Dairy Manager head judge Richard Kyte from DairyNZ said the high calibre of the dairy manager finalists made judging very difficult. “You could throw a blanket over the top six or seven, the marks were so close.” Judges described Hayley as a ‘quiet-achiever’. “She has an all-round solid approach to the way she manages the farm she is working on,” said Mr Kyte. “Her staff management was exceptional and her ability to set tasks and achieve targets were all linked to her people management skills. “Hayley has a great understanding on how to empower people to work to their best potential to work in making the whole team more efficient. She is quite insightful for someone who is reasonably young.” The 28-year-old is farm manager for Te Paratai Farms Ltd, on Nigel, Roger and Noelene Taylor’s 200ha property in Rongotea, milking 650 cows. She won $22,600 in cash and prizes. Hayley also won the Primary ITO Power Play Award. She was the Manawatu Dairy Trainee of the Year in 2014. There were several noticeable trends showing with the finalists, including ownership of their roles, care of staff

and the desire to give back to the industry. “Some of the finalists are new managers and they are already wanting to support other people into the dairy industry and to promote it as a career pathway,” said Mr Kyte. There was also a noticeable trend of increased awareness regarding health and safety practices. Mr Kyte noted that there was a definite lack of entrants striving for farm ownership too. “The industry needs to think about succession moving forward,” he said. New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards general manager Chris Keeping said there was an overwhelmingly strong theme among the 33 finalists competing for honours in the awards programme. “The finalists are acutely aware of the importance of farming responsibly, with regards to both environmental issues and animal management. “It’s extremely positive to see such dedication to these issues within the industry.” Christopher and Siobhan O’Malley of Canterbury-North Otago were named the 2017 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year. The 2017 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year award went to Clay Paton of the West Coast-Top of the South region.

New national body to represent Rural Support Trusts The election of a national body to represent New Zealand’s 14 Rural Support Trusts has been welcomed by Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy. all local people who know the area and the farming or growing industries, and much of their work is helping sometimes isolated rural communities keep connected and build morale when the going is tough. “The value of the Rural Support Trusts in times of adversity has been made very clear in the recent months with droughts across the country, the earthquake in Kaikoura, Marlborough and the Hurunui, and floods in the Bay of Plenty. “The trusts and National Council work closely with Ministry for Primary Industries, which provides partial funding along with their own fundraising work.” In the last two years the government has provided extra funding to Rural Support Trusts to improve access to mental health support in the rural community. Coordinators have been trained to recognise and manage signs of depression or extreme stress, and are connected to rural health professionals. In its first meeting the Rural Support National Council elected its first chairperson, Waikato Rural Support Trust chair Neil Bateup, and Gavan Herlihy from Otago was appointed vice chairperson.

“Rural Support Trusts do fantastic work supporting our rural communities in tough times, and this new central body will make them more efficient and effective,” said Mr Guy. Some Rural Support Trusts have provided support on hardship or assistance in adverse events since the 1980s. Others were set up out of Federated Farmers. Several were formed or strengthened with assistance from the former Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries after the On-Farm Adverse Events Recovery Framework came into effect in 2007. The trusts provide free and confidential assistance to farmers and growers facing challenges; climate, financial or personal. Mr Guy said the new central body will provide a single point of contact for other national organisations and the government. It will also help the different regions share resources and experience. “Rural Support Trusts operate independently in their areas, staffed by local people who really know their local communities,” he said. “All trusts have trained facilitators who can assist rural people with a range of issues. The facilitators are

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Passion for permaculture by Anna Harding

Nelson and Dani Lebo are permaculture farmers and creators of the Eco School who moved to New Zealand from the United States eight years ago. They use their five hectare block in Whanganui to share their passion for building community, education and sustainability with the world.

“W

e met teaching at a private school and initially came over to New Zealand because Nelson had already decided to do his PhD here. He did that at Waikato, and we thought ‘we’re going to be here for a few years, might as well get our residency and buy a house, and we might as well have a kid, and then another kid, and now it’s eight-and-halfyears later” says Dani. Nelson says his interest in farming probably started with his father having a vegetable garden while growing up in Detroit. So as an adult “I bought a 38 acre farm in New Hampshire in 2000 and I developed it as an organic farm six years before I even meet Dani.”

“I basically went on as many farm tours as I could and every summer I would go to this conference in New England and learn, then go up to my farm and make lots of mistakes, then next year go back to the conference and learn some more.” Since then Nelson has built up his own and others’ land with organic and permaculture farming systems. “I’ve essentially been developing organic properties for 17 years,” he says. The word permaculture was first used in a 1978 book — Permaculture One, by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. ”They looked at traditional and scientific knowledge and asked

‘how can we extract the best practices and make a set of rules, so that we can create landscapes that not only benefit humans, but benefit and restore the earth?” says Dani. Nelson adds that “permaculture is often called regenerative agriculture. Which means you’re actually healing worn out land. You are building the health and resilience of the land.” With Dani and Nelson’s love of the environment, education and community, they became farmers and started the Eco School. “There’s a lot of different ways for a person to lower their environmental impact and for us, going down that path has lead us to owning our own farm, but a lot of people do it different

ways. “The Eco School itself is more about community teaching. We have programmes from pre-school age up to adults. One of the bigger ones we do is the internship programme. People from all over the world come and live at the site and are able to earn their permaculture design certificate” says Dani. A typical day on their property starts with feeding the animals. “We keep ducks, chickens, goats, pigs, cows and sheep,” says Dani. “For the rest of the day there’s compost to be turned and plants to water and weed. We try to grow our own vegetables, so we harvest on a daily basis. We manually control thistles as we try not to use pesticides and we try to

involve the kids as much as possible. There’s a lot of different systems in play — it’s very interactive,” says Dani. They are only all home three days a week as Nelson works four days for the Palmerston North Council. There’re also their children, one-yearold Suleiman and four-year-old Verti to look after. But with the help of their interns, they make it work. A proud moment in their journey so far has been a previous property being used as an example in David Holmgren’s new book Metro Suburbia, says Nelson. “One of my big gripes with sustainability and permaculture is that

it’s perceived as a upper middle class endeavour and as being very expensive,” he says. So they blogged their “eco thrifty renovation” of an old house and piece of land into an eco-friendly working permaculture property, “to prove that it can be done cheaply. Finances do not have to be a barrier to a warm dry home and growing your own food,” says Nelson. The couple advises anyone interested in permaculture to “make heaps of mistakes, learn and keep on going. Go on as many farm tours as you can, experiment and just go for it!” says Nelson.

The beekeeping team at Downunder Honey

THE PURCHASE OF A FEW BEEHIVES LED TO A CHANGE OF LIFESTYLE, LOCATION AND CAREER FOR JASON AND AMANDA PRIOR.

L

iving and working in Wellington in the late 2000s, the couple were looking to move out of the city and take on something different. “I wanted to get out of the corporate environment,” said Jason. “My mother was interested in bees, so around Mother’s Day we went looking for a beehive and bought enough equipment for five beehives. I was a hobby beekeeper in Wellington for a while.” Jason joined the Wellington

Beekeepers Association, attending the club’s monthly meetings and field days to learn the basics. He also furthered his knowledge through reading books on the topic and talking to beekeepers. He said renowned beekeeper and columnist Frank Lindsay is a great mentor to club members and he picked up a lot of information from him. Originally from Manawatu, Jason was keen to move back to the district. Since swapping their house in Wellington for

a lifestyle block in Cheltenham several years ago, the couple haven’t looked back. They now operate a commercial beekeeping enterprise with 1,300 hives, producing a range of natural, raw and creamed honey under their label Downunder Honey. Initially starting with 150 beehives, it was mostly through word of mouth that they sourced places to locate their hives. “Amanda used to do a lot of driving around and we found knocking on doors very successful,” said Jason. Their beehives are scattered primarily around the Manawatu and Rangitikei with some placed on family land in Taranaki. The hives are located on both pastoral farmland and in the bush. Jason said there is a lot of competition for floral resources with a

lot of new beekeepers in the industry. “The industry has changed in recent years with large corporate-funded beekeepers putting pressure on the traditional family-run operations. “We are now seeing this in the Manawatu with corporate beekeepers dumping large numbers of bees adjacent to existing beekeepers.” “Beekeeping floral nectar resources don’t belong to anyone, it’s a unique resource that belongs to the country as a whole.” said Jason. He said bees will travel where they want to go. “We all have a role, however, to protect this resource, for bees and all the other native pollinators. It needs to be sustainable.” In 2012 the couple built an extraction shed on their property and recently

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Looking for a local beekeeper to extract the most value out of your Manuka? Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

expanded this facility. “We extract for other beekeepers now too,” said Jason. The couple process honey on their premises under a registered New Zealand Food Safety Risk Management Programme (RMP). Most of the honey produced at Downunder Honey is sold wholesale. After extraction, the honey is sent to a honey packer for blending. “It’s standardised to a colour and taste range.” Downunder Honey is available for purchase at The Daly Larder in Feilding and some is also for sale to the public by appointment. “It’s a volume thing,” he said. “There’s a lot of work in packing a small amount of honey. A lot

of New Zealand honey is now exported whereas 30 years ago, it was almost all sold domestically.” Jason trained his three beekeepers from scratch, including a refugee from Bhutan. A couple of additional people are employed during summer to work in the honey shed. “We are very proud of being a locally owned and operated beekeeping business. Downunder Honey models around sustainable beekeeping. Overstocking is avoided and artificial feeding is minimised. Keeping disease under control is paramount. “We run a varroa programme throughout

Downunder Honey is developing a nursery, sourcing and propagating trees specifically with bees in mind

the year, traditional treatments aren’t working. It’s the biggest single issue in the industry at the moment in my view,” said Jason. “New Zealand is quite protected geographically from some of the other diseases.” Jason finds bees fascinating and is always learning from them. “Bees are incredibly complex creatures and one of the most intelligent insects,” he said. “A beekeeper can open a hive and tell by the noise how the bees are doing.” A new initiative for Downunder Honey is the development of a nursery providing trees specifically bred with

bees in mind. “We are leveraging the Trees for Bees project that was led by Landcare Research, we are sourcing and propagating our trees from local stock and offering these to our landowners as part of the wider partnership we have.” said Jason. Trees will be available for sale to the public in the future. “We are also investing in our own partnership for Manuka plantations.” As the couple have expanded Downunder Honey in recent years, they are now looking to consolidate the business. “We are quite interested in diversifying around the bees, and the nursery is one of these initiatives,” said Jason.

AWARD-WINNER

KEEN TO HELP OTHERS BY DENISE GUNN

One day of milking with a friend was all it took for Hayley Hoogendyk to discover dairy farming was a career path she wanted to follow.

W

ith a Bachelor of Business Studies majoring in sports management, Hayley was working as an events manager. However, when the department she worked for closed and left her between jobs, Hayley applied for a relief milking position. Instead, Hayley was immediately offered a full-time farm assistant position. “I told the guy he was mad because I didn’t know how to farm, but he employed me anyway,” she said. Hayley began work in the middle of calving and worked 18 days straight. “Now that is jumping in the deep end, I loved it and have never looked back.” she said.

After one and a half seasons as a farm assistant for Cheetham Limited, Hayley worked two seasons as 2IC for Te Paratai Farms on a lease block near Feilding with 300 cows. “I then did one season managing on my own with 200 cows on the lease farm near Feilding for Te Paratai.” This season Hayley moved to Te Paratai’s 220ha home farm near Rongotea, owned by Roger, Noelene and Nigel Taylor, milking 650 Friesian cows. The 28-year-old’s hard work, skills and experience were recognised recently as she was named 2017 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year. It was the first time a sole woman has won the

Dairy Manager competition. Dairy manager head judge Richard Kyte from DairyNZ said Hayley has an all-round solid approach to the way she manages the farm she is working on. “Her staff management was exceptional and her ability to set tasks and achieve targets were all linked to her people management skills,” he said. “Hayley has a great understanding on how to empower people to work to their best potential therefore making the whole team more efficient. She is quite insightful for someone who is reasonably young. “She’s a young woman managing a team of men and does well motivating them to perform at a very high level. Her team hold her in high-regard and there is a great team culture. She understands all the different personalities of her staff and how they fit in with each other. “Her on-farm skills were exceptional. The farm business is performing well and her pasture management is excellent. Hayley is a hands-on manager and likes being out there alongside her staff. Hayley empowers her staff to work together to meet targets. She has an excellent manner with animals and is concerned about the welfare of each individual cow. “In her spare time, she is also extremely active in her community.” Hayley enjoys working with animals, the staff and the variety of work each day brings. “There is such a wide variety of things to learn and excel at so it never gets boring,” she said. “This industry involved skills of so many other industries from vet to mechanic, plumber to businessman, investor to agronomist, and human resources. I enjoy this industry because you can move through the industry if you work hard,” said Hayley. “How many other jobs can you be in an industry for three years and be in a position where you are running a multimillion dollar business. “This industry provides for the country and the world, and I am proud of that.” In 2014 Hayley also won the Manawatu Dairy Trainee of the Year. She said that win was a great way to realise the skills she had, and what

I Ear-tagging calves in the shed she needed to learn more about. “The dairy manager got me thinking about my farm, and when I compared my farm’s KPI’s to the national targets, I was able to identify areas we needed to improve and how we could do it.” Hayley has also proven several sceptics wrong with her chosen career. “When I started farming, a lot of people laughed and said I would never cope with dairy farming, and was too small and weak to succeed. “Proving every single one of them wrong was extremely satisfying,” she said. Hayley is currently halfway through studying towards the Level 5 diploma with Primary ITO, and although her Bachelor of Business Studies wasn’t initially a relevant qualification, Hayley is now finding it useful. “It is becoming apparent that this business understanding is helping me work with the farm owner better as I understand why he makes decisions. “This will also help me when I am self-employed.” As a member of Fitzherbert Young Farmers Club, Hayley holds five positions. She is also the Young

Farmers representative on the Manawatu/Rangitikei Federated Farmers committee. “All these roles take up most of my time outside of work,” said Hayley. “But I enjoy them because I learn a lot and meet a lot of people involved with industries other than dairy.” Hayley would like to progress to lower order sharemilking in June 2019 and continue to increase the size of her herd. “Ultimately, I see myself overseeing multiple farms and employing young people, to give them their first opportunity,” she said. “I would also like to have first-time managers and contract milkers so I can support them and help them learn and embrace new opportunities. Hayley has learnt to manage a large range of staff from teenagers who have never stepped foot on a farm, to staff capable of stepping up to the manager position. “Every person has different needs and motivations,” said Hayley. “My favourite thing is to help people learn about this great industry and learn the skills required and watch them grow and succeed.”

The recent tropical storms which have battered the central North Island have thrown the issue of disaster preparedness into sharp focus. Save Lives

At the major end of the scale, preparing to get through major events such as cyclones is all about forward planning. Check out civildefence. govt.nz to find out what you need in a survival kit should evacuation prove necessary, or if you’re stuck in your home without electricity. For those of us in rural areas, it’s a good idea to have power on demand. A modern battery pack can keep your phone and laptop charged as well as jump start your vehicle — or a generator could prove more than useful in a prolonged power outage. For many, though, it’s the little disasters which prompt the question ‘who can we call?’ Far more common than storms or earthquakes are incidents such as breakdowns, broken windows, busted appliances and stained carpets. For many of these, the solution begins with knowing which local tradespeople will come to you in an

emergency, or where to go for specialist services such as automotive key cutting or gas heater repairs. On the farm, where broken machinery costs in time and profits, knowing who to call to replace that tyre or fix that broken implement is even more vital. With calving season on the way, having a reliable quad bike or UTV in the shed

and a reliable livestock vet on call is of paramount importance. Whether you’re new in an area or a long-term resident, keeping up with the right people to call for minor emergencies is a must. Thankfully, we have plenty of mobile professionals who are ready to jump into the ute, load up the digger or pack tools into the van to see things right.

Our speciality is in installing water tanks, septic tanks, effluent fields and high quality water and UV filtration systems for water tanks. We also service and renew existing filters. Did you know that your filters need servicing and replacing every six months and your UV lamp every 12 months to keep it in optimum working performance? Having a high standard of water quality is something none of us can live without. It ensures healthy water for the whole family, and UV reduces the risk of bacterial infections. The water filters significantly reduce particles getting into the UV system, and the UV lamp deactivates the breeding cycle of bacteria, so they cannot breed in your stomach and make you sick. In addition to regular drainlaying services, we also specialise in helping to resolve flooding issues and storm water drainage, both residential and lifestyle farming, to the best solution we possibly can. Stone age fertilisers by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

The earliest global date for the beginning of the Stone Age is a mere 2.5 million years ago, in Africa. However, the building of topsoil on the planet began from the moment planet Earth was put in motion. The raw materials for topsoil are rocks, in particular basalt rock, which in its molten form captures a full complement of minerals. Our planet is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The tools necessary for building topsoil, are glacial movement of ice flows. As the ice flows it grinds the mountainous rock down to a fine powder; when the ice recedes, it leaves behind, metres deep, of precious mineralised topsoil. Added to this is the interaction of live volcanoes and all the fine rock powder they spew out across

the land. Our planet’s topsoil is basically derived from rock dust. How alive and magic is our ‘living planet’; having the ability to crush multimineral rock dust to build topsoil, to maintain life. All life is dependent upon topsoil and water — these are the two most precious commodities on our planet. Agrissentials are the pioneers of multi-

mineral rock dust blended with fish, seaweed and microorganisms. These fertilisers have the ability to regenerate topsoil by increasing the microorganisms and the worm population within the soil, breaking down all waste and manure, back into topsoil. Both our RokSolid full spectrum fertiliser and our Oceans100 fish and seaweed liquid fertiliser contain more than 63 minerals, all in a natural form and converted by the microorganisms to a plant available form. In this state, the converted minerals taken up by the plant are all recognised at the cellular level, building strong healthy plants, which transfers on to strong healthy animals and people. It’s the ultimate system. Stone Age fertilisers have been pumping away in the soil for millions of years. The introduction of synthetic soluble chemical fertilisers in the last 40 years has witnessed the erosion of our beautiful topsoil, at a rate of 200 to 300 million tonnes a year in NZ alone — that’s unsustainable (Dr Morgan Williams report to the NZ Government 2004). Agrissentials, Stone Age fertilisers, made from ground up rock and blended with fish, seaweed, microorganisms and other plant material, are the ultimate fertilisers for all producing units. All of Agrissentials products evolve out of the environment and as such, are part of the environment and part of nature, nontoxic and completely safe. While the NZ regional councils haggle and hustle over farming, soils, water and the environment, in an effort to keep the ‘agrochemical’ system going, the current chemical problems will continue to destroy our soils and

New regulations for calves – avoiding another kick in the guts for good farmers by Michael Dewhirst

During the past few years, farmers have been criticised for practices relating to bobby calves. Covert filming and negative news items can portray farmers in a bad light. This is frustrating for those who follow best practice. Farmers generally care greatly for their stock, but the rural image suffers when the actions of the few let the industry down. The Ministry for Primary Industries has responded to the criticism by creating the Animal Welfare (Calves) Regulations 2016. These regulations are being implemented in three stages between August 2016 and August 2017. The regulations contain key standards for the care and transport of calves. Failure to comply may result in fines of between $500 and $25,000. It is now a farmer’s obligation to assess if a calf is ‘fit for transport’, and this needs to be rechecked just prior to collection to ensure the calf’s condition has not changed. The farmer must also record the calf’s ‘last feed on farm’, and provide this information to the transport operator. Once at the slaughterhouse, calves must be processed within 24 hours of the last feed on farm.

So, the transport operator must advise this information to the processor. Once calves are cleared for transport, farmers need to ensure that calves are housed in a holding pen that provides shelter, water, ventilation, and is large enough for calves to stand and lie down. The holding pen also needs to be raised or have suitable ramps to allow calves to walk onto the truck without assistance. This may require a new or altered loading facility and shelter to be built at the farm. For most farmers, the new regulations will not require significant change. However, effective communication with your transport operator, processor and livestock agent is key to achieving good animal welfare. For advice on how the regulations may affect you, or for any other rural legal matters, contact us at Dewhirst Law. We understand your business and provide top legal advice at country, not city, prices. See our advertisement on page 3.

New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Come along to our expos and see us at (see below RED BAR for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood Dave had tried everything; pressure and lots more. every time he was overseas he would search for anything “We have testimonials from that could possibly help. people with over fifty years While on one of these of back problems and even overseas trips eight years ago, have them in a number of Dave discovered the Teeter schools in New Zealand for Hang-Ups. “The first time I their special needs children” tried it, the pain disappeared he told me, “the blood to the and I was completely pain brain helps these kids and free for about 30 minutes, the results are excellent” nothing had done that” he What this means for the told me. Dave never believed aging population is that it it would fix him, “as specialists helps maintain the health of had told me it was irrevers- the brain as we all get older. ible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted Dave told me that he some serious relief”. realised that, had he not the Teeter for himself To Dave’s surprise the more tried would still be suffering, “I he used the table the longer he still be a miserable the pain stayed away, until would after nearly three months he grumpy bugger, living with was completely pain free, “I pain, that is why we do the couldn’t believe it’ he told me shows, people need to try it “I had spent large amounts of for themselves” he told me money on every form of treat- “most people actually get ment available and here was off with the pain either gone something I had never heard or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been of sorting it out for me in a talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

MARTON

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

TESTIMONIAL

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

NECK PAIN?

Come along for a free treatment Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Uncommon sense

Functional Fertiliser Ltd have created

Functional Fertiliser Sin

Ministry for the Environment and statistics NZ recently released a damning report showing increasing nitrogen and phosphorus in a percentage of NZ rivers. Surprise surprise! NZ farmers have been brainwashed into thinking that all this phosphate and nitrogen is needed to be profitable. Have these environmental alarmists ever stopped to think that these major fertiliser companies have become billion dollar industries from propaganda to push the sales of the very products these guys make. They have assumed the responsibility to educate students attending NZ educational institutions into the NPK propaganda machine who then go out and advise farmers to push it on. The sooner the proponents of environmental improvement refocus on the cause, the faster these challenges will be achieved. There are great changes beginning where farmers are utilising real science rather than following the NPK accepted principles that grow grass but don’t strictly follow scientific principles. There is accurate data and case studies demonstrating amazing results including better animal health, higher production and higher profit with as

little as 80kg N/ha applied, which is the sort of targets we should be seeking. General farmer usage would be around 200 to 250kg N/ha. Education is the best way forward rather than the threat of enforcement of more rules and reduction of our great farming future. This education has got to start with the consultants who are talking to farmers and giving them the advice. Consultants are the very people who can affect farmers change because they are who farmers trust and seek advice from. Currently, this radical change to drastically reduce nitrogen and phosphate use unnecessarily is coming from farmers who are entrepreneurs and can think outside the square. These very farmers have gone out of their way to reeducate themselves and have found a better path. The biggest challenge to this change is coming from their trusty consultants who put doubt into this new path. If farmers and consultants feel challenged to act, please contact me.

Brainwashed The clean rivers plan, which is sweeping the country, is to drastically reduce nitrogen applications on farm, based on historical data. For farmers hell-bent on trying to mitigate too many changes in management in future will be looking at management now to alter that data. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduct that one such tool would be to drastically increase nitrogen use now therefore boosting historical data, which will be used to determine their future allocation. This whole scandal has arisen because farmers have been brainwashed into thinking that urea grows grass and that profitability will drop correspondingly as that nitrogen is reduced. This new environmental report is calling for a drastic reduction in cow numbers, which would be akin to the idea of drastically reducing cars to cut the road toll! Some common sense is needed here, and I would hate to see people with this line of thinking being able to determine the direction of our farming future. It sickens me to see that the culprits of this whole problem of excess nitrates and phosphorus in our rivers have never been called to account. I am not talking about farmers here, although they are the ones copping the flak. I am talking about the major NPK fertiliser companies who sell 90% of the phosphorus and nitrogen in NZ and have been for the past 20-plus years.

Should I take Coenzyme Q10?

SupaScoota folding mobility scooters and chairs ‘put the joy back into your journey’.

Part 2 Most people make all the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) they need. Some however should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzyme that makes cholesterol. This is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can restrict CoQ10 by as much as 50%. This can reduce the amount of energy made especially in organs and muscles and is why I recommend people on cholesterol medication take 100–200mg of rapid absorption CoQsol® each day. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a week on CoQ10 the pain had completely gone. I generally find it takes 1–2 months to restore muscle function and energy. What makes CoQ10 so special is its ability to carry electrons. This enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make energy molecules called ATP. This ATP is how your body works. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness.

This ability to carry electrons also makes CoQ10 an excellent antioxidant. It can donate to free radicals their missing electrons preventing them from stealing electrons leading to cell and tissue damage. In particular it protects circulating LDL cholesterol from being damaged by free radicals. This is the first step in the process of forming plaques that block arteries. There is some good research suggesting increasing CoQ10 can be helpful for people with neurodegenerative problems such as Parkinson’s. I will generally add additional CoQ10 either as the patented CoQsol® or my specialised MTQ10. Most people feel a real difference within 1–2 months. Give me a call if you need more information. They enjoy being able to get out and about easily and safely,” said Alan. “It’s the convenience of putting the scooter in a small car and being able to go into town and do your shopping or to a cafe, and go places that you wouldn’t normally go. SupaScoota gives you back your freedom. “They are affordably priced and give owners the freedom to go on planes, in cars or even on a cruise. It is putting the joy back into your journey.” The standard model has a super tight turning circle for indoor and outdoor use with a comfortable seat and armrests with heaps of legroom, electronic stability control for extra safety, and it

automatically slows down when you are turning. The heavy duty scooter has a dual motor system that makes light work of pavement and steep hills so users can go anywhere with total security, and the heavy duty sport model comes with all the features of the heavyduty version but has a larger frame and wheels and is suitable for more demanding users. The fold-up power chair is also available and is a two-in-one item. The chair can be used as a normal wheelchair or can be battery powered and travels at approximately nine kilometres per hour. The power controller is connected to the arm rest and can be fitted to the left or right, or it can be fitted to the rear attendant handles and can be driven from the rear. No more huffing and puffing up those hills. Each battery lasts approximately 10km and a second battery can be purchased for convenience. The total weight of each scooter is around 36kg, and when folded up the heaviest part is 9.6kg. Risk of nitrate poisoning Summer droughts followed by the recent heavy rainfall will result in higher than normal nitrate levels in the soil, putting stock at increased risk of nitrate poisoning according to Ravensdown experts, Jeremy Klingender, Agronomist and Seed Product Manager, and Dr Julie Wagner, vet and Ravensdown Animal Health Product Manager. “Any farmer will be thrilled to see their crop or pasture shooting up after the recent rain, but the downside is that it’s likely it will be very high in nitrate levels. This can be fatal for your stock if not managed and monitored properly,” said Jeremy. He says there are four key things to watch out for when identifying a paddock that should be tested — fast growing crops, younger pastures (under 21 days’ rotation), overcast days and high soil temperatures. “High soil temperatures speed up the conversion of ammonia to nitrate in the soil making more available for the plant and the cow. Overcast days stop the photosynthesis process and put higher nitrate levels in the pasture, especially in the mornings and evenings, that’s why early afternoon grazing is better.” Certain plant species are more at risk of high nitrate levels such as ryegrasses, brassica crops, maize and oats. Dr Wagner says it is important to remember the hay and silages from these crops are not exempt from the toxicity issues. “Farmers need to be herbage and feed testing before grazing, and if they have concerns they should

take their stock off immediately. We can do urgent nitrate tests, which are turned around in a day, but the essential thing to do is transition your stock slowly onto paddocks or feeds that are high in nitrates. “Starting your cattle off with an

hour grazing after a feed of hay or silage early to mid-afternoon means they’ll be less likely to gorge. Don’t put stock that are hungry on ‘at risk’ crops or pastures and monitor your stock closely, removing them at the first sign of trouble.”

Custom satisfaction

Ford’s record of success with the Ranger ute rolls on into 2017, with the big blue oval brand preparing themselves for another blockbuster visit to Mystery Creek in the mid-year. But there’s something else afoot before the Field Days fun, and it’s caused a literal blackout. Ford has always been big sponsors and fans of the All Blacks, and ahead of the forthcoming British Lions tour it has released a special edition of both the Ranger and the Everest sports utility, all tricked out in a new, deeper shade of midnight black and all garnished with extra add-ons such as nudge bars, interior detailing, roll bars and massive mag wheels. The overall impression of the FX4 Ranger is of a machine as solidly planted as the All Black’s defensive line and as aggressive as their forwards. That’s entirely the idea, of course — and it feeds into an emerging trend for the new generation of ute owners to want something different. When muscle cars were all the rage in the 1970s, nobody wanted a stock model off the yard. Everyone wanted the limited edition, tuned, pinstriped, candy-flake paint job hot-rod version. It’s becoming a similar world in the top end of the emerging Kiwi super-ute culture, one which mirrors the truck modding exploits of America’s F150 and Dodge Ram owners. Not content with being one of a huge number of drivers who now take advantage of the comfort and space of the 21st century light commercial by

THE NEW 2017

Not content with being one of the pack, many Ranger drivers now demand custom special editions to really stand out

making it their daily ride — and thus blending into the crowd — those with the need to be seen are embracing special editions like the FX4 with both hands. It’s not just this big black tribute to the ABs which is so coveted. Before Ford’s designers added the custom blackout to their top selling ute there have been others taking the initiative. Customised ‘stealth’ edition Ranger utes appeared on the North Shore, boosting the image above and beyond that of the factory-specced Wildtrak. Then a series of West Coast Edition

Rangers were created in Dargaville, in the West Kaipara, with a variety of combinations of LED lamps, bars, mags, tyres, detailing and interior finishes. So far, no two have been the same, and they have been sold as far away as the West Coast — of the South Island! With other brands such as Nissan releasing special edition utes too — witness the tough-as-nails Barbarian custom Navara — New Zealand has a new status symbol. The custom ute — and by extension, the custom Ford Ranger — is the new king of the highway.

Dial R for reputation by Andy Bryenton

Pedigree. It’s an all important factor in the world of automobiles — the difference between a new up and coming supercar like the Koenigsegg and an old and established marque like Lamborghini. Both are blisteringly fast, but one is the stuff of petrolhead dreams just because of the name. The thing is, that name has to be earned, and backed up with solid performances, building one on the other every time a new machine hits the tarmac. So it is with the Honda Civic Type R — a strange case in point indeed. With its roots firmly planted in the stolid dependability of the Civic, that extra letter has meant poise and power for 30 years. Here comes the anniversary, then, and a new model for 2017, which aims a withering broadside at not just the other Japanese automakers, but at the best of Europe as well. Honda picked a great way to assert its dominance as it launched the sleek, sharp new Civic Type R. Those slippery lines, festooned with gills, splitters, spoilers and blades cut through the chilly air at the Nurburgring in Germany on the morning of April 2, preparing to smash some records. When the dust settled the new Honda had blitzed the 20-kilometre ‘green hell’ in just 7 minutes 43.8 seconds. That’s the fastest time ever posted by a front

wheel drive car, breaking the record set by VW’s Golf Clubsport. It’s a whole seven seconds faster than the old Type R, which in motor racing terms is a geological age. It’s a testament to the sheer attention to detail which has been lavished on this predatory-looking road missile. Even the stand out triple exhaust system is cleverly designed with a smaller central pipe to create a precisely tuned sound at both low and high revs. Handling has been tuned to razor precision, and the power from the two-litre, double-overhead-cam turbo i-VTEC engine hits the ground through a six-speed manual box. This, then, is a driver’s car pure and simple. And the best news of all — it’s coming to New Zealand. While we don’t have the twists and turns of Germany’s most famous racetrack, we certainly have the wide range of surfaces, corners and straights represented there. No word yet on price, but fans of the big red R will be fixated on that other number — 7:43.8 — more than any other.

Black magic — aerodynamics makes the Civic Type R slippery, while power comes from a new breed of VTEC engine
