A number of changes are being considered to the preferred option initially put forward in the consultation booklet in May, including adjusting the proposed minimum shareholding requirement for farmers and enabling sharemilkers and contract milkers to own shares. “It’s a good time for the board to step back and reflect on the feedback as most farmers will now be busy with calving,” says chairman Peter McBride. “Once they have come through this particularly busy time of the season, we will be ready to consult on the updated proposal.” Consultation has been extensive to date. Since May 6, directors have held 90 farmer meetings, attended events such as the My Connect conference and Fieldays®, as well as leading seven online webinars and speaking with many farmers directly. More than 5,000 farmers have directly engaged through feedback channels, in addition to discussing the options with each other. Members of Fonterra’s board and management have also talked with other groups such as the Co-operative Council, formerly the Shareholders’
Council, the Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund, the government, major banks and rural professionals. This engagement will continue as the consultation progresses. “We would like to thank our farmer owners for getting involved and approaching the consultation with open minds. “We also want to acknowledge the uncertainty that comes along with us considering changes to our capital structure and the significant challenges that it’s creating for some farmers. The best way to give certainty is to ensure we have a full discussion as a co-op and get to a quality outcome. “The board maintains its belief that, in a flat or potentially declining milk environment, making changes early will put us in the best position to provide farmers with more flexibility while protecting farmer ownership and strengthening our co-op’s financial sustainability.” Many farmers said that additional information on the co-op’s business strategy and future performance would help them form a clearer view of capital structure. Further information is available at fonterra.com/capitalstructure.

Central Districts Field Days called off
3
by Denise Gunn
This year’s Central Districts Field Days has been cancelled, joining the growing list of events axed due to Covid-19. Central Districts Field Days event director Henry McLernon said due to Covid-19 restrictions and the uncertainty of how long the Omicron variant would be active in the community — the field days will not go ahead. “Although we considered a postponement as a potential option, we cannot confidently confirm a date in the current climate. “We’re gutted we won’t be able to showcase the best New Zealand has to offer within the primary industries at Central Districts Field Days 2022.” The three-day event, New Zealand’s largest regional field days, was to be held in Feilding on March 17–19. Last year it drew 30,200 visitors, with 17,000 of those from outside the region. Exhibitors also travel from around New Zealand to set up and showcase their businesses on-site. “Our exhibitor numbers were tracking well and in line with previous years. Those that were waiting to book closer to the event were hospitality vendors already hit by the impact of Covid. Exhibitor response to the cancellation has been incredibly supportive,” said Mr McLernon. As a result of this year’s cancellation, economic benefits to the region will also take a big hit. In recent years, more than $50 million in sales revenue was generated with $13 million in sales for Manawatū businesses. Electronic card spending for the Manawatū region was up 13.4% in March last year, while overall spending in
This year’s Central Districts Field Days has been cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions
New Zealand was up just four per cent compared to March 2020. Major events such as the Central Districts Field Days significantly contributed to this muchneeded growth. Spending in cafes, restaurants and bars was up 68% compared to a 38% nationwide increase. It was followed closely by takeaways up 49% in the region, which was more than the 38% throughout New Zealand. While the country saw a decline in accommodation by eight per cent, regional figures increased by 32%.
The 2020 Central Districts Field Days were also cancelled to the first Covid-19 nationwide lockdown. Since the inaugural event in 1993, the field days have grown to become a one-stop shop for those working in New Zealand’s primary industries. It’s
an opportunity for visitors to keep upto-date with the latest technology and developments in rural innovation. The event also attracts townies. “We are looking forward to planning a sensational and safe event in 2023 when it will be the 30th year,” said Mr McLernon.

RAISING RARE
BREEDS BY DENISE GUNN
Rare breeds on Clare Randall’s Manawatū lifestyle block are growing in numbers with Dexter cattle, Valais Blacknose sheep and the recent arrival of Arapawa goats.
C
lare first became involved with rare breeds when she bought a few Dexters about 16 years ago. “The breed appealed because it is a small breed, easier on the clay country and easier to manage, are friendly and have lovely personalities,” said Clare. Last year’s addition of Arapawa goats to the menagerie came from a friend in the Pohangina Valley. “She’s been breeding them for a few years, and the idea of saving a rare breed that is super cute and full of character appealed.” Considered to be one of the rarest goat breeds in the world, the Arapawa is critically close to extinction. There are less than 500 recorded worldwide.
When Valais Blacknose sheep caught Clare’s eye three years ago, she was immediately drawn to the breed. The purchase of two English Leicester in-lamb ewes from Valais Blacknose breeder Christine Reed in the Wairarapa soon followed. “Both ewes had ram lambs, so not a good start,” said Clare. A further purchase of an F1 ewe lamb from Christine proved more fruitful. The ewe, Audrey, had her first lamb last year. Clare’s second year of breeding Valais Blacknose was also successful with her English Leicester and Romney ewes producing ewe lambs. Last spring saw the arrival of 11 lambs, but only two of those are ewe lambs.
To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!
“I leased a ram and hosted another friend’s ewe for tupping. She had a ewe lamb, so has an F3 now.” With the recent arrivals, flock numbers have increased to five F1 ewes, one F2 ewe lamb, lots of wether lambs, and a couple of friendly wethers from previous years in need of a new home. Clare said her greatest challenge is keeping numbers realistic as she would like to keep them all. Raised on sheep and beef farms in the Wairarapa, Clare grew up around livestock. At 12, she headed to boarding school, followed by university to study towards a pharmacy degree. Clare holds a Master of Clinical Pharmacy, a Master in Palliative Care and is the chief executive of Arohanui Hospice.
Clare plans to continue grading up her flock
Those early rural connections to the land and livestock remain entrenched, along with Clare’s passion for animals.

“I am an amateur. My sister, who lives down the road, is far more accomplished, and she helps me a lot.” Clare has also found room on her lifestyle block to graze Farming for Hospice weaner cattle. A scheme that plays a crucial role to raise money for Arohanui Hospice. Valais Blacknose is a hardy breed of domestic sheep, originating in the mountainous region of Valais in Switzerland. Embryos were first imported to New Zealand in 2017. Although the wool from this dual-
purpose breed is suitable for carpets and felting, its distinctive features and friendliness make the Valais Blacknose extremely popular. Clare said the breed is reasonably easy-care, and are super-friendly animals, following her around when she carries a bucket. When Audrey was a lamb, she made an appearance at the hospice too, as Clare took her along for a visit. “She was so well behaved,” she said. Tails are left on the lambs, and there haven’t been any issues with fly strike or dirty sheep.

Clare added Arapawa goats to her menagerie last year
Clare has always had a passion for animals, developing a special interest in rare breeds
“They need shearing twice a year, and I do take particular care with their feet as the wet clay soil is not ideal.” Grading up to reach purebred Valais Blacknose is one of Clare’s priorities with her flock. “This year, I hope to get to F3, then F4 and purebred the year after. I need to sell
some wethers, then concentrate on the grading–up of the Valais.” Clare is a member of the Rare Breeds Conservation Society and has plans to build up her Arapawa herd too. “I also want to breed from Alice the Arapawa goat this year. I will downsize my Dexter breeding operation as I move more into sheep and goats.”

THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL
BY DENISE GUNN The family dairy farm has inspired themes for Sophie Coleman’s sculptures, is a place to hunt for materials and provides the space to create.
G
rowing up on the farm, Sophie was always outdoors among the cows or in the cowshed. As calving fell during her school or university holidays, she was happy to pitch in and lend a hand. “Working on the farm during the day and then working on my assignments to the late hours of the night, university breaks weren’t exactly breaks. However, spending time out in the fresh air with the cows always helped keep a refreshed mind for school work.” As Sophie had a mathematical and problem-solving mind, computer science seemed the logical study and career path to follow. She graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in computer science.
During her studies at Massey University, Sophie was still able to help out on the farm
Studying at Massey meant Sophie was also on-hand as an emergency relief milker on her family’s northern Manawatū farm. Just over a year ago, Sophie began working in a software developer position for farm-monitoring business Levno. She mostly works on the Levno for Partners user interface, used by milk and fuel

“I had always enjoyed painting and drawing. It wasn’t until the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival that I decided to try my hand at building a sculpture. Anyone can have a go at creating something, and that’s what drove me to try to build my own. “I really admire what the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival is all about; encouraging people, especially farmers, to allow time to explore their creativity. “Mental health in farmers is such an important topic, and I love how the festival creates a community to celebrate the giveit-a-go attitude, allowing people to share a part of themselves within their art.” Her first sculpture, a giant dandelion titled Big Wishes, took close to five months to build. Sophie worked on it while back on the family farm over the end-of-year university break, repurposing corrugated iron, pipe from broken gates, wire and a ballcock. “I used material from the farm to create a giant dandelion at a scale of 200:1, standing at six metres tall.” Sophie entered Big Wishes in the 2019 festival, winning the New Zealand Creative Cocky Sculpture Award and the People’s Choice Sculpture Award. She dedicated her sculpture to positive thinking. The giant dandelion was funded by an anonymous buyer and purchased by the Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust. It is now situated in Heritage Park in Kimbolton.
Full-time work while creating her second sculpture meant many weekends and late nights in her garage. “I was worried about not having enough time to complete it when trying to balance it with working life. But I learnt that there is always time to explore that creativity. Sophie’s second sculpture, a large monarch butterfly titled Ashia, means life and hope.” She said it’s a tribute to a positive perspective on change and new beginnings. “I built this using corrugated iron, baling twine and an axle.” The butterfly sculpture, which earned Sophie the Local Yokel Sculpture Award, was sold to a family on the Kāpiti Coast. Entering the festival offers Sophie a creative outlet, and she enjoys the process of sculpting. “The ideas for my sculptures begin with the general theme I would like to portray, and then I find what imagery works with that. I consider what skills I have and go on a hunt for materials that I can work with around the family farm. “Anything that no longer fulfils its original purpose has great creative potential.” She said corrugated iron seems to be a reoccurring material in her sculpture ideas. “It’s something I am comfortable working with. However, each sculpture brings its own challenges.” Sophie already has plans to enter the 2022 Kimbolton Sculpture Festival on Saturday, April 2.

PROMOTING
FARM EXCELLENCE BY DENISE GUNN
T
he contest, which aims to showcase innovative red meat farming practices, identifies farmers demonstrating a well-balanced and positive approach to their business. Focussing on sheep and beef farming businesses, this year’s competition is the first of its type to be held in the Manawatū for decades. The region’s previous competition went into recess. Committee chair Paul Olsen said several committee members felt there was a need to celebrate success within the red meat sector. “As such, there wasn’t a competition that captured the on and off-farm skills and expertise that exists in everyday red meat farm businesses. “There are competitions running successfully in other regions with positive
outcomes, so we thought why don’t we follow suit. “The organising committee has been key to driving the competition to where it is today. Many hours of behind the scenes work are being done to enable a successful competition to happen. “It’s very much a team effort with people having input from farmers, bankers, accountants, farm advisers and real estate agents.” Wairere Rams near Masterton is the principal sponsor of the 2022 competition. Since 1987, Wairere has been the largest supplier of rams in New Zealand. The Wairere Central Districts Red Meat Business of the Year 2022 format runs along similar lines to competitions held in Tararua and the Wairarapa.

The key areas listed in the judging criteria include governance, physical management, financial performance, compliance, which includes health, safety and the environment, and general involvement in the community or other organisations outside of the business. “Judges looked for a good all-round farm business owner or manager, with a good balanced business,” said Paul. There were two rounds of judging with three different judges each time. The judging panel included farmers with good farm expertise, outside knowledge and an interest in rural professionalism. During the first stage, entrants presented their business to a judging panel of three. The second round of judging took place on-farm, where entrants showcased their property and explained their farming practices.
Judging is completed for the newlyintroduced Wairere Central Districts Red Meat Business of the Year 2022 competition.

The Wairere Central Districts Red Meat of the Year inaugural winner is to be announced at an award evening on Wednesday, March 2 2022. A field day will be held on the winner’s property at a later date.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Reduce energy costs with Insulmax A warm, dry home is not only a great comfort to return to at the end of the day; there are also huge health benefits and significant money saved on energy bills. Insulmax Manawatū licensees Stephen and Kathleen Jestin have a long background in insulation and have been installing wall insulation since 2006. As a former builder, Stephen has always held a special interest in energy efficiency and sustainable technologies. For the past seven years, the Jestins have been licence holders for Insulmax Manawatū. The Insulmax team offers customers premium wall and ceiling insulation, complying with all New Zealand building regulations. Kathleen says all council compliance is taken care of on behalf of customers, and Insulmax has a strict quality control process. “At the end of each install, we check our work with a thermal imaging camera to ensure nothing is missed.” Insulmax is a blown fibre product made from recycled glass. It is installed into wall cavities via small 16mm holes, either externally or internally. Holes are then filled, sanded and painted, or, in the case of brick, filled with matching mortar. “Insulmax is the most economical and efficient method of installing wall insulation, especially now as there is such a shortage of building materials. Insulmax saves tonnes of building materials from ending up in landfills by eliminating the need to remove wall linings,” said Stephen.

Insulmax Manawatū is centrally located to cover the region and beyond
“Our installs are usually completed in one day by our team of licensed installers. “Insulmax wall insulation gives older homes a higher insulation value than a new home. It is more effective than double-glazing and is a fraction of the cost. Insulmax can be installed via internal or external wall linings in most styles of homes.” A recent customer compared their electricity costs prior to their Insulmax install in July 2020 and after their install in July 2021. Their electricity account had reduced from $398.11 to $179.77 — a saving of more than 50%.
INSULMAX WALL INSULATION SYSTEM
“Our highlights are hearing from our happy customers about the huge differences in temperature and comfort levels in their home, as well as the huge savings customers are making on their heating and cooling bills,” Stephen said. Insulmax Manawatū is centrally located to cover the region and neighbouring Horowhenua, Whanganui and Rangitīkei. “We plan to continue to give the same high level of service to our customers and to help the owners of older houses to create warmer, more energyefficient homes.”

Wall Insulation Without Renovation
For Home Owners DO YOU WANT THE WARM WALL FEEL OF A NEW HOME?
Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

INGREDIENTS 1–2 tbsp olive oil 1 large leek 1 medium carrot 500g chicken breast 2 medium zucchini 300ml chicken stock 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard (optional) 2 tbsp sour cream or cream 1 sheet puff pastry Method Heat the oil in a frypan over a medium heat. Slice the leek thinly and fry the leek in the oil. Finely dice the carrot and add to the pan. Continue to sauté the leek and carrot until both are tender and fragrant (approx five minutes). Dice the chicken. Add this to the frypan and seal the chicken; it does not need to be browned all over, it will cook in the stock — which you add next. Add the stock, grate the zucchini and add this too. Bring to the boil, then reduce The Constant Angle Knife Sharpening System
LTD
to a simmer. Leave the mix to simmer for 20–30 mins; you want the liquid to reduce right down as this will be the filling of your pie. If it’s too liquidy, you end up with pie soup! You will think there is not enough liquid, but as the zucchini cooks, it releases moisture too, so try to wait before you add extra stock. Once the chicken and veggie mix has reduced down, turn off the heat and stir through the mustard and sour cream or cream. Grease a pie dish and transfer the chicken and veggie mix into the pie dish. Top with puff pastry. Pierce the pastry with a knife to create a few holes for steam to escape, and if you have the inclination, brush the pastry with a little melted butter. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden. This pie is very versatile. You can add a ½ cup of mushrooms and two rashers of bacon and omit the carrot and zucchini if you want. You may need to add a little flour if the liquid is too runny.

The soil fixers
ADVERTORIAL
Cartilage
Look in any vegetable garden, and somewhere between the mix of lettuce and other vegetables will be a crop of peas or beans. Peas and beans are part of the extended family of legumes utilised for food consumption and provide nitrogen to the soil through nodules on the roots. The family also includes peanuts, kidney beans, lentils, scarlet runner beans, broad beans and many more. In the ornamental range, plants include sweet peas, lupins and many more used as cut flowers. Lupins, in particular, along with clover are also used as green manure for the soil to improve nitrogen levels and improve soil texture. Growing beans in the garden is more a matter of taste than thinking about the nitrogen-fixing side of things, and the same applies to peas. Taking a look at the vast range available from New Zealand seed suppliers the choices are mindboggling, to say the least. Gardeners will be looking for varieties that are prolific producers for a long growing season. Climbing beans speak for themselves. They need some support to grow upon, the same as most pea species. Use poles, strings or netting to provide your climbing varieties with the necessary support required to ensure high cropping yields. Types include Scarlet Runner, Blue Lake Runner, Italian Flat, Lazy Housewife, Neekar Golden and Yard Long. More popular in smaller gardens, dwarf beans are an ideal alternative to
the climbing varieties. They can be planted easily in pots or between rows of corn or other vegetables to provide extra nitrogen for the soil. Prolific growers; these provide endless fresh pods for the table daily. Try out Dwarf Butter Cherokee, Roquefort Dwarf, Purple Tee Pee Dwarf, Top Crop and Borlotto Fire Tongue. Peas need little introduction — they’re another iconic part of the Kiwi diet. Most varieties require netting for support since they have a climbing habit. Use netting to provide a solid framework for your plants to grow upon. As with beans, peas need little care other than regular watering, a little fertiliser and regular picking of the pods. Types to try are Sugarsnap, Princess, Alderman Tall, Petit Provencal and Utrillo. For a little interest, peanuts can be germinated in small pots and transplanted into the garden. They’re especially good for restructuring difficult clay soil, so I’ve found in recent years. Harvest when the plant dies back. Sow lupins as either a green manure crop and cut down before flowering, then dig into the soil. There are also lupin varieties that can be grown for their spectacular flowers covering the colour spectrum. For more information on legumes, look online or talk to your local nursery professional.

In theory, osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the simplest diseases. For years, we thought that cartilage in our joints wore away over time. We now know that OA is a complex disease where the processes that reduce cartilage are affected by genetics, past joint trauma and nutrition, especially levels of important antioxidants. Cartilage is very different from other tissue types. It has no nerve or blood supply, and it appears as lifeless tissue. Cartilage is a dynamic tissue. It is a matrix of proteins (collagen and elastin), chondroitin sulphate, water and living cells called chondrocytes. Research shows that the health of chondrocytes is central to the development of OA. Each chondrocyte looks after a small patch of cartilage, repairing damage by secreting new cartilage matrix where needed. The problem is when chondrocytes are damaged or die. It means that the cell can no longer maintain cartilage. Eventually, the cartilage thins — leading to a (painful) bone on bone scenario. One of the most annoying and painful arthritic joints are small hand joints. While Nutritional Therapy can help, these are among the slowest

joints to respond. It seems counterintuitive, but big weight-bearing joints, especially knees, tend to respond faster. I have been helping someone with OA in their base thumb joint at the wrist. Within three months, the pain had reduced. Now, after a year, the discomfort is really minor only when under heavy use. I use a two-pronged approach to supporting cartilage. Firstly, we add compounds, especially chondroitin, that can support and repair cartilage. Secondly, we add curcumin from turmeric and Omega 3 fish oil to reduce inflammation. Often the inflammation causes more pain and mobility loss than the actual cartilage damage. Thirdly, we add the antioxidants that protect chondrocyte cells from further damage. ADVERTORIAL
Get ready for winter! Here at Central Mower Services, we follow Ken Ring, The Moon Man, and his weather predictions thus far for 2022 have all been spot on. He predicts a sharp end to summer in March with more heavy rain weather events for our local area and snow as early as April. Although we are still experiencing some very muggy hot weather, now is the time to prepare for the change of seasons. We have researched the current costs of firewood. With a cubic metre of pine costing a median price of around $100, most wood merchants sell a truckload of about three cubic metres. It is cheaper than purchasing one cubic metre at a time, with an average of around $250 a load. With a long, cold, wet winter on the horizon, now is the time to head out with your chainsaw and safety gear and start preparing for winter.
“With good stock levels heading into autumn, now is the time to come in and take a look around.” If you don’t have trees readily available, one option is to look for fallen trees/limbs around your area. Approach some of the friendly farmers and see if they have any trees they need cleaning up.
Safety is an important part of our business. In-store we have helmets and visors, chaps and trousers and chainsaw mitts to make sure you are safe while you are working. For great service and industry knowledge, visit Rob, Megan and the team at Central Mowers, your home of outdoor power equipment servicing the Manawatū region for more than 10 years. 696 Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North. Phone 06 355 2967. Visit centralmowers. co.nz or find them on Facebook.
Chainsaws available at Central Mowers are Oleo-Mac, Echo, Shindaiwa and Makita. With good stock levels heading into autumn, now is the time to come in and take a look around. Pricing starts at just $349 for an Italian made Oleo-Mac GSH40 running a 16” bar and chain. At 38.9cc, it is a very good entry-level saw. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Powerhouse Echo CS-7310SX professional saw in stock. With 73.5cc and running a 20” bar, this weapon won’t let you down.

Why do we have to export logs from NZ? When you kill a cow, some goes to our supermarkets and some to export.
Trees are the same. Wood chip for fuel and chip for MDF and fibreboard. Cardboard, paper and toilet paper made in NZ. Branches and needles are left in forest for ground cover to stop erosion and return nutrients to the soil.
BRANCHES, NEEDLES AND FIREWOOD
EXPORT GRADE
Because this wood has more knots and bends, New Zealand sawmills cannot use it.
EXPORT GRADE SMALL AND LARGE BRANCHED SAWLOG
Export logs are made overseas into: boxing for concrete, packing crates, cardboard, pallets, furniture and timber for houses.
Used in our domestic sawmills. This is processed in New Zealand into framing timber, decking, timber for laminated beams, structural timber for housing, and peeled for plywood manufacturing.
DOMESTIC GRADE PRUNED SAWLOG
Stump is left for soil stability.
Once a tree is cut, some will go to NZ sawmills and some to export. None will be wasted. Acraflex Dairy Wall Coating System (as this takes a few days), we have been doing a lot of yard and milk room floor repairs where we fit it in between milkings. “We normally request the farmers push their milkings apart a bit more to allow us plenty of time to prepare and lay down two to three coats of resin.” Surfatex 2019 also uses premium German-brand Degadur, which is based on liquid plexiglass or methyl methacrylate (MMA) resins. “These are fast becoming a go-to solution for commercial and industrial flooring projects. MMA floors are highly valued since they achieve full cure within two hours of installation.
“This rapid curing makes Degadur a perfect choice for projects with short timelines such as repairing cracks and exposed aggregate around the vat, or in the milk room and yard between the daily milkings.” Surfatex 2019 has also applied antislip coating to patios, resurfaced floors in meatworks and coated a couple of toilet blocks. The Surfatex team is always happy to visit and discuss options for cowsheds or other buildings which require painting or remedial work on the floor or yard. Down to earth law service Our office is farmer-friendly — just leave your dirty boots at the front door! We have a large portfolio of rural clients covering everything from property transactions, succession plans, lending, employment, company formation, sharemilking agreements, and so much more. We are a team of down to earth people with a can-do attitude. The last few years have been the growth phase for CS Law, formerly known as Cullinane Steele, a longstanding law firm in the lower North Island. In 2018 we saw a rebrand and Hannah Wood joining Doug Rowan as a director. Further growth and expansion meant that in early 2021, litigator Daniel Vincent joined as a director, followed by director Peter McKenzie-Bridle and his Good+Law practice out of Wellington. In 2021, 15 new faces joined across the different levels of the firm to address the business growth. CS Law boasts an experienced team that can meet the needs of our clients and potential clients across the legal spectrum. The litigation team is experienced with director Daniel Vincent appearing regularly in appellate jurisdictions in respect of the Hague

The growth of the business saw Heidi Sixtus appointed as general manager. We have a number of staff employed with the firm who have been with us for several years, which gives our clients continuity. We have some team members located around the North Island working remotely, which has strengthened our capabilities, one of the only good things to come from Covid-19. The commercial,

Dry weather need not delay pasture For new pasture, you can be proud of, even if it feels too dry to think about it right now, consider sowing seed before it rains, instead of waiting for the autumn weather to smile on you. Research shows ryegrass seed sown early in dry autumn conditions germinates well after weeks with no rain, says Barenbrug pasture systems manager Blair Cotching. “It can also grow more feed per hectare than seed sown later, and will probably persist longer too, giving you a better result all round.” Plus, you’ll beat the rush for contractors when the rain does come, he says. Yes, you can! “We’ve been asked so many times if it’s OK to sow seed in the dry. We did a trial to confirm the answer.” In hot Waikato peat during an autumn drought, Barenbrug agronomists sowed perennial ryegrass seed with NEA2 endophyte in late February, March and April. The earliest sowing had it the hardest; the soil reached more than 49 degrees Celsius at seed depth (two centimetres), with no rain for 43 days. Even so, this February-sown seed went on to grow two tonnes of dry matter a

hectare more than seed sown post-rain in April, and the endophyte was fine, Blair says. Ready to grow Ryegrass seed sown after March 1 and before the rain is poised for growth as soon as conditions are right. If seed is still in the bag, when the weather breaks, it can’t grow. By then, everyone else wants to do the same thing, so contractors are flat out, and delays are inevitable, especially the way things are now. However — there’s more. Moreover, because it starts growing as soon as it has enough moisture,
seed sown early becomes new pasture that is ready for its first grazing sooner than if you wait and sow after the rain. Why does this matter? “That first grazing has a massive impact on your pasture establishment,” Blair says. “It helps the young ryegrass plants grow denser and stronger before winter when wet soils and heavy cows can damage pasture. And it gets the clover off to a good start.” As an added bonus, clover seed likes early sowing, too, because the soil is warmer.
Blair Cotching, Barenbrug
First up, best dressed The benefits of sowing early don’t stop in the paddock. If this technique suits your farm and your soils, it will also help you get organised ahead of time. That means no rushing around at the last minute trying to get hold of seed and a lot more peace of mind knowing you’re as ready as you can be for one of the most important jobs of autumn. What next? Talk to your local seed rep today.

Taking off with Wanganui Aero Club Since its establishment in 1929, the aero club has clocked up close to a century, training pilots, providing social activities, trips and aviation competitions. Based at Wanganui Airport, the club was also one of Australasia’s first commercial flight training schools. Former Lancaster bomber pilot the late Ivon Warmington was the club’s chief flying instructor for many years. Ivon’s extensive and distinguished flying career in the Royal Air Force (RAF) saw him fly 31 second world war missions in a Lancaster bomber. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Club member Stuart Ashby said Ivon was important to the structure of the club. “After the war, he flew in the Far East, flying VIPs around and then he came to New Zealand. Hundreds and hundreds of pilots around the world were taught by Ivon. He was a legend,” said Stuart. The club’s flight training school employs several flight instructors and complies with the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA) regulations. In addition to the flight training school, it has a vibrant social scene with trips and competitions. “We are planning an upcoming trip to Castlepoint for a night out. We have three club aircraft and club members with their own aircraft. We fly to a destination for a night or two and fly
back again. Students, club members and flying instructors all go.” Competitions at club, inter-club, regional and national level are also popular. “We hold quite a few competitions. Once a month, competitions are organised by the club captain.” Club members and students meet socially on Sunday afternoons too. “We have new members joining all the time and new students. We have about 50 active members who are flying and probably about 10 of those with their own aircraft.” The club’s Young Eagles group, which gives members the opportunity to experience flying, is currently inactive due to the Covid-19. However, there are plans to get it up and running again soon. Trial flights are also offered, introducing people to flying. Wanganui Aero Club receives regular visits from local groups, clubs, scouts, Air Training Corps cadets, schools and even kindergartens. “We plan to have an open day this year,” said Stuart. Wanganui Aero Club is run by a committee with a constitution and is a member of Flying NZ.

76% of New Zealanders are concerned about “fake news” and its implications
In addition to rust problems, some vehicles are also acid-washed before hitting the road. As the exclusive importers of CorrosionX products into New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands, Corrosion Control NZ has the perfect solution. Corrosion Control NZ director Tom Muller said CorrosionX is a militaryspecified, aviation-approved product. The usual process to follow would be to remove the vehicle’s panels, insulation and components to access difficult spots. Failing electric and electronics can be difficult to fix too. With the application of CorrosionX, whether it’s do-it-yourself or professional, no preparation is required. “The product is fogged into and on to the chassis, electrics and electronics — even and, especially, if the vehicle is still wet.” Vehicle underbody components need corrosion protection and lubrication. CorrosionX XD penetrates, lubricates and protects against all further corrosion. Based on polar bonding technology, the product does not harm rubber, neoprene, fibreglass, paint PCBs or plastics.

Paint and chassis restoration and protection with CorrosionX
Tom said there is no fuss using CorrosionX products and no lingering smell. “Vehicles can be used right after the application. CorrosionX drives out moisture, stops electrolysis on impact and is not flammable. “The products are NZMPI-approved to class C11, good for you, good for your vehicle and good for the environment,” said Tom.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Four decades of agricultural service Following the establishment of Bruce Gordon Contracting Ltd in 1981, the business has grown considerably. Bruce started the business with one tractor, juggling part-time work off the farm and family commitments. Now, 41 years later, the Rangitīkeibased business employs three to four full-time staff and nine seasonal employees. A fleet of seven tractors and a wide range of implements, including a telehandler, cover the broad range of services offered. Two recently purchased balers contain state-of-the-art technology. Operations manager Mike Hancock said both the Fendt round combi baler and a Casehigh density baler contain ISOBUS technology, moisture meter and scales, keeping quality consistent. “ B oth balers have an inoculant applicator.” Bruce Gordon Contracting Ltd offers full cultivation and baling services. “Our full cultivation services include direct drilling,” said Mike. Full baling services are available for hay baleage and straw in rounds, squares and conventional bales.
In addition, there are three trucks on the road offering general cartage. “We offer supplements, including baleage, hay and straw, to the wider North Island as far as Auckland and south to Lower Hutt. “We supply a lot of hay and baleage to sheep and beef farmers and dairy farms around the lower North Island.” The team also supplies a great deal of straw to Auckland’s market gardeners to use as strawberry bedding. Deliveries are made to Takanini Horse Feeds too. All feed is sourced around the Rangitīkei, Manawatū and Whanganui regions. Mike came from a dairy farming background before taking up his position with Bruce Gordon Contracting. Since taking over his current role, he’s successfully grown the business and is continuing to diversify. “My short-term goals are to have a smooth transition to ownership of the company with a rebrand in place.” Continuing to grow the business while firmly establishing himself and his team within the farming community is top of Mike’s list.
FOR ALL YOUR SPREADING REQUIREMENTS
Mike Hancock — Operations manager
He aims for the business to become well-recognised for competently providing a broad range of services around the region and the lower North Island.
“As well as doing our bit to reduce our carbon footprint on the farm while still retaining excellent results,” he said.
• Good supply of hay, balage & straw — round, square & conventional — all year round • Competitive cartage options available • Direct drilling plus full cultivations • Cartage North Island wide

BUSINESS PROFILE
Serving the farming community For close to a century, the Trotter family has run a contracting business from their Horowhenua base, serving the surrounding farming community. The late Bill Trotter formed the company in 1924. With a team of horses, Bill ploughed land for the Chinese market gardeners, pioneering agricultural contracting in the region during the process. Following the second world war, Bill and his son, the late Peter Trotter, broke in much of the land in the Horowhenua. Third-generation family member Garry Trotter now owns the business, managing it alongside his son Rowan. Garry has worked in the business for more than 40 years, and Rowan, a qualified diesel mechanic, has also grown up in the business. Garry’s wife Cath is a qualified accountant, handling all the finances and administration. With just two years until reaching a century in business, offering excellent service has been the key to the Trotter Contracting’s longevity. Expanding its geographical coverage to include nearby Manawatū and Kapiti areas, customers include mostly dairy and beef farmers, market gardeners and lifestyle block owners. A team of eight long-standing staff members, all high-skilled machine operators, are on-hand to deliver a range of services.
Four spreaders match the call for bulk fertiliser spreading using Ravensdown, Ballance and Hatuma Lime. “We are a Ravensdown consignment store and operate a certified weighbridge. Two truck and trailer units cart all the company’s bulk fertiliser requirements and are also able to offer bulk cartage services to customers,” said Garry. In addition to fertiliser spreading, another major aspect of the business is harvesting by way of maize and grass silage, baleage and hay. Cultivation work, including ploughing and drilling, add to the services the business can offer. Trotter Contracting also transports live laying pullets around New Zealand for Tegal Limited, as part of its bulk cartage operation. “The diverse nature of the work keeps the business going no matter what the market. Moreover, because it’s a family business, we all work in together. We’ve been around a long time, which gives our customers security. “In fact, some of our customers have been with us for years, and we are proud to have sometimes helped generations of farmers.”

Right move with Mower Master With a 30-year background working in mechanical engineering, Eugene Healy has found taking over ownership of Mower Master Ltd to be a perfect fit. The former manager for RJ’s Licorice factory’s engineering department, together with his partner Pamela Hickton, bought the business last year. Pamela’s rural and contracting work background is also an asset to the Mower Master Ltd. In addition to taking care of Mower Master Ltd’s accounts and paperwork, Pamela works part-time for BNZ. Both raised in Horowhenua, the couple continues to live locally. Previously known as Moa Master, the business was in the hands of the Anderson family for 18 years. “We took over ownership in April last year and formed a new company called Mower Master Ltd, with the help of the Anderson Family,” said Eugene. The Anderson family wanted to see the business continue in local hands. “Unfortunately, the previous owner had poor health issues and passed away mid-2021 just after we took over,” said Eugene. Mower Master Ltd supplies highquality equipment at an affordable price. “We provide quad bike/ATV or sideby-side towable agricultural equipment,

Nevada’s tips and predictions by Michael Prestidge
Global pressure on environmental issues, together with the impact and aftermath of Covid-19, promise interesting times ahead and our best advice is to act now.
Michael Prestidge — Nevada Effluent management specialist
Compliance If you’re already facing compliance issues, there’s a lot that can be done to not only ensure your farm is meeting regulations but to future-proof to reduce the chances of needing to make major changes soon. Many farmers who already operate well within current rules and regulations shouldn’t have too much difficulty adapting and progressing to reasonably foreseeable changes. Getting things sorted now will have a number of benefits: You can get a new consent, which would then be 25 years plus your remaining term. Resource consent conditions may vary between regions Inflation is likely to increase further, meaning there’s never a

cheaper time to get things done than now Affordability — the interest on borrowing money now will probably be less than what the cost of products and services will be in a few years. Tax relief. Increased income means increased tax. Invest into the farm to offset your income Synthetic nitrogen usage Restrictions on nitrogen usage and price hikes are forcing farmers to review their fertiliser and effluent use. Many are investing in slurry tankers to spread evenly over the entire farm. This trend is likely to continue, as with supplements
such as AddGreen™. Tractor-based spreaders make for easy recording by using your tractor’s GPS. It is a new requirement for 2022. Labour shortages Although we’re looking forward to the borders opening up to bring back some of the international workforce, there are no guarantees we’ll see an immediate improvement in labour shortages. To avoid emergencies, we recommend farmers have efficient equipment and a regular pumping regime. It is also a good idea to own your own tanker for a contingency plan as contractors are struggling to meet their workload
too. Maybe team up with a friend or neighbour. Moving away from disc injectors and dropper booms There has been a lot of discussion over the use of disc injectors and dropper booms for effluent application. Some farmers have found the application has caused contamination of the subsequent crop, while injectors increase the likelihood of leaching. Nevada’s RainWave™ is proving to be the way to go moving forward due to their controlled, even application and minimal volatilisation. We might also see a reversion to low-pressure irrigators instead of rainguns.
