Plan of action for Manawatu River and catchment

The Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.

The plan, to take effect of over the next five years, is a commitment by Iwi/hapu, local government, industry, farming, environmental and recreational leaders to over 100 collaborative actions. It builds on work achieved under the first Action Plan launched in 2011. Two Federated Farmers’ farm open days are planned as part of the celebrations around the launch. These open days will give the community a chance to experience a working farm in action and find out more about environmental initiatives underway. Community members are encouraged to pack a picnic to share with family and friends. Swimming options may also be available. Horizons Regional Council freshwater scientists will also be present at the McKellar farm to carry out some electrofishing and share information about the creatures that inhabit the catchment’s rivers and streams. At the Stewart farm, people can hear more

about a dung beetle release project underway to reduce the impact of animal effluent on water quality. Free buses will be available from The Square in Palmerston North, or people can drive themselves. Buses leave at 10.30am and return to the Square at 2.30pm on both open days. These open days are part of a full week around the launch of the new Action Plan and there are events planned throughout the catchment. An invitation will be sent out around the region listing the events in the coming weeks. The first open day will be held on March 6 from 11am at the Stewart family dairy farm in Kelvin Grove Road, Palmerston North. Fonterra supply number 44699. The following week, a second open day will be held at the McKellar family sheep and beef dairy farm ‘Woodchester’ at 222 Lees Road, Feilding. Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Prioritising the year

Blinds - Curtains

Michael Spaans is the new chair of DairyNZ, stepping into the role after John Luxton retired in October, and has outlined what he sees as the industry’s priorities for 2016. “I am just three months into my role as the new chair of DairyNZ, but seven years’ experience as a DairyNZ board member has provided me with a solid platform of knowledge to build from,” said Mr Spaans. “I am firmly focussed on taking the industry forward, but very much plan to continue the legacy of our founding chair John Luxton and building on our established reputation as a highly effective, respected and valued industry body.” He says that maintaining strong relationships across the dairy industry and the entire primary sector is his immediate priority. “Farming has become a lot more complex but the need to be competitive as well as farm responsibly remains our firm focus. “The need to support profitable farm systems has not changed, but there are more challenges, including dealing with more extreme market volatility, farming within environmental limits, consumer expectations and how we farm responsibly — in particular animal welfare standards. “The quest for talented people is a challenge we expect will become more difficult as all parts of the economy compete for the best and brightest.” He says there is a need to provide positive work environments, particularly covering health and safety aspects and also employment conditions, and the greenhouse gases is an issue that remains firmly on the DairyNZ radar. “At the same time, we need to look at these as opportunities where we can position ‘NZ dairy’ as a producer of highquality safe dairy products. “We need a strong story for our customers, but we also know they

will judge us on actions, not words and we need to be living our story as an industry and making it real for people.” DairyNZ has a key role to play, particularly through its very strategic approach to investment. The Strateg y for Sustainable Dairy Farming, also dubbed ‘Making dairy farming work for everyone’, was developed in conjunction with industry partners and with key input from farmers. “It guides the DairyNZ board on how to best invest dairy farmers’ milk solids’ levy and influence government investment. Our annual budget is now around $90 million and as a board we think very carefully and strategically how to best invest that money on behalf of farmers. A key focus for our board going forward will be to ensure we are getting the most out of those investments. “Some of our partners, including Government and Beef and Lamb New Zealand, have reduced their contributions to cofunding research and, combined with lower production and therefore less levy income, there is even more scrutiny on our investment decisions.”

T

he 19-year-old university student grew up around cattle, spending time from a young age on her grandparents Awhea Polled Hereford Stud near Kimbolton. Her grandparents, Mike and Lorraine Langtry, founded Awhea Polled Hereford Stud in 1982. They sold all their mixed-breed cattle and purchased seven in-calf registered Hereford stud cows from Waiata Stud in Eketahuna. More cows were purchased from dispersal sales and the Awhea bloodlines began to develop. Hannah said many years of success in the show-ring are reflected by the cupboards full of ribbons, and tables full of trophies in the Langtry family home.

“The major highlight during my grandparents’ time was winning the Champion of Champions title with homebred bull Awhea Arrow at the National Beef Expo in 2002.” Awhea Arrow went on to hold the national record for the highest price of $75,000 for a New Zealand-bred bull sold at auction, and purchased by a single buyer. “For us though, highlights are not all reflected by results in the show or sale ring, they are by far measured by the connections and loyalty with fellow breeders and buyers — that year in and year out continue to support us.” Hannah’s early introduction to cattle

Donor cow, Awhea Curly 005, in recent embryo programme began when she was still in a pushchair taken around various shows, bull sales and stockyards on the farm. As she grew older she began to help at the shows and enjoyed being the right-hand-girl on the farm during the school holidays. “I always had a fascination with the animals and farming, and of course being a big girl out on the farm with Granddad.” When Mike and Lorraine decided to disperse the stud five years ago, they gifted Hannah a heifer calf to go forward with. Hannah’s involvement became a lot more hands-on when the stud was dispersed. “I was finally at an age where I could put forward my own thoughts

and could start showing cattle more independently. I was also at an age where it became something I really wanted to make a go of, and commit to.” Hannah and her younger cousin, Sophie Langtry, now share the entire stud operation. “It’s a joint venture with Granddad as our mentor,” said Hannah. The cattle continue to graze on the Kimbolton farm while Hannah is studying towards a Bachelor of AgriScience at Massey University. Sophie attends Feilding High School. “In the future I definitely plan on leasing, ideally buying, my own patch of dirt and running them there, but while Soph and I are preoccupied

with studying it is a godsend to have Granddad watching and managing them for us.” said Hannah. Hannah said she is 110 percent involved with the day-to-day running of the farm and everything that involves the cattle. “It takes something big to stop me from being at the farm for calving or drenching.” The stud takes its name from the Awhea River which ran alongside the original farm at Tora on the Wairarapa coastline. Hannah said Awhea roughly translates to the river hugging the farm and winding out to meet the sea. “Granddad liked this translation and that’s where Awhea stuck.” The Kimbolton farm, where the stud is now, covers 200 acres of rolling country.

Hannah has no intentions of changing the stud name. “It is an honour and a privilege to continue using the Awhea prefix, not to mention utilising the recognition it has gained in the last 30 years.” Mike and Lorraine recently made the decision to downsize to a retirement block of 30 acres closer to Feilding. Hannah said the block is the perfect size to keep the stud cattle ticking along until she has finished her studies and ready to take the next step up. “I will forever have a love for the red and whites. “Their docility and gentle nature makes them so easy to work with, I have grown up with them and am so lucky to work with them as not only a hobby, but a lifestyle.” she said.

His oldest tractor, a 1926 Hart-Parr, was found in a Hawke’s Bay sawmill. The Hart-Parr company was founded by Charles W Hart and Charles H Parr in Wisconsin, United States in 1897, and was the first to successfully manufacture internal combustion engine-powered tractors with the original 1902 HartParr model. The business was moved to Iowa in 1905. Some of Ian’s favourites include a Lanz tractor from Christchurch, a baler from Ashburton and a JD 402C crawler from Balfour. Ian with his Allis Chalmers tractor 1900s Syracuse, single-horse handheld plough. The Syracuse Chilled Plow Company, originally known as the Robinson Company, manufactured ploughs, beams, harrows, cultivators and other farm implements from its New York state base in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The company was later bought by the John Deere Company. After visiting a few John Deere tractor shows, Ian imported a John Deere 520. He uses some of his vintage tractors and machinery on the farm. Ian has lived on the same farm near Rongotea all his life, initially running sheep and grazing dairy cattle. He and his wife Valerie decided to convert to dairying shortly after they married.

Ian’s oldest tractor — a 1926 Hart-Parr

The couple are currently milking 130 registered Jersey cows on their 100 hectare property. “We also run a bit of beef and grow a little bit of barley,” said Ian. “We still have a few sheep.” Ian said the farm is self-contained so they don’t buy in any feed. “All the tucker’s on the place,” he said. As a keen ploughing enthusiast for many years, Ian started ploughing with friends in the 1980s then began competing in local vintage ploughing matches. Since then Ian has competed in ploughing matches around the North Island, has also made a few trips to South Island competitions, and qualified

for several New Zealand Ploughing Championships. He prefers to use his Allis Chalmers tractor in competition. “It’s easy to drive, fits on the trailer and is light enough to transport,” he said. This year’s New Zealand Ploughing Championships will be hosted by the Manawatu Ploughing Match Association from April 16-17. The championships will cover four different classes; conventional, reversible, vintage and horse ploughing. Ian has been a member of the Manawatu Ploughing Match Association for a couple of years. He is on the organising committee for the championships and will also be competing in the vintage ploughing section.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

ADVERTORIAL

Programme to paradise There is a vast difference between a natural nutrient found in a food or plant and its synthetic counterpart artificially created in a lab. Each new year brings the opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution and if farming is in your blood, the best call you could make for 2016 and into the future is to bring Mother Nature back onto your farm; together with all the wonderful free natural capital she provides for better production, a better environment and a wholesome life, for you and your family. Farming has always been a natural process; you take a natural man, a natural woman, natural animals and if they are ruminant animals you feed them natural grass, on naturally good soil, with plenty of natural sunshine, natural water, natural micro-organisms, natural minerals and natural worms. This is a good natural formula. When you take this brave new step, in my experience, the first good feeling you will have is freedom; freedom from the chemical treadmill. The next good

thought will be you and Mother Nature are working together, for a better future for all. Rather than bombarding your farm with nitrates, phosphate and potentially harmful chemicals, Agrissentials will set you up with multi-mineral, microbial-rich fertilisers, bringing health and vitality back to your soil. Mother Nature’s formula for growing a plant is minerals, microbes, water and sunshine plus you need those 16 essential minerals, to get the job done. Agrissentials have all those minerals in a completely natural form. That means we know they are plant available and thus unlike their synthetic counterparts we know they will be taken up by the plant, which then passes them onto the animal or human, promoting optimum health. The microbes are the first creatures to dine at the mineral table, converting the natural minerals from the rock dust,

fish and seaweed, into a plant available form, wrapping the minerals in humus, so they don’t leach from the soil. The plant roots take up the minerals from the humus when required — humus also holds water for the plant to uptake, ensuring good water retention quality in your soil to help through those dry periods. This is the natural system of mineral release to the plant. It is the ultimate system and is recognised immediately at the cellular level of the plant for uptake and good healthy growth. This system has been operating for 460 million years — it is the tried and true system! When we look at the planet’s natural forests, natural jungles, natural savannahs and the oldest farm in the world, the Serengeti Plains, we see that most of their essential mineral uptake is sourced directly from the atmosphere i.e. 45 percent carbon, as carbon dioxide, 45 percent oxygen, 6 percent hydrogen and 1.5 percent nitrogen all freely available directly and also via microbial activity. All other essential minerals come from animal and bird manures, recycling of vegetation and other mineral sources, such as eroded rock dust. In the natural system, minerals are converted and stored in the organic matter (humus) for uptake, on request. You cannot get a better soil fertility programme than this.

For artificial nitrogen/urea junkies, the atmosphere we live and breathe in is 76 percent natural nitrogen, approximately 33,000 tonnes of it, per hectare. There is no cost factor to this supply of nitrogen. It is made readily available to plants via the micro-organisms and is stored in the organic matter (humus) of the soil, ready for uptake by the plant, on demand. Plus being completely natural it does not adversely affect the environment or your pocket! A farmer we know, who is running two reasonably sized dairy farms and spreading urea, could quite easily purchase a new Haines Hunter 6m runabout with all the bells and whistles including a trailer, every year, just by accessing his nitrogen requirements free, straight out of the atmosphere. How great would that be?! Team Agrissentials wishes everybody throughout NZ a happy and prosperous 2016. Our team is looking to working alongside you this year to ensure your success. Freephone 0800 THE KEY that’s 0800 843 539 today for a FREE INFO PACK to find out how you can reap the benefits from working with nature without compromising on production or you can contact your friendly representative Ben Tippins on 021 738 601. Getting it right on time Agri-tech company, Agrimap, has launched a real-time digital time sheet to give farmers a simple solution to a long-term, pressing issue. Agri360 is cloud based software that makes it easier for farmers around the globe to collect, retrieve and share farm data in real time all stored in the one secure place that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. The timesheets component allows employees to log in and record their hours worked with the employer able to approve the hours worked in an easy to locate timeline format. Agri360 timesheets are about making it easy to manage staff hours with increased scrutiny by the MBIE for employee time and wage recording within the farming industry. Lack of rigorous time keeping measures has led to some workers being paid less than minimum wage due to sporadic hours and averaging taking place. Andrew Hoggard, Dairy Industry Group chair for Federated Farmers says there is a need for an adequate solution for farmers in New Zealand. “Farmers are now running larger business operations with multiple employees, which demands more progressive time and wage recording practices. “Due to the increasing number of employees on farms nowadays

farmers need to ensure they are making accurate time records that will benefit both themselves in terms of compliance, and their employees in terms of health and safety.” CEO and founder of Agrimap, Andy Lowe says “an easy to use digital solution is the obvious answer for these issues.” Many farmers have described paper timesheets as a hassle. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

is what farmers say when we show them this photo of an effluent pond.

“You never see the sky reflected in an effluent pond.“ This reaction is understandable. The farmers we talk to are smart, using expensive machines to break and stir and separate the crust. But despite their efforts, they never get results that look anything like the photo we show them. The photo is real and not enhanced in any way. But how is this clear, free-flowing effluent possible? FIGHTING THE WRONG BATTLE: Though farmers battle against pond crust and sludge, these solids are merely symptoms of the real problem. The cause of the crust are microscopic creatures that live below the surface – ANAEROBIC BACTERIA. Anaerobic Bacteria are microbes that thrive in an atmosphere that is dark and

15

At Site 02 Central Districts Field Days

devoid of oxygen. To create these conditions, Anaerobic Bacteria send effluent fibers to the pond’s surface to form a crust that blocks the light and oxygen that threaten their existence. To create a clean and clear pond (like the photo), you have to defeat these crust-causing Anaerobic Bacteria. The Browns of Pirongia did that by introducing counteractive bugs into their pond. SLURRY BUGS are Aerobic Bacteria that need light and oxygen. When introduced to an effluent pond, they eat the crust to allow light and oxygen into their environment. Within weeks, the pond is clear of solids, leaving a liquefied effluent that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus and is easily pumped. THE COST? About 1/10th the cost of a machine-based system. Sound like bullsh*t? It’s not – it’s just better science in action.

Stapl-it and Strip-it makes fencing easier Taranaki inventor Barry Davis came up with the idea for an easy-to-use fencing stapler and staple puller after fencing with his brother-in-law. Barry’s wife Tracy said it was a cold, miserable day of hard, physical work and the two men thought there had to be an easier way to fence. Barry went home, put his farming and engineering skills to work and came up with ‘The Stapl-it’. The Stapl-it makes an easy job of putting battens on fences using a simple lever action to staple instead of banging them in with a hammer. Barry said it’s an ideal tool for anyone doing fencing on their own. Another invention, ‘The Strip-it’, followed soon afterwards. Designed to grasp fencing wire, The Strip-it makes removing staples effortless, again using a simple lever action. The couple showcased The Staplit and The Strip-it in the Grassroots

Invention section at the National Field Days in 2013. The following year, the couple launched the products for sale. “They were sold out within two and a half days,” said Tracy. Barry, Tracy and their two daughters are all involved in the B. & T. Davis Family Trust business. “It’s most definitely a team effort, we manufacture, assemble and sell it ourselves.” said Tracy. Tracy said she enjoys watching the reaction on people’s faces when the product is being demonstrated. “They smile and laugh and can’t believe it can be that easy. It’s robust, simple and quick.” The Stapl-it and The Strip-it will be demonstrated from site K40D at this year’s Central Districts Field Days.

Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long term protection. Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of

corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and loaders chassis. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. The Packo range of cooling equipment delivers the vital fast, efficient temperature drop required and keeps the milk at optimum storage conditions ready for collection. Once cooled, technology is available to allow monitoring of the whole process and provide the traceability required by many of today’s milk buyers.

Soil Matters with Peter Burton

How magnesium deficiencies can be sorted Some things change over time, and others don’t, with one certainty being the daily demand for magnesium by dairy cows, particularly prior to calving.

Annual lesion incidence (%)

Without adequate daily intake of magnesium a wide range of health problems occur — at one end of the scale lower milk solid production, at the other end unnecessary deaths. The factor most mentioned, however, is the time wasted in spring dealing with sick animals, and the sense of frustration that arises from having followed best advice, and yet the problems persist. There are, however, a growing number of farmers for whom these issues simply don’t exist. For them an animal requiring treatment is worthy of note because it’s a rare occurrence, and they operate properties where Golden Bay dolomite is applied once a year, usually in autumn. Although it is true that older

animals, particularly if they are a Jersey or have a Jersey background, are more likely to suffer, our experience is that even purebred Jersey herds on such pasture have a similarly low incidence of metabolic disorders in spring. Weather conditions also play a major role in calcium/magnesium related problems. Leaf magnesium concentrations vary, being highest in periods of direct sunlight. At these times the leaf content of pasture grasses may be as high as 0.25%, and animals fed well on this feed are receiving sufficient magnesium each day. Magnesium concentrations decline in periods of wet, cold weather. Animals may eat less and, if another source of

Hay contains the fibre essential for good rumen function, as well as useful energy and oils contained in the seed. As one farmer recently stated, “No matter how good the salad is, it’s great to have some bread and pastry.” And where hay is made available, animals only eat sufficient to meet their requirements at that time. Another reason for the effectiveness of dolomite spread at 220kg/ha in autumn is the calcium that is also applied. Calcium/magnesium related metabolics are nearly always the result of an imbalance of the two elements, and because dolomite contains both in the ratio required by grasses its effect is extraordinary. There is also the obvious advantage of receiving magnesium in every mouthful of feed rather than relying on it being provided via the water system, or as dust on the leaf of a plant. As Professor Tom Walker wrote, “It makes good sense to me to correct animal deficiencies through the soil and the plant.” When bulk deliveries of dolomite direct to farm started twenty-six years ago, most went to what were large herds at the time, those of over three

hundred cows, as even on highly magnesium deficient country a single autumn application over the whole property markedly reduced the incidence of problems, reducing the reliance on variable intakes from dusting or water in troughs. A further advantage of dolomite is the pH or ‘liming’ effect. Dolomite contains 11.5% magnesium and 24% calcium, and has a slightly higher liming effect than the same quantity of lime. 28 tonnes of dolomite has the liming effect of approximately 30 tonnes of high quality agricultural lime. It is available throughout the country and, if not already in stock at the major companies, it can be delivered in whatever quantity is required within a matter of days. It may be added to a non-nitrogen fertiliser mix or spread separately with a typical truck and trailer load sufficient for 127ha. There are those that state that dolomite is expensive. When higher production and less deaths are factored in, dolomite is one of the few fertiliser products that provides an almost immediate financial benefit. However the most satisfying aspect may be the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your valuable animals are receiving the benefits from the most effective magnesium fertiliser available and which is locally sourced. Last month I was talking about the importance of preventative hoof trimming. This month I would like to go through the three steps of preventative hoof trimming, also known as functional hoof trimming.

The aim is to have the cow standing correctly on the ground. If the toe is too long the cow will lean back on her heel. The claws also need to be flat to give more stability, especially the inner claw, as once the hoof is trimmed correctly, the weight will be distributed evenly across both claws. Yet many inner claws are concaved and will ‘fall over’. I often use the analogy of ladies who walk on high heels. Some of those heels are as thin as my little finger. How come they can still walk in those shoes and not fall over? Because they have the stability in the toe, it is just the same with our cows. The toe needs to be flat for stability, the heel gives height. Therefore we want both claws to be the same height in order to distribute the weight of the cow equally over the two claws. Step one: We start on the inner claw. This is the smallest of the two claws and the closest in shape and size to what we want to achieve. Once we have trimmed the inner claw we use it as an example for the outer claw to make it the same. The length of the claw is crucial. It needs to be 7.5cm in length. A small cow can be slightly shorter but you would be best to stick with the 7.5cm. Once you have cut the claw at the right length, the thickness of the cut is the thickness of the sole on the toe part of that claw. The toe needs to be 7mm thick but the heel needs to be left as high as possible. The more you take off the heel area on the inner claw the more you will have to take off the outer claw to match the inner claw later. Step two: Once you have finished the inner claw you can do the same on the outer claw — cut the claw to 7.5 cm and make the toe 7mm thick. This time you need to trim the whole claw down

to the same height as the inner claw. Make sure the claws are flat. If the claw is uneven the cow will feel like she is walking on a rocking horse. Now that the claws are balanced, they will bear the weight evenly across both claws. Step three: All we need to do now is scallop out the inside of the claw, being careful not to go too far forward. And that is what preventative hoof trimming is about. Every cow should be

trimmed in this way whether she is lame or not. For lame cows there are another two steps in the process but only after those three steps have been completed. Learning to trim like this really should be done under supervision of a tutor. If you are keen to get better at trimming just give us a call on 0800 833 463 to find out when our next training courses are or visit our website www. veehof.co.nz.

RURAL WHEELS

Automotive excellence by Andy Bryenton

After what has been a stellar year for new vehicle sales the figures are in, and the motoring public have voted both with their approval and with their wallets to choose the top machines of 2015. That popular forum of automotive excellence, the New Zealand Automobile Association Car of the Year awards, has turned up some interesting trends, with its top picks going to a few bold choices. Ahead of the pack and taking out the crown of top car for the past year is the diminutive, electrically powered BMW i3 — an indication that the reign of internal combustion is being challenged by new technologies. It’s all petrol and diesel in the rest of the order though, with some surprises in store. Hyundai delivered a one-two blow, with their Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs scooping back to back small and large off-roader accolades. The new Mazda MX5 was a lock for best sports car. And the prestigious luxury car category went not to a Teutonic or American marque, but to the Hyundai Genesis. The statistics from the forecourts of New Zealand tell another story though — one which is borne out by another year at the top of the AA’s polls for the evergreen Ford

The Ford Ranger — winning again in 2015, both in accolades and sales figures

Ranger. The big ute with the four-year winning streak has not only cinched the title of best utility again for 2015 — it’s also been the best selling vehicle of any class. That means more Rangers took to the highway than any other kind of car, van, truck or motorcycle last year

With a cosmetic re-design and new features for 2016, the Ranger continues to go from strength to strength, and figures are sure to look rosy for the new year coming into Field Days. Can the feisty Ford make it five in a row this year? Only time will tell.

— toppling the long term favourite, the Toyota Corolla. Opponents of the big blue juggernaut which is Ford’s flagship ute must be asking themselves how the runaway success of the Ranger can ever be superseded.

LIFESTYLE BLOCK SERVICES

The importance of irrigation Having a good irrigation system can make a big difference to your farm or lifestyle block and can even benefit the wider community. Pastures are more productive when properly irrigated and maintained which means more feed, fewer breakdowns occur, and systems are simpler to manage. Applying the correct amount of water at the right time will allow for maximum growth of the pasture and decrease the likelihood of putting stress on the pastures therefore slowing the growth. It is equally important to make sure that too much water is not being used as this will draw out valuable nutrients which are expensive. Maintaining the irrigation system is important to avoid breakdowns and leaks. Leaks can reduce the operating pressure meaning the system will not apply water evenly, leading to patchy crops. Watering tracks and other non-productive areas wastes water with no returns. For areas and seasons where water is scarce, remember to allow for water restrictions and make a list of the areas that are a priority. Plan ahead so these do not impact too much on production. Of course the person responsible for the irrigation system must comply with all rules and conditions set by the governing organisations of the water supply such as the regional council or the irrigation scheme. With new demands on water nationally and regionally due to new technology improving the way most farmers use irrigation, being aware of

the most water efficient processes is essential and will save both time and money in the long run. From centre pivots to border dyke and rotary boom the system must maximise the amount of dry matter grown whilst minimising the amount of water expended.
