Dame Valerie Adams prepares to throw a cowpat during the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games

“Our first two years in Queenstown were fantastic but the welcome we’ve received here in the agri-heartland of New Zealand has been phenomenal,” he said. “I feel as though the games have found their spiritual home.” The games kicked off on March 10 with the ‘Running of the Wools’ as hundreds of locally bred sheep were shepherded through Feilding’s town centre. Olympians Dame Valerie Adams and Mahe Drysdale made guest appearances at the games. The pair competed as wild card entries in the New Zealand Gumboot Throwing Championship. Dame Valerie comfortably took the women’s title with a throw of 34.38 metres, beating Bulls local Charlotte Symes into second place by five metres. She finished just short of the national record of 34.45 metres set at the 2016 Rural Games by Kristin Churchward of Taihape. Kristin finished third in this year’s contest. Dame Valerie also took part in the cowpat tossing competition. In the men’s section, Mahe finished an uncharacteristic last place. The event was won by James Kellow of Whanganui

with a throw of 42.24 metres. James just edged reigning champion, Olympic decathlete Brent Newdick into second place. Brent’s national record of 44.97 metres, set in 2015, still stands. The Kiwis proved too strong for the Aussie team in the ANZAXE TransTasman Wood Chopping Championship. Taranaki axeman Shane Jordan retained the overall title from Australian Kody Steers in second place. After two consecutive wins in the New Zealand Speed Fencing Championships, defending champion Matt Jones from Levin settled for second place behind Hawke’s Bay’s Tony Bouskill. The ten best shearers in the country, including the current and previous world champions Johnny Kirkpatrick and Rowland Smith, were whittled down to a thrilling two-sheep final of Dion King (Napier) and Jimmy Samuels (Marton). Dion led throughout to take a narrow win. Sheep dog trials returned to the games this year. Mixed four-person teams of the best dog handlers from Manawatu and Wairarapa competed in the main events area with the local team of Merv Williams, Kathryn Oliver, Don White and Tim Stevenson taking the win.

Feedback encouraged on Horizons’ annual plan

March 2017

Our Pole Sheds are awesome!!!

Horizons Regional Council’s proposed Annual Plan has been released with community feedback invited on a few key changes for 2017–18. Horizons 2015–25 Long-Term Plan (LTP) sets out how the council plan on managing the region’s natural resources for the next 10 years. Each year, through an Annual Plan process, council determines their identified work programme for the next 12 months and proposes what rate contribution is required to cover the delivery costs. Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon said that while the proposed 2017–18 Annual Plan (year three of the LTP) remains relatively unchanged, council has identified a need to increase expenditure for some areas. “In 2015 our LTP proposed a 4.49 per cent increase for year three. Council has worked hard to keep this down to a 4.37 per cent average rate increase for 2017–18. This lower than proposed rate increase has also been helped by ongoing low interest rates on loans, and keeping our Emergency Insurance Reserves at their current level,” he said. The key areas Horizons would like to consult the community on are river management, strategy and policy, biosecurity and biodiversity, transport, and managing natural resources. The proposed changes for each of these are outlined in Horizons’ consultation document, with copies

delivered to every letterbox in the region. It is also available on the Current Consultation page of Horizons’ website. “River management has a number of proposed projects for many of our region’s schemes, including management of our dam infrastructures, and extensions of the City Reach and Rural Upgrade flood protection projects in the Manawatu,” said Mr Gordon. “Following the June 2015 floods, council has also recognised a need to develop a numerical/computer model which will provide more robust solutions to current flood protection and land drainage service levels. This will require an additional expenditure of $100,000 intended to be split between the Manawatu Drainage Bruce Gordon — Horizons Regional Council chairman and Lower Manawatu Schemes, with a $20,000 general increase in demand for pest enquiries rate contribution.” and staggering planned public transport Other areas of consultation include service changes. GROWING GREAT GRASS BY DENISE GUNN Since starting out growing and processing grass on his Opiki farm in 2002, Perry Moleta is now producing top quality feed supplements through his business, Phoenix Park Feed, for customers all across the North Island.

mostly potatoes. Perry’s father, Tony, grew potatoes for at least 50 years and supplied all the North Island markets. During its peak in the 1980s, the farm had 200 hectares in potatoes. Tony was also formerly a chairman of the New Zealand Potato Growers Federation. Perry is the third generation of the family on the farm. Tony is now semi-retired but is partowner of Phoenix Park Feed alongside Perry. Perry manages the business. With around 100 hectares of grass, Perry can cut 12 months of the year. “Now we grow mostly grass all year round, cutting when grass is at optimum height, and we can bale any month of

around 500 square bales annually now. “The demand is much higher for round bales these days and my customers want the bales rotor-cut so the bales break-up easily when put into a feedout wagon. “Over the years I’ve made bales in every month of the year, even in the winter time, if demand is there to keep my clients happy.” Bales are delivered anywhere in the North Island. Current demand comes mostly from farmers between Taupo and Auckland, and on the east coast. “The logistics are not a problem,” said Perry. “Shannon Bulk Haulage has been a big part of servicing us for a long time and works well with my customers. “It is really important to deliver bales when it fits in with the customer, delivering the loads around their milking times.” Perry used to grow many high sugar grasses which do well during winter and spring. Now he is changing grass species to bring more clovers into the mix.He said this enables him to cut back on nitrogen in his fertiliser application. “Due to the total removal, like growing a crop, you need to keep replacing what you take out of the soil.” Spray is rarely required except for herbicide on the lucerne crop, once a year in winter when it is dormant. Perry usually cuts around four to five times a year on all paddocks, depending on the season and the heat units. “You need a good mix of sun and rain,” he said. “This season has been more rain than sun, which has made it challenging to keep up with the grass growth.” He said there hasn’t been enough sun so far this summer to make a lot of hay.

“February is normally a good month to make hay in Opiki.” Perry has one full-time employee and uses a family member to help when the season is busy. “You can get a lot done in a day when you organise it properly and when the weather is good.” Perry strives to make improvements to the business each year. He is also committed to continuing to meet customer requirements and supplying the highest quality product. “I hope to keep supplying supplements for the dairy industry,” he said. “I think it’s got a great future.”

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

stock, and his dogs were comfortably housed and well fed. I cannot put a value on his influence.” Anna spent every August school holiday riding a lambing beat with her uncle, saying she was going to be a land girl when she grew up, and at 17 years old she left home to start her career working on the land. “My love for horses was the main reason farm life was so attractive but after training my first dog Rod, a Heading pup, I was totally hooked on rearing and training working dogs.” Anna mated Rod to her Heading bitch, Patricia, and that first litter was the beginning of a lifelong passion for breeding sheepdogs. “Back in those days it was a definite handicap being a woman in the sheep farming industry, however I shepherded for 25 years before trying my hand at other things, but I kept my bitches, bred the odd litter, trained a few pups and helped friends on their farms from time to time.” She also started writing columns for farming publications about the care and training of working farm dogs, and due to the popularity of the columns, Anna wondered if a more hands-on and personal approach would work, hence the Teaching People Dog Training clinics evolved. In the eight years she has been holding the clinics, Anna has presented 43 to date, from as far north as Wellsford to the far south of Invercargill. “I don’t travel as much as I used to and only go to the odd central location now,” she said. “I limit the numbers to 35 people because it is important that everyone is able to hear and see clearly. “Attendees don’t bring their dogs to the clinics, there is a lot to cover and it is vital dog owners completely understand why and when they do things. Trainers and dogs need to work at their own pace.”

Anna teaches skills for a dog to have an all-round ability for day-to-day stock work and other skills that she finds invaluable

Everyone receives a copy of the booklet she wrote; it is a reminder outlining all the important points covered that day, freeing people to focus and not worry about taking notes. “We go through everything that I do to train a dog to have an all-round ability for day-to-day stock work. I demonstrate the basic ‘must have, can’t live without’ commands that include a recall, stop, right and left mob sides — used when working close to stock. “I also cover other skills that I have found invaluable, like to calmly walk up to within an inch of a sheep’s nose — this gives dogs the confidence to get close and to not be afraid, as well as not rushing in and biting at every opportunity. Stock respect confident dogs.” ‘Careful’ is a command Anna uses to go from a gallop to a trot, from trot to walk, to a very slow walk — saving the stop command for stopping only. She says most people overuse a dog’s stop. “I also explain how I teach a dog ‘casting sides’ and how to ‘run’ a fenceline, which is really handy in both small and large paddocks and invaluable for

teaching a dog ‘distance’. It is a great confidence booster for training a dog to run ‘blind’ when he can’t see any stock.” “For those who attend my clinics I guarantee they will go away inspired and with a few new dog training tricks, as well as a greater understanding of their dogs.” The next clinics will be in Feilding on March 26, Wellsford on April 2, Morrinsville on April 5 and Taupo on April 9. Cost is $100 per person and booking is essential as places are limited. For more information go to annaholland. co.nz or phone 06 212 4848.

“The Welsh Black have a good reputation for being hardy and providing high quality meat and milk. Bruce and I started using the bulls to tidy up after AI for our dairy herd. They seem to be getting more popular and we sell the bulls to dairy farmers. “They are average sized cattle, about the same as a short horn — not great big huge things, but definitely not miniatures. They used to be dual purpose but with the increase of performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.” Shirley says they grow well and the stock handle all weather and are versatile for grazing hard country and land with rough feed, and they are a good size for lifestyle block owners. The meat has good flavour with nice marbling. “The cattle are bred all around the country and there is a polled strain as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.” Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46

to understand. It is essential that farming recognises and understands the importance of micro-organisms and their ability to transfer natural minerals into a plant available form; locking those minerals into the humus they produce to stop the minerals from leaching. This humus also stores water, increasing water retention quality in the soil and on your farm. Among all the different soil organisms, bacteria and fungi are especially important for soil health and in particular mycorrhizal fungi, which interact with 80% of plant species. Mycorrhizal fungi have many roles, such as decomposing organic matter, facilitating nutrient cycles, storage of carbon, building soil structure and protecting plants. The network of mycorrhizal strands extends the capacity of the plants roots and connects plants to one another. Understanding the benefits of these fungi will greatly improve the productivity and the health of soil. Today’s soil tests only identify the ‘soluble nutrients’ that are readily available to the plants in the short term. Beyond these soluble nutrients there is a huge natural resource of nutrients in the soil and these are made available to the plants through mycorrhizal fungi and other microorganisms. This is the natural system that has operated on the planet for 460 million years. One hundred years of chemical production is not only causing damage to farming soils and the environment, but is also causing health problems within plants, animals and people; sickness is rife.

Proven in the field! Since 1995 we’ve specialised in producing multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers that get results!

Plants grown as crops are susceptible to all manner of pests and disease and when pesticides are used the plants are coated in toxic sprays whereby they cannot develop their own natural immunity; in a live, living, multi-mineral, microbial-rich soil the plant has all the necessary equipment to protect itself. In a chemical programme the plants are weak and continually need more chemical inputs, which is what the ‘chemical-treadmill’ is all about — these chemical sprays are going into the food chain. What! According to Patrick Holden, CEO of Sustainable Food Trust: “We are locked into a cycle of ever-increasing industrial farming based on a chemical mindset and a reductionist approach and we need to break free of it.” Agrissentials have the ultimate products to keep your farm, orchard, vineyard, market garden, etc, in top condition, which gives you the opportunity to not only leave the chemical age, but also to have the opportunity to become fully certified organic and increase your income. Break the chemical chain today and start working with Agrissentials and Mother Nature for a healthier, happier, brighter future and a clean, green environment. Let’s do it! Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part two: I was recently contacted by someone with osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and hips. After detailed analysis we made some changes to her diet and supplement programme. She was taking a supplement which combined fish oil and various antioxidants. While this product had many beneficial ingredients, the amount of active omega-3 was lower than I recommend. We added my stabilised fish oil at 6,000mg daily and higher doses of my chondroitin/glucosamine/ curcumin supplement. The results have been excellent. Her joints have much improved and she is especially thrilled with her feet, as these were starting to cause real problems. The key to improved joint health is being prepared to experiment and use a process of elimination. In this case she was taking omega-3 — we just changed the doses. She was taking a joint supplement — what we did was to use different doses and combinations. There are many diet changes that can help arthritis. By far the most

important are fats. Some fats are inflammatory and worsen arthritis. Some are anti-inflammatory and reduce the inflammatory part of arthritis. Others are relatively neutral. Animal fats are high in arachidonic acid which increases inflammatory eicosanoids and tend to push the body to an inflammatory state. This is especially true for grain-fed meat and dairy. Fortunately our predominantly grass-fed meat and dairy has a more neutral impact on inflammation. As a rule I would use lean meat cuts and moderate dairy fats. Next time we look at omega-3 and 6 and see the importance of maintaining a low ratio of omega-6 to 3. If you have arthritis you should work to a personalised programme for best results. Winning the war on wasps by Denise Gunn

Following the successful pilot Wasp Wipeout eradication campaign in the Nelson-Tasman region this summer, the protein bait, Vespex, is now readily available to be used in communities around New Zealand. Conservation minister Maggie Barry visited the Nelson Lakes area recently to bait a trap and see first-hand how effective the campaign has been. “Wasps are a real menace,” she said. “They are one of the most damaging insect pests in New Zealand and are a real problem in beech forests where they compete with kaka, tui and bellbirds for the high energy food honeydew.” Wasps are estimated to cost New Zealand’s economy more than $130 million a year. “The common and German species of wasps have found their way into New Zealand since the 1940s and have had a serious economic impact on farming, beekeeping, horticulture and forestry,” said Ms Barry. As well as competing with native bird species for food sources, wasps have been known to kill chicks as they emerge from their eggs. High densities put increased pressure on native invertebrates and they attack honey bees, raiding the honey from their nests. They also pose a significant threat to human health with more than 1,300 people a year seeking medical treatment for wasp stings. Many more wasp stings are unreported. The Department of Conservation has also worked with campground managers and volunteers

to target wasp populations in ten high-use areas of public conservation land including around lakes Tikitapu, Okataina and Tarawera. DOC ranger Caraline Abbott said that ideally wasps would be treated before the summer season begins. “For Vespex to be used successfully, it needs to be used at a particular time during the wasp feeding cycle, which doesn’t come around until February to March.” Vespex is a protein bait containing the commonly-used insecticide Fipronil. It is targeted at wasps, placed in bait stations, and taken back to wasp nests to feed larvae. It is not attractive to bees. Vespex can be bought online by registering, taking a short safety test and becoming an approved user.

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Ancient Peruvian sea beds enhance NZ Soils by Coast & Country News

Ancient seabed deposits in Peru are providing fertiliser that will enhance New Zealand soils, says Kiwi Fertiliser Company managing director Ron Mclean. Ron’s company has recently taken delivery of a shipment of Sechura Reactive Phosphate Rock — and he was at the Port of Tauranga in February to see 2000 tonnes of it discharged for Kiwi Fertiliser from the MV Lolland. “This RPR fertiliser is the gold standard — the real McCoy of RPR. Its natural phosphorus is not acidified before it is spread on to pasture. “It is tested prior to loading in Peru and is above the minimum 10 per cent phosphorus and 30 per cent citric soluble criteria set for New Zealand RPR standards,” says Ron. “The shipment has arrived at the perfect time for autumn top dressing applications.” Because it is extracted from the ancient seabed in the Sechura region of Peru it also contains a lot of calcium, magnesium, sulphur and minor trace nutrients, which are all readily available to plants through the actions of soil life. Although the Sechura is not altered in anyway, Kiwi Fertiliser does add Brimstone 90 — an elemental sulphur — before application to the product to increase phosphorus plant availability. Reduced leaching “The RPR still has all of the colloidal clay attached to it.” Because it is a fine, sandlike substance, Ron says the risk of leaching into waterways is reduced by up to 80 to 90 per cent. The MV. Lolland spent 22 days at sea to bring the product from Peru to Tauranga and the Sechura RPR was discharged in 26 hours from her holds by a giant grab that can hold the equivalent of a full truck-and-trailer load of

material into the wharf hopper and from there into the trucks waiting below. The shipment has replenish supplies into Kiwi Fertiliser’s stores in Te Teko, Te Awamutu, Marton and Havelock North. Supplies of high quality RPR fertiliser have been limited in New Zealand in recent months — and Ron says Kiwi Fertiliser is pleased to be able to source high quality Sechura for its clients throughout the North Island. Soil audits So strong is the demand, the first two unit loads were dispatched immediately to a hill country beef farm near Wellsford. “This product is ideal for hill country sheep and beef farms, dairy farms particularly in the Waikato, and in fact any soils in which crops are grown and show the need for phosphate application,” says Ron. “However, we only supply phosphate for soils which are shown, through our soil audits, to be lacking in P. Many soils in the Central Plateau regions of Putaruru, Tokoroa, Taupo, Broadlands, Rotorua and Tauranga retain a lot of phosphorus and show excessive P so they don’t need additional applications — but they do need other nutrients that are a higher priority and a better soil fertility investment than phosphorus.” Although the Sechura fertiliser was tested at its source, Kiwi Fertiliser has commissioned two further independent tests from laboratories in New Zealand and the United States so its clients can be assured of the exact percentage of P and other nutrients as well as citric and formic solubility tests.

Taming the flames

There are few pleasures the equal of enjoying a roaring fire in the grate while the temperature plummets outside. Since the beginning of civilisation the fireplace has been the heart of the home, but modern fires provide far more options than our ancestors had at their disposal.

Professional fireplace installers know that the cold weather is the best spur to action for their customers — but also that waiting for the first frost of winter can be a critical error. The process of modern resource consent coupled with the intricacies of installation can mean that it takes several weeks from selecting a fireplace to lighting the first stack of kindling. This is only made more of a process by the choices available. While once a fireplace was the heart of the kitchen, providing piping hot meals as well as heat, these days a fireplace is more often the centrepiece of the living room. This doesn’t mean it can’t serve double duty to heat your household

water, though — if a wetback installation is your desire, costs can be reduced by having the entire install completed by a certified plumber who is also a roofer and fireplace specialist. That way the cylinder connection and flue can be emplaced by the same tradesperson. Another popular option is to upgrade to an alternative fuel source. Efficient pellet fires will obviate the need to either buy in or cut, stack and season firewood, and can generate all the heat of a conventional fire. In fact, many people restoring older homes with a classic look can find wood pellet or gas fires which look the part,

combining rustic charm with modern efficiency. If a gas fire is your call, make sure it’s installed by a fully qualified gasfitter — and if a big renovation is on the cards, this same tradesperson may be able to install califonts and kitchen appliances at the same time. For those with existing fires, the end of summer heralds the right time to call in the chimney sweep. Many insurance companies dictate yearly maintenance to ensure safety and keep your policy within bounds. A quick inspection will also reveal the need for new bricks, baffles or flue repairs, making for a safer and warmer winter. Blinds Curtains Screens Security Awnings Shutters

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

What direction do you choose? A little over four years ago I left the farm after 10 years of farming on the biological trail. Some people thought that to go in that direction you were brave, and others thought you were just plain stupid. There is still a very strong feeling that to take away the dependance of high usage of nitrogen, and more recently palm kernel, would be devastating to many farmers. To even contemplate moving into organics for them would be inconceivable. While regulations stay as they are then these farmers can rest easy and carry on managing their business unchanged. However, whether we like it or not, there is a wind of change blowing and early adopters to this change may well be better prepared for the storm that will inevitably arrive. We may well find that the way that the majority of farms are run will change over the next 5 years. Enforcement of strict regulations are likely to be rolled out during this time. High phosphate and nitrates in waterways are testament to a fertiliser system which clearly needs an overhaul. Whether it’s the farmers who apply it or the fertiliser companies who sell these nutrients, it’s obvious that there is too much for the plants to absorb. If

the plants can’t absorb these surplus nutrients then they end up polluting our precious water. So the regional councils have identified that restrictions are needed to stop the surplus nutrients, by decreasing the amount applied in the future. The overseer programme is the preferred system for measuring and managing this huge undertaking. This all seems fair, particularly from an environmental point of view. But is this scenario really fair? Well, from my experience as a farmer, the biological approach showed a lot of difference from the chemical way. So are these two obviously talked about systems so vastly different? I have found that the more I look and observe, the more the chemical system doesn’t make sense. The more I watch and observe over time the more I see that the chemical system is the very practice that is actually leading farmers down the wrong road. The largest part of my work has been to focus on the end point of our

business, the effluent pond. The obvious practice to manage effluent has been to tackle and manage effluent with machinery. Solid separators, stirrers and weeping walls. The majority of farmers still think this way. There are even consultants that will advise farmers that this is the only way to manage effluent. I have found that the farmers with the biggest effluent problems, particularly crusting and solids, are heavy chemical fertiliser users. In fact I can look at a heavily crusted pond and have a pretty accurate assessment as to the fertiliser a farmer is applying and what his soil is doing. After studying the fertiliser and soil science available to us, I have deduced that fertiliser companies have fabricated or left out some scientific facts, which has led our farming industry down a problematic pathway. If regional councils are now pointing the finger at farmers for their bad fertiliser practices, I would suggest the fault lies with the advice given to the farmers about the best fertilisers to use. I believe that fertiliser choices can be improved and farmers do have better avenues to procure quality products. My research and observation, along with similar practitioners, indicates that a biological approach demands a higher balanced pH soil which always shows increased microbiological activity. Microbes require the best possible conditions to digest food in a cow’s stomach.

March 2017

17

Science has shown that higher pH is a factor here. The more food the microbes and enzymes digest, the less undigested solids end up in the pond. Again, the effluent ponds with the least solids always have a higher pH in the pond. Chemical fertiliser teaching embraces a pH in the soil of 5.8 to 6. My research has very simply shown this soil pH will produce a crusted pond and the lower the soil pH the thicker the crust on the pond. I would suggest that a change to inputs which will lift the pH in a balanced approach, will also lift your efficiency throughout your whole farming system. DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Improving to take on the world by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand’s primary sector is the undisputed powerhouse of our economy, set to generate close to $48 billion of export revenue in 2017. Our produce feeds close to 40 million people, making our output of dairy, beef, lamb and arable crops vital, not just to our own economic survival, but to the day-to-day survival of whole nations. The dairy industry especially is poised to surge this year as the global economic environment begins to look more favourable. But playing on the world stage means staying ahead of the game in terms of best practices, and this vital part of the primary sector is working through a raft of farm by farm infrastructure changes to boost the quality of our finished product, and hence its desirability on the open market. Dairy farmers already face strict environmental restrictions, imposed by local council bodies, with regard to the treatment, storage and usage of effluent. Part of the force driving change toward better practices in this regard is the perception of, and interaction with, the wider public — a public relations and image push which prioritises cleaner waterways and an understanding that the industry is working hard to decrease its environmental footprint. Great success in this overhaul of effluent containment and reuse as fertiliser is often under-reported, but with the application of science and an investment in new tech, farms are becoming cleaner and greener than ever.

To keep up with the expectations of the global market, the dairy industry has been extremely pro-active in self regulation. Measures such as ensuring better, healthier water supplies have come not from without but from within, with initiatives for water purity spearheaded by industry giant Fonterra seeing new standards propagated and enforced, making diary sheds more hygienic places. To further ensure the quality of milk at collection, the next phase of the compliance programme to come into effect looks to centre around milk chiller

plant and equipment. New rules set to come into play in 2018 will require a faster cooldown for milk, direct from the cow to the pre-chiller to the vat. This may require an overhaul of some of the nation’s ‘fleet’ of chillers, and the appropriation of new tech such as ice banks, improved heat exchangers and pre-cooling add-ons. The upshot of all this investment, however, will be a more robust brand image for New Zealand’s dairy products — something which will bring tangible gains and more leverage at the trading table.

WHY A DCS MILK COOLING SYSTEM IS THE BEST INVESTMENT IN YOUR FARM European design and quality - Over 50 years experience in developing milk cooling tanks and one of Europe’s leading Dairy Cooling Systems producers for the needs of farmers around the world – from Mexico to Japan, from Russia to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Horizontal Milk Cooling Tanks with Iced Water Cooling – 50% more effective in cooling the milk compared to standard direct expansion systems without any risk of freezing the milk due to the water temperature of +0.5 > 1.0degC. Highly suitable for AMS (Robotic Farming Systems) with low milk flows – no risk of freezing the milk.

Improved Milk quality through Snap Chilling = potentially a higher return adding PROFITS to the farm. For 30yrs Eurotec has been supplying the NZ Refrigeration Industry with leading Global Brands. The only NZ supplier of this technology providing nationwide coverage and After Sales Support with branches in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with over 30 Approved Refrigeration Installers throughout the country from Invercargill to Whangarei. Waste not — making your effluent matter Injection — the spreading system that maximises the reuse of your effluent. When it comes time to clean out your pond or sump, the most popular system is open-air spreading using slurry tankers. To maximise your effluent reusability, you can incorporate this with an injector system. Spreading by slurry tanker is just one of the open-air spreading methods. This system is an ideal method to distribute effluent all over your farm. If used in conjunction with a high-pressure pond stirrer/jet/pump unit, it is a really effective way of dealing with the buildup of solids in your pond. Specially designed spreading nozzles are used to discharge from the tanker, allowing control over where the effluent is spread and ensuring the effluent is spread at an even application rate and within regulations. All systems have pros and cons and you need to take into account your farm’s geography, the weather and your pasture management programme. Any open-air spreading method can be very weather dependant. Plant leaves that are covered in effluent cannot photosynthesise so if the plant isn’t washed by rain or an irrigator within a reasonable period of

time, the effluent that has been applied may become a hindrance to the plants growth. Animals find these leaves less palatable (and who wouldn’t). Depending on the weather, it can take up to a month before this pasture is able to be grazed again. Using an injecting system is probably one of the best systems for applying effluent to pasture. The injector system puts the effluent under the leaves, directly onto the soil. Usually all that will be seen are brown lines up and down your paddock. This system reduces the amount of nitrogen lost into the air and reduces effluent odour during and after spreading. Importantly, injecting doesn’t cover the leaves of the plant. This means that the pasture can be grazed again in a much shorter time period, which is ideal for short paddock rotation times. Injecting with slurry tankers makes the placement of the effluent exact and reduces the risk of effluent runoff, leaving more nutrients available for immediate plant use over a longer time.

Ensuring livestock have feed Recent inclement weather throughout the North Island is a reminder for farmers to ensure they are reaching average pasture cover and cow condition targets ready for spring. DairyNZ recommends farmers should complete an autumn feed budget to identify shortages and ensure quality of any pasture renewal and also target autumn pests such as black beetle, aphids, clover root weevil and grass grubs where possible. Good grazing management through early autumn includes maximising pasture growth balanced with allowing pastures to recover following the summer dry period. ‘When planning renewal, identify the poor performing paddocks first and address the underlying problems behind pasture deterioration, and consider soil fertility and pH, pugging, overgrazing, weeds, pests, soil compaction and drainage,’ DairyNZ says. ‘Buy quality seed and select the right pasture species and/or cultivar for your farm. Sowing a small area well is less risky than sowing a large area poorly. ‘Take care sowing clover as it should be sown at a shallower depth than

ryegrass, and give special attention to weed control, contouring and levelling if avoiding cultivation after forage crops. ‘Management is helped by leaving consistent post-grazing residuals and grazing pastures at the right time. Grazing ryegrass pastures too early reduces autumn growth and too late reduces the quality. ‘Determine the leaf

stage of your pastures. Leaf appearance rates mainly depend on water availability and temperature, with leaves taking longer to appear where water is limited. ‘For areas nor th of Taupo, the recommended renewal date is March 31, and if permanent pasture is following crops, consider the time for full crop utilisation and the renewal process’.

Return of the top contender by Andy Bryenton

It’s all too easy to slip into a boxing metaphor when talk of the tussle for top light commercial comes around. Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badge-loyalists fuming. Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the bench-seated, chromegrilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. After their previous Colorado failed to topple the blue oval, GM bosses went back to the drawing board, and they’ve delivered an ampedup contender for 2017 — a new Colorado that embraces both modern aesthetics and safety while still staying true to the spirit — and lugging power — of the legendary one tonner. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of

Headed for the top — the new Colorado is set to take on Hilux and Ranger as NZ’s best ute

torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one tonne of deck load and you have a machine which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm. That sense of comfort is more than apparent inside, with options for all the modern conveniences of a luxury

sedan and standard features which older utes could only dream about. The suite of electronics, both visible and invisible, are state of the art as well. It’s hard to miss the big touch screen centre console which serves as a hub for both Android and Apple’s in-car mobile platforms, as well as a reversing camera and entertainment centre. A battery of safety features — including

hill descent control, trailer sway control, stability and traction control, a lane departure warning and even a tyre pressure monitor — offer another level of protection. The top utes had better watch out — one of the big names is back, cinching up its gloves to take a shot at the title. And for a heavyweight contender, it’s not bad looking, either!

Strong on toughness by Andy Bryenton

There are two ways to build a reliable, hard-working utility truck. The first is to come up from the roots of the ute concept — adapting the classic layout of a big sedan and adding a flat deck. The other way is to start at the other end — with an honest to goodness truck. Isuzu is no stranger to building trucks and the big diesel engines that power them. Vast swathes of southeast asia have been built by Isuzu’s heavy haulers, many of which have faced conditions that would crumble lesser machines. That’s why when the Isuzu name appeared on a ute called the D-Max in the not so distant past, it was well worth a look. Those familiar with the tough Bighorn and MU SUVs certainly took note, and a quick pop of the bonnet justified their curiosity. Experience building those big diesel mills has been

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

distilled down into the 4JJ1 turbo diesel — three litres of high-torque combustion armed with modern turbo technology for even more grunt. Just looking at the components of the D-Max’s engine gives one pause; they are visibly bigger and more solidly built than those from other utes in the market. That’s something you feel on the road, with 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity at your disposal. But it’s also something that will pay dividends during the life of the vehicle. Using truck components means that this is a serious workhorse. Big roller bearings and a stainless timing chain are just a couple of examples. That’s not so say that the D-Max isn’t up for its fair share of adventure, either. There’s a reason this ute is a favourite of hunters, teamed up with the founder of outdoor clothing label Swazi. And there’s no bare-bones approach to comfort here, either. A well-appointed cabin filled with all the modern gadgets and safety features comes as standard. It’s proof that the world’s largest diesel manufacturer can blend toughness and reliability with comfort and sharp looks, creating a modern masterpiece.

A leap forward in efficiency by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to power and economy, there’s little question that electronic fuel injection beats traditional carburetted aspiration hands down. It may not have always been the case, but the modern computerised fuel delivery system is the key to better compression and more horsepower. The old style of carburettor went out of automobiles in the early 1980s, with the final examples being cars like the Triumph 2500 S and the first-edition Mazda RX7. It hung on in motorcycles until recently, and persists in even smaller engines such as those in lawnmowers. Or does it? It seems that times are changing in the world of ride-on zero turn mowers at least, with the coming of computer controlled electronic fuel injection to the Ferris mowers range. A good example of why this brand is being picked up enthusiastically by both lifestyle block owners and grounds maintenance professionals, the Ferris IS 3200 Z is more than just an engine upgrade. But once the comfortable seating position, responsive turning circle and wide, durable cutting deck are taken in, it’s the big twin-cylinder 28-horsepower mill mounted behind the driver’s seat which inevitably draws the attention. Similar in size to many other V-twin motors in the Ferris garage, this unit boasts 25 per cent greater fuel efficiency and a super-smooth purr from

SAFETY FIRST

the get-go. Ferris claims that piloting the IS 3200 Z across the turf is like taking a relaxing drive — with the coincidence that you also cut the lawn. That matters, because more fuel economy matched to a bigger fuel tank means more time in the field between breaks to fill up. Having made its new machine more efficient, Ferris has also gone out of its way to make it more comfortable, due to the inevitability of more hours ‘in the saddle’. Its engineers have taken another cue for modern autos — adjustable rear coilover-shocks and front independent adjustable shocks combine with a cushioned seat to make the IS 3200 Z one of the smoothest in the business. Even maintenance is easier, with plug-in diagnostics like a top-end Euro sedan. As more and more people realise that the old push mower is not going to tackle the sward on their lifestyle block or rural property, the zero-turn mower is growing in popularity. This move to a new fuel delivery technology means a big leap ahead for Ferris — from 1980s tech to the 21st century in one go!
