A Forestry Hub 2020 will make its debut at this year’s field days. Presented by the Southern North Island Wood Council, the hub involves a partnership of 15 different forestry sector members showcasing safety, training opportunities and local companies. The hub’s lecture tent will feature a series of speakers talking about carbon, farm forestry, industry safety, forest investments and training. Competitions and forestry industry information will be available, as well as machine-driving simulators and children’s games. Field days visitors will have an opportunity to learn about CACTUS — an eight-week programme aiming to instil young people’s discipline and selfesteem. Feilding police, the Manawatu District Council’s Youth Focus Group and RNZAF Ohakea joined forces in late 2018 to launch the CACTUS programme for youth in the region. CACTUS is designed to extend the minds and physical capability of youths through focussing on teamwork, goal setting, leadership and discipline. The Manawatu has one of the largest numbers of high school participants in the country. Youths involved with CACTUS will be available at the New Zealand police site to share their stories and chat with people about their journeys, and the programme. Near public entrance three to the grounds, New Zealand’s top excavator

operators will put their skills to the test as they vie for the National Excavator of the Year title. This annual competition, organised by Civil Contractors New Zealand, was first held in 1995. Winners from each regional competition are eligible to compete in the national event where a variety of challenges tests their abilities. Competitors will face tasks promoting work-safety and skills used on the job, as well as other more unusual challenges, which often include pouring a cup of tea, painting signs or opening beer bottles. Other crowd favourites will return with the NZFC Central Districts Double Power Fencing competition, freestyle motocross shows and the Ultimate Canines Dog Show, which will present plenty of new tricks. In the Cuisine Pavilion, staff from meat processing plant Ovation will give boning demonstrations on the Friday and Saturday. There are also several new exhibitors to check out. Live music will keep crowds entertained as they enjoy a variety of food available from stalls with regional flavours. Palmerston North local, Brew Union, will operate a pop-up bar. Event manager Henry McLernon said the field days are a safe and fun family day out with plenty of entertainment on offer. “There’s something for everyone.”

Field days unite town and country The gates to this year’s Central Districts Field Days open next month, showcasing the latest in rural innovation, agricultural displays, demonstrations and exhibits. From a gathering of 230 sites occupied by exhibitors in 1993, the event has grown to become New Zealand’s largest regional field days. More than 600 exhibitors are now expected at the three-day event. Last year’s event drew a record crowd of more than 27,000 with 60% of those visitors travelling from outside of the Manawatu. Each year, in the lead up to the event, the Manfeild venue in Feilding undergoes a steady transformation in just a few days. As tractors and farm machinery arrive, marquees are set up, and stallholders display their products, the site turns into a bustling community. It’s an opportunity for town and country to come together to enjoy a unique agricultural event. With a range of cutting-edge technology, machinery and equipment, along with the latest rural innovation developments, farmers and townies are certain to find plenty to interest them at the event. Demonstrations, displays, exhibits and live music will entertain the crowds too. Event Manager Henry McLernon said visitors would benefit from being able to connect, discover and experience the future of New Zealand’s primary industries. “It’s exciting to see the transformational impact that innovation

and technology are having on our primary industries. That is reflected in the quantity and quality of exhibitors we have on board this year. The Central Districts Field Days is the perfect place to connect and learn from those who are leaders in their field or forging a new future for the industry.” The ever-popular Central Districts Field Days prize pack returns this year. One lucky visitor will win a Honda XR150cc farm bike, a Brent Smith Trailer and a range of other goodies. Entry is via iPads provided on-site. The jam-packed three-day event will run from March 19 to 21 from 9am to 4.30pm daily. Gates close at 4pm on the final day. Two free car parking areas are available throughout the event with entrances off South Street and

ESTABLISHING THE

BELTEX BREED BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Ben Dawson works with his parents on their 550-hectare lease property running 800–1,300 cattle, 1,500 breeding ewes, 2,000 lambs and it is home to Waihau Sheep Genetics.

“I

run dairy heifers and beef cattle for my parents, they have Friesian cows and Angus bulls for a backup,” says Ben. “It is good having both farms working together it couldn’t be any better, we don’t have bobby calves as every calf is reared and finished as a replacement heifer or beefy. Our system is very productive with little waste. My family are dairy farmers, and I bought my first Suffolk ewes from my uncle in Geraldine when I was 10 years old.” It has been in the last year that Ben has had the opportunity to expand his own breeding stud. “I work for Guy Martin at Livestock Confirmation Ltd, and he also has a Suftex flock selling more than 200

rams a year, this is the source of my ewe stock. There is always something new happening within the sheep industry, and you are always challenging yourself to breed a better animal. It is exciting to see your genetics out there working well for people. “LCL work involves travelling all over the country and helping farmers achieve their goals. We sort their ewe flocks into A and B categories generally on type and conformation. Allowing farmers to put the best ewes to maternal rams to get replacements and the B ewes to a terminal ram. That helps clients increase performance working out ways of getting the most bang for their buck. “I have 250 stud ewes, which are stabilised Suftex and Suffolk sheep.

Stormy Weather and the Effect on Trees

enerally, trees can withstand abnormal weather conditions providing the trees are healthy and in good sound condition.

over the road or powerlines. Some large trees can weigh up to 10 tonne and will cause significant damage if they fail.

Unfortunately, trees grow a lot quicker in New Zealand’s conditions and therefore are not quite as stable as their counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere. I come across large trees which have had their roots disturbed by digging trenches for foundations and putting driveways in. Urban spread and in filling of residential houses ultimately has major effects on the health of large trees.

Arborist training emphasizes the long-term health of trees, and arborists know how to check tree health from the roots to the leaves. Their years of observing how and where different species do or don’t do well can help you decide the right spots for the right trees.

Cutting tree roots can have a significantly detrimental effect on the stability of the tree and its longevity of life. Concreting near trees where their roots have been cut, can cause issues with the tree health where the lime from the cement leaches into the soil and contaminates the area that the tree needs to draw nutrients from. As Arborists we can advise people on the potential risk of having a large tree, whether it is in decline, showing signs of decline, or completely healthy. It may be that the tree is located close to a house, or

Sometimes we suggest that removing some weight from the tree can lessen the chance of the tree failing and certain trees are more susceptible to failing than others, for example a tall single leaded Redwood or Poplar can be a lot stronger than a multiple branched Liquid Amber. If you have a large tree or trees on your property that you would like some advice on, please don’t hesitate to ring us to schedule a time for our head arborist to visit you on site. Stabilising the Suftex has meant a darker sheep aiding colour marking whilst retaining meat and confirmation of a Texel. The Suffolks are good dark sheep that have very high growth whilst still retaining good meat characteristics. “It is quite hard establishing yourself in the sheep industry, but I have been well supported by my family and Guy Martin. At 21 years old, I have been given an opportunity of a lifetime to have a good crack at what I am so passionate about and have invested in very good genetics from around New Zealand. Largely on my own enterprise, I am trying to breed a sound and meaty terminal ram with good head colour and great longevity, a terminal ram that lasts. “It is about management, and I keep stud ewes with commercial ewes to add pressure. I am having a good crack with Beltex genetics after being so impressed by the performance within my own flock. I will be artificially inseminating more than 100 Suffolk ewes this season. It will be the first AI programme in Hawke’s Bay that I know of with pure Beltex and I am hoping to have an auction in two years. “I am looking at Beltex as a meat breed. They are very high yielding, and by lifting your yield percentages, it raises profit immediately. They are different to look at as a pure breed but have performed well in New Zealand conditions. They are easy lambing but vigorous from birth. After the first week, they put a huge amount of weight on

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The Beltex breed originated in Belgium and the lambs are fast-growing

and continue growing rapidly — reaching killable weights quickly and efficiently. It is definitely a breed to watch and have stood out within my flock. People can follow us on our Waihau Sheep Genetics Facebook page and see who we are going. “We are importing a Scottish ram — Beltex is a double muscle Texel from Belgium. They are a white sheep with quite a lot of pigment in their head and breed darker than a Texel, giving the first crosses a dark head. I like

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

to run the stud ewes and lambs with the commercial sheep. Ram and ewe hoggets are bred, and I use rams hoggets over the commercial flock. It gives them experience meaning they breed better as a two-tooth and rams not up to scratch are found early. I would rather a ram doesn’t perform at my place then a client’s. A ram failure gives you a bad name. I also believe there are advantages with leasing rams to people so they don’t have to carry it all year round.”

SWAPPED FOR CHAROLAIS BY DENISE GUNN Moving from Wellington to a remote hill country farm in 1990, with their four young children, was a bold move for Paul and June Crothers.

P

aul was working as a finance manager for a large corporate when he and June decided to buy a farm in Mangamahu. “When we purchased the farm, we were determined to get away from the wind that was everyday life in Wellington,” said Paul. Situated in a sheltered location in the Whangaehu River Valley, the couple added to the original block in 1995 through purchasing flat country off the neighbouring farm. Their farm now covers 550ha, with 350ha in steep hill country and 100ha of terrace flats, along the Whangaehu River. A further 80ha is in established pine forest. The couple’s farming career began as a traditional sheep and beef operation, running close to 4,500 stock units. “As most hill country farms, we struggled to make satisfactory profits,

so we diversified by establishing a flowergrowing business on the farm, we also planted some of our most challenging country in forestry as a retirement plan.” says Paul. During the years, their sheep and beef operation has undergone changes. “Early on, we experimented using different bulls over our Angus/Hereford cows and found that using a Charolais bull provided the best results. Charolais produce crossbred calves that handle our conditions well and are far more profitable than traditional breeds. For the last 10 years or so, we have only used Charolais bulls over our traditional beef cows.” Due to the success with their Charolais-cross cattle, the Crothers ventured into breeding purebreds. In 2014 they bought a group of cows from the Cotswold Charolais Stud near Napier. Since then, they’ve frequented

all the Charolais stud dispersal sales. “Our stud focus has been to breed bulls, which are suitable for use with all farming systems, but in particular will move easily into a steep hill country environment.” The Crothers named their stud, Hill Country Charolais, with this in mind. Paul said many studs claim to raise their bulls on hill country, but terrain varies significantly.

“Our aim is to breed bulls that will survive on some of the steepest hill country farmed in New Zealand.” As Hill Country Charolais has been built on the stock from stud clearing sales, the Crothers have been selective. They buy polled stock with above average EBVs and good constitution. However, most of the cows purchased have not adapted well to their hill property and required culling. Yet their offspring,

raised on hills, have performed well. This process of building a stud herd has taken more time than planned. Calving in mid-July suits the stud’s operation. “Calving is critical to getting calves big enough to compete with other studs. It has meant we need to save a significant amount of grass to break-feed cows precalving, and have plenty of feed for the cows once they have calved.” Previously heifers were mated as twoyear-olds. Now, with most of the yearling heifers more than 400kg, they are put to the bull a year earlier. Last year calving achieved 109%. The Crothers utilise the farm’s flat land primarily for growing crops to finish lambs. Up to 15ha is

also set aside to grow baleage to feed cows prior to calving. The farm’s hill country, with a poor fertiliser history, is being reverted to manuka, which suits their son’s beekeeping business. Monthly rainfall is fairly consistent at around 100ml. Frosts, which used to be common and sometimes severe, have more recently been non-existent. Paul said all bulls had been sold by word-of-mouth with clients impressed with the stocks’ temperament and moving ability. Below-grade stock are sold to the works before their second winter. “We take great personal pride in the animals we produce, and they are

a pleasure to work with. We find the positive feedback we get from our clients is also rewarding. “Charolais are an attractive breed with good temperament, and they cer tainly measure up in the performance stakes.” Paul and June are members of the New Zealand Charolais Cattle Society and find the group supportive. Annual tours of cattle farms around different parts of the country have also been helpful in developing future plans for their stud.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Family farm reaches new heights by Denise Gunn

Te Rohena Farm, in the Horowhenua district, has been farmed by five generations of the Law family.

E

dward Law bought the property, south of Shannon, as heavily forested land in 1907. Gradually, the land was cleared, regrassed and additional property added to the farm. In 1909, Edward passed the farm on to his son Ronald. Together they ran the farm with Ronald later continuing with his son David. Following the purchase of adjacent hill country blocks of land, Te Rohenga covered 1,850 acres by 1933. The farm’s hill country rises to 1,800 feet above sea level. When Ronald passed away in 1965, David carried on farming the land for many years before forming a partnership

with his son-in-law Rob Gaskin. Rob is married to David’s daughter Heather. Rob and Heather bought Te Rohenga from David in 2008. Rob farms alongside his son, Will Gaskin, and son-in-law, Blair Robinson. His daughter, Anna, takes care of all the farm administration. Three generations currently live on the farm — Rob and Heather, Will and his wife Amy, Anna and Blair, and their two children Olivia (eight) and Jonty (five). Anna said Blair is the overall farm manager and main decision-maker while Will manages the stock. “These days Rob does as the boys tell him,” she added.

Blair also works as a livestock agent with Stephen Harris Livestock. “It fits in well with the farming operation and gives us a good insight into market trends — which is advantageous to the farm.” In 1911, Te Rohenga established a Romney stud. A Galloway cattle stud herd, with in-calf heifers among the first draft imported to New Zealand, arrived in 1948. Eventually, David replaced the Galloway herd with a Hereford stud. Before the arrival of modern machinery, David used a four-horse team to pull harrows and discs to prepare the land for pasture. “David spent many hours on bulldozers and tractors in the 1950s and 1960s, clearing land and establishing tracks to make the whole farm accessible by vehicle. The majority of mustering was still done on horseback until approximately 1992 when David reluctantly agreed motorbikes would be faster.” A dairy herd of Jersey cows was introduced in the late 1940s and sold in 1966. The Romneys proved difficult to farm, particularly lambing on hills. With the lambing percentage at just 70–80%, David looked for an easy-care breed. In 1952, he began putting Cheviot rams over Romney ewes to create the Perendale crossbreed. The lambing percentage shot up 20%. The breed’s

founder, Massey University professor, Sir Geoffrey Peren, held a close interest in David’s Heights Stud when it was registered in 1960. “Today, after 68 years of further development, the lambing percentage on the hard hills is at 150%,” said Anna. In the 1980s, Rob introduced deer to the farming operation, originally farming for meat. Thirteen years ago, when Blair and Anna sold their Marton lifestyle property where they farmed velveting stags, the animals were moved to Te Rohenga. Fifteen years ago the family decided to shift to Angus. “The decision to switch to positive fat bulls made it easier doing cows, which suits our higher land,” said Anna. “The ability for the meat to go Angus Pure was also an incentive. All our cows now have Angus Pure tags, and the meat is harvested for Angus Pure.” Cattle are sold at 18 months with heifers retained for breeding. All lambs are finished on-farm and sold to Crusader Meats in Bennydale. Blair and Anna’s environmental focus see close work with Horizons to fence and plant waterways on Te Rohenga’s 2,250 acres. Seventy-four acres of hard hill country is also set aside to plant in Douglas Fir. Other plans include establishing a wetland area with walking track and boardwalk for visitors. This project

The farm’s woolshed, built in 1905, is also used for social gatherings

will be undertaken in conjunction with Koputaroa School. Te Rohenga’s new venture began last winter when an idea formed to set up outdoor experiences for visitors. Heights Experience is owned and operated by Blair and Anna, along with business partner Andrew ‘Huggy’ Hughes, offering clay bird shooting, archery, laser clay shooting and rides in a Can-Am Maverick off-

roader. Anna said Heights Experience is an ideal interaction between farming and tourism. “It works well within the farming operation as it can be run while the farm is working.” The team is also hosting a trail bike ride on Te Rohenga, in conjunction with AFC motorcycles, for side-by-side owners on March 14–15.

Getting pastures growing again

Ace offal cookers for dog and pig food, also available as grain cookers for horses

Dry conditions in many parts of the North Island mean some pastures are in less than ideal condition as autumn approaches. If you have paddocks, which have taken a hiding during summer, now is the time to assess the damage, and work out what’s needed to restore DM productivity before winter. The sooner you act on this, the better. If thin, weak pastures are not already full of weeds, it won’t be very long until they are, which means they won’t grow or feed cows well for the year(s) ahead. “Pasture’s our key feed, so that’s why it’s important to get out now and check all of your pastures, to see how they have fared through summer,” says Barenbrug Agriseeds pasture systems agronomist Jen Corkran. If the damage is severe, eg, ryegrass plants cover less than 50% of the ground, full renewal is the best way to restore these paddocks, either this autumn or if necessary via short term crops to grass next autumn. For larger areas of damage, with too many paddocks for summer cropping in 2020/21, undersowing can really benefit. That entails hard grazing, then drilling ryegrass seed in pastures, without spraying, and works best where

paddocks have thinned out, but are not yet full of weeds. It’s quick and has little effect on cover, so it can be a fast and cost-effective way of boosting growth in these paddocks. “Be aware; however, your results will be compromised if weeds have already gained a good foothold,” Jen advises. Shogun hybrid ryegrass, in particular, has proved ideal for undersowing. New Zealand’s best-selling hybrid establishes as fast as Italian ryegrass, so you get paddocks back to full production, or better – before winter, but Shogun with its NEA endophyte lasts longer than any Italian. The only way Shogun can achieve this performance, however, is

if it has room to grow! For it to fulfil its potential, it must be sown before existing weed seeds in the soil germinate and get a head start.” Sowing in the dry can work really well, as the seed is in the ground ready to respond to the rain. Jen says it’s important to always use coated seed, and monitor for slugs. Common mistakes with undersowing include drilling too deep (10mm), drilling too fast (8km/h), sowing bare speed and sowing at too light a rate. It pays to have a Wrangler Lameness is a major issue estimated to cost the average NZ farm $15,000 a year or $250 for each lameness case. It affects cow welfare, takes time, energy and skill to treat, and has a significant financial cost as lame cows produce less milk, lose weight, and take longer to get back in calf. Good prompt treatment, as well as good stockmanship and surface maintenance, are keys to reducing lameness incidence and severity. Dairy NZ estimates an average incidence of 14% a farm, over an average herd size of 419 cows, equating to almost $15,000 for an average farm. Good facilities mean staff are more likely to give prompt and good lame cow treatment, reducing the impact of lameness in the herd, and therefore making huge cost savings to the farm. A Wrangler lame cow crush will pay for itself quickly in reduced lameness, as well as reducing stress and keeping staff and stock safe. The Wrangler has winches and a back leg support, which holds the leg securely for examination. Belly girths prevent the cow from falling during treatment. The front hoof can likewise be winched on to a support and held in place with webbing. With two feet up, the cow’s head in the headbail, and two belly girths under her she can’t move at all and examination can be conducted quickly, easily, and safely. Calving, caesarian or other procedures can also be performed in the Wrangler. The Wrangler range will be on show at Central District Field

Days site O41. There will be show specials on the units displayed on-site for those first to order. Also on display will be the Ride Over Gate, which is fantastic for centre pivot irrigators and for ease of driving around the farm.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Full steam ahead The Feilding and District Steam Rail Society shares a passion for steam engines with its passengers and the communities visited. In 1996, Feilding train enthusiast Russell Wiseman organised the society’s initial meeting with the focus on rebuilding a steam locomotive. The society leased a WAB794, restoring it for seven years. The completed project was celebrated with a train trip through the Manawatu Gorge in 2003. The society’s main function then shifted to include restoring former NZ Railways locomotives, as well as maintaining and operating heritage equipment. A team of volunteers have restored a steam engine F163 and diesels DSA227, DA1401 and TR13. The locomotives are housed at the society’s Feilding depot. Twelve years ago the main trunk line’s centennial celebrations were centred in Feilding, attracting train enthusiasts from around the world. A large gathering of steam engines was displayed as the Feilding and District Steam Rail Society organised numerous train trips for the occasion. Since then the society has operated regular locomotive excursions around the North Island. Steam Rail volunteer Cam Persson has held an interest in trains from a young age, joining the society 12 years

ago. Cam is involved with many projects around the depot, presently working on the WAB steam locomotive with many other members, to get it back to mainline service. “I gained my boiler certification at Kingston, working on the Kingston Flyer in early 2013. You need that to move through to the driving stage. With knowledge passed on by gentlemen of the railway, they helped me to gain my steam driver’s ticket in 2014, through Feilding Steam.” Feilding Steam currently has six certified boilermen/firemen and three certified steam drivers. KiwiRail operates the steam locomotives on the mainline, but Cam does some of the driving around the depot. He also works for KiwiRail as a locomotive engineer. Cam said some of the highlights since joining Feilding Steam Rail have been travel and working with many different people who enjoy the hobby. He also enjoys the teaching aspect of driving. “It’s always exciting passing on the knowledge that’s been handed down over the years,” he said. The society’s depot in Gladstone Street is generally open on Saturday mornings for the public to view the locomotives. As shunting movements

AG CONTRACTORS Government moves on contractor conditions by Paul Campbell

The employment status of some 140,000 self-employed contractors across New Zealand is now in the government melting pot with submissions closed on February 14 in a public consultation over their job conditions. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is concerned that some contractors are vulnerable to poor outcomes because they lack both the protections offered to employees by law and the power to negotiate a better deal. However, some contractors oppose regulation and have expressed their views accordingly, saying change could increase the cost of business in the country. Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway says some contractors, and particularly dependent contractors, are vulnerable in the workplace. “For example, employees who are labelled as ‘independent contractors’ by their employers miss out on their basic employment rights. Workers who are caught in the grey zone between employee and contractor status are also vulnerable. I have heard stories of contractors who work long hours, in some cases 80 hours a week, or others who receive an income, which works out to be less than the minimum wage once you account for their hours.

Some workers are finding themselves dependent on one employer for all their income, with no flexibility or power to negotiate better conditions. “In some cases, workers are completely unaware that they have been engaged as contractors and not employees. These workers are surprised with tax and ACC bills at the end of the financial year, which they cannot afford. This government is committed to taking action to ensure that businesses treat contractors fairly.“ The ministry says it’s consulting the public on options for change to: • Ensure that workers receive their minimum rights and entitlements • Reduce the imbalance of bargaining power between firms and contractors who are vulnerable to poor outcomes • Ensure that system settings encourage inclusive economic growth and competition The government is now evaluating written submissions and an online survey.

Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway

However, the online discussion of the government proposal raises concerns that the proposed new contracting rules will force tens of thousands of compliant contractors to become ‘employees’ of the entities that they contract to.

“It will affect many industries, rural contractors, skilled trades, professional services, freelancers, consultants, service businesses, real estate agents, taxi drivers, healthcare and many other contractors,” says one contracting

enterprise. “These rules could potentially undo the healthy business relationships contractors have with their customers and the organisations they contract to. The changes under discussion could add a significant cost to New Zealand businesses.” Minister Lees-Galloway says New Zealand currently has one of the highest employment rates in the OECD and near record-low unemployment. “Our GDP growth is better than the OECD countries we like to compare ourselves with. “We know our economy has solid foundations. However, there are problems that have built-up for a number

of decades and led to higher levels of inequality and poverty. “Changes made to our labour market in the 1990s in the name of market flexibility have resulted in structural problems and left too many hard-working New Zealanders struggling to make ends meet. “Some of those changes may have been useful for GDP growth, but they also increased inequality by removing the checks and balances that were needed to ensure all workers had the tools to support their wellbeing in the labour market.“ In a concurrent development, a law change is on the way for contractors

working in New Zealand’s screen sector with these changes actually proposed by industry and largely supported by the government. They will see contractors

allowed to bargain collectively. Government has largely agreed to their recommendations and is now drafting legislation to implement them.

For almost 100 years, Horowhenua-based Trotter Contracting has met the agricultural and horticultural requirements of its clients. The small, family-owned and operated contracting business was established by the late Bill Trotter in 1924. With his team of draught horses, Bill was a trailblazer in the region as he ploughed the land for market gardeners south of Levin. He and his son, Peter, also cleared and developed land in the region following the second world war. Today the company continues to service all agricultural requirements in the Horowhenua and surrounding districts. From lifestyle blocks to farms and commercial growers, no job is too big or too small. Following Peter’s retirement, Garry took over the reins to run Trotter Contracting. Several years ago, Garry’s son Rowan, a qualified diesel mechanic, also joined the team, making him the fourth generation of the family to work in the business. Garry’s wife, Catherine, takes care of the financial and administrative aspects and a further five full-time versatile employees cover the range of work required. During the peak season, casual workers are also employed.

Not many businesses turn 100, and even fewer remain in the hands of the same family. However, Trotter Contracting has withstood the test of time. With four generations of experience in the industry, the family has met changing demands to supply a wide range of fertilising, harvesting and cultivation services including maize and grass silage, large rounds and big square hay and baleage. Garry said the key to the company’s success has been service on demand and the range of work offered. “Our staff are all skilled operators, and we pride ourselves on offering toprate service to all of our customers. Depending on the weather, customers don’t have to wait long for us to get the job done for them.” During the years, as their clients’ requirements have changed and increased, the company has continued FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

to invest in new machinery. Its fleet currently includes a New Holland Forager for maize and grass silage, two New Holland round balers, a New Holland D1010 big square baler, a Webline wrapper, a selection of Fella rakes and tedders, and a fleet of Case tractors. The most recent purchase of a JCB is used for a multitude of purposes. Five spreaders, including two Mercedes 1630s, match the call for bulk fertiliser spreading. Trotter Contracting has a consignment store for both Ravensdown and Hatuma Lime, with a certified weighbridge operating at their Koputaroa bulk site near Levin. “We’ve been around a long time, which gives our customers security, said Garry. “Many of our customers are also family businesses that have been with us for generations.”

Top marks to our firefighters

19

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

by Ian McKelvie MP for Rangitikei

The recent serious fire that rapidly burnt through a forestry block at Santoft near Bulls highlighted a couple of things to me. Firstly, our rural firefighters, both volunteer and full-time, did a wonderful job to bring this blaze under control so quickly in trying conditions. It was a serious incident to the point where Farmland Foods plant was evacuated as a precaution as the fire spread across 80 hectares. At the height of the blaze 11 fire appliances and eight helicopters were part of a superb community effort. It also occurred to me that this could be a sign of things to come in rural New Zealand and it’s a frightening thought. If the policy of encouraging planting trees on current productive farmland continues, then the risk of major blazes becomes a serious threat to New Zealand for many years to come. Whilst I am not opposed to planting trees per se, the wholesale planting that appears to be taking place without planning or thought to the future puts several parts of the country at risk of damage if a major fire broke out. That includes some vulnerable urban areas where adjacent topography and prevailing winds could combine with disastrous results. The recent devastating bush fires in several parts of Australia should also sound a warning to everyone. Whilst controlled burn-offs and burning of low growth beneath trees used to be the norm the practice ceased some years back and so these days this

STAY AFLOAT vegetation provides ample fuel for fires to get a hold. Bring that situation across the Tasman, and you can see the parallel. We have tree planting going on at random with no thought to the future problems and dangers that could confront rural communities in the years to come. For example, there has been little, or no planning or thought put into creating firebreaks to prevent the chances of fires spreading. At the moment, neighbours can suddenly start

planting trees along their fence line without restriction or regard to the fire danger created a few short years later when the trees mature. If more and more land is in less intensive use, then the fire potential becomes huge. The combination of dry grass and sustained hot, dry days increase the risk of fire tearing through forestry blocks in a way that this government hasn’t thought through yet.

Stop rust and protect machinery Come and see us at the field days to see our new Prolan Extreme product. Prolan a New Zealand-made lanolin-based lubricant and corrosion inhibitor is becoming increasingly popular with farmers, engineers, panelbeaters, motorhomers and boaties for its unique ability to adhere to metal and stop rust in its tracks.

Prolan Enduro Medium Grade being sprayed on to an ATV to stop rust

A coating of Prolan Lanolin Enduro Heavy Grade on a vehicle chassis will provide a long-term protective coating, which will help pass WOF and COF checkouts. Many vehicle stations are now recommending a coating of Prolan to cover existing rust and seal it off from air and moisture. This environmentally friendly lanolin coating can be used on farm, marine vehicles, truck, fertiliser spreaders and motorhome chassis to prevent rust. Prolan cannot be removed by cold water blasting; this allows vehicle chassis to be cleaned without removing the rust protection. Prolan Enduro Medium Grade is excellent as a general workshop lubricant and corrosion inhibitor for coating quad bikes and farm machinery. Many farmers find Prolan so versatile as a general workshop lubricant using it to sort seized locks, bolts, chains and squeaky door hinges. Also as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor to spray over existing rust on machinery or to coat a quad bike

or farm mule to prevent the chassis from rusting out. A coating of Prolan for short and long-term protection of machinery stored indoors and outdoors protects assets and increases their resale value. Prolan is easily sprayed using a trigger pack, garden sprayer or airless spray gun. It is recommended to first remove any dirt, flaky rust and allow machinery to dry before application. Once coated, the longer the period between application and vehicle use — the better the surface will stay. On any cosmetic surfaces, Prolan is buffed in with a rag. The product coverage is 8–10 square metres depending on the surface profile. A one-litre can of Prolan will easily protect a quad bike chassis and a four-litre tin a five-metre truck chassis. Prolan a great environmentally friendly product will save time on maintenance and component replacement and longterm will increase machinery life and resale value. It is hard to believe it is off the sheep’s back — taken from nature to protect nature!

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts

I speak daily to people affected by inflammation — this commonly affects joints but can affect most types of body tissue. While we can feel the discomfort of joint inflammation, we cannot feel inflammation of blood vessels till disease symptoms appear. Our immune system responds to injury and sickness by generating inflammation. It is an essential part of our in-built repair and recovery systems. While we cannot heal without inflammation, unwanted inflammation can not only slow healing but create new problems. The long list of problems with the suffix ‘itis’ are all inflammatory diseases. One of the reasons we are told to eat lots of deep coloured plants is that the anti-inflammatory antioxidants are locked into their bright colours. It is the yellow in turmeric that contains curcumin. It is the purple colour on grape seeds that contain the potent OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins). While osteoarthritis is the most common joint problem, others such as tendonitis, bursitis and rheumatoid arthritis affect many people. The centre of any nutritional medicine programme is an anti-inflammatory diet. Adding well-formulated supplements with highgrade ingredients can add healing compounds at levels much higher than

through diet alone. Two of the most potent are curcumin from turmeric and the OPCs from grape seeds. For example, adding 1,000mg of 95% Curcumin is equivalent to several tablespoons of turmeric. You would also need to eat tablespoons of red wine grape seeds to get 100mg of pure OPC. I speak to clients on a daily basis that are more mobile and more comfortable by adding potent natural anti-inflammatory compounds. One with rheumatoid arthritis is much more comfortable by adding 1,000mg of curcumin and 200mg of OPC daily. I have written a comprehensive Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. Please contact me if you would like an email copy. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. BUSINESS PROFILE

Building quality homes With decades of experience designing and building, Branderson Homes has earned a trusted reputation for quality on-site and pre-built transportable homes. Managing director Steve Brown has more than 40 years experience in the building trade. He established Branderson Homes in 1997. Initially, the Cambridge-based residential building company designed and constructed homes for clients in the Waikato area. Twenty years ago, to meet increased demand from all across the North Island, Branderson Homes branched out to build transportable homes. “Our design and build homes are built for clients in the Waikato area, due to the homes usually being on the larger scale and also requiring concrete foundations,” said office manager Kim Stanley. “That is the reason for starting building our transportable homes, so we could provide an affordable home, that could be transported anywhere in the North Island. “Our transportable homes are built within the transport regulations that have a width and length guideline. It does not mean they have to be small homes. We can transport homes from a one-bedroom unit to a four-

bedroom home, with ensuite and walkin wardrobe.” All Branderson homes are built under cover in a purpose-built yard. That ensures there is no downtime due to inclement weather. “Our workmanship speaks for itself,” said Kim. “We have previous clients recommend us to other family members, and we’ve ended up building four other family members homes for them. We also have had a large farming company in the King Country that have come back to us to build further farmworkers’ homes for their farms — six to date.” Project manager Lance Brown oversees the construction of each home built on-site and in the workshop. New clients are welcome to be shown around the company’s workshops at any time to see what goes into building a Branderson Home. A meeting with each client includes discussing the size and style of home they are looking for, either at the Branderson Homes office or client’s property. Kim said their priority is to travel to the client’s site to make sure a house can get to the destination.

Steve’s input in this also assures the homeowners are positioning the home to their best advantage. “It’s because we do all our design work in-house, we can change any plans, or draw up a client’s own design if this meets the regulations for transportation. The clients get to choose all aluminium joinery and roofing colours, and kitchen joinery colours. They are also able to up-spec anything that is not standard

as per our specifications.” Branderson Homes offers the homebuyer peace of mind to have a home built within their budget, along with their input into design and finishes. “It changes what becomes a house into a home,” said Kim. Branderson Homes has recently expanded and built new shedding to accommodate another six undercover bays and a permanent office.

She’ll be right, or will she? by Greg Woollaston, Partner, Dewhirst Law - email: greg@dewhirstlaw.co.nz

“She’ll be right” is the old New Zealand attitude toward anything too difficult, and this is often seen in our remarkably relaxed culture toward the preparation of wills, estate planning instruments and asset protection/relationship property plans. However, this is not quite right, as “she’ll be right” with asset planning can result in costly court processes, significant stress and you being deprived of assets. With the impending changes to the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 it’s an ideal time to look afresh at your exposure, particularly given the majority of the average Kiwi’s equity is generally bound up in their family home, chattels, family vehicles, KiwiSaver or cash savings. All of which, commonly are divided equally during a separation, particularly so if the relationship is of three years duration or longer. It is increasingly important to have in place a relationship property/ contracting out agreement, or preferably, to structure asset estate planning and relationship property agreements as part of an interlinked asset protection and estate planning package. While your structure will need to be determined based on your personal circumstances, if you are new in a relationship and particularly if you are residing as a couple in a home owned by one of you, then consideration needs to be given to a relationship property

agreement to protect your assets. Equally, if you are looking to ensure that your assets pass to your children (instead of your new spouse), and to provide some guidance in how they deal with those assets, then a family trust may be right for you. Whatever your circumstances, in order to avoid the risk of costly litigation and unnecessary stress for your family, it is important that you have at least a current valid will in place. At Dewhirst Law, we have a team of experts, with industr y-leading experience in asset protection structuring, relationship property and family protection/ estate advice. The golden rule: Get it right — See us first! It tends to be much less expensive.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

The games kick off in Palmerston North on Friday, March 13 with the Allflex Clash of the Colleges. This inaugural competition will see budding young farmers from around the lower North Island showcase their skills in 22 agri-challenges. Massey University Young Farmers Club vice-chair and event co-organiser Emma Ractliffe said the competition would see more than 140 teens from high schools around the lower North Island compete. “Teams of four will compete at 22 modules. Everything from milking a cow and plant washdown, to wool classing and body condition scoring, as well as paper-based modules that cover seeds, weeds and fertilisers.” Allflex Asia-Pacific and China chief executive Shane McManaway is delighted to be sponsoring the Allflex Clash of the Colleges. “The agri-sector is full of promise for young people — it is a rewarding career option. The Allflex Clash of the Colleges is all about bringing together young people from across the region to celebrate the sector.” Feilding High School agricultural science teacher Kain Nixon said the competition is about having fun and giving it a go. “Many of our kids with farming backgrounds know that it can be a really isolating industry, and this shows them

how important it is to build a community around them.” The competition will be held in The Square, Palmerston North between 2–4pm. The Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards will also be held on March 13 with an awards dinner in the evening. Finalists from five sections, covering both traditional and newer rural sports, will vie for the titles. “The range of rural sports and the quality of nominees represented this year is fantastic,” said New Zealand Rural Sports Awards judging panel convenor Nathan Twaddle.

“It has certainly made the job of the judging panel very difficult, something we take as a healthy sign of the quality of rural sport at the moment. “The Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards are all about honouring people from young athletes who are just starting, to the lifetime achievers, and those who work away in the background to make sure rural sports survive.” A weekend of traditional sports attracting top competitors from throughout Australasia will follow. National and world champions will compete for a range of New Zealand Rural Games titles.

Stakes in Israeli company

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES February 2020

LIC is to seek shareholder approval to acquire 50 per cent stake for $108.7 million in Israeli agritech company Afimilk. The investment will strengthen LIC’s ability to deliver superior herd improvement services and agritech to its farmers. Afimilk is profitable, has no debt, has historically paid dividends to its shareholders, is a leader in its field, and has been of real interest to LIC for a number of years. “The investment will help give LIC access to the data it needs to deliver superior herd improvement services and agritech for New Zealand farmers into the future and will improve access to on-farm technology solutions,” says LIC chair Murray King. “It is vital we keep our world-leading edge in pastoral dairy farming data while broadening access to new information to meet future needs and challenges. The proposed investment in Afimilk will do both. It will help ensure LIC’s ongoing access to pastoral dairy farming data through the increased use of in-line milk meters and animal monitoring systems such as collars. “We believe there are likely to be further development opportunities for in-line milk meters, to increase LIC’s resilience to the threat of disruption to access to pastoral dairy farming data posed as a result of the move away from traditional herd-testing services. “The investment will also help to drive future growth by opening LIC’s access to data on other farming methods beyond pastoral held by Afimilk.

Access to Afimilk’s resources and information on other farming methods will assist LIC to develop genetic programmes for the farming systems of the future.” The $108.7 million purchase price will be funded primarily through new debt under LIC’s current facilities, with the investment intended to be selffunding via projected dividend streams (in the absence of significant adverse economic events and unforeseen expenditure requirements). The 50 per cent stake will ensure an equal say in governance and strategy. The company, based in Israel, has a global presence across all its products and solutions, with particular success in regions of intensive dairy farming. Afimilk is widely regarded as one of the industry-leading producers of milk meters, behaviour sensors and farm management software, with particular strength in having strong distribution across Europe and North America. Mr King says LIC has built a strong platform for growth during the past four years with solid financial results. “It includes ensuring the co-operative has the financial headroom to achieve innovation-led growth. While the proposed investment will be subject to Afimilk’s performance and the

BUSINESS PROFILE

Endeavour trains students for workforce Since rebranding in 2017, Endeavour Technical Training (ETT) has seen scores of students complete automotive training and head out into the workforce. Formerly known as Mara Marketing, the business began in 1930 as an automotive workshop. ETT is still an automotive workshop but now provides free education, to young people as well as adults, through pre-apprenticeship training, NCEA literacy and numeracy programmes, along with driving development to its students. John Brunsden is the school’s director and owner. ETT school manager Peter Robson said students under 20 years of age are offered a Youth Guarantee free course. Those more than 20 years of age can train on the Fees Free scheme subject to their eligibility. “Approximately 60 students have completed their training with 20 students set currently to finish within 2020,” he said. “The aim of ETT is to provide automotive training and help our students into a career in automotive, or an area where they can use their new skills. We do this not only by being an educational space to learn theory and practical, but also a functioning workspace environment, building

workplace skills from health and safety to showing up on time. “A range of courses are available with an NCEA level two programme, which is the first step into automotive while working towards achieving the National Certificate of Educational Achievement second level. “We also have our level three preapprenticeship programme, which is approximately a one-year course, equalling the first year of apprentice training. During these courses, students are entered into one-day work placements to gain valuable experience outside the class, with partnering employers in the community to help towards developing apprentices.” At any one time, ETT has between 25 to 30 students enrolled with three tutors offering support. Mr Robson said the training school offers a rolling intake year-round where students can start with a two-week taster any week of the year. From its Edgeware Road base in Palmerston North, ETT has its own fully equipped and functioning workshop for training purposes only.

Endeavour Technical Training has seen scores of students complete automotive training and head out into the workforce

“However, we allow our students to use and develop their skills, not only with our course vehicles but also their own.” ETT also offers training courses to secondary school pupils in the area. The facility is located next to Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Queen Elizabeth College. The training school also works with other producers from Youth Services to help young people onto a career path.

“We endeavour to keep expanding relationships with the community and a holistic approach. Recently ETT started working with the National Driving Training Centre to help students on the next leg of their driving development. Whether that be getting their learners or going for their full licences.” ETT also plans to offer more chances for students to work with agricultural machinery and pursue a path into farming.

Improving the deer industry

Deer Industry NZ has beefed-up its farmer services with the appointment of Phil McKenzie as manager farm performance, a new position that was created following the appointment in late 2019 of former Passion2Profit manager Innes Moffat as chief executive. “Phil is now managing the on-farm components of the industry’s Primary Growth Partnership programme, P2P, as well as the development of DINZ’s farmfacing services. In these roles he works closely with DINZ producer manager Tony Pearse and environmental stewardship manager Lindsay Fung,” says DINZ chief executive Innes Moffat.

“We are increasingly focussing the on-farm side of the P2P programme on helping our farmers improve water quality and biodiversity, and to meet climate change obligations. Meeting market and social expectations for animal and environmental management will enhance the value of the industry. Deer farmers have long been leaders in good

environmental practice. The challenge is to fit that good practice into a framework that complies with district plans and new and proposed legislation.” Originally from a farm in Southland, Mr McKenzie has worked in many regions throughout New Zealand, and overseas. He has deep farm systems knowledge and extensive agribusiness experience, including valuable experience with Pamu, where, in his most senior role, he was a general manager with responsibility for the environment. For the past 12 months, he has worked parttime for DINZ as the P2P environment project manager.

“With others in the DINZ team, I have been helping groups of farmers complete their Farm Environment Plans. This work will continue. Our formula of bringing together groups of deer farmers, where they can learn from each other, with the support of skilled consultants, is working well,” he says. “I have been impressed by the spirit of innovation among deer farmers, their ambition to excel and their willingness to collaborate. There is, of course, much still to be done, which is what excites me about this new role — working with others to design practical on-farm solutions that work.”

Honey makes a home

Rory and Hannah O’Brien began their rapidly expanding Hunt and Gather Bee Co as a result of changing from the dairy industry to do something different. by Ann van Engelen

“W

e started out dairy farming but couldn’t see much of a future in it, so Rory applied for a job working with bees, and enjoyed the change and we have never looked back,” says Hannah. “The original job was in Queenstown, and he loved it from the start, so we sold our house, bought some hives and started our own operation on a smaller scale. We moved from Cromwell to Coromandel where Rory had secured a new beekeeping job, and we had a baby on the way.” It wasn’t until they relocated to Raglan that they focussed more on their own brand, which has become very successful. “We now have more

than 200 hives and sell our honey at various Hamilton, Cambridge, and Raglan farmers’ markets, retail stores and we also make beeswax food wraps. This summer, we introduced a half-day beekeeping experience where people learn about the hives, put on a bee suit and work first-hand with bees.” Starting out wasn’t short of hurdles with Hannah discovering she is severely allergic to bee stings when she is pregnant. “I had a severe reaction to a sting and the nurses told me to ‘stay away from bees’, but we had just bought 24 hives. I was never going to do the fieldwork anyway but focus on the sales distribution and marketing. A bee never

stings for no reason. It is, generally, because you have hurt it by standing on it or touching it. This is our fifth summer. The first two seasons had unusual weather, and we had budgeted on the honey averages of other bee companies, but we got quite a bit less. It taught us to budget on the worst-case scenario and then we had two really good seasons. “We love that honey is a sustainable industry, and the bees are doing good things, you are not really taking anything from the land. “We cold process our honey so it still has a lot of nutritional value. We use glass jars as we are keen to stay away from plastic and only use wooden frames. This season we are selling honeycomb as well. We take a whole comb from the hive and cut it to size. It is a culinary experience older people remember it as children and constantly ask for. Our hives are on other people’s land. Half are in the Coromandel and half are around Raglan as a safeguard if a season is bad on one coast the other may be fine. This year Raglan was super windy and didn’t perform that well — but the Coromandel did great. It also provides other varieties of honey as well. “At times, volunteers help to harvest the honey. They are usually people interested in beekeeping that come and stay with us to gain experience. We had about 20 people visit in the past year. One man comes for his holidays from overseas as he enjoys being busy and learning.” The honey is taken to be extracted and packaged in Katikati and distributed by the O’Briens.

Having the hives in various locations gives the family a wider variety of honey flavours “Our packing runs are a few thousand jars at a time. For anyone wanting to get into the honey industry, look at the setup costs, triple them and don’t expect to make a lot of money for a couple of years. If you don’t really love it, then it will feel like you aren’t getting much reward. If you do really love it, stick at it.” Hunt and Gather Honey has won several awards including silver in the Outstanding Food Producers award, the Best Emerging Business at the Rural Woman NZ Business Awards and runner-up for the best honey in the New Zealand Farmers’ Market Awards. “The key to good honey is bees that are well cared for, happy and have everything they need. Make sure through the spring they have plenty of food available so when honey season

starts they are strong, and the queens can lay well. Manage against the varroa mite to avoid getting the disease in the hives and during summer, make sure they have plenty of room to store the honey. Keeping it small scale is helpful as you can get around them easier. “Bees are a cool type of livestock to work with. They generally stick to themselves and are easy going most of the time. “The tourism idea helps us diversify the business. We enjoyed dairy farming but moving to beekeeping was a good choice as it is still agriculture, seasonal and working together. It is just a different type of animal and industry. “The returns are not as good as dairy farming but it has been a good family lifestyle change.”

Commitment brings reward by Ann van Engelen

Life Member of the NZ Dog Trial Association, Merv Cameron, was born at Invercargill and in 1952 moved to a small dairy farm in Kaitaia until leaving at 15 years old when he was offered casual work.

“I

did farm work, fencing, forestry and other jobs until the late 1980s when I took a job at the new, to-be-built Juken Triboard Mill and stayed there for 31 years,” says Merv. “I always had an interest in working dogs and was a foundation member of the Mangonui Sheepdog club. “My first dog was Cap, and he was a very capable animal, and I now realise he knew more than me. “I trained him from a youngster, and he gave his best and rarely failed to complete the event. It got me hooked on trialling.” Merv has owned many dogs in the past 61 years, mainly Heading dogs as he didn’t have the right type of work for Huntaways.

“I only have 1.7 hectares, and for 40-years, I used a treadmill to exercise the dogs, and they loved it. Three at a time would jump on and stay on at a fast walk for an hour at a time. That kept them fit for the hill trials, which I always competed well in and was fairly successful. I had wins at every trial in Northland and gained placings in many New Zealand Championship finals, which have been very satisfying. “I breed most of my dogs and either sell pups or train them to sell on. I know of at least 12 dogs that I bred competing for other trialists. I have also exported dogs to Sweden. One dog, Midge, was runner-up in the Swedish Championships some years ago. Others went to work on farms including with

reindeer successfully. Although I am now retired, I still have nine dogs — five, which I trial with two older retired dogs and two pups. I will possibly be selling three to be able to keep raising young ones. “When the club was formed at Kaitaia, I was part of the team, and in 1959 we became a standard trial at Victoria Valley. I didn’t have a dog but helped with the chores, and that was when I was given Cap, who was a young dog. He scored my first open win in either 1960 or 1961. “I also reluctantly agreed to take over, as after the first year and fifty-nine years later was still the club secretary. “We removed an old shed that was gifted to the club, and we rebuilt it on skids. It became our clubhouse for many years until it was falling to bits, but with not much money to play with I decided to raffle a five-month-old heading dog I had bred. We made up books of 10 tickets at $2 each and sent some to every club across the country, and as a result, our club made $4,000. “Kaitaia Hospital had some corrugated iron advertised, and I was successful in buying it. “My brother and I had poles and timber, and with voluntary labour, we built a new clubhouse, which still stands beside number one highway today albeit as a farm shed. As our club is the most northern in New Zealand, we always aimed to have workable sheep so competitors would come back and I feel we have certainly achieved this. “Most years, I have sold a dog or pups to help the club survive financially. One year my dog Harry ran at Tux Kaitaia at eight and a half months and scored 94 points.

Merv has been involved with breeding and competing in sheep dog trials for more than 60 years

“He was immediately auctioned off for $3,200 to Neville Child and has gone on to win two NZ titles. Six years ago we bought calves, which we raised to rising two-year-olds to raise funds for the club as well. “I have been at most levels of the NZ Dog Trial network, was Northland president for 10 years and on the NZ council. Helping younger people has always been a priority, and it is amazing to see so many ladies joining the sport, they are quick learners. “I have done my very best in helping young judges across the country and wrote a Judges’ Guideline booklet and have received a NZ Dog Trials Lifetime

Membership, which I was not expecting. Age is catching up with me, and although the spirit is still there, it is time to sit back and keep a dog to run when I feel like it and not be too involved in running trials. I have been very fortunate that my wife Gail and daughter Carey have given me their wholesome support all these years and allowed me to follow my dream. “We have made many friends throughout New Zealand, and that is something that we will always treasure.”

The industry and the virus

The coronavirus outbreak has already impacted the forestry industry in New Zealand, as harvesting crews and log export ports fall silent and forest owners eye the Chinese market with trepidation. The New Zealand Forest Owners Association says there is industry concern with China by far the largest and most important market for New Zealand’s export logs, and by value, New Zealand earns half its export income from China. The coronavirus outbreak comes on top of new supplies of softwood into China, due to the salvage of insect and wind storm damaged spruce forests in Central and Eastern Europe. Warmer winters and longer summers have led to very high rates of spruce

beetle infestation with large areas of forests being clear-felled and salvage logs railed and shipped to China. In the coming year, exports of bushfire damaged pine logs from Australia also have the potential to increase the softwood supply to China. Association president Peter Weir says: “We know from our embassy in Beijing that the Chinese central government authorities are doing an excellent job of both trying to protect people from the spread of coronavirus and at the same time ensuring economic activity is

sustained. Nobody knows how long and widespread the coronavirus outbreak will be and what effect that will have on any medium-term trade. We are most concerned about the effect on the harvesting workforce in many regions of New Zealand, which depend on log exports.” “Forest owner capacity and circumstances vary hugely. Those owners who supply domestic sawmills will be largely unaffected. However, the domestic market can only take less than half the current annual harvest and not all log grades.” “Stockpiling logs is not a good option, because the logs deteriorate, especially at this time of the year, and unrestrained supply from here is a market threat.” Weir says the industry leadership is closely working with MPI and Te Uru Rakau, supported by the New Zealand embassy in Beijing on the rapidly evolving situation. The Forestry Industry Contractors Association CEO, Prue Younger confirmed contractors are being told to halt felling trees. “The industry is reeling a bit as you would expect,” she said. “Although market prices were on their way down again, the coronavirus impact has made this a very complex situation.

Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir

It’s important that we’ll be working with forest owners daily and ascertain the extent of this fallout and how long our crews might expect to be out of work.”

Gifting a diamond Auckland jewellers Mark and Pamela Beckett are giving away a two-carat diamond valued at $12,000 as a way of showing their love and support for dairy farmers and their appreciation for the work they do every day of the year, and in all weather. “It’s not just any old diamond. It is a rare green diamond, and quite possibly the only one in New Zealand,” says Mr Beckett. The diamond is the prize in a promotion organised by DairyNZ. In his decades as a jeweller, Mr Beckett has only once before had a green diamond. He came across this diamond in a collection of estate jewellery in Australia where it had been part of a family collection for several generations. “Our lives during the past 40-plus years have revolved around precious gems, and we believe Kiwi dairy farmers are gems too. We reckon this rare green diamond is the perfect way to celebrate our dairy farmers who are committed to caring for our land and environment, and, we believe, just like diamonds, that they are here forever.” The Becketts both hail from dairy farming families. Mark was raised on a dairy farm in Matamata in the dairy heartland of the Waikato, while a child, Pamela often visited her grandparents’ dairy farm. The land that is now part of Auckland Airport. “Even back then, our farming families had a long-term view of environmental stewardship. Everything my father did on the farm was to care for the land and his animals,” says Mr Beckett.

“It’s my opinion that dairy farmers are more environmentally green than most. Certainly greener than many non-farming people because of the work they do to protect the environment. “We see some dairy farmers getting bad press for allegedly stuffing up the streams and their cows get the blame for global warming. “We saw the opportunity to give away this appropriately green coloured diamond to thank the good farmers for their hard work, both as stewards of the land and also in bringing us milk. It feels like the natural thing for us to do.” DairyNZ’s general manager farm performance, Vanessa Winning, says she is touched by the Becketts’ appreciation for dairy farmers. “This is such a thoughtful gift — a true surprise and delight for farmers. While we receive praise and recognition for the work our farmers and their teams are doing on-farm and in their surrounding communities — this is the first time anyone has expressed their admiration and thanks in this way.” Until March 10, anyone can nominate a dairy farmer they feel is worthy of receiving the diamond. Go to dairynz.co.nz/diamonds — the winner will be announced between March 16 and 18. Now Stocking the Hobbit Stove for tiny spaces

February 2020  MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

An Open Letter to The Right Honourable Winston Peters Mr Peters, what are you doing? On December 5th, 2019, you introduced the Racing Industry Bill to Parliament. It contains a number of truly disturbing clauses, which would give the racing industry unprecedented powers to seize the assets of local racing clubs. The Bill contains these words:“The racing code may determine that a racing club is no longer racing …” “A racing club no longer racing may be dissolved …” “This section applies if a racing club is dissolved by any means … The assets of the racing club remaining (after all creditors’ claims on the club have been satisfied) vest in the racing code with which the club was registered.” The Governor-General may, by Order in Council made on the recommendation of the Minister, (a) approve a proposal prepared by the racing code relating to the transfer of the surplus venue to the code (a transfer proposal), with or without modification; and (b) state the date on which the transfer takes effect.” “The Registrar-General must, on written application by a person authorised by the Minister, (a) register the racing code as the owner of the fee simple estate in the surplus venue in substitution of the racing club; and (b) record any entry on the record of title, and do anything else that may be necessary to give effect to this subpart.” “The transfer proposal may provide that the racing club is to transfer the surplus venue to the racing code without receiving in return any, or an equivalent, asset.” And this:- “The transfer of the surplus venue must not be regarded as placing the racing club or the racing code, or any of its officers, employees, or agents, in breach of any Act, rule of law, or agreement that would otherwise apply.”   So far 20 racing clubs have been identified as no longer adding value to the industry if they continue to race on their home tracks,  and if the new Racing Bill is adopted as presented to Parliament in December, they could have all of their assets and land seized with no payment whether they agree or not. This follows the Messara Report — which advised the shutting down of twenty regional racecourses around New Zealand, including Dargaville, Avondale, Thames, Rotorua, Wairoa, Stratford, Hawera, Waipukurau, Woodville, Reefton, Greymouth, Hokitika,  Motukarara, Timaru, Kurow, Oamaru, Waimate, Omakau, Winton, and Gore.  Of these, Thames, Wairoa, Stratford, Marlborough, Dargaville, Winton, Westland, Waimate, Winton and Avondale have been identified as first of the clubs that will potentially be stripped of their assets if this bill is passed in its current form.   We understand that the Racing Industry has problems. We understand you and your advisors are trying to find a solution. But  surely, seizing the assets of local, community based racing clubs is not the way. Certain clauses in the Racing Industry Bill before parliament would seem to open the door for just that — the overriding of individual club’s constitutions, the seizing of ownership from local hands, and the appropriation of community assets that have been renamed ‘industry assets’. These are, in many cases, assets built up over more than a century by local clubs and local people on land donated by local people. Many pre-date the ‘industry body’ which now plans to seize them. It is just wrong.   Legal property ownership is a cornerstone of our society. We will not have what we’ve worked to build taken away with no legal  recourse. Every year on Anzac Day we commemorate the fallen, who gave their lives to ensure that we live in a free democratic country where no club, and no person, in any industry, in any town or city, should live in fear of the seizure of their assets by the state. One stroke of the legislative pen stripping them of ownership and the rights thereof … it’s not the Kiwi way. Maybe in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. Maybe in Pol Pot’s Cambodia. But not in New Zealand, under a democratically elected government. Mr Peters, it falls to you as Minister of Racing to ensure that this bill is amended and remove any chance that this country should be besmirched with the kind of dictatorial avarice which is the hallmark of failed states.  The racing industry might need a hand. But first, it needs to know; HANDS OFF our local racing clubs and their assets.  It’s legalised theft, it’s wrong, and it must stop here.

Eco farming concept closes the loop

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

by Andy Bryenton

This year saw a new category instigated in the Tractor of the Year awards at Europe’s Agritechnica — a top prize for sustainable tractors. The inaugural winner goes above and beyond reducing fuel consumption or relying on electricity alone, however. New Holland decided to take a whole-farm approach with their T6 tractor concept. It means a closedloop, removing harmful gases from the atmosphere and using them instead to power a full-sized, diesel equivalent working tractor. As their engineer explains: “The T6 Methane Power tractor is a key element in New Holland’s Energy Independent Farm Concept, closing the loop of a true circular economy, from fields to energy generation and back to fields in a complete CO2—neutral cycle.” “Farmers can grow energy crops and use agricultural waste to generate biomethane, and power their T6 Methane Power tractor with this sustainable fuel, achieving near-zero CO2 emissions. Livestock and dairy farmers can take this virtuous cycle even further by producing biomethane from manure, which subtracts CO2 from the environment, resulting in a carbonnegative footprint. Farmers can also use the by-products of biodigestion as natural fertilisers on their fields, closing the circular economy loop.” Yes, that’s right; the future of farming propulsion may very well be based on poo. An issue, which has caused massive consternation and arguments

over taxation, legislation and farming costs may be swept away by new technology, turning allegedly climatecooking waste into efficient fuel. It’s no weakling wither, delivering 180hp and 720Nm of torque with 30 per cent less running costs than an equivalent common rail turbo diesel.

41

call 0800 436 566 or visit www.dolomite.co.nz

Of course, there’s an investment of biomethane producing infrastructure along with the tractor itself. However, in the long run, this could be the way all farming is done.

A clean sweep for woolsheds Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark Turton along with his wife Megan, has been servicing the Tararua area for over 30 years with their fencing business. Wanting to further assist their clients with farm maintenance, four years ago they introduced their new business Clean Sweep Woolsheds to the farming sector. After many years in development, the Clean Sweep Machine was launched at the Mystery Creek Fieldays under new innovations — a machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure. “I was giving a friend a hand to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. It was a wet day, and we were spending all our time unblocking the machine. I thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t.” Mark came up with a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system, which goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, the machine is hauled out and emptied. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by using the Clean Sweep machine, you don’t have to be amongst it.” The system is highly versatile, being used for any type of woolshed, even the lowest of sheds. The Clean Sweep

machine is also ideal for cleaning the hard count-out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket set up they can clear away deposits on the under cover yards. Moreover, because the bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed, it is not labour intensive, so is fast and cost-effective. It is important for woolsheds to be clean, Mark says. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. It also decreases wool staining, and most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is a great fertiliser that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on to their paddocks.” There is a huge variety of woolsheds around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed, count-out pens or covered yards for a while, give Mark a call and he will provide you with a free quote. Phone 0800WOOLSHED or 0800 966574. Improving the farming business NZ Farmers Livestock Ltd is a 100% New Zealand owned and operated livestock company that prides itself working with farmers, for farmers, for more than 100 years. NZ Farmers Livestock brings extensive experience gained through trusted and long-established relationships with the rural community. They are proud to be active in the Manawatu region. The services they excel at and offer at their Rongotea Saleyard is second to none. A personalised solution, along with attention to detail is promised to each individual client, big or small. NZ Farmers Livestock (NZFL) also has a live streaming feature from their Rongotea sale yards. General manager Bill Sweeney says this provides an exciting new opportunity for farmers and has improved visibility, transparency and access. He says they’re in an exciting space in the livestock industry where they’re continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the technical space.

Pay attention!

“Our live streaming provides our clients with the ability to keep on top of the livestock game right from wherever it suits them best.” Manawatu regional manager Malcolm Coombe says NZFL have overcome technical challenges to bring the live streaming as a first of its kind in the NZ livestock space. There is a slight time lag, so users are encouraged to view the live streaming while engaging with a livestock agent to give them instructions to act on their behalf at the sale. The streams are live every Wednesday, and will soon cover other sales at the yards. Events and live streams can be found at mylivestock.co.nz. Tractor of the Year is a hefty title, and in its 23rd year of being awarded, the title has been split into three denominations. Judges at the vast European Agritechnica festival, along with the reviewers from Italy’s Trattoti magazine, say that this is to reflect the vast range of tasks, which modern tractors undertake, from specialist harvesting through to pulling the heaviest of implements. This year, two of the three top prizes went to one company. Fendt has been making tractors for decades, and are no strangers to the awards podium. A double one-two has given the Germans real cause to celebrate, and now the pair of winners are poised to roll into New Zealand for our own round of field days and A&P shows. Winner of the overall Tractor of the Year title was the Fendt 942 Series, delivering more than 400 horsepower despite also exhibiting stunningly low emissions and fuel consumption. The big Fendt is engineered to achieve maximum torque at lower rpm with its nine-litre turbo diesel, and, in another 21st-century advancement, it’s also been designed to operate remotely, with many of its functions able to be slaved to exterior digital devices. As the big Fendt takes the number one spot on the podium, its ‘baby brother’ the 314 Vario swept up honours in the Utility Tractor class. These smaller machines are valued for their ability to multi-role about the farm, so a massive range of PTO options

is key. The mid-weight 314 Vario comes equipped with a dynamic performance system that boosts output power, even when the tractor is stationary. It’s also packed with customisable control options, making it easier than ever to adapt as a ‘Swiss army knife’ of a machine. While the 25 judges, gleaned from a panel of international agricultural

reviewers and writers, picked a New Holland for spot number three, it’s still a mighty win for Fendt, who have invested a substantial amount into research and development in recent years. The overarching award for all of Europe has been mirrored by national accolades in countries like Poland and Croatia.
