ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
septi-cure is: › Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage
› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*

Authorities around the region have the estimated cost of recovery at around $120 million. Horizons regional recovery manager Ged Shirley says this includes social, built, and economic costs to business, but doesn’t include costs to the rural sector. This estimate is likely to be refined as further impacts come to light. Rural Support Trusts around the region play a big part in the recovery phase and coordinators are in place. Lower North Island farmers are now able to access Rural Assistance Payments (RAPs). Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy said local Rural
Support Trusts will be coordinating with farmers to facilitate RAPs for those in need. Social Development minister Anne Tolley said many rural people may be reluctant to ask for help, but support is available for those in extreme hardship. Mrs Tolley encourages anyone struggling as a result of the flooding to get in touch with Work and Income. Applications are also open for the Manawatu-Whanganui Disaster Relief Fund Trust, with applications via local councils. The funding round will close on Friday 24 July 2015.

Farmer experience ‘bottled’ to help dairying bounce back

DairyNZ has created a new online resource detailing the financial spending of top performing dairy farms. This is part of the organisation’s work to help farmers cope with lower milk prices and set the industry up for a speedy recovery. Economic modelling shows if farmers can decrease their potential loss by up to $1/kg MS this season they could recover from the low milk price three to four years faster. DairyNZ general manager of research and development David McCall said one of the ways to capture this dollar is by spending on the right things and implementing good budgetary control of costs. “This is where we can learn from the best, so we’ve created new online information to help show farmers where to prioritise their spend and how to make savings.” “Dairy farmers have asked us for more practical and specific data on which to benchmark themselves — we have listened to that feedback,” said Mr McCall. “We’ve pulled together in-depth budgets from a number of top performing farms nationwide with a sub $3.50/ kg MS cost of production. These top performing farms have honed their farm systems. Many of these farmers have learnt lessons from past downturns to build resilience. We’ve bottled that experience in a sense, by creating a new online benchmarking tool that will

enable dairy farmers to identify areas for improvement.” DairyNZ estimates the average New Zealand farm will lose around $150,000 to $200,000 at the current forecast payout for 2015/16. Whilst the average farmer could take a few years to repay this loss, the top 20 per cent farmer would be able to recover much sooner. This latest online tool builds on existing information provided through 29 Tactics for Tight Times farmers who have been sharing their decision-making and tips to get through a low milk price period, since February.

lake Moore was just seven years old when he first visited a dairy farm. After that initial visit, he was hooked, spending as much time as possible on his friends’ farms. “That is where my passion for farming began,” he said. Following on from high school, Blake continued his education through Primary ITO. He passed National Certificates
in Agriculture — Animal Feeding and Pastures (Level 3) and Dairy (Level 4) this year. The 21-year-old is currently into his fourth season working for the Olsen Agriculture Partnership in Opiki. Starting out as dairy assistant, Blake has moved up the ranks to now hold the assistant farm manager position, milking a 750 spring-calving herd on a 220ha effective

dairy unit. The dairy unit is managed by Shaun Olsen. Olsen Agriculture is a mixed farming operation focussing on dairy, beef and cropping. Blake said he loves working outdoors and in a job where there are a vast variety of tasks to be completed each day. “Whether it be something as small as dealing with animals which all have their own personalities, to tractor work through to fencing.” “At first the challenge was getting used to being independent and making big decisions on my own, learning how to deal with pressure and nerves.” “That’s something that has improved with age,” he said. Blake said his preparations in the lead-up to this year’s Manawatu Dairy Awards were very limited. “At first I was sceptical about entering and having the pressure to win after placing second last year. “So the small amount of time I had, I was revising my notes from throughout my year of doing my Primary ITO level four papers.” The competition involved both a practical and an interview section to test entrant’s knowledge of the dairy industry. “And to see what my pathway forward in my career was like,” said Blake. “The practical covered off day-to-day tasks I may encounter on farm.” Blake said he was shocked when his name was called as the winner. “I was not expecting to win as there was a high calibre of competition among my peers. It took over a week for the reality to sink in and wasn’t until after

Working outdoors with animals is a big drawcard the national final week that it really sunk in how big an achievement it was.” Maintaining a good work life balance is important to Blake. He is into his second season as captain of the Te Kawau Colts rugby team, enjoys hunting, and spending any spare time with friends and family. “I’m also heavily involved with the Opiki Young Farmers Club and have been so for the past three years,” he said. With plans to work through this current season, and to attain his truck licence, Blake has also set steps in place to achieve his long term goal of farm ownership by 2035.
“Long term I see myself travelling to Australia next year, then onto Europe for an overseas experience before I settle into the next step of my career.” Blake said this next step will be obtaining a contract milking position of around 700 cows. He then plans to build up equity to buy his own herd and move onto a 50 percent sharemilking position. Blake also won the Horizons Regional Council Farming Knowledge, and DairyNZ Practical Skills awards for the second year in a row.

he 30-year-old recently won the lower North Island regional final of the Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year. Vernon started his apprenticeship in December 2012 at New World Marton. “Previously I was working in the dairy industry as a process operator making cheese, anhydrous milk fat and many other products,” said Vernon. Raised in the small village of Arapuni in the Waikato, Vernon moved to Marton the day before he took on his butchery apprenticeship. He has now been practicing his craft and improving his skills for two and a half years. “I have learnt a lot through the block courses we have each year as part of the three-year trade training as well as help from my colleague, Casey Wood.” Vernon also looks to YouTube video clips for guidance and inspiration.

competitors. The competition has been running for over two decades and begins with five regional competitions. Entrants have to sit a written exam to test their communication skills and knowledge of the trade, participate in an interview and carry out a practical cutting test. Contestants are given three cuts of meat — a size No. 20 chicken, beef rump, and pork loin. They are then required to complete a number of compulsory elements as well as a minimum of one creative option from each cut. All this is to be completed within a two-hour time period under the watchful eyes of judges looking at safety, hygiene, display, speed and efficiency. The winning young butcher and apprentice competitor from each region then goes on to the Grand Final where they have to undertake the same testing process. An additional mystery cut and an on-stage element is also included to test the finalists. Eleven entrants took part in this year’s lower North Island regional final. Vernon said when the two hours were up, he was able to step back for a second and acknowledge what a great job the other competitors had done. Finding out he was chosen as the regional winner came as a surprise to Vernon. “I was absolutely speechless, overwhelmed and excited to be moving onto the next step of the competition,” he said. Honda quad bikes have been a driving force in rural New Zealand for decades, with a similar staying power as the venerable Massey Ferguson tractor and the Toyota Hilux when it comes to onfarm popularity. That’s not a position which can be kept by standing still, and Honda are careful when designing a new machine to keep the best of the old and incorporate those new little tweaks and changes which most benefit their core market. In an era when many of the ATVs coming into the country seem to have been designed for multiple purposes, hunting and leisure as well as farming. The TRX 500 then, is a chip off the ‘old school’ block. Not in terms of its underpinning technology, for the 500cc Honda is fully equipped with electronic fuel injection for a power boost over the old model, and electric-manual gear selection system as used in modern sports cars.
It’s in the area of design and robust construction that Honda have listened to their farming constituency, incorporating features for improved toughness and upping the TRX 500’s capacity for hard work. This is not a quad bike geared toward leisurely trail rides in the country. It’s a farming tool first and foremost, as evidenced by the use of a swing-arm fixed rear axle. Why is this indicative of the Honda’s farming focus? Well, an independent suspension system in back would make more sense for busting the trails at high speeds. This setup means you can tow more and lug more without bottoming out in the mud. It also means less body roll on the steep bits that’s where the TRX 500 is quite at home, tackling New Zealand’s often far from flat pasturelands with
a load on. Honda’s focus on farming even goes as far as extra guards to keep that ever present mud out of the moving parts, and a rear rack that is the perfect size for that other vital farming essential, the dog. An economical 500cc configured with the signature Honda low centre of gravity provides enough power for any day’s work on the land, while still delivering in the vicinity of 100km to a single tank of gas.

Versatility is the key to success for tractors in the hotly contested 100–150 horsepower segment, with the ability to cover a wide range of tasks on the farm proving popular, as savvy farmers invest in a ‘swiss army knife’ approach to their machinery. Kubota have taken this ethos a step further than most with their latest M-series tractors, delivering a range of machines spanning from 100 to 135 horsepower which are as adept at feeding out to the herd as they are undertaking cropping operations. Rather than being focused on one particular form of primary production, the MGX 135 and its little brothers down the HP range are designed, like the old dependable tractors of yesteryear, to simply go where they are needed. Aside from the bulletproof nature of Kubota’s low-emission diesel mill under the hood, this has been achieved largely through clever design. Class-leading underbody clearance and the ability to fit row-crop friendly narrow wheels makes the MGX fit right in on a cropping farm, while the option to fit a powerful hydraulic bucket up front is welcome in any operation. Add to this a smart PTO memory system which remembers the revolutions per minute needed for the optimum use of a range of trailed or mounted implements, and this mediumsized tractor begins to truly punch above its weight. A versatile tractor is often

Fieldays, and offerings like the MGX series can only do more to ensconce the brand’s name in the top echelons of agricultural machinery. As farmers look to get the most machine for their money, you can expect that many more will be put through their paces for a test drive this season.

Safe cycling to LAC
Hostel life
I joined Ad Astra Hostel in year 9, and starting was a nervewracking experience, especially since I was a quiet farm girl who kept to herself. It turned out that the move became a huge confidence builder that forced me out of my shell. I soon realised that most of the other year 9s were in the same situation as I was. It turned out that realising this was the best way to accept that I had become a hostel girl. I instantly knew that my stay at hostel would be determined by how I involved myself in hostel life. I got involved in everything and now, as a year 12 student, I know I have found life-long friends. To anyone starting life at a hostel, whether it’s at Wanganui Girls’ College (where I study) or anywhere else, make yourself known in as many
positive ways possible. This really helped me get closer with prefects and other leaders at hostel. To me, this was important so I knew if there was anything I wasn’t sure about, I would have someone I could go to. I also made a choice to not fear being myself, because I learnt there were others who wanted to join in and be just like me. My last advice would be to have the time of your life because there is nothing more fulfilling than to look back on the memories you made as a hostel girl. By Shannon Te Kira, Year 12 student at Wanganui Girls’ College (from Kimbolton)

Six years ago, as a senior student at Longburn Adventist College, Scott Southward led a campaign to the Palmerston North City Council for a safe cycle track to LAC.
“As part of his senior school project, Scott chose a bigger project than usual with the cycleway idea. After gaining support from local businesses and the community, the change of council delayed progress on the project, and it was not going to be completed until 2022,” said LAC marketing administrator Eifion Paul. “Thanks to all the groundwork set in place by Scott, and his continued campaigning with Palmerston North City Council, the proposed pathway was brought forward to become the first pathway completed under the New Zealand government’s Urban Cycleways Project.”
The $900,000 pathway was officially unveiled on July 2, with the specially lit crossing to Walkers Road and LAC getting their solar powered warning signs installed a week later. “Thanks to Scott and his forward thinking, the cycleway is a huge advantage for the whole school and Longburn community, giving access to the city. It has made it so much safer for people and it has especially helped the boarding students as they are able to get out and about more safely. They can now be a bigger part of the community as they were a bit cut off before,” said Mr Paul.

First aid prepared Learn the ABCD’s of first aid and appropriate responses to an emergency situation. Would you be prepared if first aid skills were suddenly needed at any time. Did you know that hazard management and first aid fit together? Do you know what may be needed and what is not supposed to be in your workplace First Aid Kit, which medications shouldn’t be in there and what is necessary? The first step in first aid is a hazard management plan. Health and safety and the hazard management process are used to help determine your first aid requirements. Are you aware that being exposed to chemical and biological hazards pose a danger to people’s health? Do you know what to do in a situation where a person has been exposed, at the time of exposure? By identifying the hazard, the risk can then be determined whether it
be high, medium or low. Steps can then be put in place to eliminate, isolate or minimise the hazards, therefore reducing the risk of further injury to the patient or others. Some instances may require safely removing the person from the area if possible and minimising or eliminating the hazard for others coming onto the scene. DAIRY COMPLIANCE Investing in compliance infrastructure by Andy Bryenton
As the new season begins in farming, all eyes have been on the success of the recent agricultural field days in the Waikato — a barometer of the health of this vital sector of the economy. Despite a lower than average payout for those in the dairy trade, those commentators who have watched the rural market for many years have been pleased to note that the cyclical nature of agriculture has been recognised — while spending on nonessential items has indeed waned, farmers are still working smart to ensure compliance with the standards expected of them by those who they supply with primary goods.
As in any industry, standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced and equitable relationship between the producer and supplier, with guarantees of quality enforced, in this case, for the best of reasons — the health not only of consumers, but of New Zealand’s reputation as a top-grade exporter. Thus, farmers are still investing in the important equipment which allows them to run a modern, healthy and quality-controlled operation, whether

in dairy, dry stock or even in cropping. Of course the dairy sector is in the spotlight at this time, and the nature of the goods produced by these hardworking farmers means that their plant and infrastructure are held to rigorous standards. Fonterra’s handbook for suppliers outlines a list of key areas in which contributing dairy farmers must comply, from the purity of water used for operations (including lack of harmful bacteria and other residues) through to a robust chiller system used to bring milk down to temperature prior to collection. It’s not just the equipment in and around the milking shed which must meet new standards. As an example of wider requirements, Fonterra now requires new, repaired, or structurally upgraded tanker roadway bridges or crossings to be certified to Farm Maintenance Specialists

standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced and equitable relationship” at least 53 tonne, allowing safe access for their fleet. Waterways must be fenced to ensure environmental standards are met, with results in stream and river purity already being felt in the Waikato as a result. These factors, along with the machinery required to hygienically wash down milking sheds and equipment, and the modern milking systems needed to cut back on ills like mastitis, mean that, season after season, the backbone infrastructure of farms must be kept in good shape, no matter what mother nature or global commerce throw at us. A good example is the robust new systems used to treat dairy effluent — systems which turn what was once an odious problem into a potential source of fertiliser and nutrients. In this arena, farmers have been able to work innovatively within the framework of environmental protective laws to find a sustainable way forward. With the trend toward global free trade pushing further regulation and more exacting measures to ensure milk and meat quality, keeping these vital infrastructural systems at peak efficiency would seem a wise choice, this season as in any other.

DAIRY COMPLIANCE ADVERTORIAL
Sustainable thinking required Sustainable thinking on dairy farms is beneficial for everyone. It ensures you are constantly driving towards your long-term purpose, looking after your people, protecting the planet and maximising/ safeguarding your profit streams. Nowhere is sustainable thinking more pertienent currently, than in setting up you farm dairy effluent system. With such high stakes: non-compliance issues, the substantiality of the investment, the potential cost of something going wrong and the financial returns that can potentially be realised from this naturally-derived, nutrientrich waste, the decision must be weighed up carefully. Short-term, cost driven thinking can lead to decisions being made today that will have serious environmental and financial consequences tomorrow, warns Oliver Prestidge of Presco Group’s Environmental Infrastructure division. He has noticed a larger number of farmers this year who want to ‘do it once and do it right’ when it comes to Farm Dairy Effluent management. “The big increase in the number of Presco Group’s durable concrete Prosumps being installed this season can be put down to one thing,” says Oliver. “Peace of mind.” “After researching all the options, farmers often tell us that there is nothing else that compares with the Prosump’s high strength, reinforced concrete construction.”

Economy Starts in The Soil by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
In these fluctuating times of moderate to poor returns we find ourselves in zones of either going backwards, locked to the spot or unable to go forward with future plans to help stimulate income. What is going on out there? The politicians and the bureaucrats, living off the taxpayers have recently been able to increase their income while the producers of our country struggle to keep their business going forward. If we look back at those good years, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s life was different, people were happy, payouts were good and money was circulating. Agriculture and horticulture were pumping, but
since the financial collapse in 1987 producers have struggled to gain parity in the market. I was a victim of that collapse, having to borrow money from the merchant bankers to keep my commercial cropping business going, while paying 27% interest to the bankers. I believe that since then producers have had to work long and hard to extract any money out of the system. As a producer

at that time, I had already shifted from a conventional chemical system to a natural system of production which helped me produce better crops for a better return, which helped to pay off the merchant banks loan; Man, that felt good! Today, for producers, nothing has really changed. To make money you need to do the hard yards and for those producers on the “chemical treadmill” they need to work harder to keep up with the treadmill. Late last year the Australian Grain Board made a statement that they were moving away from the chemical age to help lift dropping production and reduce toxic chemical input to meet today’s consumer demand for safe certified nutritionally dense food for better health and less hospitalisation. It appears to me that the more we continue down the chemical path, the more production suffers, resulting in leaner payouts. For producers to increase income we need to move away from chemicals; their use-by-date has long expired, and look to the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, while naturally achieving the regional councils call for sustainable farming and a sustainable environment. To achieve this is very simple — all you need to do is drop agro-chemical
production and hook into all the benefits nature provides. Agrissentials can take you half way there with our multimineral, microbial rich fertilisers, with Mother Nature providing the other 50 percent requirement of rain and sunshine, resulting in better quality production and better returns. While we stay with chemical production and commodity markets we will always be struggling for income. Out of all the countries in the world New Zealand is the most ideally positioned to move to safe, certified nutritionally dense food production. Our isolation, our soils, our sunshine, our potential for water storage, our natural fertilisers and most importantly our enterprising producers, give us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet and we can easily achieve this goal within 5 years. A year to plan it, 3 years to nationally certify it and an extra year to perfect it — together we can do it. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Ben Tippins (North Manawatu) 021 738 601 or Lyn Woodcock (South Manawatu/ Wairarapa) 021 0204 3028 to find out how Agrissentials’ system will improve farm soil, farm health, environmental health and increase food quality.
