Cost Effective Easy To use Improves Soakage Reduces Solids and Scums Eliminates Nasty Odours Reduces Costly Pump-outs
A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. *Results may vary
The Hamilton-based company was recognised for its work manufacturing livestock nutrition products, primarily using Fonterra ingredients. Since its foundation in 2008, NZAgbiz has operated on its circular business model, maximising the lifecycle and reusing of materials, as well as optimising usage. NZAgbiz general manager, Greg Cate, said from the beginning the NZAgbiz aim was to better use Fonterra’s loss streams for the benefit of farmers and the co-op and avoid sending it to landfills. Loss streams include materials such as oversized sifter particles, fine powder particles and cheese trims. As the material is not suitable for human consumption, it would generally end up as landfill waste. “We take this material from Fonterra, and other dairy manufacturing plants, and rework it into useful, high-quality animal nutrition products that help livestock thrive. Mr Cate said these products include calf milk replacers (CMRs), pig products and specialist animal health supplements
such as probiotics, colostrum powder and electrolyte replacements. Any product NZAgbiz cannot rework is on-sold as ingredients for stock feeds, soaps and biofuels. “By recycling dairy industry products, we not only reduce the amount of material going to landfill but maximise and extend the life of the dairy industry’s downgrade product and loss streams to create useful, quality products that benefit New Zealand farmers.” While sustainability was a driving force behind the NZAgbiz model, another key driver was the need to produce quality CMRs that farmers could feed to their calves instead of using more valuable milk from their vat. To date, approximately two million calves have been raised on NZAgbiz CMRs. NZAgbiz received a commendation in the Going Circular category at the awards evening. This category refers to designing products to help create a circular economy in New Zealand. NZAgbiz was one of 11 finalists in this category, beating nine others to receive the commendation.

This year’s No 8 Wire National Art Award entries have opened with a share of $8,500 in prize money on offer. The annual competition, managed by Waikato Museum and partnered by rural supplies co-operative Farmlands, encourages artists, inventors and DIY enthusiasts to create a sculptural artwork made predominantly from No 8 wire, along with other agricultural-based materials. Waikato Museum director, Cherie Meecham, said number eight wire poses a particular challenge for sculpture, and its place in Kiwi culture should be reflected in the entries. “Number eight wire is hardy and not easily manipulated,” she said. “Creating art from such material requires vision, planning, skill and patience. Watching the team grow, developing their passion and experience in farming is the most rewarding aspect of dairy farming for Landcorp farm business manager Tony Dowman.
rowing up on a 10-acre lifestyle block in Taranaki, Tony’s early connections to dairy farming were through grandparents and other close relatives. During visits with extended family members on dairy farms, and attending a rural primary school, Tony developed a desire to go dairying. “I picked up the bug,” he said. When Tony finished high school, he attended the Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre and then headed to Massey University to study towards a diploma in agriculture. Tony completed
2
courses in general rural leadership and rural staff management as well as other business and industry-related programmes. A move back to Taranaki followed where Tony managed a farm in Inglewood and sharemilked on another in Manaia. However, a back injury, caused by trying to fix a jammed milking platform, changed the direction of Tony’s career. He was no longer able to physically farm full-time. Tony’s determination to continue in the industry led him towards farm business management. He took up employment, in a multi-faceted role, with Taratahi in

Wairarapa as general manager of farm business and training, dairy business manager, and farm support officer. Tony’s position involved overseeing dairy farms in the North Island and organising staff training. After eight years with Taratahi, Tony took on the Landcorp farm business manager position in December 2015. Tony oversees the seven dairy farms in the Moutoa complex with herd sizes ranging from 300 to 880 cows. Two of these farms are converting to organics. In 2017, Tony attended the Kellogg Rural Leadership programme which aims to develop leaders for the rural and agri-food sector. Based on a model developed in the US in 1965, the programme was set up in New Zealand in 1979 through the vision of Lincoln University research fellow John Pryde. The WK Kellogg Foundation provided funding — there are two intakes of 24 students each year. Participants are selected from written applications by a committee, which includes representatives from industry partners. The 17-day course is held across a six-month duration, with an individually selected project undertaken between the residential blocks. The programme now has an alumni of more than 700 leaders in the agricultural sector, including John Palmer (former Air NZ and Rabobank chair), Nathan Guy (MP for Otaki), Barbara Kuriger (MP for Taranaki), John Luxton (former MP and chair of DairyNZ), Stu Taylor (founder of
Millennium Farming) and Lindy Nelson (executive director of Agri-Women’s Development Trust). Today, the programme runs under the New Zealand Rural Leadership Trust, which also manages the Nuffield New Zealand Farming Scholarship. A large portion of the programme’s costs is heavily subsidised by their industry partners — this keeps costs to individuals to a minimum. Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme course director, Scott Champion, said visiting the capital city is a key part of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme, both in New Zealand and where it exists overseas. “No other leadership programme provides participants with this level of knowledge in advocacy, influence and political process. The programme prides itself on the diversity of its participants, drawn from across industry sectors, geographical location, gender and role within the rural industry.” As Tony had a growing interest in selfdirected learning, and the commitment needed to understand a research project, he applied to attend the course. “The opportunity to connect with other progressive people and leaders across various parts of the agri-sector was also an appeal,” he said. Tony centred his research project on Recruitment for the Future — Making the Dairy Industry the Career of Choice. He has applied the programme’s learning to his career, and in addition to watching the Landcorp team grow
A large portion of Tony’s job involves office work in skills and knowledge, continues to savour the other job highlights that fall in closely behind. “Seeing an amazing sunrise, wellfed and content cows and seeing cows dripping milk before milking,” said Tony.

Ayrshire performance Since its formation around the middle of last century, the Manarapa Ayrshire Club has grown to a membership of close to 30 families in the Manawatu and Wairarapa regions.
G

Each of these members had their own Ayrshire herds with stud names that became synonymous with the breed. Several of those well-known Ayrshire studs around that time included Tainui, Arran, Cestria, Tararua, Arraworry and Mairie. During those earlier years, club members gathered every two months for meetings. Members also supported

local shows, entering a large number of stock. Additionally, many of the region’s top Ayrshire cows and bulls changed hands at the club’s annual sale. The first Ayrshire to arrive in New Zealand, following a long sea journey from Scotland in 1848, was a bull named Rob Roy. The following year an Ayrshire cow came. A number of the Manarapa Ayrshire Club’s members built on the breed’s foundation, importing bulls from the United Kingdom. These bulls were a valuable source for breeders and made an impact on the dairy industry.

Our latest delivery of this sensational new raspberry has arrived (for this season) and for the first time we have spare plants that will make it to the shop floor. Until now all have been pre-sold! Raspberries are one of those treats that we love — on top of the pavlova, on their own or with a bit of icecream. And for the home garden Mini Me is the easy choice. It is a true dwarf that grows with a nice round compact habit. That makes it ideal for container growing — and perfect for the patio or the smaller garden.
Our ‘wraps’ are cost effective and maintenance free.
While the plant may be small the fruit is full sized and delicious!

Ayrshires first arrived in New Zealand during the middle of the 19th century
Ayrshire New Zealand is divided into nine geographic wards, each represented by a director. Sixteen Ayrshire clubs nationwide are affiliated to Ayrshire New Zealand. The Manarapa Ayrshire Club is located in the Manawatu/Wairarapa ward, stretching from Wellington to Napier and across the Manawatu to Whanganui. Members include a mixture of retirees, active farmers and their families, and even lifestylers with a few animals grazing on their home blocks. The club shares the same vision as Ayrshire New Zealand; to develop, promote and maintain the Ayrshire in New Zealand. Publicity officer, Sian Emslie, said the club assists members in the ward to meet together. “Mostly to discuss Ayrshire New Zealand, but also socially and for regional events such as showing, judging and the New Zealand Dairy Event.” Meetings are usually only held for the club’s AGM. “We are trying to change that, and have meetings more often,” said Sian. “It has been hard to get everyone together due to distance and everyone being very busy.”
An annual on-farm judging competition is held for members to enter dairy cows in a range of classes. A certified judge is invited to each farm to score the cows. The competition concludes with a dinner and awards are presented to the first three placegetters for each class. Herd visits and a variety of social gatherings are also arranged for club members. Occasionally the club hosts visitors from other clubs around New Zealand too. “We also do a production competition, which celebrates the highest producing cows each season, with certificates and prizes as well,” said Sian. Many of the trophies were donated by the club’s early members. Amongst them is the Arran Trophy, awarded for the Ayrshire Young Judge competition. The Donald family of Arran Stud near Featherston have had a long association with the club. Selwyn Donald, a world-renowned dairy cow judge, is the fourth generation to farm Arran Stud. He is also the fourth generation of the Donald family to be involved with the club. Sian said

although Ayrshires are a minority breed in New Zealand, they do match up to the other breeds in individual herds. “This past season, 2017/18, my own Ayrshire heifer — my first cow in-milk — was third best heifer in our herd of 750 cows that are mostly Jerseys.” “A lot of our top cows are Ayrshires,” she said. “Ayrshires are well-known for their type, which is why they make great show cows.” Sian has found Ayshires are also the best foragers, aren’t fussy eaters and are hardy animals. “They have shown that they can perform a lot better in harder environments than the other breeds.” “We are tr ying to prove that Ayrshires are a good option and can perform just as well as other breeds,” she said.

Growing asparagus is a crop the Boyd family have turned into a thriving business venture and now the company, Boyds Asparagus Industries Ltd helps others on the road to success with the highly nutritious vegetable.
“M
y wife Kay and I started growing asparagus in 1980 by default. We were going to have a combined orchard but decided on boysenberries and asparagus — but the harvesting times clashed, so we dropped the berries and concentrated on asparagus,” says Alex Boyd. “Asparagus comes from the Greek word meaning sprout or shoot and is a perennial member of the lily family, which includes onions, leeks, and garlic. The cultivation began more than 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean area.” In 1997, along with 29 other growers, the family began packing under the Boyds trademark. “We guaranteed
our asparagus would be top-quality, picked and bunched fresh daily and we established ourselves as one of the leaders in growing and supply all the main supermarkets here in New Zealand. “We grow approximately 180 hectares of the vegetable around the district and pack around 800 tons annually. During the season from September to December we contract some 200 pickers and employ 100 staff in the packhouse. “Seventy per cent goes to the local market with the balance exported to Japan or the USA.” Asparagus is grown by seed in a nursery for the first year, and then the crowns are lifted and then planted in the fields.

“You let it grow for the first two years so the plant can set itself up for a good production capacity and the next two years you harvest it lightly. Being a perennial, each plant grows for up to 15 years, and in full production, we get six to seven tonnes per hectare each season.” When the spear reaches 23cm in length, with a tight head and good green colour, it is harvested, and more spears appear. “These are washed, trimmed, graded and packed within hours of harvesting and transferred to the chillers immediately to guarantee a superior flavour and freshness. Each plant keeps putting up spears for 90–100 days and is harvested by hand. Near the end of October when the spring weather warms the ground temperature, a spear can grow 20cms in 24 hours hence you have to pick daily. “There are not many growers around anymore. Over the past few years, our main export to Japan has been taken over by Australia due to the cost of freight and production costs. Here you have to invest around $12–14k per hectare to establish a crop, which then takes time to get into commercial production growth. “We manage blocks for other people, and this helps with employment for staff. We believe in helping others advance in the industry and provide the knowledge of our experience. “We guide people with the establishment and maintenance of the

beds, weed and pest control and with arranging and managing pickers during the harvest period. “Asparagus is one of the most friendly crops to grow. We don’t use insecticides, but we do use a pre-emergence spray to stop the weeds growing. Birds don’t worry it — but rabbits and possums can be a problem, however they can be controlled quite quickly. “Our son Ashley is involved in the business, and we are committed to food safety, and all of our suppliers hold either NZGap or Eurepgap Certification. Boyds Asparagus is currently accredited to the Woolworths Quality Assurance, BRC and NZGap food safety programmes. “Asparagus is very good for you, it is high in protein, low in carbs and calories and is high in potassium, magnesium,
calcium, phosphorus and iron. We recommend everyone buy a little often because fresh is best. “Remember the key in keeping the quality good is chilling the product as soon as it is picked, buying a little amount often. Keep them in the fridge when storing at home and eat it as quickly as possible.” To cook asparagus Alex says trim the spears to the desired length, bring a pot of salted water to a rapid boil and add the asparagus. “When the water reboils take the vegetable out and put on a plate with butter, salt and pepper. “It is delicious, and I enjoy it on a thin slice of fresh white bread and butter.”

Ratana is much more than just a day
by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei
As I and around a dozen other National Party colleagues head to Ratana to celebrate the birth of the movement’s founder, we are mindful of the strong heritage of an important pan-iwi organisation right here in the heart of the Rangitikei. The site of pilgrimage of followers of TW Ratana and the birthday celebrations are much more than remembering the founder’s birthday. The annual gathering that signifies the start of the political

calendar year is not just about passionate hakas and a rousing brass band. There are sports events and various activities under canvas; activities, which share viewpoints and encourage connections between hugely diverse groups — there is much goodwill generated. My hope is that those connections and discussions work to help resolve the pressing issues for Maori: unemployment, education, housing and above all opportunity. I welcome the chance to have the spotlight shone on the tiny settlement of Ratana for the few days each year, which lead up to the celebrations and culminate for us with the political engagement. Bill English was the first National Party Leader to attend Ratana in 2002. We participate with gratitude and pride as the days we refer to as ‘Ratana’ have become one of the most important barometers of MaoriPakeha political relationships.

Think before you dump People misusing coastal areas as a dumping ground for unwanted fish frames and shells are being urged to show more courtesy towards others and think of the environment and health hazards this can cause. Ricky Eyre, the Northland Regional Council’s coastal and water quality field operations manager, says it is no surprise at this time of the year that many people flock to the many beautiful coastal areas and islands around the country. “Summer often coincides with a spike in the numbers of people making life unnecessarily unpleasant — and potentially risky — for others by simply dumping fish frames, and the remains of kina, oysters and other shellfish on beaches and coastal margins,” he says. “While dumping of fish frames or shellfish is not allowed under regional council rules, it is still a reasonably common problem, not just at beaches around Northland, but in other parts of New Zealand too. “The regional council generally adopts a fairly pragmatic approach to the issue, appreciating that in some conditions such as in deep, well-flushed waters, the practice realistically poses little risk to other beach users or the environment.” Mr Eyre says when dumped in the intertidal area or on land nearby, including beaches, the waste is a potential risk to other beach users. “You wouldn’t want to stand on a broken kina shell in bare feet, put it that way. Overall, the vast majority of people

do the right thing with fish frames and shells, however, there are always some inconsiderate ones who simply don’t appear to consider others when disposing of their waste. “Similarly, dumping waste like this can affect water quality and attract scavenging stingrays and sharks, again posing a potential risk to other coastal users. “Disposal options include taking waste home and burying it, or in the case of fish frames, you can take advantage of a group set up especially to ensure they don’t go to waste.”

Potential for post-Brexit deal
ADVERTORIAL
Geared to deliver
The NZ International Business Forum, with support from Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association, has released a discussion paper on the potential for a future free trade agreement with the United Kingdom as the UK prepares to leave the European Union. The New Zealand and UK governments have announced their intention to begin free trade agreement negotiations after Brexit, and once the UK is in a position to negotiate independent of the EU. The UK is an important market for the New Zealand sheep and beef sector. New Zealand red meat and associated co-product exports to the United Kingdom totalled about £293 million for the year ending August 2018 with sheepmeat accounting for 86 per cent of the sector’s total exports to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is also a significant market for New Zealand wool, accounting for over £21 million in trade for the year ending August 2018. The New Zealand sheep and beef sector is supportive of the negotiation, at the earliest possible opportunity, of an ambitious, comprehensive and highquality FTA between our two countries that builds on and strengthens the existing trade relationships. Such an FTA has the potential to benefit both

the United Kingdom and New Zealand, through reducing costs, deepening existing partnerships, enhancing value chains and modernising the current trade and economic relationship. By tariff reductions and addressing non-tariff barriers, both sides would benefit from greater access to each other’s markets which would provide consumers with a wider array of competitively priced products and manufacturers with access to highquality, competitively priced inputs.
Trees have the power to inspire awe and wonder, and for generations, they have been part and parcel of the landscape, whether naturally grown or as part of a plan.
Plantings for timber, livestock shelter, shade, fodder, soil conservation and biodiversity can deliver significant benefits. Each adds capital value to your farm and home as well as character and visual appeal. The New Zealand climate offers many tree choices. There’s no real limit to what you can achieve once you get started. However, they need to maintained, and here All-Tree Services plays a vital role. Manual tree felling is one of the highest risk activities and puts your farm, business, yourself and staff at risk. This work should only be carried out by qualified arborists. As business owners, we have a legal obligation to ensure a safe worksite. The Kiwi ‘can do’ attitude we all have can be fatal in the worst case scenario. All-Tree Services run a certificate of competency one-day training course ensuring
your staff is trained with the basics when using chainsaws. All-Tree Services has a substantial fleet of specialised equipment to ensure speed and efficiency and are uniquely placed to provide a vegetation management solution to meet your needs. Our competitive pricing policy, combined with our attention to detail, ensures that all clients looking for high-quality services at reasonable rates do not need to go elsewhere. We provide arboricultural services including tree pruning, shaping, safety bracing, tree and stump removal, plant health care, root barriers, storm damage and emergency work, consultations and advice. We can be contacted on 0800 All Tree (0800 255 8733) or 06 357 8199 if you would like an obligation free quote or visit alltreeservices.co.nz.

Feilding Flooring Xtra
Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.
Murray and Mel Henderson are the new owners of Flooring Xtra in Feilding and local shearing contractors for the Manawatu Region. Murray has been a shearer since he was 17 and with more than 25 years’ experience, he is well known in the rural community. He started his shearing run about 12 years ago called BaaZilians and shears in the Manawatu/ Rangitikei area. “I have always had a passion for shearing and travelled all over the world with this job. It’s an awesome industry to be involved in, and I’ve made a lot of friends. I can be found competing in shearing shows most weekends, and have made the Golden Shears final the last three years. “When the opportunity came to purchase Flooring Xtra we jumped at it. Mel has worked in the industry for the last 14 years, so it was a natural progression,” says Murray. The shop has been in this location for the last 30 years, previously owned by Andrew and Julie White. “They actually trained me in flooring in the early years, so for me, it’s like coming home. “We have a fabulous retail team with an eye for interior design, and they make buying flooring a hassle free enjoyable experience. We have

all your flooring needs, from carpet to vinyl, laminate to tiles — we are a one-stop shop when it comes to flooring,” says Mel. Both having rural backgrounds, Mel and Murray are passionate about New Zealand wool carpets. “Wool is a beautiful product. It is naturally warm, sustainable, durable and easy to clean and maintain; it looks great for many years. “Being naturally fire resistant and non-allergenic makes wool carpet the perfect product for the family home. We love to show off our carpets and gorgeous wool rugs, so pop in-store and have a look.” Feilding Flooring Xtra offers free measure and quotes from Feilding to Waiouru. They travel far and wide, and love getting out in the rural community. “We enjoy being involved with the Manawatu and surrounding districts, helping people with their flooring and shearing needs and we look forward to continuing our involvement for many years.” We look forward to seeing you instore at 7 MacArthur Street, Feilding.

Trail blazer by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to flat out speed across rough terrain, the Can Am Maverick has the heritage, the race-bred pedigree and the sheer power to make you believe you’re actually in the cockpit of a lowflying jet fighter. Watching the Maverick’s masterwork of suspension in slow motion as those big knobbly tyres claw at the sand and dirt is an engineering class in itself. So it’s a natural progression for the product development team at Can Am headquarters to think about applying this race-winning formula to a different discipline. Throw into the mix the toughness and nimble handling of their farming and hunting off roaders — made for less speed and more practicality — and you have one of the best ideas wrapped around an internal combustion engine since Ford put a v8 in the first edition Mustang. The new Maverick Trail is only 50 inches wide — that’s 1.27 metres and that means rocky, twisting trails are its natural habitat. Still seating two in fully roll-cage enclosed comfort, this little firecracker is designed to inspire confidence with a whole lot of low-down torque from a 1000cc, 75 horsepower Rotax engine fed air through high-mounted filtered intakes to keep clear of the dust. There’s also the option of a 51hp 800cc mill, but that famous one litre power plant comes with a list of racing wins as long as your arm in

other chassis, so adventure seekers might seek out the bigger displacement for more thrills. The Maverick Trail is not just easy to transport — though needless to say that small footprint works well when it’s time to put it on a trailer or up on a truck deck. The application of a deliberately feedback-rich power steering system means that there’s no struggling and sweating to wrestle with the wheel; at low speeds the system adjusts to give more of a boost, helping out when the trail is choppy or in tight corners. This is a machine for the explorers, the trail blazers, those who want to really get Can Am Maverick Trail Blazer is a true masterpiece out into the wilderness and need a machine as unstoppable as additional electric power — pick and the legendary drover’s horse of days choose from winches, lights and other gone by. Knowing this, Can Am have accessories to make this off road even fitted an upgraded magneto for machine truly personalised.

‘Watch time’ for myrtle rust
Oi!
Summertime is ‘watch time’ with Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation asking the public to check their local myrtle plants to help track the spread of myrtle rust, with the disease likely to be more active during warmer weather and likely to spread to new areas where it hasn’t been seen before.

People are asked to keep an eye out for myrtle rust
rust, Dr Fiona Thomson, says that a large programme of seed collection is underway to safeguard native myrtle species from extinction. “Everyone has an important role to play in biosecurity. The more eyes looking out for myrtle rust means the better we can monitor this disease and protect our precious myrtles.”

research to develop new tools, build understanding of myrtle rust and explore possible long-term management options with a $3.7 million programme of research. An additional $5 million funding increase from the Strategic Science Investment Fund will build on work already being done by Government agencies, Maori, councils, and research providers over the next three years,” Mr Sanson says. In the meantime, it is important to understand where the rust has spread to, what plants it is affecting (especially new ones) and where it is active. DOC’s project manager for myrtle

Plants including pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka and ramarama are vulnerable to the disease. The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds, and young leaves of myrtle plants. Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves. If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust remember to not touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66. As of December the disease has been confirmed on 811 properties across most of the North Island and upper areas of the South Island. Taranaki, Auckland and Bay of Plenty are the most seriously affected areas. Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John Sanson, says a cross-sector working group has developed a national longterm management plan for myrtle rust. “This working group includes members from Biosecurity New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Maori organisations with an interest in biosecurity, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, regional councils, and the Project Crimson Trust. “The group has provided recommendations on agreed goals that will underpin our collective approach to managing myrtle rust. We are also investing significantly in scientific

Stink bugs in mail People are reminded to check online purchases after an infestation of Brown Marmorated stink bugs recently got through border biosecurity checks. MPI says this is a warning to people purchasing items over the internet and with the booming uptake in couriers delivering parcels from overseas, MPI Biosecurity’s are encouraging people to take the right steps if they find insects or plant material in their packages. A man recently found 26 Brown Marmorated stink bugs in a box of shoes ordered over the internet. The bugs got through biosecurity measures at the New Zealand border. On opening the parcel, the man immediately took the shoes and wrapping to his bathroom, closed the door and window, and called the Ministry for Primary Industries. The insects were quickly contained and killed, to no longer pose a biosecurity threat. Biosecurity is critical for many people’s jobs, and livelihoods rely on healthy agriculture and orchards. Even if you are not working directly in these areas, your lifestyle and income rely on that economy not being devastated by stink bugs or any other pests.
It is not physically possible for MPI to check every parcel, so all New Zealanders need to be biosecurity watchdogs and alert MPI immediately if you find insects or plant material in any parcel from overseas. The stink bug is a major problem in parts of North America after being accidentally introduced from Asia. It is also established in Europe and South America, and many insecticides are not effective controlling it. There are also other insects and plant pests that have the potential to ruin crops or native plants. The adults are approximately the size of a $1 coin and have white banding on the antennae, alternate black and white markings on the abdomen and the eggs that are light green, barrel-shaped and found in clusters of 20 to 30. MPI Biosecurity’s website has information to help with identification and to differentiate this bug from similar local species. If you think you have found one — catch it in a jar and call MPI immediately on 0800 80 99 66.
