The Hawke’s Bay A&P Show in Hastings is the usual venue for the royal show. However, due to Covid-19, it was decided to cancel the royal sections held there this year. On hearing the news of this cancellation, the Stratford A&P Association committee decided to apply to the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) to host the 2020 New Zealand Royal Dairy Show. Although the royal sections are normally held at larger centres, exceptions were made this year to allow these to be separated and hosted at smaller shows. With the rights secured to host this year’s New Zealand Royal Dairy Show, the Stratford A&P Association is now putting on the polishing touches in the lead-up to the event. The royal event status has also been given to this year’s beef and pigs section at the Stratford A&P Show. Stratford A&P Association vicepresident Kylee Perrett said close to 300 top-performing dairy cattle from all across New Zealand are expected to arrive on the grounds to compete in the event. “Around 50% of entries will be from outside of Taranaki, and we could see

competitors from as far as the South Island attend,” she said. The Stratford A&P Show generally attracts up to 250 cattle. However last year, due to M bovis, numbers were down. Additional work by committee members is underway to secure further sponsorship to cover the extra costs. More marquees and sawdust will also be required to cater for the increase in cattle numbers. The influx of exhibitors, not only means an increase in crowd numbers through the gates but will also indicate more money spent locally. “For Stratford, it will bring many people to the region, including members of the RAS that will attend,” said Mrs Perrett. “For the competitors, it will be quite prestigious to win a royal dairy title as this is the highest award they can win.” The Stratford A&P Show has a history that covers more than 100 years, drawing crowds of thousands through the gates. This year’s show is set to run from November 27–29 2020 with equestrian events only held on the first day.

Long-serving land adviser retires

Land management adviser Kevin Rooke has retired after 45 years working for Horizons Regional Council. Kevin was raised on a dairy farm near Hamilton, attending Hamilton Technical College followed by work as a farm cadet. During his first year studying towards a Diploma in Agriculture at Lincoln College, Kevin won the New Zealand Farm Cadet of the Year (1973) and spent a year in Great Britain on a scholarship. With inflation running rife by the time he finished his second year at Lincoln, he started work as a soil conservator with the Rangitikei Wanganui Catchment Board in Marton. Initially, Kevin looked after the Turakina Valley heading over towards Whanganui. Local government reorganisation took place in 1989 with the catchment boards, pest boards and other organisations merged into regional councils. “We had a name change to the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council, now known as Horizons Regional Council. My area moved down to include the Pohangina/Oroua areas, although I was still based out of Marton,” said Kevin. After the 2004 storm, which wreaked havoc across the lower North Island, Horizons Regional Council’s Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI) was introduced.

“The old farm plans were all about soil erosion. SLUI ones are about potential erosion, water quality, biodiversity, farm and land management; the whole spectrum, and that came out of the ’04 storm.” In 2008, Kevin moved to the Woodville office to cover the Tararua area as well as the Pohangina Valley and Oroua. “There were no computers when I started. Now, I’ve got a computer on my desk, an iPad in my ute and a cellphone. When I started, we spent a couple of hours each night on the phone working through the toll operator to ring up farmers. There was no such thing as sending them an email or phoning them while they were out on the farm. “Then we went out to do the fieldwork for a farm plan, wrote the farm plan up and drafted the maps, tracing the lines of the paddocks and boundaries from the aerial photos. We’d put suggested works programmes, soil types, land-use capability, all kinds of things like that. We did the whole lot on big hunks of perma-trace. Now it’s done by computers with a few clicks.” Kevin said he’d had favourite farmers to work with during the years and will miss them.

aggie and her husband, Howard, immigrated to New Zealand from the United Kingdom in 2012, searching for a better life where they could own land and become self-sufficient. This move was made possible due to their friend, Bob, leaving them a gift in his will two years earlier. “Bob was a hugely kind and generous man who left his quite considerable estate, not only to his family, but also to a large group of his friends,” said Maggie. “At that time, my husband’s brother lived here and had always said we should come and see what a beautiful

country it is. We came for six months and then went back to the UK. Three months later, we came back and have been here ever since.” After settling on a three-hectare property in Kimbolton, Maggie completed a one-year evening course in organic horticulture. An interest in permaculture stemmed from this course, and she looked further into incorporating this into their property design and daily life. “We grow our own fruit, nuts and vegetables using organic principles and try to be as sustainable as possible.” Mixed breed, coloured sheep are kept for meat and wool and have come in handy to fertilise the orchard.

Two years ago, Maggie decided to experiment with her sheep’s wool, which had been piling up in the shed after shearing. She had earlier completed a felting day course and made a nuno felted scarf. “After seeing some fibre pieces by Scottish fibre artist Moy Mackay, I bought her book and made my first fibre piece to send to my mother for her birthday. I loved the tactile nature of the medium. “After making my first piece, I researched different styles of fibre work using the Internet. I have always walked my own path and never liked being the same as everyone else, so I wanted to see what other fibre artists were doing, and my style evolved from there. “After figuring out the basic techniques, I started to experiment with different embellishments, incorporating silk and other fibres and stitch work into my art pieces. I don’t use man-made fibres, only organic materials.” Although Maggie’s artwork uses felting techniques, she doesn’t consider herself a felter. “I am an artist who uses felt as a medium. I paint with fibre.” She spends quite a bit of time researching each piece before starting, often doing some sample pieces. That helps to decide on the colours and texture for the piece. The fibre is laid out, and wet felting techniques are used to form some of the design and the canvas background. Maggie then needles and stitches the detail to complete the piece. She usually has a few pieces on the go at any given time. “All my works are expertly hand-sewn on to an acid-free backing board and box-framed using UV resistant, nonreflective glass to enhance the works. My artwork is food for my soul.” Maggie said her pieces are sometimes inspired by the countryside but also

Putting the fine touches on her fibre art come from her imagination. She uses a sketchbook and photographs too. “One of my first pieces was of five sheep and titled Five bags full. “It was inspired by the saleyards in Feilding. “I get my inspiration from what is around me. I’m lucky where I live, in as much as I only have to look out of my window for inspiration. “My ‘paddock to picture’ works are inspired by the New Zealand landscapes and birdlife, and made using my own washed and carded sheep’s wool.” Maggie’s art is currently for sale in the Square Shop at the Square Edge Community Arts Centre, and her work can be viewed in an online exhibition at communityarts.org.nz/maggie-duff. In September, Maggie is exhibiting her artwork through the Square Edge Community Arts at the Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North. Her

Facebook page, Maggie Duff Fibre Artist, is updated regularly and she is also involved in the Manawatu Art Trail in November. “Bob’s gift has enabled me to connect with the natural world and with myself and really think about what makes me happy. My home, my husband, my animals and my creativity are what make me happy. Bob would be happy about that and I think he would love my artwork. “My art helps give my life purpose and connects me to the place I now call home,” she said.

he 28-year-old has now been employed in the dairy industry for close to a decade, working his way up from an entry-level farm assistant position to assistant manager. Shane’s work efforts, skills and knowledge were recognised this year when he placed second in the dairy manager category at the Manawatu Dairy Industry Awards. He also won two

merit awards. Eight years ago he won the trainee of the year section. Initially, Shane didn’t see dairying as a career option. “At high school, it wasn’t pushed as an option. I knew I wanted to work outdoors and to one day, be a business owner.” The building industry ticked those boxes, so on leaving school, Shane headed in that direction. As a few of

his friends were dairy farming, Shane spent time with them on-farm and gave consideration to working in the dairy industry. When a farm assistant position came up, he decided to apply. “I got the job and worked there for four years, becoming 2IC after two,” he said. In 2018, Shane took up a farm manager position on Matthew Collis’s

250ha Kairanga dairy farm, milking 630 cows at peak. Fifty hectares of the property is used for silage and young stock. A turnip crop is grown during summer, and the farm buys in additional grass and maize silage. “We grow grass through the winter, around 15kg a day. “The farm has herd homes and a woodchip calving barn, so we have the

We have people who want to be a worker and believe in what we are trying to achieve on-farm. What is great about the dairy industry is there is so much information and advice out there that is free to access. There are always other farmers in the same boat as you. The

likes of DairyNZ and discussion groups, but even cold-calling a farmer who you believe is a good operator in a certain area. Most likely, they will be prepared to share how they are successful.” Shane said study is very important to him and he has continued to study through Primary ITO, completing business planning and marketing modules. Currently, Shane is working through environment management units. “After completion of the diploma, I would like to complete something at Massey University. Hopefully, after this diploma, I will know what I would like to study further.” Entering the awards has given Shane the opportunity to receive feedback on

his industry progression plan. He enjoys the ongoing challenges that come with farming and the chance to be a business owner. “I like the intensity and constant improvement that comes with farming, whether that be production, environment or staff. “I like the challenges that are faced day-to-day and season-to-season. Most of all, I like the openness and information sharing with hard work.” Shane also appreciates the lifestyle dairying provides his family; fiancé Emma and two daughters, Paige,

Fighting for

RURAL KIWIS by Ann van Engelen

Mark Cameron farms at Ruawai in Kaipara, and he is a passionate advocate for New Zealand’s rural industries, which he says may improve because of the recent pandemic.

“A

round 1988, as a young adult, I secured my first farm job here in Ruawai and now own two dairy farms in the area. My wife Jodie and I have a blended family of four children, and our business is milking cows and living the country dream,” says Mark. The couple farm predominantly Friesian cattle and a few mixed breeds on their 285 acre property. “We are a grade two farm with grass silage, and a bit of kernel. We don’t grow maize due to the land size. We work as efficiently as possible and operate close to budget.”

Last year, Mark instigated the Farmer Pride rallies to rural small towns across the country. “I saw the egregious nature of what was happening to provincial New Zealand and was saddened by the lack of desire and self-belief of farmers. I saw first-hand for nearly a decade the nature of the constant government bureaucracy getting in the way of everyday kiwis in rural New Zealand. “As an advocate for the families and the small rural businesses that support them, I wanted to bring to light the plight of farmers to the government. We wanted to bring attention to the

The Farmer Pride rallies were started as a way to support rural New Zealand sell their farms with small businesses being affected. “People arrived in Dargaville and Ruawai on their tractors as symbology because every day, of every month, of every year we are on them. Tractors help bring food to New Zealand and the world. We are the best in the world at that, and I wanted to show the greater audience that we would always be here to feed them. “We had great progress and gained momentum but were saddened by the apathy farmers have a lot of, as they are so often browbeaten. “They have a lot of stuff in their lives. It would have been great for the rally to gather more traction. Now, in fact, what Covid-19 has done is brought the importance of farmers to the world as food producers. The world is now grateful and no longer looking through a macrobiotic lens at us. All through

the virus, we have continued to feed our nation and other nations, and now the pure illustration of that has come to light. “Now we are stabilised again as a part of national pride, and we are more than happy to be part of the society that gets the country going again. The general consensus in the wider public has been very positive. “The growers, including kumara, have carried on and were harvesting during the lockdown and have been as active as they have ever been. They made the necessary covid disease operational standards and did everything to carry on farming as we know we have a nation to feed. “The crops have to come out, cows need to be milked, and beef and cattle farmers continue to do what they do well. I will live here forever, if I am fit and able. I have kidney disease and

AUGUST 2020

Mark believes farmers across the country can be proud of producing quality food for the world was told I had 18 months to live and have managed to stay away from that since. I eat healthy and sleep as much as I need. “Everyone has their stuff, and this is ours. I certainly didn’t want this, but it happened — I haven’t allowed it to chase away my dream. Like most farmers, I found a way to manage and carry on. “New Zealand for me is the best country on earth and us farmers can celebrate being a big part of that and I charge my glass to anyone else that does it.”

Should I take Co Enzyme Q10?

We generally make all the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) we need. Some, however, should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzymes that make cholesterol. That is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can significantly reduce circulating CoQ10. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a month on highgrade CoQ10 (CoQsol) the pain had completely gone and is now able to tolerate the medication without side effects. I generally find it takes one to two months to restore muscle function and energy. Muscle issues from statin use are one of the most common reasons for muscle and tendon pain and weakness. It is a shame that many suffer needlessly as in most cases, are quickly resolved with a highquality CoQ10 without having to stop the medication. What makes CoQ10 unique is its ability to accept and donate electrons. That enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make the energy your body requires. Inadequate

Early prostate testing is a priority for rural men just as it is for those in urban areas because this deadly cancer often has no symptoms, and the PSA blood test is the crucial first indicator. In his role as medical adviser to PCFNZ, urologist Jim Duthie aims to reduce the number of men suffering from prostate cancer by expanding good testing throughout the country and encouraging early checks. “Guys don’t see enough doctors,” Jim says bluntly. “So, when they do, it’s important they make the most of that appointment.” Tackling a cancer that kills more than 600 Kiwi men each year is no small feat. According to Health Navigator NZ, men who live in rural areas are at

CoQ10 levels reduce energy output, and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness. I regularly prescribe CoQ10 for those with health issues known to reduce energy, especially those with autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. While CoQ10 is not a cure, it can help to lift general energy and well-being. In most cases, I will add CoQ10 as the patented CoQsol or my specialised MTQ10 formula for those needing extra CoQ10 plus a lift in energy. MTQ10 combines CoQ10 with a B complex plus other energy co-factors. Most people feel a real difference within one to two months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Build a bee-friendly garden

by Andy Bryenton

Nature’s pollinators, hard-working little honey makers, and a welcome sight to any keen gardener; Apis mellifera, the common domesticated bee, needs our help after centuries of giving to humanity by way of making our crops and orchards grow. If you want to pitch in, it’s easy to turn your garden into a haven for the black and yellow insects that support all horticulture. The first trick is to see like a bee. With their compound eyes tuned in to different frequencies from ours, bees love the colours blue and yellow, favouring flowers with these tones. They also like to spend time foraging in a single area. So mass planting of nectar-rich, old fashioned and heirloom varieties of flowering plants can provide a great feeding area for bees. Bees need water. It’s important to have a drinking source for them, especially during hot summer days when these flying insects can cover vast distances at the speedy clip of up to 24 kilometres an hour. That makes for thirsty work, and therefore a few shallow saucers of water, topped up regularly, can make all the difference. Those with ornamental ponds should consider placing rocks

within, to give bees a drinking point, or planting floating ornamental cultivars to fulfil a similar niche. A functional and beautiful herb garden is also a bee magnet, and can, of course, benefit your kitchen as well as the welfare of our insect allies. Rosemary is a heavy hitter in this regard as it can grow to hedge-sized proportions, but herbs like thyme, borage and sage are also favourites. Of course, lavender is a contender for most bee-friendly flowering plant, and it also brings scent and colour to your garden. Where bees really get to work is among orchard trees, so if you like your apples, pears, cherries, peaches, plums and citrus, you’ll be entering into a mutually beneficial partnership with the queen and her workers. No matter what you plant, the best way to encourage bees is to cut back on harsh chemical sprays and go organic. Bees are part of the natural cycle in the garden, which is often disrupted

It’s easy to make your garden appeal to bees, giving them a haven away from low-nectar hybrid cultivars, chemicals and sprays

in harmful ways by chemicals that don’t discriminate. By providing choices, and a spectrum of flowering plants spanning spring through autumn, you’ll give bees the

best chance to thrive. In return they’ll ensure healthy pollination for your crops, fruits and flowers, continuing a symbiosis that has lasted for millions of years.

Building consents simplified

by Andy Bryenton

May this year saw the proposal of radical changes for building consents, opening up more scope for easier construction without ‘red tape’. The big winners alongside landowners looking to upgrade were Licensed Building Practitioners. They can now proceed with many kinds of mid-scale work with added costs and paperwork swept away. The changes take effect this month. “Single-storey detached buildings up to 30 square metres (such as sleepouts, sheds and greenhouses, carports, awnings and water storage bladders) will now not require a council-approved building consent,” said Jenny Salesa, the government’s Building and Construction Minister in May. “Some of the new exemptions will utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners scheme, which recognises the competence of these building practitioners and allows them to join chartered professional engineers and certifying plumbers in having their own suite of exemptions.” The new exemptions will save building owners time and money, by not having to access their local council for consent for what is classified as low-risk building

work. Cutting back building consents is also intended to allow council to pay closer attention to larger, more complex building projects with deeper environmental ramifications. What does this mean for you, the home or farm owner? Single storey detached buildings exempt from building consent increase in size from 10 square metres to 20 square meters, incorporating sleepouts, garages, greenhouses, sheds and carports. However, a Licensed Building Practitioner will have to supervise the construction unless the building is an approved kitset, or made of only ‘lightweight building materials’. Exemptions also exist for ground-based solar arrays, flexible water storage systems for farms, porches and decks on the ground floor, awnings, and outdoor fireplaces and ovens. Any plumbing or electrical work must still,

of course, be completed by a qualified professional. In most of these cases, consent is exempted most easily by retaining the services of a qualified builder of good repute. Those who thought they could not afford to build, or that the process was too complex are now free to launch their projects and improve the value of their properties.

Top team at Tim McColl Contracting For the past 31 years, Tim McColl Contracting Ltd has serviced the lower North Island, carting and supplying metal, as well as undertaking a wide range of digger work. The business, which began with one digger and an employee, has grown to three trucks, three diggers, two crushers, two quarries and eight employees. Tim and Annette McColl initially ran the business from a yard at their home. Five years ago, after the company outgrew that space, the couple bought a larger yard in Simon Street, Feilding. The bulk of the business is made up of metal cartage and supply to other contractors, along with digger work for farm track maintenance, clearing slips, excavating dams and house sites. Annette said the crushers are mobile and can be transported from job to job. “At the moment, Tim is doing a lot of farm track and house site development in Wellington.” Tim McColl Contracting undertakes a great deal of river maintenance for Horizons, including tree planting and clearing water channels. Private stream work around the Manawatu is also carried out. “Some of our biggest jobs would have been after the 2004 floods where considerable damage was done to the

The business has a 1.5-tonne digger with rock breaker and auger, a concrete mixer, rotary hoe and compactor available to hire from the yard in Simon Street. In addition to providing a base for the businesses vehicles and equipment, the yard provides an area

Spring is time to feed the soil After struggling to get big fertiliser trucks onto his property, Bert Jordan decided to set up his own system of fertiliser spreading, setting up his John Deere Gator with a 300-litre tank and spreading rose system to allow greater coverage. He researched his options and settled on MicroLime and Nitrosol Liquid Fertiliser. Nitrosol has a full range of plant available-nutrients, minerals and trace elements that will feed and nurture plants through both foliage and roots. The organic content contributes to the development of soil biology leading to better nutrient uptake by plants, raising

brix levels and increasing dry matter. He was so impressed with the results of this natural fertiliser that he wanted to share this option with others. “Often the big trucks can’t get access to the smaller areas, or the size of the truck can cause damage to pasture,” Bert explains. He notes that the Gator has a low impact on the pasture and is

RURAL CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS Bridging the technology gap 100

by Andy Bryenton

Hydraulic excavators are the driving force behind most modern construction, with their action that mimics that movement of a human arm substituting pistons and hoses for muscles. The father of this technology was inspired by watching a water wheel while on a fishing trip in the 1840s. Sir William Armstrong noted that the wheel wasted much of the power of the river he was standing in, and wondered if a system of pipes would help channel the flow. That led him to look at the works of earlier experimenters, like Da Vinci and the ancient Greeks and Romans, who had developed musical instruments powered by water pressure. Fellow Englishman Joseph Bramah had invented the hydraulic press two almost half a century earlier. Still, Armstrong became convinced that the future of hydraulics wasn’t in pushing down, but in lifting things up. He developed a system for the port of Newcastle, where the city’s new piped water system had its massive back pressure tapped to power cranes to unload ships. These were so much more efficient than the steam cranes they replaced that Armstrong began to explore other ways to build on his hydraulic business. While he also used his knowledge of pressure in pipes to create more efficient army and navy guns, Armstrong developed the first hydraulic excavator in the 1880s, using it to excavate the docks at Hull. It was an ungainly steam-powered monster, but

it chewed through dirt and rock, like nothing before. Ultimately the design was improved by the Kilgore company, who did away with Armstrong’s extra chains and gears, developing the ‘opposing piston’ hydraulic set up we see today. Kilgore may have beaten him to the punch there. Still, Armstrong’s hydraulic works reached their pinnacle in 1894, when the company he’d helped found deployed gigantic new hydraulic accumulators, steam-powered pumps and giant pistons to build London’s Tower Bridge, perhaps the city’s most famous landmark. Downsizing those accumulators, replacing water and other fluids with modern hydraulic fluids and switching diesel power for steam led to the miniaturisation and versatility of the excavator, which reached its modern form in the rebuild after the second world war. It’s thought that the first mini excavator, of the kind used on construction sites worldwide, was the Japanese Yanmar YNB300.

Rural Contractors

Space pressures and the need to work amid tight confines as Japan rebuilt its industrial base after the war led to the construction of a machine with a small footprint, a swing boom and the ability to be moved on the back of a small truck. Today, hydraulic excavators are everywhere, but it all began with one man standing waist-deep in a British river, wondering how to make a better water mill.

Getting the best crop Crop production forecasts for 2020–21 are largely positive and good yields will play a large part in primary industry playing a saviour role in the New Zealand post-Covid economy. Good grain production is vital to the food supply and yields have steadily increased over time due to better corn hybrids and planting practices. Technologies allow better soil, understanding and what nutrients will improve production — in short, science and technology have positively affected New Zealand’s production results. Crop yields not only determine farming success, but they contribute significantly to what’s in the bank at the end of the season. There are a number of factors to consider in increasing productivity for maize crops, covering soil quality, seeds, and planting practices to determine the overall strength of the final product. Using strong hybrid seed with the strength to sustain conditions and then choosing the right one to sow is often the most important part of planting. Planting early can result in increased yields by taking advantage of unexpectedly early favourable soil conditions. It is not just enough to plant your seeds and hope for the best, you should always be sure to understand

your field’s growth potential. Crop producers typically have an estimated idea of the yield potential of their seeds. Understanding this will help manage not only your expectations but indicate whether or not your yield potential is matching your actual production. Rainfall is pretty much the norm in crop growing in New Zealand conditions so there is always a major factor in the lap of the growing gods. Fertilisers are an obviously important part of maintaining optimal soil conditions and adding at seeding can give a boost to growth helping provide

the seeds with essential nutrients like potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The root-zone at the base of your crops is the most important area to facilitate growth so your corn can thrive and produce an impressive yield. Soil testing should be on your to-do list right from the beginning. Examining the phosphorus, potassium and fertilisation levels will give you insight into how to handle your crops. It will also let you know when proper soil conditions are forming, such as the optimal density and right amount of nutrients, so you are ready to start planting.

Give a small, hydraulically enhanced machine the steering system of a battle tank, and it can turn literally in its own footprint. Kubota is no stranger to improving small-format working machines, from diggers to tractors. So the move into the skid steer market was a natural one for the big orange brand. Their SSV series comes in two power levels, with the more potent SSV75 packing a little more punch to deal with arduous Kiwi conditions. It’s got a whole arsenal of heads and attachments to snap onto those hydraulic arms, making it a versatile little module for busy farmers seeking a mate for their big tractor. Kubota has armed their flagship skid steer with a 64hp engine they’re calling the best in its class, in terms of performance and reliability. The engine’s common rail system electronically controls the timing and amount of fuel that is injected in stages, ensuring optimal combustion for greater gas efficiency, better fuel economy and less engine noise. Emissions have also been tackled, with the SSV series meeting Tier 4 requirements, largely thanks to the adoption of advanced exhaust gas recirculation tech downstream of its cylinders. Diesel particles are trapped

Kubota’s SSV skid steers are perfect for shifting heavy loads in tight spaces — a real bonus on the farm or the building site

in the muffler and automatically burned away in a controlled fashion to keep the little skid steer breathing easy. Clever thinking doesn’t stop at the engine bay. There’s more on offer for the operator to ensure a comfortable and easy day behind the controls. A neat self-levelling function keeps the bucket or forks in a horizontal position without having to manually

adjust the angle when lifting the arm. Additionally, there’s plenty of reach, with more than eight metres of stretch available, and a set up designed for easy dumping of the standard skid-steer trapezoidal bucket into truck beds. It’s an all-round performer with lots of scope for customisation, to tackle a host of farming tasks.

Kick-off begins with the Turbos against Otago at the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North on Sunday, September 20. The Turbos will then face Canterbury on Friday, October 9, followed by the Bay of Plenty on Saturday, October 17. Manfeild in Feilding has been secured as the venue for the final two home games during the championship, with the second game coinciding with the Manawatu A&P Show. Both games will go ahead on November 1 and 8, with the Turbos taking on Southland and Taranaki respectively. The Palmerston North City Council and Manawatu District Council are both getting behind the Turbos. “It is pretty special to have both our major councils backing our Turbos and Cyclones in 2020,” said Manawatu Rugby Union chief executive, Shannon Paku. “It is a great showing of unity in our region.”

The 2020 Mitre 10 Cup competition was initially set to begin on August 6, but Covid-19 created uncertainty and delays. “With the season starting a month later than usual, it provided some unique challenges, but it has also created some pretty exciting opportunities,” said Mr Paku. “Palmerston North City Council and their venues team did a great job working with us on potential opportunities to accommodate our games after the speedway season got

underway. However, logistically, it made sense for the Manawatu Rugby Union to move games that were held after the start of the speedway season. “The Manawatu District Council and Manfeild were proactive throughout the process.” Lawrence Satherley of the Manawatu A&P Show said the committee is incredibly excited to be joining up with Manawatu Rugby Union to host the Turbos at their annual show. The Manawatu A&P Show will be held from November 7–8 at Manfield.

Farmer’s book connects town and country A recently released book, This Farming Life, written by awardwinning local author Tim Saunders, conveys a sense of connectedness through food. Five generations of the Saunders family have farmed Ongarua Farm at Glen Oroua, near Palmerston North. Tim’s great-great-grandfather, WJ Saunders, bought the farm in 1906. The farm was passed down the generations then split between two brothers, Brian and Graeme, in 1977. Tim and his brother Mark have now taken over their father Brian’s block. The sheep and beef farm covers 390ha of flat land bordering the Oroua River. Tim’s interest in writing began when his nana, Edna Saunders, read to him as a child. His love of reading led to a desire to write, with Tim receiving encouragement from his grandfather, Dudley Morris, who also enjoyed putting pen to paper. Following Tim’s first major success winning the 2018 Mindfood Magazine Short Story competition, one of the judges approached him to write a book about his farming life. Tim said the judge, Jenny Hellen, believed there was a real gap in

the market for a well-written book about farming. “I wanted to convey a sense of connectedness — we are all connected through food,” said Tim. “I produce food that will eventually feed people I have never met. That can be a powerful and motivating thought that can sometimes lead to a fair amount of inner conflict. Farmers give life, and we also take it away, all in the name of food production. That is a huge responsibility. Massive amounts of food are wasted worldwide, and I think part of that problem comes from being disconnected to where food comes from. “The book covers a year in my life on the farm, incorporating the highs and lows. Farming can be full of joyful moments, but can also be crushingly harsh. “The book covers everything from shearing to lambing to drenching to slaughter. It describes how farming life changes through the seasons, and some of the processes that affect people who produce food.”

Local author and farmer, Tim Saunders, writes six mornings a week before heading out on the farm

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: August

OUR PEOPLE IN FORESTRY – Juken New Zealand Ltd JNL was formed in 1990 and their total owned and leased land make up 39, 806ha in Gisborne and the Wairarapa. Of this 80% is plantation forestry with the balance in non-commercial indigenous species held as reserves and/or covenant areas. They have a strong commitment to environmental management in respect of land, manufacturing and sales. Approximately 70% of all JNL timber harvested in the Wairarapa goes to its sawmill in Masterton for the manufacture of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Laminated Lumber (LL), Plywood and Solid Clearwood.

JNL’s primary objective is the sustained yield management of the radiata forests for the production of clear-wood to be used in the manufacture of a wide range of products for the house and construction industry. Logs are supplied direct from their forests to their own sawmills and many of the houses currently built in the Wairarapa use J-Frame sourced from the sawmill right here in Masterton. This is an excellent example of the simplicity of “Wood Miles”. Timber that is grown here, milled here, and used here. We love that principle and the fact that all JNL forests are certified with sustainable forest accreditation and

are managed according to clearly defined Management Plans. In Masterton the forestry team of 7 is lead by Sean McBride, however across New Zealand JNL employs more than 900 people and they have invested over 700 million dollars back into their company and New Zealand. There are many example of JNL contributing back to their communities by supporting such causes as the Life Flight Partnership 2020, Habitat for Humanity, Te Pooti Marae and many others. Details can be found on www.jnl.co.nz

We are not that shallow

Rathkeale College Visits the Bush Students from Rathkeale College Agri Business class chose a fantastic day to visit two harvesting crews for a field trip. Scott Andrew and Byron Dewar from the JNL forestry team hosted the class for day in JNL owned forests to study two completely different types of machines and logging systems. Dawson and Havard Logging showcased a new tethered harvesting system where one machine is secured and controlled remotely by the operator working in another machine down the hill, an example of robotics working in forestry. This is a fully mechanized crew that also included a hauler, and multiple harvesting machines. The students were amazed to find that owner Gavin Wilson has invested 6 million dollars in

equipment operated by Harvard Logging in just this one crew. Currently there are at least 30 harvesting crews working across the Wairarapa. Nixin Contractors Ltd was the second site visit and showed how a traditional hauler set up works in conjunction with mechanized and manual felling. Pupils realized the complexities of felling timber in steep gullies and how to protect waterways while moving stems. Owner Nick Cusack entertained students with his passion for logging, and how much fun he has in his job, “Everyone gets a ute.” Students have definitely learnt a thing or two about how our industry operates in the Wairarapa. Question of the day, “How’s the hunting out here?

What is a “Shallow rooted pine tree”? There are many studies and data collected in the last 100 years of Pinus Radiata research in New Zealand to show that pines are anything but. Of course, roots of any trees are only as effective as soil depth and stability allows. No tree will achieve perfect hillside stabilisation if there is bedrock that the roots cannot penetrate or if great quantities of rainfall soak the soil and saturate it. The likelihood of landslides is dependent on age, density and maturity of trees, along with underlying soil structure, not only the species. Nothing in nature is perfect and usually it is the owners of a particular piece of land who know the true underlying characteristics that will affect any tree vertical root development such as stoniness, poor drainage, or poor growing media and can plan accordingly. Indigenous trees will get there as far as stablisation goes, but many years later than pine, leaving land exposed to erosion for longer, and with no cash crop at the end. The true benefits of trees for erosion control are when the forest achieves

canopy closure to withhold rainfall onto the ground, and the sooner the better. Pinus Radiata has been used extensively by Regional Councils and landowners due to their fast growing and rapidly spreading root systems that will also provide a valuable cash crop. Land stability, reduction in water pressures through the soil and canopy cover that reduces the ability of rainfall to cause shallow landslides are most effective once pine trees are over the age of 8. However, if seedlings are planted in previously harvested sites, the mechanical reinforcement retained by earlier mature forest remain for up to 3 years. At age 8, pines contribute significantly to soil stability up to 2.3m and continue to develop to a depth of up 3m by age 25. Most shallow landsides occur at a depth of 1.5m or less. By age 30 pines have developed into massive systems with horizontal roots spread reaching up to 10m. This interlocking relationship with the roots provides huge benefits for securing soils and filtering water. Crop planting density and forest management to achieve slope

Consider your land and design your planting with thought to access and harvesting carefully and pines will provide both the erosion control and the profits you need. Calving highlights farm job opportunities by Paul Campbell

In pre-Covid-19 farming seasons, overseas workers bolstered New Zealand’s rural workforce with the dairy industry, in particular, looking for staff as calving time put a strain on resources. While the industry offered good money opportunities for backpackers on working holidays as well as regular seasonal workers from abroad, that source of labour has now dried up with our border closure. The industry is now looking to Kiwis who are out of work, and already farm training programmes have sprung up around the country to retrain and attract locals seeking a career change after huge post-lockdown job losses. The dairy industry is a solid opportunity to earn good money. More than 95% of dairy products produced in New Zealand are shipped and marketed globally and the country accounts for some third of the world’s dairy supply, feeding over 100 million people annually. New Zealand farmers employ more than

7,000 entry-level employees each year. The calving season is the busiest time on any dairy farm with spring paramount to have calves out and healthy by summer as grass growth is flourishing. Dairy is an increasingly popular job to have for women, so don’t think just because you are a female prevents you from a job in this industry. Calving time also brings a major responsibility to the farm gate with the management and movement of calves needing to be easily identified and tracked for possible disease control and to this end, all newborn calves must be tagged within 180 days or before the first off-farm movement. Calves are required to be registered in NAIT within seven days of being tagged and failure to do so can invite trouble

from the Ministry for Primary Industries. While most farmers will be aware of the requirement, it also applies to PICAs, the acronym for people in charge of animals, many of whom may be new on lifestyle blocks with just a few animals. MPI says not complying with NAIT compromises biosecurity response and preparedness, food safety and effective

livestock traceability. The system was established to provide for the rapid and accurate tracking of animals from birth to death or live export and information on the current location and movement history of individuals or groups. The system also supports improved animal productivity, market assurances and trading requirements.

The duo invested in Allflex cow collars, in the hope they could improve their herd’s breeding performance. While it took some time for staff to adapt and fully trust the system, they now love it. “We did recognise that we had some reproductive issues on our farm,” said David. They were also looking at taking a step back from the daily farming duties, while still keeping informed and across the mating programme. Wendy says: “The collars offered the perfect solution.” They enjoy the luxury of “no tail paint, no scratches and no bulls.” Tightening their calving pattern creates a proper break before mating starts. Health-wise, the cattle are benefitting from staff being able to recognise when cows need to be moved from the colostrum herd to the main milking herd ensuring rumination levels are higher, and they feel less stress. Staff can also be proactive and treat cows up to 30 hours earlier than when they would have shown signs of distress resulting in less recovery time and therefore, more days in milk. Wendy spends time in Canterbury for her second job, but accesses information on the go. “I can be in Canterbury, and I just send David a list of matings that I want for
