Farmers urged to watch for yellow bristle grass

The annual summer grass which is thought to originate from China, is now widespread in Europe, the United States, Africa, and Australia. Although first observed in New Zealand in 1905, it wasn’t until the 1990s that yellow bristle grass was noticed spreading along roadsides. More recently it has reached pastures. Horizons’ environmental programme co-ordinator plant security Craig Davey said the grass is already affecting farming in Waikato and is easily transferred from roadside infestations via stock movement and infested hay. In the past few years it has become more widespread in Taranaki and it likely to have been present in the Horizons’ region for decades. It is known to exist along the state highway network and beyond. “Like a lot of weeds, yellow bristle grass is quick to colonise bare ground. Hot, dry conditions, poor machinery hygiene practices and spraying to bare earth can all exacerbate its spread,” said Mr Davey. “Once established, it is a prolific seeder and becomes dominant in a paddock within a few years. “While stock will eat it in its vegetative stage, the grass has poor nutritive value and stock avoid it after seed heads emerge in early January to March. There’s also evidence that the distinctive seed heads can cause lesions and ulcers to the mouths of “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

grazing cattle. “With this in mind, it’s worth checking areas of paddocks not utilised by stock for signs of yellow bristle grass.” The grass can be difficult to identify until it produces a seed head. In open pasture its first leaves tend to be parallel to the ground. They are yellowgreen to green in colour and usually red or purple at the base. On highly productive dairy farms where yellow bristle grass is prolific, annual feed production may be reduced by up to 20 percent resulting in increased on-farm costs due to the need for supplementary feed and/or pasture renovation. The result is estimated to be a cost of about $1,100/ha. Mr Davey encourages farmers to check out the distribution map on Horizons’ website as well as information on identification and control options. “The best control is prevention — have as much other vegetation in place as possible and, in disturbed areas, instigate spraying as soon as possible,” he said.

The farmer-owned cooperative LIC has secured a new strategic partnership with Israel-based cow monitoring and milking intelligence solutions company, SCR. The par tnership includes a distribution agreement whereby SCR, will distribute the co-op’s DAL milking sensors internationally and LIC will become a New Zealand distributor for SCR’s cow reproduction and health monitoring system, Heatime®. SCR, headquartered in Netanya, Israel, is a world leader in development, manufacturing and marketing of cow, milking and herd intelligence solutions, with US and European subsidiaries, sales offices in China and more than 330 employees. LIC chief executive Wayne McNee says the partnership is part of the co-op’s strategy to grow the business overseas and provide New Zealand dairy farmers with more choice. “SCR is a world-leading provider of cow intelligence systems with a strong history of delivering solutions to improve farm efficiency worldwide. This agreement aligns with our vision to improve the prosperity and productivity of our farmers, and our focus on key international markets that will add value for shareholders in New Zealand. “DAL sensors are highly regarded here in New Zealand for their unique ability to measure a range of factors (milk volume, fat, protein, lactose, and somatic cell counts) while a cow is being milked. This partnership confirms the global demand for the value the sensors deliver on-farm, and ability to meet the needs of farmers worldwide. “The SCR Heatime system will be a valuable addition to our range of herd improvement and animal management solutions here in New Zealand,” Mr McNee said. LIC and SCR have identified four initial markets for distribution of the DAL meters, with the potential to add more in the future. SCR’s Heatime will be available to all New Zealand dairy

Heatime collects and analyses critical data points, from activity to rumination, on every individual cow, delivering the heat, health and nutrition insight to improve accuracy and drive overall farm efficiency. Shane McManaway, general manager Allflex Australasia said it is exciting news for NZ dairy farmers. “When three of the world’s leaders in their respective fields join forces it provides synergies and opportunities not seen before. Allflex is very excited to be partnering with LIC.” Yariv Avisar, SCR chief executive, says the partnership will support growth in both global businesses. “It is our vision to secure dairy farming’s future by monitoring every cow. Dream job FOR

young farmer by Denise Gunn

Megan Bates landed her dream job when she took on the Taranaki/Manawatu field officer position with New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) in October.

I

t’s a job where she can combine her agricultural background, teaching qualifications and experience, along with her passion for the organisation. Growing up on a Taranaki dairy farm gave Megan a well-rounded knowledge

of the daily routine required to keep a large operation running smoothly. When her parents relocated to a dairy farm south of Palmerston North, Megan joined them as soon as she completed her secondary education at a boarding

And it was during her tertiary studies that she joined a local Young Farmers club to meet new people. “I have always been a member of the Opiki Young Farmers Club and they hold a special place in my heart,” said Megan. She held the secretary’s position in the Opiki Young Farmers Club for several years, taking care of the administration work and organising activities for members. Now as the Taranaki/Manawatu field officer, Megan visits and supports 13 Young Farmers clubs in the region by providing tools to help them run

I really like meeting new people that have like-minded goals as far as industry promotion effectively. From her Manawatu base she travels to Taranaki, Ruapehu and Wellington. Megan likes to see what makes each club unique and meeting many different people. “I really like meeting new people that have like-minded goals as far as industry promotion,” she said. Megan’s field officer position also involves youth development with AgriKids

Megan with Opiki Young

During her spare time Megan likes to work on the farm and TeenAg programmes, organising Get Ahead Education days, attending district and regional competitions, and any other additional activities. TeenAg has grown rapidly since its introduction in 2009 with over 650 club members throughout New Zealand. “I love the enthusiasm that the primary and secondary students have,” said Megan. “It gives you a real buzz to see them enjoying activities based around the industry.” Megan’s teaching background has helped her immensely with her new position. “I have been implementing some of the ideas and resources that

NZYF had created at the school I was teaching at. “I had a good knowledge of the organisation, was passionate and had ideas about where we could head in the future with AgriKids, TeenAg and Young Farmers Clubs.” When Megan’s working day for Young Farmers is completed, her gumboots are kept handy as she helps her partner out on a dairy grazing unit he runs. “During my spare time I like to be on the farm,” she said. “There is always something to do.” However, despite a busy work and farm schedule, Megan still finds time to enjoy her interests which includes keeping fit

and healthy, and attending early morning boot camps. “I also love the outdoors and like to go walking, hunting, diving, and go to the beach as much as I can.” Megan has found the Young Farmers organisation to be a great way to meet people and join in exciting activities and members don’t have to

YOUNG PUP LEADS

s Paul initially began training the young Huntaway dog he named Wag, his neighbour continued to take a keen interest in the progress of the pup, helping Paul with some of the finer points of sheep dog training. He also encouraged Paul to take Wag along to local dog trials. “He was a big help but probably got very frustrated with me,” said Paul. However perseverance and training paid off when Paul and Wag competed at the 2008 New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association Championships. The pair made the run-off then placed fourth in the final of the Straight Hunt. At last year’s New Zealand Sheep Dog Championships held in Geraldine, Paul qualified with three heading dogs. This time is was his heading dog Bryte that came up with the goods, gaining a fifth place in the Short Head and Yard.

Ann and Paul Evans on their 350ha hill country farm near Ohingaiti Paul and his wife Ann run sheep and beef on their 350ha property near Ohingaiti, with a particular focus on their Perendale and Romeldale sheep stud, Mapari. Their rams are sought after by many leading studs around New Zealand. The couple place special emphasis on breeding sound, meaty sheep with fast growth, and particular attention is paid to weaning weight and early growth before the lamb’s first winter. In the 15 years since Paul first began dog trialling, he has successfully bred

and trained his own dogs, as well as buying a few pups here and there. He said time and patience are the main keys to training dogs. “It takes a lot of time and repetition. “Training dogs for dog trials is basically no different to training your dog for general farm work — it just requires more finesse and fine-tuning.” When selecting a pup from a litter, Paul looks for one he considers would work well for him. He finds it satisfying to rear a pup, break it in and then compete.

BRANDERSON HOMES LTD PRE BUILT HOMES

Paul began dog trialling 15 years ago “I’d rather start from scratch,” he said “Out on the dog trial course, it’s just you, your dog and the sheep.” In his role as president of the Wanganui Centre and secretary of his local Ohingaiti Club, Paul helps with both the committee work and organisation of dog trials. “It’s a way of contributing back to the sport,” he said. Competing in dog trials takes Paul all over the North Island most weekends during the February to May season. He tries to support each of the dog trials held by the 12 clubs within the Wanganui Centre, and occasionally ventures over Cook Strait to compete in the South Island. The New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Association is made up of eight centres in the North Island and five in the South Island. Paul has found the comradeship between competitors at dog trials to be

a huge highlight of the sport. Talking to others involved in the sport and taking part in training days has also been an invaluable tool to further develop Paul’s knowledge. “There are training days organised to help not only for dog trials but for everyday work,” he said. In the lead-up to this year’s New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Championships at Moawhango, east of Taihape, Paul is particularly busy with the organisation of the event. In his role as Wanganui president, Paul is responsible for the smooth running of the championships. The championships, which are expected to draw competitors from North Cape to Bluff, will run from May 25–30. All competitors must qualify during the season to be able to attend. “There will be roughly 1,000 runs with up to 350 competitors,” said Paul.

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening

your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™. For Septi-Cure™ – Call: 0800 109 202 Website: www.ecoworld.co.nz Also available at

A century since Gallipoli is a time of remembrance for tens of thousands of New Zealanders and memories abounded on a recent trip to France.

BACK TO THE

A

visit to those battlefields of long ago is relatively easy today, compared to the huge journey of early last century. It was a case of booking aboard Singapore Airlines from Auckland, in the winter months when sunny skies in Europe were a better prospect than winter chills at home. The giant A380 would have flabbergasted my own grandfather, who fortunately returned from the fighting

in France, and we dined well, were entertained with myriad channels, and sped on after a brief transit in Singapore to collect a rental car from Renault Euro Drive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. The soft tones of ‘Charlotte’ as we christened the husky voice of our onboard GPS device, made finding our way to northern France a breeze. That afternoon we were in Le Quesnoy, liberated from occupying German troops by New Zealanders on November 4, 1918. And it was raining! The town is a mediaeval walled city, albeit with modern road openings. We found a parking space in the central cobbled square, and set about exploring. The first sign of Kiwi provenance came with the street named ‘Rue de Helen Clarke,’ commemorating a visit by the former PM.

Largest Selection of Jars & Bottles in NZ Farmers markets are springing up across the country, and with them has come a revival in bottling of fruits and vegetables. Arthur Holmes Ltd is a family firm which this year celebrates 104 years in business, wholesalers of New Zealand’s largest range of glass and plastic jars and bottles for food, oil, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, scientific, herbal and homeopathic businesses, and all types of cottage industries. “We specialise in supplying small quantities of quality jars and bottles and their respective closures, says managing director, Rick Holmes. “Additional closures can be ordered

individually, and there’s no minimum purchase requirement. “Preserving jars and bottles are our mainstay and these have had a marked increase in sales in recent years. Many of our customers now sell in the frequent weekend farmers’ markets. “Today preserving is so much easier. Gone are the days of seals and bands. The modern cap now has a built-in rubber compound which when hot filled creates a vacuum once it has cooled, the twist finish allows the cap to be opened by braking the vacuum.” Arthur Holmes Ltd supplies over 20,000 customers.

Le Quesnoy. Central parking is easy in the cobbled town square Back in the first great war the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade surrounded the town, to keep the German occupiers contained. What followed was one of the Kiwi troops most spectacular exploits of the war. They scaled the ramparts at night and took on the Germans. Surprise was complete and the defenders quickly surrendered. The townspeople were overjoyed and Le Quesnoy has forged strong links New Zealand. The town has one of four New Zealand battlefield memorials on the Western Front. The others are at Graventafel and Mesen/ Messines in Belgium, and Longueval in France.

On our visit, we made our way to the information centre on the town’s eastern side. As luck would have it, it was closed for a holiday so we fell back on advice from some friendly locals. (A note here for travellers following in our footsteps to check the French holiday calendar.) In the nearby Jardin du Souvenir, or Garden of Remembrance, reached easily through a (rather dilapidated) short tunnel in the ramparts is the New Zealand battlefield memorial. Set into the rampart, above a now empty moat, is a relief carving showing soldiers scaling the walls. On our visit, it was enlightening to see a class of

French schoolchildren listening to their teacher’s hands-on history lesson. On their tour of France in 2000, the All Blacks visited Le Quesnoy and they led a parade to the memorial where wreaths were laid. On a more sombre note, to the north of the town is Le Quesnoy Cemetery. Most of the 50 New Zealanders buried here lost their lives on November 4, 1918, just one week before the armistice. Perhaps though, the most abiding memory of Le Quesnoy was the friendly handshake in a local cafe from a passing townsman, who simply said, “Nouvelle Zealadais? Tres bon, tres bon,” before continuing on his way.

New Year, new markets, new thinking

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Volatility in the market is making it tough for everyone but at least we are not living in a warzone and we will make it through once again. This volatility is teaching us a better way, making us more resilient, more conservative plus strengthening our business skills. As food producers, New Zealand is in a good market. People need food, and our soils, climate and isolation are strong factors for us to operate from. I have been down the natural track for 30 years now and over the past ten years I have recognised an increasing demand for food produced in a safe, certified, nutritiously dense manner as people all over the globe become more concerned about their health and what they are eating. This is the new market and it is a market that will continue to grow. To produce food to qualify for this market is simple. It’s all about changing the soil — change the soil and you change the quality of the food — it is that simple. The change to remineralise our soils and protect our environment is already here. Agrissentials’ focus is on the soil. Get the soil right and all life above the soil, plants, animals and people will be right. Agrissentials’ live, living multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers are designed to bring health and vitality back to soils and back to the environment.

With the new consumer markets out there crying out for safe, certified nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable way, New Zealand is ideally positioned to take a strong lead in producing top quality food for this growing demand. We have the soil, the climate, the water and the people to do it and we are renowned for our agriculture and horticulture. Before chemicals got a grip on our production methods we were world leaders in economic food production, innovation and enterprise. Today’s chemical methods have tied us into the commodity markets where we are competing against other big commodity suppliers. I believe that it is time to change our methods of production by working with nature — increasing the depth, microbial life and mineral content of the top soil. This in turn will increase soil carbon, soil water retention, and soil drainage capacity, increasing production and producing better quality food. Such a move would take us away from the commodity markets and their volatile systems which are unstable, unpredictable and difficult to budget around. When you see the likes of Tatua

A northland customer (left) showing the effects of using Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers during the dry period

Dairy paying out $10.30 per milk solid there is definitely strong opportunities in the marketplace for value added quality food. Agrissentials’ certified natural system of soil fertility can open up opportunities to help you produce top quality, certified produce with our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers designed to bring health and vitality back to the soil. Get the soil right and the rest of the system falls into

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

by Denise Gunn

Following on from the successful introduction of Plunket’s family zone at the 2014 Central Districts Field Days, a larger area is planned for this year. Plunket events coordinator Kylie Gibbard said the service was so well utilised that the family zone, with the support of CB Norwoods, will cover two sites at this year’s field days to accommodate the demand. Baby-changing facilities, a breast-feeding area, and a fenced play area to give older children a chance to stretch their legs and run around will be found on-site. Kylie said a private space with a couple of lounge chairs are to be specially set up for mothers to breastfeed their babies. “It’s a nice, discreet area for mums to relax in.” Plunket’s car seat service staff will be available to advise the correct installation and use of child restraints. A range of car seats and boosters can be bought or hired from Plunket branches throughout New Zealand. The community services team will also be on-site to answer questions and give advice on playgroups, parent education sessions and programmes. Plunket offers free education programmes for parents which are available nationwide. The Parenting Education Programme consists of five courses aimed to support parents through their child’s early developmental stages as well as one off topics including the popular Plunket’s family zone and big, blue bear will return to the field first aid for babies and toddlers’ sessions. The Parents as First Teachers programme assists parents with practical support and guidance to help their child reach their full potential. “There will also be a Plunket nurse or a Plunket health worker available for advice or support” said Kylie. Lanolin based lubricant solves corrosion issues The aggressive nature of agricultural fertilisers, manure and other environmental factors has a high impact on the corrosion of machinery including the chassis of quad bikes, vehicles, ground spreading machinery and handling equipment, machinery and tools. As we know this equipment is expensive and can rust out within five years with no protection. Prolan provides a solution — it is an environmentally friendly lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin. Prolan’s key advantage is its ability to stay on for long periods once applied. Prolan Lanolin lubricants and grease lubes have a natural affinity for all metal surfaces. They penetrate and protect your assets by forming a natural barrier that prevents corrosive agents penetrating the surface. Prolan lubricants resist being washed off surfaces,

providing the ultimate protection in extreme environments. Prolan products are very versatile and have a large range of applications they have been used successfully on quad bike and vehicle chassis, boat trailers, motors, marinas and engineering workshops to name a few. A number of fertiliser companies around New Zealand have used Prolan to coat loaders internally and underneath. The machine can still be washed with a water blaster and the protective coating will still remain. The product can be easily applied through a spray or undersealing gun. New to the market this year and promoted at the Field Days is the Prolan Anti-seize grease tube. This tube is a must for any maintenance toolbox and is easy to slip into the pocket. This grease provides a natural long-lasting barrier once applied to threads, bolts, pins, bushes, pumps, rubber seals,

Choosing the right pumps and filters Have you ever been confused when buying pumps and filter systems by all the jargon, too afraid to ask, or have no idea what you just parted with a lot of money for? operate at the maximum for long without damage. There are many inexpensive water filters and you should buy NSF grade filters and housings which are internationally tested for use with drinking water. Non NSF filters may leach chemicals into your water, do little actual filtration, and can disintegrate as water passes through and you are ingesting freshly introduced

contaminants! Filter housings should also be BPA Free ensuring the plastic is high quality, will withstand years of use, and not leach nasty chemicals into your water. In most cases, you should be able to maintain and clean your filter system yourself and change consumables as easily as doing the dishes! No need to use chemicals or enter costly service contracts.

It isn’t just a case of one size fits all. Like any mechanical or technical product there are a few terms and calculations needed. But understanding what you are buying shouldn’t require you to have a degree in engineering! Keeping it simple — what pressure do you need at the tap so you don’t need to run around in the shower to get wet? Generally pressure is expressed in metres head. Distances from source to tank, to pump, and to tap outlet are needed to calculate this. Another term, friction loss is the pressure lost as the water travels through the pipe, so you need to know elevation and pipe size. Flow, measured in litres per minute, is how many taps are likely to operate at once. Some simple calculations give you duty performance. Pumps have maximum and duty performances. On a pump curve chart, duty performance is mid

Central Districts Field Days 12–14 March Manfeild Park, Feilding New sites at Central Districts event by Ayla Miller

The Central Districts Field Days are shaping up to be the biggest yet, with organisers saying new sites have been arranged to accommodate growing exhibitor numbers “With a combination of our reputation and the fact our visitors like dealing with local businesses, we are hoping to attract the same crowd as last year,” event manager Cheryl Riddell says. “Farmers often say they prefer to come to the Central Districts Field Days than any others, as you can see everything in one day and speak with the local dealers. “There are normally 550 exhibitor sites but this year we are expecting to exceed that.

“Seventy seven per cent of exhibitors re-book, which tells you something about how the field days work for people,” Cheryl says. “We are expecting 35–36,000 adult visitors over the three days and that isn’t including those under 16 who are free. “Thursday is expected to attract the farmers. The farming families usually visit on Friday, and Saturday sees the lifestyle block owners. “We cater for men as well as women, which few field days do. We offer a

Field days heading for ‘best yet’ by Ayla Miller

Planning for the 2015 Central Districts Field Days is well underway with organisers expecting the event to be the best so far. Many of the old favourites will be on offer as well as something new to tempt the taste buds. Woodchopping at Husqvarna woodchopping arena: This classic field day event will be running for it’s 22nd year and axemen are coming from all over the country. With a prize of $5,000, the stakes are high and competitors will be chopping for their share of the glory. Event coordinator Gordon Brooker says there will be roughly 360 blocks of poplar wood chopped over the course of the day. The event is organised by the Taranaki Axeman’s Club and supported by Husqvarna and 22 local businesses who have been onboard since the beginning. Central Districts Fencing Competition: The Field Days is hosting the regional fencing competition organised by the New Zealand Fencing Championship Association. The finalists will go on to compete at the New Zealand National Agricultural Field Days in June held at Mystery Creek. Anyone is welcome to enter, from contractors and farmers to first timers. There will be spot prizes and a prize pool worth up to $5,000, including a $1,200 staple gun. Golden Plier winner Shane Bouskill and Silver Spade champion Paul Van Beers will also be competing in the one-day event. “It’s really worth entering if you are a contractor as employers are looking

for people who can do a high quality job efficiently,” says NZFC chairman and second place Golden Pliers winner, Tim Stafford. Norwood Farm Machinery Centre Tractor Pull competition: The ever-popular tractor pull and the only three-day event, will be making it’s appearance again this year. Thursday will see businesses battling it out during the day with trophies awarded in the evening at the exhibitor function. Tractors are supplied to businesses that don’t have their own. Battle of the Brands will be held on the Friday. This event consists of all the major brands of tractors competing to prove which has more horsepower. Contractors and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to compete on Saturday. “Saturday will include the modified tractors ‘boy-racer rural style’ and the pre-1985 tractor categories,” says event organiser Vaughan Coy. FoodHQ: Food will also be a big part of this years field days with food innovation and research experts-FoodHQ offering the chance to discuss food science in New Zealand. Programme Director at FoodHQ Mark Ward, says, “We’ll be talking to people about our vision and what we’re doing to help grow New Zealand’s agrifood sector. They’ll get to hear from food science experts and get to taste some enjoyable, innovative treats.”

Zealand and natural spring water sourced from the Puketoi Ranges, Damon and Alisha produce a range of award-winning ports. The couple are also believed to be the only winemakers in New Zealand to age their port with Mountain Totara. Damon initially learnt the basics through a wine-making course at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawke’s Bay. He and Alisha have also undertaken their own research in keeping with their vision for using only natural ingredients. Inspiration is drawn from the Ruahine Ranges which hold special meaning for the couple. “The Ruahines mean so much to us, being the place we grew up and wake up to every morning when we open our curtains,” said Damon. The couple travel the country to attend trade shows and field days to promote their ports. Selling ports via their website and direct to customers also provides the opportunity for feedback. “We have the peace of mind that customers are not being charged liquor store prices, and that we can

Pay attention!

Telford, a Division of Lincoln University, is one of New Zealand’s largest land-based vocational training providers, offering practical training in agriculture, dairy, rural veterinary technician, equine, forestry, and apiculture (which is run from Kaitaia). This year, Telford is celebrating its 50th anniversary of educating people within the agricultural sector, with a reunion to be held in April 2015. Telford, six kilometres from Balclutha, began as the Telford Farm Training Institute, resulting from successful negotiations by a group committee of South Otago residents. The committee was keen to see an agricultural training facility established in the area and land was made available from the William Telford family. In 2010 a merger took place between Telford Rural Polytechnic and Lincoln University and since January 1, 2011, it has been known as Telford — a Division of Lincoln University. Today, Telford has large commercial scale sheep/beef, dairy, deer and forestry units with a total land mass of 960 hectares, and includes halls of residence and facilities, technical workshops (machinery, carpentry and welding) and classrooms. Students attending Telford gain real-life, practical training under the

Jersey cow takes supreme award by Denise Gunn

Ferdon Comercia Viyella made history at the 2015 New Zealand Dairy Event when she won the All Breeds Supreme Championship. The six-year-old Jersey cow, owned by Warren Ferguson of Ferdon Genetics in Otorohanga, is the only Jersey cow to ever win the award, and the only cow to win this title twice. A panel of international judges at the event were unanimous in their decision to select Ferdon Comercia Viyella as the supreme champion. Holstein Friesian judge Murray Polson, from Australia, said the Jersey is a trouble-free cow. “She is the epitome of what we’re all trying to breed — a cow that has stood the test of time.” Ferdon Comercia Viyella has competed at every NZDE since 2009, winning numerous championships. She previously won the All Breeds Supreme Championship in 2012. “She is also a great producer of milk with 8,488 litres, 846 milk solids, in 305 days at five years,” said Michelle Ferguson of Ferdon Genetics. At this year’s NZDE, Ferdon Comercia Viyella also took out the Senior and Supreme Jersey Championships, Senior All Breeds Champion, and the Best Udder class. Her full sister Ferdon Brc Viyella

availabwleide nation

won Intermediate Jersey Champion and Reserve Intermediate All Breeds Champion. Her daughter Ferdon Tequila Viyella came first in the Junior Heifer Calf class. Exhibitors travelled from all over New Zealand to compete in the threeday event held at Manfeild Park in Feilding. Close to 400 dairy cattle were entered with breed classes catering for Jersey, Ayrshire, Friesian, Swiss Brown, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorns. A number of cows, calves, heifers and dairy embryo packages went under the auctioneer’s hammer during the annual Semex Summer Sensational Sale held during the event. The sale average was $3,465. Holstein Friesian New Zealand hosted a National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp at Manfeild Park in the week leading up to the NZDE. The camp was open to young dairy enthusiasts between the ages of 15–25 years. A team made up from some of those attending the camp, took part in the NZDE Youth Team Challenge, placing second. The Denver Broncos, from Tararua, won the competition.

Kiwi invention proves popular with hens – and their owners

Like most good innovations Windsong Farm’s ‘Grandpas Feeders’ was born from necessity. Bill Kirkham, grandpa of the trade name and a retired farmer, designed and perfected an automatic chicken feeder to solve ongoing feed wastage with his hens. Word spread and today, son Mark and Alla Kirkham have developed the product to commercial manufacturing scale. Speciality feeders are still made at the Tauranga farm while the standard and large feeders are now manufactured

overseas on contract. After 15 years of growth Grandpas Feeders are well established both here and overseas with further expansion considered. The business diversified into animal feeders and their products are also in environments such as zoos and bird sanctuaries. An automatic chook door is coming onto the market and a new water dispenser is in design.

Grandpas Feeders are now familiar to many a country and urban dweller keeping hens. The galvanised iron and alloy feeders have a grated feed table and a lid protecting the dry feed from weather. The weight of the bird/s on the platform lifts the lid so the hens feed on demand. There are four bolts for easy

assembly with a hints sheet that includes how to accustom poultry to eating from the feeder — (turkeys and ducks can use it too). Three to five hens can feed at a time. If the chook owner is going away, a Grandpa Standard feeder will provide six hens with feed for up to ten days. The company provides after sales service advice and a 12-month money back guarantee. Both size feeders can fit in a car. They’re available from Farmlands or by courier, see www.grandpasfeeders. co.nz or contact Mark or Alla. Call by at the Northland Field Days where there will be a special on feeder and courier fees with savings of up to $45 a unit.

World first for DeLaval New Zealand

The world’s largest robotic free cow traffic installation under one roof is now in operation on a South Canterbury dairy farm in New Zealand, with 24 DeLaval Voluntary Milking System (VMS) robots. The 1,500-cow barn, owned by the van Leeuwen family, went from milking zero to 725 cows in just seven days. It is hoped the barn will be running at full capacity by Christmas. DeLaval’s team worked with the van Leeuwens to meet their needs, providing a complete package to deliver excellence in animal health, efficient milking and a farm that works in synergy with the environment, at scale. Regional President for DeLaval Oceania, Richard Alderton says while New Zealand and Australian farmers have been more cautious than their overseas counterparts when it comes to adopting robotic milking technology, there is a growing minority who see it as a progressive step that will help solve the problem of attracting and retaining quality staff. “Does it help save labour? The answer can be yes, but for others they choose to use the time saved to create value-add activities on-farm, like pasture management.” The VMS gives farmers the gift of time and flexibility. “Both farmer and cow can decide what to do and when they want to do it.” Public sentiment towards cow barns in New Zealand has shifted, he says. “They’re starting to see them as part of the environmental solution, not the environmental problem.” As land becomes more and more limited in New Zealand the challenge is to do more with less and change thinking from output per hectare to output per cow. “At DeLaval we help farmers feed the world and that’s particularly true here in Oceania. Barns and robots fit with DeLaval’s mission to help make sustainable food production possible,” Alderton says. The van Leeuwen operation is a great example of a farm that it maximising its resources and keeping in balance with the environment. The VMS and barn system allows a saving in labour and an increase in milk production. Owner Aad van Leeuwen says there are also savings in storing effluent and re-using it. “What comes out of the barn is recycled and goes back on to the farm. On this farm there is no artificial fertiliser. We have proved to the authorities that what we are doing here is sustainable.” The farm grows all its own feed for the cows on surrounding land as the van Leeuwens have a contracting business too, completing the cycle of a completely self-sufficient farm. Running at full capacity, he expects 1,500 cows inside, continuously milking, producing 1.2 million milk solids. “Our goal is to focus on milk solids and not push production. We want to be sustainable.”

Homeopathic Farm Support Ltd now have available a new third edition of the Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming written by Tineke Verkade. This version is enhanced and packed with new homeopathic products and is improved to make it easier for the farmer to find information. We have also received this recommendation for one of our homeopathic books. “The ‘Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming’ is worth its weight in gold. Regularly referred to, it is our most used farming related text. We have notes from our experiences and successes recorded throughout as we are continually learning and extending out remedy repertoire and knowledge base — that’s the exciting part. We are ultimately in control and not reliant on others! And most importantly, it works.” Our homeopathic products are of a high quality, organically certified by BioGro and have Class Determination

by MPI (ACVM). HFS has developed Herbal AB for animals and people to help and strengthen the immune system, MA Udder Spray to enhance udder health, Herbal Digestive Drench to balance the natural worm life within the digestive system and a Natural Teat Conditioner. Also available are homeopathic books for cows, horses and people, kit sets, laminated reference sheets, and calendars for the cow shed. Feedback received from a south Taranaki farmer regarding the Natural Teat Conditioner — ‘After much anticipation we were very pleased to get our hands onto the newly released Natural Teat Conditioner. We premix it in a 20 litre container and fill a Cambrian sprayer at the end of each milking. The system and product work very well. After about a week all the cows teats have softened dramatically’.

Wellness benefits discovered through Shuzi range

by Denise Gunn

Since discovering the wellness qualities of Shuzi products, professional motorcycle racer Gary Goodfellow has wanted to share this technology so others can reap the benefits. Gary’s racing career included winning several championships around the globe. He also made history as the first New Zealander to win a World Superbike race, and was a test pilot for the John Britton development team. However, along with the highlights of those 20 years of professional racing came a number of serious injuries. Gary endured the pain and lack of mobility caused through broken bones, a replaced hip, rods in his arms and pins in his knees. Ten years ago while based in Canada, Gary was introduced to nanovibrational technology (NVT) through Shuzi bracelets. He said these bracelets made such a profound difference in his life that wanted to share this with the world. Gary introduced Shuzi to our shores six years ago and obtained the selling rights for New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. Shuzi products are designed as a personal energy

Wool Perspective

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Crossbred fleece dealt blow Crossbred fleece dominated the first South Island wool auction held on January 15, although prices prior to the auction were expected to be cheaper than December rates. Considering the Napier sale held on January 8 had resulted in a definite downturn in prices for most of the longer wool types, the relatively small quantities of wool expected during the balance of the season due to the continued decline in sheep numbers may have given cause for cautious optimism. South Island brokers however, did not expect quite the ‘body blow’ dealt to them by exporters right from the auctioneer’s opening call at 8am on January 15, and were definitely showing signs of ‘grogginess’ by the end of the day. When the bell rang after the morning break, brokers came out of their corner hesitantly and, whilst the buyers were waiting in the auction ring to continue the battle, it was clearly evident that there was not a lot of spring in their (buyers) step either. Both sides kept their guard up for the remainder of the

auction and when the auctioneer’s gavel fell for the final lot of the day, a severe bruising was obvious by the number of circles (denoting ‘passed in’ lots) drawn in broker catalogues. Although full length fleece wool received sparse enquiry from the trade throughout January, there were a range of wool types which received good support. Crossbred second-shear types drew good competition and, whilst those types had also eased considerably from their very good levels of December 2014, exporters still had firm orders to fill. Crossbred lamb’s wool drew extremely spirited bidding from a wide cross section of the export trade with levels reaching between approximately 640 and 680 cents per kilogram clean, perhaps highlighting the dry conditions in many parts of the country and the subsequent expectance of a lower than

usual volume of lamb’s wool becoming available over ensuing weeks. Halfbred and Corriedale wool types continued to draw very good support from the exporting trade and it was most pleasing to see the good quality lines available during January once again being keenly bid for. Too few Merino wools were offered during early January to enable any effective comment on the market here, however Australian brokers reported large quantities on offer there (for two weeks in a row the auction offering was well in excess of 50,000 bales each week) with January auction prices reaching levels slightly ahead of December, most likely a reflection of currency movements, as the Australian dollar had weakened considerably against the Greenback, rather than any significant increase in enquiry.

Ever had a dream?

25

In light of an apparent weakening lamb meat schedule, a weaker wool market in general, and the weather gods continuing to send hot dry conditions to many parts of eastern areas of New Zealand, farmers could be forgiven for thinking the sheep industry is getting damned tough. We do need stability from our marketplaces for sheep related products, but achieving that appears to be almost impossible for the wider and more general wool clip. Despite many attempts over time by levy funded marketing boards, grower co-operative bodies, as well as investor owned companies, to try and dictate the price of New Zealand wool, nothing has changed in regard to processor requirement. The fact remains that processors of wool will buy what they want, when they want it, and pay what they have to pay for it at the time, driven by supply and demand. Sure New Zealand wool growers can regard their wool as the best in the world, and in the eyes of most processors it is the best wool available to suit their requirements, however profit and survivability influences their businesses most. Of course there are a number of contracts available to growers who produce specific wool types (some are quite lucrative but are generally limited volume deals) but for the main wool clip encompassing all breeds, the spot market does in fact provide the base line for volume trading. That’s my view.

A rise in world ranking for agriculture drives push for super-campus The agriculture programme at Massey University has risen from 21st to 19th in the Quacquarelli Symonds international university subject rankings and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Robert Anderson is already asking, “What will it take for us to be number one?” “We are already the All Blacks of agricultural education and research in New Zealand but we have a vision of a bigger, brighter future for the region and the country, however we can’t do it on our own,” said Professor Anderson. Professor Anderson is helping lead a drive to strengthen the alignment and engagement with allied science providers and science-based commercial businesses located in the Manawatu region. He said Massey and allied institutions are rapidly taking the shape of a ‘super campus’ with the big players of the New Zealand agricultural sector already clustered around the Massey Palmerston North campus. FoodHQ and its members are part of this. Massey, Fonterra, the Riddet Institute, AgResearch, Plant and Food Research, AsureQuality and the BioCommerce Centre are among those providing leading edge expertise. United

States-based company Proliant has also elected to co-locate in the science-rich Manawatu region. Professor Anderson believes a unified approach would help New Zealand agriculture compete with the world’s top university precincts. “Strengthening the commitment to a more integrated assembly noting Massey is the pathfinder for the wider Manawatu agricultural and life sciences enterprise to take its place amongst the world’s truly elite institutions. “The combined deeds and successes of members of the assembly offer mutually-reinforcing reputational advantages in support of Massey.” His views are backed up by analysis of the 2013 University rankings that revealed eight of the top 10 agriculture universities in the world are based at land grant universities in the United States.

These are well-supported by national and regional funds and sit within large economies. “A standout feature of these universities is that they are surrounded by collaborating institutions, both public and private, that choose to colocate and, in many instances, lever off (and reinforce) the brand of the ‘host’ university,” said Professor Anderson. Massey University had four other subjects ranked in the world’s elite. The

accounting and finance programme, as well as education, placed in the top 100. Massey’s psychology, and operations and statistics programmes were ranked in the world’s top 150. There were 3,002 universities evaluated in the Quacquarilli Symonds world university rankings that analysed 130 million citations and verified the provision of 10,639 programmes. Massey University can be found at stands AG1 and AG24 in the Agriculture Pavilion at the field days.

The ramifications of settlement The ANZ Bank has reached a settlement over the interest rate swaps issue with the Commerce Commission and the Financial Markets Authority and it is the view of Farmers of New Zealand that affected farmers may need specialist legal advice before accepting the ANZ Bank offer. Farmers of New Zealand and our legal advisor, John Waugh of Daniel Overton and Goulding have followed with interest the recent agreements reached where that bank has agreed to compensate its farming customers in respect of alleged misleading conduct in the sale by them of interest rate swaps. We understand that negotiations with another bank continues. Though often each farmer has his own story, the central theme is that the interest rate swaps were marketed and promoted by ANZ’s Financial Markets and Rural teams as ‘fixed rate’ loans. This was in a period of some uncertainty as to where interest rates were actually heading and as floating rates fell to an all time low, farmers found they were locked into loans where the bank actually increased, or had the ability to increase, the ‘fixed rates’. Farmers of New Zealand believes there is no doubt these farmers suffered losses. The essence of the agreement between the Commerce Commission and the ANZ is that the Commerce Commission has concluded that the banks’ ‘conduct was, or was likely to be misleading’. ANZ for its part, whilst agreeing to make a payment of some $18 million, has for a variety of reasons disagreed with the findings against it and they have denied they were in fact culpable of misleading conduct. Their reasons

included for example that the Commerce Commission’s conclusions — ‘have not been tested in Court’ and ‘it would not be liable for any fines, penalties, refunds or damages at law, whether under any Act or any other legislation, regulation or rule of law’. FNZ suggests these are brave words by the ANZ. If that was truly the banks’ position we are of the view that the ANZ should have welcomed the opportunity to have received public exoneration in a defended hearing in court. Before this announcement was made by the Commerce Commission, Daniel Overton and Goulding had already considered this matter for farming

PH: 0508 FARMSHEDS (0508 327 674) EMAIL: farmsheds@vodafone.co.nz

groups involved with ANZ and had issued an opinion to the effect that there was probable cause of action. We are also not convinced, based upon our investigations, that all relevant matters have been fully spelt out in the Settlement Agreement with ANZ. A back of the envelope calculation indicates a payout on average of $100,000 for the 179 farming groups involved on the basis of this being a full and final settlement. Farmers will not know their actual position until they receive a letter from Northington and Partners some time before the end of April 2015. This letter will set out each party’s ‘entitlement’. They will then have 70 working days, being 3½ months, to decide to accept or not on a full and final basis. Even if farmers choose to accept the offer they will not receive any payment until September 2015. That’s nine months from the date of the announcement! So what process should affected people go through in deciding to accept or not? Legal advisor John Waugh of Daniel Overton and Goulding will be on the Farmers of New Zealand Field Days site on Saturday February 28, to provide a free no obligation initial consultation

29

for farmers affected by swap loans. They can also be contacted by email or phone or through Bill Guest at Farmers of New Zealand. FNZ believes it is important for all farmers involved to collectively seek specialist legal advice if they believe the above settlements with the respective banks have left them financially short-changed.

You can handle the truth

In our capacity for knowledge most of us seem to arrive in this world with a clean slate. After childhood we begin to speculate about the long-term — who are we and where we came from? In his book Prison Planet Revelations, Denis Goodwin explores these questions and the possibility that we are deliberately being confused. Now, Goodwin has released an accompanying DVD where military insider Bob Dean breaks his sworn ‘National Security’ oaths to reveal our cosmic connections and reveal ‘truths’ we have been mislead as a society to believe.

Goodwin investigates how we are a product of our culture, upbringing, education and history. He speaks of our inherent guidance system of emotions, inhibitions, conscience and the ability to critically analyse and how this can be overridden or subverted. During our lives we are told many conflicting things — that life is brief, the possibility of afterlife and evolution. Many of us have been made to believe

we are the only significant life in the universe making the rest of the universe redundant. This book encourages the reader to overcome what is prescribed for us by others and make the decision to understand for ourselves our true nature and place in life. Are we the only intelligent life out there? Recently the concept of where we are in the Universe has changed and our solar system is actually at the end of an

This is the fourth time APB Electrical will be attending the Central Districts
