THE FOREST STORY

This year one farmerelected director is being elected to the DairyNZ board, with candidate nominations opening on Tuesday, August 21. DairyNZ chairman, Jim van der Poel, says this year’s election is an opportunity for a dairy farmer to bring their sector experience and strategic thinking to the board table. “As a director, you are in a unique position to influence and shape the direction of DairyNZ and the dairy sector, and we are keen to tap into some of the talented, skilled and business savvy dairy farmers we have,” says Mr van der Poel. “We are looking for someone who has the best interests of all New Zealand dairy farmers at heart and leadership and governance experience. Our board works with a broad range of stakeholders, from our dairy farmers through to government and communities, so their people skills and ability to engage with all sorts of people is crucial.” An interest in the Dairy Tomorrow strategy, broad dairy sector knowledge, strong business skills and some exposure to research and development principles is also preferred. The DairyNZ board consists of five farmer-elected directors and three boardappointed directors. This year’s farmerelected director role is currently vacant. Nominations are also being taken this year for one farmer to join the DairyNZ Directors Remuneration Committee, which considers and recommends

remuneration for directors each year. All farmers paying a levy on milk solids to DairyNZ are eligible to stand for the Board of Directors and the Directors Remuneration Committee. Candidate nominations will be open August 21–September 14. Voting opens for dairy farmer levy payers on October 1. Election results will be announced at the DairyNZ Annual General Meeting on October 31. For more information on the nomination process, visit dairynz.co.nz/ agm.

Forestry has come out of the shadows into the spotlight. Our industry is undoubtedly New Zealand’s main weapon against climate change by locking up vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We export more than $6 billion worth of forest products a year. And we need to get better at preventing debris going down rivers in floods. Telling our story on television is overdue. So, broadcaster Don Carson is about to take us through what forestry is all about.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES  August 2018

Foxton New World Supermarket’s Makalah Stevens has been awarded the Lower North Island Butcher Apprentice of the Year title for the second year in a row. Makalah was up against other butchers from across the lower North Island as they battled it out in the regional stages of the 2018 Alto Butcher and ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year. Competitors were given two hours to break down a size 16 chicken, a boneless beef rump and a full pork loin. They were also required to produce some compulsory cuts and utilise the remaining meat to demonstrate their creativity by value-adding. The 21-yearold has held an interest in butchery from a young age. “My dad’s a butcher, so I’ve been learning from him all my life and having the experience from competing last year definitely helped,” said Makalah. The Alto Butcher and ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year is a prestigious event and well-regarded by the retail meat trade. Head judge, Matt Grimes, has been involved in the competition for 13 years. He said the skills needed to become a great butcher are ever-growing. “Yearon-year these competitions get harder

and harder to judge as the skill level of the butchers and the apprentices just keeps on improving. “I am blown away with the craftsmanship and creativity seen today, and I believe our industry is in very good hands with the talent we have coming through in these competitions.” Aaron Pohatu from New World Greenmeadows in Napier won the lower North Island Alto Butcher of the Year category. The winning butcher and butcher apprentice from each region will compete at the grand final in Auckland on Thursday, September 6. There will be 10 finalists in each category at the competition. The first three will be the winners from each of the three regionals. The remaining competitors will be taken from the top seven marks across the nation. In the lead-up to the grand final, Makalah plans to keep working on her speed. “I might not finish as many products in the final — so I can get every item on my table perfect,” she said.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY DENISE GUNN When husband and wife, Jim Kebbell and Marion Wood, bought a block of land south of Levin in 1975, their vision was to grow vegetables. More than 40 years later, their Common Property Farm in Te Horo is producing a wide variety of organic vegetables, supplying six stores in the North Island.

T

he initial suggestion that Common Property Farm should be organically-farmed came from Marion’s mother, Frances. When Jim, a fifth-generation conventional farming family member, realised the effects of industrial chemicals on the soil and food supply chain, he agreed. A decade later the vegetable harvests had become so bountiful that an outlet was needed to sell the excess. Jim noticed a ‘for rent’ sign in the window of a Wakefield Street property in Wellington and decided to set up shop. In November 1991, the first Commonsense store,

formerly called Commonsense Organics, opened. Five other stores have since opened with four more in Wellington and one in Auckland. The Commonsense team believe in selling food that is ‘good for you, good for the earth’. Brassicas, leaks, salad greens, capsicum, zucchini, aubergine, lemons, microgreens, strawberries and 86 varieties of vegetable seedlings are all grown on the 11.6ha property. “Ninety per cent of produce goes directly to specialised organics stores — the balance goes to organic wholesalers,” said Jim. “Organic food is good, nutritious food, which keeps people healthy and looks after the environment in hosts of ways.” Jim said the five sections at Common Property Farm; green vegetables, strawberries, salad greens, microgreens and seedlings are each managed by an independent grower. Casual staff are employed when needed for planting and harvesting. The path to success has had the usual ups and downs that come with growing food for market. Various weather conditions have affected crops over the years, and transportation for getting the produce to sale outlets has also proved an issue at times. The lack of organic seed and the sourcing of these has been challenging too. When the first store opened in Wellington, Jim had to remortgage the family home to enable this to proceed. Now the family-owned business has grown to 130 employees in the six stores. “Basically, we set up Commonsense Organics to mainstream organics, and we wanted to show people that organic vegetables tasted the best in the world and they are for everybody,” said Marion. One of the many business highlights has included a consistent high-quality of produce and a growing demand for organic food. Jim and Marion’s daughter Lucy began working in the first Commonsense store as a 16-year-old. After working for several years as a corporate lawyer, she is the business’s corporate manager and chair of the Commonsense board. “We just look at every aspect of the way we do things in the most sustainable way,” said Lucy. “We are a group of people working in our community, in our environment and we have to look after those things.” Jim and Marion are also on the board, along with Anna Pitches. Anna has been part of the Commonsense

team for many years, starting as a shop assistant in 1991. She moved up to become manager of the Wellington city store, followed by operations manager at head office. Anna is now the chief executive officer. Marion is the executive director of Commonsense and is on the Fair Trade Wellington Board, chairs the Organic Traders Association of New Zealand and has also served as vice chair of the Sustainable Business Network. “So many people are concerned about ethical trading,” said Marion. “They want to know where their produce comes from, where this product comes from, and that the workers were treated fairly, that the land is being treated with respect. “All of these things are more and more important, particularly with the younger generation. We think that this holds such hope for the future.”

With set core values in place, which include growing organic food, fair trading and social responsibility, packaging and waste management, the Commonsense board members are guardians of those ethics. Jim’s interest, involvement and service to New Zealand’s organics industry has seen him awarded with an honorary life membership of BioGro NZ. “The organic movement tries to retain and build up the fertility of the soil, out of which healthy, strong plants grow,” said Jim.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES PART ONE

BY DENISE GUNN

Buying a 40 acre block of land, subdivided from a former sheep and beef farm near Wanganui, gave Walter and Diana Loader a blank canvas to work on.

W

hile Walter, a retired civil engineer, immediately set about laying out the farm on an organised grid pattern, Diana was able to further develop her horticultural passion by planting trees. Assisted by various family members, windbreaks were planted first, followed by trialling a mixture of fruit and nut trees, which included apricots, almonds, chestnuts, feijoas, hazels, macadamias and walnuts. Nuts are ready for gathering in May, so Diana aptly named the farm Nuts ‘n May. In 2012, 26 years after Walter and Diana bought the property, the couple

sold the farm to their daughter Hel and her partner Scott Wilson. Walter and Diana continue to live on the property. Diana now has more time to devote to growing show flowers, mainly dahlias and daffodils, and Walter is often found on his ride-on mower checking the progress on farm developments. The combination of Hel’s interest in horticulture, together with Scott’s mechanical repair knowledge, proved to be essential skills for nut farming. “Scott grew up in Thames, and I grew up in Wanganui, so while not country folk we had an understanding of rural life,” she said. The couple met in 1990 while

pulp and paper.” Hel then returned to her love of gardening, managing the horticultural division for an Auckland landscaping company. “My daughter, Fran, was a baby when my parents started the farm and she has grown up planting trees, driving tractors and herding stock,” said Hel. “I’ve watched her and trees both grow.” “There is something immensely satisfying in seeing a slender knee-high sapling turn from a stick in the ground into a huge tree that carpets the ground with a bounty of nuts. It’s also very humbling as you realise you don’t own land — it owns you.” As Walter and Diana aged, Scott and Hel spent more time at the farm helping with the harvest, nut selling and doing the heavy work. The farm’s grid of mature deciduous Italian alders, Alnus cordata, protects the 1,000 walnut trees, Juglans regia, as well as assorted fruit and nut trees. The windbreaks are trimmed annually. “As well as providing protection for the walnuts, which can be top-heavy when cropping, the alder root system fixes nitrogen to the soil, the root system helps draw water up to the surface, while the hedges slow wind evaporation meaning when other farms are in drought, the orchards stay green. Walnuts are large trees — they are planted, so they have at least 80m2 of space.” said Hel. Hel said this helps limit damage and provides airflow for pollination and blight prevention. “We crown lift out mature trees to around three metres to enable access for mowing and harvesting.

August 2018

Hel alongside the first of the early walnuts that have been bagged up ready for deliveries “Summer pruning helps keep the trees from dragging to the ground when laden with nuts, while major limbing up is done in late autumn once the sap recedes.” All the young trees in the orchard are fertilised with a mixture of compost, aged animal manure and blood and bone. Older trees are dressed with lime and potash to help fruit set and given a three-yearly application of boron. Due to Diana’s diligence with pest control in the early stages of establishing the farm, a possum hasn’t been seen on the property for more than 20 years. “Diana was instrumental in organising a wide possum baiting programme to

provide a predator-free ring around nearby Bushy Park,” said Hel. “The possum programme stopped once the park installed a predator-proof fence, but local initiatives are looking at restarting it.” Although hedgehogs and rats can be a problem during harvest, the walnuts are collected daily, and pigs clean up surplus nuts. As a result, pests haven’t caused too much of an issue. “Timms and gas-powered traps are used when needed,” said Hel. “Nuteating birds such as Rosella and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo can also be a pest, but a shotgun usually moves them on.”

The orchards are grazed by sheep during winter and stock removed from under the trees in January. It allows time to mow and groom the orchard blocks in preparation for harvesting. The trees and nuts are spray free. “We make our own leaf mould, compost and pot ash. Fertilisers that are brought in are sourced from organic ranges such as OrganiBOR.” Geese in the mixed fruit orchard keep the grass short and eat codling moth and other pest larvae. Berkshire pigs eat windfall fruit and surplus nuts, and in return fertilise the trees. Part two in following issue.

discovered BY DENISE GUNN

While growing up on the family dairy farm, Linda Wood was often outdoors helping her father. Now she is taking steps towards more diverse career options within the industry, through a degree in agricommerce.

L

inda was unsure which career path to follow when she left high school and also undecided about immediately starting tertiary studies. As she always enjoyed the practical side of being on the farm and wasn’t afraid of getting her hands dirty, she took up a farming role on her parents’ 290ha Opiki farm. This experience gave her the opportunity to work full-time and learn more skills. “I have always liked the practical side of being outside and doing handson things, so doing this job fitted well,” said Linda. Although this was her first dairy farm position, Linda’s childhood on the property gave her a valuable start in

the industry. She has now completed two seasons on the farm, learning on the job. “I’ve built a lot of skills which, for example, include fencing and how to fix a water trough, calving was a big achievement as I learnt how to calve a cow myself with ease.” she said. Working with animals and watching them grow has been one of farming’s highlights. “Every animal has its own personality,” said Linda. She also stepped up into the role as herd manager, facing the challenge of decision-making on her own. “Basically, I have become far more indoctrinated in the farming industry; an industry I’m passionate about.”

Working with animals and watching them grow is one of farming’s highlights

“This inhibited my ability to traverse the farm, so by putting in the extra effort I was able to overcome this challenge.” Although dairy farming’s early morning starts and long days are tiring, Linda turned this around by appreciating sunrises and making the most of each day. This year Linda was recognised in the Manawatu Dairy Industry Awards, placing third in the dairy trainee category. Linda believes the dairy industry holds many lucrative and exciting career prospects.

Linda found one of the more difficult aspects of dairy farming has been working in cold and windy weather. “Having to wear a tonne of layers and somehow managing to get a gumboot full of water,” she said. However, a sense of humour helped her get through these conditions, along with the view that eventually sunshine and warmth would follow. “Just learning to enjoy it and have a bit of fun sliding around in the mud.” Linda said getting the quad bike stuck on wet, muddy days proved testing too.

She’s found Young Farmers ideal for keeping connected with farming activities and events, as well as socialising with people who have similar interests. Linda said opportunities are limitless in the farming sector. “The agricommerce degree will help me to realise what areas of the agriculture industry I enjoy the most, to pursue as a career.”

ADVERTORIAL

Time to get a prostate check

It’s Blue September again, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

Research shows that rural men in New Zealand are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, diagnosing the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting a routine check is very important. Farmlands has joined the fight against prostate cancer this year as Blue September sponsors along with AGPAC supplying blue silage wrap. Up and down the country people are organising Blue Dos. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out the website for upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue BBQ or a blueberry bake-off? Or organise a Blue

Friday like many workplaces organise. It gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food and focusses on awareness of the number one cancer in Kiwi men. More than 600 die from it every year. It doesn’t need to be that way. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his Dad was diagnosed with the disease and how hard it was to talk about it, and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them — the outcome was good. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more information and register for a Blue Do at blueseptember.org.nz.

Helping sore joints

by John Arts

At any given time I am helping hundreds of people improve their joint health. My goal is to help prevent further cartilage loss, reduce inflammation and improve the function of the joint. In most cases, we can get significant improvements in joint comfort and mobility. I have one client who was referred to an orthopaedic specialist with suspected OA in his left knee. It was sore, stiff and swollen. He had X-rays, which confirmed that there was significant cartilage loss and changes to the bones of the joint. His right knee caused him no problems, but the specialist decided to X-ray that one as well. What he found was that arthritis in his ‘good’ right knee had more cartilage loss than the sore one. You would wonder how that could be. How can moderate arthritis cause significant pain while the worst knee did not? The answer is probably inflammation. The sore knee was obviously inflamed. It was swollen (puffy), stiff and very sore. The more degenerated right knee had no swelling and no pain. After a few months, his sore knee is much improved. The body can be quite cynical at times. The normal way damaged tissue is healed is through initiating the process of inflammation. In simple

terms, blood vessels allow more fluid into the damaged area — it causes swelling and pain. I have found that OA symptoms are caused as much by inflammation than actual cartilage loss. The first step is to reduce inflammation. We do this by adding omega-3 from oily fish and antiinflammatory antioxidants especially curcumin from turmeric. The second thing is to add therapeutic amounts of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate to stabilise cartilage. Chondroitin is most important as it is an actual constituent of cartilage but only at levels of 800mg plus daily. Initially, I like to target 1,500mg to help get faster results. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. PALMERSTON NORTH

A relaxing day out by Jill Dickie

A trip into Palmerston North for a spot of shopping can easily turn into an enjoyable full day out, and you don’t need much planning done ahead of time other than ensuring you take the right company with you! Your day out could start, for example, by parking your car and picking up an electric cycle and head along the riverside trail for a non-strenuous ride and enjoy the autumn colours. It can be busy with runners and dog walkers, but the views of the river are stunning. From there, head back towards town and stop for an hour or two at the rugby museum, and take in the nostalgia of the nation’s most favourite sport. There is plenty of history, and you can even test your skills goal kicking or try out the scrum and tackling machines. After returning your bikes, it’s worthwhile taking a walk around The Square, checking out the sights and stopping for a light lunch along the way. The water fountains encourage

the ducks in — so sit back and enjoy their antics and the sound of the clock tower chiming. There are a number of walkways to enjoy with bridges taking you over the water, as you meander your way towards the Victoria Rose Garden to indulge in their beauty and fragrance. Fitting in that shopping will be a breeze after such a relaxing morning, and there are plenty of directions to head depending on your needs — everything is available! If shopping isn’t your thing perhaps a wander through one of the art galleries or the museum could fill in a

sally

couple of hours before the night market begins at the library. Again, there is an abundance of choices with the many stalls offering their wares, and a visit to the food truck area will satisfy too, with many

cultures providing foods from their native country. On the return trip home, consider the day spent in good company and shared moments, and you should feel a mountain of gratitude for the country we live in!

A question most smaller-scale farmers are faced with at some point in their year is “Do I do it myself or get someone in?” A decision can be made with some simple calculations and consideration in weighing up the pros and cons. Farmers should consider whether investing in machinery is affordable for their business, especially the more expensive items such as hay balers, seeders and sprayers, and whether the upgrade will generate further revenue or become a drain on resources. Upgrading or purchasing new equipment has benefits, such as maintaining control of jobs and getting them completed when required, and the individual farmer may also have the skill level required, but at times when there are several jobs demanding attention — it can be easier to call a contractor for assistance. Doing so frees up the farmer’s time for other tasks, and contractors generally have the right tools for the job — and can get the job done faster. Hiring a contractor is also a tax deduction for businesses. There are services available for a range of farm tasks ranging from paddock preparations, crop planting and

harvesting to animal management and husbandry practices such as lamb and calf marking, crutching and shearing. The costs of repair and maintenance, as well as registration and overall care of plant and machinery, falls on the contractor. On the other hand, at times of peak demand, such as haymaking, for example, a contractor can be held up or run behind schedule, or bad weather may affect the job’s completion, resulting in penalties for the farmer. Building a good relationship with a reliable contractor is essential to success, as is working in with

neighbours to secure several jobs for the contractor while in the area. Ownership costs are relatively high if a machine is only used for a short time during the year, such as a hay baler, but some implements, for instance, a tractor, can be used often, so there may be a ‘break even’ point when the cost is calculated over a per hectare basis. When evaluating machinery options, farmers should not only consider the capital cost of the equipment — but also their seasonal challenges and the risk of delays in getting the job done on time.

FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

by Jill Dickie

There is not much better to a farmer’s eye than looking down a straight fence line, all the posts in perfect position, no tops poking one way or another, and all the same height. A simple feat to achieve? Not if your fencing contractor doesn’t have the skills! It’s important to choose someone who will do the job you want done. You need to be specific about your needs, and these needs may vary depending on the location of the fence. For example, a new fence along your driveway, or that is visible every time you look out your house window; you are going to want that completely perfect, compared to a short length down on the back boundary that you mostly look at from the paddock as opposed to down the line. You will need to establish with your contractor whether they are supplying all materials for a complete job, or whether they will use items you already have available, which would save you money on the job. If you already have a box of fencing staples in the shed or three to four rolls of clean wire — there is no point in them supplying those for the job.

FREE No Obligation Quotes Professional Water Well Drillers Well Drilling for 43 Years

Next, are they collecting the required materials and bringing to the job or is it feasible for you to provide what they need? It may be another cost saver for you. Arranging payment terms is another consideration. Do they require some of the payment up front to purchase posts, or will they invoice you the total amount at completion? Will that payment be required within seven days or on 20th of next month? One more thing to

QUARRY ROCK Cow Race, face rock, 40mm/20mm crushed grades available

think about — does your neighbour need any work done? It could be worth asking, particularly if either of you only have a small job needing done, as it may save the contractor some running around with their post driver! When the job is complete, and you can cast an eye down that tidy new fence, you’ll appreciate the money invested in not doing the job yourself and consequently annoyed at the one post that leans the wrong way!

Your decisions can affect how much enjoyment you get from your outdoor living areas so think about your site as a whole and have a clear idea of what you use the outdoor area for such as entertaining, playing, growing fruit and vegetables or space for pets. Your design will be a determining factor in the amount of effort you need to spend watering and maintaining the area. Soil type, house placement, waterways, climate and how much sun and shade you have helps determine what and where to plant. Too much shade from plants in winter might make your home cold and damp; however, planting certain plants in full sun may not be good for them. Knowing the mature size of trees and shrubs you may include in your project is important. Trees and shrubs can create screens between your home and neighbourhood or road noise to lower noise levels creating a healthier mood for all to enjoy. Planting to protect against erosion is beneficial if your site is near a stream or on the coast. Trees also provide some protection against stormwater erosion and reducing run-off, whilst their root

The dream to build

by Ann van Engelen

Whether you are designing and building yourself, or buying set plan, there’s nothing more exciting than a brand-new house or fully-renovated historic home. Whether you are living on a farm, lifestyle block or in an urban setting, the kiwi dream is home ownership and no matter what scale you are thinking, it is important to have an understanding of council regulations for your area, contracts and exclusions, time frames for the project completion, costs and possible hidden extras. The time difference for project completion varies and generally unless you are buying a ‘house package’ an accurate final quote can be difficult, particularly if you are not set in your plans and ideas. Every ‘change’ you make once the build is underway will add to your costs as you are charged for such so ensure you have a set layout of the complete house design before starting. Ensure when you are asking for quotes that you are comparing the same things because at times cheaper quotes will leave out items you have to put in later, or under-quote on items your contractor expects you to change later. It is suggested that you allocate at least 10 per cent extra funding for unforeseen costs to help keep stress to a minimum.

Websites such as BRANZ.co.nz and building.govt.nz have useful information explaining building codes, safety standards, sign off and maintenance. BRANZ is an independent and impartial research, testing and consulting organisation inspiring the building and construction industry to provide better buildings for New Zealanders — transforming insightful research into accessible, actionable knowledge. When requesting a build with your own plans a good way to estimate the cost is to engage a Quantity Surveyor to price your project. Group home builders will generally be cheaper for one of their standard plans; however, these can be restrictive in the options you can choose. Designing with an architectural draughtsman will usually give you what you ask for, and an architect will give you a lot more, but you may find that what you want is more expensive than what you initially expected to pay. Check the reputation of the builder you choose and be wary of altering any contract with variations unless it is agreed to in writing and discuss

Managing in mud

Wet and muddy conditions are to be expected on farms at this time of year, and the Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding all pastoral livestock farmers to ensure animals are well cared for on crops and pasture, and seek advice if they need to. “We recognise that this time of year brings many challenges, and managing stocking densities, pasture, break feeding on crops and minimising soil damage are just some of these,” says MPI’s director of Animal Health and Welfare, veterinarian Dr Chris Rodwell. “Farmers must be vigilant to not compromise animal health and welfare during these challenging months of the year. New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare generally require livestock to have access to areas free of surface water and mud and appropriate protection from adverse weather.” Rest and lying time is important to the health and welfare of livestock, not just feed availability and body condition of animals. “Welfare issues may not be immediately obvious. Amongst a number of issues, prolonged time on mud can also cause distress and discomfort, bring on significant and painful animal

health issues such as lameness and mastitis, and reduce production and resistance to disease.” MPI recognises that the use of winter crops as a source of good nutritional support to pasture and other feeds during winter is an important part of livestock feeding in New Zealand extensive farming systems. However, there is a point where animals are adversely impacted by muddy paddocks, and MPI continues to receive complaints. Dr Chris Rodwell, MPI’s director of “We urge farmers Animal Health and Welfare, veterinarian to seek expert advice and follow good practice to avoid Spring is stressful for people and problems. There is some really good animals alike — don’t add to your stress advice available from vets and your with animal health issues caused by sector groups. mud,” Dr Rodwell says.

Fonterra has joined with one of India’s largest consumer companies, Future Consumer Ltd, to help meet the growing demand for high-quality dairy nutrition in India. “The partnership, under the name Fonterra Future Dairy Partners, will enable Fonterra to establish a presence in India,” said Fonterra’s chief operating officer Global Consumer and Foodservice, Lukas Paravicini. “It will allow us to prepare the groundwork and make the most of our expertise as we enter the world’s largest and fastest growing dairy industry. Consumer demand for dairy in India over the next seven years is set to increase by 82 billion litres — seven times the forecasted growth for China. “The partnership will be driven by growth through profitability. The initial stages of the partnership will focus on product development and marketing with the right capital investment made during this period. The first consumer products will be launched by the middle of 2019, using both locally sourced milk and dairy products from New Zealand. “We will also use this time to settle in the partnership infrastructure, learn the market and prioritise geographies.” Fonterra MD Sri Lanka and Indian subcontinent, Sunil Sethi, said that India was also witnessing the emergence of new FMCG organisations like Future Consumer, which has a deep understanding of the Indian consumer,
