Two teams of three from the rural Rangitikei school qualified for this year’s contest during the Manawatū/Taranaki regional finals back in January. The Tractor Trio team with George Cunliffe, Jordyn Taylor and Felicity AndersonOlney placed third in the recent grand final held in Christchurch. The school’s other team, Klassic Kiwis, which included Alex Jamieson, Fono Bason and Jonty Skerman, placed sixth. In the lead-up to the national competition, the pupils were involved in preparation, raising funds and seeking sponsorship. “There have been weekly sessions with both school-based learning, along with practical sessions at local businesses either sponsoring the event or specialist industry,” said school principal Greg Allan. “We have also had wonderful support from some of our rural families being hosts to on-farm sessions as well.” Agrikids teams took on a range of physical and mental challenges during the contest. “Throughout the day, there were three parts to the finals with a raceoff consisting of physical and mental challenges,” said Mr Allan. These included finding needles in haystacks, constructing 3D puzzles, working with go-karts and teamwork challenges. “The second part was modules based around key sponsors like naming special parts to a Honda quad bike, soil structure, animal breeds, identifying farm hazards and knowing about a range of fuels.” Mr Allan said watching the team work together utilising each other’s strengths, working together in the months of preparation before the event, and working through challenges was a huge highlight. “We focussed on not trying to race others and had a focus on doing our tasks as well as we could. Being accurate was just as important as being fast.”

The Klassic Kiwis team of Alex Jamieson, Jonty Skerman and Fono Bason, from South Makirikiri School at the national Agrikids final

Although both teams competed against each other, members also supported one another with the learning before the contest. “The success is not only in the final event but in the way these students conduct themselves throughout the preparation. Working on skills on interacting with adults, asking questions, introducing themselves to the judges and most importantly, offering to help clean up afterwards.” Agrikids was held in conjunction with the FMG New Zealand Young Farmer competition. Jake Jarman, representing the Taranaki/Manawatu region, was crowned the FMG Young Farmer of the Year 2021.

Evolving dairy industry sparks programme change by Denise Gunn

As the nation’s dairy industry continues to evolve, the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards has recognised this with changes to its programme.

The 2021 national dairy trainee finalists after their final day of judging

Six dairy trainee finalists from each region will be produced from the preliminary round of practical judging. These finalists will then progress to a faceto-face interview round, which will also include a large verbal, practical element to assess general farming knowledge. “This is invaluable experience for the trainees and develops their communication and interview skills,” said Mrs Hills. Regional winners will continue to the national programme, which includes a study tour, practical testing and the national awards dinner. “There is a real buzz about the changes,” said Mrs Hills. “We feel they will reinvigorate an already fun experience, and our regional teams and judges are excited to get the 2022 programme underway.” Registrations of interest for the 2022 NZDIA can be made via dairyindustryawards.co.nz. Entries open Friday, October 1 2021.

Modifications to the age range in the dairy trainee category acknowledge that traditional pathways into the dairy industry have altered. The age range for this category is now 18–30 years with a maximum of three years experience from the age of 18. The online entry form has been simplified too. “According to PrimaryITO, the average age of a dairy trainee is now 32 years, and we are seeing many career changers joining the ranks,” said NZDIA general manager Robin Congdon. Additional conditions for visa entrants have also been removed, with no minimum length of time in New Zealand now required. “These changes acknowledge the awards programme as a learning platform, which recognises trainees’ achievements, drives personal development, allows them to grow industry networks, and use the programme to develop skills along the way.” NZDIA executive dairy trainee member Raewyn Hills said there was a strong desire to enhance the judging to be more educational, fun and engaging. “We have revamped the process, and the preliminary round will have a skills day, with a practical focus which will appeal to all,” she said. “We will also give on-the-spot feedback and training on how to complete the practical tasks on the day, meaning entrants will come away having learnt something rather than just judged.” The new format would also allow more trainees to go through the programme in less time, resulting in less pressure on volunteer regional teams and judges.

TRAINING HORSES

beyondTHE BARRIERS by Denise Gunn Since establishing Beyond the Barriers NZ in 2014, Nicky Wallace and Gina Schick have promoted the versatility and suitability of retired thoroughbred racehorses, retrained for other equestrian disciplines.

T

he concept for the non-profit organisation initially began through holding a showcase event at equine expo Equidays in 2015. “We knew the organiser of the event and signed up to hold a competition there every second year,” said Nicky. “The purpose was to showcase what thoroughbreds could achieve with less than 12 months schooling off the racetrack. “We knew these horses were capable of more than they were given credit for. We wanted to be able to demonstrate this to the equestrian public.” The pair’s involvement with horses and ponies began from a young age. Gina said her parents bought her first pony in an effort to get her head out of her books.

“With a strong background involvement in Pony Club, particularly in eventing, I began breaking in and trading horses. This was in addition to riding trackwork, which helped fund her university tuition. “During this time, I came across my first thoroughbred, Ruffy, also known as The Felon, who went on to be an exceptional eventer. “He can be held responsible for starting my interest in rehoming thoroughbreds off the track.” A few years and thousands of rehomed thoroughbreds later, Gina met and married Rodney Schick, whose family own Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge. “I am now involved in the thoroughbred industry as a breeder and owner. I also continue to rehome hundreds of

horses each year through my business, EventStars Limited, in Cambridge.” Nicky’s first pony arrived after many years of pleading for one. “I was also involved in the Pony Club during my school years. While studying agribusiness and equine at Massey University, part of the degree’s requirement was working in an agricultural-based business during summer holidays. “Through a family connection, I found myself completing yearling preparation for the Williams family operation, Little Avondale Stud, in Masterton. I became a regular fixture at the farm whenever university holidays allowed and worked at yearling sales both in New Zealand and Australia, as well as England.” Nicky co-founded one of New Zealand’s most successful bloodstock agencies, Waterford Bloodstock. “I bred and owned thoroughbreds in New Zealand and Australia too. With the aim of ensuring suitable homes for every sound thoroughbred retiring from New Zealand’s racing industry, Gina and I have found Equidays to be a perfect promotional platform. Dunstan Horsefeeds jumped

onboard as competition sponsors, and 14 riders were invited to compete. The competition, restricted to retired thoroughbred racehorses with less than 12 months schooling prior to the competition, was held as a freestyle format during Equidays.” There was a range of performances; beautifully prepared show horses, wellschooled eventing horses, western and tricks, which involved balloons and fire. “It was such a hit with the organisers that they immediately asked us to come back again the following year, and we agreed,” said Gina. “The Dunstan Ex-Factor competition has since attracted competitors from all over New Zealand. Sacha Rennie is a regular competitor, travelling from Manawatū to the event. “Rangitikei veterinarian Julie Bell competed on her gelding Technician last year, picking up several places. This horse had raced in Hong Kong as well as New Zealand. In 2016, Manawatū horse trainer Laura Knight travelled to the competition to compete on her retired steeplechaser Wotabuzz. time of the competition. This combination really helped us to dispel the myth that younger, unraced thoroughbreds make better sport horses.” All the work put into Beyond the Barriers is voluntary, with Gina and Nicky taking care of the majority of planning and organising. A core team of volunteers, Miranda Horton, Josie Ireland-Keir, Tara Hughes, Kelsey Leahy and Jonty Schick, help implement their plans. “The key event in our calendar every year is the Dunstan Ex-Factor competition, and we complete various clinics and do a lot of promotion through social media outside of this,” said Nicky. In recent years, the pair worked with NZ Racing to ensure reporting systems used are effective, providing the industry with accurate data surrounding the rehoming of thoroughbreds in New Zealand. “We look forward to seeing the results of the improvements in traceability in the near future.” To ensure the longevity of the organisation, Beyond the Barriers needs to secure further funding to reduce reliance on volunteers.

ACHIEVING GOALS

IN DAIRYING BY DENISE GUNN IN THE PAST SEASON, MANAWATŪ DAIRY INDUSTRY AWARDS SHARE FARMER OF THE YEAR, SAM HOWARD, AND HIS WIFE ELLIE HAVE ACHIEVED RECORD MILK PRODUCTION WITH THEIR HERD.

T

he couple moved to John Gardner’s 240-cow, 80ha property near Shannon in June 2017, buying the bulk of their herd soon afterwards. Sam said the opportunity to buy their first herd when they moved to the Shannon farm is one of their career highlights. “We take great pride in the care we put into our animals and the improvements we can make to the natural environment around us, while at the same time building wealth towards achieving our financial goals.” Growing up rurally, on opposite sides of the Tasman, neither Sam nor Ellie initially considered a dairy farming career. Sam grew up on his family’s sheep and beef farms near Whanganui and Feilding. He graduated from Massey University with a Master of Applied Economics and went on to work as an economist for DairyNZ.

Two years later, Sam decided to move to an on-farm dairying position. He spent the next 10 months as assistant manager on a 650-cow farm in southwest Victoria, Australia. Horses were a significant feature in Ellie’s life on her family’s small hobby farm north of Melbourne. This passion for horses led her to study veterinary science, with a particular interest in horses. In 2015, Sam moved back to New Zealand to work as production manager on a 315-cow farm near Stratford. The couple then took on a lower order sharemilking position with 330 cows at Tariki. Sam’s work achievements were recognised in 2016, winning the Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year award. “The reason for our shift to dairy farming, and what we enjoy most about farming, are the opportunities that it provides for an enjoyable lifestyle for our

family, working with the land and with our animals,” said Sam. In addition to looking after the farm’s animal health and welfare plans, Ellie works as an equine vet for Totally Vets in Palmerston North. The couple’s first child, Archie, was born earlier this year. Sam has continued to study, completing an Intermediate/Advanced Sustainable Nutrient Management course at Massey University. He has also gained the PrimaryITO Dairy Production Management Level 5. The couple’s Friesian/Jersey crossbred herd, which is 240 cows at peak, achieved record production this past season, with 106,200kgMS, equating to 443kgMS/ cow and 1,328kgMS/ha. Production in the 2019/20 season reached 100,500kgMS. Their herd has also attained somatic cell count (SCC) results in the top 70 suppliers in Fonterra for two seasons in a row. “We had nine R1 heifers that we were able to raise at our lower order sharemilking job, and the rest of our herd were purchased when we took on our 5050 position. “Ninety animals were purchased as a complete herd from a farm that was exiting dairy, which had strong index figures and low SCC, and a long history of artificial breeding. Other smaller lines of cows were purchased, along with two lines of R2 heifers to make our numbers up,” said Sam. The couple’s previous two farm shifts were followed by challenging wet winter and spring periods. Sam said this makes the first few months learning about a new farm pretty tough.

Sam introduces a young puppy to the herd

“The main climatic difficulty is winter rain. Our heavy soils mean that we need to work hard to avoid pasture damage during wet weather events. “We are quite close to the Tararua Ranges here, so summer rainfall can be a bit more reliable than in other parts of the Manawatū. The total yearly average is 970mm according to NIWA.” Baleage cut from the milking area is typically around 200 bales during spring. Summer forage crops, chicory and turnips are also grown. Sam’s parents, Lindsay and Kerry, lend a hand during calving. “This can be a challenging time onfarm with no permanent employees and

with Ellie working full-time off-farm.” The couple’s plan to continue building their assets, and reduce debt, will place them in a position to take on new opportunities as they arise. Sam and Ellie also want to continue herd improvement strategies and operate the farm efficiently with a low environmental footprint. Long-term, they are aiming for farm ownership, raising their family surrounded by the natural environment and animals. “To help us achieve this goal, we are evaluating growth options such as large-scale sharemilking and equity partnerships,” said Sam.

hampion target shooter Stephanie McNair has her sights set on aiming for the top of the sport. Earlier this year, the 17-year-old Palmerston North Girls’ High School (PNGHS) student was recognised at the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards, taking out two top awards. In addition to the Fonterra Young New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of the Year Award, Stephanie also won the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Supreme Award for her contribution to the rural sporting community. Stephanie first picked up a rifle when she was around eight years old, shooting on a rest (wooden block) at a local club in Dannevirke.

A few years later, as a year eight student, she began shooting in a jacket with a shoulder sling to support the rifle’s weight. At the start of 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, she tried air rifle shooting from a standing position. With her parents, Ruth and Robbie, keen rifle shooters, Stephanie has received plenty of coaching. “Both my parents were shooting before I was born,” said Stephanie. “So, I kind of grew up around rifle shooting. I would go with my parents to the regional competitions before I had even begun shooting. When I got old enough, I decided that I wanted to give it a go and have been shooting ever since. My dad has been my coach since I began

shooting at age eight or nine. He has very extensive knowledge of the sport. I would not be as good of a shooter as I am if I had not had his help and knowledge of the sport. “He is a left-handed shooter and I am as well, even though I am right-handed. So it works out well, as I can use his older rifles as left-handed shooting equipment is hard to get a hold of.”

Stephanie’s mother, Ruth, represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1994 and in Malaysia four years later. “My mum is also a lot of help when it comes to shooting as well and is always willing to help me out.” Stephanie’s sister, Caley, 15, also shoots, and her older brother, Lachie, 19, was involved in the sport before focussing

on his Massey University studies. “Caley and I are both shooters for the Palmerston North Girls’ High School rifle shooting team, which won at the secondary school nationals last year.” Stephanie is club captain of the Dannevirke Smallbore Rifle Club, which is run by her parents. During the smallbore rifle shooting season, which runs from March to September, Stephanie shoots at the club’s indoor range. She also shoots at an outdoor rifle club in Norsewood during the October to February season. “At home, my dad has set up an air rifle range of sorts, so I can practise without having to travel too far.”

The 17-year-old Palmerston North Girls’ High School student with some of her target shooting trophies

Throughout the year, Stephanie travels throughout New Zealand to compete most weekends in indoor and outdoor competitions. In February 2020, at the New Zealand Outdoor National Smallbore Shooting Championships, Stephanie broke the New Zealand junior and women’s record scores with 623.0. Her previous score of 617.3 was achieved at the nationals in Christchurch two years earlier. Stephanie’s top scores qualified her for the Open Slazenger/Wakefield New Zealand team. During the New Zealand Indoor National Smallbore Shooting Championships, held in Palmerston North, Stephanie shot her first 400 score.

“I also shot my first 100.10. This is the highest score you can shoot on a single ten shot match. “At this competition, I top-scored overall with a score of 400.30.” Stephanie’s flair for target shooting has seen her win, and be highly placed in, many competitions, which featured top New Zealand shooters. She has also had international wins against teams from several countries. “I hope to make more New Zealand teams at this year’s North v South indoor rifle shooting competition in August,” said Stephanie. She would also like to win the national secondary schools competition, with the

PNGHS rifle shooting team, for the second year in a row. Stephanie is planning to take a gap year in 2022 to focus on shooting. She is also considering applying to a university in the US with a competitive rifle shooting team to shoot against other universities. “They have sporting scholarships over there where I can study while being coached in rifle shooting,” she said. Long-term goals include following her mother’s footsteps, aiming for eventual qualification in Commonwealth and Olympic Games outdoor rifle shooting and air rifle. “Those would be two big goals that I would love to achieve.”

Here’s what the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) says about the levels of expertise and care a tradesperson should display when working on your project. You’re covered for these whether there’s a written contract or not. Remember, most of the time, you can spot ‘cowboys’ a mile away as they won’t be affiliated with the oversight body for their trade and might be cagey about sharing their qualifications. For example, they may not have a card identifying them as a proper plumber or a logo on their ute identifying them as a Licensed Building Practitioner if they’re not legitimate. The CGA says that no matter who you hire, you’re entitled to expect five things. The first is called reasonable skill. It means that the job must be at least as good as the work of a competent person

with average skills and experience for that type of work. That average is determined by the standards set down by each trade’s governing body or as defined in the apprenticeship course for learning the trade. The second is called reasonable care. It means that care and attention to details have been used. An otherwise technically competent job might not pass the ‘reasonable care’ test if it’s been finished off in a sloppy, unsightly or messy fashion. The third key part of the CGA says that a job must be fit for use — that it does what you need it to do. A plumber who installs a non-flushing toilet has not made it fit for use; neither has an electrician who installs an air conditioner that doesn’t heat or cool. The most important thing to note here is that

for all of these factors, there’s no defence of lack of competence. If a tradesperson warns you in advance that they can’t guarantee reasonable skill, reasonable care or fitness for use as they are ‘not very good’ at a particular kind of job, it’s best to not hire them. Real professionals know their stuff under the CGA. Fourth and fifth, even if there’s no quote or timeframe in place when the work starts, you’re entitled to have your job completed in a reasonable time and for a reasonable cost. Reasonable time is judged on the time it takes a competent person who works in that type of job to complete the task, while a reasonable cost is an average of what other similar tradespeople charge in your area.

Your vision, their expertise by Andy Bryenton

To obtain the best possible build or renovation outcome, you’ll need to end up with both a personalised aesthetic vision and a fully compliant home under Code Compliance Certificate rules. That means ensuring that every step of the process is in line with best practice in the building industry while not compromising your decor and design choices. A true professional will help you find a way to tackle problems and make your grand design live within the framework of what will last the test of time. A large part of this is ensuring that every professional who takes care of each individual job is the right one to hire. Sometimes a Licensed Building Practitioner can act as a project manager, bringing in trusted fellow tradespeople from their network of contacts. In other cases, the home or landowner may decide to supervise the hiring of different tradies for different tasks. Either way, communication is crucial. Be clear from the start, and use sketches, plans and visual art to ensure that you’re all on the same page. If the route you take is to manage things personally, it might be because you have some skill and ability on the tools yourself or know others who can ably assist with certain aspects of the build. The thing to know, if you’re going to take this approach, is that certain

building tasks are considered restricted, in that only a qualified and credentialcarrying professional is allowed to undertake them. That’s not to say that you can’t have what you’ve envisioned; just that input from experts can avoid putting form over function. The government takes this seriously following the leaky buildings crisis and the spate of unqualified pretenders who preyed on families in the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes. It’s an offence to knowingly hire someone to undertake a restricted building task when they aren’t qualified to do it, and the fine is $20,000. There’s an even heftier penalty for masquerading as a qualified tradesperson when you’re not. If you’re hiring people in to take care of work like flooring, foundations, roofing, damp-proofing, erecting load-bearing columns or bracing, putting up external walls, electrical, plumbing or gasfitting work or installing fire safety systems, it’s best to check their credentials thoroughly to ensure both a job well done, and the paperwork at the end of the day to fulfil those Code Compliance Certificate criteria. When in doubt, delegate it out. As

Voting open for Top Shop The recent launch of Top Shop in Horowhenua and Kāpiti gives a fresh look and new name to the former Customer Choice Awards. Organised by Business Kapiti and Horowhenua Inc, Top Shop runs as a separate campaign under the Electra Business & Innovation Awards. BKH is a non-profit body entirely run by volunteers. The Customer Choice Awards were placed on hold last year and relaunched as Top Shop after undergoing a few changes. BKH programme delivery manager Charlotte Tollervey said Top Shop is a great entry into the awards. “It’s really easy to register your business for the public vote. It provides local businesses with a great way to profile themselves within the local community and receive the kudos they deserve for delivering great customer experiences. “Businesses registered via an online platform, and all voting is done via a text-to-vote system rather than ballotstyle boxes. “We have created an entire marketing campaign around it, and we are fortunate to have Vodafone as the sponsor. They are fully invested in engaging and involving as

many local businesses as possible and the wider community.” Charlotte said this is a great way for businesses to engage with the awards without committing to completing a full entry via the main awards. “It provides great exposure through our marketing campaign and partnership with NZME.” Electra Business & Innovation Awards Board chair Brendan Duffy said the board is excited to introduce Top Shop this year. “We are really hoping that the public gets behind this and support the local businesses in their community and vote. We, as a board, are excited to continue to build on the Electra Business & Innovation Awards programme and continue to successfully showcase what the Kāpiti and Horowhenua regions have to offer.” Business registration is complete, and voting is open to the public from Monday, July 19 to Sunday, August 1. Further information on the awards and Top Shop is available at bkh.org.nz.

costs of daily operations rather than increasing borrowings. “2020 was a hard year for all of us. Covid-19 was unpredictable and left many people and businesses in a state of uncertainty. We held rates last year as we knew many were doing it tough, but we can’t continue to keep rates at the same levels,” said Mayor Wanden. “While the community may not see the infrastructure, we have a network of pipes, valves, pumps and tanks that manage the flow of our drinking water, stormwater and wastewater. “This network is dated and complex. It requires maintenance and ongoing investment to ensure it is resilient and can handle the growth we are experiencing.” Horowhenua District Council continues to provide a subsidy to low-income homeowners and ratepayers on the cost of their rates. The decision follows consideration of more than 500 submissions, along with listening to community members and organisations. Mayor Bernie Wanden said with Horowhenua’s population estimated to almost double by June 2041; the region is in a period of unprecedented growth. “Our Long Term Plan needs to proactively address this. We’ve committed to delivering robust infrastructure, including more storage for a high-quality drinking water supply to support the increased population. “We will fund growth infrastructure through development contributions and central government funding, ensuring growth costs are funded fairly by new development. “We will invest significantly in the replacement of our existing infrastructure as it is needed.” These investments equate to an average rate increase of 7.8% or $4 to $5 a week for properties. The increase is mostly due to the rising cost of infrastructure, including the costs to undertake reviews of assets condition and performance. Budgets have increased for maintenance costs, including water and wastewater pipes and treatment plans. The council has moved towards fully funding the costs of future asset replacement (depreciation) and all the

Archive discovery leads to club anniversary When Horowhenua Travel Club convenor Carol Dyer was volunteering in the heritage rooms at the Levin library recently, she discovered that 2021 marked the club’s 50th anniversary. Carol’s curiosity led her to look through three large, heavy books and found the club’s first minutes from the initial meeting, which led to the formation of the club. She said newspaper cuttings from The News, dated March 17, 1971, advertised a public meeting in the Levin Memorial Hall on March 24, to be chaired by Mayor CF Fuller. The initial public meeting drew a crowd of 100. Under the presidency of Mrs Marian Antcliff, membership increased to 150 members within four months and had a waiting list.

“This was an occasion not to be missed in my opinion. So I emailed our small committee and brought the subject up at a meeting. The few members who still belong are well travelled and well informed, having accomplished myriad trips to all corners of the earth. “We currently have 20 members, mostly older, who enjoy the wide-ranging topics provided by our speakers, some local and some from Kapiti,” said Carol. The club, which initially ran under the umbrella of NZ Travel Club Incorporated, meets at the Levin Brass Band Rooms on the third Tuesday of each month.

What’s in a qualification? by Andy Bryenton

This past week, an unexpected milestone was passed in NZ’s Covid recovery. Certain pundits and experts in the press claimed that New Zealand had not just avoided an unemployment surge, but was in fact, near ‘peak employment’. At the same time, the new normal across nearly all of the trades is a necessary waiting list for service, as professionals from plumbers to mechanics, electricians to builders report an inability to source skilled staff. Apprenticeships are up, after an uncertain period a decade ago when those numbers slumped under pressure for all students to seek tertiary academic honours. Demand is high for all of the trades involved in the construction industry, as we attempt to build our way clear of a housing crisis. The point is this; it takes times like these to appreciate just what’s in a qualification for professionals. Retreading the old adage that ‘you don’t know what you have until it’s not there’, the need for skilled tradespeople highlights just how much knowledge and expertise resides in the parallel industries which rely on qualified workers. An example, on these pages, you’ll see several respected companies of plumbers,

a trade that often has crossover into the realms of drainlaying, roofing, gasfitting and heating. Most would consider the trade of plumbing to be a down to earth and honest kind of role, working with one’s hands and practically constructing the means of sanitation and ablutions. However, it takes five years to learn all the intricacies of the trade. That’s as long as a master’s degree at university, and it’s added to by the possible need to specialise. There’s more to delve into when it comes to installing fireplaces, sweeping chimneys, mastering solar water heating or tackling gas installs. Qualifications also display immense variety, even within specific fields. Consider those in the medical profession; aside from doctors and nurses working in the hospital system and with local GPs, there are many other vital healthrelated professions, each with its own rigorous training regime and professional organisations. From pharmacy to

Professional skill comes from years of training, and a qualification is worth far more than its weight in gold

physiotherapy, massage and acupuncture, psychological counselling to dentistry and beyond, the calibre of skill and dedication required to attain the status of a professional is equal, in many cases, to that of a more conventionally titled ‘doctor’, let alone a doctor of letters. Other professionals don’t just train until they get their official title, then rest on their laurels. Keeping up with technology is

equally important, and new developments in the machinery or practices of a trade are literal game-changers. In parallel, many auto trade experts would have seen big changes in engine design, tyre technology, emissions standards and computer control during the past 25 years, as materials and designs improved and vehicle manufacturers demanded more from less

cubic displacement. In the auto trade, as in others like building and electrical engineering, technology sets the pace, and savvy business owners upskill their teams to offer the best service. This process is built upon, both literally and figuratively, by professional organisations such as this nation’s Certified Builders, Motor Trade Association, Master Plumbers and Master Builders, to name but a few. These organisations exist to ensure that their members are kept right up to date with the latest in best practice and regulations. It’s a challenging time right now, for example, as the old Resource Management Act enters its twilight and a new framework for building is on the way. Keeping abreast of the best ways to ensure a quality outcome is one facet of these organisations. Another is the constant upskilling of members through regular symposia and meetings, while yet another is a professional code of conduct and the provision of guarantees to give customers peace of mind. Therefore, a qualification is worth much more to many tradespeople than a university degree is to some who have achieved academic success, only to forge a career in a completely different discipline. That is reflected by the weight

that correct qualifications carry in the law; only those who are fully qualified may complete certain jobs in a construction project, for example. Fines are steep not just for those who masquerade as trained professionals but also for those who willingly hire such impostors. The real penalty, however, is that it’s all but impossible to sell a house that’s not able to be signed off as properly

certified; similar issues arise in other professions if trained experts haven’t certified the work. When you support your local professionals, you’re keeping skills in your town and, via those with apprenticeship programmes of their own, boosting local employment and ensuring a healthy workforce for the future. More than this, you’re acknowledging the hard work which went into becoming a qualified expert, a status you can trust.

Help for osteoarthritis — cartilage by John Arts

In theory, osteoarthritis is one of the simplest diseases. For years we thought that cartilage in our joints just wore away over time. We now know that OA is a complex disease where the processes that reduce cartilage are affected by genetics, past joint trauma and nutrition, especially levels of important antioxidants. Cartilage is different from other tissue types. It has no nerve or blood supply, and it appears as lifeless tissue. Cartilage is dynamic tissue: a matrix of proteins (collagen and elastin), chondroitin sulphate, water and living cells called chondrocytes. Research shows that the health of chondrocytes is central to the development of OA. Each chondrocyte looks after a small patch of cartilage, repairing damage by secreting new cartilage matrix where needed. The problem is when chondrocytes are damaged or die. This means that the cell can no longer maintain cartilage. Eventually, the cartilage thins, leading to a painful bone on bone scenario.

I use a two-pronged approach to supporting cartilage. Firstly, we add compounds, especially chondroitin, that can support and repair cartilage. Secondly, we add curcumin from turmeric and omega-3 fish oil to reduce inflammation. Often the inflammation causes more pain and mobility loss than the actual cartilage damage. Thirdly, we add the antioxidants that protect chondrocyte cells from further damage. One of the most annoying and painful arthritic joints are small hand joints. While nutritional therapy can help, these are among the slowest joints to respond. It seems counterintuitive, but big weight-bearing joints, especially knees, tend to respond faster. I have been helping someone with OA in their base thumb joint at the wrist. Within three months, the pain had reduced, and now, after a year, the discomfort is really minor only when under heavy use.

Now is the best time to service your outdoor power equipment, including rideon mowers, log splitters and chainsaws. Most of us are mowing fortnightly, giving us time to get our machinery serviced. Rob at Central Mowers has loan trailers to borrow so you can bring your gear in, or if you need anything picked up for you, just give them a call, and they can organise a time. Sourcing stock is still a challenge, and the word from their suppliers is, there is now a steady stream of stock arriving, but they are still struggling to meet backorders. Predictions are that wholesale goods pricing will increase from August onwards by between 5–15% to cover the massive jump in freight costs. Rob and the team have very good stock levels of whole goods, so if you are in the market for something new — call in and beat that price rise. Central Mowers’ largest sales have come from increased lifestyle block developments around the greater Manawatu, with the best-selling item being their Hustler zero-turn mower range. WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: July

Log Exports for Southern North Island Region It’s been a dream run over the past six months which has culminated in the highest export log prices we have seen in 30 odd years. As commented on previously, this has been because of a number of factors, mainly a lack of supply into China from Australia, Europe and the Pacific Northwest. This has, in turn, provided forest owners with stellar returns and allowed many contractors within the industry to recapitalise and improve the quality of their machinery. The increase in harvesting activity has put a strain on infrastructure and we are seeing this manifest into congestion at ports and increased turn-around times for trucks, trains and vessels. June has been especially problematic for port congestion. Repairs to Gisborne’s berth has resulted in load rates of less than half the usual level and, as of last week, there were around 13 vessels at anchor. The

average wait time for these vessels to get to the front of the que is around 22 days at a daily cost of around $US30,000 which equates to a total demurrage cost of $US660,000!! This congestion at Gisborne is pushing volume into Napier by truck which is creating space issues there and resulting in exporters scrambling to keep the gates open. To top this off there have been a number of vessels denied entry into NZ ports due to having a dirty hull, which is basically unwanted organisms growing on the underside of the vessel. This is a result of port congestion worldwide and vessels sitting parked up at ports in tropical waters for extended periods waiting to load or unload. NZ supply into China has been similar to previous months at around 2 million cubic metres but we are seeing some competing supply appear in the market from Uruguay and other

smaller players as prices reach a point that makes it worth while them exporting to China. Total inventory is still considered low at around 4.3 million cubic metres so there’s no real panic about a supply/demand imbalance, just yet. There are a few indicators that demand is dropping as construction activity in China tapers off. Efforts by a few NZ exporters to push the CFR price above $US200/m3 were met with resistance and resulted in a decrease into the early $US190’s, still a strong number but also an indication that we may have found the ceiling. Talking to a number of exporters last week the general comment was that Chinese buyers have stopped answering calls and closed the laptops. Whether this is a genuine drop in demand or an orchestrated ploy to get the sales price down, only time will tell but the silence is deafening.

Log exports make up 60% of where our logs go in New Zealand, with sawmills and processors taking the other 40%. There have been concerns lately that a perceived shortage of timber in New Zealand has been caused by log exports, but in fact these are different grades of logs. Traditionally our export logs are the lower quality with the higher quality pruned logs going to our sawmills. Incredible demand for our timber products within our country is driving our limited supply.

Zero slash in rain events Canterbury forestry companies and small forest holders checked their forests last month after a significant rain event in South Canterbury saw much unplanted land subjected to massive erosion and slips and whole farms covered in mud from upstream soil loss.

However, to the great relief of those with planted land, there was zero per cent slash movement or tree loss with this “one in one-hundred-year storm”. Although rivers and beaches were found to be choked with the usual storm debris, this was all found to be poplar and willow from the large-scale riverbank flooding. There have been no issues with any pine plantations. This situation was reflected in the Gisborne region, where heavy rains also saw extensive flooding of coastal towns. Tokomaru Bay, Waipiro Bay and Tolaga Bay had very little forestry slash

thrown up along waterways and on the beaches, in comparison with past events. Eastland Wood Council chief executive Philip Hope says some debris has come ashore on the beaches in the floodaffected areas, but very little of it, if any, is from forestry, “which is encouraging.” Meanwhile, unprecedented demand for processed timber products is being seen right across New Zealand, driven by house prices, and this has put substantial strain on our supply chain. Juken is one of the larger processors for framing timber in New Zealand and cannot currently keep up with the huge surge in orders that has happened very quickly since late-2020.

Processors are looking at long-term solutions of capital investment and upscaling. However, this all takes time, and there is a level of risk for future demand. There are constraints on quickly expanding the manufacturing sector with huge compliance costs and a lack of labour. All processors in New Zealand are looking at getting more product to the market, although currently, this sector has been producing more framing timber every year, with this year the most ever produced to meet market needs. Advice for customers is to plan 12 months ahead with building projects and give local suppliers time to order.

Levy backed by farmers for advocacy by Andy Bryenton

Farmers have had their chance to vote on levies on beef and lamb to help fund a strong voice for the industry and have overwhelmingly come down on the side of continuing them. The 2021 sheepmeat and beef levy referendum called for a mandate on the continuation of the levies. When the declaration of result from independent returning officer Warwick Lampp was released, it showed a landslide of support, not just for continuation but even for an incremental increase. In total, 89.8% of farmers voted in favour of the sheepmeat levy on a one farmer, one vote basis, with support of 92.0% on a weighted stock unit basis. A further 88.1% of farmers voted in support of the beef levy on a one farmer, one vote basis, with support of 89.4% on a weighted stock unit basis. The proposal to increase the sheepmeat levy from 70 cents to 75 cents also passed. Voting numbers were high, with 5,295 farmers voting. “Now, more than ever, farmers need a strong voice representing their interests domestically and internationally, positioning our product with consumers, and providing them with the support they need on-farm to run more

Groundswell of opinion against over-regulation by Andy Bryenton

The name Groundswell NZ has become prominent in the North Island this month. After a long period of voicing farmers’ concerns in the south, the advocacy group is stepping up to lead the charge on issues facing dairy and livestock operators. “We’re being penalised for living in a rural area or for having a practical work vehicle,” says Groundswell NZ’s spokesperson Bryce McKenzie. The group is a pro-rural grassroots movement, shouting back against over-regulation and central government impositions, such as the recent ‘ute tax’. McKenzie cites other regulatory strikes for farmers too. These include freshwater regulations and the well-publicised mapping debacle wrapped up in their roll-out, winter grazing rules, which have been backtracked due to unworkability, and the recent Significant Natural Areas controversy. Groundswell’s spokesperson on the subject claims to have been fighting the process since the late 1990s when the concept of SNAs was first floated. “We were some of the first landowners through the SNA process,” says Jamie McFadden, a former livestock farmer and environmental recovery specialist. “We’ve been battling SNAs for 27 years. Initially, they tried to take 120 hectares of our land; we thought we’d compromise and offer 20 hectares of our best native bush.” Ironically, Mr McFadden’s parents had refused government subsidies to clear this forest in earlier decades.

“We took our case to the Environment Court and won. One of the things we learned about the SNA process was that as soon as you let surveyors on your land, that information becomes public. They used this information against us in the environment court and tried to secure as much land as they could. Landowners are just unaware of the full implications of these SNAs.” Groundswell shot to prominence with recent protests nationwide in rural towns, held on July 16. Called, A Howl of Protest, these well-publicised gatherings encouraged farmers, tradies and their supporters to show opposition to overregulation. Local centres like Feilding and Palmerston North were on the map for civil dissent. Meanwhile, The ACT party has revealed an alternative; a $10 million plan to preserve truly significant natural features under a scheme similar to the existing Queen Elizabeth II Trust. Speaking at the National Fieldays® in Hamilton, ACT leader David Seymour said that Environment Minister James Shaw’s ‘pause button’ approach is not enough. “Protecting biodiversity is a goal shared by all New Zealanders, but SNAs undermine private property rights and

Tractors took to the streets alongside tradespeople’s utes as Groundswell NZ called for a protest. The group now seems poised to carry the banner for farming against over-regulation

the conservation efforts of the people who care most about the environment,” Seymour said.
