Thank goodness we all have to eat Ian McKelvie MP for Rangitikei

As a Member of Parliament — I listen and I watch. Around the length and the breadth of the Rangitikei Electorate people tell me about their daily challenges of running families, farms and businesses. In the last few short weeks, the world scene and the outlook has changed dramatically. In parliament, I look on at a certain naivety displayed by the current government when it comes to paying minimum wages. It is always relevant here in the Rangitikei as so many people are employed in forestry, meat, wool, tourism and hospitality industries. I need to say that I would love to have an economy that could sustain higher wages for everyone and a government with a positive can-do attitude that encourages fairness and enables people to thrive. Moving around the electorate, it’s not going to be the effect of the lift in the minimum wage that has the major impact. Rather, the flow-on effect on those people up the food chain trying to obtain the relativity that inevitably happens when one sector gets a rise. Job losses could follow as pressure builds on the small business that makes up these sectors. The world has certainly changed in the last few weeks with the ever-present threat of coronavirus upon us. However, I am confident that our New Zealand spirit of looking out for one another and caring for our neighbours will get us through any crisis that may follow. I am confident our health ministry is doing all it can to manage our challenges with this extraordinary situation.

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

The biggest impact on New Zealand will be in the area of economic fortunes as the economies of our major trading partners suffer some major blows. There is one great positive in all of this for New Zealand, which is no different from the situation during the global financial crisis of 2008. The world still needs to eat, and our farming community will once again be ideally positioned to provide the backbone of our economy.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Following Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s announcement regarding the cancellation of large gatherings to prohibit the spread of Covid-19, many events have been postponed or cancelled across the country including the New Zealand National Fieldays Society, which has rescheduled for 10–13 June 2020. “The society stands by the government’s decision to cancel events that draw crowds over 500 in order to stall the spread of Covid-19,” says Society CEO Peter Nation. “The world may be undergoing major challenges in response to Covid-19, but in this changing environment Fieldays will remain, albeit at a later date.” Other cancellations include New Zealand Shears national shearing and woolhandling championships and the remaining NZ Dairy Industry Awards. Dairy Women’s Network face-to-face workshops will now be held as online webinars. For more information on cancellations of events, refer to the relevant event websites for updates and details. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters says the coalition government is determined to do all it can to protect the health of New Zealanders and cushion the disruptive effects of coronavirus on the domestic economy. “Some things are sent to try us. Covid-19 is the latest. The first responsibility of any government is to keep its citizens safe and we will do whatever it takes to control the spread

of the virus,” says Mr Peters. “Covid-19 is a global challenge and our aggressive local response is designed to cushion the economic disruption the country is experiencing. The government has gone hard with its health response and now we’re matching that with our economic response. “New Zealand First is proud to support the economic package. Our concern for older New Zealanders, first and foremost, and supporting business and workers, is reflected in today’s initial response. “While 2020 is a different age, we can learn from how New Zealanders have responded to other great global disruptions — wars, great depressions, sharemarket crashes and the recent SARS virus crisis in our national life. What got the country through those dark periods was a shared sense of self-sacrifice, a belief in ourselves and community. “Now we draw upon those strengths again — care, cooperation and not leaving it to someone else. During the coming months, every New Zealander will need to look out for the most vulnerable amongst us.

The yearning to go farming began in Nathan’s early teenage years. His first introduction, however, came when he enrolled in a Telford agriculture course

through correspondence while at secondary school. Nathan also took up odd jobs, milking cows for a neighbour and learning to fence. “The reason I wanted to go farming was a mix of a love for the outdoors and working outside. My uncle, Russell Knight, used to own the family farm before it was sold. My grandad, Doug Knight, owned it before that. That is where I picked up the passion for it. I loved the stories of breaking in land, and

the application process and was selected along with 10 other young men.” On learning, he had been accepted, and before arriving at Smedley Station, Nathan spent a month on Allan and Ronnie Goss’s farm in the Mangamahu Valley. The pair gave Nathan an introduction to station life. “They are the loveliest and hardestworking people I’ve ever met. It was a great experience.” Nathan arrived at Smedley Station five years ago. During his two years there, he learnt everything required to work on a farm. “As a first-year, you are paired with a second-year who is a mentor and a room-mate. My senior, Henry Smith, currently head shepherd at Palliser Ridge in the Wairarapa, was a great senior who I learnt an awful lot off.” He said Smedley is a fully-functioning

station and cadets are the workforce. “So if a mistake is made, there are pretty big consequences when you’re dealing with live animals, which are a huge investment to the station. It instilled a strong sense of responsibility and pride for the stock. “As a second year, you purchase a broken-in Huntaway and a young heading pup. It is in your second year that we learned to muster and other stockwork — 90 per cent of it was on horseback. You are taught how to break-in your heading pup, and also we broke in a horse each.” As Nathan’s two years at Smedley drew to a close, he was encouraged to study towards a degree by those who understood his long-term goals. Nathan is in his final year studying towards a Bachelor of AgriCommerce, majoring in farm management.

inaugural 2019 Massey Young Farmers Student of the Year contest. The contest saw 21 Massey University agricultural students tackle seven practical modules, testing their farming skills. Following graduation in 2020, Nathan plans to secure a position, which holds more responsibility. He also wants to build up a good team of dogs and work towards stepping on the property ladder. Farm ownership is his eventual longterm goal.

Her husband, Terry, spent nearly 15 years as an engineer based between Levin and Wellington. “Our oldest son was in daycare 40plus hours a week, and family time was near non-existent,” said Maegan. The couple began discussing career options that would enable them to spend more time as a family. “We made a decision always to have a parent available to our children. Therefore farming became the perfect family-friendly option for us. has been the speed they have been able to move from contract milking to sharemilking. The couple bought a complete local herd, topping up numbers with a neighbour’s surplus heifers. They are milking their herd of 320 Friesian/ Friesian-cross cows on the 150ha (128ha effective) farm. “As it’s our first season on-farm, production figures are not available. However, we have a target production of 400kgMS per cow, which we are currently on track to achieve.” Through LIC’s Sire Proving Scheme and future bull team, Terry and Maegan are building up their herd’s genetics. The four-year programme identifies New Zealand’s best bulls through a combination of ancestry records, DNA testing and assessments. Supplementary feed is grown on the farm with a summer crop of close to 10ha in turnips. Surplus spring grass is made into baleage. Working alongside each other to complete everyday tasks is a complete contrast to their previous separate careers. Maegan rears calves, milks when required, and takes care of the office budgets, forecasts, product ordering payroll, as well as health and safety requirements. Although the Leggs haven’t undertaken any formal study within the dairy industry, they are always reading up on various related topics. Maegan found teaming up with a support agribank manager, and rural specialist accounting team, quickly gave her the skills and confidence to successfully

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

An inspiring life — a lasting legacy

by Lockwood Smith

A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that. One was 1999 and the Battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and protesters had gathered in their thousands. At the helm was new WTO Director General, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime. We were trying to launch a new trade round and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on. The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed

another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. But its voice, of course, was buried under the EU. Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my well-being, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever. Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history and Mike Moore is part of that legacy. A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble

beginnings to global leadership. While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated Mike for the WTO role. As Trade Minister, I was pleased to support it, but became more deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside. He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a

smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle. My working relationship with the Clinton administration by this time was pretty good. They’d even given me the White House operator’s phone number — an amazing system where, if they trusted you, you could get put through to key cabinet members wherever they were across the country. Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t

know, but Mike finally got US support and the job. While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001. He also successfully brought China into the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first Trade Minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends. When I was Speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues. Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required. Life was not a rehearsal for Mike. He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution. But I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all. And it’s this. Over the past 30 years New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free

trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO. But New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally — removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our own economy. I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan approach to trade liberalisation here in New Zealand when he was himself Trade Minister in the 1980s. In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically important policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been less enamoured with trade liberalisation

Time the great healer (Part one)

I recently spoke with a client who I first helped more than two years ago. He is an ex-farmer who was having real trouble with osteoarthritis in his knees. Realistically surgery was his only option. My role as a nutritional medicine practitioner is to identify the dietary and supplement options that can help. There are many factors that can cause osteoarthritis (OA). Genetics, injury, occupation and nutrition all play a part. Direct injury to joints can set off a faulty biochemical chain that finishes with the destruction of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes resulting in cartilage loss. Interestingly the same basic defective biochemistry is also triggered by nutritional factors. A deficiency in antioxidants, especially those made by the trace minerals selenium, zinc, copper and manganese leave chondrocytes exposed to oxidative stress, a technical term to describe free radical damage. The end result is always the same. Chondrocytes are damaged or die, meaning cartilage cannot be repaired. Eventually, cartilage thins often replaced by bony spurs as our bone survival mechanism kicks in. The body then tries to heal the problem

with inflammation — which makes it worse. Two years ago, I created a personalised nutritional support programme for my client. It included a dietary recommendation to support cartilage and to reduce inflammation. We added supplements initially at higher doses. That included my OA support supplement, which is a little different to most. While it includes glucosamine, the real hero is the 800–1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin sulphate supported by meaningful amounts of curcumin from turmeric and fish oils to reduce inflammation. This week I emailed him to ask how he was doing. His response was that he thinks he has delayed future surgery by 10 years. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Regulations spark opportunity Tightened United States rules on grass-fed milk and meat branding can be a windfall for Kiwi farmers, says Nathan Balasingham, Chief Technical Officer of New Zealand biotechnology company Zest Biotech. The updated USDA rule for ‘grassfed’ or ‘pasture-fed’ milk or meat is very restrictive. If managed prudently, it could give New Zealand farmers a market advantage. The rule, which was published in December 2019, will exclude a lot of our competitors who will not be able to eliminate grain from their feed. According to the US Department of Agriculture ‘Grass Fed’ or ‘100% Grass Fed’ claims may only be applied to meat and meat product labels derived from cattle that were only (100%) fed grass (forage) after being weaned from their mother’s milk. The diet must be derived solely from forage, and animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter. That means 100% grass-fed animals are never confined to a feedlot. Grass-fed milk and meat are considered healthier with better taste and flavour. Animals raised as grass-fed have better animal health, animal welfare and climate change outcomes. The milk and meat has a better omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, higher levels of antioxidants, lower risk of E coli infection

and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are, therefore, better for consumer health. Grass-fed cattle produce beef that is tender because it cooks faster, and the well-marbled meat, in the opinion of many connoisseurs, is better-tasting than grain-fed beef. Zest Biotech has developed a pasture spray, Biozest, that is reported to significantly increase pasture productivity. Louise and Neville Williams, certified organic dairy farmers and Ballance Farm Environmental Awards winners in Karapiro, did a trial on baleage. The Biozest treated paddocks produced 13 bales a hectare on average, the untreated control paddocks averaged just seven bales a hectare. There was a 78% increase in baleage overall. Mike and Janelle Kelly in Orongo, near Thames, carried out a similar trial and produced 12 bales a hectare from the Biozest treated paddocks and five bales out of the untreated control paddocks. There was a 129% increase in baleage overall in the Biozest treated paddocks. If our farmers can improve pasture productivity on this scale, they can safeguard our grass-fed brand, which is valuable in all markets.

NECK PAIN?

Then try a Teeter WHY INVERSION?

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, first recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment. Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other benefits apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other benefits.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting off the Teeter pain free for the first time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more fluid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to flex. Because it always flexes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure. Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him young

All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not flex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create a suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Bert’s Ferts small block fertiliser spreading Enrich your soil life, improve crop yields and quality, improve the health of grazing animals and reduce reliance on chemicals. These are bold statements that persuaded Bert Jordan to try MicroLime and Nitrosol Liquid fertiliser on his lifestyle property. “It was amazing to see the difference it made to the pasture and the animals,” he said. “The animals seemed more settled, particularly the horses. There was definitely no ‘warming effect’ like there can be with some fertilisers”. Bert then wanted to spread the word and, with his John Deere Gator, saw an

opportunity to assist other people on small blocks. “Often the big trucks can’t get into the smaller areas, or the size of the truck can cause damage to pasture,” Bert explains. He notes that the Gator has a low impact on the pasture and can spread fertiliser over most terrain. The fertiliser is diluted with water, and he uses a spreading rose system allowing greater coverage. Bert reports that since he started applying the fertiliser to his

A man ahead of his time

FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

Rural contractors everywhere would likely be praising the name of Hiram Moore every morning as they turned the keys to their combine harvesters; if only they knew who he was. The American inventor lived an eventful life but missed out on fame and fortune by reaching too far too fast. Today he’s known as the father of the combine, but in his own time, he was the man who missed out on patenting the reaping machine. Moore lived in the interestingly named town of Climax, near Kalamazoo, Michigan, a place he’d helped to found by wagon train. The strait-laced Christian settlers saw nothing funny about the name; they were talking about the fact that the founding of the town was the high point of their journey west. They also found nothing funny about the sheer amount of crops, which the fertile soil there brought forth. Enough that, in 1835, a friend of Moore’s asked him if he could design a machine to help cut it all, saving the town’s scythe-swinging menfolk a lot of aching backs. It’s possible that Moore’s friend had read about a machine made by Scotsman Patrick Bell in 1826, using the same scissor cutting method sometimes still used today. A few of these machines had reached the east coast before the founders of Climax saddled up to go west, but they were notoriously tricky to use and were never patented. However, Hiram Moore had a vision. He wanted to design a machine

13

Water Well Drilling for 45 Years Four Generations of Knowledge Twenty mules pull a mid-1860s Case brand combine; a refinement of Hiram Moore’s early work PHONE

that could not only reap the grain but thresh it and winnow it too. All three parts of the machine were clear in his mind. He retreated to a large barn and began to experiment. In 1835, as the harvest came around, a monster of a machine came forth from that old building. Hiram Moore had done it. He had created the first-ever combine harvester, but it was gigantic. Twenty horses and a team of men were required to get it moving, and its internals were complex and made of wood and iron, not modern materials as we see today. Despite all this, the concept caught on. Poor old Hiram spent his later years wrangling with rival inventor

06 368 3252

Cyrus McCormick, who designed a simpler reaping machine at about the same time. Some Michigan folk say that Cyrus literally pinched patent blueprints from Hiram out of the post, while others accept that the McCormick reaper was simply a coincidence. By the 1860s the combine concept had been picked up by large companies, and soon enough modern steel and the diesel engine would see it become king of the fields. Modern machines unload six bushels a second; unthinkable in the 1830s. Without Hiram Moore’s 20-horsepower creation, none of it would be possible.

Every seed in its place by Andy Bryenton

Each year the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers gathers to judge the top 50 most innovative products and engineering designs in the food and agriculture industry. The resulting AE50 Awards are chosen by international engineering experts and provide a snapshot of state-of-the-art in the agricultural tech industry. Winning products are recognised for their ingenuity, for advanced product development, and for saving farmers time, costs and labour in the field, while making advances in ecology, economy and operator safety. With only 50 places to award across all the multiple facets of farming, they are hotly contested — to say the least. This year a significant AE50 Award went home with John Deere, for their highly advanced N500C Series air drill. Judges deemed the complex implement with its simplified interface; an outstanding innovation that improves production on the farm. “AE50 Awards reaffirm the innovative spirit of our employees and illustrate John Deere’s commitment to bring those linked to the land the most useful, highquality products possible,” says Joel Dawson, the director of production and precision agriculture for John Deere’s.

“No one in the industry invests more in research and development than John Deere, and we remain committed to that strategy. Our engineers take great pride in creating new technology and products to benefit our customers.” The N500C Series gives operators easy meter access, the latest in integrated technology for highly accurate seed placement, and control and confidence to help them do the best seeding job possible for cereals, canola, soybeans and other crops. Feedback and an easy to understand control system make all the difference, as in farming knowledge is power.

New technologies added to the N500C Air Drills include John Deere’s proprietary ActiveCal tank scales for on-the-go seeding calibration from the cab, RelativeFlow blockage for rowto-row seed-flow monitoring, TruSet downforce control from the cab, and the SeederPlus app for convenient calibration of meters and weight monitoring for tank scales. Combining both software and hardware advantages makes this seed drill easy to switch between different crops and fields, ensuring that every one of literally millions of seeds is put precisely in its place.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE What lies beneath by Andy Bryenton

It’s a toss-up between styles when it comes to revitalising the floors in your home. On the one hand, wool carpets provide all kinds of options for warmth, are soft underfoot, and come in a variety of colours to complement the palette you’ve chosen for your decor. On the other, there’s much to be said for the beautiful grain and texture found beneath many of our carpeted rooms. Wood floors were seen as second best when electricity brought the vacuum cleaner into homes. The trend for covering over the natural wood grain of our old villas and bungalows carried on strong into the post-war years, but a sea change in thinking has pervaded the design world in this new century. The unique woods, which were used to create our older, vintage and classic homes include native species that may never again be felled for the construction market, up to and including kauri. Displaying the history, the rich, glowing tones and the unique pattern of wood grains in these floors have become an art for floor sanding and refinishing companies. That’s not to say that these professionals don’t have their role to play in making other areas of the home ready to receive a new covering, especially in areas like the kitchen where years of heavy appliance movements, coats of paint, nails and the possible addition or deletion of cupboards, sinks and workstations can make for patchy and uneven floors. These ideally need to be smooth as a bowling green to accept a perfect application of new fresh

A good floor sanding company can begin with a coarser grain to strip back the years and layers of paint and wear, then carefully use finer and finer grades of sandpaper media to expose

the lustre of the wood below. A perfect, smooth poly coat finishes a job, which complements both rustic and modern looks, and can be paired with large-scale rugs and carpets to create ‘islands’ of warmth in winter.

Turning the screw on outdoor chores

In building and engineering, first came the nail, then came the threaded bolt and screw. These innovations changed the way materials were joined together, and enabled quicker, easier assembly of materials. Now that simple principle has been applied to affixing posts and foundations into the ground, and it’s a potential game-changer.

Developed in Sweden, a nation with one of the harshest and unforgiving climates on Earth, the Stop Digging system replaces the work of spades, post hole borers, concrete mixers and shovels to create a base that’s not just rock steady, but founded on solid steel. Galvanised, and with a wide bore, their large 1,200mm earth screws attach whole buildings to the ground as easily as screwing a picture frame to the wall of a house. In many ways, they outperform more traditional foundation and in-ground installation methods. As the Kiwi operators of this system say: “We offer a clean, cost-effective, long-lasting alternative to conventional concrete foundations. Our screw piles are suitable for a host of applications including timber buildings, decking, fences, balconies, pergolas, flagpoles,

play equipment and sign furniture. Contact us now to see how we can save you time, effort and money on your next project!” Why so adaptable? The tops of the screws used to drill deep into the ground are available in a variety of specialised shapes. Want to erect a building? There is a flat, stable top end ready to take the weight and accept fastening bolts. Need a fence? Use a screw, which can accommodate a robust pole above ground. There are attachments for use in making everything from carports to jetties. For those who want to take the backache out of the first stages of construction, the recommendation couldn’t be clearer. Stop Digging, and put a new twist on getting things done outdoors.

These days we take it almost for granted that a phone call will summon for us a master craftsperson or professional who can practise their trade for us in our own home or on the farm. Things were very different, though, in medieval times, when people were forbidden from moving around freely by feudal laws. The first ‘free agents’ in the trades were the journeymen, and part of this is thanks to a mistranslation! Ancient guild law gave three ranks to craftspeople, those of apprentice, journeyman and master. The ‘three degrees’ of rank are still preserved by very ancient guilds like those in London, and by groups like the Masons. The term ‘to give someone the third degree’ refers to the tough spoken-word exam used to test journeymen and see if they were ready to become masters; that’s why it refers to a fierce interrogation. Apprentices, as today, received less pay and took part of their wage in education. It’s the second group, the journeymen, who were the first on-call professionals. The original term comes from the Latin ‘diurnus’, for ‘day’. It was translated into French as ‘journee’ when France was the superpower of medieval Europe. Hence a ‘journee-man’ was a fully qualified person who was paid day by day for their work and could work for any master by negotiation. He was allowed to switch job sites at will, seeking the

best pay for his efforts, and could travel at a time when many common people could not, taking his gear on the road in a horse-drawn wagon. The only restriction was that the ‘journee-man’ was not allowed to hire his own staff until he had produced a perfect example of his craft to be inspected by a board of masters. That was literally his ‘masterpiece’. Some think that a mistranslation of ‘journee’ as ‘journey’ led to the practice of German guild members of the second rank actually being sent on a three-year tour of Europe German wandergeselle in traditional uniform — carrying on the tradition of the f to hone their skills. irst-ever on-call tradies from 1,000 years ago Unlike journeymen of other nations, the ‘wandergeselle’ of the ‘journeymen’ are usually fully qualified German carpenters guild, for example, masters in their own right, but they do must travel from town to town to learn indeed travel out to work on a daily or all the different specialities, which come hourly rate to help the rest of us with from different regions. In New Zealand, jobs like plumbing, electrics, mechanical the concept has come full circle. Our work and more.

Plan a flaming good winter Summer’s end means it’s time to consider the comfort and warmth of your home during the colder months, and that means laying in a good supply of dried and split firewood. While you’re likely ahead of the game in this regard after a dry summer, with ample deadwood cut down to size and stacked ready for the first frosts, how about the fireplace itself? We talked to a top fireplace installer about ways to know it’s time for a fireplace trade-up. The aesthetic design of fireplaces may have been in a state of change as fashions come and go, but the basic design has seen us right since the colonial era. A sturdy metal box surrounds a core of firebricks, specially designed to withstand the prolonged and intense heat of burning wood. Baffles stop the flames from burning directly into the metal of the top of the firebox and the joint with the chimney, which would soon heat to red-hot like iron in a smith’s forge without them. Finally, the chimney itself is sleeved within a flue pipe, which carries the smoke up past the top of the roofline. Problems with any of these parts can be easily fixed, so long as they are caught early. Firebricks can often be traded out in modern ‘free-standing’ fires, though this can be more difficult in vintage ‘in-wall’ units. Baffles should be checked for corrosion and replaced if they have cracks or holes. A good inspection of the firebox itself for rust, cracking or welded seams giving out is

a must, as is a close look at the joint where the chimney meets the firebox. Once again, this is easier done with a free-standing wood fire and may have been neglected in an in-wall model due to lack of simple access. A little-known fact is that fireplaces need their chimneys swept on a regular basis as part of most home and contents insurance packages. Check yours carefully, as it might have a definitive time scale such as annually or biannually worded into the contract.

A good chimney sweep each year is, of course, a great idea if you live in a rural area, as birds are prone to nest in the chimney top during summer. The ‘hat’ atop the chimney is the last thing to check, as it’s important that rain doesn’t seep in to corrode the joints where the flue keeps weathertight

with the roof, or allow water into the firebox when it’s not in use, also promoting corrosion. A fireplace installer (often your local plumber or roofer) can take a look at all of these aspects during a regular chimney sweep, and you’ll be all set for winter with peace of mind.

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

call 0800 436 566 or visit www.dolomite.co.nz

Essential to robust good health Now, more than ever, our own health is paramount. Pathogenic bacteria and viruses are constantly evolving, and their role is to take out those least able to resist. Although vaccinations provide some protection, the ultimate defence is a wellfunctioning immune system. Human health is dictated to a large extent by what we eat, and whether vegetable, meat or milk, its suitability is determined by the health and quality of the soil it is grown in. What is often not considered is that soil ideally contains 25% air and 25% moisture. Soil is a living, breathing organism and for maximum health and performance, the two go together — air should be able to enter freely, and gases escape. Treading by animals during grazing compresses the soil and the ability to rapidly regain its ideal state largely dictates winter growth and the production of animals. Golden Bay dolomite is an outstanding soil conditioner, adding a little extra body to light sandy soils. Clay and heavier silt soils also benefit as dolomite improves friability with excess moisture able to drain more freely during winter. Dolomite contains both calcium and magnesium in the carbonate form. Being originally a seabed deposit, it also contains a wide range of essential trace elements.

WANTED

• Reject milk for feeder calves. • Price varies depending on quality. • Will travel for reasonable quantities. • Efficient pick up.

The major benefit is a marked reduction in calcium/magnesium related metabolic disorders at calving. Where there is one clinical case there will be several other cows adversely affected. These animals, although not obviously impacted, will produce well below their potential for the coming season. A single application in autumn at 200–250kg/

ha ensures few ill-health issues in spring alleviating the frustration of treating animals unable to walk. Although regarded as expensive by some, the reduction in staff hours and veterinary call-outs in the middle of a cold and wet calving period make it extremely good value. ADVERTORIAL

Robots among us for 25 years In 1995, Husqvarna took the first step into a new product segment with the launch of the world’s first robotic lawnmower, the Husqvarna Solar mower. It started to change the way lawns are maintained all over the world. To highlight a quarter-century since this breakthrough, Husqvarna is giving away a single, strictly limited-edition model of their latest Automower 315X. “We’re very proud to have developed the category to reach this business milestone and to release a limited edition 315X to mark the occasion,” says Sofia Axelsson, vice president of Husqvarna Division’s consumer unit. “With Husqvarna Automower, we’ve been determined to continuously innovate our solutions in order to lead the category forward, and we’re excited about what the future holds for robotic mowing.” In 1992, Bengt Andersson, the Husqvarna CEO at the time, saw the potential in robotic mowing and formed a group of engineers who developed what would become the first Husqvarna robotic mower — the Husqvarna Solar mower. Three years later, the company released its first generation of Husqvarna Automowers, robotic mowers, which returned to a grid-connected charger. That made it possible to mow the lawn around the clock and regardless of the weather. The mower knew when the battery required charging and returned automatically to the charging station. The second generation of Husqvarna Automower was introduced in 2003 and

featured a new design and a number of improvements. Later, other models based on this platform were launched, including a mower that could manage lawns up to 6,000m2 and a hybrid mower with both solar cells and battery. The third generation Husqvarna Automower platform arrived in 2011. Five years later, the Husqvarna Automower 430X and 450X were introduced, both equipped with GPS theft tracking, GPS assisted navigation and Husqvarna’s Automowers are the quiet advance guard of the LED headlights. In 2019, the robotics revolution, helping make lawn care stress free first all-wheel-drive robotic mowers were launched; the Husqvarna “Husqvarna has progressed from being Automower 435X AWD for residential a professional chainsaw brand, into customers and the 535 AWD for a market leader in the outdoor power professional customers. Being all-wheel- equipment industry. “With our passion for innovation, drive machines, both mowers can handle inclines of up to 70%. As of 2019, development and precision, we have there were two million Automowers seen the company continue to progress out there working — a ‘robot army’ its robotic mowing technology by helping humanity! Husqvarna NZ unveiling the first voice-controlled allCountry Manager Colin Stimpson says: wheel-drive Automower in 2019.”

Twin-spin induction for Ranger by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s success with the Ranger ute is verging on the biblical, with variants of the popular light commercial popping up everywhere you turn. Stand on a busy street corner and count them going past, and you’ll see just how deep New Zealand’s love affair with the Ranger goes. Now there’s a new name in the line-up, and it’s not so much filling a gap as it is creating new demand, with the magic words ‘bi-turbo’. It’s not the first twin-forced-induction Ranger, but it is the return of the FX4 badge to the line-up, slotting in just between the XLT and the top-spec Wildtrak. It’s not just twin-spooling action under the hood which recommends this new machine. There’s a whopping 10 gears behind the bell housing as well, and some distinctive styling to make the new FX4 stand out from the pack. “We are excited to be able to offer our customers the new FX4 with the biturbo engine alongside the class-leading 10-speed automatic transmission. To have the addition of both a 4WD and 2WD Ranger FX4 really steps things up for them. It is the first time we have offered the bi-turbo/10-speed combination in a 2WD Ranger,” said Simon Rutherford, managing director of Ford New Zealand. “It’s all wrapped in its very own design elements and features, to offer customers a Ranger with a genuine identity as a stand-alone model.” Ford’s bi-turbo powertrain was first introduced on the Ford Performance

Ford’s Ranger FX4 bi-turbo stands out from the rest with new styling and that signature double-forced-induction engine note

Ranger Raptor and produces a healthy 157kw of power and 500 newton-metres of torque. In this iteration, it’s mated with a specifically tuned, new generation 10-speed paddle-shift automatic, allowing the convenience of auto with the

option to take command of downshifts for effortless passing manoeuvres. The 10-speed automatic includes a lockout feature to hold specific gears when towing, giving the Ranger FX4 bi-turbo a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg. It’s

not all about sheer muscle, though; the bi-turbo delivers a fuel efficiency figure of 6.7 litres/100km combined for the 2WD and 7.4 litres/100km combined on the 4WD, showing the depth of its capabilities.
