Craftsmanship that speaks for itself.

The grants aim is to assist non-profit organisations such as community groups, schools, catchment care groups and iwi/hapu with projects that will help increase engagement with Manawatu waterways and improve water quality in the catchment. This year there was $80,000 to award to community projects that met the criteria. Horizons natural resources and partnerships manager Jon Roygard said the quality of this year’s applications was outstanding. “The judging panel had a really tough time deciding which projects would receive aid from our limited funding pool. The calibre of applications was exceptional, with many of the projects planned for completion over several years, so to help kick start them is really pleasing.” This year’s grants were awarded to: • Mangaone West Catchment Care Group: $31,490 for a community led riparian planting at several properties, with a total of 9,400 plants. • Oroua Catchment Care Group — Otoku Stream: $5,250 for planting of 1,500 plants on private property

up-stream of plantings which were undertaken two years ago at AFFCO. Te Kauru — Te Taiao Ukaipo: $9,200 to go towards 2,000 plants to go along the Otamaraho and Mangapuaka Streams, support of planting days, six research interviews, travel and administration costs. Stoney Creek Catchment Project: $16,080 to go towards willow removal and 4,200 plants in the continuation of riparian enhancement work along Stoney Creek. Mangaone Stream riparian planting: $3,200 for a riparian planting enhancement project adjacent to the Mangaone Stream. Oroua Catchment Care Group — Rata Street walkway: $3,375 for 1,300 plantings along the Makino Walkway between Rata Street, Feilding and Awahuri Forest. Urban Eels — Our Sustainable City Phase 3: $7,050 for the design and layout of a site for the eel interaction platform on the Turitea Stream. This will include design of signage and information at other sites in the city.

Dannevirke sisters win rural photography competition

3

by Denise Gunn

Two daughters of a south Dannevirke dairy farming couple are among the winners in the annual IHC Calf and Rural Scheme photo competition. It was the first photo competition the girls, Anne Barrow, 14, and Maria Barrow,12, had entered. The IHC Calf and Rural Scheme introduced the photography competition in 2013. Prior to this, a colouring competition was held which Anne had also won previously. After reading about the photo competition in an IHC newsletter, Anne and Maria decided to enter. Using their family’s camera, a Canon PowerShot 2006 SX170IS, the sisters took several photos around the farm and with pet calves before deciding which photos to send in. The girls’ mother Diane said all her children got on board taking photos and were competing with each other. The competition criteria covered photos of pledged calves, other calves, farming scenes, rural scenes and anything particularly ‘New Zealand’. Photos with people could be included if permission had been given by those photographed. Diane said her family found out that Anne and Maria were competition winners by email.

“I was out at the time and when I got home was told to check the computer. “They were dancing and bouncing around with excitement.” Winning the competition has encouraged the sisters to continue taking photographs for further contests. “We will be keeping an eye out for more and looking out for more things to enter,” said Diane. Staff at the IHC national office judged the photo competition. Maria won the 8 to 12 year age group and Anne was the winner of the 13 to 18 year category. Other winners were Nyla Lauridsen from Te Awamutu who won the 7 and under section, and Michelle van Zyl from Gore took first place in the over 18 age group. The winners of each category will receive at $100 Prezzy card. Their winning photographs will be published in the IHC Calf and Rural Scheme’s autumn 2018 newsletter.

OPENS DOOR TO OPPORTUNITIES BY DENISE GUNN Entering the Hoof and Hook competition in 2008 was Amy Hoogenboom’s introduction to the beef industry. Since then, Amy has spent 12 months as a Future Beef NZ Allflex Senior Ambassador, and recently represented the New Zealand Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) in the Agriculture Shows Australia Merino Fleece Young Judges Final.

A

my grew up on her family’s lifestyle block on the outskirts of Waikpukurau. With a yearning to become involved in the beef industry, Amy found this difficult without an agricultural background. “While I was interested in becoming more involved in the industry, not many people knew who I was,” said Amy. That changed when two Shorthorn studs, Tahuna and Hiwiroa, approached the high school Amy attended, looking for young people to lead their steers in the Hoof and Hook competition. After her first year at this competition Amy was keen for more opportunities. For several years she broke in her own steers to show at the event. “In 2009 I got a phone call from Glen Anthony Simmentals stud master, Tony Thompson, asking if I would like

to help him with his team of cattle at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show that year. “I continued to show for the stud for the next few years and still try to help them out during the show season where possible.” Amy has a particular interest in Angus and Simmental breeds and may look to establishing her own stud in the future. However, Amy wants to ensure she has both the time to fully commit to the running of a stud and researched the direction of her breeding programme before she embarks on this. In 2015 Amy was selected as a Future Beef New Zealand Allflex Senior Ambassador — a 12 month role. “In my view the role of the ambassador is to support further growth of Future Beef, its values, and vision by actively promoting the organisation. wanted to inspire others with her story, and cultivate relationships by showing a genuine interest in members and what they were doing. “The 12 months I spent in that role saw me travel from northern Kaipara to Christchurch and almost everywhere in between.” Amy invested much of her own time and money towards fulfilling the criteria she set for herself. “I believe it was very much worth it and has encouraged those who have won the award after me to also be more active in promoting the organisation and getting new people involved.” “I was also extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Australia for a week as part of the ambassador award, visiting a number of beef cattle studs, feedlots and attending the Australian Angus Youth Round-up. “This trip really helped me to develop a greater understanding of the Australian Beef Industry, especially the feedlot industry, as well as bring home some ideas to improve our Future Beef Youth competition.” Late last year Amy represented the New Zealand Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) in the Agriculture Shows Australia Merino Fleece Young Judges Final. She was selected through winning the western districts’ competition final, then winning the New Zealand National final for Merino Fleece Young Judges, earning the trip to Melbourne. Amy was runnerup champion in the final. At the 2017 World Angus Forum held in Scotland, Amy was a member of Team New Zealand Toa, winning gold 12

Amy has found balancing her beef cattle interests in around her university studies challenging

in the youth competition from nine other teams. She has also just completed her fourth year examinations towards a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Her interest in becoming a production/large animal veterinarian was cemented when she competed in the Future Beef New Zealand competition. Amy has found balancing her beef cattle interests in and around her university studies has been challenging and good time management essential. “The World Angus Forum clashed with my first semester exams which resulted in me having to sit some of my exams in Scotland. “It was definitely a challenge writing an exam only 12 hours after 26 hours of flying. “I am extremely grateful for the university in their understanding and cooperation to have allowed this to

happen; otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to go at all.” Amy’s current beef industr y involvement is centred around Future Beef New Zealand. “I am a member of the executive committee, and editor of our quarterly ‘Top Paddock’ newsletter.” Amy also helps out on a relative’s Angus stud, and attends A&P Shows around New Zealand to help breeders show their cattle. She is in her third season of night foal watching for a thoroughbred horse stud and prepared yearlings for the Karaka Yearling Sales too. When Amy completes her degree she hopes to work as a production animal veterinarian in New Zealand. She also plans to travel to the United Kingdom to gain experience of different animal health challenges faced by farmers.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Farmers are encouraged to demonstrate their creative talents using natural materials and items they can up-cycle from around the farm for an inaugural rural sculpture competition in April 2018.

T

he New Zealand Rural Sculpture Awards will be part of a oneday arts festival to be held at the Kimbolton Domain in the northern Manawatu. A group of like-minded people, which includes recent arrivals and established community leaders in the small settlement of Kimbolton, grouped together and formed an arts trust to host the national rural sculpture festival. Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust chairman Tony Waugh said he wants to see farmers and others who live on the land, try their hand at sculpting using

wood, metal or anything hanging about. “It could be fence battens, machinery parts, bailing twine or old drench containers. “We are looking to provide an incentive for anyone who works land or has something to say about the New Zealand landscape, to leave their worries about making ends meet behind and engage with bigger ideas.” Tony said the Australian town of Lockhart has held a rural sculpting festival for ten years and now attracts thousands of people to the fourday event.

The Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival began during the worst drought in the town’s recorded history. It revived community spirit and inspired enthusiasm. “We know we have problems with rural mental health in New Zealand too,” said Tony. “This is a way of bringing people together and doing something more practical than just talking about the challenges we face. “Many issues face farmers in New Zealand. There’s an increase in farmer depression and suicides. This annual rural sculpture festival will encourage farmers throughout the country to take some time out and head to their workshop to create a sculpture that says something about their relationship to their landscape.” Tony said it is an opportunity for rural people to have a go as many may not have considered themselves artists. “There is $11,000 in prize money, enough time to get the creative juices flowing and move a bit of gear around in the shed before entries close in late March.” The Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Charitable Trust offer a New Zealandwide sculpture award of $5,000 and a Creative Cocky award of $2,000. There will also be a prize of $1,000 for the best ‘local’ sculpture as well as a young person’s award, and a people’s choice award. Sixteen schools within a 30 kilometre radius of Kimbolton are also being encouraged to take part in the competition. The awards are a national event but a special under 18 years section will only be open to an invited 16 schools in the first year of the competition.

Hedgehog by Terry Hawkins Festival Day organiser Stewart Morton said the competition encourages upcycling and recycling. “It’s about seeing what there is already around you that could be used to say something about rural New Zealand,” he said. Sculptures should reflect the resilience, heart, soul and humour of those who live and work on the land, express cultural heritage, unique experiences, and be an individual interpretation of ‘The Spirit of the Land’. The six northern Manawatu villages will work together to create the festival to showcase the sculpture competition. Trustee Darryl Coleman is keen to see Kimbolton known for rural sculpture.

It has something to say to all for us, especially works designed to be displayed outdoors.” “I want to see our village as somewhere people come to see and buy rural sculpture,” he said. MANAWATU SETS STAGE

FOR RURAL GAMES by Denise Gunn When Steve Hollander saw the need to support rural sports and provide athletes with a national platform to aim and perform on, he stepped forward and established the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games. photo credit Peter McDermott

ver three years, the games have continued to grow from strength to strength, showcasing a range of traditional sports in one big event. “Kiwis have led the world in a multiple of rural sporting disciplines and the games are a unique opportunity to see champions from many disciplines as they face off local and international competition,” said Steve. In 2015 the games kicked off in Queenstown. The popular tourist town was chosen as a high profile destination, suitable for television. Two years later, the event was moved to the Manawatu. Steve said after two years in Queenstown, it was time to lift the profile and increase the scope. “The Manawatu is perfectly located in rural

New Zealand, reaching out to other rural regions in the lower North Island, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.” The Square, in Palmerston North, also proved to be an ideal central location for the event. Steve said The Square as the venue is brilliant and the games will be staying there for three more years. Focus switched to Feilding for the event’s 2017 opening as a large crowd gathered to watch the Running of the Wools. Around 1,000 sheep were carefully herded through the streets as they ran from the saleyards to Manchester Street, circled the clock tower and back towards their starting point. Potaka Station near Halcombe supplied the sheep.

“Potaka have been kind enough to prepare 1,000 sheep for the day,” said Steve. “They are beautifully presented. “Stock Lines provide us with two large trucks and trailers to carry the sheep to the saleyards where they are loaded through to PGGW holding pen.” Manawatu District mayor Helen Worboys said it’s a community event at its heart, one which celebrates New Zealand’s rich rural history — offering urban residents and tourists alike with a chance to experience rural life up-close and personal. “It’s another celebration of who we are — a rural hub for the wider central North Island.” New Zealand real estate company Property Brokers has secured naming rights sponsorship of the Running of the Wools for the next three years. Property Brokers founder and principal Tim Mordaunt said the event is in line with his company’s culture and values, and it sits very much with their aim to create a fun environment. “It’s all about bringing the country to town as well as celebrating our unique Kiwi rural life and having fun.” Steve said the Running of the Wools is a great spectacle with between 5,000 and 6,000 people attending in 2017. “We have the Mitre 10 Man and Mutt race for Young Farmers Club members and their dogs, the Coachman Sulky Challenge, the Skellerup Red Bandal race, and the PGGW wool fadge race, along with the Trans-Tasman Fit 4 Farming Bike Race.” On the Friday evening, the nation’s premiere rural sports athletes will be

Top Australasian competitors are drawn to the games with several national and world champions vying for titles. Event organisers aim to increase the awareness and establish the games as one of the main events on the rural calendar. “We want to support the sports associations and help grow rural sport in New Zealand.” Steve said the games also cater for city and country folk willing to get in, get dirty and give it a go. “It’s a free, fun event for families and there is always something to watch or do,” said Steve.

The competitions will be held in The Square, Palmerston North on March 10-11.

ADVERTORIAL

Tough season but plenty of potential by Conrad Wilkshire, GM Rural Property Brokers

Manawatu-Whanganui has been doing it tough over the past year but the region remains one of huge opportunity for agriculture and for rural investors. This is not just my view — economists and bankers have been saying much the same for years. Given recent weather extremes — our wet winter and early, very dry summer — it’s worth recalling the major study of Manawatu-Whanganui’s economic potential done by independent economists in 2015. They declared the region to be one of New Zealand’s most productive thanks to fertile soils, diversity of land types, annual rainfall near the national average and good infrastructure. This government-commissioned study found big growth potential across all Manawatu-Whanganui’s established rural industries — sheep and beef, dairying, arable and vegetable production, poultry and manuka honey. In hill country sheep and beef, it predicted a $26 million per year boost to gross farm income on hill country sheep and beef properties simply through extension of current productivity improvement initiatives. The gains in dairying could top $100 million if the region’s high-quality land was used to its full potential within environmental limits. Fundamentally — and putting periodic weather extremes to one side — the economists saw Manawatu-Whanganui as a land of big unrealised potential for rural industry. Recent work by agri-business analysts at ANZ Bank relate today’s productive performance to rural property prices in eight New Zealand regions — and once again Manawatu-Whanganui emerges as a place with particular

potential for rural investors. In dairying, livestock grazing, horticulture and arable, average property sale values in Manawatu-Whanganui during 2016 were well below national average levels despite the region outperforming most others on production measures. In dairying, the ANZ analysis finds an average farm price of $33 per milksolids kg produced — compare that with $60 in Taranaki and a national average of $42. Manawatu-Whanganui’s average price for grazing land, at $706 per stock unit, is 38% lower than the national average (and well under Waikato’s $1,557). Finishing land in Manawatu-Whanganui is not quite so cheap ($1,574 per stock unit) but there are still four regions more favoured in this farm category. Wide variation in farm values reflects region-specific property market drivers: The ANZ report says Northland, for example, is impacted by its unusually pronounced swings from flood to drought over recent years. On 2016 prices, ManawatuWhanganui stands out most on value for money — and that is even before that study of the region’s potential has been fully factored into the market! None of this is actually news to the region’s most astute investors — and these include the purchasers of several highly productive properties during 2017. Among them was a 211-hectare block of arable and grazing land in the Moutoa area, acquired for $9.8 million in early

Conrad Wilkshire, GM Rural Property Brokers

summer. Last autumn, Property Brokers also managed the sale and purchase of Twin Rivers, a noted mixed farming operation on 659ha in the Halcombe

area (priced at $7.56 million). We look forward to helping more farmers and investors secure their place in the future of Manawatu-Whanganui.

A new model is needed that covers all parts of our agricultural system and lessens the negative impacts on our topsoil, waterways and environment as a whole. The current model of agro-chemical production is well past its use-by date and out of kilter with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense

around Mother Nature, which is designed to remineralise and revitalise deficient topsoil, all for the price of our fertilisers, which are in line with current fertiliser costs, but with all the benefits of building a multi-mineral, microbial rich, worm wriggling, water retaining soil, enhancing the farm and protecting the environment. In the mid 1980s, as a commercial grower of produce for the Japanese market, my squash plants failed to grow. This created a major change in my thinking, to a point where I made a move towards using more natural fertilisers and managing chemicals out of my spray programme; focussing on getting more mineral content to the plant, so that it would build its own immune system. What a difference that made not only to the plant’s health and production, but also to my health. There is no denying that our planet is in the midst of an ecological crisis. However, thanks to gravity, all the elements needed to repair the system and especially the soils are still here on the planet. Basically, the best top soils are made up of rock dust deposited on the plains and in the valleys through glacial movement. Microorganisms and worm life flourish in a chemical free environment and these beautiful creatures are essential to having healthy, productive topsoil. To grow good healthy plants you need minerals, microbes, sunlight and

water, not one or two minerals but a full spectrum of minerals in a completely natural form — not synthetic! Not just one or two microbes, but a full array of microorganisms in mega numbers. This is what we specialise in; multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health and vitality back to soils, plants, animals, humans and the environment. Our fertilisers are living fertilisers which encourage worm life, which in turn increases mineral potency on average 306% over all minerals taken through the worm’s gizzard and deposited in their castings. (Brookside Laboratories research on worm castings). For over 20 years Agrissentials has been passionately dedicated to manufacturing the highest quality, safest and easiest to handle natural fertilisers that get results. We are BioGro certified but you don’t need to be certified to gain all the benefits of our products. Most of our customers are conventional farmers but choose to use our products because they reap all the productivity benefits with no negative impacts to people, the animals or the environment. The Ministry for Primary Industries has confirmed that the bacterial cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis is present on a farm in the Ashburton area. The current number of infected properties now stands at 14 – one in Hawkes Bay, nine in South Canterbury, three in Southland, and one in Ashburton. The Ministry’s response incident controller David Yard says milk sampling carried out by the dairy industry just before Christmas revealed a suspected positive result and MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory testing has just confirmed this. “The affected farm and an associated property have been under controls since Christmas Eve as a precautionary measure. No animals or other risk goods such as used farm equipment have been allowed on or off the property during this time and these controls stand,” Mr Yard says. “There has been no sign of any illness in any of the approximately 600 animals on the property. MPI is now tracing animal movements on and off the farm to determine if there are links to other affected properties,

and will carry out checks and testing on some 30 other farms that have had some association with the new affected property. “Farmers that have had some connection with the affected property will be contacted and those who do not hear from us in the next couple of weeks should consider they are under no increased risk from this most recent detection.” MPI is continuing tests on another Ashburton area farm that had 2

previously returned inconclusive results. This farm is not regarded as positive, although it is under controls just in case. “MPI and its industry partners in the response understand how worrying this new detection is to the farming community. Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of pipelines Pipes, hoses and other means of water conveyance are one of the most maligned part of an irrigation or water delivery system. This also applies to household and stock water systems. Usually some generosity is made towards the pump and equipment purchase but then the purse strings tighten and the minimum diameter pipe will be used, perhaps egged on by an unqualified salesman who has a special price on offer — just because someone told you it is appropriate “my relative uses it on his farm” etc doesn’t mean that it will do the job for you. It is almost impossible to have too large a pipeline diameter (within financial constraints), contrary to urban myth I often come up against. Another myth is the “you need to reduce the pipe size as you get further out to keep the liquid speed up”. Quite incorrect as a bit of experimenting or google of “pressure drop” will show. Any knowledgeable specialists should be able to calculate the size required from the flow required over the distance

2

required and then apply acceptable pressure loss, to reach correct sized pipe. It isn’t rocket science. All reputable pipe manufacturers will have friction loss tables which should be referred to. Ask to see the calculation, after all you are paying for their product! This is particularly so if working in PE or uPVC pipe. These products are extruded with a standard sized outside diameter and different wall thicknesses are used (giving different internal bore sizes) to give the various pressure ratings. As the walls thicken the flow speed and pressure loss will increase. So if say MDOD90 6.3bar pipe is considered for flow of 30,000 l/hr, RX Plastics Technical Guide gives friction loss of 2.9 mH loss/ 100m. Let’s assume the job is 1000m (29mH loss, 42 psi) rather high but for the sake of the example: If during the installation

this were changed to MDOD90 9 bar due to short supply or whatever, the same manual tells us that MDOD90 9 bar at 30,000 l/H has 3.6 mH /100m or 52 psi loss over the distance. 7mH/ 10 psi could mean the performance is possibly going to be short of desired. Feed company to import and deliver molasses nationwide New Zealand-based national feed company GrainCorp Feeds has announced it will offer molasses through its national supply chain. General manager Daniel Calcinai says this change from solely a distributor to an importer and distributor is significant for the dairy industry and will offer farmers greater choice when it comes to their liquid feed requirements. The company will offer the product direct to New Zealand dairy farmers using their national storage facilities, which can hold up 35,000Mt of product. This will streamline the import and distribution process of molasses as a liquid supplementary feed across the country. “Our ports in Tauranga, New Plymouth, Bluff and Timaru are strategically positioned to allow the efficient delivery of molasses throughout New Zealand’s dairy regions,” says Mr Calcinai. “Molasses has a proven history of increasing output and improving quality when used as part of a comprehensive feed programme. “Our priority is to offer New Zealand farmers access to industry leading feed products supported by an efficient supply chain with outstanding customer service.” Mr Calcinai believes that the focus on milk composition with the incoming parameters and potential penalties from inflated fat, measured using

the fat evaluation index (FEI), will encourage the use of feeds other than palm kernel. Molasses provides the flexibility to be fed in its current state or blended with other GrainCorp dry or liquid feeds to help reduce palm kernel consumption and FEI penalties. “It’s widely agreed that molasses is an excellent supplementary feed for

Mesothelioma, the cancer caused by asbestos, is the origin of one in five cancer deaths with an occupational link. Respiratory illness such as asbestosis makes up 20 per cent of work-related deaths. The message comes after a small farming business on the outskirts of Timaru, was sentenced in the Timaru District Court. During the demolition of an old chicken shed in 2016, Topham Holding’s sole director removed sheeting which contained asbestos, without first engaging a competent person to ensure the asbestos was removed. This was despite advice from WorkSafe to Topham Holding a year earlier that there would need to be close management of any asbestos removal. The asbestos removal did not meet the requirements of asbestos regulations. “Topham Holding was aware of the presence of asbestos and was negligent in ignoring the well-known risks of asbestos and our advice about the demolition process, ”WorkSafe’s chief inspector Investigations Keith Stewart said. In 2010, mesothelioma accounted for 100 occupational deaths in New Zealand. “No-one is exempt from managing the risk of asbestos appropriately. Asbestos management is not a job for a layperson — it is a job for a competent

The devastating Port Hills fire last summer showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. Farmers will remember Mr Anderton as a pragmatist who got things done, Federated Farmers President Katie Milne says. “While many Kiwis cherish him as a straight-shooter who spoke up for the disadvantaged and less well off, his significant contribution to the primary sector also should not be forgotten,” says Ms Milne. People in rural communities joined other New Zealanders in mourning the loss of a respected MP and leader who fought hard for the causes he believed in. “There were some raised eyebrows when Helen Clark appointed Mr Anderton as Agricultural and Biosecurity Minister in 2005. Three weeks into the role, he told a meeting of the Federated Farmers National Council that while he didn’t know much about farming compared to his audience, as Economic Development Minister for the previous six years he brought expertise in bringing industries together to improve their economic performance and ‘I’m the minister for getting things done’.” Ms Milne says he turned out to be one of our best agriculture ministers. “He was a strong advocate for the sector, and regularly reminded New Zealanders that farming was the most important source of export income for New Zealand. “I was greatly impressed and inspired as a young leader when I had the privilege of accompanying him when he visited the West Coast in his early days as the new minister. My lasting memory of Jim Anderton is of an approachable

and accessible man who listened and got things done.” He championed the importance of irrigation to the economy, supporting an in-depth study that quantified the economic and environmental value of the Opuha Dam to South Canterbury, and boosting funding assistance for irrigation through the Community Irrigation Fund. His advocacy spurred a significant boost to the sustainable development of the primary sector, including financial support to establish a nationwide network of Rural Support Trust to assist rural communities following adverse events,” Ms Milne says. “Mr Anderton was not afraid of a challenge and would do what was right rather than what was popular. He was one of the ministers who initiated New Zealand taking Australia to the World Trade Organisation over their blockage of New Zealand’s apple access to Australia. “Despite a degree of opposition, he was a strong supporter of the highly successful Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme that came into effect in 2007 to recruit workers from overseas for seasonal work when there are not enough New Zealand workers. “Federated Farmers pays tribute to Mr Anderton, who earned the wide respect of those in the primary sector during the three years he was Minister of Agriculture.”
