Federated Farmers rural security spokesperson Miles Anderson is relieved farmers can apply for endorsements to use prohibited firearms for pest control

Federated Farmers is relieved that its advocacy for farmers to be able to apply for endorsements to use prohibited firearms for pest control has succeeded. A Supplementary Order Paper was introduced to the Arms Legislation bill when parliament sat on Tuesday, June 16. It allows agricultural and forestry businesses to apply for endorsements to use prohibited firearms for pest control as part of their business operations. Establishing a separate pest control company to carry out the work is no longer required. Since the prohibition of centrefire and large magazine capacity semi-automatic firearms from general ownership in New Zealand, Federated Farmers has been working with the government. “Federated Farmers has been working with the government to ensure that those farming properties with significant pest animal problems will still be able to access the pest control tools they need, while not compromising public safety,’’ said Federated Farmers rural security spokesperson, Miles Anderson.

“We would like to thank New Zealand First for their common sense approach to this matter, and the wider government, for recognising that there remains a limited need for the controlled use of these firearms in rural New Zealand.” Landowners who require prohibited firearms for pest control will be able to apply for an endorsement to carry this out as part of their existing business, in the same manner as the Department of Conservation (DOC), regional council and professional pest control staff. There is a strict vetting and qualification criteria for farmers, who will have to clearly demonstrate their suitability, and that prohibited firearms are needed to control the economic and environmental damage of problem species such as feral pigs, feral goats, deer, wallabies, rabbits, hares and Canada geese. Further changes to the Arms Legislation bill include introducing a firearms registry, tougher penalties, an independent body to oversee firearms licensing and administration, and stronger licensing controls.

Memorial bursary applications open

Horizons Regional Council has just opened applications for the Don Linklater Memorial Bursary. The Don Linklater Memorial Bursary was established to honour the contribution made to the region by the late Don Linklater, who was the Horizons’ chairman from 1989 to 2000. The bursary, valued at $3,000 a year for up to three years, aims to support students studying in areas relevant to Horizons Regional Council’s work. Students must be studying subjects such as resource management, environmental planning , and environmental engineering and modelling, with particular emphasis on river and drainage basin dynamics. Internal and extramural students are eligible. Horizons’ chair, Rachel Keedwell, says the bursary is a great way of suppor ting students while contributing to the environmental work Horizons undertakes. “These students are the future of environmental management in our region and supporting them in their study contributes to investing in the future management of our natural resources,” she said. Bursary applications typically open in March each year, however, due to the recent Covid-19 environment it has been pushed out to June. To be eligible, applicants must be New Zealand citizens or residents and plan to study full-time university study in 2020. They must also be from the Horizons region, however, may study outside of the region. Last year two students, Rebecca Hillyard and Katherine Martin were each awarded $3,000 towards their studies. Rebecca was studying towards a Master of Environmental Management at Massey University. She was aiming to use her skills to reduce the environmental impact humans have

WAY TO GO WITH WAGYU by Denise Gunn Since introducing Wagyu genetics to his Angus and dairy-cross stock, Scott Linklater has been able to process his animals earlier and decrease the number of bobby calves.

S

cott farms sheep, cattle and crops on his 300ha farm near Halcombe. He owns some of the land and leases the remainder. The farm is part of Linkfarms, which is a partnership between Scott and his parents, Ross and Marilyn. “Linkfarms is the overriding company but I have an independent farm,” said Scott. For the past 18 years, following his return from overseas, Scott has been farming. He began running all four farms under the Linkfarms banner, before buying his current property six years ago. In 2007, Scott began processing deer through First Light Venison and moved to Wagyu soon afterwards. It was First

Light’s coordinated marketing approach, linked with production, which appealed to Scott. “I knew how First Light ran in that sense,” he said. “There’s a guaranteed price with First Light, so it takes the financial risks out of it. Farming can be variable, but with this, we know the pricing will be stable. On top of that, we get paid for marble source. The higher the grade, the greater the reward as the farmer. The better job you do, the better rewards you get.” In addition to putting Wagyu over his Angus stock, Scott also runs a breeding programme with either Friesian or Kiwi cows crossed with Wagyu. He’s found the Wagyu progeny quiet to handle and generally easy to calve. Using

A Charollais sheep stud on the property sells 140 stud terminal sire rams each year

Wagyu cattle have been in New Zealand since 1994 and found to thrive on a mixture of rye and white clover, along with specialist green feed crops. “The Wagyu are good marbling animals, and we are well-rewarded for quality product coming in,” he said. “Wagyu is one of the best beef breeds, and I’ve been fortunate enough to go to the United States and see how restaurant chefs rave about our grassfed products. It’s really good seeing your product in the stores, supermarkets and restaurants overseas. It gives us good confidence that we are on the right track.”

Wagyu bulls over his dairy stock has also removed most bobby calves from the system. “Traditionally there’s a low market for bobby calves but we are now getting premium. There is a lot of wastage in the dairy industry.” Scott runs close to 100 animals of each age group, and all stock is sold through First Light. Calves are raised through to 24 months of age and processed when they reach 320kg. A Charollais sheep stud on the property sells 140 stud terminal sire rams each year. “These have the standard breeding traits of growth and meat yield. We have also had a strong focus on meat quality.” Scott said selection is based on intramuscular fat, similar to the Wagyu. “Once again, looking into the future, consumers are told to eat less red meat. So, if they are going to eat a smaller portion, it might as well be the best tasting. Hence, we are going down the track of breeding for great taste and quality.” “We generally finish between 4,000– 5,000 winter lambs.” Close to 30 deer are also farmed. The farm covers a mixture of flat to rolling country and receives an average annual rainfall of between 900– 1,200mm. Pugging problems with heavy, wet soil in winter have been minimised through grazing the larger cattle on freedraining soils. Brassica and chicory are grown as supplementary feeds. Peas, maize, winter wheat and silage are grown as cash crops. Scott and his wife Fritha have three young children, so finding an ideal work and family life balance is paramount. He is also a director of the First Light Wagyu New Zealand Producer Group. “It’s getting the name out there,” he said. “The F1 Wagyu can actually perform.” Scott said there is a preconceived idea that Wagyu are slower growing than other breeds. “With better feeding, they’ve proven that they can grow. “

YOUNG FARMER

ACHIEVES HER GOALS by Denise Gunn Former city slicker Sarah Meurk’s first taste of country life was when she moved with her family from Upper Hutt to a Linton lifestyle block.

S

arah was just 11 years old at the time, but her interaction with livestock led to paving a path in agriculture. Six years later Sarah took up study at Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre. “While I was there, I did some parttime work in a vineyard,” said Sarah. “I then went to work in Feilding at Arran Farm, before they had their A2 milk vending machine, after a season of dairy farming.”

Sarah soon realised there was much more to farming than practical skills, so she began studying towards an agricultural science degree at Massey University. That led her to work on Massey University’s farms and helping out on various research trials. “In my third year, I was asked to work full-time for a research company doing veterinary pharmaceutical work. “I had planned on studying while working, but it is still an ongoing venture.”

The 31-year-old juggles motherhood and farming Sarah took a year off farming to complete a beauty therapy course so she could freelance as a make-up artist. When she completed the course, Sarah began work as an agricultural tutor. Her work involved encouraging teenagers to become engaged in education. While attending university, Sarah joined Massey Young Farmers. On taking up the agricultural tutor position in Levin, she joined Opiki Young Farmers.

Since moving to a Hunterville lifestyle block with her husband and their young daughter, Sarah transferred to Marton Young Farmers. She is also treasurer for the Taranaki-Manawatu regional committee. The 31-year-old juggles motherhood and working part-time on the Feilding High School farm. The property runs sheep, cattle and milks 60 cows through a robotic dairy.

machinery driving and building. Jason, a qualified builder, works on the building side of the business with renovations, pole sheds, garages, decks, yards and new builds. “He grew up on the family farm and after qualifying as a builder went back to farming in Makuri. He still enjoys getting out and doing farm work, as well as some digger work,” said Sarah. “I sometimes get called in to be a labourer, but mostly I just do farm work, relief milking and do all the paperwork and accounts. Our wee block is in Hunterville, so that is our base, but we cover pretty much an hour any direction.”

Sarah was the only female to reach the Taranaki/Manawatu Young Farmer regional final last year. Setting goals is important to her. “I usually sit down at New Year’s and make a vision board. I’m also trying to grow my beauty and make-up business, and develop my social media and marketing skills for that.” Finishing her agricultural science degree is a long-term goal. “Farming is an awesome lifestyle, and I’m passionate about getting others involved,” said Sarah.

Antenatal classes help farmers by Ann van Engelen

Carmen Lett has practised as a midwife for 12 years and is offering online antenatal classes to help people in rural communities and beyond obtain childbirth education.

“I

was born in Townsville, Australia and moved to New Zealand in the 1990s with my family for my parents’ work,” says Carmen. “From a really young age, I had a fascination with babies and the birth process. My mum had Michael Odent’s picture book on birth that I loved reading. I went to Epsom Girls’ Grammar, where I had to start thinking about a career. The careers adviser recommended midwifery as it was a perfect mix of babies and birth. “I trained straight after finishing my schooling. I was one of the youngest in my year, and although I didn’t have a lot of life experience, I was certain it was a perfect choice. I married and

had been a midwife for four years when Aidan and I had our daughter Rosie. My clinical skills remained the same, but I gained empathy. I am not a better midwife but a different midwife. When a client says it hurts, I know it does. Rosie was breach and got stuck so needed an emergency cesarean. “I returned to working part-time at Middlemore after four months. Once Rosie was sleeping through, I did night shifts and have done them for the past seven years. “We now also have three sons, including twins. Asher and Jude were induced, one needed the suction cup, and one was born normal, and our last, Taj, was a normal birth. I wanted home

births but didn’t get any because the labours didn’t go as planned. “We moved to Tauranga and people couldn’t attend antenatal classes for various reasons, including living on farms, shift workers and truck drivers. “In hospital ladies would ask about feeding and changing diapers. I thought if they don’t know now, they will struggle at home, so I launched Hatchedantenatal. co.nz to provide online classes. “The programme costs $89 for unlimited access for six months. I recommend starting in the second trimester so you can revisit the content if there are issues after birth, like sleeping or feeding. “I give researched non-biased advice. I don’t want anyone to walk away, thinking there is only one way to do things. I interview a car seat technician, a sleep consultant, touch on mental health, how to bath, swaddle and put a nappy on to name a few topics. “Pregnancy and childbirth should be a good experience, but that’s not always the way. Being informed if you encounter things that don’t feel right is a good start because midwives don’t always have the time to discuss every concern. I now work independently and have about 40 patients. “It is very important to have care throughout a pregnancy. There is very little that I have not seen from normal lovely births to very high risk and sad situations. I want to reach the farming communities as they often can’t be away from the farm or don’t want to go to classes for personal reasons.

1813 STATE HIGHWAY 1 • MARTON

“I recommend things like feeding on demand within reason and how to increase milk supply by eating well-balanced diets with foods like oats and taking herbal supplements such as fenugreek or blessed thistle and drinking lots of water. “We are not anti-formula, but the more formula used the less breast milk is made. “Some people go by the book and still have a terrible milk supply. You need support in every decision you make, including bottle or breastfeeding. Mothers shouldn’t feel bad having an epidural for pain relief either. I provide good, researched information with the aim of presenting a nonbiased view. “I also recommend visiting a GP if things don’t feel right within yourself, whether physically, mentally or emotionally. “There are awesome support networks to utilise, and I have Facebook support groups that I link people to. One is a public forum, and one is a private group, which has more content with questions and answers. “I am here to help, ultimately it is about people knowing there is support no matter what they need. You don’t have to do it completely on your own. “Babies are my favourite thing in the world, and I want parents to feel supported and not judged

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: June

Do we want to be told what to do all the time? The new Forests (Regulation of Log Traders and Forestry Advisors) Amendment Bill has caught our industry by surprise. It was introduced by Government on the 14th of May with all submissions to be done within 4 working days to the Environment Select Committee. There was a scramble across our sector all over New Zealand to make submissions within the extremely short time frame and many industry leaders are fuming at the vague wording of the Bill which would have one part of our sector effectively subsidizing the other while creating a largely arbitrary registration process that mimics the one currently run by the New Zealand Institute of Forestry. Currently around 40% of the log harvest in New Zealand is off small forest owner blocks and they are the ones who will wear the extensive cost of the proposed regulations. Many small

forest owners may find that this is the final straw for gaining any profits from their crop or might find that their tending decisions for their trees over the last 20 years now mean it is not suitable for harvest to suit a local market. Many will simply lock the gate and throw away the key! The worst part of this heavy-handed regulation is the precedent it will set for other primary industry activities. One great thing about our free trade economy in New Zealand is the ability to make decisions on when and where you sell your produce. We all like to make our own choices with our land and regulations like this only reduce them. To find out more visit: www.mpi.govt.nz/ law-and-policy/legislation/registration-of-logtraders-and-forestry-advisers/

Want to have your say?

“Fred the Forester” comes to town Our Wood Council has been proud to launch a new children’s book this year. “Fred the Forester Discovers — Where do the Pine Trees Go?” is directed at 5–10 year old students and explores through a child’s eyes, the journey of trees and then logs from his home, first to a sawmill and then to local housing. The emphasis in this story is on families managing their own forests, local uses of timber and introduces climate change and environmental themes that will be explored further in later editions. There are activities in the back of the book that teachers can photocopy, or children can complete in the book. A Forestry Word Find, Forestry Maze and maps of New Zealand showing where our forests and sawmills are, along with colouring in pictures, gives children the opportunity to understand the breath of forestry and what products logs are turned into. Both photos taken at sites around the Wairarapa and illustrations are used to provide a sense of reality to the scenes and depict actual machinery in use.

Then visit www.dontripupourroots.com and use the submission letter to let our MPs know what you think.

There are a further four books in the series under development to describe climate change, environmental benefits of forestry, new technology in harvesting, and who has the coolest job in forestry. Our book will be available in bookstores nationwide, or visit www.fredtheforester.co.nz to purchase books online.

Job opportunities grow in forestry As part of a forestry industry frontline recruitment campaign, this month we are featuring the machine harvesting jobs that are available in our sector because in recent years there has been huge growth and investment by our contractors in using these million-dollar machines for harvesting and processing trees out in our forests. Machines have slowly replaced staff on chainsaws and has meant increased safety across the industry as well as huge leaps in productivity. There is ongoing research at our universities and the industry that is constantly pushing the limits of what these machines can do. It has meant a large shift in the skill set required for anyone working in harvesting. Instead of chainsaw skills, there is a need for careful driving dexterities, which many of our young entrants into the industry can boast to have after years of PlayStation or Xbox! Turns out mum was wrong, you can train for a job while you sit in the bedroom! There is training available to learn how to drive these expensive machines at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in Rotorua where they hold Mechanised Harvesting courses and learn on simulators before getting into the real thing, or with a Forestry Apprenticeship in Mechanised Processing where you can train on the job with Competenz. Want to drive a million-dollar machine and learn valuable skills that could take you around the world?

Can I improve my Joints? (Part two) by John Arts

Last edition, I mentioned a client who went from having very sore knees to know being able to move with much greater freedom. We looked at the first lesson we can learn from this. All healing comes from specific healing systems in our body. We also saw that these healing systems could be restricted or even dormant if our diets tip the scales in the wrong direction. The second lesson is very important. The gap between healing and continued disease is often much less than you think. What surprised my client is how little he actually had to do to activate the healing capacity in his knees. The first step is to slow or stop unwanted inflammation. That does mean you need to think about foods, but in most cases, it is simply substituting one food for another. It can be swapping the inflammatory high omega-6 cooking oils for olive oil and adding fish oil supplements. The rest of his programme was not difficult. I started him on an initially high dose of my joint formula. That meant that initially, he was getting 1,600mg of high grade (small molecular size) chondroitin sulphate with 1,600 mg

of glucosamine sulphate and 400mg of a 95% bioactive curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Chondroitin is the most important as it directly improves the health of cells that repair and maintain cartilage. Curcumin targeted inflammation while glucosamine helped with joint function. It sounds complex, but all this meant was after breakfast, taking two of the joint capsules and three fish oil then repeating this in the evening. Yes, there is the discipline of having to take the supplements and, of course, fitting these into his budget. The results meant he has much less pain and more mobility. Innovations need breathing space by Andy Bryenton

With the nation’s largest collective agricultural event on hold, thanks to coronavirus precautions, a whole year of farming and agricultural innovation have not just disappeared. As in other nations, where the shows are even bigger and the crowds even larger, those stories and advancements need a place to shine. We’ve put together this ‘Field Day in your mailbox’ for the same reason patrons of the two biggest similar events in the world (Germany’s Agritechnica and the USA’s Minnesota State Fair)

have also turned to other media to get their point across. With a widespread customer base hungry for any innovation that can pare dollars off the cost of farming, or add bulk to the bottom line,

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

both of these shows are postponed until 2021. However, in a two-edged proposition, tech, which was first floated at November 2019’s Agritechnica is now coming on-stream in New Zealand. The usually jam-packed Minnesota show’s sellers of giant ag machinery have taken to the internet and print media to tout their latest offerings. New Zealand knows how to put on a field day, but the prestige of winning an engineering award at Agritechnica is the ‘holy grail’ of machinery and tractor designers, similar to the Tokyo or Geneva auto show for carmakers. Standout machines that have won innovation awards at the 2019 event were set to land in the Waikato this month. They are still there, at dealerships, and often just require a phone call to arrange a test drive. Similarly, the Minnesota State Fair is regarded as the biggest on Earth. Numbers exceeding the population of the South Island will pass through

its gates each year, and it’s the USA’s showcase of the biggest in harvesters, tractors and implements. This year, a sense of personal safety has seen it closed, amid mixed messages on Covid from the US government. “If there’s no fair this year, it’s because they love us and want to see Everyone next year,” said an associate of fair manager Jerry Hammer. “He’s right. “That’s the heart of the matter. We want to see you all for many years to come, when we can celebrate in true state fair style.” How we can celebrate in style is to celebrate the spirit of a proper field day. That means checking out all the latest and greatest in farming advancements here on paper, then supporting the local economy by calling the appropriate dealerships and putting them to work. This way, 2021 will be a field day for us all, as our rural sector shows the rest of the economy the way forward.

James and Rosie Pelham are equity partners of Acer Properties in Putaruru. They are using Allflex collars to increase submission and conception rates, along with a move to full artificial breeding (AB). The couple purchased an Allflex monitoring system in August 2018, and they have never looked back. “We chose Allflex over competitors because it was proven technology and we preferred the software,” said James. The goal was to take the time commitment off James and Rosie and use the reliability of the collars to identify cows that are on heat. It’s also given them the confidence to use short gestation semen and tighten up their calving pattern. The collars have also been a valuable investment for Airport Farm owners Ed and Melissa Whiting in Stratford. They started with just the collars and have now installed an Allflex ‘Intelligate’ drafting gate to complete the system. “We have significantly improved

our cow health and calving is a breeze,” Ed says. They have climbed from 420kg/MS a cow to 545kg/MS by focussing on the cows that ruminate well and the ones that are healthy. However, the biggest change has been regarding people. “Mating is probably the easiest time of the year now. “Anyone can be milking, and the cows on heat are ready and waiting, all drafted out automatically by the Allflex gate.” Both farms no longer tail paint and would recommend the system to other farmers. They believe the savings around mating and improvements in milk production alone give the system a strong return on investment. “Allflex is a great company to deal with. We like working with them, they are always available with great support, and we feel like a customer.” For more information about Allflex monitoring systems, visit thegamechanger.farm.

EDUCATION Training and apprenticeships The government has made it easier for New Zealanders who want to train in industries where demand is expected to grow as the country recovers from Covid-19. The Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund will pay costs of learners of all ages to undertake vocational education and training. The fund will target support for areas of study and training that will give learners better employment prospects as New Zealand recovers from Covid-19. “The fund, announced as part of Budget 2020, will encourage and support New Zealanders to undertake vocational education and training in these high-demand industries,” said Education Minister Chris Hipkins. “We know as a result of Covid-19, many New Zealanders will be looking to retrain, and employers in key sectors will need more skilled people. We are working hard to connect the two sides of the equation by making this process as simple and practical as possible. “It is designed not just for school leavers but for people in a range of circumstances and stages of their lives. That means we have removed costs for learners, apprentices or employers — for the next two and a half years, are

targeting courses and programmes that are more likely to lead to jobs. We will also be deliberate in promoting vocational education for all ages. “Every course is different and the cost for learners at tertiary providers, industry trainees and apprentices vary, but in many cases, they will save between $2,500 and $6,500 a year. “Apprentices and learners whose courses started earlier in the year but continue beyond July 1 will be eligible for a partial refund. Circumstances dictate the need to move fast. Starting on July 1, and for the rest of 2020, we have initially targeted vocational programmes in the following areas: Primar y industries, including agriculture, horticulture and viticulture, fisheries including aquaculture and forestry. Construction, including building, plumbing, and civil engineering. Community support, including youth work, care for elderly, counselling and community health, including

mental health and addiction support. Manufacturing and mechanical engineering and technology. Electrical engineering and road transport such

Maths and English can easily get on top of children at school. However, our qualified tutors make life so much easier for them by making sure they are working on the stuff they need to know. As an old saying goes — ‘you can’t build a roof before the foundations’. That is so true for learning. If a student misses something early on in their education, a wise tutor goes back and fills in the missing parts to make sure what they are learning at school makes sense. The individualised nature of our programme gives each student the opportunity to finally grasp challenging concepts at their own pace. Ally Lyons, manager of our Palmerston North branch and tutor, has 11 years’ experience tailoring student’s learning experiences and delivering excellent educational outcomes. She would love to chat with you about your child’s needs. She is a fabulous tutor and runs a wonderful centre. Whether it be online, or in our centre in Palmerston North, students will enjoy

EDUCATION ADVERTORIAL

A values-based education Our world is in a continual state of change and now more than ever the decisions we make, the way we lead, the influence we impart on our world must be governed by a strongly ingrained set of values to reflect and guide us in challenging situations or moments of doubt. One of the purposes of education is to prepare students to thrive for the future — what may now seem like an uncertain future. The purpose of educators is to guide our young people to develop the skills to thrive, give them the time and tools to discover a direction and the ability to learn and adapt from their experiences. At Whanganui Collegiate School we develop the skill of building meaningful, trust-based relationships, the skill of effective conversations, of proactive wellbeing, of managing minds and the essential skill of taking 100% ownership for who they are, the decisions they make and the behaviour they choose — accountability and responsibility must go hand in glove. We give our students the opportunity to practise these skills in a safe environment, supported in their learning by teaching and pastoral staff. Today’s students

are the next generation of business, political and community leaders. It is our responsibility to shape the way in which they understand, prepare for and

respond to the world’s challenges both now and in the future. Join us on one of our tour days or book a personalised tour to come and

Learning, Achieving, Celebrating Together At Whanganui Collegiate School, gender unites us.

Our students become brothers and sisters who learn, achieve and celebrate together. Our students develop the tolerance, resilience, and understanding that is required to succeed in life.

The history of many Kiwi towns and cities turns up a treasure trove of brave, resourceful and forward-thinking characters who defined the places where they lived. In the case of Whanganui, there’s an abundance of founding figures who shaped the municipality and put it on the map. Despite the gender imbalance that was the norm in New Zealand’s early days, many of those from Whanganui were women, excelling in fields which were traditionally the roles of men at the time. One of the earliest was Suzanne Aubert, otherwise known as Sister Mary Joseph, a colonial-era Catholic religious leader of great compassion and determination. She spoke English and French fluently and learned Te Reo Maori as well as traditional Maori medicine lore to help heal the sick, founding hospitals and orphanages in the 1880s. At a time when the clergy was absolutely dominated by male bishops and

In 2010, the process was begun to officially declare her a saint, on a par with Mother Teresa. No less courageous was Iriaka Ratana, the first woman to represent Maori in our parliament. She succeeded her husband to win with Labour in 1949, despite protests from not only the straitlaced men of the political right-wing, but also some within the Maori community who opposed her ambitions. An early campaigner for modern concerns such as healthier homes and education for the economically disadvantaged, she held her electorate for 20 years straight. Out of politics but in the pilot’s seat; Jane Winstone was New Zealand’s youngest female solo pilot at the age of 16, flying alongside Jean Batten and helping open Whanganui airfield. Not content to sit on the sidelines during the second world war, Winstone not only married an RAF fighter pilot, she also became one of the small number of female pilots who flew for the Allies against the Nazis. Denied a front line combat role, she specialised in work for the air transport auxiliary, ferrying high-value passengers to meetings and missions. Tragically, she was killed in

From pioneers in their fields like these to modern heroes such as Harriet and Kate Austin (who rowed the Mediterranean Sea for charity in 2017), Whanganui has a long heritage of producing fearless female leaders as well as noteworthy men.

Tree service spreads its branches Beaver Tree Service has been established for more than 50 years in Christchurch and extended business to the North Island in November 2017. Now located in Wellington, Kapiti Coast District, Horowhenua District, Manawatu and Whanganui Districts (and everywhere in between), we would be happy to help you with your treerelated needs. Beaver Tree Service has the expertise and specialised equipment to remove dead, unwanted or unsafe trees in a way that won’t damage nearby gardens or property. Our professional work crews will complete your job safely and in accordance with the highest internationally accepted Arboricultural Industry Standards. Bryce Robb, Mary Cameron and the team at Beaver

S

o often I turn up to a property and the trees have been attacked by someone, with little to no knowledge of the needs of the tree. Unfortunately, this can severely decrease the life expectancy of the trees. Tree pruning is both an art and a science. An arborist’s job is to assess trees on their individual merit and determine what approach is needed for each tree. The art of pruning means an arborist can improve a tree’s aesthetics, whilst making the tree safe and manageable. When on a job, there are occasions where I do advocate that a tree needs removing, either because it has been pruned poorly in the past, or the tree would need severe pruning to reach the owners desired outcome.

Tree Service work really hard on customer service. “We want to make sure people are happy with the work being completed. Our focus is on offering excellent workmanship and unprecedented service to each and every client.” Arborists specialise in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care and advice. Whether you need a difficult tree removed, ornamental pruning, thinning, hedge trimming or stump grinding, Beaver Tree Service has the arborists to handle your job.

The Art of the Arborist

and the rest is ornamental pruning of amenity trees and residential work, reducing trees and allowing light and shape into trees. My favourite clients are the ones that ask me if it were my garden, what would I do to the trees. This gives me the freedom to immerse myself in the garden and get the best result for the client. Consulting an arborist or tree surgeon and investing in your trees can add value to a property, not to mention enjoyment to the owner. Alternatively, trees that are poorly looked after could have the potential to become a liability for the owner. Bryce Robb is Director/Head Arborist of Beaver Tree Service

The science behind tree pruning draws on knowledge, experience and expertise to ensure that tree health remains a top priority. After 25 years in the industry, I know what trees need, how they grow and how to make properties feel more spacious and open by thinning out the trees. We are specialists in difficult tree removal; tight places where you can’t take trucks or cranes. Fifty percent of our arborist work is doing tricky removals

WINTER FOCUS Winter can’t beat the prepared by Andy Bryenton

Winter’s wild weather is anything but predictable. After centuries of mild Decembers, during which a white Christmas in the south of England was seen as cheerful rather than chilling, the winter of 1962 came down like a hammer, setting records in cold not seen since the days of Isaac Newton. They were driving cars on the Thames at Oxford. Similar scenes have not been seen since, but if the incredulous English had asked a Kiwi, we’d have some even more hair-raising stories to tell about sudden changes in the weather. We live in an island nation surrounded by some of the most savage seas in the world, and when a storm decides to hit, it hits with full force. Sometimes, this means winter gales and floods, which the stoical rural community has learned

to cope with, in a typically New Zealand fashion. Despite the community efforts and shared adversity, it’s still best to be individually prepared for the worst each year. Civil Defence is still amazed by the number of people who don’t have basic plans in action to deal with natural disasters, even after a decade of everything from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions and floods. Admittedly, rural

people score much more highly when it comes to stashing away essentials such as canned goods, clean water and the means to create light and warmth. However, there are other things, which those who have lived through the worst of winter’s assaults will say you don’t think of until the problem arises. For those in areas far from so-called civilisation, these include generators and fuel, chainsaws for cutting firewood to heat water, larger than usual stocks of necessary medicines, CB radios to communicate with civil authorities when phone coverage may be down, and,

importantly, plans on how to evacuate to a central township if necessary. At this time of year, when many people are reassessing their insurance, it’s a good time, too, to make a plan for the safety and survival of you and your family, should this winter prove to be worse than anticipated. As any general will tell you, even a well-equipped army is nothing but a bunch of problems waiting to happen without a solid plan. It’s worth talking about and setting supplies aside for, just in case. Visit civildefence.govt. nz for practical tips on planning to get through.

Dedicated to provide best value For more than 130 years, New Zealand Farmers Livestock (NZFL) has worked within the agricultural industry, gaining a solid, trusted reputation with its clients. The company’s strengths lie with its team of experienced livestock agents working to get the best value for clients’ stock. A personalised solution, along with attention to detail, is provided to each individual client. Sales are conducted via the NZFL website, paddock sales or through the saleyard network. A network of more than 100 staff throughout the country are employed by Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

NZFL, including a dedicated team of nine agents in the Manawatu, each offering professional advice and guidance. A mixture of older experienced agents with a deep understanding of farming and the livestock industry, work alongside younger, enthusiastic team members from all types of farming backgrounds. The regional manager, Malcolm Combes, has more than 30 years experience in the industry. As a New Zealand-owned subsidiary of Allied Farmers, NZFL ensures clients get the best support possible for all their livestock requirements. It includes sales and purchases contracting, MINDA and NAIT support, on-farm auctions and saleyard coordination. NZFL’s MyLiveStock digital platform was recently upgraded with the addition of the live online capability to support a range of real livestock auctions run either in saleyards or on-farm. It features real-time video footage, which replicates the saleyard experience, enabling farmers from across the country to bid in real-time. NZFL general manager, Bill Sweeney, said it’s a great concept, which will open livestock trading up to all farmers. “We have been working on this for some

time, but the urgency ramped up when we went into the Covid-19 lockdown. We have literally worked night and day to bring this to the market as soon as a date for level three was announced. “The new platform is a first for New Zealand. Until now, dairy and beef farmers have had limited ability to sell livestock online, but the livestream auction format that we launched shortly after level three became operative complemented the traditional saleyard auction and on-farm sale format.”

NZFL regional manager Manawatu, Malcolm Coombes, said the new platform supported and enhanced their agents’ ability to deliver superior service to their farmer clients. NZFL is now running a variety of sales direct via MyLiveStock.co.nz weekly. The Rongotea sale will live-stream every week and be available for online bidding via MyLiveStock. Alternative to brand X by Andy Bryenton

It would seem like a slivered razor of a market niche, small enough to cram in a credit card sideways and twist. However, the luxury ute is big business, as people come to demand more from their average workhorse. Today, simply lugging a big load and handling like a car will only get you to the velvet rope, not past the bouncer. drive delivered by none other than Aussie car wizards Walkinshaw. That’s right. The ones who did the business on all those classic Bathurst smashing super V8s. Now, it must be said that the Ram, even in its smallest Laramie form, is not subtle. It’s a big, bone-crushing handshake from a good ‘ol blue-collar bruiser. It wears that extra size and power with deceptive ease. Sure, it won’t win any parallel parking competitions against a Micra, but it will do what a big pickup should, which is take thing A to point B, no matter how heavy or far. Original Rams were used to pioneer oilfields in the UAE; the king there loves them so much he commissioned a working model of one, four storeys tall. Then there’s the thrill of that big Hemi, an engine with a pedigree that spans the Dukes’ General Lee and the Challenger from Vanishing Point. Classic stuff. The best part? Exclusivity. It is not the truck for everyone, which means you’ll have the ultimate hard to find luxury in the modern ute market — the ability to stand far, far out in the crowd.

It shows in the bowing out of one of my personal favourites, the X-Class Mercedes ute. Sure, it was a Navara with added panache and style, but is that such a bad thing? Customers thought it wasn’t worth S-Class money, and it’s gone from the lineup sooner than anticipated, leaving those who want a ‘statement’ ute spoiled for choice. There is a way, though, to have a huge, Obelix the Gaul sized slice of cake and eat it too. We’re talking about the Ram, the all-American, aircraft carrier sized truck, which eschews the title of ‘ute’ at all. The marketing says it eats them for breakfast, and with gigantic air intakes like those on its slab-faced front, this could actually be a literal warning. It’s truly a feast of superlatives. Longer, wider and able to carry a chopped-up ute of most other brands in the back, the Ram packs a 5.7 litre Hemi V8, like a true muscle car. It’s the stablemate of insane, snarling beasts like the Dodge Viper and Demon, and the frankly unhinged Tomahawk, which looks like something Batman would order, then be too afraid to ride.
