Agcarm offers two scholarships a year to support education and to raise awareness about careers in Agcarmrelated industries. Nineteen-year-old Sarah is studying towards a Bachelor of Horticultural Science. Her interest in horticulture developed while growing vegetables, plants and flowers on the sheep and beef farm she grew up on at Ngapaeruru, 20km east of Dannevirke. Sarah said her passion for growing plants was behind her decision to study horticultural science. During the summer, Sarah worked at BioLumic, near Massey University. “BioLumic is photobiology research and development centre. The BioLumic UV technology delivers ultraviolet light to seeds and seedlings to trigger biological mechanisms that increase plant growth, vigour and yields,” she said. “The work that I did was horticultural technical activities, which included gathering and recording data from the trials that were carried out.” Sarah is keeping her career-path options open but is tempted to pursue an interest in research and development. She is also considering nursery work. “I really enjoy learning about plants, the

range of ways in which they can be used, and learning about plant protection related to weeds, pests and diseases.” Imogen won the veterinary science scholarship and is currently in her third year of studies — halfway towards completing a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Imogen’s current plan is to go into mixed practice after graduation. She particularly enjoys working with cats, dogs, cows and sheep. “I love the problem-solving aspect of it. Each case really is just a problem you have to solve. The problem being the animal’s injury or illness and the solution being the treatment. “It’s a career that will forever push you to be learning, and you will never have a day that is quite like the day before. It is an amazing industry to be in where vets get to work with both animals and people and make a real difference in so many areas. The scholarships are an example of industry initiatives led by Agcarm to provide safe and sustainable animal health and crop protection technology for the future of New Zealand, and educating the community about the industry’s contribution.

Memorial bursary awarded Horizons Regional Council has awarded two environmental studies students with the Don Linklater Memorial Bursary for 2019. The Don Linklater Memorial Bursary was established to honour the contribution made to the region by the late Don Linklater, who was Horizons chair from 1989 to 2000. Horizons chair Bruce Gordon said this year’s bursary was worth up to $3,000 a student each year, for up to three years and aims to support students studying at either undergraduate or post-graduate level. “The students, Rebecca Hillyard and Katherine Martin, have each been awarded $3,000 for the 2019 academic year.” “This year’s applicants were of an exceptional calibre, and we’re pleased to be able to provide the bursary to two of them.” Cr Gordon said the bursary is a fantastic way of supporting students while contributing to the environmental work Horizons undertakes. “These students are the future of environmental management in our region and supporting them in their study contributes to investing in the future management of our natural resources.” Rebecca is studying towards a Master of Environmental Management at Massey University. “My course of study provides me with the skills that I’ll need when addressing environmental issues,” she said. “There is a particular focus on gaining

practical knowledge in the areas of resource management, geographic infor mation systems and e nv i r o n m e n t a l impact assessment. “I aim to use these skills to reduce the environmental impact we are having on our natural world, and to assist in building a future where we are accountable for the resources that we use and the footprint we create.” Katherine is studying towards a Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning with a minor in geography, also at Massey University. “I chose to study planning as it combines my interests surrounding the environment and the law,” she said. “I aspire to be part of the growth of sustainability in New Zealand and am passionate about working with people and the urban Horizons chair Bruce Gordon said the bursary is a fantastic way to support students and rural environments we interact with. sustainable farming and protecting “I am excited that I will be able to waterways during and after my degree.” contribute to dealing with sustainability Applications for the 2020 funding issues related to resource management, round will open early next year.

A PERSIMMON

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The Wells family are passionate about quality, and growing persimmon is the choice Lindsay and Terrie made to help give the fruit the recognition it deserves.

“P

ersimmon is a versatile, colourful ‘superfood’ that is underestimated by most people,” says son Duane who manages the family business NTL Horticulture. “Dad went to a meeting in the 1970s regarding growing — the room on the right was for kiwifruit information, and the room on the left was persimmon. Most people were going for kiwifruit, but dad wanted to be involved in something different. I believe he had an understanding of where the markets were heading, particularly with the Asian culture.” Lindsay died unexpectedly on August 9 last year, leaving a huge gap in the family, the business and the persimmon industry. “Dad was on the Persimmon Industry Council for many years and

was passionate about promoting the fruit and was well respected across the country. He could see the potential in marketing the product. “I naturally became involved on the council myself 10 years ago and am now the chairman. Dad was the chairman from the early ’80s until 2010 helping regulate the export of the product. “The fruit is not that well known here — those who like them love them and those who don’t know them don’t go near them. I encourage people to try them, they used to be that ‘horrible fruit’ out the back yard of nanas’ that you dared your cousins to eat. To the Asian culture, they are extremely well-known for their health benefits and are a super fruit in their own right.” A native to China persimmon trees have been grown for thousands of

years for their delicious fruit, health benefits and beautiful wood. They are orange-coloured and have a sweet, honey-like flavour, are full of nutrients, antioxidants, are rich in fibre and support healthy vision. “The fruit can be eaten freshly picked from the tree like an apple, or sliced into crisp, sweet, melon-like wedges, skin and all. The crisp fruit can be popped in a paper bag for a couple of days with an apple to release ethylene, which will ripen them. Persimmons can be cooked into chutney, marmalade or jam, or can be made into a delicious sorbet,” says Duane. “There has been a lack of marketing and sex appeal to promote it as a super fruit. Anything you can do with an apple you can do with a persimmon. It is very refreshing, and vibrant in colour for adding to salads and they make great desserts.” Late last year the family launched a non-dairy and gluten free ice cream range. “The ice cream was one of dad’s brainchilds, and he was excited to know it was turning into a positive advancement for the family as we prepared to launch at Countdown supermarkets in October under his brand ‘My Goodness’. “By good fortune, we stumbled across a unique process that allows us to create a product that resembles ice cream and has no dairy, very minimal fat, gluten free, suitable for vegans and is over 60 per cent whole fruit. Dad was really proud of that. He was the staunchest fan of persimmon in every

possible way. He was a very integral part of the business, and his input was the backbone of the industry and our family. He established this horticulture block from a simple piece of land and provided us the opportunity to work and live happily in the same environment which is a unique achievement. “Our operation grew over the years, and we opened a harvest packing business, which we began in 1981, and we deal with export avocado as well. Being growers, we understand the hard work required to produce a quality crop with influences like the weather and markets beyond our control. “Mum is still an integral part of the business, and they did it together. My sister Bronwyn is the production manager of the orchard and her husband Lance

is the orchard operations manager. My wife Sarah has come on board and helps liaise with the packhouse and looks after the marketing and promotional activity for ‘My Goodness’. “I am hoping we will have other products and avenues that we can move forward with. “The success is all due to our parents having vision; with dad being one of the founding members of the persimmon industry itself and Bronny and I will continue to do our best to carry that on.”

Taihape resident and former world champion woolhandler Sheree Alabaster grew up in the shearing world and encourages others to join the industry as a way to travel and participate in competitions.

y parents Ray and Libby started a shearing run in the 1970s and dad was a Golden Shears champion and was in the New Zealand shearing team,” says Sheree. “Through the run, they were able to purchase their farm. When I was growing up mum would assist when she could, and I would help in the school holidays. It was different to the seasons we have now — back then shearing ended at the end of January, now the times differ due to a change in shearing patterns. “We used to camp out, and my main job was to support the cook and then go to the woolshed and do the woolhandling, which was called rousing.” Sheree began helping her dad at six years old gathering the wool and

did her first big stint at 13 years old. “We were on a stay out, and one of the ladies got very sick. Dad couldn’t find a wool handler, so I said I would do it. The first two days I enjoyed and then I struggled but kept at it — they were nine-hour days. Every summer I would help, it was like a holiday as you got to meet many different people and through them, I travelled the world. One of dad’s shearers now lives in Scotland, one is in Norway and one is in Wales. “At the end of school I went to teachers college, and my savings from wool handling helped pay for my degree. Eventually, I took a year off teaching and went to Scotland and Norway to learn how they do things and travelled around Europe as well. Our whole family are involved in the shearing industry.

My cousin Reuben is doing well, and his sister has picked up a handpiece, and his little sister wants to be a wool handler. My dad died eight years ago, and Reuben’s dad now leases our farm and keeps things going. “Dad was a show shearer and judge and mum a woolhandling judge, and I travelled with them. At 21 I started making some finals and enjoyed the competition — I went through the junior and senior grades and am now in the open. I gained first place in the North Island Circuit Open final for three longwool fleeces and three secondshear, with 159.38pts, and am in the Trans Tasman team. I have been a world champ team member in the past, and at this year’s Golden Shears I was picked for the world champion team again to go to France in July. “Initially when you first start it is about understanding your wools and trying not to interfere with the shearers’ pattern. The handler makes the value for the farmer because what we do with it is what matters.” Oddments are anything but body wool. “Then it goes to the wool stores and has processing requirements depending on its end product such as carpets. “In a shearing shed it is teamwork — it is very different to competitions, where it is you and the shearer. Once you gain experience, you see what someone might miss, or if a shearer is in trouble, you can turn the cord off for him or her or help the presser. The presser needs to press and number the bales correctly, and the ganger is the person responsible for everything in

MERGE LIKE A ZIP Sheree will represent New Zealand in France this coming July as part of the World Championship team the shed and what the farmer requires. Depending on the market you can advise them how to make the best money because that is what we are there for at the end of the day. Some have food ready, flush toilets and clean sheds for us and this lets us know we are valued and encourages us to do our best. It is a hard job some stay in their own home town, and some will travel — I have a daughter now so don’t travel so much. Currently, we have a shortage of shearers and woolhandlers, and teams come from the UK to help us. We need our young people to get involved, it is a fantastic job, and kiwis are renowned as being hard workers. Shearing is a specialist job, and you can make really good money. “There are good days and bad, but if you go with a good attitude and are prepared to listen it can be fun. We have

the best woolhandling, and shearing practices in the world and sheep are still the backbone of our country. People will return to woollen products instead of the throwaway society we have become, and the price of wool is slowly coming up, and we look forward to positive things in the industry. “Training is coming back, and there will be lots of opportunities for farm-based work. “My mentors are my mum and dad because they had nothing, started the shearing crew, and purchased their farm. Behind every good man is a good woman. Dad would be gone all day and get in late, and mum would have home ready and was responsible for the wool handling, and you had to do it right. Their influences steered me in the right direction — they had a dream and fulfilled it.”

O

n finishing high school in the Philippines, Nick attained a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness from Xavier University. He studied a further six months to gain qualifications to enable him to go dairy farming in New Zealand. Nick’s first position was as a dairy farm assistant at AW and MA Cooper Farms at Kai Iwi near Whanganui, and two years ago he took up employment as a herd manager on Regents Park Farm. The 360ha farm, located near Bulls, milks 1,250 cows at peak with a mix of Jerseys, Friesians and crossbreeds. Last

year Nick was promoted to assistant farm manager. “We have an effective area of 360ha under irrigation and more dry land, which we use at a certain time of the year,” said Nick. He said staff ensure the cows are well hydrated during hot, dry weather. Plenty of good grass and supplements are fed to the herd during calving season. Along with turnips, kale crops and palm kernel, maize is mixed with different minerals. ADVERTORIAL

Should I take coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10. CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most essential antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness; this can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also required to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100– 200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside statins will in most cases, protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the wellresearched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. National continues to support primary sector growth by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

I enjoyed my time at National Fieldays again this year; whether you’re connected to rural New Zealand or not, you just can’t help but be inspired by the positivity that such a huge event focussed on our primary sector brings. The truth is that we’re all involved in some way and a record of almost 1,100 exhibitors can’t be wrong. Sharp As Linehaul Nearer to Farm Gateway The team at Sharp As have hit the new year running as they prepare for the 1st August 2019 when they take over the milk collection pickup for Open Country Dairy’s Wanganui Plant in Heads Road. The company entered a contract with OCD late November 2018, making a public announcement December. “It certainly felt like we were scrambling at the start with taking on something to this magnitude along with conducting everyday business with our current operations which had steadily grown over the last 12months prior to this” mentions Kylie partner to Daryl James. Latest update: April the Scania R500’s arrived into country from Sweden. Week by week, Daryl and Kylie along with some of the team, drove the trucks from Auckland to Invercargill, where they had decided to base them for the build with the task ahead. Forming a partnership with Southern Milk Transport Managing Director and OCD National Transport Manager Brett Hamilton, has been a huge win for Daryl and Kylie. Southern Milk Transport are the milk collection carriers for Awarua Open Country Dairy down in the deep south. At present Sharp As Linehaul’s fleet is made up European and American trucks, forming a relationship with Brett from SMT/OCD who we believe is a book of knowledge when it comes to the Scania product and milk collection he has been a true godsend to them, and it’s a relationship that they truly value. Given Brett’s wealth of knowledge and expertise we believed it made sense to have the tanks and new trailers built in Invercargill. Where Brett volunteered and we assigned him to project manage the builds. The tank and trailer builds are rolling off the production line as per timeframes set out.

Tanks are being manufactured by Crown Sheetmetal suppling the truck and trailers with straight barrel tanks. The new 5axle lift axle Trailers are being built by Transport Engineering Southland. Between all parties a great deal of thought and design has gone into producing what they believe will have some of the latest technology and giving them confidence that they will have some of the safest equipment on the roads, meeting the HMPV (High productivity motor vehicles) standards with safe configurations with the low center of gravity on their units, improving the static roll threshold, Daryl believes; “Our units will be well over spec in terms of the industry standards, resourcing our people with a lot less risk for our drivers and the public”. Last key part of the build, to completion, which has just landed from Denmark. Is the fit out of the latest state of the art metering technology, in order for tankers to collect the milk. July the trucks will make their journey home to have the finishing cosmetic touches with the branding of OCD tanker specs from their local supplier Display Associates. The units will be based at the Open Country Factory on Heads Road in Wanganui. The Sharp As Team are in the process of the last stages with staff recruitment. For more information you can visit their facebook page or website for the advertised position. End of July all of their new staff will participate in two full days of training, where they will go through various roles of the job, and Health n Safety. With safety being critical component to day to day life, it’s Daryl’s mission; “for all of our staff to make it home safely to their loved ones and family”. In the next month they hope to make our way around farms as well as be a part of the next Open Country Region supplier July Meeting.

Explore the great outdoors

DRIVE PHONE FREE!

The dramatic west coast beaches and unspoilt native bush make the Whanganui location perfect for tramping, fishing, hunting and wilderness explorers. The Whanganui River is the longest navigable river in New Zealand and once known as the Rhine of New Zealand. The town offers a vast array of activities for families with children of all ages. It is the first provincial town to have a tramway with twelve trams commissioned by the then Mayor Mackay around 1908. Riding Mable the number 12 tram creates a memorable experience when you visit the township. She is a fully-restored, authentic electric tram built by Boon and Co in Christchurch around 1911 and began operating in Whanganui on November 26, 1912. Kowhai Park has a miniature railway that has been a family favourite for generations. Ride a brontosaurus, check out the pirate ship, swing on an octopus, see-saw with a snake and on a hot day play in the water maze. There is laser tag among the pine trees for people of all ages to join in. The Durie Hill Elevator was built in 1919 and is sixty-six metres high. It is New Zealand’s only public underground elevator and one of only two in the world. A pedestrian tunnel leads to the elevator and at the top, the panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, Mount Ruapehu and Mount Taranaki are amazing. Next to the elevator tower is the War Memorial Tower, which, when climbed, offers an amazing

vista of the city. Virginia Lake premier outdoor garden park has the option of a 25-minute woodland walk around the lake. Spy Peter Pan’s statue and watch the birdlife, both on and around the water. The Winter Gardens is an all-year-round attraction with an adjoining Art Garden combining sculpture and garden art. Visit in the evening and see the historic Higginbottom Fountain lit up at night. Add in a children’s playground and a free bird aviary, and this makes Virginia Lake one of Whanganui’s best attractions. Bushy Park Reserve is a 100-hectare native forest sanctuary kept predator-free for native birds and is ranked one of Australasia’s ‘Top 25’ Restoration Projects. There are 3.4km of easy

all-weather walking tracks throughout the forest and a huge variety of bird life and species of trees. You can also book accommodation at the 22 room 1906 Edwardian-era homestead and enjoy a picnic and a peaceful stay. Campervans are also welcome on-site. The Bridge to Nowhere spans the Mangapurua Stream in Whanganui National Park, and travellers can enjoy breathtaking jet boat tours, stay at the unique lodge accommodation in the park and experience spectacular canoe trips to untouched parts of the river. Mountain bikers can take the much-appreciated Mountains to Sea bike experience or overnight trips and for those keen on canoeing or tramping there are various options available. People looking ahead to warmer months on the river, or wanting a unique charter experience, locals and visitors are known to enjoy the river-related experience on the Waimarie Paddle Steamer. Cruises run during the warmer months with private charter cruises available by arrangement. The paddle steamer was salvaged from the bottom of the Whanganui River where she sat for around 50 years. She was restored to her former glory and relaunched in 2000 to make her New Zealand’s only authentic coal-fired paddle steamer in operation. The cruises, together with the Waimarie Museum, make this an iconic symbol of the River City and a

significant attraction. Visit the Waimarie Centre to make bookings, purchase merchandise, and discover the 134-year old architecturally designed building where you can uncover an array of river memorabilia. The sixty-six metre high Durie Hill War Memorial Tower and underground elevator was built in 1919 and is one of only two in the world. A pedestrian tunnel leads to the elevator and at the top visitors experience panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, Mount Ruapehu and Mount Taranaki. The War Memorial Tower, when climbed, offers an even more amazing vista of the city. Visiting the Moutoa gardens gives access to the site of a Maori fishing pa. The pa later became a trading market and is named after the Battle of Moutoa Island when Whanganui River Maori defended the city against invading warriors. Historical monuments and memorials are set amongst the mature trees making this an interesting

educational place to discover more about the area. One of the most intricately and beautifully decorated churches in New Zealand is St Paul’s Anglican Memorial Church in Putiki. This unique building is adorned with fascinating Maori weavings and lattice designs, which speak of the history of the church and the area. The site dates back to 1842, and the current church dates back to 1936. Guided tours can be booked to see the building, and hear the story from local guides steeped in the knowledge of this historic treasure. The Watt fountain was built as a memorial to William Hogg Watt, the first Mayor of Whanganui. The fountain was first unveiled on September 7, 1881. It was then removed in 1906 to make way for trams, first to Cook’s Gardens and then to Queen’s Park in 1933. In 1993 the fountain was returned to its original location where it sits today in the middle of the intersection in the town.

Where students thrive Once a necessity, now a preference, students thrive on the academic, sporting, cultural, service and leadership opportunities made possible by boarding. Students will tell you that their House is more than where they stay; it quickly becomes a connection for life. With four boys’ Houses and two girls’ Houses, Whanganui Collegiate School is the leading co-educational boarding and day school in the lower North Island. “Boys and girls think, problem solve, and react differently in social situations and therefore, they learn from each other’s differences. At this school, boys and girls learn to support each other, to work together, and as a result, are well equipped for life after Collegiate — it is a coeducational world,” says Headmaster Wayne Brown. All students require quality teaching and personalised learning, whether that be boy or girl. At Collegiate, celebrating diverse learning is at the forefront of what we do, with a focus on empowering students with the academic, social and personal skills required to study and achieve. “More importantly, Whanganui Collegiate School is where families are united”, says Brown. Parents can support all their children, in the same weekend, at the same school and thus the family structure is

strengthened through the critical years of secondary schooling developing a child of promise to a young adult of great character. Learn more about Whanganui Collegiate School by joining us on August 3 for our Term Three Tour

Video to aid biosecurity A new in-flight biosecurity video will remind international visitors about the importance of protecting New Zealand from unwanted pests and diseases. Biosecurity New Zealand launched the video that will play to arriving passengers on all airlines with screen capacity. “All visitors to the country and Kiwis returning home can help protect New Zealand from harmful pests and diseases,” says the head of Biosecurity New Zealand, Roger Smith. “The new in-flight video provides a clear message about what everyone’s responsibilities are when arriving here. DAIRY WITH COMPLIANCE

Farmers take the lead on water

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

Ask most people about the most important element needed for a productive farm, and they would likely say that it’s land, or possibly sunshine for photosynthesis; farmers, however, know that it’s water. Water is the engine driving healthy pasture growth, is necessary for animal health, is used to help break down effluent, to clean and to cool in the shed and to irrigate crops. That means it’s held in high regard. The news that this is likely to be drier than average winter with lower soil moisture and river flows will already be on the radar of the custodians of the land. Farmers are, in fact, responsible for the biggest voluntary environmental improvement project of the last decade. Since the publication of the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord in 2013, a raft of proposals from this document have been implemented, covering aspects from water usage through to effluent disposal and the exclusion of livestock from watercourses on Kiwi farms. Consider the sheer amount of creeks, rivers and streams running through our rural heartlands. Now process the fact that close to 98 per cent of them have been blocked to livestock. Riparian planting is also well advanced. The Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord was developed under the oversight of the Dairy Environment Leadership Group, comprising representatives from farmers, dairy companies, central government, regional councils and the Federation of Maori Authorities. It has been a voluntary commitment by the industry. With commitments to

call 0800 436 566 or visit www.dolomite.co.nz

better nutrient management, water use, irrigation infrastructure improvements, effluent processing and more, the accord is hitting targets, which were deemed difficult at the time. There are those who are ahead and those who are behind, often because (as in the vase of a corollary new standard, the improvement of milk chiller equipment) of overworked thirdparty contractors. It’s getting done, which makes a difference on a considerable scale.

Farmers may have a question of their own after this effort. Where is the accord for urban planners and authorities to work through their environmental responsibilities in the same way?

Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

Groundbreaking pain relief A trial of a unique pain relief treatment for calves undergoing disbudding procedures has the potential to improve the welfare of millions of New Zealand calves. Disbudding is a common, but potentially painful procedure carried out by farmers, vets and technicians. Up to two million calves are disbudded in New Zealand every year, and it commonly involves the use of a hot iron to cauterise and remove horn-producing cells before they fuse and grow into horns. The groundbreaking treatment, known as Tri-Solfen, was initially developed in Australia for use in sheep and is being distributed in New Zealand by Bayer. The local anaesthetic and antiseptic topical liquid provides quick pain relief when applied to a wound, and controls and reduces the likelihood of infections and haemorrhaging. Bayer senior technical services veterinarian Dr Kirstie Inglis says the product will make a big difference to calves on Kiwi farms. “Tri-Solfen is really quite groundbreaking for New Zealand. It is the first time we have had a topical

local anaesthetic to use on disbudded calves, available in the market. “It contains two types of anaesthetic, a shorter acting one and a longer acting one — combined with adrenaline and an antiseptic. Used straight after disbudding Tri-Solfen will make a huge difference to calves at that time of year when they are young and vulnerable, and in need of the best start in life.” Independent lead researcher in the trial Dr Emma Cuttance, from VetEnt Research, says disbudding is known to be incredibly painful for calves. “We found the Tri-Solfen product to be fantastic in reducing the pain that calves were experiencing following disbudding — out to 22 hours. In some study groups, there was a 90 per cent reduction in marked pain response when compared to the control group, which is extraordinary. “We have actually got something that could positively impact the welfare of

millions of calves, and I think that is such an exciting breakthrough for animal health and something I am proud to be involved with.” In October, legislation will come into force, which, at a minimum, requires a local anaesthetic nerve block to be applied prior to the disbudding procedure. Independent vets involved in the Tri-Solfen trial concluded that using just a pre-procedural local anaesthetic nerve block alone just wasn’t enough. Tri-Solfen applied to calves immediately after disbudding had a positive effect

on their behavioural responses and pain sensitivity for at least 22 hours. Another important welfare outcome of the trial showed there were positive effects for calves that were disbudded under sedation compared with calves disbudded without sedation. “I think there really is a need for the veterinary industry to take a closer look at how much pain calves are actually in during disbudding,” says Dr Inglis. Tri-Solfen can also be used for pain relief on lambs following docking and on calves following castration.

Elegant eco-efficiency It’s funny how time can blur preconceptions and make a mockery of stereotypes. When the first hybrid vehicles hit the road, in the not so distant past, there was everything short of warfare between those who drove large sports utility vehicles and those who were early adopters of greener tech. Now, at a stroke, the last grumbles of that argument have been more than put to rest, as Range Rover enjoy great success with their own plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It’s a sublime marriage of the things, which have made the Range Rover great across the years; its off-road abilities, power, comfort and style, blended with the ability to deliver a fuel sipping 3.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, or more than 50km on electric power alone. There hasn’t been any watering down of the power on tap here. There are still close to 400 horses under the hood, with backup for the Range Rover’s lightweight engine coming from an 85kw electric motor and a low-mounted battery pack to increase stability. This large vehicle accelerates from 0-100kp/h in just 6.8 seconds, which was supercar fast not so long ago (exactly the same as a 1991 Porsche 911). Bear in mind that raw speed is not the party piece of this machine, however. For all its elegance and luxurious interior trappings, the PHEV Range Rover is all about conquering harsh conditions, and it still wades, climbs, crawls and descends hills with military aplomb. In

fact, EV only mode makes for silent, scalpel-accurate low-speed driving. Range Rover has been quietly innovating since the inception of the brand, with successive generations introducing smart ideas, which are carried on into

the future. From the idea of a folding tailgate, which forms a handy seat or bench through to modern innovations such as a phone app to pre-heat or cool the cabin, there is a lot to explore beyond the PHEV underpinnings of this

eco-conscious Range Rover. Need we even mention that the Queen drives one? This feat of engineering deserves a test drive just to see how ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘luxurious power’ can live together in harmony.

in a display, which touches on all the big names in our racing hall of fame, from the track to the rally stage and beyond. The Giltrap name has stood behind our best and fastest for more than 50 years, and this year they’re bringing together the cars which built that legacy. As if all this is not enough, there’s also tyre smoke and thrills in the Wendy’s Live Action Arena, a staggering Retro-O-Rama with quirky, vintage and cool things to buy, the outre autos of the Wild, Weird and Wacky display.
