In a digital age, print media still stands tall for the decision makers of rural New Zealand. That’s the finding of a major survey undertaken recently by four of the major publishers who serve the farming community — and it’s one, which proves that good old-fashioned ink on paper is more than just ‘still relevant’ — it’s a force for change in the Kiwi heartland.

In fact, the survey shows that a whopping 88% of Kiwi farmers read a specialist rural paper weekly. 82% put what they read into practice, ranking rural print media as one of the top three factors in their decision-making. Fully one-third admit that rural publications alone has convinced them to make a purchase for the farm. It seems that these purchases aren’t small, either — the breadth of coverage and the ability to lay out a complete detailed review mean that tractors, vehicles, vet products and agrichemicals top the list of items bought — thanks to the influence of the press. The Rural Media Habits Survey 2018 focuses in on those who manage either large areas of land or substantial numbers of livestock. It drills down to the media access preferences of those at the forefront of agriculture. While the answers unsurprisingly acknowledge the influence of the internet as a communications tool, the importance of print media is thrown into stark focus. Like the ebook, which has resolutely failed to supplant the old-fashioned paperback, the internet is revealed as a preferred tool for quick communication — 80% of respondents picked ‘email’

as their number one digital task, followed by online banking. Third place, went to doing further research into things they’d seen in rural newspapers and magazines. Another key factor in the survey is good news for businesses wishing to reach out to the rural sector. There’s a very clear answer given, here, to the vexing question of quantifying the impact of marketing to our nation’s farmers. When asked how likely they were to pay attention to advertising each week across different media streams, the greatest number agreed that they were likely to read advertising material in rural magazines and newspapers. The area where ads were unlikely to be payed attention to were on the internet and television. It has been tempting in recent years to give credence to rumours that the world of media is going entirely digital. This survey proves otherwise in clear and simple terms. Because out there in rural New Zealand, it seems that the real news is still delivered on paper, and still carries a hefty amount of decisioninfluencing information, appreciated by an audience with their minds on business.

Wet weather a reminder to keep stock off stopbanks The onset of wet weather, coupled with the recent opening of the Moutoa floodgates, serves as a reminder to keep grazing stock off stopbanks. The reminder applies to both farmers and owners of lifestyle blocks as wetter soil conditions, combined with heavy animals or smaller animals that dig, can weaken the region’s stopbanks. Horizons group manager river management, Ramon Strong, said keeping grazing stock off stopbanks ensures they are best able to perform their function as an essential flood protection asset. “While stopbanks can be grazed by cattle less than 18 months of age when the ground is firm in summer, grazing with cattle is not permitted under any circumstances between June 15 and September 15.” “As wet weather sets in, it’s really important stopbanks maintain enough grass to prevent scouring in a flood event like we’ve had this week. Farmers and landowners know this and in most cases are very cooperative,” said Mr Strong. “We really appreciate the effort many farmers put in to control stock damage by grazing during the year. However, it is the time of year again where stock needs to be grazed elsewhere to avoid any damage.” Mr Strong says it is a statutory offence to damage the stopbanks and landowners can be held liable

to pay for any resulting repairs. “The stopbanks not only protect property and production worth millions of dollars, but they also ensure the safety of many in our community.” “Any chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and all it takes is one breached section of stopbank to flood hundreds of hectares of farmland,” he said. Horizons manages and maintains close to 490km of stopbanks, protecting over 46,000 hectares of land. The stopbanks are a primary flood protection tool throughout the region. Recent upgrades have concentrated on raising stopbanks in the Lower Manawatu Scheme. Once completed, properties in the area will receive protection from a one-in-100-year flood, which has a one per cent chance of happening in any given year. Mr Strong said these upgrades help strengthen the level of flood protection for the Lower Manawatu Scheme and are part of a substantial programme of work under way since the 2004 floods. A copy of the stopbank grazing guidelines pamphlet is available to view online at horizons.govt.nz with hard copies available upon request.

PREPARING FOR GRAND FINAL by Denise Gunn Following his win in the Taranaki/Manawatu FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Will Taylor is putting in the hard yards during the lead-up to the national grand final.

T

he Marton Young Farmers vicechairman grew up on a finishing farm near Feilding, providing him with a foundation of skills and knowledge. His father’s agricultural contracting business also gave Will additional experience in this area. “My upbringing helped me develop my passion for agriculture and knowing that I wanted to make it my career,” said Will.

When Will finished high school, he spent three years driving tractors and combine harvesters on large-scale arable properties in Western Australia. “After returning home, I expanded my experience, spending two-and-a-half years in Turakina on a cropping and beef fattening farm.” Will then branched out again, gaining sales experience for John Deere in

so when I encounter something new, I am always keen to go find answers and learn more. I also enjoy spending time working alongside clients, helping them with their day-to-day operations such as drenching, dagging, calf marking and fencing.” Will joined Marton Young Farmers a couple of years ago. “I enjoy being able to make new friends with similar interests that have introduced me to new ideas and perspectives.” This year was the second time Will competed in a regional Young Farmers competition final. The 26-year-old said it was a massive learning curve and made him realise how broad the industry is and how diverse the competition can be. “It made me really motivated to come back this year and do my best.” The event saw eight finalists from across the region tackle a series of gruelling modules, including a fastpaced agri-knowledge quiz. As part of his preparation for the national grand final,

Will plans to spend more time gaining as much experience as possible in a variety of farming systems. I will also be studying up to improve my technical knowledge of all things farm-related.” In his spare time, Will competes in small-bore target shooting at a high level. “I found this to be extremely challenging for mental capacity and state of mind, which is why I enjoy it so much.” A couple of years ago Will bought a bare block of land in Feilding. With the help of family and friends, he has fenced, built yards, a woolshed, renovated pastures, completed some drainage and other improvements. He’s currently running breeding ewes and finishing lambs on the property. “My short-term goal is to get my farm all set-up and running well with all the facilities, a new shed and a house,” he said. “The FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final will be held in Invercargill from July 5–7.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Denise Gunn When a 12-year-old heading dog named Tod arrived at Tararua Vets in Pahiatua for his final visit, he gave vet nurse Natalie Smith a look like he wasn’t ready to go. Natalie called his owners and arranged a retirement home for Tod. Six years later, Natalie has rehomed retired working dogs all over the country through Retired Working Dogs (RWD) NZ.

“W

e help farmers find retirement homes for their dogs after all those years of hard work,” said Natalie. “We also rehome the young ‘failed’ dogs; those who are a bit soft for the job, and we get quite a few working breed pet dogs through as well.” Farmers contact RWD through the organisation’s Facebook page facebook. com/Retired.WorkingDogs or website retiredworkingdogs.org.nz. The dogs that can stay on-farm until they have found a new home are then advertised on behalf of the farmers. Natalie says it’s then up to the farmer to decide where the dog will go. “Sometimes we have dogs that need to be off-farm for whatever reason, and so we take them into foster care.” The dogs are desexed, vaccinated and socialised before advertising begins.

Dogs are also often referred to RWD through veterinary clinics. These dogs tend to have sustained careerending injuries. “We take these dogs into foster and have the surgeries done, and then rehome them.” Pounds, the SPCA and other rescue agencies refer dogs too. “People also contact us looking for dogs, so we advertise for them as well.” Dogs have been taken in from Northland to Otago. All potential new owners are met and their properties inspected. Dogs go out on trial and if it doesn’t work out, they are returned to RWD. A team of fosterers, located from Martinborough to Ohakune, play a critical role behind the scenes to help the dogs. “Fosterers are so important,” said Natalie. “They take the dogs in and teach them how to be pets.

As most of the dogs have never been inside previously, they need to learn about cats, children and sleeping inside. The fosterers take the dogs to vet appointments and to meet prospective, new owners. Natalie said one of the fosterers is a sheep and beef farmer. “This is brilliant because when we get dogs from the pound, they go up there so we can learn whether they want to go to a working home or a pet home.” Philip Cox has been fostering working dogs for the past six years. He and his wife Karen live in rural Wairarapa, surrounded by farmland, river and hills. Philip said they foster dogs to give them a second chance after coming off the farm. When a dog arrives on the property, the couple tries to establish a routine around sleeping and feeding. “It’s important that it has a safe space and it isn’t threatened. Once you see

their confidence increase, you can move forward with walks and socialising.” Philip says involvement with RWD has taught them much about dogs and people. “When you see the way some dogs have been treated, your heart goes out to them, and it’s so important to give them a safe place.” Manawatu-based Vicki Lim has had a soft spot for working dogs after meeting them in her capacity as a veterinary student. She has since fostered eight dogs. “They’re intelligent and affectionate and are able to match your lifestyle really well,” she said. “They tend to be very well-behaved and willing to please, which makes them really trainable. “We’re extremely proud to be able to give these awesome dogs a

taste for country life came through his primary education at Kairanga School, just ten minutes drive from the city. “I then went to Feilding High School where I took agriculture classes and did farm duty,” said Sam. Two years after leaving school, Sam took up his current farm assistant position for Bruce and Colin MacMillan on their Crestview Farms near Colyton. Sam has now worked on the farm for the past three seasons. A herd of 330 cows are milked on the 160ha-effective farm. The majority of the

herd is Friesian with the rest crossbreed. “We farm on very heavy clay soil,” said Sam. “This means the ground is so wet; you can’t get into the paddocks without getting stuck in the winter. In the summer it’s hard and dry, so you struggle to get standards in. “Finding dryish paddocks that the cows won’t pug in the winter is always a challenge.” Turnips are grown on the farm as a summer crop, as well as cutting hay and silage. Maize, grass silage and palm kernel are bought in. Sam has continued studying and almost

completed a dairy livestock husbandry course with Primary ITO. “I’m starting a feeding and pasture course in September, and I’m also currently doing a DairyNZ business start course.” In preparation for taking on the role of calf-rearer this season, Sam attended a calf-rearing workshop. “I thought I was well prepared to take it on,” says Sam. “It turned out to be one of the toughest years, the weather was rubbish, and we had a lot of sick calves.” Sam found the situation mentally challenging.

“It forced me to think outside the box and find different ways to doing things. I’m now looking forward to next season to take on the challenge again.” Although it was working outdoors and with animals, which initially drew Sam to the dairy industry, he has found more advantages. “As I have become more involved in the farming community, such as Fitzherbert Young Farmers Club, it’s been the like-minded people that I’ve made friends with that I’ve loved most.” “And there is nothing better than watching the sunrise and smelling

Holiday Guide Planning your escape by Jill Dickie

Living the dream lifestyle on a farm or lifestyle block sounds idyllic, and there should never be a need to leave, but the reality is everyone needs to get away from the routine now and then. That means considering the animals’ feed supply, the mail pickup and how safe and secure your property will be while you’re gone. The most reassuring option is to arrange to have someone live in your property for the duration. There are various minding and house-sitting services available to choose from, with responsible, knowledgeable people who will care for your home and stock. Another option for your animals is to rotate their grazing paddocks in such a way that they will be placed close to a road where a friendly neighbour can keep an eye on them for you, and take action if needed, and perhaps they have a teenager at home that might check on your cat and feed your chickens. Maintaining healthy relationships with neighbours is important for cooperative

living and at holiday times the friendships built to enable you a relaxing trip away confident in the knowledge your property is well looked after. If you’re holidaying in summer months, it’s a good idea to do a quick maintenance check ensuring fences are in good repair, and water troughs are functioning and set up an automatic sprinkler system on your vegetable garden. Indoor pot plants can be set in buckets to draw up the water when they need it. For the winter months similar things apply with regard to fencing and water, but also some thought should be given to animal shelters or sheds. You may choose to lock gates around

If you have precious stock like cattle that are clever at opening gates, it may be an opportune time to put a combination lock on. So far none have been known to work out the correct number! As is ‘Murphy’s law’ whatever doesn’t happen when you’re at home, will potentially happen when you’re not, so

leaving a thorough list of instructions and contact phone numbers with a housesitter is a perfect way of counteracting troubles. An instruction list should include animal feeding schedules, where to turn off electric fencing, combination lock numbers (but don’t let the cows see!), emergency contact details such as doctor, vet and neighbours and your own itinerary and contact number. WHANGANUI

Take in the culture of the Whanganui river by Jill Dickie

Visitors to Whanganui and even locals, should include a trip along the river and travel the road beside it into the Whanganui National Park to enjoy the stunning scenery and historical places of interest. Whether it’s a four-day trip or a couple of hours, cycling, hiking or taking in the views from a canoe or riverboat — the river is guaranteed to please. There are guided canoe tours available, which will take you on a path of discovery learning about the culture and heritage of the area, or you can hire your own and enjoy the peace and tranquillity travelling at your own pace. Perhaps an exhilarating jet boat ride may be more your thing, where you can take in the spectacular scenery particularly in the middle reaches of the river where the gorges narrow through the native forest. A short 45 minute tour takes you upriver to see the three Puraroto and Dress Circle caves. It is also possible to visit the well known ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ by jet boat. The bridge was built as access for early settlers but was abandoned, when they discovered the land was too inhospitable for farming — it remains a popular tourist destination. Another way to experience the river is by taking New Zealand’s last steampowered and coal-fired passenger paddle steamer, the Waimarie. Salvaged from the bottom of the river after laying there for around 50 years, this must be the most authentic way to enjoy the river’s scenery and history.

If authenticity is of special interest, you may also like to indulge in the history of the vintage riverboat Wairua, which was carefully restored for use on the river. Wairua now takes tours and charters along the river she used to travel upon carrying passengers and cargo. Some people may prefer to stay on land but still want to experience the river culture — so the River Road may be appreciated, where local iwi heritage, remnants of early European settlement and historical landmarks feature. As a part of New Zealand’s walking and cycling trails, the River Road takes you alongside the Whanganui through small settlements and marae providing opportunities for outstanding views and photography of bush and waterfalls, and a beautifully maintained mission church. The river was and is of immense cultural significance to local Maori who used it as a highway, a food source and a home. Ko au te awa ko awa ko au — I am the river and the river is me.

FORESTRY

A history of native timber milling by Jill Dickie

The traces of the once-thriving native timber industry have nearly disappeared, and just a small amount is still produced — an even smaller amount is exported. The scarcity of native timber has led to kauri, rimu and other woods being recycled for furniture and crafts.

FORES TRY S ERVI C E S

A national survey completed around 1955 showed that native forests had not regenerated as expected, and the NZ Forest Service tried to reduce the cutting of native trees. Under pressure from sawmillers, they chose to completely clear areas of native forest and plant faster-growing exotic trees such as pine in their place. With growing support for natural reserves and conservation practices, and publicly owned native forests

being handed into the care of the new Department of Conservation, considered techniques such as selective logging aimed towards better sustainability. New logging techniques are now in place, with consideration given to avoid damage and preserve ecosystems. Discussions continue over the best long-term management practice to maintain the health of native forests and reserves, yet control animal and plant pests.

RECORDS Work in Forestry This nationally recognised qualification covers logging techniques and safety - essential skills for a job in forestry. Our pine forests aren’t just left to grow on their own - they need workers to maintain them. We are celebrating. Exports of New Zealand forest products will top $6 billion for the first time this year. About half the value comes from shipments of sawn timber, paper and other processing. Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. preserve New Zealand’s native timber industry heritage. They tell the stories of past generations who worked hard to make a living getting wood from trees. When European settlers arrived in New Zealand in the early to mid-1800s, they needed wood for cooking, heating, fencing and housing. Hardwoods such as totara and beech made sturdy posts for wharves, and later kauri was used for making furniture and building boats, due to its lightness and strength. A timber industry rapidly grew as sawmills were established near forests and in coastal towns. Logging increased, and by the early 1900s, there were more than 400 sawmills processing timber, to supply the domestic market. Many feared the timber would run out, however, so instead of cutting forests until they were exhausted, a new policy of sustained yield management aimed to keep them producing indefinitely, by logging parts of a forest, which was then allowed to regenerate.

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts

Part 1 Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain. All chronic disease starts with damage to certain cell types that then damages tissue which causes the symptoms we feel. The real driver behind cartilage loss is the health of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells secrete and repair cartilage matrix. Anything that affects chondrocyte cells could cause cartilage damage. Mechanical force (injury) can trigger an increase in free radicals, which can cause the death of chondrocytes. In some cases, it is as much about a failure of cell antioxidants defences. The problem is that chondrocytes cannot replicate. Once a chondrocyte dies, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will eventually disintegrate. The body tries to fix the problem through the process of inflammation, which is ineffective — it ends up making the problem worse. In my experience, the inflammatory part of OA causes more pain and discomfort than the actual cartilage loss. Just a note that commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication can

either cause joint pain or worsen the pain from existing arthritis. In these cases, I add a high-grade coenzyme Q10 (CoQSol) to replace that lost by the medication. Call me for details. I have many clients that are largely symptom-free despite having significant cartilage loss. I have been dealing with a couple where one has an arthritic knee while the other has OA in the spine and hip. I started them on a double dose of my joint supplement. This meant that they were initially taking 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. I put both of them on a double dose of my high chondroitin/turmeric joint product, and both are much more comfortable. The sore back is much better, and the hip and knee pain have significantly reduced. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. There’s no denying that having an air conditioner makes life so much more comfortable when you’re battling the climate. Even in the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter, having a reliable unit can ensure that you’re comfortable all year round.

However, there comes a time when your old trusty air conditioner just doesn’t perform as well as it once did. Excessive noise, costly repairs, unusually high energy costs and uneven cooling/heating are some signs that your air conditioning unit might be on the way out.

EDUCATION Choose the right option Whether you are helping your teen decide which school to go to or what to do when they graduate there are a number of options to choose from. A common question for parents living rurally is should they consider boarding school for their children due to isolation and options. There are many reasons to go to boarding school, and academics, athletics and the extracurricular activities available are just a few of the considerations. Boarding schools generally have good sports facilities and after-school activities. Students find sports choices ranging from swimming and athletics to hockey, basketball, rugby and soccer whilst some have equestrian facilities. Theatre, dance, music and the arts are often part of the opportunity which awaits. It is never easy to leave the nest, but pupils learn how to cope with life and its high and low points within a community of peers and make lifelong friendships. If school is not where your older child is performing best, because they don’t fit the mould, investigate educational institutions such as Northtec or other similar organisations. With small class sizes and knowledgeable tutors, students receive encouragement and support to learn. NorthTec programmes use a range of delivery methods, from classroom time to field trips and project-based learning. They offer a range of programmes including health, business, technology, tourism, education, Maori studies, the arts, painting, agriculture, construction, hospitality, apiculture, agribusiness management and commercial transport. It also has taster programmes designed to give students with an interest in a career in agriculture a taste of what it is like to live and learn at Taratahi. Students receive a broad exposure to various farming activities and also get to know many of the staff and tutors on campus. Often alternative education proves to be the making of some students. Looking into apprenticeship schemes in your local area to see if your child can get a head start in a career which they are passionate about is also an option.

Community learning is the way of the future by Jill Dickie

The award-winning community learning service Community Education — Wanganui is a very popular resource offering courses on a wide range of subjects to people in the Wanganui region. Education is a brilliant way of bringing like-minded people together to advance their skills and learn new ones, creating lifelong bonds of unity and friendship, resulting in a community that stands together both in times of adversity and in joy. It is society’s absolute greatest resource and the foundation for the most positive future we could hope for. Education for job training for the future of the economy, for knowledge for the future of teaching, for personal awareness for health and well-being. Schooling teaches us how to learn therefore learning how to create change, and each of us becomes teachers in our own way, passing on our stories, experience, knowledge and skills to others whether we mean to or not. Within this mindset of learning and growing to make our futures better the Community Education team provide many courses for people to consider. From work-related topics such as computers, woodworking, and

beekeeping; speciality topics such as photography and massage; to lifestyle topics such as gardening, cooking and music. More than 30 subjects are available, and the team invite people to contact them if something of particular interest is required. Accepting the need for more knowledge can be a journey alone, before even contemplating stepping outside our comfort zone and learning something new, but the personal development and strength gained far outweighs the feelings of vulnerability, growing our resilience to challenging situations. This is why education is important and necessary for the continued survival of society — in schools or outside of them; education brings us the knowledge we need to hope for and create the future we desire. Could you write a story about dairy effluent? Something interesting for our farmers to read? This was the question posed to the writer who freely admits cattle are not her thing, having had a childhood around sheep and then spent many years around horses. What is this thing called effluent? Obviously much more than the first thoughts of bovine faecal matter; it appears this waste product actually has some use! Research shows it is a valuable resource, which, when managed well, increases pasture production and reduces fertiliser costs, so we’re picking that farmers need to effectively reuse this nutrient-filled product on their pastures yet at the same time minimising adverse effects on the environment. That much is easy to understand, however then our research gets a little more tricky as we discover there are various methods of building effluent systems, managing the storage of said product and compliance checks. A traditionally designed system with effluent washed to a storage area from the yards, then being pumped out onto paddocks via irrigators seems very easy to understand, but we have to take into account the climate and soil conditions in our area and how they will affect the effectiveness of the system. Understanding the soil water deficit is essential to prevent ponding and run-

off, and to avoid applying effluent to saturated soils — now we are getting a little technical, but luckily there are calculators available to work out appropriate spreading levels. Considering the storage facility, it seems the most common options are above-ground tanks and lined ponds, neither of which one would want to fall into! Again a calculator is available for working out much storage area is needed for your particular farm based on soil types and how much rainfall is common. Fencing ponds is an obvious safety priority to prevent stock and children from accidentally falling in, and keeping gates locked and perhaps using electric fencing as well certainly makes sense. Escape ladders are also recommended as an alternative escape route, as is good signage advising of potential dangers. Guidebooks for self-monitoring compliance issues are available for download, which would highlight areas for improvement, but even better is a visit from a dairy effluent warrant of fitness assessor to make sure your system is fit for purpose, nutrient levels

are appropriate and identify any health and safety hazards you may not be aware of. It all seems pretty simple to understand, and while this writer feels more educated on the topic, she feels she might stick with the easier to manage equine equivalent!

Petrolhead heaven has arrived Car, bike, racing and hot rod fans — this one is for you. The 12th edition of the country’s best motorsport, hot rod and automotive show — CRC Speedshow — will take place at the ASB Showgrounds over the weekend of July 21 and 22 and it looks set to be an absolute cracker. This year one of the most recognised personalities in global motoring and motorsport will also be a big part of the show...the very first Top Gear Stig, a.k.a. ex-F1 driver Perry McCarthy. McCarthy’s Formula One experience is the stuff of legend as were his exploits as the Stig and he is certain to be a very popular addition to an already packed and bursting show. The main halls three and four will once again display some of the country’s finest autos, and the trade area in hall two will be in full swing too. The outdoor live-action arena offers thrills in the open air, while other live displays and demonstrations will be going on throughout the show. These include pit stop competitions, police recruitment and numerous other initiatives designed to engage and immerse fans. Hot Rods again form a solid element of the show which has become the number one place in New Zealand to launch new rods or show rare creations. Organisers again expect the Teng Tools Grand National Rod & Custom show in

hall one to be packed to the brim with more than 50 of the best machines in New Zealand and indeed the world. With a bunch of awesome vintage, retro and hot rod related businesses there will be something for everyone at Petrolhead Magazine Retro-ORama in hall six — ‘mantiques’, memorabilia and collectibles, genuine, reproduction, retro and vintage clothing, shoes and accessories, handbags and wallets, makeovers, kustom artists and much, much more! To celebrate the big screen history of the automobile, CRC Speedshow will also have a huge area dedicated to movie vehicles. Already lined up are icons recognisable in the Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Gone in 60 Seconds, Mad Max, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Stephen King’s Christine, Herbie, The World’s Fastest Indian, Jurassic Park Ford Explorer, American Graffiti, Thelma & Louise — and of course a Mini from our own Goodbye Pork Pie! Good farming practices Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as providing a whole of sector approach that builds on the good work already being done by individual industries. “The launch of the Good Farming Practice Action plan is an exciting oppor tunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles and actions to implement those across the country.” The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management and water and irrigation systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector. “As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action

Plan as completely achievable. At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It is aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement,” Mr McIvor said. “Clean water is one of the four priorities in our strategy. Our strategy sets out a number of ways in which we will improve water quality, including all sheep and beef farmers to have a tailored farm environment plan by the end of 2021. “The Good Farming Practice Action Plan gives us a whole of sector approach to lifting our environmental game even more and taking a consistent approach.” The Good Farming Practice Action Plan
