The regional council’s extensive data network monitors rainfall and river levels throughout the region. Although current low river flows across the region are not unusual for this time of year, consent holders are encouraged to comply with the conditions of their consents and check expiry dates. A Low Flow Restrictions Summary table on the Horizons website indicates where restrictions are already in place. It also specifies those nearing restriction levels and the number of consent holders restrictions may affect. When the river is below minimum flow, water takes for uses other than domestic, and stock drinking water supplies are generally required to stop or reduce — this can also apply to groundwater abstractions that are connected to rivers. Domestic and stock drinking water supplies are essential and can continue below minimum flows in accordance with consent conditions. Horizons Regional Council recommends consent holders check

and understand their individual resource consent conditions. If unclear on these conditions, contact Horizons for guidance. WaterMatters, the council’s webbased information system, assists individual consent holders to manage their abstractions as river flows change. Registering for WaterMatters allows the user to view their telemetered water use data and other information specific to their consent. Water use data is summarised daily. The council also suggests contacting irrigation consultants for advice on the design and operation of irrigation systems to ensure the best position for summer. Horizons will work with the region’s rural community via the ManawatuWanganui Rural Coordination Group to keep them informed of the developing situation. G

enerations of farming families have walked through the door and across the wooden floorboards of the store since William Amey senior founded the business. William had returned to New Zealand after serving in Gallipoli and France during World War One when he heard of a one-truck carrying business up for sale. He purchased the business, which along with a solid-tyred Denby truck, included a section, house and shed.

A decision to rent his house to Mr and Mrs Sherman, and board with them, led to William meeting his future wife. When Mrs Sherman became ill with influenza, her sister Vera came to care for her and take care of the household tasks. William and Vera married in 1920 at St Simon and St Jude’s Church in Rongotea and went on to raise six children: Leonard, Eileen, Gladys, William (Bill), Prudence and Alice. and Rongotea, as well as to and from farms in the surrounding area. In 1925, he upgraded his Denby truck to a 1923 Thornycroft. During the late 1920s to the early 1930s, William expanded the business to include a service car. On a daily basis, morning and afternoon, he transported up to eight passengers to Palmerston North. When a house with an attached dairy, on the corner of Thames and Medway Streets burnt down, William bought the section. He arranged for a new building to be constructed on the site and rented one side of it out as a tearoom and lolly shop. The other side became an office and seed room. Several years later, the tearooms closed. In 1929 William expanded the business to include seed, grain, coal, salt and hardware. The following year, he also bought another truck — a Chevrolet. As the firm grew, William’s two sons, Leonard and Bill, joined him. Two more trucks were purchased as well as fertiliser spreaders. The business took on large contracts for the cartage of lime and fertiliser too. In 1955, the business became a limited company, called W Amey & Co Limited. By then, the company had grown to include six trucks and employed eight staff members. Twelve years later, a kitchen/giftware section, office and staff facilities were built as the shop was extended. William’s three daughters all worked in the company office for a time. Supporting the community and playing an active part was important to William and this dedication has

continued through generations of the Amey family. For several years, William served as chairman of the Rongotea Town Board. During the second world war, he was also chairman of the local Patriotic and Farewell Committee. He belonged to the Rongotea RSA, the Te Kawau Bowling Club, and as a committee member played a part in establishing the Rongotea Memorial Sports Centre. William also served on the St Simon and St Jude’s Anglican Church vestr y and worshipped there regularly. Following William’s retirement in 1960, his eldest son Leonard became the managing director. He remained in this role until he passed away in 1991. William’s youngest son Bill then stepped

into this position, with Jim Riddle as director/secretary. Jim passed away in 2011. Two years later, Bill passed away. During the last 10 years, three of William’s grandchildren Perry, Paul and Ross Amey have taken over directorship. The original goods and services offered by the business has adapted to the changing needs of the rural community. Ross manages the metal cartage, grain, silage and farm track work aspects of the company. Perry is in charge of fertiliser cartage and spreading, whilst Paul takes care of water cartage, the shop and is considered to be ‘the glue to hold it all together’. The farm has been named Shepreth, in recognition of William Amey senior’s birthplace near Cambridge, England. “We aim to leave a sound business for the fourth generation,” said Paul. During the past 100 years, the business has taken care of its customers. This support has extended to supplying credit to farmers in tough times. “It’s all about community and supporting people to succeed,” said Paul. The Amey family held a social gathering with invited customers, past and present to celebrate the business’s anniversary in early February.

YOUNG FARMER TAKES AIM AT TITLE BY DENISE GUNN Two-time world archery champion, Ben Orchard, grew up on a small-scale Northland beef farm. Now in his third year studying towards a bachelor of AgriCommerce at Massey University, Ben has also qualified for the Taranaki/ Manawatu Young Farmers regional final.

B

en was nine when his family moved to a property at Mangawhai to raise cattle. While his father worked as an architect, Ben’s mother and his four siblings ran the farm. The family shifted to a 35-acre lifestyle block near Maungaturoto when Ben was 16. From the age of six, Ben was home-schooled and completed NCEA through correspondence. Two of Ben’s passions, farming and business, reflect his choice of degree. It’s also a perfect fit, lending to career options that will include farm visits, consulting with farmers, applying his knowledge and making recommendations. “I’m currently looking at using my degree

to head into a career in rural banking through a rural banking graduate programme,” said Ben. “Another career pathway I’m also very interested in is agriculture consultancy, but I might wait until I have a good amount of experience in the industry before I look at this.” The 20-year-old was introduced to archery at the age of eight. “I started shooting at the club weekly, bought my first bow soon after and started competing at competitions when I was nine.” Ben began competing between South Auckland and Kerikeri, placing at most shoots. his division. “When I was 12, I travelled out to Australia to compete at the World Bowhunter Championships. I was selected to represent New Zealand for the competition on the Black Arrows team.” Although Ben was the youngest member to gain selection at that point, he won his division at the competition. Ben continued to compete at national competitions, setting more national records and winning most of the events. At the age of 17, he headed back to Australia to compete at the World Field Archery Championships. He was selected again as a member of the Black Arrows team and also as a member of the New Zealand Champion of Nations team. States. Ben won his division and set two world records. “Shooting is quite a high-pressure sport. You just have to block out everything else, stay calm and focus. It’s also physically demanding.” Ben’s ability to stay calm under pressure helped him to place second in the Young Farmers district competition. “I’m stoked. I only entered because I thought it would be a bit of fun and I like a challenge.” Ben knew the contest would show him the practical skills he was missing and needed to focus on. Competitors spent the day tackling 14 modules testing their practical and theoretical skills. Ben found he could apply learning from his university courses to these, as well as practical knowledge and skills picked up from working on farms. “We had to draft ewes from a mob of hoggets, use a New Holland telehandler to move a bale of hay around an obstacle course, and complete a rural budgeting exercise. We also had to identify 25 different types of weeds. “My favourite module was probably driving the telehandler because I’d never driven one before and it was quite different to a tractor.” His most challenging module was matching the sheep breed to the different bags of wool on a table. After joining Massey Young Farmers at the beginning of 2018 with the aim of getting involved, meeting more people and developing his skills, Ben was elected treasurer in September. Although archery has taken a backseat since Ben began his degree, he plans to return to the sport after completing his studies. “I will definitely be getting back into it after I’ve finished university.

Ben placed second in the Young Farmers district competition “One of my goals from there is to go and compete at a shoot in Redding, USA, which is a massive competition with thousands of archers.” “This would be an amazing experience competing at a competition of this scale, and shooting against the top of the world,” he said. “Another short or long-term goal of mine is to help remove any negative stereotypes regarding banks. “When I’m working for a bank, I want to make sure my clients know I’m

working for them and wanting them to succeed.” Ben has also set his sights on small farm ownership.

KIMBOLTON SCULPTOR

set for festival by Denise Gunn

Last year’s overall winner of the inaugural Kimbolton Sculpture Festival, Terry Hawkins, has this year’s entry underway.

T

he first time entrant’s interest in sculpting began 30 years ago through his engineering work. “I was making fancy wrought iron gates, and that led to being creative,” said Terry. “As a sideline, I was making little horse chairs for children. Then I started making different things; a crayfish, a weta, a fish and started making general ornaments.” Terry said he likes making different items.

“I’m always making things around home, such as fancy gates. Wrought iron gates are very arty.” As Terry owns and runs the Kimbolton Garage, he works on his sculptures in the evenings or weekends. With last year’s sculpture festival held in the area, Terry decided to enter. He estimates spending close to 150 hours on last year’s winning sculpture Haast Eagle — Pouakai. “My neighbour Ben came up with the eagle idea, then I thought, what angle am I going to make it from.” said Terry. Terry said deciding on the angle is the starting point. “You have to be careful how you present it.” Visits to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington to study the Haast Eagle followed. The Haast Eagle is extinct and lived around

the time of the moa. Terry estimates spending as much time thinking about and researching the eagle as he did sculpting it. “Attention to detail makes a good sculpture,” he said. His Haast Eagle sculpture was created with shearing cutters, horseshoes and old tools. Terry was born and bred in Feilding. He and his wife Shirley moved to Kimbolton 28 years ago, and have owned the Kimbolton Garage since 1990. The local community supports Terry through dropping off materials for him to use in his sculptures. A busload of Australian tourists also called in to view his Haast Eagle sculpture. The tourists mentioned that Terry’s sculpture would be up amongst the best at the rural sculpture festival in the New South Wales town of Lockhart. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival is based on the Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival, which attracts thousands of people to the four-day event. Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust chairman Tony Waugh said the festival is an opportunity for rural people to have a go, as many may not have considered themselves artists. Last year’s festival saw the number eight wire mentality come out in force in the shape of more than 100 entries from Timaru in the south to Kaeo in the north and everywhere in between. Artists conveyed to festival organisers and judges how entering the awards had given them the opportunity to express their passion for art, and to showcase making something out of nothing. Terry acknowledged the work of the other entrants in last year’s festival. “I would like to pay particular tribute to the People’s Choice Winner with the horse. It had real attention to detail,” he said. The People’s Choice Winner was Regan Cooper with his sculpture, Tyrone

the Retyred Horse. This life-sized black horse was made with tyres. There are plans for Terry’s Haast Eagle to be displayed for public viewing in an area across the road from Kimbolton Garage. Tony said he wants to see farmers and others who live on the land, try their hand at sculpting using wood, metal or anything hanging about. Sculptures should reflect the resilience, heart, soul and humour of those who live and work on the land, express cultural heritage, unique experiences, and be an individual interpretation of ‘The Spirit of the Land’. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival, with a prize pool of $15,000, will be held on Saturday, April 6 2019. Visit ruralart.co.nz to enter. Festival organisers have launched a campaign to raise $5,000 through the crowdfunding website boosted.org.nz/projects/ kimbolton-sculpture-festival.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES ADVERTORIAL

A superlative bounce Growing New Zealand for 25 years.

Supertramps Trampolines have been around for 40 odd years and are one of the only 100% New Zealand made trampolines left in the country, with a reputation for being the longest lasting tramp on the market. Supertramps Trampolines is part of Canvasland, a New Zealand-owned and operated manufacturing company specialising in outdoor weather protection products. Circa 1990, Canvasland took the license of the Supertramps brand and purchased Outdoor Living, which designed and manufactured the Superoctopus octagonal model at the time. The two companies were amalgamated, and Supertramps Trampolines was born. The manufacture of both the rectangle and octagonal models has remained in Levin ever since; it’s integral to the brand to keep all manufacturing in New Zealand, supporting local businesses and keeping quality control at its best. The structural integrity of a Supertramp Trampoline has always been at the forefront, they’re a family trampoline, and the frames are built to recognise that, we use a 65 x 35 x 3.0 galvanised box section steel, which is manufactured to the highest level of Australian/ New Zealand standards, AS/NZS 1163:2016, leaving you with total confidence in your trampoline frame. Keeping manufacturing local allows us to offer additional options like custom powder coated frames and custom-coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas Eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp. While they slept, we easily pieced it together.

We are proud to have been supplying New Zealand with quality seeds and independent advice for for the last 25 years. Heres to another 25 years of successful pastures.

Honestly, the safety pads are great, and the games double when the sides are clear. “I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. “I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier, that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, the whole neighbourhood. “Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my kids learned at an early age, has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have

“The key to the company’s longterm success has been its culture of passion and a desire for continued improvement,” says managing director Angus Haslett. “CRV Ambreed’s first DIY artificial insemination training schools were introduced in 1972, allowing farmers to have the flexibility of managing their own mating programme. “CRV Ambreed is recognised as a strong, innovative artificial breeding company here in New Zealand. Our steadfastness has served to lift the strength and competitiveness of New Zealand’s dairy industry. I confidently believe our founding shareholders’ original vision of giving farmers access to quality genetics has been and continues to be realised.” Ownership has changed several times during the years. The original company, Ambreed NZ Ltd, was purchased by Animal Enterprises Ltd in 1983, one of New Zealand’s largest livestock exporting firms, and in 1989 by the New Zealand Dairy Board. “When the company was sold to global artificial insemination leader CRV

Delta in 2003, it set the company up for a new era of competitiveness in the local market. CRV gave us access to worldleading, new technologies we could deliver to our New Zealand farmers. It was a new chapter for the company, and we grabbed the opportunity with both hands — all for the benefit of New Zealand dairy farmers,” says Angus. “Over the years we have achieved several market ‘firsts,’ including being the first to market sexed semen from New Zealand bulls in New Zealand, being the first to bring environmental genetics to the market and being the first to launch a genetic solution to facial eczema to name a few. “If we can leverage what’s happening globally in artificial intelligence for agriculture, New Zealand farmers will see a powerful opportunity. Utilising the best of artificial intelligence, technologies will transform the future for both our company and for our farmers’ businesses. It will allow us to be more profitable, more sustainable and more productive as an industry. “CRV Ambreed is in great shape and is operating off a solid platform to keep

The convenient garden Vegepod has become well known across the country as the versatile gardening system that keeps precious rainwater and vegetables in, and pests and animals out.

Karts made for family fun Go Karts Direct is an exclusive importer and distributor of Go Karts for the New Zealand market.

Vegepod is a versatile garden allowing the whole family to discover sustainable living and growing their own food

“The pods allow people to grow their own vegetables in small or large spaces, and they are self-watering,” says company director Lisa Lowe. Vegepods come small enough for retirement units and large enough for farms. “Reservoir tanks collect rainwater, which goes through the soil, and the roots go down and drink. The garden can take care of itself and uses 80 per cent less water than a normal garden. A mesh canopy helps eliminate weeds and keep pests and animals such as white butterfly, birds, cats, stock and possums out.” Stands and wheels are optional extras and raise the pod to waist height and make them easy to move. “The original cover keeps things warm so you can grow lettuces in the middle of winter. We recently launched new shade covers, which are great in summer and dry periods

as they provide 75 per cent shade,” says Lisa. Vegepods come in a kitset form and are easy to assemble with no tools required. “We are proud to be part of a good quality product that is made from food safe plastic. Many of our clients are enjoying having gardening back in their lives, and farmers are loving being able to capture and recycle rainwater, meaning tank water is saved. “We now have 65 stockists nationwide in garden centres and stores such as Mitre 10. We are also partnering with an upcoming TV series around sustainable living, and we recently launched our community programmes throughout the country teaching how to successfully grow Vegepod produce and are expanding into the South Island and Pacific islands.” For more information visit vegepod. co.nz, phone Lisa on 021 442 273 or visit site N11 at the Central Districts Field Days.

Taking care of farm business Agriculture contributes two thirds to New Zealand’s exports. With growing world demand, agribusiness growth is assured. Your business needs to be structured to enable you to maximise growth and new business opportunities, and to protect the gains you have already made. Dewhirst Law is an expert in creating clear, simple and cost-effective structures to manage your assets and your farming business. We make the process quick and easy — so you can get on with the job of farming. Tax is an important consideration. We will work with your adviser to ensure that your business structure is efficient, and maximises the benefits to you. Companies create a separation of the business from your personal or trust assets. Shares can be issued to multiple owners and investors, and control can be maintained in the hands of majority shareholders. While day to day decision making lies with directors, shareholders can implement controls and limits on how the company operates. Companies create a clear line between ownership and management and can prevent family squabbles. Companies are perfect when you are managing multiple businesses or farming operations. They provide clarity and also allow independent parties to work together. We can create a shareholders’ agreement to govern the relationship

between shareholders and directors, as well as provide a constitution to give effect to those intentions. Your company can be personalised to suit your business and relationships between your key people. Trusts are often used to hold substantial property, including the farm. They can protect assets from creditors and relationship breakdowns, and keep them safe for the beneficiaries. Trusts also provide a straightforward succession vehicle for land. We can tailor a trust with your family’s circumstances in mind. Sole trading and partnerships leave the assets and decision-making in the hands of the individual farmer. They are commonly used due to their straightforward nature. However, the demands of the modern farming business, and the external risks to the family and farm, probably mean that

The good oil

Pay attention!

The picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, Mangawhai, is home to 1,300 olive trees, which produce award-winning extra virgin olive oil. “All our oils are certified by Olives NZ, the national body for olive growers in NZ,” says Linda, “and this year we are happy to have achieved three silver awards in the national competition.” The oils are beautifully fresh, with variations in taste due to the different varieties of tree. The Ascolano oil has a hint of pepper at the finish and sets off a summer salad beautifully, their Leccino is smooth and buttery (try it drizzled over ice cream!) while the Frantoio has a lovely fruity flavour that is perfect for all cooking and, with fresh lime, is delightful drizzled over a summer fruit salad. Deeply passionate about New Zealand’s growing olive oil industry, Chris and Linda say their visit to Spanish groves last year was very encouraging and NZ olives could become as successful as New Zealand wine is today. “The olive industry can compete on the world stage, but we have to compete on quality not quantity” explains Linda. “We just have to discover the best way for our climate.” The grove in King Road is also home to The Grove Supply Co that provides anything a small to medium grower would need. That includes harvesting equipment and deleafers. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless-steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” The Grove Supply Co is the sole official distributor in New Zealand for Sansone and Zanon, the top two Italian

Helping with joint pain Helping arthritic joints (Part One) I am often asked whether cartilage lost through osteoarthritis can regenerate through taking supplements. Maybe I can answer this with an example. Last year I received a call from a man in his late 60s with osteoarthritis in his knees. It really affected his mobility and reduced his quality of life. I put him on an anti-inflammatory eating plan and added two supplements. The first was omega-3 fish oil at therapeutic doses. I then added my joint formula at a double dose. That meant he was taking 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin and 1,600mg of glucosamine with 400mg of high potency 95% curcumin turmeric extract. Within three months the swelling had gone down and the pain was abating. Now six months later he has regained his mobility and can now undertake the recreational pastimes he had previously stopped. The evidence that cartilage damaged by arthritis can significantly regenerate is poor. There is evidence that high doses of chondroitin can help cartilage, but it seems that once

your cartilage is lost — then it is gone. That, of course, begs the question as to why his knees improved so much. There is good evidence that high levels of chondroitin can help improve the function of whatever cartilage remains. It does this by giving the specialised cells called chondrocytes that maintain cartilage the raw materials to improve cartilage function. However, most of the improvements are likely from reducing inflammation within the joint capsule. Curcumin from turmeric, chondroitin sulphate and EPA from Fish oil are very anti-inflammatory. Shutting down these inflammatory processes can help reduce swelling, fluid build-up and subsequently making joints more comfortable. The best approach is to contact me for a personalised joint health programme. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz.

Deer numbers improve Farmed deer numbers, including the number of breeding hinds and fawns, increased in 2018 according to provisional agriculture census figures released by Statistics New Zealand. It follows a small recovery in stag numbers in the 2017 census, and Deer Industry NZ chief executive Dan Coup says the trend is a strong indication of growing farmer confidence in the viability of deer in a drystock farming operation. “Hind numbers in the year to June 30 2018 recovered to 413,400 from a low of 392,300 in 2017, according to the provisional figures. It is the first firm indication that the long-run decline in deer numbers that began in the late 1990s has ended and that a recovery is underway,” says Mr Coup. “What is even more interesting is that the statistics indicate a dramatic increase in hind productivity. Farmers reported that 84 per cent of hinds weaned a fawn in 2018, compared with fewer than 73 per cent in 2008. This increase probably reflects the efforts farmers have been putting into improving hind nutrition and management. “It also means deer farming, along with strong product prices, is able to compete better with alternative land uses — this has been a key objective of Passion2Profit, the deer industry’s Primary Growth Partnership programme.” The 2018 increase in hind numbers of around five per cent, is seen by DINZ as sustainable if it continues in the coming years. “If this growth rate continues, it is one that our venison markets should be able to handle. By and large, it is coming

Dan Coup, Deer Industry NZ chief executive

from the expansion of herd numbers on existing deer farms and to a lesser extent from newcomers to the industry,” says Mr Coup. “We don’t expect to see a large influx of new deer farmers. Modern deer farming is a specialist business, to successfully farm deer you need to make a significant investment in fencing, facilities and skilled staff. Velvet harvesting facilities need to meet the high standards of world markets. “The modern generation of deer farmers are highly skilled deer managers, as well as being savvy business people. They share information and experience, and most of them have close working relationships with their venison marketers and velvet buyers.”

Sam grew up on a dairy farm, providing him with a firm foundation to build his engineering career on. He began work as an avionics engineer with Air New Zealand, specialising in electrical, instrument and radio work before moving to civil engineering with Fulton Hogan. Following a two-year stint, continuing as a civil engineer in Wellington, Sam relocated to Feilding with his family. He then took on the directorship of QWS. Working in both the dairy and engineering industries has given Sam the skills and knowledge applicable to the range of work QWS are

With a focus on reliability, efficiency, loyalty, integrity and value for money, the QWS team operates in a turn-key manner. “From the smallest repair to the largest system, we will design, supply, install and maintain our products, ensuring satisfaction and efficiency for our clients,” said Sam. “Our products are world leading, and our team aspires to be industry leading also.” In 2016, QWS became a Lindsay dealer for Zimmatic Centre Pivots. Two years later, as a GEA service partner,

the business added Milfos, Westfalia Surge Cowsheds and many other farm infrastructure products. The new owner, Johnny Neil, was born and bred in Taranaki. As a licensed building practitioner holding a national certificate in carpentry, Johnny has built up an excellent reputation for farm infrastructure and building work in the agricultural sector. His business, Johnny Neil Building Limited, has been running since 2011. Johnny was looking to expand his well-established building company, and with the decision to purchase the business in December last year, Presco has undergone a change of direction. at the grand final, created collaboratively between Young Farmers’ representatives and local WorkSafe staff.“ As part of the support, WorkSafe will also be running challenges in the AgriKidsNZ and Junior Young Farmer of the Year sections and joins other sponsors including Ravensdown, New Holland, Honda, Stihl, FMG, Massey University, AGMARDT, Lincoln University, Betacraft and Meridian.

New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith says the partnership with WorkSafe is the perfect fit. “Our organisation has a strong focus on health and safety. We want young farmers to become old farmers, that is what makes this partnership a perfect fit, and we’re hopeful it will help efforts to improve health and safety on farms and in agri-businesses.”

Young Farmers set for regional final

MERGE LIKE A ZIP

Seven contestants will be putting their skills to the test in the upcoming Taranaki/Manawatu Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. Marton Young Farmers Club member, Sarah Meurk, is the only woman in the field. Sarah rears calves and runs cattle on a Hunterville lifestyle block with her husband. She also juggles being a mum to their young daughter with working part-time on the Feilding High School farm — this will be Sarah’s first regional final. “I’m super excited. It’s always been my goal to make it into a regional final,” she said. Fellow club member, Alex Field, has previously competed in three district contests — this will be his second regional final. Alex is a stock manager on a Turakina farm. He said the competition is a great way to test skills against like-minded people. Ashton Coates is also a member of the Marton Young Farmers Club. He works as a shepherd east of Whanganui and earned a spot in the regional final on his first attempt. “I grew up on a dairy farm and wanted to give the contest a whirl,” he said. James Beattie joined the Marton Young Farmers Club a couple of years ago. He works as block manager of

a 650ha Taihape property as well as tutoring agriculture to Taihape Area School students. After entering the district contest four times, James said he is stoked to make it through to the regional final. “I’m pretty competitive — but I originally entered to develop my skill set.” It will be the first regional final for two members of the Massey Young Farmers Club too. Benjamin Orchard is studying towards a bachelor of agri-commerce, majoring in farm management, at Massey University. He will be up against another Massey Young Farmers Club member, Graham Johnson. Graham said he would like to make it to the Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final one day. “The competition opens the door to significant opportunities and allows you to meet new people.” Coastal Club member Blair Briscoe, a Taranaki dairy farmer, will also be competing at the regional final. The regional final will be held in Whanganui during the weekend of April 6–7 2019.

Forging new relationship

A long-standing contributor to New Zealand agriculture Gallagher Ltd and Federated Farmers are joining forces to form a new business partnership. Federated Farmers recognises Gallagher as a leader in its field, having more than 80 years’ experience as a leading technology company in the animal management, security and fuel systems industries. The two companies shared values of providing solutions for rural communities has sparked the new relationship. “The partnership aims to find ways to better align innovative solutions with what’s happening on-farm. We want to give Federated Farmers members support in assisting with compliance and legislation,” says Gallagher marketing manager Darrell Jones. “We see great value in Federated Farmers providing us with sector insights around on-farm legislative updates and changes to help us with this. We believe in the power of technologybased solutions to transform the lives

of farmers across New Zealand.” Bill Gallagher famously invented the first electric fence in the 1930s, quite literally sparking innovative electric fencing systems. Federated Farmers members can expect to benefit from the business partnership in 2019 with innovative on-farm solutions from Gallagher, which include EID (NAIT) tag readers and insulated line posts. “Gallagher’s long history with the rural sector and its focus of improving life on the farm aligns well with what Feds does every day,” says Federated Farmers GM commercial Graham Hill. “Our partnerships are an important part of our business, and we look for like-minded culture and values, for our partners. Gallagher clearly fits this profile. We look forward to working with the Gallagher team into the future.”

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Last year the DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Compensation Assistance Team was established to help farmers affected by Mycoplasma bovis with their compensation claims. Hundreds of farmers across the country have been affected by Mycoplasma bovis and compensation has proved to be a challenge, so a team was set up to help farmers through the process. The free DBCAT service is run independently by DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb NZ, and supported by the Ministry for Primary Industries. DBCAT recently assisted Canterbury farmer Adrian Dawson in putting his compensation claim together. He found the team’s support, advice and accessibility invaluable. “I know we wouldn’t have made it to this point with our claim without the DBCAT team driving it — thanks a million,” says Adrian. “My advice to other farmers going through the process is to be proactive and always be thinking a few actions ahead. There are many hoops to jump through, so educate yourself on the process and know the rules.” In its first four months, the team has grown from three to 21 team members, spread across the country, supporting 194 farmers with their claims. The DBCAT team can help farmers affected by M bovis with understanding whether you are eligible for compensation, clarifying what losses you can claim for, working through the compensation claim forms with you and supporting you through the compensation claim process. “None of us wants to be going through this, but it is much easier with the great support available,” says Adrian. “Between Rural Support, DairyNZ and the DBCAT team, the welfare checking, advice and support has been amazing. It shows the importance of finding and keeping good people to work the process through with. Red tape takes

Grant and Toni Montgomerie are advocates for hunting wild pests and started their family business PossumMan Petfoods as a solution to pass on the valuable nutrition to pets.

“W

e started the business three years ago with 40 hunters and now have 130 spread across the country removing wild animals such as possum, wallaby, rabbits and turkey from properties,” says Grant, also known as Monty. “The pet food industry is heavily regulated, and there are strict guidelines, which must be adhered to. All wild game must be taken from poison-free areas, and correct paperwork and procedures followed. “Once killed every animal is GPS tracked, has a post-mortem and gets put through a metal detector before processing. Things don’t just get chucked in a big mincer; we are the nearest thing to organic pet food that you can get because wild game

has never been given antibiotics or any chemicals.” “We work alongside regional councils and the Department of Conservation to get rid of pests in New Zealand and are constantly looking for access to poisonfree areas.” PossumMan Petfoods has licences to process possum, rabbit, hare, wild deer, wild goats, wild turkeys and wallaby. “Our son Dylan works alongside us, and we are a licensed Ministry of Primary Industries primary processing plant, which is heavily audited on a regular basis. We deal with the poison and TB forms and ensure things are done the proper way; there aren’t too many of us around. Being a primary processor means secondary processors buy their meat from us to create their products.”

Hunters are based across the country and come from all walks of life. “Some work full-time and some parttime and they range in age from 16 to 70 year-olds, including mums and dads and they all love the job. As long as they pass our exams and get registered anyone can be a hunter,” says Monty. “It is an MPI requirement that hunters work without using poisons which affect other animals and the environment. Rat bait stays in the ground for three years, but with us when the animal is killed, it is healthy for the environment. “We are based in Northland, and when we are low in wild game here, we gather from hunters elsewhere such as Hastings, Taranaki, Waikato or the South Island. “Our team work the oldfashioned way, and if you have used bait stations on your farm prior to us coming in, we simply have a rest period on the land before culling.” The registered hunters put lures around farm boundaries at regular intervals to encourage the wild pests out of bush areas. “Our hunters are passionate about what they do. We have formed strong relationships and feel good that we are turning pests into pet food and employing people. You just need people skills, and to be able to do the right things,” says Monty. “To collect the food I travel with our freezer truck and scales and check the paperwork is correct before loading.” Monty and Toni have been associated with the possum industry for some 10 years.

‘Monty’ has hunters across the country supplying a range of pest animals for his Possum Man Petfoods products

“It is an exciting industry to be a part of and making pet food is a great solution for using the wild animals because the health benefits are amazing. Possum meat is low in fat and high in omega fatty acids. “Lots of animals have allergies sometimes caused by sheep, chicken or beef products and fillers so changing to wild game means they are getting protein with no chemicals in it. ”We aim to keep the food as close to the way nature intended as possible, by avoiding fillers and chemical additives. If you buy a kilo of possum, you are getting 100 per cent possum. “It goes through a five-millimetre mincer, and we don’t use chicken fillers or offal from other animals. We don’t

use the heads, guts, feet, fur or eyes and we produce the food in cubes and freeze them in snaplock bags for convenience. “Using wild game is essentially freerange unlike the meat used by some other pet foods on the market. We don’t get old milking goats that grew up on concrete, our goats come from the bush, and the meat is much darker and beautiful. “We are members of the NZ Pet Food Association and enjoy helping our clients look after their pets dietary needs. More people aware of the importance of good nutrition for their pets nowadays and they can be confident our products don’t have added chemicals that can cause allergies in their much loved furry companions.”

ADVERTORIAL

About better broadband Inspire Net, a typical backyard startup in 1998, through innovation, a ‘do whatever it takes’ attitude and a core focus on providing a better service, has grown to become the preferred provider in the region, rolling out broadband to communities across Manawatu, Rangitikei, Tararua, Horowhenua, Whanganui and Masterton. We have built a reputation for mucking in, digging ditches and doing whatever it takes to provide customers with the best broadband in the region. Just because you live rurally, doesn’t mean you should miss out. Getting rural communities connected to the internet can be a lot harder than it is for ‘townies’, it takes a lot more funding,

organising and travelling, plus the need for good weather is fairly essential too. When no one else was willing to invest in small local communities, Inspire Net stood up and said, “no problem.” Our Community Champion initiative enables like-minded rural locals to get together, and with enough interest, we’re able to work with them to get them

connected to the world. We continue to upgrade our rural network with faster equipment and new technology enabling more and more customers to use all the latest services, such as Apple TV and Netflix, from the comfort of their couch. Sometimes installing fibre cable is not a viable option, and this is especially true in a lot of rural areas — this is where Inspire Net Wireless broadband can help. We have many wireless access towers around the Central North Island, which provide internet access over radio signals. AG CONTRACTORS Technology shows the way Technology in the 21st century is a vital tool for farming and particularly for contractors — all in all it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry. The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs combine real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone. GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production, while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. That’s vital for the bottom line as better control and spread of costly fertiliser, accurate spraying and vegetation control is possible, reducing overall expenses, producing a higher yield, and even more importantly creating a more environmentally friendly farm with strict application controls possible. Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements and prescribing and applying sitespecific treatments to increase agricultural production. It is not only ground or aerial spreading that has taken a huge leap

forward. All other aspects of farming have benefited, with field-placed sensors in stock paddocks, croplands and orchards sending realtime data to phones, iPads and computers. Farmers are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields. The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques. Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations and protecting natural resources for future use. Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient. The accuracy of GPS creates farm maps with precise acreage for field areas,

road locations and distances between points of interest. GPS allows farmers to accurately navigate to specific sites in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or monitor conditions.

Prolan a lanolin-based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in NZ has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery. Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. In fact, it works that well that many vehicle-testing stations are recommending a coating of Prolan to prevent corrosion. A spray of Prolan on moldboards and ploughing equipment prevents rust and keeps them clean and in good condition. It is the unique ability of the lanolin in Prolan that penetrates into metal components that prevents corrosion. Prolan saves the life of machinery exposed to air and moisture whilst out in the field or during storage. Around the workshop and for general maintenance Prolan’s ‘Enduro Medium grade’ works well as a general lubricant — penetrating into seized bolts — chains and other moving parts. Prolan is so versatile it replaces many other workshop lubricants and is used to stop squeaks as well as to prevent rust long term. Farmers and contractors have noticed that

STOP RUST

Prolan saves the life of your machinery

Prolan stays on once applied; saving repetitive maintenance. For example, an orchard mulching contractor found by applying Prolan to his flails on his machine he saved time on repeat applications, instead of lubricating daily he used Prolan once a week for maintenance. A coating of Prolan Enduro Medium grade is excellent on quad bike chassis as it prevents corrosion caused by manure and salt. With the added benefit that a cold water blast will not remove the Prolan coating, it stays on preventing corrosion and keeping the frame in top shape. In the Prolan product range, there is also an anti-seize grease, which is very popular for assembly of components. A small smear

of Prolan grease applied to bolts or pins when assembling equipment ensures they can be undone years later. It also minimises parts replacement as these can be removed easier instead of by force which results in breakage if no anti-seize has been applied. The Prolan product range is made up of natural NZ wool lanolin, which ticks the boxes for environmentally friendliness and biodegradability — safe on the environment as well as the user. Prolan saves time, work and money. By applying a spray of Prolan to farm machinery and equipment, it lasts a lot longer and increases its resale value.

Providing homoeopathic services December 2018 saw a change to Homeopathic Farm Supports when Tracey Simpson purchased the company and slightly changed the business name to Homeopathic Farm Services. Tracey was born and bred on a dairy farm in the Waikato and has been around dairy farming for most of her life. She left school to go farming and then started her career as a veterinary nurse. She has farmed alongside her husband and three children for the past 20 years, and they are currently

sharemilking 900 cows. She first started using homoeopathy in 1999 on cows and also on her children with good success, which lead her to pursue the study of homoeopathy. She has a Diploma in Homoeopathy (Humans) and is currently studying towards her Diploma in Homoeopathy

(Animal Health), which she will complete this year. “We have clients all over New Zealand including many organic, conventional and lifestyle farmers who use homoeopathy for animal health in their farming operation, as well as a significant number of sheep and beef producers,” says Tracey. “They have been extremely happy with the success they have experienced using homoeopathy to improve and maintain the health of their animals and productivity of their farm.” HFS Ltd has a Natural Teat Conditioner (MPI — ACVM registered) that is a complete teat spray to be used after every milking and promotes suppleness of teats with no cracks. “Farmers say it is the best teat spray ever. The other exciting product is the Herbal Digestive Drench — a natural health tonic and nutritive to support the healthy faecal egg count and maintain a healthy animal. “We provide books for dairy, dry stock and lifestyle farmers, that are a wealth of information for your personal learning or a great reference tool for the safe administration of the homoeopathic products. We also provide a free telephone help desk, information packs, ongoing support through newsletters and soon emails with information. We

Bill retired a few years ago, and his son Mark and daughter-in-law Alla developed the company further and in recent years added the poultry drinking cup to the invention and an automatic chicken coop door. “The drinking cups are a huge success. They attach to a container and automatically refill a dessert spoon of water at a time,” says Mark. “There is no more messy or spilt water — giving the hens fresh, clean water on demand. ADVERTORIAL

Livestock agents celebrate 20 years Father and son Butch and Luke Jurgens are celebrating a special milestone — the 20-year anniversary of Butch Jurgens Livestock. Based in the Manawatu and working with beef, sheep, lamb and dairy industries, Butch Jurgens Livestock has a far-reaching network of trusted suppliers and buyers. They’re also buyers for ANZCO Foods. Founder Butch worked as a sheep and beef farmer for 25 years before he switched to being an agent. “When I started the business I could see there was a gap in what our farmers needed,” says Butch. Son Luke, who joined 10 years ago, is clear about why Butch Jurgens Livestock has done so well. “We never want to be a one-deal wonder — relationships are our top priority,” says Luke. “Our clients know that we work hard on their sale so that they can focus on the farm. They’ve

done the work of raising the stock, so we handle everything else — the onfarm weighing and sale, transporting the stock, NAIT transactions, invoicing and payment.” “We’re working in the information age now, and offering up-to-date pricing and marketing info is really important,” he adds. “The farmers who work with us get to make informed decisions, and they’ll know the price they’re getting before the stock has even left their farm.” The team look forward to celebrating the milestone with its customers. “It just goes to show that we’ve got the experience needed for this industry. Whoever they’re working within our team, farmers know that they’re in experienced hands.”

Power to the ground by Andy Bryenton

There comes a time when simply developing more horsepower is not enough. We’ve seen it in the power wars between big brands of roadgoing cars — at a certain critical juncture, there’s a limit to what can be transmitted from even the most advanced engine to the ground. That’s why the latest advancement in Can-Am’s Outlander range of quad bikes involves the delivery of applied force where you need it. Knowing that the contact patches, which anchor any vehicle to the ground are only the size of most people’s

palm-print, Can-Am engineers have made significant suspension and ride refinements to the 2019 Outlander XT

Can-Am have concentrated on getting power to the ground where it’s needed for their new Outlander XT

to complement its selection of three Rotax engine choices — either a 62hp 650cc, a 78hp 750cc or a thumping 91hp 1,000cc V-twin unit. It all begins at the front, with a wider stance meaning a more planted feel on the trail. Can-Am has improved the front A-arm suspension and sway bar to capitalise on this wider track. At the rear, the independent suspension has also been reworked to eliminate scrub and camber changes, leading to a more ‘straight up and down’

wheel motion with plenty of travel. It all adds up to inspire confidence in the rough. Less unsprung weight, tyres with extreme grip and even more durable aluminium wheels have all been added to the recipe. Controlling the Outlander XT has also been made easier with the adoption of a three-mode power steering system, which adapts to your input for easier turning in tight spots. At slow speeds, the power steering assist is ramped up, while it steps into the background when the revs get high, allowing for a natural feel of the terrain through the handlebars. Like all the best technologies, it’s unobtrusive when you don’t need it, though there is a further level of control — Can-Am has provided riders with three distinct settings to tailor the power steering response to the conditions. With a 750kg towing capacity and the option to fit an electric winch — along with a host of other customisation upgrades — this is a clear advancement on previous models of Outlander, taking the range to a new peak. Did we also mention that it looks fantastic in camo paint as well? Come and check out your options at this year’s field days, and take a test ride.

Signing for A2 milk

Fonterra is signing up farms to supply A2 milk for the company in the 2019/2020 season following the national launch of the A2 Milk brand by Anchor late September 2018.

PLUMBING LIMITED

“Signing up New Zealand farms to significantly increase supply of highquality milk to The A2 Milk Company is a positive step forward. It clearly shows the strength of our strategic relationship, and our shared commitment to fast-track market growth and enable farmers to create additional value from their milk,” says Fonterra managing director of Cooperative Affairs Mike Cronin. The co-op’s initial milk pool will be based in the Waikato around its Hautapu site and will support the production of ingredients. It is anticipated around 100 farms will be needed for next season. The location of the milk pool was

determined by several factors. Most importantly, the site needed the ability to manufacture the specific product in demand, produce relatively small batches and adapt easily to any product demand changes. “While other regions were thoroughly considered, ultimately the decision must be demand-led. The ability to efficiently manufacture a range of products to meet that demand was the over-riding factor in choosing a site. As demand and product lines grow, we will look to expand the milk pool to enable more farmers to participate,” said Mr Cronin. Most of the value from the relationship with The A2 Milk Company will be returned to all co-op farmers through the dividend. Participating farms will also receive a premium for their milk. “The A2 Milk Company is pleased to be making progress on our relationship with Fonterra. These farms will help support new growth areas for our

company across existing and new markets. This is the next step in what we believe will be a fruitful long-term relationship with tremendous potential,” says The A2 Milk Company managing director and CEO Jayne Hrdlicka.
