Data in the report, published by DairyNZ and Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), shows there were 11,590 dairy herds from June 1 2017 to May 31 2018 — 158 fewer herds nationwide from the previous season. Although the average herd size increased by 17 cows to 431, this was the third year to see a decrease in herd numbers. The total cow population for 2017–18 was 4.99 million, an increase of 2.7% from the previous season but still below the peak population of more than 5.01 million cows in the 2014–15 season. Manawatu restaurants take out top awards

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES  December 2018

Six Manawatu restaurants have come out tops in the New Zealand Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards for 2019. The Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards, New Zealand’s longest running culinary awards, were established in 1997 to recognise the skill, expertise and talent of our greatest chefs. More than 230 restaurants throughout New Zealand went through the latest application process, followed by a tough and rigorous assessment. Independent, culinar y-trained assessors were sent out to ‘mystery shop’ the restaurants and return their findings. Restaurants were judged on their individual merits and style of cuisine, and whether dishes met the standard to earn the label as leader of beef and lamb. Four of the Manawatu restaurants chosen — Nero Restaurant, Table 188, The Fat Farmer, and Aberdeen on Broadway — are all located in Palmerston North. The other two selected restaurants were Amayjen The Restaurant in Feilding and The Barrelhouse in Dannevirke. Kiwi celebrity chef Peter Gordon has restaurants in London and New Zealand. He rates Kiwi chefs amongst the best in terms of cooking with beef and lamb. “I have eaten at restaurants around the world, and I’m hugely proud of the world-class beef and lamb we have here in New Zealand,” he said. “I put this down to two factors; we have access to these wonderful meats that are grass-fed and reared outdoors, giving them a delicious texture and flavour. “It also comes down to our chefs. They are talented, creative, dedicated,

Committed to forestry by Ann van Engelen The Horne family have been in the logging business since 1964 and are passionate about their commitment to excellence in industry training as they encourage workers into forestry as a career.

“E

veryone who works for us has to be certified for all the jobs they do, this is the non-negotiable bottom line for our company,” says operations manager, Amanda Horne. Amanda comes from a nursing background and now runs the family business alongside her husband, Bernard. “Bernard is the third generation of his family to run the business, and we look set to continue into the future, with our 21-year-old son Matt already a key member of the team, and our daughter Louise helps me part-time.

Bernard and Matt have logging in the blood. Logging is all Matt has ever wanted to do — from spending time in the forest with his grandfather as a toddler, he is now halfway through a two-year level six diploma in forest management at Toi Ohomai, formerly Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua. “Matt has been working in the forest since leaving school and plans to gradually move into a management role at Horne Logging. “He is already bringing new management skills into the business,” says Bernard.

“We are both totally comfortable in the heart of a harvesting landscape. My biggest satisfaction comes from getting the job done and making sure the crews are happy and safe. We operate two logging crews with approximately 17 staff.” The company’s commitment to training has led to multiple awards, including being named ‘Training Contractor of the Year’ for the Southern North Island in 2017 and 2018. “One of our team members Dan Kyle was also awarded Trainee of the Year in 2018, and we recently achieved ‘certified contractor’ status. This confirms high standards of environmental management and health and safety in all of our operations,” says Amanda. “I call our crew members ‘the lads’, and they are really an extension of our family. We do have the good ones and the naughty ones of course, but we aim to be as supportive as possible to all our staff.” This attitude runs to early finishes on every second Friday so staff can return to town to tend to any personal matters they may have. The company also provide a staff lunch and health and safety meeting at least once a month at their base in Masterton. “Our philosophy is basically to treat people the way we would like to be treated ourselves,” says Amanda. “One of my underlying values is that having an education leads to more choices. We want to encourage people to grow in their jobs. All of our guys are trained to be multiskilled and can take on a number of jobs in the forest, but

The family have two logging crews and are committed to ensuring that their staff are well trained for the job

we also encourage them to refresh their training and upskill.” Training is ongoing, and programmes are organised with the help of Russell Riley, the regional Competenz forestry manager, and NZQA assessor John Reid. “Dan Kyle has now also qualified as an assessor, so comes in very useful as part of our training team. In addition, we now employ one of our crew members Justin Carswell in a full-time health and safety role,” says Amanda. “It does annoy me that forestry workers lack recognition for their high skill levels. People can be quite dismissive of forestry as a career, but there are lots of opportunities and all of them involve different skills.” Amanda says that all the effort put into staff management and training doesn’t mean that Horne Logging is

immune from the challenges of finding and retaining good staff. “It is one of our biggest day-today headaches, staff shortages are widespread throughout the forest industry,” says Bernard. We would really love to see more women in the industry, including out in the forest, there are plenty of jobs women can do. They see things with a different set of eyes and having even one woman in a crew could make a huge

difference to crew culture. We think the industry needs a bit of a shake-up, and to become more flexible in its approach to employing women.” The family have a long list of the blocks to be logged over the next few years in the eastern Wairarapa. “There will be no shortage of work for Horne Logging, and as a family our goal is to continue our commitment to training excellence wherever we are working.”

perfect Galloway by Denise Gunn

After a lifetime career in dairy farming, shepherding and farm management, Bill and Carolyn Dawson made the move to a 15ha lifestyle block near Foxton in 1986. They purchased four Belted Galloways, from a Wanganui breeder, as a foundation for their herd in 1992.

T

he bull and the three heifers were purchased as commercial stock. It meant they were purebred but unregistered with the breed society, Galloway New Zealand. However, the bull turned out to be unsuitable, so the couple bought a registered purebred Galloway bull from a stud in Canterbury in 1996. Eight years ago, the decision to change from a commercial herd to a registered Belted Galloway stud was made. The Dawson’s cattle have since been registered under the stud name; Ti Rakau Flats Belted Galloways. “Our first cow was called Angel, and she came up from Canterbury. Our second was a two-year-old heifer from Linton, called Willow,” said Carolyn.

“We also purchased Bella and Britney, weaners from Masterton. The addition of a heifer bred by the couple was the start of their herd. Carolyn said they now always have registered bulls on their property. “You can’t trust that a purebred bull, that is not registered, has not got other cattle breeds in their breeding,” said Carolyn. A second registered bull was bought from Taupo and later sold on to a Taranaki breeder. Another bull was purchased from a stud in Waikanae. Carolyn said he was an impressive looking bull. “He was a red belted bull, and so far has thrown a couple of red animals.

Carolyn Dawson, and her husband Bill, bought the foundation stock for their Belted Galloway herd in 1992

We are proud of our pots. Our suppliers fire their pots for longer and at a higher temperature to ensure they survive the European winters. That means they are perfect for NZ conditions and will last a lifetime. Cheaper pots are thinner, lighter and mass produced to a price - over time the water permeates the material and when it freezes (frosty mornings) the moisture expands leading to degradation and eventually cracking. We guarantee that won’t happen with any pot from Harrisons.

“To get a red Galloway, you need both parents to carry the red gene,” explained Carolyn. Eventually, due to arthritic pain preventing him from walking and doing his job, this bull was sent to the works in November last year. The Galloway is one of the oldest beef breeds with a history tracing back the Galloway district of southwest Scotland in the 1600s. Galloways were first imported to New Zealand in 1947. There are three types of Galloway in New Zealand — Belted, White and Standard. Within each type, there are three different colourways. “Galloways have a double-coat, which means they don’t need as much fat to keep them warm,” said Carolyn. “This makes the meat leaner, and the meat is also marbled. “Galloway meat has a higher amount of omega-3, which makes it good for you.” The size of Dawson’s property limits their freedom to breed and keep a lot of stock. However, the couple’s focus is to breed Belted Galloways that are close to the original description of the breed. “We sell our bulls to dairy farmers and send stock to the works,” said Carolyn.

“At the moment we have female stock for sale, all registered with Galloway New Zealand.” Although winters can be mild on the coastal property, it still gets cold. “Our summers are hot, and we rely on rain, which means we get our growth in spring and autumn,” said Carolyn. “We calve in autumn, so we have grass here for newly-calved animals, and we also have the spring growth to give the calves a boost.” The couple has found the breed to be great foragers with few health issues, easy-care and easy-calving. Their easy calving qualities make them sought after by dairy farmers. “It makes them pretty easy to look after.” Finding suitable bulls to use is the greatest challenge for the stud at the moment. “We are using United Kingdom bulls at present.” “Because we now have the red gene in our herd, it is a nice surprise if we get a red calf.” Although the couple doesn’t take their stock out to shows, they take part in the Galloway New Zealand’s virtual show and had some success. also enjoys attending the society’s AGM. Carolyn said the Galloways’ quiet nature makes them easy to work with and fun. “For a beef animal, which ensures high calving percentages, excellent mothering characteristics, high conversion rates (especially of rough pasture), sure-footedness and highquality marbled beef, the distinctive Belted Galloways cannot be bettered.” “Our goal is to breed the perfect Belted Galloway,” said Carolyn.

and call-outs by Denise Gunn

The opportunity to help people and give back to the local community was the drive behind Tony Eade’s decision to become a volunteer firefighter. The 46-year-old dairy farmer now balances fighting fires, attending accidents and medical emergencies, with working on the farm.

T

ony grew up on a sheep and beef farm at Paranui near Bulls. On leaving school, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and began training to be an aircraft mechanic. However, his passion for farming had already ignited, and he decided to return to the land. “The call to the country was too much, so I came home and went dairy farming,” said Tony. In 1992 Tony started work on a dairy farm near Scotts Ferry, just down the road from his childhood home. Soon afterwards he also took up studies towards a certificate in farm business management, through an industry training organisation.

“It taught me a lot of the financial side of farming,” “Cows and grass are a big part of dairy farming, but you also have to be able to sit in an office and do your budgets and financials” he said. Tony has worked in a variety of roles within the dairy industry, managing farms and sharemilking. He said the most challenging period was as a lower order sharemilker in Kopane during the 2004 floods. For the past four years, Tony has worked as part of a team of five, along with two relief milkers, for 50/50 sharemilkers Grant and Katherine Lovelock. The team milk 680 cows on a 250ha farm south of Foxton. Tony

shed and a good team. With farming, it’s a good feeling to see what you’ve achieved — the condition of the cows, the milk and the farm.” Nine years ago Tony signed up to become a volunteer firefighter as he wanted to give back to his community and help people. “I got involved when we moved to a farm near Foxton Beach. I had spent 18 months working as a livestock agent, and then we moved from the farm to Foxton Beach. I met a couple in the brigade, went to have a look and never looked back.” His involvement as a volunteer firefighter involves two hours training

on a Monday evening and call-outs any time of the day or night. As well as training to deal with various types of fires and vehicle accidents, firefighters are also taught fire safety, first aid and how to respond to medical emergencies. Tony said he has a very understanding boss. “It’s great that I have a flexible boss who knows that sometimes I have to go to a fire call-out at short notice. There’s also a good team available to fill in and milk.” The support of employers and workmates is just as vital to the work volunteer firefighters are called to do. Tony said the most challenging aspect

Helping people was Tony’s main drive to become a volunteer firefighter

of being a volunteer firefighter is seeing people at their lowest, hardest and worst times. However, he has found satisfaction in knowing he is making a difference by helping people. “We are there to help everyone who needs our help — including animals.”

Chondroitin: forgotten hero

Landcorp chair appointed The government has appointed, a primary industries leader, Dr Warren Parker, as director and chair of Landcorp.

by John Arts

(Part 2) Last edition we looked at a major research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose Chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of highgrade CS is the number one natural compound to help stabilise joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade Chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly, and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. It comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. Give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. As manufacturers, we know what to look for in a plastic tank and only work with trusted partners. Our nationwide coverage and purchasing power ensures we can deliver on our promise of best quality, best price and best advice. Our local service includes tank and system installation, from set-up advice, site preparation, tank connection, pre and post tank water filtration. The heart of a water system

Save Lives

Be it for farm or lifestyle block trough supply or irrigation, swimming pool operation, or household supply from a rainwater tank or bore, mechanical and electric water pumps are an integral part of rural life. In the summer months, they often work overtime. The pump shed is the heart of any water supply system, and the mechanism inside needs to be at the top of its game creating the right pressure and flow for the amount of water required for a given task. Periodic testing of pump performance and ensuring maintenance is key to operational performance. Developing a pump maintenance checklist will keep your pump functioning efficiently and trim down your everyday expenditure for upkeep and give some protection against a loss of water supply. First on the list is a frequent check to make sure that the speed of the water pump corresponds with the output in horsepower. Also, examine the water system for leakages, fissure or wear and tear. Regular maintenance can prevent damage and reduce costs of replacement parts. Less frequently, it might pay for a monthly examination to check and repair seals, oil bearings to manufacturers specifications, confirm that the water pump is secured firmly against over vibration and also check plugs and wiring on electrical systems.

CLEANWATER

SOLUTIONS

If you are a typical kiwi operator, it’s pretty certain you can perform daily and monthly maintenance personally. Once a year, it probably pays to call in a professional, if only for peace of mind, and even more important, to make sure you are covered by your insurance requirement. Technicians are trained in their field to fine-tune, restore or repair the bearings, drive belt or any other faulty part. In addition, a technician needs to carry out a vibration and temperature examination to make sure that the motor is running in peak condition. FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

We specialise in:

Steady maintenance to avoid preventable damage and costs is a nobrainer. In addition, you can improve water pump performance in a number of ways such as adding a small booster pump, perhaps increasing household pressure from a rainwater tank, or cutting back bigger pumps that are not necessary and altering the speed of the pump so it is more proficient. Your own maintenance coupled with expert advice once a year should go a long way towards having trouble-free water supplies, be it for a household, a pool or something further afield.

Water matters most

It is often taken for granted that fresh, clean water will always be available, but many rural people are caught out as water shortages become a reality during summer. Water is a vital part of everyday life, and people don’t always realise only a certain amount is in our tanks, rivers, streams and dams, especially those who have recently moved from urban areas. Sometimes demand is greater than supply with an average New Zealand family uses 250 to 300 litres of water for each person daily. In a typical household, the bathroom, kitchen and laundry use 25 per cent of the daily volume with the toilet using 30 per cent and the last 20 per cent used outdoors. It is also important to know that under the Animal Welfare Act it is the owner’s legal responsibility to ensure any animals in their care have adequate water and find supplied. When watering your garden in the summer remember a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour and water low to the ground and slow when it is cool and calm, not in the heat of the day or in windy weather when water will evaporate rather than soak in. Watering by hand or on an irrigation system controlled by a timer is best

World class fishing on your Doorstep

as moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. Check your water tank levels and order extra water early from your water delivery person to ensure your daily life is not interrupted. Repair any leaking taps, tanks and pipes early as a small drip uses more water than you think. Sixty drips a minute uses 21 litres a day — over a year that is some 7,644 litres wasted. Catching rainwater in suitable containers is a good way to provide water for the garden and

chickens. Remember to keep your house gutters and roof clean to stop debris and rodent or bird waste entering your tank and check if your tank needs cleaning annually and ensure regularly that possums and birds have not fallen in and decayed. Water matters most as it is needed for a healthy life for animals and humans alike. Taking care of it is one of the import aspects of ensuring your farm, lifestyle block and household run smoothly.

Water tank cleaning experts Mobi-Care Water Tank and Filtration Specialists have been providing households and rural schools with an efficient, clean water tank and tank repair service for seven years. There has been significant growth in the awareness of clean water. People are now demanding that their rural water supply maintain New Zealand’s drinking water standard in their own supply. These days there is no need to be drinking water fouled by excessive rotting debris and faecal matter that lurks in the bottom of water tanks. The Mobile Water Tank and Filtration business offer a complete tank water service, which includes cleaning all water tanks, water filtration, general water blasting and water trough cleaning. A full repair and replastering service for concrete tanks are available. Other specialities include cleaning of water lines, hot and cold water blasting residential/commercial buildings and cowsheds, sheep sheds, roofs and patios. Operating a hot water blaster enables the more complex of jobs to be executed easily and save time. Cleaning a water tank takes around two hours. The water is first pumped away or saved into a holding vessel. The tank walls are lightly water-blasted to remove all algae and debris. The bottom is vacuumed, and when the job is finished, water can be arranged to fill

the tank. The process is repeated until the water is pristine clean. Mobi-Care operator Warren Nitsckhe says he has found everything from dead rats, possums and birds to a metre of sludgy muck in the bottom of some tanks. He says he has seen live slugs and snails as well as other unsavoury creatures in various water supplies. All tanks need attention and underground and patio tanks build up badly in corners. Round tanks have algae growing right over the surface areas. “A lot of people call because of foulsmelling, bad tasting water, stomach aches or just because it must have been a while and it is no wonder when you see what is in their tanks. “Recently there have been people getting ill through drinking contaminated water as a greater percentage of contamination, such as E coli, coliform, giardia or cryptosporidia is being transported by birds and other animals and their faeces ending up in the tank. One of the worst scenarios is to have fresh, clean water delivered into a dirty tank; the water immediately becomes contaminated with the decomposing sludge.”

MOBI-CARE MOBILE WATER TANK CARE & WATER FILTRATION SPECIALISTS CLEANING OF:

• Water Tanks (Save Water Options) • Water Troughs • Guttering • Water Treatment

His recommendation along with New Zealand drinking water standard is to clean and sanitise household tanks annually. Mobi-Care has a large range of micron filters to be fitted to downpipes, tank or water lines, thus stopping major amounts of sediment, eg bird faecal material and leaves, etc — reaching the tanks. A new range of inline filters and whole house filters are available — this

can help prevent household appliance filters clogging. Nitsckhe stresses that it is also important for water troughs to be cleaned regularly. The strong vacuum system guarantees that nothing is left to be passed on to animals. Mobi-Care is proud to be providing this cost-effective, efficient and healthorientated service for the community. Sharp As Linehaul When Sharp As Linehaul Limited wanted to step the business up a gear, no one could have realised how quickly the gears were going to change in such a short time. Daryl James’ linehaul business was growing steadily to meet the demands of the industry and customers. He had established Sharp As Linehaul Limited in 2010 with just one truck, which had grown steadily to a fleet of 11 trucks. Kylie Penn had been managing a local sporting organisation since 2010, but wanted to go back to owning a business again. Kylie came in to support Daryl in his transport business. Having his current fleet serviced on time was a constant challenge for Daryl, often having to take trucks outside of Wanganui. He and Kylie identified a gap in the market for a diesel workshop in the city. Their plan fell into place quicker than either imagined. Within a month their idea came to fruition and the workshop, situated in Rakau Road, Wanganui opened for business in July 2018. They were fortunate to employ experienced Workshop Manager Wayne Wright, taking care of the day to day running of this division. “We knew Wayne was going to be a critical key to this division of the business, given the strong relationships he has established over a number of years in the transport industry” says Kylie. With this new venture into full swing, it wasn’t long before the next part of an unplanned venture fell into what Daryl and Kylie’s vision was for their long-term plan. This was the engagement with Southern Milk

Transport, a part of Open Country Dairy. A partnership was finalised last month contracting Sharp As Linehaul to cart the milk from the farms to the processing plant in Wanganui. Open Country has four milk processing plants in the country; Horotiu, Waharoa, Wanganui & Awarua, and exports to over 50 global markets. Open Country has continued to increase volumes since 2009. The trucks will be travelling in excessive of 2.5million K’s picking up from multiple farm. The farms are located from Horowhenua to Taranaki. Sharp As will supply 18 Trucks and the labour force to operate them. The Sharp As truck fleet will grow with the purchase of twelve new Scania R500 Trucks. The new Scania R-Series set a new standard in the long-haulage truck design and technology with the surprising high engine torque. Daryl and Kylie look forward to entering into a family owned partnership with Open Country Dairy. This partnership will commence in January 2019 and will be in full swing by 1st August 2019. With this new contract and the current businesses, Daryl and Kylie anticipate that they will employ approximately 65 staff across all divisions. “From the current fleet of trucks to the new fleet, this will complete our original plan of opening the workshop in Wanganui” says Daryl. Part of Open Country’s philosophy is an emphasis on family, which fits Sharp As Linehaul’s culture well, with Daryl’s son Mason James being one of their key employees

Daryl James & Kylie Penn, Managing Directors of Sharp As Group

Open Country Dairy Truck. Soon to be operated by Sharp As within the business. Daryl and Kylie value their team highly and their staff always go the extra mile when required. Being a locally owned and operated business will create opportunities, and contribute to economic growth

within the Wanganui region. In its eight years Sharp As has built up its business based on quality and good reputation. Daryl, Kylie and their team pride themselves on this, and will continue to strive for excellence in service delivery.

When common sense prevails

17

by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

Nobody would argue that the people of the Manawatu town of Ashhurst have had a hard time with traffic in the eighteen months or so since the Manawatu Gorge finally closed permanently. It’s the same empathy we would have for any town through this electorate where heavy buses and trucks squeeze past the parked cars, stop at the pedestrian crossings and go about their business right through the shopping area, often near hospitals, kindergartens and schools. When the gorge proved unreliable Ashhurst stepped up, but inevitably the talk turned to a bypass, as has been the case in a number of towns throughout New Zealand. A good way up further up the wish list was a proposed new Manawatu-Tararua highway to provide a robust road link between Manawatu and the eastern North Island, not a road of national significance but given the rural nature of the whole region and the progressive industries and wonderful produce we’re known for, it probably should be! Yes, a bypass was promised. However, a closer investigation about the cost and practicalities gave way to common sense on what could be managed. To put mega millions into the bypass, which would probably have meant two to three

years dust, noise and inconvenience for the people in the surrounding area would have been a suspect decision. Instead, I think the NZ Transport Agency has done a wonderful proactive job of planning and executing traffic calming, noise reduction and safety enhancements. Not only have they communicated the planning well with the Ashhurst community, but they have already gone ahead on the most urgent safety improvements. Trees are being

removed, road surfaces have been improved and intersections redesigned. Of course, there is a lot more detail to be worked on, but what I saw at a community open day looked like a comprehensive and well thought-out

compromise, and I have been happy to say that in nationwide media. Well done to all involved in the programme that is underway. Moreover, am I the first to suggest the byline “Ashhurst, the town with the traffic light”?

Getting a super bounce Supertramps Trampolines have been around for 40 odd years and are one of the only 100% New Zealand made trampolines left in the country, with a reputation for being the longest lasting tramp on the market. A New Zealand-owned and operated manufacturing company specialising in outdoor weather protection products, Canvasland took license of the Supertramps brand around 1990 and purchased Outdoor Living, which designed and manufactured the Superoctopus octagonal model at the time. The two companies were amalgamated, and Supertramps Trampolines was born. The manufacture of both the rectangle and octagonal models has remained in Levin ever since. It is integral to the brand to keep all manufacturing in New Zealand, supporting local businesses and maintaining quality control at its best. The structural integrity of a Supertramp Trampoline has always been at the forefront. They are a family trampoline, and the frames are built to recognise that. We use a 65 x 35 x 3.0 galvanised box section steel, which is manufactured to the highest level of Australian/ New Zealand standards, AS/NZS

1163:2016, leaving you with total confidence in your trampoline frame. Keeping manufacturing local allows us to offer additional options like custom powder coated frames, and custom coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas Eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp. While they slept, we easily pieced it together. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, the whole neighbourhood. “Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my kids learned at an early age, has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have competed in trampolining, but we all enjoy a bounce especially when friends are

over. Honestly, the safety pads are great and the games double when the sides are clear. I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. They’re durable; they’re quiet, they’re great for young and old.“ Michelle Richardson, Mt Maunganui — 6/11/2017. Supertramps are an heirloom. 100% designed and manufactured right here in Levin, New Zealand — built to last a lifetime.

he two Horowhenua women have had a passion for horses and riding for many years; they first set a goal to race in the Gobi Desert Cup around eight years ago. “I think it seemed like an exciting, challenging, horse-related adventure, from that initial conversation, it remained something we talked about and always aimed to achieve.” said Stephanie.

Stephanie signed up to the race in December 2017 and booked flights in May. Although Kasmira couldn’t commit to the race at that stage, her circumstances changed in July, so she signed up at the last minute. The pair began training together on a couple of crossbred horses belonging to Stephanie. They also went to the gym for strength-training, and

cardio workouts — attended Pilates classes and went mountain biking. “We tested all kinds of different gear; jodhpurs, socks, gloves, jerseys and jackets, stirrups, seat-savers — you name it,” said Stephanie. “We were trying to find what would be most comfortable for the length of time we would be in the saddle, and we spent hours riding, trying to prepare ourselves for what we would be experiencing in Mongolia.” When Stephanie and Kasmira arrived in Mongolia’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, they met all the other riders before the race. Riders were driven out to the Gobi Desert in several old Soviet-era vans and had a short training ride on arrival at their first camp that evening. Another training ride followed the next day to give riders a chance to get to know the horses and practice the vetting process before the race. Kasmira said once the race began, no two days were exactly the same. “Some days we were riding to a new campsite and having lunch out on the track. Other days we were looping back to the same campsite for another night, so we would also have lunch back at the base.” The Mongolian herders watched the horses at night to ensure as few as possible tried to run home. Some of the horses had been brought in from more than 100km away to be a part of the race, and naturally wanted to get back to their herd. Each morning the herders brought the horses in to saddle them up with the rider’s individual gear. Locals were employed to cook meals for the

riders and also to pack up and move campsites too. “On the first day of racing, we were blessed by a monk, which was quite special, and the ride did not start out as overly competitive, with everyone seeming keen to enjoy the ride with new found friends,” said Stephanie. “On about the third or fourth day, the leaderboard was released and the following day saw a noticeable shift in racing. The scoreboard leaders obviously feeling that the stakes had been raised. “Vet checks at lunchtime and at the end of the day’s riding were always a little tense; everyone hoping we had done everything we needed to do to get the horse home sound, and able to recover within the allowed 30 minutes before their heart rate was taken. “Kaz and I rode with the US team most days and had a great time joking and laughing, and learning all about endurance riding from these seasoned pros.” Stephanie and Kasmira found the horses to be hard workers. “They are really very neat little horses,” said Stephanie. Kasmira said most of her horses were really good as well. “I had a couple of slowish ones and some really fast ones too who just wanted to go.” Riders had a new horse each day of riding — six in total. “I had one extra as the horse we used for the two training days was supposed to be our horses on the first race day. But my little guy had other plans, and he apparently ran home overnight,” said Stephanie. There were many race highlights for the riders, which included

The horses were hard workers

meeting other like-minded people, the landscape and the horses. “One of the Australia mums had a horse on the last day that seemed to keep bolting away from the group, the first time he shot off from the bunch, she was not quite as far back as halfway, but we heard ‘coming through’ as he burst through the group of riders and disappeared, leaving a dust cloud behind him. You knew where he had gone because of the trail of dust rising up in his wake — it was like a cartoon.” After six days in the saddle, Kasmira and Stephanie crossed the finish line

together completing an adventure of a lifetime. “Even now it’s hard to get our heads around the scale of that accomplishment,” said Stephanie. Kasmira said it was an amazing feeling to cross the finish line. Although Stephanie and Kasmira don’t plan to compete in another Gobi Desert Cup, they have set themselves other equestrian goals. “However, I would definitely want to go back to Mongolia at some stage as it is a pretty extraordinary country,” said Kasmira.

Counting the cost of effluent

DAIRY

The value of animal effluent is a fact of farming life; it is a natural, dilute liquid fertiliser rich in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that are a valuable roil enricher. Think of dairy effluent as a resource, not a waste. The average dairy herd of say 250 produces the same amount of effluent as a medium-sized rural town. That’s a lot to dispose of, and when spread over land and applied in a timely

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

fashion, the effluent of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars. Applying the maximum 150 kg of nitrogen a hectare amount from effluent for grazed grass dairy shed effluent also provides approximately 20kg of phosphate,117 kg of potassium, 20 to 30 kg of sulphur and smaller amounts of magnesium and calcium a hectare. Effluent management systems in place should provide enough flexibility so that irrigation can be suspended when the soil is waterlogged or if there is an irrigation equipment breakdown. While it might be liquid gold, water troughs need to be protected from spray

sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away. Soil acts as a filter, but it can only filter so much effluent at a time. It’s important to match the irrigation depth to the capability of the soil. Land with impeded or artificial drainage, high or rising water tables or slopes of greater than seven degrees have a higher risk from over-application, and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions. Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as pollute nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then there is groundwater itself that must

be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. The Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) has been managing research on the use of dairy shed effluent on arable farms and has found when long-term, high fertility dairy pasture was taken out of the pasture and put into a maize crop, there were enough nutrients in the soil for two seasons of maize. Applying dairy effluent to low fertility cropping farms offered a win-win for both farming types. It would reduce the nutrient loading on dairy pastures, decreasing the risk of production issues such as grass staggers and nutrient losses to the environment, while providing macro and trace elements for crop production and reduce fertiliser costs.

National standard for organics Increasing moves towards the production of organic meat will be assisted with the introduction of a national standard for organic production as a government bill next year to help give consumers confidence in organic claims and businesses certainty to invest and innovate in the growing sector. “It will also help grow our organic export trade as it brings us in line with international approaches to regulation. We are one of only two of the top 25 organic markets in the world that have voluntary instead of mandatory standards,” says agriculture and food safety minister, Damien O’Connor. “The global demand for organic products is increasing and our organic sector has responded with growth of 30 per cent over the past couple of years, and is now worth about $600 million a year. A majority of public submissions earlier this year supported the government’s approach of a single set of rules for organic production. I am pleased we can now move ahead with the changes so our agribusinesses can extract more value from what they do as soon as possible.” Primary industries spokesperson for the Greens, Gareth Hughes said: “We know organics is key to sustainable land use and helps reinforce New Zealand’s reputation as a trusted producer of highvalue natural products.” The next step is to draft an organics bill to be introduced next year, and there

will be opportunities for the public and the sector to feedback at the select committee stage. Mr O’Connor was joined by Mr Hughes for the announcement at the Horticulture Export Authority’s release of the report Barriers to Our Export Trade in Wellington.

Red Snap’r has done it again Electric fence monitoring has now been around for just beyond two years since we introduced the Red Trout IP Energiser to the farming community at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in 2016. We have three units available, eight, 12 and 16 output Joules. The energiser will let you know via your mobile phone in real time the exact voltage on the fence. If there is a drop in power below the minimum voltage you have programmed, you will be advised immediately with a message to your phone. In other words, there are no additional gadgets required, just the IP Energiser and a mobile phone. To make matters even more interesting for you, we do not charge for this extra convenience. The three IP energisers can be powered both by mains or battery, and they are offered at around 30% less than similar energisers on the market which do not have this monitoring facility. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and the Minister of Research, Science and Innovation, Dr Megan Woods opened the facilities in Auckland, which is the largest of Plant & Food Research’s New Zealand sites. The $49 million redevelopment includes work on the seven-storey Hamilton building ensuring Plant & Food Research can continue to deliver highquality science for New Zealand’s plant and marine-based food industries. The Hamilton Building originally opened in 1973 and named for William Hamilton, director general of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research from 1953 to 1971. Few significant developments had been made to the building, and many of the facilities were in need of upgrading. “The new high-quality, purpose-built facilities of the Hamilton, Cunningham and Padfield buildings will allow us to deliver more and better science for our partners and New Zealand,” says CEO of Plant & Food Research, David Hughes.

These staff members work with teams across New Zealand to deliver research that supports the sustainable production of plant and marine-based food products. “Our science supports New Zealand’s leading companies to create new

Out of the wild continent

WHEELS

25

by Andy Bryenton

The year is 1985 — state of the art in home computing is still less powerful than today’s microwave ovens, big hair is king, and the charts are topped by the ‘king of pop’, Michael Jackson. The Paris to Dakar might be the ultimate endurance test for a vehicle — spanning mountains, deserts, tropical heat and burning sand; it’s long been associated with a level of automotive obsession bordering on the unhinged. It forges great stories — and even better machines. In the 1980s, Honda embarked on a series of four victories in this gruelling crucible of motorsport, stamping their mark once and for all as the masters of off-road adventure bike design. The masterpiece they presented to the public in 1989 was called the Africa Twin. Now, three decades on, the 2019 model of the Africa Twin is a fitting tribute to that legendary machine — and more. Not content to pay homage to a moment in sporting history with a few badges and a neat colour scheme — although the new Honda is dressed in racing livery — the engineers behind the Africa Twin have added the best of modern tech as well. It’s the kind of stuff

that those original Paris to Dakar riders would have wished for. The engine is bigger and more powerful — a liquid-cooled unicam fourstroke parallel twin beefed up to 998cc and equipped with fuel injection. The massive fuel tank delivers up to 500 kilometres of riding between pit stops. Throttle by wire technology means that a rider can select from three distinct riding modes, with a fourth available on the DCT model for pure off-road action. All-round the ground clearance has been improved, weather protection and wind reduction fettled, and rider comfort for long-haul trips brought to the fore. It’s a machine, which could confidently tackle the wilds of any continent — that inspires huge confidence for those out there who want to explore New Zealand. We might not have roasting hot deserts and steaming jungles, but with mud, gravel, blacktop and wild weather, having a machine built to devour the miles despite all nature’s whims makes for excellent peace of mind.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

“We have a wonderful team working with us — Alex, Allan and Lance. Together we have more than 50 years of small motor mechanic experience, and we work on all types of equipment,” says Megan. The staff are equipped to repair everything from lawnmowers through to the unusual jobs like go-karts, concrete saws and even the odd hovercraft. Central Mowers is an independent family-owned store, and Megan says this gives them the luxury of personally choosing the brands they sell. “That is why we have stayed independent — we decide what we sell and what we don’t. You can be sure when you purchase from us that the products are very good quality and our backup service includes parts that are held on-site. “We carry brands including Big Dog zero turn ride-on mowers, Cub Cadet, Lawnmaster, Masport, Oleo-Mac, Shindaiwa, Echo, Victa and Makita — we have a product to meet your every need and fit any budget. “We are often complimented on our quick turnaround and are able to

prioritise if something is urgent. We do the best we can for our clients and believe in recycling and restoring wherever possible even though we sell new products. If we can put life back into older equipment, we will, including granddad’s old mower. “Our family is very community orientated — Rob and Stacey live in the rural village of Halcombe, where Stacey is the treasurer of the Halcombe Community Development Group, and Rob is known to do pickup and deliveries on his way to and from work. Simon and I live on a sheep and beef farm in Halcombe, where Simon is a

volunteer fireman, and we are involved in the Feilding Saturday Morning Rugby Club — where both our children Toby and Finn play.” “Being family friendly, over Christmas we have balloons, marshmallow Santas and candy canes for the children. The store will be open at reduced hours during the holiday period, see our website for details.” For all your outdoor power equipment needs visit Central Mower Services at 696 Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North, phone 06 355 2967. Protection from rustlers

The introduction of a Supplementary Order Paper on the Crimes Amendment bill to protect farmers from livestock rustlers is a win for all farmers. “The two new offences of theft of livestock or other animal, and unlawful entry to land used for agricultural purposes, will give power back to farmers, the police and the judiciary when it comes to dealing with offenders,” says rural security spokesperson, Miles Anderson. Federated Farmers thanks the justice minister Andrew Little over his quick moves to protect farmers from livestock rustlers. “The credit for this work goes to many. First of all, a thank you to my predecessor Rick Powdrell. A huge amount of work from Rick went into getting rustlers viewed as a serious threat to rural communities. “To National’s Ian McKelvie and Labour’s Kieran McAnulty — thank you for listening to your constituents. Full marks to parliament and the Primary Production Committee.” Mr Anderson says what was originally proposed through the Livestock Rustling Amendment bill had not gone far enough to discourage livestock theft.

“This SOP now delivers on what we asked for. The cost of livestock theft to the farming community is incredibly daunting and can kill a business.” Rustling ranges from the basic opportunist to highly organised professional operations. “Farmers currently feel powerless to counter livestock theft. Now that the legislation is coming into force to effectively punish these criminals, it would be good to see the rural police resources to back it,” he says. “To the farming public, we need to get our reporting up on stock rustling so the police can act. I understand it can be daunting to report criminals, especially when it comes to organised crime, but please note the police have several ways you can log a concern including anonymously. As with all rural crime, if you see something, say something.”
