Spotlight on summer science programmes

Throughout this summer, Horizons Regional Council is highlighting some of the environmental science and monitoring programmes used to assist in the development of its policies and decision-making. Horizons chair Rachel Keedwell said the council’s vision for the region is Tō tātou rohe — taiao ora, tangata ora, mauri ora/Our place — a healthy environment where people are thriving. Close to 300 Horizons staff members can be found in the wider Manawatū— Whanganui region during the year, collecting environmental data, monitoring swim spots, freshwater management, fixing barriers to native fish passage, managing pest plants and animals, and planting to prevent nutrients and sediment entering waterways. “Horizons’ science and monitoring programmes help us to report on the state of our environment and inform our decisions, including refining our approach, to ensure that we target the right issues with the right actions,” said Cr Keedwell. A summer science series, running until the end of March, will place a spotlight on just some of the council’s environmental science programmes, with a particular emphasis on freshwater, biodiversity, and climate change. “The health of freshwater is one of our priority areas, with our research and monitoring activities helping to determine how water is allocated, how quality can be maintained and improved, and how use is changing over time,” said Cr Keedwell.

Swim spot sampling by a Horizons science team member

Rachel Keedwell — Horizons Regional Council chair

Information gathered from measuring river flows, groundwater levels, rainfall levels and water quality is used to report, analyse and support policy and programme decisions. Each year, between November and April, a science team from Horizons monitors the health of 80 swim spots for potentially toxic algae (Cyanobacteria) and E coli at freshwater sites and Enterococci at coastal sites.

All results are updated on the Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA) website, lawa.org. nz, where interactive maps show each of the swim spots tagged by a red, amber or green location maker to indicate whether it is safe to swim that week. Horizons science manager Lizzie Daly said E coli and Enterococci are indicators of faecal contamination that at high levels indicate a potential risk to human health. “Weekly samples collected from each of the region’s monitored swim spots are sent to an independent accredited lab for testing,” said Dr Daly. “Results for these two indicators are received within 48 hours.

“Cyanobacteria appear as black mats on rocks in rivers and as green scum in and above water in lakes. These mats eventually peel off the rocks and wash up on river banks. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and dogs.” Cr Keedwell said recognising Te Mana o te Wai and ensuring that the environment is left in a good state for future generations drives many of Horizons’ freshwater activities. Updated information can be found at horizons.govt.nz and the council’s social media accounts.

FARMING FOR

FUTURE GENERATIONS BY DENISE GUNN Rangitikei sheep and beef farmers Richard and Laura Morrison established The Gullies in 2020, focussing on ethical livestock genetics.

T

he couple own New Zealand’s original Wiltshire flock, dating back to the early 1980s. Richard and Laura also run a composite flock, which is largely a Wiltshire/Texel cross, and a Hereford herd, on their 250ha property near Marton. Their farm was purchased from the wider Morrison family farming business after the couple decided to farm independently. Six generations of the Morrison family have farmed at Fern Flats. Their original farm, Burnbank, was named after the small Scottish town the Morrisons emigrated from. Richard and Laura also lease a part of that block, alongside The Gullies, and have named their herd Burnbank Herefords. Laura grew up on a 61ha dairy farm in Thornton and later went to boarding school in Cambridge. “I’ve been hugely influenced by my father who impressively topped dairy production nationwide in the 90s with an all-grass system, and cared deeply for our herd. But he never let his work/life balance get out of kilter.

“I believe strong husbandry at a base level will set you up for all kinds of adversities and equip you with the ability to always be thinking about contingency. “While my technical farming skill base is very much still in its infancy, my approach is a blend of lateral and logical thinking with very high levels of empathy, optimism and big sky thinking. It took me getting together with Richard back in 2015 to realise just how much of a true farmer I am.” The Gullies covers a mixture of gorge country and fertile, free-draining loam flats, receiving rainfall of around 1,000ml annually. Richard said sheep suit the system. “Our winter and early spring can be a challenge, but the feed comes away late spring/early summer when lambs are coming on stream.” The Wiltshire flock is free-range, grazing the gorge country. “Weaning and general management can be delayed until it suits us to bring them forward for sale.”

11

Richard and Laura own New Zealand’s original Wiltshire flock and also run a composite flock

Morrison Wiltshires are sold to lifestylers, orchardists, organic farmers and mainstream farmers throughout New Zealand. “We really value our client relationships. The ones that return year after year clearly align with our philosophy, and it makes farming a real joy to share our passion as widely as possible,” said Laura. “Our composites are an attractive proposition to those farmers who want to dip their toes into self-shedding and lowinput sheep farming.

“While the breed suits mainstream, large-scale sheep farmers who focus on sheep production and performance, any farm where this is paramount will see our composites complementing that system.” The Morrison’s composites are early prime lambs, finished on plantain/chicory and lucerne. “We annually lamb 1,000 ewes and 300 hoggets and sell 100 performancerecorded rams annually. We also have 60 performance-recorded Hereford cows calving annually,” said Richard.

Burnbank Herefords focus on temperament, soundness, low birth weight and ease of calving

“Our cows are currently in their second year of calving, so we are thrilled to have this newly established herd thriving.” Since purchasing The Gullies, Richard and Laura continue to fence off waterways and gorges filled with native bush, as well as improve the grazing platform. An empty cottage on the farm has been renovated and is used as boutique accommodation to supplement the couple’s income. “The cottage building is only three years old, so it was a joy to decorate and furnish with beautiful things that offer a farmstay fit for everyday luxury,” said Laura. Laura’s interest in art has extended to offer a yearly eight-week arts residency. The Gullies Art Residency provides accommodation in the cottage for an artist to work on their practice as well as explore the farm.

The couple ensures their biological farming system takes care of the environment for future generations

Involvement with charities is another branch of the farming operation. “One of my best friends is involved with Trees that Count, so I’ve seen just how authentic and dedicated the charity is,” said Laura. “It’s easy to plant, photograph and record our plantings, so I thought why not offer that to our guests as well. They make a donation, and we match that with the money to Trees that Count and an extra tree to plant here on the farm.” The Gullies is also a donor and supplier to Meat the Need, helping towards the contribution of mince going into 200,000 food parcels last year. With two young sons, Richard and Laura ensure their biological farming system looks after the environment for future generations. 3 11

As one of three Fairlight Foundation interns, Ella Eades is receiving comprehensive farming education to prepare for any role in the agricultural industry.

Her parents owned sheep and beef farms throughout her childhood, and she grew up on an Ohakune lifestyle block. “Ever since I can remember, I have always been an animal lover. Zealand, Ella studied towards a Bachelor of Science, majoring in animal science, at Massey University. Ella thought this degree would be a good foundation and provide some direction towards an animal-based career. “I was mostly interested in production animals, going into this degree because I grew up around farming and loved it. Straight after university, I got a job working at Asure Quality as a surveillance technician for Mycoplasma bovis. 5

“This job took me to heaps of farms all around the North Island, which was a great experience. I really enjoyed working with cattle and being outside. I wanted to be more involved in farming, and I just happened to stumble across the Fairlight Foundation.” The Fairlight Foundation course, based on Fairlight Station in northern Southland, aims to equip more women as leaders in agriculture by providing a practical, comprehensive farming education. The 2,500ha property runs 18,000 stock units with 50% red deer and the remainder beef and sheep. Main farm shareholders, Doug and Mari Harpur live in Canada. Simon and Lou Wright are also shareholders and manage the farm. “Fairlight has two tractor generals, one stock manager and a shepherd,” said Ella.

10

A career working with animals was one of Ella’s goals

As the interns live and work on the farm, the 12-month course contains a large, practical component. Experts in different aspects of the agricultural industry regularly visit to give tutorials and team-building exercises.

Most of the time, it’s a Zoom call, or they come to the farm. “It’s a great environment to learn in because everyone is keen to help us, and they are all really patient. The foundation has gone above and beyond to provide us with quality education.” In April, Ella and the other two interns were each given a heading dog pup. One of the course highlights was helping out with the local dog trials. “We have been learning how to train them from the help of people in the community and on-farm.” Physical fitness has been Ella’s main challenge on the course.

3

“My fitness levels at the start of the year have definitely improved compared to now, especially strength-wise. There were a few times there was a bit of a mental challenge or me thinking I couldn’t do something. “I didn’t think I could bring myself to kill a sheep if I had to, but I’ve done it enough times now that I’m confident doing it when I have to.” When Ella’s internship finishes, she plans to go shepherding for a few years. “I just love being outside doing physical work with stock and dogs. It’s a great lifestyle. After that, I’m not sure what I will want to do, but long-term goals are ideally farm ownership.”

A FRUITFUL TASTE

OF LIQUEUR BY DENISE GUNN

Four years ago, a successful experiment steeping home-grown Damson plums in alcohol sowed the seed that led to the creation of a boutique business producing fruit liqueurs.

B

rett and Cheryl Percival bought their 13-acre Waikanae lifestyle block in 2014. Originally owned by Richard Nash, son of Sir Walter Nash, the property is tucked under the foothills of the Kapakapanui Ranges. A variety of fruit trees grow in three orchard areas. Brett said the original heritage orchard, which includes one of every type of tree, was established early last century on the property’s lower silt terrace. “The trees are getting a bit old but retain that specific taste. In total, we

have about 24 old trees, including apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots and quince. “A second orchard was established around the house, probably from the early 1980s. This includes a few more modern varieties of apple, plum, fig, feijoa, apricot, lemon, then one lime, tamarillo, as well as grape and passionfruit vines, and gooseberry bushes.” Growing up on farms in Hawke’s Bay, Brett went on to study agriculture and resource management at university. He

then moved to the South Island to manage Crown lands. Although he never returned home to the family farm, owning a lifestyle block was high on Brett’s bucket list. Cheryl grew up as a townie in Petone but spent several Easter holidays on a King Country farm that her family had ties to. The couple intended to keep a wide range of animals on their land for the grandchildren to enjoy. However, work commitments limited this to a small flock of sheep, poultry and a retired heading dog. Cheryl works full-time as a human resource practitioner in Wellington. Brett worked in strategic finance and now manages the day-to-day operation of their boutique brewery. The business was named 5036 Boutique Brews Limited to reflect the property’s postal code. With an abundance of fruit from their trees, Brett and Cheryl shared the excess with neighbours, friends and anyone who wanted to pick their own. “The small, dark, round, purple plums were a mystery,” said Cheryl. “However, a Google search confirmed they were an English Damson plum that

3

when steeped in alcohol made a delicious liqueur. A home-still kit was purchased, and the production of home-brewed alcohol was underway. “A lot of experimentation ensued over the next couple of years, using all sorts of fruits in quantities ranging from five-litre to 50-litre containers.”

With the acquisition of two 1,500 litre milk vats, the focus turned to creating recipes for the signature range of 13% alcohol by volume (ABV), Plum on Ice products. One of these was Damson and the other Boutique (an orchard mix of plums). Cheryl said before long, the experiments had grown into more than a hobby.

We Offer:

“The feedback and collective view were that the Plum on Ice (liquid gold) products held significant potential for marketing as a business. Attention turned to the compliance requirements and setting up a home occupation business in our garage.” Cheryl’s background in food and health and safety provided an understanding of the compliance aspects. an operation to meet food safety and customs legislative requirements wasn’t too challenging. Their biggest learnings were in the areas of alcohol compliance and the technical aspects of quality fruit liqueur production. “The goal was to produce a unique, quality, home-grown and delicious boutique product for discerning tastes. A product that was versatile, offered a selection of choices for a range of occasions, both affordable and could be enjoyed by all demographics,” said Cheryl. Cheryl said as a liqueur is defined as sweetened alcohol, the initial thinking was that the terminology around this would limit the broad target markets. “The beautifully bold and balanced brews were launched with the branding

of Plum on Ice. In 2020, having listened to feedback, we increased the alcohol content from 13% to 20% ABV. We focussed on educating the exceptional versatility of our products and subsequently rebranded our 20% product range as a liqueur.” Friends and family pitched in with practical hands-on support and creative business ideas. Then, in November 2020, 5036 Boutique Brews Ltd was launched at the Kapiti Food Fair. Brett and Cheryl have since expanded their reach to several markets and events in the lower North Island. “The overarching goal is to develop into a successful, future-focussed and sustainable, commercial business nationally, and who knows, potentially internationally.”

For Home Owners DO YOU WANT THE WARM WALL FEEL OF A NEW HOME?

Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

Rotating your mattress seasonally, can also help maintain a healthy mattress life. The objective is to make your mattress wear evenly, avoiding impressions of the body that are created over time. Lastly, avoid eating or drinking in bed. It may sound comforting but won’t do your mattress or sheet any favours. Sometimes these comments are made by people in their early thirties! We are shocked at how people have come to accept dysfunction, pain and ill-health as an inevitable part of life and ageing. What we’d like everyone to know is: It’s never too late to feel better! According to research conducted by the Rand Corporation that develops solutions to help make communities safer, secure, healthier and more prosperous, chiropractic care is associated with signifi cant improvement in health-related quality of life over time. A case study published in The Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (sciencedirect.com/science/article/ abs/pii/S155637071100167) demonstrates that an elderly person, suffering many serious comorbidities can still experience improvements to pain and wellbeing when receiving appropriate chiropractic care. Here at GMC Chiropractors, we aren’t purporting to ‘cure’ everyone, but we may be able to help improve function, movement and reduce both acute and chronic pain even in the elderly and diseased population. We work with the individual to achieve their health goals by correcting subluxations in the spine

Move over Vincent

January 2022

by Liz Clark

When Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh painted his famous sunflower series, using three shades of yellow ‘and nothing else’, little did he know they would come in many shades; yellow and everything else. Forget about the sunflower being that towering plant with one single large flower, planted en mass in a vast paddock. These days, gardeners can buy seeds for dwarf, medium-height, multi-branched and towering varieties. Moreover, sunflowers are easy to grow and a great way to get the younger generations involved in the garden. Sowing of sunflower seeds can be done from August until January, in good free-draining soil. Choose a sheltered, sunny location because these plants love the sun. Sunflowers are heliotropic; meaning their flowers follow the sun from east to west, something to consider when planting. While they need water, the plants are surprisingly drought tolerant and will withstand the fierce heat of the New Zealand summer. The period from germination to flowering ranges between 50–100 days with the tallest varieties taking the longest. When planting out seeds, one of the things to be aware of is that mice can and will destroy your carefully planted seeds before they have a chance to germinate. Planting directly is more beneficial for height; however, if you have a problem with field mice eating the seeds, start in punnets first and transplant once germination has taken place. Protect the

seedlings from slugs and snails using non-toxic bait or remove by hand. For young gardeners, dwarf sunflowers are an ideal way to get them keen. Sow in pots in a sunny position and keep well watered. Available varieties include the delightful and aptly named fluffy petalled Teddy Bear, Petite Bouquet, Incredible Dwarf, Yellow Pygmy and Big Smile. Other varieties to investigate are the multi-stemmed and spectacular deep red Moulin Rouge. This pollenfree hybrid grows to a height of more than 1.2 metres tall. Once established, it is self-supporting and won’t need staking. It makes an ideal cut flower for anyone who is allergic to pollen. Another stunning cultivar to try out is Chocolate Cherry. As its name suggests, the flowers are a rich, chocolate burgundy; it’s also multi-stemmed. It matures 75 days after sowing and grows to a height of more than 180cm — popular for borders. Finally, if you want to make your own botanical version of New York City, then Skyscraper is the one to look out for. Growing to more than five metres, this gigantic stunner will get heads turning. The golden petalled flower heads can be more than 45cm across and weigh several kilograms. Staking is essential for the first metre or so of growth.

Sunflowers are heliotropic, following the course of the sun from east to west

Sunflowers don’t just come in yellow anymore; they can range from deep chocolate hues to reds, purple and flaming orange

There’s nothing better than the excitement of seeing your first sunflower unfurling on a warm day

Pollen-free sunflower cultivars are the choice for bouquets and ideal for anyone with pollen allergies wanting indoor floral arrangements
