Pre-Covid-19 research, undertaken by the Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA), provides a crucial baseline for the agency and the region to work from through the recovery process. In late 2019, further research was commissioned by CEDA in addition to extensive studies undertaken four years ago. The investigation took an indepth look into Palmerston North and the Manawatu’s competitive advantage and opportunities for economic growth, identifying barriers and how to overcome those. The latest research provides a pulse of the local economy pre-Covid-19. “It is positive that businesses declared increased confidence in growth prospects for both their own enterprise and the wider Manawatu region, particularly heading into, dare I say it, unprecedented times, said CEDA chief executive officer Linda Stewart. “The research reinforces that our region is inherently optimistic and has a diverse and resilient economy; characteristics which bode well for what lies ahead in terms of the economic recovery. “The sectors that respondents identified as having the most potential for economic growth include construction, transport and logistics, education and training, scientific research and innovation, and agriculture, reinforcing CEDA’s strategic focus areas on the region’s sectors of strength, and the investment opportunities that come with this. “Manawatu’s exceptional location and logistics advantages, combined with a strong agrifood sector and deep innovation network, really set our region apart, while the diversity of our economy helps position us well for a strong recovery. Ms Stewart said it is important to note the increase of eight per cent in the main barrier to growth and finding skilled or specialist staff is a priority focus area for CEDA. “While this is not a challenge that is unique to Manawatu, it does reinforce the importance of the work and strategic focus we have on the talent ecosystem. This includes the development of

CEDA chief executive officer Linda Stewart said the research reinforces that the Manawatu is optimistic and has a diverse and resilient economy

a Manawatu Talent Attraction and Retention Strategy, and the appointment of Sara Towers to the talent and skills manager role. An increase of 6% to 32% of businesses declared that finding unskilled or semi-skilled staff was also a barrier to growth. Work underway with the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Skills Leadership Group, combined with the Skills Hub development and recent government announcement on the apprenticeship initiative, all signify the region’s commitment to overcoming this barrier. CEDA is working closely with regional economic programme Acelerate25 and will also be developing a Manawatu Business Retention Strategy. It will focus on methods for business expansions, and investments from businesses within the region, to be supported in the recovery phase.

The regional council sector welcomes the central government’s announcement of $162 million towards environmental enhancement projects throughout the country. The Manawatu-Whanganui region will receive a share of this funding with more than $18.4 million allocated towards three projects. Horizons Regional Council chair Rachel Keedwell says the local share builds on work already underway and accelerates additional projects, including further riparian planting and stream fencing across the region to improve freshwater, remediation to fish passages to enhance indigenous fish populations, and a Lake Horowhenua wetlands project to improve the lake’s water quality. “These projects total over $27 million. Central government’s investment of $18.4 million goes a long way towards progressing these programmes and will create 185 new jobs over the life of the projects. “They will also help progress the objectives of national freshwater management regulatory reforms and provide an opportunity to strengthen our partnerships with iwi, landowners and community groups.” Cr Keedwell said Horizons has a current riparian planting and stream fencing programme, targeting the delivery of almost 80 kilometres of fencing and more than 63,000 riparian plants a year. “In recent years, we have been unable to meet demand for fencing and

planting on farms. Central government’s investment of $4.6 million towards our $11.3 million programme will allow for more funding and staff resources to scale up. Up to 125 new jobs are expected to be created with this project during the next five years. Horizons’ remediation of native fish migration passage barriers is another region-wide programme to receive funding. It will build on the existing programme with an investment of $2.5 million to assist with delivering the $3.2 million programme. The project has the potential to create 15 new jobs. The third project to receive central government funding is the construction of a wetland complex and other catchment water quality interventions at Lake Horowhenua. “The $11.2 million will go towards the five-year, $12.5 million project, targeted to reduce nitrogen concentrations in Lake Horowhenua and the Arawhata Stream,” said Cr Keedwell. “The wetland idea has been developed over time by an alliance involving Horizons and Horowhenua District Council, horticulture growers, iwi and environmental groups, with 45 new jobs expected as a result of the project. “These non-regulatory projects are a part of the overall programme to improve water quality throughout the region. MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

CORPORATE CAREER IN DAIRY INDUSTRY BY DENISE GUNN Growing up on a sheep and beef hill country farm in Apiti fostered Heidi Sixtus’s appreciation for the agricultural industry.

I

nitially, Heidi was unsure which career path to follow when she finished secondary school. However, the bright lights of Auckland beckoned and she ended up moving to the big city. Following nine years working in the insurance and financial management field, Heidi returned to the Manawatu. She took up employment with Meat and Wool NZ, followed by a stint as the lower North Island regional coordinator for FarmSafe. Heidi started with the Hopkins Farming Group Limited in 2018 and is now the chief operating officer.

John and Elaine Hopkins founded the Hopkins Farming Group in 1983. The group has since grown to include 10 dairy farms stretching across the Manawatu from Apiti to Opiki, and three support farms in Bulls, Onga Onga and the Kawhatau Valley. A team of up to 80 employees work across the farms with a total of 8,000 cows milked. Heidi is part of the management team, which includes a board of directors and independent advisers. Several shareholders also have vested interests in the group.

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

Recently Heidi was appointed to join the Dairy Women’s Network team as a regional leader

She will work with the two other leaders and lower North Island hub leader Angela Strawbridge. Heidi’s responsibilities will include facilitating and coordinating events as well as being a point of contact. Along with her commitment to the Dairy Women’s Network, Heidi plans to complete her current studies and continue professional development. “I plan to stay in the industry in a senior management role, involving strategic management and board governance,” she said. “It’s an awesome industry to be involved in.”

side of dairy farming,” she said. “I’ve met some amazing, hard-working people and networking in this industry.” Becoming involved with the Dairy Women’s Network offers Heidi the opportunity to give back to the agricultural industry. It also increases her network of people. “It’s a good industry organisation — not just for women,” said Heidi. “Dairy Women’s Network does amazing things for the industry. Their workshops and seminars are adding value to people on-farm and in the industry.” Heidi was recently appointed to join the Dairy Women’s Network team as one of three regional leaders for the Rangitikei and Manawatu districts.

Hopkins Farming Group Limited is also the sole New Zealand importer of Strautmann machinery from Germany. Although her career field wasn’t a predetermined area, Heidi always enjoyed farm life along with the variety that the agri-business industry offers. “I ended up in the industry, I guess, by being in the right place at the right time, with the right skills.” Heidi has also been a dairy farm shareholder/director for a few years. In her current chief operating officer position, Heidi’s role encompasses people management, business operations, overseeing the administration team, strategy, health and safety, facilitation and reporting to the board. She said meeting people, being able to get out on the farms, as well as working in the office, are all rewarding aspects of her position. “The agriculture industry has a lot to offer, and professional development within the industry is amazing.” Heidi has always continued to study throughout her career. She is currently studying towards a Diploma in AgriBusiness through Primary ITO and training with the New Zealand Institute of Directors. Last year Heidi graduated from a Next Level programme through the AgriWomen’s Development Trust. Twentysix women from a range of farming and corporate backgrounds completed the course, covering leadership and governance. “People soon learn your skills and ability, and I guess it’s a bit different not milking and managing the business

“I have sat in with the Topp Twins and played with them at the rugby world cup and festivals. I have had a lot of impromptu concerts, but I am known more as a horse trainer here,” says Teresa. “I am a problem solver and help people with their horses, or horses who

are having problems with their people — which is often the case. “It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork and communication, which is not natural to people. Once they learn how to communicate through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. “When you learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. I show how to change the demeanour quickly and teach the horse to yield their feet to the person. It is a spatial thing, like a flight zone, a bubble of air — it is not natural to people, and

often a person doesn’t understand that a horse is trying to check that out with them. “The horse may step on their foot to move the person, and the person gets grumpy. The horse gets confused and then doesn’t know who should move first. It is communication, and the animal needs to feel safe and secure, and that scales up in the riding as well. “I teach about feeding horses properly because I had to learn how to feed my horse here. In the States, it is a more natural environment. Horses can get illnesses like laminitis, gut issues, and spores because they are not ruminants.

You need to figure out ways to feed them like creating track systems where there is not much fodder. Let them out to graze for short periods and don’t let them have the richer grasses. “When you start feeling like you are having issues then it is good to call me. Large animals can be frightening — it’s not like a dog jumping up on you. They are big, powerful and complex creatures. “Some are ridden often, so they are more broke than others. Owners may be busy working and lucky to get six hours a week to ride, leaving the horses in the paddock. They want to get out and work

so you have to hook it to be mentally with you, then they are your friend and will come to you at the gate. There are a lot of simple but complex things, and we have developed techniques that have mimicked a horse’s behaviour. “I love working out solutions for people and their horses and teach them how to read their horse. I have a lot of tips on halter breaking a youngster and have passed the torch of starting horses to a younger woman, Taryn Kyd of Vaquero Views. We have worked together for nine years, and in Auckland, I work in her large facility. In Hawke’s

Bay, I offer a variety of services and can help start a horse and work with started horses. “I have many stories of people not understanding their horse and becoming exceptional when guided in the right direction. I work with anyone who is keen to know more — they don’t need to be into competing or have a fancy animal. I am happy to deal with a donkey. It is not about competition with me, it is about individual relationships with horses, and all that requires is a desire — happy horse, happy person. “I believe you never retire — you work and retire at the same time. Part of the reason I left the music business is horses are my first passion and something I can do as I get older. It keeps me young and happy, and I love helping. It gives you purpose as animals are so important to their owners. When people worry about their animal, they get stressed. MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

ROLE HELPS

achieve goals BY DENISE GUNN

DairyNZ consulting officer Charlotte Grayling always knew she wanted an agricultural career, working with people to help them achieve their goals.

C

harlotte took on this role earlier this year after several years working as a rural bank manager for ASB. “I thought it was the perfect opportunity to combine my financial knowledge and banking experience, as well as broaden my practical farm knowledge to hopefully help more people with their businesses,” said Charlotte. “The thing I love most about this role is every day is different, and every farm is different, so there is plenty of opportunity to learn and develop.”

Charlotte’s parents, Matthew and Susan, are second-generation dairy farmers on a 246ha property in Okato. The home farm is one large unit but runs as two farms together through two sheds. Matthew works full-time on the farm, along with two other full-time staff members and relief milkers, while Susan rears calves and relief milks. A couple of days each week, Susan also works as a nurse in New Plymouth. The farm, with a 205ha effective milking platform, milks close to 620 cows split into two herds — Friesian and Jersey.

The couple run a mixture of dairy and beef cattle, and lambs on their lease block “I have three siblings, so growing up, we were all involved in the farm, from milking to general jobs like spraying and feeding calves during the spring. We all went to boarding school, so it was limited to school holidays when we were a bit older.”

When Charlotte completed secondary school, she went to Massey University to work towards an agri-commerce degree. After a couple of days’ work experience with rural bankers, Charlotte decided that was the direction she wanted to head.

is also very dependent on what the market is doing, and we are conscious of keeping ourselves aware of what is happening outside of the farm gate to help us make informed decisions.” “We plan to purchase our own block of land in a few years and be involved in the industry in a professional capacity,” she said.

“The alternative was actually rural valuation, which I minored in, and also really enjoy.” On completing her degree, Charlotte enrolled in the ASB graduate programme and initially based in the Manawatu with the rural team. Within six months, she was transferred to Taranaki and stayed with ASB for close to five years. In January, she took up her DairyNZ consulting position, covering central Manawatu and Rangitikei. “DairyNZ is an industry-good body, representing all New Zealand dairy farmers. Its purpose is to improve profitability, sustainability and competitiveness of New Zealand dairy farming.” In her role, Charlotte shares industry information with farmers, as well as facilitating and providing support for best management practice on-farm. She said a large component of the role is running the discussion group process, and facilitating farmer-tofarmer learning. “However, there is also a part of the role where we work with individuals to solve problems or help connect farmers in order to help spread knowledge throughout the industry.” Charlotte and her fiancé Tom Grogan recently began leasing a 158ha block at Aokautere. The block previously belonged to her grandfather, Keith Bennett, who passed away last year. “We both really wanted to be farming but understood our own challenges we had getting into land ownership. Therefore, we saw leasing as a great opportunity to develop our own farm

Chopper rescue club by Ann van Engelen

Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot and sculpture artist Sue Dinkelacker has established a club for people who have used or been rescued by the emergency services helicopters. “The Haast Club is a way to signify the importance of the choppers missions and its patients. It is endorsed by the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, Northland Emergency Services Trust and the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust,” says Northland Rescue Helicopter general manager, Vanessa Furze. “Sue has worked in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services in New Zealand for more than seven years. She is currently a captain flying the Northland Emergency Services Trust’s Sikorsky S76C++ helicopters in Whangarei.” Sue, an artist and award-winning sculptor, created the eagle head sculptures for people that have used the emergency helicopter services as a memento that can also be used as a conversation piece. “The Haast Club membership is a way to commemorate a personal rescue. The purpose of the club is to offer a tangible ‘legacy-quality’ collectible to remind you of your experience, and create a talking point to share your story while raising funds for New Zealand Rescue Helicopter Trusts,” says Sue. “Many different types of helicopters have saved people over the last halfa-century. “A helicopter-shaped artwork would be recognised as a specific chopper, whereas an eagle symbolises them all. Inspired by the eagle that snatched Gandalf to safety in the Tolkien stories, the Haast Club artworks depict the

largest eagle ever to have existed in the world, the extinct New Zealand Haast’s eagle.” The club is designed for anyone, anywhere in New Zealand and across the world. Northland resident and Far North District Councillor Kaikohe-Hokianga Ward, John Vujchich, was rescued by the emergency services helicopter in 2013 after his foot was chopped off in a farming accident on his family property in the Far North. Mr Vujchich was also the first person to join the exclusive club. “When I heard about the club I joined immediately. It is thanks to their speed that got me to Whangarei Hospital and into surgery that I survived. It was technically impossible for me to survive with what actually happened because losing a foot like that you should bleed out within five minutes,” he says. “What has always stuck in my head was I could hear the rescue chopper coming in, and I could see it land. I have a new appreciation for the service and those on the team. When I see the chopper in the air, I wonder who is hurt, where are they from and how badly. I encourage anyone who has been rescued by chopper or their family to join The Haast Club and support The Northland Emergency Services Trust.” Follow the crew on the Northland Rescue Helicopter Facebook page. For more information, and to join the club go to Haastclub.com.

ADVERTORIAL

An essential to make energy by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we usually make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good-quality CoQ10. Part one CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. It can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation. Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately,

this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50 per cent. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well-researched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: July

Port Taranaki’s Environmental Upgrade this now puts Port Taranaki in a great position ahead of environmental regulatory changes, particularly as it is the only port in the lower North Island to have a debarker on-site.

The installation of a debarker machine at Port Taranaki ensures the company’s export log operations are more efficient and ready to meet future changes to environmental standards. In a partnership between Port Taranaki and China Forestry Group New Zealand, a log debarker has started operation at Port Taranaki and will strip between 1200 and 1600 JAS (tonnes) of logs per day, meaning these will meet MAF export requirements for logs with no chemicals used. Port Taranaki is the first port in the lower North Island to commission an on-site debarker, and its operation means full log vessels – both below deck and above deck – can now be

It is also more efficient for exporters as they can contemplate fewer multiport visits, saving time and fuel, which is better for the environment. loaded at Port Taranaki and leave directly for international markets. As part of import requirements in many markets, logs leaving New Zealand must be treated to control insect pests. This is most often done through fumigation, with the use of methyl bromide gas. An alternative is to debark the logs, which removes the bark and insects,

Logs are coming from deeper in the hinterland – north from Te Kuiti and towards Rotorua, and south of Taranaki, into Whanganui and further afield where before they may have gone to another port. China Forestry Southern North Island Regional Manager Scott Gordon said the debarker project was a great example of regional collaboration.

10 Forestry Myths Busted 1. Myth – Pines ruin the land – they take a lot of moisture and nutrients out of the soil.

4. Myth – Repeated rotations of forestry depletes the soil of nutrients.

Soils in planted forests are in better shape than soils supporting any other primary industry. Over 50% of land planted in forests assessed between 2009 and 2013 met the soil health measures for fertility, organic reserves, pH and physical status. Only 13% of dairy sites and 18% of drystock sites met all criteria. In both cases, soil compaction wa s a major problem.

There is no decline in nutrients if the forest floor is left behind after a 30-year rotation along with a third of small branches. Trees draw nearly all their nutrients from the atmosphere in a process called photosynthesis. As long as there is not significant topsoil disturbance at harvest and slash is left to protect the soils from heavy rain and water movement, there is no change in nutrients. And in some cases, the nutrients have increased.

2. Myth – Pine planted on large scale destroys the quality of the land it is growing in. Radiata pine can improve soil quality. Stimulated root activity can lower water tables by recharging bedrock with and aquifers with water, improving the physical condition of clay soils. Radiata pine on coastal dunes has been known to accelerate the development of topsoil. 3. Myth – Pine forests lower the PH of the soil and make it acidic. All forest soils tend to be acidic, and as New Zealand was almost entirely covered in forests for 40 million years most of our soils are naturally acidic, even after the forests were cut down. Grass prefers a neutral to alkali PH which means farms are often top-dressed with lime and fertilizer to increase the PH. Pasture that is allowed to regenerate into native forest, or is converted into a plantation, naturally reverts to an acidic state.

5. Myth – Pine trees suck the water out of the ground and deplete streams. Trees hold the soils together, slow landslides, decrease erosion and drain and improve clay soils. Forests may be better at recharging bedrock than pasture. Forest root growth can increase recharge to aquifers, and dry season water flows compared with cropping. Trees will reduce shallow slips and local flash floods but are not likely to reduce major scale flooding or landslides associated with major weather events. Trees also improve air humidity with a process called transpiration which means clouds of moisture and rainfall increases in areas of large forests. 6. Myth – Pines are bad for water quality. The quality of water in mature planted forests is high, similar to

native forests. Both forest types reduce sediment and nutrient loss compared to scrubland or pasture. Afforestation of farmland has seen significant improvements in a wide range of water quality attributes. Shade in mature forests keeps water cool, providing habitat for water life. Water quality can suffer for the short time at harvesting, especially with clearcutting up to a water’s edge. Riparian buffers and moderate qualities of slash left to filter runoff reduces negative impacts. 7. Myth – There’s no biodiversity in pine forests. The surprising level of indigenous species living among radiata pine is due in part to planted forests functioning as a haven for some species in highly modified landscapes where often these are the only forest habitat. These forests can become parts of corridors that facilitate species movement between otherwise isolated native forest patches. Forest certification systems like FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certify that plantation forests meet verified standards of management including maintaining, conserving and enhancing biodiversity. Forest activities are scheduled around kiwi and karearea breeding seasons, fish spawning, and maintain riparian buffers during logging for example. Biodiversity levels in planted forests are higher than those on in pasture, agricultural and horticultural land but lower than indigenous forests. Birdlife was found to be the same, and in some cases, higher in plantation forests. Forests are not all

harvested at the same time, and this biodiversity moves around. 8. Myth – Pine trees fall if left to grow over age 30. There are many old-growth stands of pine trees all over New Zealand. The oldest Radiata Pine is at Mt Peel station in South Canterbury, it is 161 years old. In their natural habitat of California, they can live up to 500 years. Our sawmills are not equipped to saw logs that have got too big, so in New Zealand, we do not let our pine trees grow to this age. (They are just too damned profitable.) But with some carbon farms now planning on leaving pines to mature, we will see how these giants will develop. They are short-lived compared native forests, but if left in a forest will slowly fall over time allowing natives to flourish in the light wells. So far Carbon Farms account for 4.8% of new pine plantings in the year to 2019. (Dana Consulting 2020) 9. Myth – forestry employees fewer people per ha than farming. In fact, in almost all cases forestry employees more people. This is not the case in “carbon farming” but we have very little of these examples in New Zealand so far to compare and only 4.8% of new plantings are considered Carbon Farming. Studies and statistics produced by New Zealand Forest Owners Association put forestry figures way ahead of farming, and this is not counting downstream processing. These are hard comparisons, as agricultural jobs tend to be constant over time

The Southern North Island Wood Council provides a collective voice for the forestry sector in Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Tararua and Wellington. Members have a common interest in ensuring the long-term success of the sector. Membership is open to any company or individual with an interest in the local wood industry. Erica Kinder, SNI Wood Council CEO, can be contacted for more information. sniwoodcouncil@gmail.com

0273 290 498

sniwoodcouncil.co.nz/

and as there is more agriculture in New Zealand than forestry, economies of scale and movement apply to their staff. As one industry increases in scale, the jobs become more permanent, people move less for work, and new communities spring up around this industry. 10. Myth – Wood on our beaches all comes from plantation forests. In areas of New Zealand with retained mature native bush, like the West Coast of the South Island, there are high levels of driftwood on the beaches. This is due to the natural attrition of branches and trees from forests washing down rivers, especially in storms. This provides much needed habit for birds and beach dwelling insects. In highly modified areas of New Zealand where there are typically few trees, people have got used to seeing clean beaches. Often driftwood is carried for many kilometers by the sea and riparian plantings and riverbank species such as poplar and willow contribute to wood coming down rivers. Slash and logs in waterways are seen as a normal part of a natural woodland environment and often this is what stops sediment eroding. References “Forestry Myths Busted” M Harnett, Tree Grower, 2019. Queen Street upgrades improve safety Major safety improvements to Queen Street are underway. The rebuild of the Queen Street/ Cambridge Street roundabout was completed by the Horowhenua District Council recently. Now, work has begun on improvements to the section between Oxford and Salisbury Streets, and a roundabout at the Queen Street/Tiro Tiro Road intersection. These two projects will employ up to 20 full-time equivalent employees from the Horowhenua and was made possible thanks to $1.65m from the Provincial Growth Fund. Later this month, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will reveal its plans for a roundabout at the Queen Street/SH 57 intersection. This intersection is rated as one of the top 100 most dangerous intersections in New Zealand. Group manager infrastructure development Brent Maguire said the projects reflect council’s push to keeping people safe on the roads and footpaths and making it easier for people to move around our district. “The two projects will vastly improve motorist, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and help improve the town’s eastwest connection.” Mr Maguire said council is taking the opportunity to upgrade water and wastewater pipes under the intersections at the same time. Roading services manager James Wallace said the Oxford to Salisbury section includes cycle lanes and safer places for pedestrians to cross the road in the heart of Levin. “We realise the projects may cause frustration at times for motorists and local businesses.

Resource consent granted for wastewater discharge A 25-year resource consent has been granted for Levin’s treated wastewater discharge. Levin’s treated wastewater is discharged to a 100ha pine and native forest plantation, locally known as The Pot, within the Waiwiri Catchment. It is considered to be one of New Zealand’s original and most unique treated wastewater discharges. The newly granted consent is the culmination of two years of extensive investigations examining the environmental effects of this land discharge. A hearing on the application commenced in October last year and the final decision to grant the consent was issued in June this year. Horowhenua mayor Bernie Wanden said the decision provides certainty for the community and comes after extensive engagement with landowners, Ngati Raukawa, Muaupoko, and the community for the last six years. “It is pleasing to see council’s commitment to partnership with iwi being recognised in the resource consent decision. Acknowledgement should also be given to the partnering landowners, Muaupoko Land Trust, who have worked constructively with the council.” Horowhenua District Council chief executive David Clapperton said the consent process is part of a larger programme looking at the current and future management of Levin’s wastewater. “The consent comes with conditions, including a requirement for ongoing improvements for the Waiwiri Stream. This has given rise to research

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

A good calf electrolyte Have you ever looked at an electrolyte container and tried to figure out if it contains the necessary ingredients to treat scouring calves — or do you just pick the cheapest option? Sometimes picking the cheapest option is not the best and can make things worse, says ex-dairy farmer Tony Waugh of Biocalf Animal Health Products Ltd. “It can be quite confusing comparing products as each manufacturer lists ingredients differently on their labels and unless you understand what should be included, and at what concentrations — you’re left in the dark as to the product’s effectiveness.” Tony says to treat scours effectively an electrolyte should include an energy source, usually glucose; minerals sodium, chloride, potassium lost in the faeces. Glycine to assist with sodium and water absorption. Bicarbonate/acetate to correct acidosis. “The standard information on product labels lists ingredients used to make the product — for example, sodium chloride (salt), sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, potassium chloride. “There is, however, one slight problem. Several ingredients, such as sodium chloride, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride, don’t exist in the electrolyte solution that the calf drinks. Once these substances

contact water, they dissociate into their base components.” To compare products effectively, farmers and calf-rearers need to calculate the actual numbers of molecules of the different ingredients that make up each electrolyte product expressed as mmol/L and collectively known as osmolality. “Simply put, this is a measure of the concentration of a substance, such as sodium, chloride or glucose that is dissolved in a solution. When choosing an electrolyte look for a list of each substance expressed as mmol/L, mOsm/L or mml/L with the total

osmolality between 400–600mmol/L.” In a study of 10 commonly available electrolytes only three ticked all the boxes when compared on a mmol/L basis. To see a comparison table and accompanying information, visit: biocalfelectrolytes.nz/rearinginformation#Understanding.

HOUSE MOVERS

by Andy Bryenton

The daffodil is the symbol for one of our nation’s most well known charitable fundraisers, the annual drive for the Cancer Society of New Zealand. To carry on their good work in Kiwi communities, looking after the families of people battling cancer and the wellbeing of patients themselves, this hard-working not-for-profit organisation hits the streets to raise money and awareness. Why the daffodil, though? How has this yellow bloom come to signify the push for research into one of the modern world’s most pervasive illnesses, and why was it chosen to represent Friday, August 28, Daffodil Day? The cheerful yellow bloom of the daffodil comes out at the turning of the seasons, as winter’s cold and rain turn to spring. Thus, several cultures held the flower sacred in ancient times, from the Egyptians to the Hebrews and, of course, the Greeks, who associated the flower with the demigod Narcissus. In their legends, the yellow daffodils grew on the earthly side of the river Styx, beyond which lay the afterlife. Daffodils were significant as a flower associated with returning from illness or injury, therefore; it’s said they reminded spirits of the joys of the living world and made them turn back, returning to their friends and family. In Wales, the daffodil is the symbol of the nation’s patron saint, St David, a real-life sixth-century holy man who founded peaceful monasteries during

a time of almost constant warfare, preserving literacy and knowledge of healing. The daffodil was also sacred to Eostre, the fertility Goddess of Rome from whom we take the name of the Easter holiday. In China, the daffodil is a symbol of hope and new life and is associated with the celebration of the new year. With all of these worldwide traditions supporting the impression of the daffodil as a flower of regeneration after winter, it’s no surprise that the Cancer Society chose it as an emblem for their

COUNTRY & CHARACTER

own works. Their mission is centred on fostering hope, both in individuals fighting cancer and in society as a whole that a cure can be found through science and research. When you see the collectors out there this year with their bright yellow flowers, think of all the people through history who have also waited for the daffodil to herald the coming of spring. Year after year, the flowers never let them down; just as the Cancer Society continues to honour its pledge and support those in our communities fighting this illness today.

Building little legends by Andy Bryenton

With winter well underway and motocross venues consigned to seasonal mud, it’s time to consider the new season ahead and what to ride when the barriers go down to launch another exciting year on the track. For many young riders, there’s an awkward gap phase between tackling the more forgiving angles and switchbacks of the junior track on the little 50cc machine and stepping up to go wheel to wheel with the big boys. It needn’t be awkward at all, however, as exciting bikes exist to make the transition through to full power and noise. Kawasaki’s small-displacement KX bikes have long been a favourite in this bracket. The announcement of new technology and styling for the 2021 range has come at just the right time for up-and-coming riders to ask for one under the Christmas tree. The KX65 is a perfect stepping stone for those looking for their second off-road bike after cutting their teeth in the 50cc grade. However, it’s the surprisingly powerful KX85 which catches the attention with the looks of a much bigger machine and a powerband that’s easy to keep on through all six gears, delivering a satisfying engine note along with a surge of classic two-stroke acceleration. Built with 40 years of Kawasaki Team Green motocross experience behind it,

this cracking little 84cc liquid-cooled two-stroke is simple in its design and comes with the ability to adjust to a growing rider. It’ll go the distance, as it packs enough power to keep young racers developing their skills all through this phase of their riding career. There’s a small wheel and a big wheel option available, making this a great mid-range bike before it’s time to consider full-sized options higher up the horsepower range. That light weight also makes it nimble, easy to control, and capable of catching considerable air. Just take a look at footage of young riders putting the KX85 through its paces, and you’ll see just how much! Combine ample power with those big, high-grip tyres and 275mm of suspension travel front and rear, and you have a combination that’s proven itself in previous model years, on tracks around the world. If it’s time to move up for the 2021 season, now is the time to look at your options, and the little ‘big’ bike in neon green is a great place to start. Similar other models include Honda’s CRF110F and Yamaha’s YZF85.

Young riders who crave more power and versatility would love to find a 2021 model-year Kawasaki under the Christmas tree
