Manawatu-Whanganui Economic Action Plan progressing well Since its launch in August 2016, significant progress is being made in implementing many of the identified opportunities in the Manawatu-Whanganui Economic Action Plan under the banner of Accelerate25. With involvement from business, iwi, local, regional and central government, several project teams have been formed during the past six months to lead the implementation of the plan’s key actions. The New Zealand Transport Agency, district and city council mayors, and Horizons Regional Council chair, are progressing with the development of business cases for state highway and local road improvements to improve access to central New Zealand. Significant progress is also being made on plans to redevelop the Whanganui Port. Advances in the primary sector will feature in workshops at the Central Districts Field Days, particularly around the benefits of reticulated stock water. In addition, projects around the region are focussing on farm mentoring, farm extension, developing high-value crops, agri-food and technology. Primary Sector Implementation Group chair Shelley Dew-Hopkins said implementation is being led by farmers and real progress is being made. “We have teams currently working in Manawatu, Taumarunui and Whanganui.” A project looking at rural water supply in

Rangitikei District mayor Andy Watson said a reliable supply of water can really help key parts of the district make the most of high-quality land. “Some areas of our district have very fertile, versatile soils so farmers could consider intensifying current production or try new crops or horticulture.” The region is also fortunate to have Massey University and FoodHQ as centres of international excellence. to bag a bargain as they browse through fencing equipment, furniture, timber, dog kennels, saddles, tools, kitchen sinks and other paraphernalia. Two years ago, one of the more unusual items was a stuffed emu that went under the auctioneer’s hammer. This year a live emu was put up for auction. “We always tend to get something unusual,” said event coordinator Ron Farrugia. Registered sellers are given a number. When the item is sold, the administration team notes the number of the purchase. The item is available for pickup when the buyer makes payment. The club keeps a database to record all the buyers and sellers at the auctions. Leading up to each event, Lions Club members send letters to all those people registered on the database, advising them of the upcoming auction. Flyers are also distributed and signs placed in paddocks near main roads for passing motorists. Professional auctioneers donate their time and expertise to the event to ensure the bidding process runs smoothly. This year’s auctioneers, sourced from Carrfields, PGG Wrightson, Farm Source and New Zealand Farmers Livestock, sold more than 1,200 chattels, 40 lots of sheep, 30 lots of small animals, and close to 235 bird lots. Ron said the event requires more than 100 volunteers on the day. “It’s becoming a community event run by the Lions Club.” All available club members, spouses, family members and several community organisations lend a hand to organise and run the smallholders auction. The work continues for a few weeks after the

The auction is held on McDonald’s farm near Pohangina event too as the administration team organise payments to sellers. This summer’s lack of fine days in the region did make a slight impact on the numbers attending the event, and some stallholders were reluctant to commit. Ron said he was a bit concerned about the weather leading up to the auction but the day turned out to be warm and sunny. This year’s auction turnover was close to $96,000 with 15 per cent of that figure going into a fund held by the Ashhurst-Pohangina Lions Club. Money from this fund goes back to the local community for various projects and needs.

PASSION

FOR THE LAND by Denise Gunn Award-winning farmers Scott and Julayne Thompson came to Rimunui Station in the Waitotara Valley to manage it and an adjoining property, Mahoe, in 2008. Six years later, the couple took up a lease to purchase agreement with Rimunui’s owners, Tom and Gaye McClunie.

S

cott’s ties with the Waitotara Valley run deep. He was born and raised on a property his parents managed at the top end of the valley. However it was while working as a shepherd on a property near Hunterville that Scott met Julayne. Scott returned to the Waitotara Valley, followed by Julayne, and the pair ran a contract fencing business in the area. Three years later they took up the management position on Mahoe and Rimunui Stations. In 2014, Scott and Julayne began the lease-to-own agreement for Rimunui, purchasing the stock and plant. “Our story is a little different from the norm,” said Julayne.

TOPLINE FENCING CONTRACTORS

“We have a very close relationship with Tom and his wife Gaye, and we wouldn’t have this opportunity without their generosity.” Rimunui used to be the largest station in the district with its original 4,860ha, running 13,000 sheep. The property has since been split up and now covers 2,800ha with 600ha effective. In 2014, four blocks on the property, totalling 750ha, were placed under a QEII National Trust covenant. Since arriving at Rimunui, Scott and Julayne’s passion to farm profitably and sustainably runs alongside preserving the property’s history and environment. in the hard yards to improve the property. A total of 26km of subdivision fencing has been completed, including 13km of the QEII blocks. Spring-fed dams have been created and reticulated through water supplies developed on the flats, more than 2,000 poplar poles have been planted and the development of a wetland area has begun. The woolshed, built in the early 1900s was fully renovated in 2008 and covered yards added. When a wet day hindered Scott and Julayne’s garden wedding plans, the venue switched to the newly restored woolshed. Julayne said Rimunui is a wonderful place to bring up their two children, Charlotte, 7, and Lachie, 5. “There’s so much adventure and learning. “When friends and family come over our bridge to Rimunui, they seldom want to go home.” Currently there are 5,000 stock units running on the steep, hill country property, including 3,200 ewes, 850 hoggets, 50 rams and the balance in cattle. Scott said 50 per cent of the stock leaves Rimunui at about 17½kg carcass weight. Other stock are sold store. At present there are between 400 and 600 contracted hives on Rimunui and the Thompsons would like to treble this number in the coming years. The couple are considering purchasing an Angus cow herd too. With an average, annual rainfall of close to 1,500mm, the Waitotara Valley is predominately summer-safe.

The woolshed, built in the early 1900s, was fully renovated in 2008 It is however, prone to flooding. “On average we suffer a major flood every five years, June 2015 was one of the worst in recorded history. “Historically the rainfall patterns have changed and we have been getting more extreme drier periods and extreme wet periods in between.”said Scott. After the 2015 flood, the couple needed to focus on something different. They decided to open the farm gates to guests and offer a range of activities. “Sharing the beauty and ruggedness of Rimunui has been a project that Tom, Scott and myself have always wanted to do,” said Julayne. Accommodation options include the 100-year-old fullyrenovated woolshed, farm cottage and bush huts. “We just want people to enjoy

Solution to pollution

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Pollution in the environment and on the farms is easily solved. We only need to go back to the beginning of the chemical age to realise that although these products looked good, the continued heavy use of toxic chemicals is increasing damage globally. According to the major chemical companies, they have run out of chemicals to control pest, disease and weeds. Mother Nature’s pests, diseases and weeds have become immune to the chemists’ toxic products. This scenario is also impacting on plant, animal and human health, where drenches, antibiotics, sprays, etc can no longer control the problems. The main deep rooted cause of the problem is a lack of nutrients. Without a full array of minerals to keep the immune system pumping, a lack of these essential minerals impacts the immune system opening life up to all sorts of problems. For the farmers who are just applying N, P and K or worse than that, taking advice from a chemically programmed system, to just apply artificial nitrogen and synthetic soluble phosphate; the two products that are eroding farms precious soil and damaging the environment — what sort of stupid advice is that! How far away from real natural farming is the chemical industry taking the farmers, and what is the point, when consumers globally are crying out for nutrient dense food! And so are the plants and the animals! Here at Agrissentials we specialise in multi-mineral, microbial-rich fertilisers. Our purpose is to increase the mineral value of the soil, using the microorganisms to

convert the natural mineral into a plant available form, storing it in humus, so it does not leach from the soil. The humus created by the microorganisms not only holds the mineral, but also water, increasing the water retention quality of your farm to help you through those dry periods. Here is a system, whereby your pasture and plants get to use all the mineral purchased, plus the added value of water stored within the humus (carbon) created by the microorganisms for plant hydration — this is the natural system at its best! The more you increase the mineral content on your farm, the more you increase the plant, animal and human immunity, ensuring health and vitality to all. The chemical treadmill is taking us nowhere. We need to break the chemical cycle and start working with Mother Nature and all for free capital like the atmospheric minerals: carbon as carbon dioxide making up 45% of plant mineral requirement; oxygen making up 45% of plant mineral requirement; hydrogen making up 6% of plant requirement; and nitrogen contributing the essential 1.5% of plant requirement, adding up to 97.5% of plant mineral requirement, all for free straight out of the atmosphere. This leaves 2.5% for all other 16 essential elements required for plant health. All these minerals are critical.

On a special note, 70% of nitrogen in the atmosphere is fixed by symbiotic microbes and bacteria that live on and in the plant roots. They get carbon from the plant in exchange for nitrogen. The other 30% of nitrogen is fixed by microbes living freely in the soil. In a living soil, earthworm activity creates more air in the soil, which means more water retention. The worms’ castings are also an essential storage of nitrogen. Brookside laboratories found that 10 worms in a spade spit of soil equates to 2.5 million worms per hectare, and that creates 6 tonnes of pure natural nitrogen per hectare per year with no damage to the environment! How good is that! Stop the use of synthetic soluble fertilisers and the environment and your

farm will begin improving overnight! That is how simple it is. It has always been that way until the leftover chemical warfare products from the second world war were sold to farmers as fertilisers and pest, disease and drenching sprays. So, embrace Mother Nature and get your farm pumping down the multimineral, microbial-rich track for a better healthier farm, family and environment. Agrissentials best on earth Organx™ system will take you there. Innovative in the industry

“The PGG Wrightson Real Estate Scholarship programme is designed to attract and develop new entrants into the business by offering them the best possible start in the industry,” according to Max Lyver, PGG Wrightson regional real estate manager for the Lower North Island Many people find it hard to enter into real estate because it is mostly a commission based industry, but PGG Wrightson recognise that some of the most talented people have regular financial commitments that just don’t suit an irregular commission based income. “That’s why we’ve developed our scholarship programme that has already launched some pretty exciting careers for a number of our new sales people,” said Max. Our scholarship programme offers candidates good ‘start-up’ support and in-the- field training and support, from the time they apply for a licence, right through to when they are completing their first sale. There are a few key tricks that will guarantee you better results: • It’s important to sow seed that is best suited to your local conditions and the right time of the year. (most seed packets will have this information) • Keeping it simple, start with some of the quick growers such as lettuce, rocket, cabbage, pak choi these are all very easy seeds to strike. • Always sow less, • Use a good quality seed raising mix

All enquiries welcome; Ph: 027 413 4580 or 06 342 4803 or email: stusagri@farmside.co.nz

The following are four of the most common causes of seed raising failures: • Overwatering • Underwatering • Lack of consistent temperature. • And finally insufficient light after the seeds have germinated Using an electric propagator that has temperature control ensures a far greater success rate. If you are keen to know more about seed raising check out our online FREE seed raising workshops starting in March.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Recycling the natural way by Dean Hoyle

The NaturalFlow wastewater system is revolutionising domestic water waste and sewage treatment processes in New Zealand using a power-free aerating process as opposed to mechanical pumps.

NaturalFlow harnesses Mother Nature’s recycling processes in an enclosed ecosystem that simulates the natural forest floor. Waterflow New Zealand Ltd marketing manager Dean Hoyle explains: “Nature is one huge recycling mechanism, and what our system does is harness those natural processes and forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us, to treat and break down your wastewater until it is perfectly safe to be reintroduced into the environment.” Waterflow NZ spent almost a decade researching and developing the NaturalFlow system before integrating it into the New Zealand market. Homeowners from Cape Reinga to Bluff now have access to advanced water treatment solutions that are synonymous with clean, green 21st century ideals. The system uses vermiculture to reduce solids by up to

95 per cent, creating valuable watersoluble nutrients that can be recycled safely back into the environment. “No other system has the capacity to reduce solids by this amount. We are very much working with nature in our processes, keeping it simple, and using power-free natural aeration processes instead of mechanical pumps,” said Dean. There are no mechanical moving parts, reducing maintenance processes to practically zero.” “We have lived with a NaturalFlow wastewater system now for four years,” said Adam and Karen. “We chose NaturalFlow because we wanted an environmentally-friendly system that didn’t require expensive, ongoing maintenance. Our system has delivered exactly what we wanted. We have a system which requires no electricity, no pumps and makes no noise. I can’t recommend NaturalFlow enough.”

BUSINESS PROFILE

Doing things the natural way With a love of natural health, trained nurse Tineke Verkade set out to help people. Years later she is now also helping out people and their animals — the natural way. Born in Holland, Tineke Verkade immigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1977. She started out her New Zealand life as a nurse at Waikato hospital. “I’ve been a registered nurse as well as a nursing tutor since 1968, and I have always been interested in natural health especially when my children arrived.” While nursing, she studied homeopathy and naturopathy. “They were really good to me regarding the studies I did to become qualified. Her genuine concern for the overall health of the land, animals and people is the driving force behind Tineke’s commitment to natural health methods. After 16 years she left the hospital and started her own naturopath clinic “and never really looked back.” “In Waikato you have a lot of people that are farmers that come and see you, and they said ‘can do something for the cows?’” That inspired her to start homeopathic farm support in 1997. As well as supplying products, Tineke is passionate about teaching farmers homeopathic and natural methods. She goes to regional field days, holds seminars and “talks to farmers on

the phone all day long” she says. So what is Homeopathy? In short, it is a system of natural medicines that are used in small doses. It is based on a ‘like cures like’ idea, where the sick person or animal’s symptoms are cured using a medicine that would cause the same symptoms in a healthy person or animal. An animal is treated according to its symptoms, behaviour and characteristics instead of diagnosing or naming a disease. Homeopathy seeks to be preventative and therapeutic when helping animals. It is focussed on assisting the body to heal itself. “We have an amazing amount of farmers on our database, and what I’m proud of is the initial farmers that came and were taught. Most of them have become certified organic farmers which I’m very pleased about because to be a certified organic farmer you have to have a lot of skills to keep it all going — they are amazing.” She’s also proud of how her “unique and unusual business is still here, helping farmers and their animals. I have staff who I wouldn’t be able to work without — they are the best.”

Award winning rust protection Prolan UK has been awarded the top environmental award at Britain’s leading farm machinery, equipment and services show, heading off 900 exhibitors. This award recognises ‘a new product or innovation which has the most impact on the environment’. Prolan products manufactured in New Zealand from sheep’s wool grease, lanolin, are exported around the world and used in the coldest and toughest of environments to protect machinery and vehicles, including wind turbines. There is a growing trend in the marketplace today for cleaner greener products. Following this trend Prolan products are replacing traditional petrochemical lubricants in Europe and one company in Denmark alone has replaced 15 products with a can of Prolan. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. Prolan’s natural products protect

quad bike and 4WD chassis, fertiliser spreaders — in fact anywhere where rust is an issue. The lanolin acts as a wax barrier that prevents air and moisture getting to surfaces and so prevents corrosion. Prolan is safe on rubbers and wiring and electrics it will not break these down. Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the life of the bike and increase its resale value.

SMALL SPREADING • Bulk fertiliser spreading — lime, fertiliser and chook manure • Competitive rates • Prompt service • Any size property • Free quotes

There is also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are that they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from

EXCELLENT PALATABILITY

Devour is a westerworlds tetraploid ryegrass. • A performance ryegrass delivering increasing dry matter yields as the season goes on. • Contains roughly twice the sugars, carbohydrates and water of a diploid grass.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

• Easier to digest and therefore a high voluntary intake by stock. • Open erect growth makes Devour more clover friendly.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. Solving break-fencing difficulties CARRY-MATE, a specifically-designed electric fence carrying system, enables farmers and lifestyle block holders to work safer and smarter, saving time and money. Doug Harrison’s vision for CARRYMATE came through experiencing difficulties setting up break-fencing. “It occurred to me that although every farmer was handling the storage, transportation, deployment and retrieval of the pigtail standards in their own way, there needed to be a safer and more efficient, systematic way of managing a chore that is done so frequently on so many farms,” he said. Doug invented a carrying system that would be strong enough to survive everyday farm use but also be as light as possible with a comfortable handle. “It needed to be easy to use as a carrier, easily store standards without double-handling and without standards getting tangled, and able to be used with a fence reel. “Most of all it had to efficiently attach to a farm vehicle without adversely affecting the vehicle’s balance, while keeping transportation as safe as possible.” CARRY-MATE’s lightweight, versatile mounting system easily mounts onto most farm vehicles including motorcycles and ATVs. The system enables quick loading and safe transportation of electric fence standards and reels. CARRY-MATE can be unclipped from the vehicle mount for paddock use. It can also be hooked on a gate, fence rail or in the shed, loaded with standards and ready to go.

BIOLOGICAL APPROACH BY ANNA HARDING

Tony Robinson has been growing the leatherleaf fern in Levin for around 18 years. He is one of only two commercial growers in New Zealand working with the species which is marketed for floral arrangement.

“I

’m a nurseryman by trade and I started in Lower Hutt way back in the early 1970s,” said Tony. Then in 1974, through friends, he started to lease some property in Levin so he could grow his own flowers. “We did a whole lot of exporting, but the economics of it was pretty hard going, it was pretty demanding and our weather patterns weren’t conducive to good consistent growing crops.” This led Tony to start looking into alternatives. “I had a mate who was and still is a fern specialist in Christchurch. Between us we imported some plant material around 1998. I’ve grown it

ever since then.” He’s currently got two 1,000-square-metre houses to grow his ferns with one a greenhouse and the other a shade house. “We produce about 250 bunches or 2,500 stems a week for the Palmerston North and Wellington markets, which are then redistributed to florists.” On average it takes about 8–10 weeks for regrowth, except in winter when “we don’t harvest much at all. The bulk of it starts again in September until end of June, depending on the weather.” Christmas and Valentine’s Day are the busiest times of the year. Tony said that orders often double or triple. “That

really knocks the production back and that takes a while to recover.” Tony grows his ferns using a biological system which is, in short, a natural and non-chemical farming method that focusses on soil health. “The way I was growing crops before, I destroyed the soils.” His change to a biological system started after talking to some Wellington florists and seeing the alleged damage to their hands from chemical residues on flowers. “I was fed up of using chemicals and getting very sick from using them,” he said. Tony has now been using full a biological system for the last ten years. “Being biological can start off being expensive but it works out in the long run. I do hardly any pesticide spraying

because I’ve got the crop into a position where I have very few pest problems. That’s using the Professor William Albrecht model of soil balancing — he was the chairman of the Department of Soils at the University of Missouri, and did a lot of research into the relation of soil fertility to human health. If you get them growing properly, you just don’t get pests and insects in your crops and that’s the whole biological approach.” Learning about biological systems has been a long process for Tony, but from his extensive knowledge through reading and experimenting, an opportunity arose a few years ago for him to be a biological advisor, which he does alongside his fern farming. Apart from the weather that makes steady production difficult, Tony says his biggest challenge with the

ferns is “running into a trace mineral deficiency. That’s quite challenging to try and correct. “But after a while you learn to read the plant and you can start to pick up what’s going wrong. It doesn’t correct itself overnight and often it might take a season or two.” From his biological research, and because of family health issues, Tony is also very interested in growing nutrientdense food. “I want to put nutrition back into the food,” he said. “People were interested in what I was doing (with soil health) and they’d get me along to talk.” He found that people were always asking why their vegetables don’t taste as good as they used to. “That really got me into this area of nutrient-dense food. I grow my own vegetables and as part of my biological

work I sponsor Mark Christensen’s heritage food crops. At the moment we are working on heritage tomatoes and looking at high anticancer compounds.” When asked if he had any advice for farmers who are thinking about going the biological way he said: ”Read, read, read. There’s plenty of workshops floating around like ones with Nicole Masters from Integrey Soils. Get a good mentor in your area. The information is out there. Acres magazine USA is brilliant for all sorts of sustainable, biological farming. It’s not just purely about organics. “That’s my long-term focus, and what got me into the biological advisory group, is to help people get away from the current conventional farming systems and get into something that’s more long term and sustainable, healthier for them and their families, for everybody.”

Looking for a superb lube? High-powered farm gear has come to the farm to stay. So has CorrosionX! Less farmers producing more food and less people milking more cows has become possible because of the hightech equipment we have to help us, that is until one tiny electronic part fails in your tractor or the milking shed. Let one lubrication point on the harvester go dry and best-made plans can fail. Yesteryear’s rust sprays, though cheap per litre, are not cutting it any longer on this sort of equipment. We are looking for superb lubrication, extreme longevity, environmentally safe corrosion inhibitors. We want to waterproof electronics in seconds, stop rust in the shed roof in a few hours and rust proof a bridge in an afternoon. It is all very possible! Smart operators use a very light spray of CorrosionX to waterproof their electronics. Or apply ‘Heavy Duty’ for superb lubrication without attracting dust. One litre of CorrosionX coats 1,000 square feet of metal. CorrosionX is resistance to sulphur, methane, fertiliser and salt water.

CorrosionX is safe to 39,000 volts and neutral on insulation, rubber and neoprene. Applied over already wet and corroded metals, it will last for years, not just days. CorrosionX Heavy Duty lubricates three times better than engine oil, never dries out, goes sticky or evaporates, and has unlimited shelf life. It is a reassembly compound, long lasting and applied in seconds. No mess. No failures. CorrosionX Grease protects bearings and levers from rusting out. It is available in aerosols and bulk, sprayed, brushed or even used in auto oilers. It is MPI approved, simple, super fast and easy to use. We specify the right product, solve your corrosion problems and even build you an auto oiler to suit your application. It’s available from quality outlets nationwide. An open mind, then action by Malcolm Bailey

The New Zealand agri-food sector continues to grow, evolve and diversify. Not only should this increasingly diverse landscape be embraced, it’s vital this trajectory continues for our country to prosper. The government’s Business Growth Agenda recognises the enormous potential for growth and spells out the need for another 50,000 employees in agricultural and horticultural industries to boost exports from 30 to 40 per cent of GDP by 2025. KPMG Global Head of Agribusiness, Ian Proudfoot, says leaders in the agri-food industry need open minds. “In guiding their organisation towards a prosperous future, they must be prepared to pull up the anchors that have tied them to the deep traditions inherent within a conservative industry.” An open mind, however, is only the first step. There must be information

and creativity to fill it and then action. This is what NZ AgriFood Investment Week is all about. Those of us in the business of food can never feel like we are in our comfort zones — the way things have been is not the way things will always be. Instead we need to make sure farmers and everyone along the value chain can deliver what the consumer wants. Business success is not an end in itself, and to make our communities more vibrant and help those who are struggling, we need to grow the ‘economic pie’. A growing and vibrant agri-food sector is

key to this, and meeting the Business Growth Agenda goals are essential to New Zealand’s future. We need to focus on what makes New Zealand food special and how capacity can be increased, plus promote the industry as a vibrant investment destination. Each component of the agrifood industry is unworkable without the others. What leaves the farm gate is often unusable until it is processed and packaged into a product consumers want. Consumers and products need to be connected, and science, innovation and research have an important part to play. This is the molecule to mouth value chain. Manawatu is the ideal place to host NZ AgriFood Investment Week. The region is home to agri events like Central Districts Field Days, as well as Massey University, Crown research institutes AgResearch and Plant & Food Research, the Riddet Institute, commercial players like Fonterra and Prepared Foods Processing, and the food innovation gateway FoodHQ. Malcolm Bailey is chair of Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA) and New Zealand AgriFood Investment and farms in the Manawatu region. He is a former national president of Federated Farmers and served on the

Fonterra board 2004–2016. He is also a director of a number of other companies including Westpac New Zealand Limited and the Red Meat Profit Partnership and a founding partner of NZ AgriFood Investment Week. In this role Malcolm also takes on the position of chair for the NZ AgriFood Investment Week founding partner group.

YOUR FARM, YOUR FUTURE, OUR FOCUS. When we planned to change our effluent system, we chose Presco Environmental as we have trusted their quality concrete products in the past and liked the idea of the concrete Prosump over other liner options. Because our project was not straight forward we gained professional advice from Oliver who was able to design the Prosump effluent storage facility to meet our needs, right down to the last detail. We were impressed by how everything went to plan, on time and within budget. We now have a long term sustainable investment and are already benefiting from spreading the effluent, with increased pasture growth, especially in the summer, reducing our fertiliser costs.

DAIRY Pond crust gone for 10th the cost?

Yep!

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of pumps In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings?

Call 0800 475 877 Forward Farming Consultancy For Complete Effluent Management New Zealand Distributor of Slurry Bugs

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last.

Looking for Job Prospects?

It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians. Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point — is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability

to produce the required pressure at reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow. Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs will laugh at my equation above as there are more factors to it than this, but my intention is merely to give the layman some warning signs of what may work or not. NPSH available varies massively from pump to pump! 2. Have you the right of return if it doesn’t meet specs? What is the cost of this ‘experiment’? eg you may have to change mounting points, flanges, engineering, etc. if it doesn’t work and you need to fit another model. Don’t buy a pig in a poke! 3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. Please contact Clement (Clem) Powell on 0800 426 296 for more information.

Dairy proteins open markets A growing appetite for protein in South East Asia offers growth prospects for Fonterra’s NZMP protein ingredients brand and is teaming up with companies in the region to develop new products. “Protein’s popularity with South East Asian consumers is mounting, as people around the region turn to protein-fortified food and beverages in their quest for healthier, more nutritious diets,” said NZMP general manager South and East Asia, Hamish Gowan. “Protein is evolving from being a ‘fitness’ to a ‘health and wellness’ ingredient in food as people become more aware of the benefits of protein and as incomes rise. Although protein has long been associated with bodybuilders and elite athletes, protein-fortified food has expanded into the mainstream, even migrating into infant nutrition and pet food.” Mr Gowans said that more people are looking for specific nutritional benefits in their food, and dairy protein is particularly high quality, providing all the amino acids essential for good health. NZMP’s sales for protein ingredients in the South East Asia region have more than doubled over the last two years and Mr Gowans believes the region continues to offer great potential. “Many companies are looking for ways to ‘premiumise’ their products through innovation. As part of our collaboration with these companies, we are working with the Fonterra Research

and Development Centre in Palmerston Nor th to develop new and innovative dairy products.”

“When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

Mr Gowans said NZMP has led the way in developing dairy protein ingredients and offers the largest range of dairy protein ingredients in the industry, marketed under the NZMP SureProtein brand. NZMP customers use protein in a wide range of food and beverage products including cheese, protein shakes and yoghurt snacks, and protein is now appearing in new convenient formats such as chips, beverages and gels. “People are becoming more constrained in Feed the world — science must step in to help mother nature, and the time they have, so new perspectives bring fresh ideas convenience now plays a factor. This means consumers are snack bars and ready to drink beverages, reaching for products such as on-the- particularly sports drinks, as well as go snacks and drinks, such as cookies, purchasing protein in powder form.”

Rock phosphate benefits There are many phosphate products on the market and each one has different qualities. Kiwi Fertiliser search the globe for quality products, and with phosphate our choice is Sechura RPR. The natural product does not need to be manufactured with sulphuric acid to make it effective. Being alkaline, it is a great fit with our acid soils. To get the maximum effect, sulphur needs to be added as our soils are sulphur deficient. When sulphur is added, the results are almost explosive. Shane Hurley says he has applied Sechura RPR with compost on a number of occasions on his hill country property Pohonui, between Hunterville and Taihape. “I have noticed increased clover growth on the hill, and stock health has improved. The requirements for dagging have been reduced and I put this down to the levels of useful calcium in Sechura. Acid in, runny stuff out! P levels have built.” An experiment showed that yields on plots fertilised for six years with RPR (Perrott et al 1993) were higher than predicted from the Olsen P tests values for those plots. It was found that on average, after six years annual RPR application, Olsen values needed multiplying by 1.69 if an Olsen P response curve, generated using SSP, was to be used to predict yield. If an Olsen P was 20; it needed to be multiplied by 1.69 which would equate to an Olsen P of 33.8. The reason for the under prediction of yield on RPR fertilised plots is that plant

roots can access P that will be released from the undissolved RPR residue but this P is not extracted in the high pH 8.5 Olsen extract. Professor Ian Cornforth of Lincoln University commented that the gradual dissolution of reactive phosphate rock fertilisers supplies plants with available phosphate at a rate roughly equal to the rate at which pasture plants absorb phosphate into their roots, so that the

concentration of phosphate in the soil solution remains reasonably constant. “In contrast, phosphate fertilisers that dissolve rapidly produce a very high concentration of phosphate in the soil solution immediately after they have been applied. “This encourages a reaction between the fertiliser phosphate and some soil constituents that decreases the availability of the phosphate to plants.”

RURAL WHEELS

Return of the top contender by Andy Bryenton

It’s all too easy to slip into a boxing metaphor when talk of the tussle for top light commercial comes around. Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badgeloyalists fuming. Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the

modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the benchseated, chrome-grilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. After their previous Colorado failed to topple the blue oval, GM bosses went back to the drawing board, and they’ve delivered an amped-up contender for 2017 — a new

Headed for the top — the new Colorado is set to take on Hilux and Ranger as NZ’s best ute

Colorado that embraces both modern aesthetics and safety while still staying true to the spirit — and lugging power — of the legendary one tonner. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one tonne of deck load and you have a machine which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm. That sense of comfort is more than apparent inside, with options for all the modern conveniences of a luxury sedan and standard features which older utes could only dream about.

The suite of electronics, both visible and invisible, are state of the art as well. It’s hard to miss the big touch screen centre console which serves as a hub for both Android and Apple’s in-car mobile platforms, as well as a reversing camera and entertainment centre. A battery of safety features — including hill descent control, trailer sway control, stability and traction control, a lane departure warning and even a tyre pressure monitor — offer another level of protection. The top utes had better watch out — one of the big names is back, cinching up its gloves to take a shot at the title. And for a heavyweight contender, it’s not bad looking, either!

Customised to perfection by Andy Bryenton

The tough and dependable little Suzuki Jimny 4x4 has a long history of use in all kinds of off-road applications — and success as a road vehicle to boot. Still the weapon of choice for many 4x4 drivers, and a companion for all walks of life from hunters to farmers to adventure sports enthusiasts. But sometimes even the toughness and utility dialled in to these machines at the factory is not enough. That’s why one company from the Bay of Plenty is set on evolving the platform, creating a range of interesting alternatives keyed in to what Kiwis want from their 4x4. Pete Weatherly’s Evolution Custom Utes company has turned the popular little Jimny into the basis for four specialised machines, after listening to what the rural market wanted and needed from an off-roader. While Suzuki themselves offer the Farm Worker ute as an alternative to their road-going Jimny SUV, the ‘overengineered’ super toughness of the Work Mate, Farm Mate, Road Mate and Z Mate variants, makes these more than just a custom curiosity, but a clear upgrade over the basic quad or UTV. The original Suzuki Jimny is no slouch when it comes to taking on the rough stuff. Developed from a long history of compact 4x4s from the Japanese company, the underpinnings of a serious farm vehicle were there all along. Mr Weatherly comes from a background in farming, but also has a literal track record racing cars and trucks. Like American innovator Mickey Thompson, this often meant going to the drawing board and the engineering shed to make necessary improvements. From humble beginnings as a project to create an affordable and reliable farm vehicle, the Evolution products

which he’s created are now distributed all over the country. Advancements in utility, comfort, practicality and toughness have all been carefully considered and thought out, and the addition of that most necessary piece of farm equipment — a flat deck tray with loads of options — is fitted to each Farm Mate, Work Mate and even the totally road legal Road Mate. With a competitive price and a design focus on unshakeable toughness in all aspects of construction, there’s not much which will slow down these evolutions of the already hardy little Suzuki. To see more, visit suzukijimnyutes. co.nz and check out the story of a 4x4 legend made even better with Kiwi know-how.

NESTLED AMONGST THE RANGITIKEI HILLS LIES THE FARM OF FOURTH GENERATION OWNERS ANDREW AND KYLIE STEWART.

T

he land has been in Andrew’s family since 1901 and today the couple have transformed their surroundings to form a unique and unforgettable farmstay experience. It wasn’t until the couple travelled extensively in Africa and America that they realised they wanted to share their part of New Zealand with other people. “When we travelled overseas particularly through Africa we stayed in some amazing spots. We were inspired by what we saw and realised what we had in New Zealand was pretty special,” says Kylie. “Even though buffalo and lions were super exciting, for international guests we thought, so are sheep and cattle.”

Conveniently they already had a collection of animals waiting for them at home on the farm. “We took the opportunity and developed the area and it was a lot of the work with just ourselves. We used the Woofing scheme and a number of volunteer forums.” During this time Kylie continued working full time as a high school physical education and health teacher while Andrew worked as a journalist. All the buildings used to create the farmstay space are original, including the farm homestead which was used for storage for 25 years. Kylie says they are fortunate the last generation kept them, and the former The Stewart family in front of the ‘bunk house’

homestead has now become the hub of the farmstay and fondly known as the ‘bunk house’. “We sorted and gathered what was on the property to make almost a farm museum and it’s a bit of an antique shop. We started off with East Hut and very quickly got our first guest within a month, and so it was busy from the start. “I had a belief that I knew what we had was cool, I had a vision, and nothing was stopping me. Lot’s of people would have thought I was crazy, and I remember the electrician coming out to wire the bunkhouse thinking ‘what

is she doing?’” Now when visitors see the space Kylie knows that the many hours of work put into the farmstay was worth it. Kylie and Andrew now share the farm with their two daughters five-year-old Hannah and 20-month-old Charlotte. Both girls have already taken an interest in the farm. “Charlotte loves the animals and Hannah loves the farmstay guests. For us it’s not like a motel, this is our family home and we are sharing it with people, kids and animals,” says Kylie. Every week they welcome new guests and volunteers

Kylie likes to use furniture and other keepsakes from the original farm buildings in the farmstay rooms

onto Rangitikei Farmstay. “We started with frequent independent travellers and now we work with schools, from Massey University to the International Pacific College. Now organisations and tour groups are wanting to showcase New Zealand farming.” A typical farmstay would include getting up close and personal feeding animals and a farm walk to enjoy mountain and sea views. “You can see Mt. Ruapehu, Taranaki and the ocean on a good day. It’s a spectacular view at the top of the farm walk which is really popular.” At a cost guests can watch a sheep shearing and mustering demonstration

and do a number of other farm activities. The Stewarts have also managed to organise and create The Mudder — an outdoor event course which embraces natural obstacles on the farm. The competition, in September, has run for the last two years and the focus is on having fun and people challenging themselves. Obstacles include a dam which has floating moss, natural springs, a manmade water slide and a run around a tree with large roots. Only one other full-time staff member is employed to help on the farm while Andrew oversees the running of it and helps Kylie with the farmstay. Kylie

says her favourite part about the job is offering people the experience to learn and live on a farm and hearing their feedback. “My challenge for all my guests is to give them such a great time that they feel like their time on a New Zealand farm was one of the best things they would have done. I’m a bit of an advocate for farming and how we look after our stock.” Although it’s too early to tell whether their daughters will stay on the farm as fifth generation farmers Kylie says it is not something they will be pushed into. Rangitikei Farmstay has just opened it’s woolshed to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Seeing things clearly Barz Optics has launched the world’s first bifocal photochromic sunglasses, featuring high impact UV activated photochromic lenses, which transition from clear in low or no light to dark in full sun. Barz Optics NZ is managed in New Zealand by distributer Ray Austen. The company was established in 1996 by Australian surfing champion Kevin Barr. With 40 years’ experience in the surf, snow ski and sailboard industries, Kevin encountered many outdoor sports enthusiasts who expressed the desire to obtain sunglasses to withstand their sports, and into which prescription

lenses could be fitted. This lead Kevin to develop the Barz Optics sunglasses in collaboration with the optical industry and materials manufacturers from around the world, to assist sports people and ensure maximum protection from UV rays and the elements. Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part one: Osteoarthritis can cause anything from mild discomfort to seriously restricting quality of life. While medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs provide predictable results, nutritional therapy is more unpredictable. Experimentation is important. Some people find their arthritis is greatly influenced by diet while others less so. I generally recommend that people keep clear of common citrus fruits and acidic fruits in general. I am helping one person who by trial and error has found she is very sensitive to strawberries. I am not sure why but small joint arthritis, especially hand joints, seem to be more sensitive to acidic foods. I start most people on an anti-inflammatory diet. The key components are to reduce inflammatory fats, reduce sugars and refined carbohydrates. We target antiinflammatory oils, appropriate protein sources and increase antioxidant dense plant foods. Over the next few columns we will explore the specific components of this type of eating. Not

only will it help joints but is excellent for general health. With supplements, my general approach is to start people on a programme that is most likely to get a positive response in six to eight weeks. I like to keep things simple and usually start with high doses of Omega-3 fish oil for its anti-inflammatory function. To this we to add 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate, 1,500mg of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a 95% bioavailable curcumin (turmeric) extract. In some cases, especially spinal arthritis, I add antioxidant complexes and extra magnesium to relax tissue surrounding the joint. We will maintain these high initial doses usually for one to three months before reducing. Most people start to notice the difference after six weeks. Feel free to contact me for more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For personalised advice, contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his full weekly newsletter at www. abundant.co.nz.

Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula What is Bettaflex?

• Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)
