As a major tributary of the Manawatu River, and one of the catchments, the Oroua River sits under the Manawatu River Leaders Accord. The Accord was signed by members of the Manawatu River Leaders’ Forum in August 2010 with plans to improve the state of the waterway. This year’s awards were based on improvements in phosphorus measurements in river water over a 10-year period. After 10 years in the making, Horizons Regional Council’s One Plan has been signed off by councillors at a recent meeting. The One Plan has been developed to manage natural resources throughout the Horizons region and guide resource management decision making. It is a combined second generation Regional Policy Statement and Regional Plan for the Horizons region, replacing six operative regional plans and the operative Regional Policy statement. Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon identified the significance of the decision. “It’s been a long journey with some tensions, challenges and learnings, and I am proud of what we have achieved. “I would like to acknowledge the input and views of the community that have helped Council develop the plan and its implementation, along with the staff and councillors who have been involved throughout this process,” he said. “Horizons will be monitoring the plan as it’s implemented and I am confident that together we have created a plan that will be applied fairly across our community.” Approval of the document allows the One Plan to become operative on December 19 this year. However, the Proposed One Plan was first notified in 2007 and has been a part of resource management decisions in a transitional phase since then. Federated Farmers Manawatu/Rangitikei chairman James
Stewart said signing off of the One Plan closes a chapter and gives farmers the security to keep farming. “Its implementation has been going for a little while now so farmers have been working through the processes for the past 18 months. “Some farmers will struggle a bit but we will just have to work together.” Fish & G a m e ’s environmental manager Corina Jordan said the One Plan is ground breaking. Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon signs the Horizons One “The decision by Horizons Plan on behalf of the council councillors to sign the One and environmentally sustainable while Plan is a historic moment, not only for maintaining water quality for New the region but for all New Zealand.” Zealand’s longer term future.” Ms Jordan said the plan will ensure The One Plan document will be resources are utilised efficiently, the made available on Horizons’ website life-supporting capacity of water and and members of the public can request ecosystems are maintained, and the a USB flash drive of the document. Jared and Rachel Hercoe always had a number of chickens, but after literally stumbling across a freerange egg business last year they decided to buy it.
T
he couple saw the business as an ideal opportunity to utilise their four hectare lifestyle property. As Rachel had left work at Fonterra after having the couple’s first child, the business would also help supplement Jared’s income as a lower order sharemilker.

Fencing began on the Linton property with 1.8 metre chicken wire set up to enclose the poultry. Irrigation was also installed to provide water to the coops. Three acres is set aside for the layers, and a separate half an acre area is used when young pullets are on the property. Rachel said trees were planted around the perimeter of the property to provide the hens with more shelter. “A single garage was lined and converted to a packing shed and two mobile coops came with the business.” The two coops consist of a laying area, then roll away into a collection area and perches for roosting. “These are on skids and get moved fortnightly to fresh grass.”
“Solar panels run the lights in the coops and a shade-sail helps give the chooks more shade during summer,” said Rachel. A mixture of 600 brown shavers and Hyline brown hens’ now free range on the Hercoe’s property. After rebranding the business name to The Freerangers, the couple began the process to become Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) certified, and gain resource consent from the local council. “Once we were certified, we then could sell to retailers,” said Rachel. Although Rachel and Jared tend to operate the bulk of the chores involved in the business, their families quite often help out. Jared’s father, John, sells
the eggs at the Feilding Farmers’ Market each Friday. Rachel said their young son, Keaton (3 ½ years) loves going down to the market to help. “And now we have our eight-week-old girl, Elliot, who will probably follow suit.” Hens are let out of their enclosures in the morning and fed. Eggs are collected late afternoon and the hens are fed again. “The eggs are taken back to the packing shed where they are cleaned and packed for different customers.” The couple have found that the egg production business is a supply and demand situation. “But we’ve found in the short time that we have owned it,

The Hercoe family that the summer months are the highest demand,” said Rachel. “The chickens also go through lay cycles causing supply problems throughout the year, especially during the winter with the reduced light hours. “So good planning is to get your pullets timed to start laying in autumn.” Day old chicks are brought in twice a year and raised. Sixteen-week-old pullets have also been purchased as required to try and help fill the demand. Chicks and pullets are bought from a local company. Hens are fed layer pellets which provide complete nutrition to accompany their free-ranging. Crushed maize is also given as a treat, and oyster grit is mixed in with the food. As well as selling eggs at the Feilding Farmers’ Market, the Hercoe’s supply mixed grade eggs to free-range butchery store Moreish, and cupcake cafe Petit Fours, both located in Palmerston North. Any excess eggs are sold at Palmerston North’s Albert Street market on Saturdays. “Although that ceased with the arrival of our second child, hopefully will be able to get back there in the next six weeks,” said Rachel. Rachel thoroughly enjoys meeting people at the markets and getting feedback. “It’s great to be able to supply people with genuine free-range eggs,” she said.

They are also determined to keep the business operating in an efficient and profitable manner. “Maybe increase our numbers slightly to give more people the opportunity to buy fresh free-range eggs,” said Rachel.

fter 12 months in the planning, the pair launched their Girls Go Country farmstay and adventure centre on Tarn’s 730ha farm earlier this year. Tarn has owned Taukoro farm for over five years. Located in the Paraparas — 30km from Wanganui, the farm is currently running 2000 stock units. The steepest slopes on the farm, a total of 180ha, have been planted in pines as part of Horizons Regional Council’s Whole Farm Plan agreement. Both women come from South Taranaki rural backgrounds and have plenty of farming experience and skills to share with others. Jewels also previously worked as a professional shearer, while Tarn learned to shear during a course at Flock House near Bulls.
As the pair often had friends who enjoyed visiting the farm to help out with some of the bigger chores, Tarn and Jewels decided to open the place up to the public, giving others similar opportunities. Activities are tailored to suit the requirements of visiting groups or individuals, and can include watching Tarn and Jewels working with horses, shearing, dog training, fencing, farm maintenance, and sheep care. “We just go about our jobs with the ladies watching, then they are doing a task such as hitting a nail and haven’t even realised they are giving it a whirl,” said Jewels. Tarn and Jewels enjoy involving people but there is no pressure for guests to take part in the activities. And although

Jewels Davey the venture caters mostly towards women, men aren’t excluded. “Because we are a group of women, women seem more relaxed and confident to have a go, whereas often they won’t if their man is there, said Jewels. “Then there’s the delight when they’ve done it.” A bunkhouse, bushman’s hut out the back of the farm, and campsites provide a range of accommodation. Tarn has set up the bunkhouse with grass pens for horses to stay directly outside. “Guests enjoy the fact that they can just lean over and touch them while having a coffee, or a wine,” she said. Much of the food is produced on the farm, and cooking together over an outdoor fire is a chance for Tarn, Jewels,
“There are no fun police out here, and the tables are built for dancing on.” and their guests to share stories, swap recipes, and develop friendships. Tarn and Jewels agree that Taukoro Farm is an ideal spot for ladies to let their hair down. “There are no fun police
out here, and the tables are built for dancing on.” A games afternoon for guests is currently one of many ideas in the pipeline. “A Kiwi girl challenge — a bit like Young Farmer of the Year or the old Top Town, but humorous,” said Tarn. An orienteering course on horseback is also planned. “Guests book the cottage for a night or two, bring their horses on the farm to work in harness and under saddle. Eventually guests will be able to learn basic skills in heavy horse care, harness and driving. Tarn also intends to put her previous experience working in a summer camp
in the United States to good use when school groups visit. “We think it’s important that children learn where food comes from and how to gather and cook food off the land,” said Tarn. “Kids love it, and it’s a great bonding time for families.” The pair aim to ensure their guests leave Taukoro Farm feeling relaxed, accepted and with a sense of achievement. “It’s extremely rewarding when you get to see somebody realise that they have just done something they have never done before, or thought they couldn’t.”

DAIRY
Focus on Effluent An independent warrant of fitness Getting a certified ‘WOF’ assessor can only be good practice, particularly when a farmer has upgraded his effluent systems but may may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. ‘Then you know what is needed to upgrade. For a sharemilker moving onto a farm being able to see a ‘WOF’ report means you know what kind of system you’re taking on’. There is no legislation or regulations around a dairy effluent ‘WOF’, it is a voluntary programme, sort of like a building inspection. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. For instance the assessor will insert a flow meter and pressure gauge into the mainline as that helps identify if there is a problem with the pump. They carry out a full irrigator inspection and test the application depth and average rate. They also calculate the amount of storage for the type of effluent management system on the farm. After the assessor has completed the work a report is prepared for the farm owner/manager. All the certified

‘WOF’ assessors have several years of experience. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on-farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WOF’ assessors. All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on. It’s just a matter of calling up your local Certified ‘WOF’ assessor and making a time for them to come out. They’ll make sure you are fully informed in terms of what information they need from you and what areas of the farm they need access to. Contact www. effluentaccreditation.co.nz.

design which helps to stir up the effluent in a quarter of the time it takes to stir up a rectangle pond. This design reduces the amount of solids build up and the full nutrient benefit from the effluent can get back onto paddocks. The Prosump is built tough from 150mm thick pre-cast concrete walls and features triple-sealed panel joints. Traditional pond failures such as corrosion, punctures or leaks are gone for good! A Prosump will just laugh at the odd knock from a stirrer blade or digger bucket and you can kiss goodbye to expensive liner repair bills! However, before spreading that valuable by-product of milk production back onto the land, there is money to be saved by ensuring effluent collection and holding sumps are designed right. Presco Group’s Farm Dairy Effluent consultants have found that farmers who have installed Prosumps, New Zealand’s leading concrete effluent holding sump, have experienced large cost reductions. The initial benefit of a vertical walled holding pond is in meeting regional council requirements. A lined, earthen pond needs sloping side walls which results in a much larger ‘footprint’. Presco has had some farmers in higher rainfall areas being able to reduce their storage capacity requirements by 20% by installing the Prosump. The second benefit of the Prosump design is not seen in the paddock. Lower pumping costs are achieved due to not pumping the extra rainwater captured. Reduced energy costs come from more efficient stirring. The Prosump is a circular sump with a special inverted cone floor

RURAL WHEELS
Taking it to the streets by Andy Bryenton
The versatile and hard-working Suzuki DR200 has been so popular with farmers over the years that it’s almost as much a part of the rural landscape as wire fences and bales of silage.
The tough little 199cc two-wheelers are everywhere, and there are plenty of farm workers who have gotten their first taste of motorcycling by taking the DR200 for a run down the races or through the paddocks. That’s strictly for work, though — most riders quickly progress to something with a bit more focussed design if they want to hit the motocross track or the trail. But how about if you want to go the other way — taking to the open road for some touring adventures this summer? Chances are, if you are familiar with the DR200, you might not enjoy the smoothest of two-lane blacktop to your door. A sports crossover bike like the big V-Strom is the perfect answer, but it’s a handful for learner riders. That’s where the Suzuki engineers have played it smart, adapting the DR200 itself as a go-anywhere, street legal 199cc learner-approved ride. With styling tweaks garnered from the RM-Z series of dirt bikes and a host of ergonomic adjustments to take the
rural, utilitarian look and feel off the edges, the DR200S is transformed from a farmhand’s working tool to a nimble and nicely proportioned dualsport adventurer. There may not seem to be a huge helping of horsepower lurking in that sub-200-cube mill, but it proves ample to flick what is only a 126 kilo bike around, especially when that bike has a feather-light clutch and smooth, longtravel suspension. Best of all, for anyone who has ever rounded up a herd or simply bashed through the paddocks on a farm bike, the DR200S feels familiar and inspires confidence. Suzuki have gone much further than just bolting indicators and a headlamp to their venerable DR200 ‘Trojan’ in order to create a cross-over adventure bike. A look beneath the surface reveals many small adjustments designed to increase comfort and rider enjoyment. If you’re serious about hitting the highway, this may be the right machine to bridge the gap.
Re-imagined, reinforced and ready to work
by Andy Bryenton
When it comes time to choosing a new ATV quad for the farm — and especially one to be put through a gruelling role of farming chores by farm staff daily — it’s not the bells and whistles which count.
It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix — it’s just that, dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy. Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. And they’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa, is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, low-priced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bangs for your buck. It’s a no-frills approach, focussed on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a reimagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four stroke providing 38 horsepower.
Even the frame has moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity. The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners. As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control. All of which should be no surprise — Can Am, like their rivals in both the USA and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive the cut and thrust of the ATV world. What is different, though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty. It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrest the rural utility quad crown from its contenders — one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for 2015.

Top honours for automotive excellence

This year’s AA and New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild car of the year awards have provided some surprises and some clear victors, as members voted for their pick of 2014’s top auto across a variety of categories. While it was the Mazda3 which took top honours this year, there has been cause for comment across some of those other classes too, with especial mention made of the Ford Ranger’s win in the best ute category, and the double win for Mercedes Benz, with their C Class taking out both best medium to large car and safest car. The Mazda3 impressed the judges with a combination of style, technology and function, joining the marque’s CX-5 in the winner’s circle as the ‘crossover’ took best small to medium SUV. AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says the Mazda3 has become a Kiwi favourite with a wide range of models to suit a broad range of motorists. “The Mazda3 is a very deserving winner and its place at the head of the top 10 finalists is likely providing little surprise to many,” Ms Stocks says. “With the Mazda3 we have an outstanding all-rounder with a wide model range and some great safety technology.” Ford’s Ranger ute has enjoyed a stellar run on the podium, with big awards in every year of its model life, including being named New Zealand Autocar Car of the Year in 2011. This year sees the Ranger once again take out best ute, a title it has held since 2012, and a clear challenge to other global car makers. This popularity has been borne out in numbers of Rangers on the road — Ford are on track to be New Zealand’s best selling ute this year.

Such is the prestige attached to winning Car of the Year that Mazda may very well expect similar performance from the Mazda3. Mercedes-Benz have elevated their C Class to new heights with the latest model, putting it deservedly in top spot for both safety and for the important medium to large car bracket. The German automakers also took out the wreath for best luxury car for their latest iteration of the S Class — a badge which has meant well-engineered quality for decades. The large SUV award went to Hyundai’s Santa Fe, while the best small car was awarded to the nimble little Honda Jazz. BMW’s M3 and M4 were jointly named sports car of the

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING
The real cost of lameness A few weeks ago, I had a discussion with a farmer about trimming cow’s feet. He was managing this farm and his contract stated that he was required to have a minimum number of staff members. Because of that he had plenty of labour power so one of the jobs that he got his staff to do was to trim the lame cows. That seems to make sense especially with the milk price the way it is — you want to save as much money as you can, right? Let’s think about that for a bit. If money is a bit tight and you have toothache, would you get one of your staff to sort it out for you? Or likewise, do some of you, who know how to inseminate a cow, take on this responsibility yourself this year to save money? For most farmers the answer will be no to both of these questions and I would assume that the reason for that, in most cases, will be because of the quality of the job done, and in the case of your tooth ache, it may have a pain factor as well.
Most people realise that the better your in-calf rate is, the better your bottom line profit will be. It pays to get an experienced AI technician to inseminate your cows, and so the same is true for trimming lame cows. It does pay to utilise the skills and experience of qualified hoof trimmers if you want to save time and money. I hear you saying, ‘how can I save money by paying someone to do a job that one of my staff can probably do just as well?’ I guess the answer to that will be largely influenced by your understanding and acceptance of the skill involved in proper hoof trimming, which will minimise the recovery time of your cows ensuring they return to full productivity quicker, but also with the very real difficulty in quantifying the cost of lameness. Do you know how much lameness costs you? Can you work it out? It’s not that easy is it? A lot of the cost of lameness comes from reduced productivity, and
that varies per cow. There are many factors at play like the time of the year when the cow is going lame, the severity of the lameness, etc. DairyNZ worked out that the average cost of a lame cow is around $500 and that on average 35% of your herd will be lame in a season. So a farm milking 1,000 cows could have a $175,000
lameness bill in a season. That is not so much a bill that is being paid out, but more so a cheque that is not coming in. We worked out that if the cost of a lame cow is $500 (and I think that is conservative) then the industry is missing out on nearly a billion dollars a year. In a season where you need to think particularly carefully of each financial decision you make, it is important to be aware of false economy and ensure you are utilising your staff where they are going to be most productive in using their individual skill sets. This is a subject that I will seek to address in my next article in a little more detail. “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

Christmas Greetings by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials
By the time you get to read this, the year of 2104 will almost be done. What a year, what a roller coaster ride for everybody, talk about ups and downs and round and rounds, from a strong milk solid payout and then it’s vertical plunge into the ground with a shower of sparks, a dizzy head a big gulp of oxygen and hey, it’s back to keeping the farm pumping and the New Zealand economy going. We wish all the New Zealand food and beverage producers a very merry Christmas and thank them all for the effort they make on a daily basis to keep our economy growing; with special wishes to our loyal customers and the band of new customers who have joined our ranks. More and more producers are asking for information about our multi-mineral rich fertilisers and about the natural track we have been on for the past twenty years, working with Mother Nature and all that natural capital she provides to make production possible.
There is strong talk from Australia about a move away from the chemical age in pursuit of better quality produce. Every dog has its day, as the revolution spins towards more natural methods and sustainable and eco-friendly production. Over the past 10 years I have recognised an increasing demand for food produced in a safe certified nutritiously dense manner as people all over the globe become more concerned about their health and what they are eating. Latest reports out of UK (one of New Zealand’s leading markets) say that 83%
of people there are eating some types of organic food. This new consumer call is ideally suited to New Zealand’s conditions of soil, climate, our innovation and our isolation. To produce food to qualify for this market is simple — it’s all about changing the soil, change the soil and you can change the quality of the food, it’s that straightforward. Agrissentials’ focus is directed at the soil; get the soil right and all life above the soil, plants, animals and people will be right. Agrissentials’ live living multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers are designed to bring health and vitality back to soils, our environment and most importantly our food. After 30 years down the natural path I firmly believe that the time is perfect for a change back to natural methods of food production. Todays’ chemical methods have tied us into commodity markets, where we are competing against other big commodity suppliers, as farmers throughout the planet are all struggling to make a decent living through this dominated system. Changing our production methods by working with nature, increasing the depth, microbial life and mineral content of the topsoil will in turn increase soil carbon, soil water retention and soil drainage capacity, resulting in increased production and better food quality. Such a move could take us away from the instability of commodity markets and into the lucrative markets of the worlds’ affluent consumers — something to think about this New Year. In the spirit of Christmas, Agrissentials have loads of amazing specials to get your soil pumping and things growing. Whether you’re a home gardener, lifestyle block owner, commercial grower or farmer — there’s a deal for you AND some limited edition Christmas packs that make a fantastic Christmas gift for that someone special. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) or your local best on earth fertiliser rep Ben Tippins (North Manawatu) 021 738 601 or Lyn Woodcock (South Manawatu/Wairarapa) 021 0204 3028 to redeem your special Christmas coupon today! (Please note that over the Christmas break the office will be closed from the 19th of December and fully operable again on the 5th of January.) Wishing you health, wealth, happiness and a prosperous 2015 — bring it on! From Team Agrissentials.

Supreme winners announced A South Canterbury-based environmental consultancy duo are the Supreme Winners of this year’s Enterprising Rural Women Awards. Keri Johnston and Haidee McCabe, principals of Irricon Resource Solutions, have gone from strength to strength since they established their business in 2010. The duo now employ nine staff, located from Motunau in North Canterbury to Duntroon in North Otago, with wide-ranging expertise. A key feature of Keri and Haidee’s business is their philosophy of fitting work around family and farming life. “Where we are today was born out of a desire to have professional careers but on our terms — working from home, around children and farming,” says natural resources engineer Keri, who owns a farm with her husband just out of Geraldine. Haidee, an environmental consultant from Albury, adds “Five of our consultants are women who would not be working professionally if they didn’t work for Irricon. Working from home means the best of all worlds for these women, and it allows them the opportunity to work, but be wives, mums and farm workers as well. “Unless we’re in a hearing, we’re not a ‘suit and tie’ type of business — our jeans and gumboots are well worn! clients really appreciate having someone turn up who knows farming. “Because of the expertise we have, we can handle almost any job from start to finish — design, consenting, implementation and compliance. We have over 500 clients, and this number is still growing.” The business focusses on improving or maintaining the sustainability of natural resources, such as land, water and waste, and is also involved in irrigation and catchment management. Irricon Resource Solutions also won the Help! I Need Somebody category, sponsored by Access Homehealth Ltd. Rural Women New Zealand national president, Wendy McGowan said, “We are keen to raise awareness of women’s entrepreneurship and their input into rural communities.” TEXENERGY
