he festival, which gets underway on Friday, January 7, starts with a meet and greet evening from 5pm. Organiser Lynn Crawford-Putt said there would also be opportunities during the evening for anyone to take the stage. An open mic on Saturday morning will provide the audience with another chance to perform. “Saturday afternoon, the talent steps to another level. We invite artists from all around the country to entertain. Then moving into Saturday night, the level goes up again.” Top country music guest artists lined up to perform, include Chris Welson, Susanne Taylor, Mark Corbett and Robbin Durban. Lynn said these performers would be followed by Cooper’s Run. “Bevan Gardiner and James Davy from Dunedin will take the night out. Sunday is a free-for-all to sing. Some of our guests may reappear before they have to start their travel home.” Four years ago, Lynn and her three sisters got together to organise the inaugural Egmont Country Music Festival. The first event was held at the Tikorangi Rugby Club before moving to the New Plymouth Racecourse. “Over that time, we have had appearances at the festival by Laura Downing from Australia and the Topp Twins in 2021. Dennis Marsh, Marian Burns, Annette and Kim, Denver and Beyond, Cooper’s Run, Cliff Whitemore, all from New Zealand, have joined us over this time. “Now, sadly, with having lost one of my sisters and ill health with another, we now have a team of local people who work beside me to form a team to bring this festival to Taranaki.”

The Topp Twins performed at last year’s Egmont Country Music Festival

Due to Covid-19, the 2022 festival will move to 39 Ninia Road, Bell Block. “We made this change this year to keep it safer for our artists and audience. At the racecourse in 2021, we also had L.A.B. at the Bowl of Brooklands, which was fine. However, given the foot traffic we had moving through the racecourse after the show, and knowing L.A.B. will return in January at the same time, we thought we would be safer to move our venue.” The Ninia Road venue is also a petfriendly park over property for motorhomes and caravans. Entry to the park over property opens up on Thursday, January 6 at noon, with motorhome parking $20 for each van for four days. There is plenty of room for car parking too. The festival costs $50 for each person for the entire weekend, or $20 for Friday night, $35 for Saturday and $10 for Sunday. Food and drinks will be available. “While Taranaki has the orange light, we can open this festival up. Covid rules will apply. Should we turn to red light, we do have to limit numbers, so get in quick to be sure you have your spot booked.” Bookings can be made by contacting countrygirl50@primowireless.co.nz or call 0273 496 824. “If Covid closes this festival, refunds will be given,” said Lynn. The festival finishes on Sunday, January 9 2022, at 4pm.

Top award for Manawatū River

DEcEMbER 2021

The collective efforts of the Manawatū River Leaders’ Forum to improve the Manawatū catchment’s health has been recognised by the Cawthron New Zealand River Awards. Manawatū River Leaders’ Forum cochair and Tanenuiarangi Manawatū Incorporated chief executive Danielle Harris said the supreme award for Catchment with Most Progress Toward Improved River Health recognises not only interventions in the river but the collective mahi undertaken on the ground. Since signing the accord in 2010, significant work has been undertaken by iwi and hapū, local government, environmental groups, community groups, industry and landowners.

“Accord members firmly believe that by working together we can achieve more than working alone, for the benefit of all. We are all kaitiaki (guardians) of the river, so if we step up and protect our taonga, its mauri (lifeforce) will return and thrive for future matatahi (generations).” Manawatū River Leaders’ Forum cochair and Horizons Regional Council chair Rachel Keedwell said collectively, the forum had produced two action plans representing stakeholders’ commitments. “The forum has also secured government co-funding for multi-

organisational implementation projects. This includes a successful $5.2 million bid to the central government’s Fresh Start for Fresh Water Clean-Up Fund and $2.9 million from the Freshwater Improvement Fund. “In conjunction with central government funding, over $66 million has been invested by the catchment’s regional, city and district councils, and landowners through accord initiatives. “This includes significant wastewater infrastructure upgrades (including moving to land treatment), more than five million trees being planted, 1,000km of stream fencing erected, 68 fish passage barriers removed, and 270 environmental farm plans and over 70 community projects completed. “Horizons also recently secured $4.6 million Jobs for Nature funding to accelerate their existing stream fencing and riparian planting programme.” Ms Keedwell said the supreme award of $10,000 will supplement this work in the Manawatū catchment. In 2016, iwi leaders from the catchment were successful in securing a $534,000 Te Mana o Te Wai grant towards Tū Te Manawa. “This iwi-led project coordinated and supported efforts to share histories and stories of the awa with the community while enhancing and protecting sites of significance,” said Ms Harris. “The accord’s achievements have been a herculean effort and very much worth celebrating as dollars can place no value on all the mahi and results we are experiencing and seeing.”

BY DENISE GUNN

Growing up on the outskirts of Gisborne, veterinarian Lisa Whitfield’s childhood was spent exploring hills and farmland.

W

ith an affinity for animals apparent from a young age, it was natural for Lisa to decide to study veterinary science. Her family always had cats; she looked after the neighbour’s dogs, bred canaries and quail, and occasionally rode a friend’s horse. During the school holidays, Lisa often visited a dairy farm owned by extended family members too. As the youngest child in her family, Lisa had seen her older siblings finish high school and head off to university. “I understood how important subject choices at high school would be for getting

into university and vet school and to be able to do the job I wanted to do. I was lucky to be able to plan a pathway right from the start of high school,” said Lisa. After graduating from vet school, Lisa moved to Northland to start her career, working in Dargaville. “Here, I was lucky enough to be exposed to a wide range of animals, both small and large, and all things in between. It was a great place to see all sorts of interesting cases and to begin to develop my practical veterinary skills. “I remember one day being faced with a seal, which had a shark bite on its neck.

During last year’s national lockdown, Lisa began to establish her own farm veterinary service

Not something they teach you about treating in vet school.” With the nearest referral centre and specialists an hour’s drive away, Lisa had a lot of learning opportunities starting in a rural community.

“I realised how much more there was to learn as well. That’s what led me back to Massey University in the end.” A lot of interesting and unusual cases presented during Lisa’s work at Massey University.

Years of dairy farm experience has given Lisa a new perspective on caring for farm animals

“It became normal to see and diagnose weird and wonderful things. That is the joy of a teaching hospital. The pathology department at Massey really helped with this, too — getting answers to those tricky cases. “Going into each case with an open mind helps when it comes to the unusual. Taking on board an owner’s observations of their animal often leads you down the path of discovery.” An internship at Massey University’s equine clinic, along with completing her Master of Veterinary Medicine degree which included a research project, and working with inspiring people, have been some of Lisa’s work and study highlights. During last year’s national lockdown due to Covid-19, Lisa developed an idea to establish her own business, Farm Vet Services. She set business goals, including providing a complete veterinary service for large animals and working to fill a niche in the market. “That includes providing timely and responsive veterinary care for all large animal species that will be found on lifestyle blocks and farms.

“I also aim to provide educational opportunities to large animal owners to help them recognise when their animals need attention, what sort of care can be provided, and when they should be phoning me to get help.” “I will go wherever I am needed within reason. However, I am focussing on Palmerston North and its surrounds, from Pohangina Valley to Shannon, and from Himatangi to the ranges.” For the past couple of years, in addition to working as a vet, Lisa has worked two full seasons on a dairy farm, gaining an entirely new perspective on the

care of farm animals, pasture and feed management, and being responsible for animal welfare. “I think this experience has given me a unique perspective to bring to my new business.” Lisa said the practical, problem-solving parts of being a veterinarian are the most enjoyable aspects of the job. “Every patient is different. What works in one situation may not work for another, so a flexible approach is required. And in the end, I guess it all boils down to being able to care for animals. That’s where it all started for me.” Future plans for Lisa’s business are to develop a sustainable business model, which will involve veterinary technicians and maybe another vet or two. “A career as a vet is a real journey. You never know everything, and I love learning new things.”

HIGH FLYING CAREER

IN THE SKY The moment Bob Monds first saw a topdressing aircraft while growing up on a King Country farm in the 1960s, he knew he wanted to fly.

Bob was a Te Kuiti High School student and a Venturer Scout when the opportunity to learn to fly came along. He attended an annual flying school for budding young aviators, held through the scouting movement at Matamata. In 1970, Bob saved money to attend the fourth Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School, where he flew solo for the first time. “Here are you, alone flying this aircraft. You are in control of it. I yelled with

excitement on the downwind leg of my first solo circuit. I had made it this far, and the start of my journey towards my ag-flying career had started.” Bob continued flying at the Waitomo Aero Club, gaining his private pilot’s licence in 1971. When Bob finished high school, he worked for a stock and station agent, Newton King. On turning 18, Bob gained his heavy traffic driver licence, enabling

him to go loader driving for one of the local aerial topdressing companies. In 1975, Bob passed his commercial pilot’s licence flight test in a Cessna 150. While working for Newton King, Bob’s weekends were spent learning loader driving for topdressing company Robertson Air Services. When the loader driver returned to farming, Bob took on his job as a loader driving full-time with pilot Alistair Carter at Te Kuiti. Eighteen months later, Bob transferred to Rural Air Services to hasten his opportunity to fly. “I was originally trained to be a roving pilot to move around the company’s seven branches, helping out as an extra aircraft during the busy seasons. “The pilot that was based in Feilding at the time left the company, and I took over his role as one of the two planes based at Feilding, servicing the local farming area.”

Bob gained his private pilot’s licence in 1971, followed by his commercial pilot’s licence four years later

Feilding has now been Bob’s base for 44 years, topdressing there and aerial spraying from Northland to Wellington, Taranaki to East Cape.

For Home Owners DO YOU WANT THE WARM WALL FEEL OF A NEW HOME?

Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

The topdressing industry services around two-thirds of New Zealand’s pastoral land area

“I am among a handful of fixed-wing pilots still spraying throughout New Zealand. I did a brief stint in Australia in 2000 spraying cotton; otherwise, all my agflying has been around the North Island.” Bob and his business partner and loader driver, Paul Wiseman, sold Rural Air Services 1986 Ltd to Super Air in April 2020. Paul has been his loader driver for most of Bob’s career. With 39 years of experience, the pair is currently one of the longest-serving fixed-wing agricultural pilot/driver combinations in New Zealand. Through selling to Super Air, Bob and Paul retained their jobs, remaining as the pilot/driver for the Manawatū branch of Super Air. “It’s great to be a part of the team at Super Air. It’s a great go-ahead company investing heavily in new

aircraft, application technologies and aircraft loaders. “Health and safety are paramount for the company, ensuring their staff are fully trained and qualified to carry out their tasks in a safe working environment.” During his 44-year flying career, Bob has flown a wide range of aircraft. He currently flies an Airtractor 502B, fitted in a multi-role capacity for topdressing and spraying. He has been a part of the transition from flying piston-powered aircraft to a GPS Track Guidance System. Wire strikes are a major hazard for agricultural pilots, and Bob has survived several. A heart attack in 2016 also sidelined him for 13 months before he could return to agricultural flying. He’s had a couple of close calls in the air too. While spraying gorse for the army

at Waiouru, Bob’s plane’s engine blew up, and oil landed on the windscreen. Bob made a split decision to land on the Desert Road. After another engine was fitted by engineers, a local police officer closed the road so Bob could fly out. Following the Rena disaster in Tauranga, Bob is now part of a team spraying oil dispersants on oil spills at sea. He has also trained through Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), learning escape and survival techniques at sea. He is a qualified E-category instructor too. Bob intends to continue agricultural flying a while longer, passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation. “I have met many great people along the way, and I thank them for the opportunity to spend time with them.”

Rice paper rolls by Jessica Keesing

If you’re into something, a little different, here’s the thing for you. They’re not much on their own, but once you put them in the dipping sauce, it’s a taste sensation. If you don’t want to put all the ingredients into a rice paper wrapper, this just as a salad, works a treat. You can use any meat you want or make them vegetarian.

INGREDIENTS 500g chicken thigh/prawn/pork ½ cucumber cut into battens 1 capsicum cut into battens 1 carrot cut into battens Mint Basil Rice paper skins 1 packet vermicelli noodles 2 cups chicken broth 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 cloves garlic 1 onion 1 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp whole peppercorns 1 chilli Dipping sauce: ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup fish sauce ¼ cup rice wine vinegar 1 tsp chilli and garlic paste 1 tsp sesame oil METHOD In a pot, add coriander and peppercorns and toast until aromatic. Once aromatic,

add chicken broth, onion, soy, chilli and garlic and allow to simmer until flavours have combined. Once combined, add the chicken and allow to poach until cooked through. While the chicken is poaching, prepare capsicum, cucumber, pick mint and basil leaves and prepare vermicelli noodles following the instructions on the packet. Set aside. Combine all dipping sauce ingredients and set aside. Once the chicken has poached, pull apart and start the assembling process. Dip the rice paper roll into water (make sure you don’t make it completely sodden, otherwise it will be hard to roll), add vermicelli noodles, chicken, cucumber, capsicum and then the mint and basil leaves, then roll. Then enjoy. The sauce is easy enough to tweak where you need to, I like it a bit tart and salty; however, do whatever works for you.

Do I need a nutritional supplement? by John Arts

It is not hard to motivate someone in pain to do things that will relieve pain. We make more of our Bettaflex joint support supplement than any other. It is harder to motivate healthy people to adopt measures that will keep them healthy. Today, we look at the benefits of nutritional supplements. During the past 25 years, I have seen thousands improve their quality of life with high-grade nutritional supplements. I consider a well-formulated multimineral/vitamin/antioxidant formula is one of the best health investments we can make. Three words summarise the reasons to use nutritional supplements: deficiency, suboptimum and optimum. There are some nutrients lacking to the point where a deficiency causes disease. For example, vitamin D deficiency will cause the bone disease rickets. We thought rickets was a third world problem, but an excellent study (Wheeler et al., 2015) commented that vitamin D deficiencies in NZ children are again causing rickets. Blood levels below 50 nmol/L are considered a deficiency. We then move to sub-optimum nutrition. That is where nutrient levels are above deficiency levels but below

what is really needed. The results are not so obvious, but over time, a range of health problems emerge. Again, choosing vitamin D, sub-optimum levels increase the risk of respiratory problems, immune system disorders, learning difficulties and mental health issues, and many cancers. I consider 50–100 nmol/L is sub-optimum. Then, we have optimum levels. For vitamin D, I consider that above 100 nmol/L is ideal and means your body will have plenty of vitamin D. Adding a well-formulated multi-mineral/ vitamin/antioxidant will firstly prevent deficiencies. More importantly, it will lift nutrient levels to the point that our cells can function at their best. It is optimal function. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. WATER MATTERS Getting into hot water

by Andy Bryenton

Hot water costs in the dairy shed can top $50 a day, even for a moderately sized herd, once wash-down of the milk plant, vat and accessories are all accounted for. Here are some options to knock that down to size. Old-fashioned electric resistance elements, like the one in your kitchen kettle, work by sending a current through a metal coil that resists the flow. This resistance makes heat, and hence, your FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

water boils. It’s the second oldest way of creating hot water, after lighting a fire under a cauldron and it’s a robust if relatively expensive technology. The big question is, how to replace or augment it for the best results? How about a heat exchanger? Products exist that can transfer the heat from your excess wash-down water through to freshwater, and some even take the warmth of milk in the vat and do double duty, helping chill the milk and preheat the water at the same time. Even the most efficient of these systems will not bring cold water up to 80 degrees Celsius, but taking the water from its ground state to a middling temperature still slices away a hefty chunk of your power bill. The benefits include possible gains to the milk cooling cycle, cheap operation and simple maintenance, but these are offset by the fact that a secondary heating source is definitely still required. Heat pump technology is ubiquitous in our living rooms, but it’s only just becoming the preferred option for hot water heating. That is because early hot water heat

pumps tended to be large industrial-sized models to handle institutional laundry or commercial dishwashing, hotel showers or swimming pool heating. Smaller, more efficient units are now out there to provide an alternative for the home, and medium sized machines can assist in the milking shed to heat washdown water. The bonus? Lower power bills and greater efficiency. The only downside is a higher investment cost to install over old electric resistance elements. Heat pumps work best between 4 and 32 degrees Celsius. A heat pump unit may be driven, at least in part, by photovoltaic solar panels.

That brings us to the ultimate form of free energy, the sun. Solar hot water heating systems range from simple coils of black pipe through to advanced panels using similar technology to photovoltaic arrays, but using the sun’s power to heat cold water to near boiling point. These systems work best in direct sunlight, but pack a surprising thermal punch even on cloudy days. The bonus? Tiny operation costs, just for pumping water to the roof. The downside? These systems can be costly to install and really do require some backup when it’s cold, dreary and dark.

Water use on dairy farms has come under the microscope in recent years, and dry summers across much of the nation have done their part to make agricultural researchers seek a better method of managing water. One core area where a breakthrough was needed was in the treatment of farm dairy effluent (FDE). Washing down yards and sheds is a large water cost; 70 litres per cow a day is the accepted average. The resulting FDE is 99% water, with a load of only one per cent solid waste material. If a way could be found to recycle the water while separating the waste, massive gains could be realised. Enter a scholarly paper from 2018 by Keith C Cameron & Hong J Di. These researchers hit upon a solution; flocculation. This term means, in layman’s language, making the solid matter clump up and settle to the bottom of a tank via gravity. By using a coagulant, a substance that promotes this process, solid waste in FDE could be encouraged to ‘floc together’. To say that experiments on this idea (using polyferric sulfate, safe for human consumption) was successful is an understatement. “The new method of treating FDE was highly successful in removing the colloidal material and producing clarified water that can be recycled to wash the farmyard,” say Cameron and Di. Turbidity in the treated FDE was reduced by 97%, and the presence of

E Coli was slashed by 99%. Effectively, FDE was converted to settled, solid sediment and reusable water ready for further washdowns. Ag company Ravensdown then asked a pertinent question about turning this science into a practical system. What if FDE water could be treated and reused without fear of contamination or risk to the environment? The difference would amount to a potential total reduction in freshwater use on dairy farms of up to 42 billion litres a year. Working alongside Lincoln University, they developed a

system called Clear Tech to make this technology available to farmers. A field test at Greenpark dairy farm in the South Island delivered real-world figures; a Clear Tech system reduced freshwater consumption by 2,885,700 litres per year, recycling 66% of FDE. Could this breakthrough in science, converted to a practical system, be the future of water-saving for the dairy sector? If so, it’s a home-grown idea that could change the world.

SHOP LOCAL – SUPPORT LOCAL The recipe for a thriving town by Andy Bryenton

We now know that the shop local recipe works. Last year’s post lockdown surge didn’t just silence naysayers who predicted a lasting recession; it blew expectations of local tourism and local spending out of the water. Now we know; let’s do it again for summer. It feels odd to thank Covid and its attendant lockdowns for anything. The nasty virus has few silver linings, but one of them has got to be the newfound realisation that we can create prosperity by shopping, dining and exploring locally. The proof is in the fact that unemployment is down, tourism was up all last summer

with only Kiwis able to visit, consumer spending swung back hard, and there’s a new appreciation for local enterprise’s contribution to society. Here’s the recipe. Take a blend of vital local services and knowledge. That means a mix of trusted names who have served generations and who know their customers by name,

blended with professionals who know the local conditions and what local people want and need. Supporting local business means keeping skills, service and success in town, cutting out long commutes for specialist help and making sure competent, qualified and trusty experts are just down the street. Add a helping of community strength. The names around the goalposts and on the kids’ uniforms at sports events. The raffle prize givers, the charity supporters, the food bank shelf fillers and the names behind arts, crafts, culture and music in your town; many of them are local businesses. Supporting them helps them support the thing we love. Stir through a generous amount of finance. We’d all heard that a dollar spent locally is worth ten that go out of the area. Now we know it’s true. The people you pay become your customers, and the people you support become your supporters, keeping jobs and cash local when we think local. Put in the seeds for future success. Who will train the next generation so that there’s always a plumber, an electrician, a mechanic or engineer at your grandchildrens’ service? The businesses you support today will, and they’ll make

Big expansion for bulk supply masters by Andy Bryenton

Summer is here, and it’s high time to tackle those outdoor, construction and maintenance tasks at home or on the farm. There’s heavyduty help and some serious expertise at your disposal in Rangiotu. Since 2018, JCL Trucking has been out on the open roads of the lower North Island, using their fleet of modern trucks to deliver everything from sand and aggregate to metal for roads. With horsepower, experience and a willing attitude, company founder Rob Johnson watched demand grow. Then came an opportunity to branch out. In November, JCL Trucking went from being the people who deliver bulk supplies for construction and landscaping to the source for those products as well. Their supply yard at the corner of Pyke and Rangiotu Roads is big enough to supply the largest of projects. While the big trucks are still out there rolling for those customers, there’s an emphasis on the home and DIY customer at the new JCL Supply Yard too. People in the Horowhenua and Manawatu regions seeking aggregates, sands, composts, mulches and soils are encouraged to bring a trailer or borrow one of the courtesy trailers on offer. There’s options here for all kinds of buildings and yard maintenance tasks,

“JCL Trucking can truly say that they’ve got their customers and the wider region covered from the smallest patio to the biggest highway project.” as well as a wealth of materials for those establishing fresh garden beds, lawns and outdoor areas. It’s a timely move, as the summer is a great time to take advantage of the good weather to give your outdoors a spruce up. With this ambitious but already highlyappreciated move into the space of bulk landscaping supply, JCL Trucking can truly say that they’ve got their customers and the wider region covered from the smallest patio to the biggest highway project. The experienced team invites you to put their new facilities to the test and to remember that they are still the crew to call for moving materials in bulk. Stop by or take a look online to see just what they have to offer.

JCL Trucking has the horsepower to shift the biggest bulk loads, and now their new landscaping supply yard is the source for soils, sands, aggregates and more

Lateral thinking brings Santa home

When orange light Covid restrictions threatened to make a traditional Christmas parade a difficult ask, Palmerston North displayed some Kiwi ingenuity. On Sunday, December 5, the big red sleigh and an attendant parade rolled out to greet the crowds, not on its usual route through the central business district, but at a new venue where spectators were guaranteed a good view and a place to sit. The Kairanga Lions and the city council settled on using the CNET Arena speedway track. They had the parade follow the path usually used at much higher speed by Palmerston North’s motor racing community. Even a dash of rain didn’t deter the 2,500-strong crowd, and the track stayed dry enough for floats, classic cars and hotrods, and the fire brigade to roll past, giving everyone some festive cheer. It’s not the only way in which Manawatū’s biggest city is thinking outside the box for Christmas 2021. As well as cracking the concept of how to hold a Santa parade in the age of Covid,

the municipality has been immortalised as one of the most popular Christmas gifts of all time; the game of Monopoly. Two and a half thousand copies of the property mogul themed board game have been produced with landmarks from around ‘Palmy’, as it’s called on the box. Punters can view with their mates and relatives on Christmas day to establish a hotel on the Victoria Esplanade, snap up the civic amenities like water and electricity, or lay claim to Ashhurst Domain. For sale at the civic i-Site, half of the copies had sold out by the beginning of December. Ideas like these add to the appeal for those looking to support their local businesses at Christmas time, a rejection of the Covid cancel culture, which has seen many towns forego parades, decorations, sales and celebrations heading into the holidays. By taking a smarter look at

things, Palmerston North has proven that a little bit of ingenuity can go a long way. Now it’s up to individual shop owners to think laterally too. Many are indeed embracing the possibilities of the forthcoming summer and finding ways to thrive in the new traffic light Covid

restriction regime. At this time, it’s also up to locals to support their friends and neighbours in commerce. Reward a good attitude, some smart thinking and civic pride with your dollars. Those big chains don’t need your help, but the smaller retailers who make a town interesting do.

DAIRY AND LIVESTOCK

A brighter production outlook

by Paul Campbell

Heading into the festive season, there should be the odd cork popping in the farming sector with excellent dairy and meat prices alleviating some of the gloom around lockdown separations that are now easing as the country as a whole takes on the government’s new traffic light system. According to the ANZ Bank, the commodities price index rose 2.8 per cent in November on the month before, to be a rather significant 26.1 per cent ahead of last year. Butter and cheese lifted dairy prices by some six per cent in the same period. Global milk supplies are relatively tight, and all dairy commodities have strengthened in the past month; this trend is expected to continue into 2022. Similarly, demand for beef and lamb had sent prices to new highs. Lamb exporters are reported to be confident about markets besides ongoing problems associated with shipping costs and delays. Basically, all cuts tracked by AgriHQ have held or lifted in price in the past month. Often demand can taper off for sales beyond the Chinese New Year deadline. Lower production levels in the UK have kept both this market and mainland Europe more active than earlier in the year. The US market is looking good too, where frenched racks have almost doubled in value in only eight months. Fonterra CEO Miles Hurrell says the lift in the 2021/22 forecast farmgate milk price range is a result of continued demand for New Zealand dairy while supply tightens. The co-operative has lifted its forecast for the 2021/22 season to between $7.90 and $8.90 a kilogram of milk solids.

“The lift in the 2021/22 forecast farmgate milk price range is a result of continued demand for New Zealand dairy while supply tightens.” With expectations to reach the 2013/14 season, and would see almost $13 billion in returns to the rural accounts. Milk production is also affected by weather and high feed costs. At the same time, demand is holding up, and Fonterra is looking to move more of its milk into higher-value products, boosting profitability. “We have seen demand from China ease over the past couple of months, while other regions have stepped in to keep demand firm,” said Mr Hurrell. “On the supply side, overall global milk supply growth is forecast to track below-average levels, driven by a slowdown in US production due to the increased cost of feed.”
