climate and an average annual rainfall of around 900ml allows good pasture growth on the farm throughout the year. Excess pasture growth during the season is conserved as hay and pasture silage whilst maize silage is also grown on-

There is also possibly an opportunity to return to her husband Benjamin’s family farm to manage it. The couple have set a plan to buy the farm from Benjamin’s parents in nine year’s time. “We also plan to continue building equity to provide us with a means of achieving some of our longer term goals.”

However this does not occur every year,” Renee added. “In past seasons, forage crops such as fodder beet, turnips and chicory have also been grown.” An above average rainfall this year, along with a few cyclones, has seen a spike in mastitis in some of the cows. Damage to farm races has also led to cases of lame cows. “To resolve this, we increased the teat spray concentration and actively monitored the herd, utilising our cellsence units,” said Renee. “The

HELPING FARMING

With a shortfall in the day-to-day operating funding to the tune of more than $2.5 million in the current financial year alone, the Farming for Hospice scheme plays a crucial role to raise money for Arohanui Hospice.

the Feilding saleyards and sometimes at other yards around the region. The scheme’s cattle buyers also buy cattle on-farm. When the cattle reach slaughter weight, they are killed and proceeds go to Arohanui Hospice. Two of the cattle buyers, John McLean and Derek Tuck work hard to maintain good relationships with farmers across the region. This ensures the scheme’s coordinators know when cattle are available to purchase. “This has been particularly beneficial over the last few years as prices and demand for beef cattle have both risen sharply,” said Louise. Dairy farmers are also involved with donations from boner cows heading to the works.

Although MidCentral and Whanganui District Health Boards partially fund Arohanui Hospice, that shortfall has since grown significantly. Arohanui Hospice director of strategy and operations Louise Curtis said there are currently 280 farmers grazing stock for Farming for Hospice “This is a relatively low number on the back of strong sales before winter sets in. At our busiest time of year, we have upwards of 400 farmers grazing on our behalf.” Farming for Hospice cattle are often purchased through

Local lifestyle farmers are able to help too, rearing calves until they are big enough to be moved in with an existing herd on a bigger farm as part of the beef scheme. Donations from the proceeds of sales of sheep, lambs, deer, pigs, slinks, as well as produce and crops, are also welcomed. Arohanui Hospice expects to provide specialist end-of-life care to approximately 850 patients and their families this year. “We have approximately 250 patients in our care at any one time.” Most of those patients receive all of their care in their own homes, surrounded by their families, pets and personal treasures. A community team of 10 palliative care coordinators, who
are also registered nurses, five social workers and a spiritual care coordinator cover the Manawatu, Rangitikei, Horowhenua and Tararua regions. “This is a massive and diverse geographical area for our community team to cover, as they carry out more than 250 home visits every month,” said Louise. There is also a day hospice service in both Palmerston North and Levin. The inpatient unit at Arohanui Hospice has ten beds, and a team of 24 registered nurses supported by healthcare assistants. There is also one additional day bed used for patients who require a short visit to receive intravenous medication, a blood transfusion or similar. Louise said the importance of the support

received from the community cannot be overstated. “We are only partially funded by the MidCentral and Whanganui District Health Boards, leaving a shortfall in the day-to-day core operating funding of more than $2.5 million in the current financial year alone. “This is a huge amount of money to find from a relatively provincial and rural community. We are constantly overwhelmed and humbled by our community’s extraordinary generosity, both in terms of financial support and in-kind donations.” In-kind donations range from items on Arohanui Hospice’s wish list, which is published in the quarterly newsletter, to the provision of various support services by a variety of local businesses. Louise
said the hospice also benefits from a number of national partnerships. Arohanui Hospice has received the support of more than 600 volunteers, who have contributed more than 68,500 hours of their time, experience and skills in the last 12 months alone. “We genuinely could not do what we do for our patients and their families without all of this support, and are immensely grateful for every contribution.” “When we see the difference we make to a patient and their family, it really shows us how valuable all of that support is.” Farmers interested in helping the Farming for Hospice scheme, or making a donation, can contact Derek Tuck on tuckie@inspire.net.nz or John McLean at djmclean42@icloud.com.

Sheltering your block
Planning of the layout of your garden and giving your property a personal touch is all part of the excitement when you purchase a lifestyle block or small property. It is advisable to take time to plan the best locations for your plantings and ensure what you choose is well suited to the land and climate you live in. There are trees, shrubs and plants available to suit every situation. It is selecting the incorrect plants that is one of the biggest reasons for failure. Talk to your local gardening store or landscaper for ideas, look through magazines and ask others living in the area what they find grows best. Depending on rainfall and your soil type, the suggested time for planting is around May through to September. If starting from scratch ensure you allow enough space for lawns, large trees and perhaps a pond if you enjoy water lilies. Shelter is an important consideration. Having a good windbreak will give protection for yourself and your animals. Trees can be grown in a single row, clusters or multiple rows. They can include evergreen, deciduous, mixed species or single such as Poplars, Alders and Pine. Often planting large trees provides good amounts of shade. Plan the areas that are best to place shelter and shade for your animals. If there is wetland, native riparian plantings can also attract native birds. Shelter belts offer many beneficial
attributes to any rural property. They screen livestock from cold, wet and windy weather. In summer they provide shade for stock of all types, reducing heat stress. They also reduce moisture loss in grass and crops from drying winds. Plantings are also useful for hill stabilisation and preventing slips. Planting rows or clusters of trees is ideal for creating privacy or blocking out unwanted views such as buildings, neighbouring houses or roads. Ensure your fencing is in place before introducing animals to your block. Horses and cattle have long reaches, so it is best to fence 1.5m to 2m from your new plantings. Goats and sheep are good at reaching underneath a fence as well to get to the seedlings and vegetables which may be in their reach. A common mistake made in rural landscaping includes fencing driveways too close or narrowly so there is not enough room to plant trees on either side. People often enjoy the aesthetics of a tree-lined driveway. Make sure the trees you choose have enough room to grow out and up to avoid disappointment in future years. Planting on your property is an investment which adds value over time, doing it right the first time does pay off in the long term.

around road works
It is often last on the list, but transformation is rather easily achieved with your first start being the garden. What a difference a lawn and shrubs can make! Tailoring the look of your home’s exterior is one way to create a space that reflects your personality. There are many cheap landscaping ideas you can tackle on your own that are high impact without a high price tag. While that may involve a trip to your local garden centre, neighbours and friends may be a good source of supply as there are myriad plants that will thrive from cuttings. So before you head to the commercial outlets, take a look over the fence. There may be flowers or foliage that obviously enjoy your local environment and will easily transplant. In quick order, you may establish vibrancy where mud prevailed. Having established that landscaping doesn’t require a big budget, start to think outside the square. Pavers, cobblestones, tiles and wood can greatly enhance your surroundings when interspersed with grassland and garden plots. Re-use stuff that is low maintenance and cheap. This writer remembers a wonderful court yard of crazy paving
outside a Kiwi home, and in fact one of the components was part of an old gravestone that came from a building site. It made for an interesting conversation piece over cocktails. Something else that doesn’t require a big budget is water, and with a little ingenuity, a small waterfall over rocks, a gold-fish pool, or a tinkling fountain is easily created. Get creative. A cheap landscaping idea that creates great visual impact is the use of pavers and ground cover. If you have unused ground space in your yard or bare earth you’d like to cover up, use recycled or

broken pavers in a mosaic pattern of your choice. Perhaps you live near the coast as a great percentage of Kiwis do. In this case a beachcombing trip should provide some interesting driftwood, and wiring some bits together with a lick of wood preservative or paint could lead to some cool garden sculptures. Throw in a pergola perhaps, some climbing roses, a little garden furniture, and suddenly, you’ll find a home, outside the house, a place for summer fun and relaxation. Now — a place for the barbecue, and maybe — a pool.

Technology in the 21st century would no doubt baffle the farmers who broke in the Manawatu farms of last century but today it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry. The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs have advanced out of sight combining real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone . GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. That’s vital for the bottom line as better control and spread of costly fertiliser, accurate spraying and vegetation control is possible, reducing overall expenses, producing a higher yield, and even more importantly creating a more environmentally friendly farm with strict application controls possible. Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements and prescribing and applying site-

are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields. The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to the large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques. Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting natural resources for future use. Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient. The accuracy of GPS creates farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations and distances between points of interest. GPS allows farmers to accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or just monitor conditions.

Managing urinary nitrogen on your farm How much can we learn from a handful of grass? The answer is both remarkably simple and incredibly complex — but thankfully, modern scientific techniques can assess the biology and chemistry of just such a sample to provide some clear-cut advice for adjusting farming practices. It’s all thanks to a Kiwi company who are leading the world. Raymond Burr from QLabs is a farmer first and a man of science in equal measure. From his early days share farming sheep and beef to converting a large spread to dairy in the King Country in ‘89, he knows the challenges farmers face in a constant race to improve their profitability. Raymond studied at Massey University, and his investigations into soil and pasture health with QLabs today would have amazed his professors back then. Then again, the foundation of what QLabs offer the farming sector is based on sound common sense. QLabs have been granted a patent on their latest form of herbage analysis, which can very accurately look at the nutritional content of even a small representative 500gram sample of grass and drill down into its composition. One major advantage is detecting levels of nitrogen, which cannot be stored by ruminant animals like cattle. This means a very accurate forecast of urinary nitrogen content
can be built up — a valuable tool for evaluating efficient farm management. Qlabs patented method means that with a single test of a sample of pasture a farmer can fine tune and plan ahead for a number of factors. Environmental responsibility is one, but maximising the nutrition of every square foot of pasture is another — and that means better yields whether for dairy and drystock. Potential health issues can be nipped in the bud long before they become a vet’s problem. “The science may be high tech, but the principle is simple,” says Raymond. “Arm yourself with knowledge and get the optimum out of your farm.” In the 1980s the rising plate meter was invented by a farmer, and accurate pasture budgeting soon followed. From the early 1990s we became proficient at growing more protein by applying more Nitrogen. It is time to move on with the latest patented method invented by an ex-farmer. Now for a relatively low cost, you can monitor what your ruminating animals
are about to eat. Increasing efficiency will increase profitability and decrease

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints. They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin. The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes. These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain. Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss. Thirdly high levels of CS appear
to be anabolic — it appears to be able to generate new cartilage. The mechanisms here seems to be that CS stimulates chondrocyte cells to increase production of collagen and other compounds needed to make new cartilage. By way of example I have been helping someone with OA in her knees, back and hands. She had been using a joint supplement heavily weighted towards glucosamine rather than chondroitin. We added a supplement with high levels of CS with noticeable improvements on this combination with less pain and more mobility. I am sure the extra curcumin and Omega 3 all helped with these improvements. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Nation’s tastiest steak It is important for us chefs to appreciate this and understand that an outstanding steak dish and dining experience starts well before the restaurant kitchen,” says Shaun. Prior to the judging day, scientists at Carne technologies tested all 305 of the competition entries to determine the top 20 per cent in each competition class to progress through to judging. The chefs assessed each steak against a set of criteria such as aroma, tenderness, juiciness and taste. The first round of judging determined the medal placings in each class. From here the gold medal winning steaks in each class, excluding Lifestyle, were re-judged to decide the 2017 Grand Champion and the 2017 Brand winner. The competition’s six Best of Breed classes were open to all New Zealand beef farmers and included classes for European, British Angus, British Hereford, British Other and Crossbreeds and a class for Lifestyle farmers. The Best of Brand competition included

Oi!
New Zealand’s most tender and tasty steak was announced at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin competition recently with Tim and Kelly Brittain from Otorohanga accepting the 2017 Grand Champion title for their Angus steak, in the competition’s 15th year. The judges, including renowned chefs, Ben Bayly, Gareth Stewart and Shaun Clouston completed two rounds of judging before the Brittains’ steak was deemed the county’s top from an initial line-up of 64 semi-finalists. Being recognised as the country’s top beef producer is an achievement Tim and Kelly say they are extremely proud of. “Each year our entries into this competition have stepped up a level and I am so proud that all of our work and efforts can be celebrated. This outcome is a significant achievement and something that Kelly and I have been working towards,” says Tim. Chef judge, Shaun Clouston recognises the way in which this competition shines light on the country’s beef farmers, acknowledging that the high quality of beef within the New Zealand food service is down to their fine-tuned farming activities. “The paddock to plate link is one that New Zealanders are really interested in.

Rural women in the limelight
Save Lives
Since the very early days of visiting farms and pushing my multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, I always made an effort to get both partners around the table so that they could understand the true benefits of a BioGro certified natural fertiliser, how it reacts within the soil, increasing humus (carbon), which holds both minerals and water, releasing these to the plant on request.

The raw materials we use to produce our fertilisers come directly out of the environment so they have no impact on the environment — they are completely safe and sustainable. It’s amazing, the reliance some farmers have for chemical fertilisers and the NPK balance sheet theory — a false theory at that, with no science behind it. As the main nurturers of life, farming women are always open to alternative farming methods and alternative

medicines which have been strongly promoted by Tineke from Homeopathic Farm Services (HFS). She has won a few awards over the years for her efforts. So, in today’s farming world there will be some changes taking place, but I believe they will be more conservative and more focussed on producing better stock feed from the farm — keeping it simple and effective, after all rumen animals are the best converters of grass into protein, milk and meat. Don’t be tricked into fodder beet, kale and other non-grass products. The only ones that gain here are the corporations, and please note that they’re all offshore corporations. Stick with grass. There are plenty of top quality grass seed merchants in New Zealand, without needing to go offshore — let’s back our own people. As a small independent NZ owned natural fertiliser company, we are already fielding strong enquiry from farmers that have lost faith in the NPK chemical system — it is harsh on both the farm and the environment. Agrissentials natural certified system works together with Mother Nature, storing minerals within the organic matter, building humus for better water
retention within the soil, increasing microbial wealth within the soil which attracts strong numbers of worms setting up a recycling system that captures all waste falling upon the farm, back into top soil. This is a major recycling system taking all the dead life back through the crucible of life to regenerate new life and new soil. Using Agrissentials fertilisers you can install this live, recycling system on your farm which will be regenerating top soil for your farm — how good is that, working with Mother Nature on your side. So, to all those farming mums and farming women who are shoulder to shoulder with their partners doing the daily chores, day in and day out, we take this opportunity to thank them and all farmers throughout the land for driving our agriculture system forward. ROAD SAFETY
Hawke’s Bay shearer Rowland Smith has emulated older brother Matthew by smashing a world shearing record in England. The 30-year-old father of two shore 644 romney and crossbred ewes in eight hours at Trefranck Farm in Cornwall, beating the previous record of 605 set by Invercargill shearer Leon Samuels in Southland this year. It was the latest in a string of world shearing records in the family, including the ultimate record of 731 ewes in nine hours by Matthew Smith at Tefranck last year. Rowland grew up around Ruawai in Northland and now farms a small block at Maraekakaho near Hastings. In January 2011 he shore 562 in a twostand eight-hour record of 1066 with his second brother Doug at Waitara Station, between Napier and Taupo. A year earlier Matthew had set a solo eight-hour record of 578 on the same property. Rowland’s wife, Ingrid had also been in on the action in a King Country woolshed in January 2009 when she set a women’s solo-eight-hour lambs’ record of 470 while also claiming a two-stand record of 903 with her mother Marg Baynes, of Wairoa. The record-breaking family members were all present as the latest milestone unfolded. At two-metrestall, Rowland was comfor tably ahead of the target as he shore four

While Rowland averaged 44.72 seconds a sheep caught, shorn and despatched, and with cutter changes every 15 minutes, the shearing time on the sheep, each carrying over 3kg of wool, were regularly cut under 35 seconds. The record was shorn under the close control of judges Eddie Archer, of South Africa, John Fraser, of New Zealand, and Welsh officials Arwyn Jones and Martyn David, while a large team of helpers included wool handlers Leanna Wharerau, of Hastings, and Gwennan Paewai, of Wales.

Why Use Hutches or Pens?
Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.
• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment
• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

Failure to consider the big picture I see some limitations in our farming research where so called advances in one area are creating problems in another area.
POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys? Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.
Most vets have vast knowledge of animal disease, diagnosis and treatment but have not been trained in soil science. This is not a criticism but an observation. Recently I spent time in Denmark with a senior vet and nutritionist focussed on finding the reason for animal diseases, particularly in Europe. This is part of a treatment plan for farmers who can lose cows very quickly from clostridia and similar diseases like botulism. Dr Erri’s research has led him to the soil for answers. Unbalanced soil nutrients lead to unbalanced feed which is leading to the inability of cows to naturally fight diseases without the aid of vaccines and medicines to keep them healthy. A so-called advance in nutrition, a trend beginning in New Zealand, is the use of increasing rumen bypass feeds to produce milk. In Europe this trend is well developed and although this practice produces milk, Dr Erri commented that it is at the expense of animal health. Cows are barely completing two lactations under
this system. He said that nutritionists are treating a cow like a machine and by bypassing the rumen are not respecting the full nutrition that the bugs in the rumen need to complete their job to maintain a healthy cow and her immune system.

The conditions in a cow’s rumen also dictate the bugs which carry on out into effluent ponds which farmers are then encouraged to apply to the soil as fertiliser. Good effluent containing healthy biology can then contribute to a healthy soil. Another so called advancement in science is the heavy use of chlorine in our cowsheds. This chlorine is doing massive damage to our effluent ponds. The chlorine being used all produces residuals which upon entering the pond wipe out the beneficial biology. The next step is the sterilisation of our effluent and eventually sterilisation of our soil. Furthermore a soil with compromised beneficial bacteria will create an abundance of pathogenic bacteria which will eventually get to the feed which has grown in that soil. If only cows could talk, I’m sure they would have something to say about it. Amazing what you see when you look at the big picture.

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K
Applications to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund have opened, with $7 million available for applied research projects led by the primary sector that help boost rural communities, our economy, and the sustainability of our environment. “SFF aims to bring together farmers, growers and foresters to work alongside scientists and researchers to solve a problem or seize an opportunity,” says Justine Gilliland, MPI’s director of investment programmes. “The fund is based on the philosophy that those closest to the problem, or opportunity, are best placed to understand how it can be dealt with and how to get buy-in from their industry and community. The fund has been operating since 2000 and projects have come from across the country and all parts of the primary sector. “Recently we marked the 1,000th SFF project with the 1,000 Projects and Counting booklet, which is available on our website. Projects funded include restoring local environments, fighting pests, researching and promoting best practice, applying new technologies, developing new food opportunities, and facilitating education and training programmes.” Applicants can apply for up to $200,000 a year for a maximum
of three years. The maximum total grant available from MPI is $600,000. Projects require a non-government funding contribution of at least 20 per cent. Most successful projects are able to leverage a high proportion of other funding or in-kind support to complement the SFF grant. “Each year we receive a very high calibre of project applications. This year we are encouraging applications that showcase new and innovative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities in the primary industries” says Ms Gilliland. “We welcome any groups keen to tackle a shared problem or develop a new opportunity related to the primary industries to apply for the fund. Anyone interested in applying should contact an MPI investment adviser to discuss their ideas as soon as possible.” Applications close on September 14, 2017 for projects beginning July 1, 2018. Feedback will be given on ideas and draft applications until August 31, 2017.

RURAL WHEELS
Practicality and purpose by Andy Bryenton
Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how. When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which
allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The easiest fold-flat seating system we have ever seen drops the back row for even more space — literally whitewaretransporting volumes of it. And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another

successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3 litre V6, and a torquey 2.2 litre diesel. That means that the Santa Fe doesn’t just deliver the whole clan to school, work, holidays and sports events. It also delivers smiles for the driver as well — and that’s well worth a look. The addition of a little spice into the SUV mix, with crisp handling to match a suite of practical details, is enough to make this seven-seater stand out from the crowd.

Return of the originator

The 1970s was a dire time for the auto industry — while the United States plunged from muscle-car excess into oil crisis panic, the great automakers of the continent struggled with budget cuts and technical issues. Even the sports cars and supercars of the late 70s failed to measure up to the style and sophistication of older models. But change was coming. In 1976, Volkswagen — largely famous for their long-lasting Beetle at this point — took their small Golf hatchback and equipped it with a fuel injected 1.6-litre engine. The result was a small car that blew the doors off several of its more ‘sporting’ competitors, founding a dynasty of nimble, smile-inducing Golf GTI models down the years. And, of course, a host of imitators. By the mid-1980s nearly every major automaker had a hot hatch in the running, but the benchmark always wore a VW badge. Safety and practicality intruded into the world of the GTI slowly, making later editions bulkier and slower for a time. But all that is over, and the latest Golf GTI is a back-to-the-roots driving machine. Let’s begin with a top speed pushing 249km/h, with a feisty 229 horsepower under the hood. Add in decades of development in crafting a responsive chassis and suspension setup, as well as what is perhaps one of the two best front-wheeldrive designs ever to hit the tarmac (Honda build the other one), and you’ve got a recipe for excitement. Tempered, of course, with a suite of electronic safety measures which ensure thrills without spills. Then again, for some the bold styling and unabashed firepower of the Golf GTI may not be enough. If you’re the type who drizzles Tabasco sauce on raw chilli peppers in search of more kick, the even more powerful Golf R is a halo option, with more than 300 horses under the bonnet and boasting the title of ‘fastest Golf ever’.
Either car is sure to serve up plenty of fun, cleaving to the original formula — a car which is mild mannered on city streets, light on fuel, easy to park —
and which can blow traditional sports cars into the weeds on twisty, engaging roads. And while station wagon and electric-powered versions of this iconic
EITHER WAY IT’S 20K
hatchback also exist, it’s the GTI badge that continues to push the limits of small-car performance, even after forty years.
