Although last year was a challenging season for the rural sector due to Mycoplasma bovis, farmers still managed to raise $650,000 through calf donations to the scheme. IHC national manager fundraising Greg Millar said despite falling short of the IHC’s one million dollars target; it was great to see the rural community continue to support the cause. “The Calf and Rural Scheme will continue, with this year more important than ever. “While the process of the scheme has changed, its purpose has not; to make a real difference to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, particularly those living in rural communities. Now, more than ever, we need your support,” said Mr Millar. Since its launch in 1984, the IHC New Zealand Calf Scheme fast gained the support of the dairy industry. The scheme is off to a good start this year with pledges of calves already received.

Pay attention!

Mr Millar said farmers are now asked to arrange transport of their IHC calves, along with their own calves, to the sales. “Many farmers have told us they prefer this system, as it is more convenient to send the calf or calves at a time that suits them.” The sale of that particular tagged calf will be donated to IHC from any saleyard in New Zealand. “If you aren’t able to send your calf or calves to sale with your own lot, IHC can pay to get it there,” Millar said. “You just need to organise this with your local transporter and let us know.” IHC acknowledges the ongoing support of PGG Wrightson Livestock, which has been involved with the scheme for more than 30 years. For those who wish to donate in lieu of a calf, the IHC Virtual Calf Scheme option is still available via the IHC website ihc.org.nz/calf or phone 0800 442 500.

Zero Carbon bill draws mixed response

3

The government’s recent delivery of landmark action on climate change has drawn a mixed response from Federated Farmers. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the introduction of the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment bill to parliament would address the longterm challenge of climate change. “We’ve built a practical consensus across government that creates a plan for the next 30 years, which provides the certainty industries need to get ahead. “Carbon is the most important thing we need to tackle — that’s why we’ve taken a net zero carbon approach,” she said. “Agriculture is incredibly important to New Zealand, but it also needs to be part of the solution. That is why we have listened to the science and also heard the industry and created a specific target for biogenic methane.” Federated Farmers New Zealand is on board with the purpose and framework of the Zero Carbon bill; however, the rural advocacy organisation believes the methane target has no grounding in science or economic sense. Federated Farmers vice president Andrew Hoggard is the spokesperson on climate change. “Criticism from New Zealand First that Feds are being unreasonable with our comments on the flaws in the Zero Carbon bill’s targets are of concern,” he said. He said Federated Farmers supported the Labour/NZ First/Green proposals to establish a framework to tackle global warming and they are grateful for New Zealand First’s continued efforts to get a fair deal for the agricultural sector on a number of fronts. “We’ll take the net-zero nitrous oxide by 2050 target on the chin, and we’ll work with other New Zealanders to get

carbon dioxide to net zero as well. While we appreciate the coalition government has taken a twoGodfrey Hirst & Feltex Carpet and Hard Flooring basket approach to greenhouse ∙ NO REPAYMENTS gases, Federated Farmers is ∙ NO INTEREST adamant that the methane targets (*Minimum spend $1000 off ends 31 May 2019) are unjustified and Herculean compared to what’s expected of YOUR FLOORING FOUNDATION STORE other sectors.” 691 Main St, Terrace End, Palmerston North Primary sectors requested a split gases approach so that the significantly different effect of short-lived gases (methane) could be recognised from the long lasting and cumulative global PH 06 354 2755 OR 027 571 8901 EMAIL: ayoung@rangitikeifloorings.com warming effect of long-lived gases (nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide). “The science is clear that this level of methane emission reduction is only needed by 2050 to have no additional impact on global warming, but farmers are Federated Farmers vice president and climate change being expected to shoulder their spokesperson, Andrew Hoggard share of tackling climate change 20 years earlier than anyone else.” He said the second target, a reduction of methane between 24 to 47% by 2050, For sale: • Hay, round and medium square bales has been plucked out of two heavily caveated reports with a large number • Balage round bales of scenarios. • Straw medium square bales “All of these scenarios, but one, involve new technologies not yet WE DELIVER! available, or a technology the current MIKE: 027 442 4997 CONTRACTING LTD government does not support the 0800 CROP IT (0800 276 748) BRUCE GORDON: 027 442 7462 use of genetic engineering. The one exception involves retrenchment from pastoral farming.” Mr Hoggard said the livestock sector wants to do its part. “We are supportive of the Zero Carbon bill but not methane targets that will ravage farmer livelihoods, provincial communities and the national economy.”

INSPIRED TO FLY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN NZI Rural Womens’ business awards — Rural Champion winner Fly My Sky owners Robyn and Keith McKenzie were living in a caravan by a river on the west coast in the early 1970s after returning from Australia where Keith gained his helicopter pilots’ licence.

T

he company won the award with Robyn being a director of the business. “Australia was the nearest place for a New Zealander to train to be a helicopter pilot and the west coast was the only job Keith could get in New Zealand,” says Robyn. “He was working on venison recovery with Helicopters NZ, a Nelson-based company. Other helicopter operations were owned by the pilots, and that inspired us to do the same.” In 1980 Keith was chief pilot for James Aviation, and the company decided to close their helicopter base

in Taumarunui, so the couple purchased it. “The opportunity was rare, and we borrowed almost all the money. We had two young children and whilst Keith flew I canvassed for helicopter work. We managed to pay the loan back in five years.” The McKenzies have since provided transport services, rescue missions and a variety of services for people in rural situations. “We opened a twice a day, rural scheduled flight service between Auckland and Whangarei days before Fly My Sky was a winner at the awards. of our brand,” says Robyn. “For Keith one of the most memorable missions was helping a police officer capture a mass murderer in hilly mountainous terrain, which he knew like the back of his hand. “They both were aware of the unpredictable mental state of the person but armed with intense local knowledge, helicopter skills learnt through mustering cattle around trees in Australia, plus the power of the Hughes 500D helicopter, they captured the offender before more tragedy occurred.” Keith was awarded a QSM for his assistance to police and community. They have completed many other missions including going to a young boy who had a fatal horse accident. Robyn says such memories highlight the perils of remote living. Keith has more than 23,000 hours rural flying experience and was an instructor on planes and helicopters. “His has amazing stories from all over New Zealand. He has helped build the ski lifts on Ruapehu and the Remarkables. He is used to different weather conditions and going from tarmac to grass landing strips. He had retired but has returned to teach the younger pilots.“ Flying to Great Barrier Island is also a regular service, and takes 30 minutes from Auckland. “People on Great Barrier Island have been attending Rural Women’s Network for some 70 years and participate in

things like educational programmes for children and knitting beanies for babies. They have speakers from all over the world visit, and it is awesome to fly to the island daily and hear encouraging stories. The barrier is like going overseas, and the beautiful beaches are very invigorating with clear water. “It is a nice place for farmers to have a retreat — they go fishing and walk the beaches or up Mt Hobson. The landscape is always changing, and you can book a boat tour. The wildlife is wonderful including the brown duck, which is endangered. “Sixty-five per cent of the island is conservation estate, and they are regenerating the kauri trees as the original were cut down to make boats in the 1920s. “Because we are a lifestyle company we sold the helicopter and now have four planes. Winning the rural women award was really encouraging and validating for what we do. I have met some amazing people, and it is exciting to be a part of the organisation. I am so busy at work it is a challenge to get out, and it is the same for women in farming — you can become isolated, and I firmly believe rural women has an amazing support network. “We want to build a quick and efficient service to Whangarei as it is handy for Northland residents. We fly on charter to other areas across the country and can land at the small community airfields as well as the provincial airports. If there is

a group of nine, it spreads the costs and sometimes makes sense in efficiency and time to get to a city, another area or international flight from Auckland. The future is encouraging, and these services help farmers to be able to

attend seminars and even get away for a night. It is a privilege to be a part of all that goes on around the countryside of New Zealand. “Every part of what we do helps others in one way or another.”

BY DENISE GUNN Stock manager Alex Field’s dairy farming background, along with a varied range of practical experience, paid dividends when he began studying towards a diploma in rural business.

A

lex grew up in Apiti where his mother worked on a dairy farm. Although Alex tried his hand at dairying, he found it wasn’t for him. Instead, he followed his brothers around shepherding, learning the tricks of the trade. There was no time for relaxing during school holidays either. Instead, Alex worked and trapped possums to earn some cash. “After I met a few people, I started working for the odd farmer here and there.”

Alex started chasing a few sheep around the yards. Then, as his skills developed, he picked up a drench gun. “A drench gun became a handpiece, and at one point I even had a pair of loppers in my hands pruning trees. “All these little jobs, tied in with a dairy background, helped me out with study when I moved down to Telford.” When Alex graduated with a rural business diploma from Balclutha-based agricultural training centre Telford, he moved to Southland, working on a couple

of finishing farms. It was there that he was introduced to Young Farmers. “A work colleague dragged me along to a meeting. I’ve been a member ever since.” When Alex’s work on the finishing farms ended, he moved to the Waikato. Due to remoteness his involvement with Young Farmers, was smaller. After spending a year working with genetics and service bulls in the Waikato, he moved to his current position as stock manager on Tunnel Hill at Turakina. The 1,000ha property runs 3,200 Romney breeding ewes and 310 Angus breeding cows, grows 150ha of maize grain and has 220ha in production forestry. “We lamb in June and process the first lambs in October. The aim is to have the first spring lamb on supermarket shelves. Lamb is also exported yearround to 12 countries.” As a sole-charge stock manager, Alex is tasked with the day-to-day farm operations to keep the place running smoothly and efficiently. “Tunnel Hill is an intensive farm. Ewes are heavily shepherded at lambing and calves are tagged at birth. This means winter, yes winter, is very busy. Given its unique coastal attributes, lambing starts in June. Lambs are weaned in October. They are sold under the brand Coastal Spring Lamb, which is another unique aspect of this job.” Alex is currently vice-chairman of the local Marton Young Farmers. He said it’s the people who make Young Farmers enjoyable. “From that person who lends you a hand when you need it, to watching the young one fresh out of school grow into a fully-functioning adult who passes on

Tunnel Hill runs 3,200 Romney breeding ewes their skills to the next young’ un to walk through the doors. It takes good people to make Young Farmers work, and it’s those good people that make it great.” A competitive nature has seen Alex compete in three district Young Farmers contests. This year, he won the Taranaki/ Manawatu FMG Young Farmer of the Year. His win has secured him a spot in the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final to be held in Hawke’s Bay in July. As the youngest of six children, Alex is no stranger to competition. “If I wasn’t into competing, I was hungry,” he said. Alex and his partner, Ashleigh, are working towards getting

their name on a farm lease. “Not too concerned on the size, but we are looking to get our foot in the door, so we can start the climb of the ladder. “I dream of what every little boy dreams of — having your name on a bit of land. The farm that you can call your own. It’s not going to be easy but when is anything good easy.” “It’s always been farming. Never any other options. Simple as that,” he said.

MANY HIGHLIGHTS FOR RURAL FESTIVAL by Denise Gunn A Viking’s head, a bull tahr and a six-metre tall dandelion were among the winning entries at this year’s Kimbolton Sculpture Festival.

N

ow into its second year, the festival drew a crowd of more than 3,600 people, including rural sculptors from as far as Ashburton to Napier. Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust chairman Tony Waugh said the festival is an opportunity for rural people to have a go. “Many issues face farmers in New Zealand; this is a way of bringing people together and doing something more practical than just talking about the challenges we face.” A wide range of materials was carefully crafted into sculptures to reflect farming and outdoor life. Ashburton butcher Stuart Mitchell won the top prize with his

entry titled Bull Thar made from a bike chain, old tools, trailer and car parts. “The idea came from not being able to shoot one, so I made one. Being from the South Island, Ashburton, they are a popular hunt,” said Stuart. “The whole sculpture took about six months, just adding bits now and then after work and weekends.” Stuar t’s sculpture impressed the judges. “The spirit and form of this wild animal are captured wonderfully with a complex integration of scrap metal elements,” they said. As a bonus, Stuart sold his winning work along with another he had

entered in the New Zealand Small Sculpture Award. Last year, Stuart won the Best Small Sculpture. The People’s Choice Award went to the winner of the Creative Cocky Award, Massey University student Sophie Coleman. Sophie sculptured a sixmetre tall dandelion, Big Wishes, from corrugated iron, pipe and wire. It was Sophie’s first year entering the festival and also the only sculpture she had ever created. It took her hundreds of hours for five months to create; the 19-year-old used 390 metres of wire, 43 metres of pipe from gates, 15 sheets of corrugated iron and a ballcock. Sophie liked the idea of supersizing something that was very small in nature and decided on a giant 200:1 dandelion. “The scale factor 200:1came from working out just how much the wire could handle when creating the 92 dandelion parachutes. I then catered to that maximum to make it as big as I possibly could. “Seeing as it was so large, I had to make sure it was easily disassembled but still with a base strong enough, through careful planning, to hold the weight of the seed head.” Sophie said her sculpture aimed to symbolise happiness and the simple joys of life. Judges said Big Wishes was on an Alice in Wonderland scale, making creative use of simple materials. An anonymous purchaser bought Sophie’s sculpture and donated it to the

organising trust to put on public display in the Kimbolton village. Local garage owner and last year’s overall winner, Terry Hawkins, took out the Local Yokel award with his Wally the Viking sculpture. Terry owns and runs the Kimbolton Garage, working on his sculptures in the evenings or weekends. Judges described Terry’s sculpture as a stunning work that masterfully integrates an impressive variety of metal components. The runner-up award went to Pam Corpe from Beaconsfield with her copper figure based on herself in firefighting kit. Pam’s sculpture was made from three copper hot water cylinders subjected to “a lot of bashing with hammers”. First-time entrant Paul Andersen won the Small Sculpture Award with his Singer Tractor, which was expertly crafted from an old Singer sewing machine. Paul used parts from a fridge, cutlery, pushbike and car to create several different models including a steam roller, tractor, racing car and motorcycle. He estimates spending close to 20 hours creating his winning model but twice as many thinking about and planning it. Youth awards were won by students from new entrants to secondary school ages, with Kimbolton School’s Pukeko Room taking the preschool and primary group awards. The 2020 Kimbolton Sculpture Festival is shaping up to be even larger. “We are looking at new ‘have a go’ awards and some potentially exciting festival highlights,” said Tony.

Promises and shortfalls by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

For all the government’s talk of wellbeing and fairness, its deliveries to date have been bad for New Zealand families and have hit the poor harder than most. What is fair about the median rent going up by $50 a week under this government? How has well-being improved for the extra 13,000 New Zealanders now on a benefit? What stories of heartbreak are behind a more-than-tripling of emergency housing grants? Five months into 2019, it is worth reflecting on the things that the government vowed to deliver and the ones that can already be called a fail. It’s a long list, so we’re giving a representative cross-section. The government said it would boost the number of sworn frontline police by 1,800 by November 2020, but it‘s already clear it won’t deliver. Many New Zealanders would assume housing, and in particular social housing, would have been a priority for the government. The prime minister cited KiwiBuild when she debuted her ‘year of delivery’ slogan. KiwiBuild has been allocated $2 billion, and all it has delivered is a few dozen houses. That’s despite the government talking big on housing and hiring public relations consultants. A failure to deliver and a shambles. Annual economic growth has slowed from about four per cent to just above

two per cent. Growth for each person stalled in the most recent two quarters, which means the only driver of economic growth is a bigger population. The finance minister also talked about jobs growth back in December 2017 but fast-forward to 2019, and we’re going backwards. The number of New Zealanders with jobs fell by 4,000 in the past three months. Under National, new jobs created at a rate of 10,000 a month. Budget 2019 has $95 million for four years for 3,280 extra teachers. The package falls well short of the ministry’s estimate that more than 8,000 extra teachers will be needed in classrooms over the next five years. Rounding out the short-list of non-deliveries is the Provincial Growth Fund, a $3 billion payback to NZ First for allowing Labour to win the Treasury benches. The Minister for Regional Economic Development boasted that 10,000 jobs could be created by the PGF but on closer inspection could only find 562. National could only find 54, and the minister has now become coy about the numbers. The likely verdict? Another failure to deliver. The prime minister’s declaration that 2019 is the ‘year of delivery’ will come back to haunt her.

ADVERTORIAL

How much better can I be? by John Arts, Abundant Health

(Part two) Despondency is a common obstacle to healing. The nagging thought that you will not be able to improve can affect our ability to make decisions. After speaking to so many people, you get the feeling that some people are just stuck in their problem. However, my client files are full of stories from people who had the courage to try something different. Last year I helped someone really troubled by joint pain in her hands, feet and hips. That had restricted her to the point that simple things like gardening were a challenge. To make it worst she had a lot of pain at night affecting the quality of sleep. She had been taking a traditional high glucosamine joint product with little result. She had been doing lots of good things such as a diet high in omega-3. While I made further dietary suggestions, most of the benefit came from adding a high chondroitin supplement. A therapeutic level of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important measure to improve comfort with arthritic joints. In

Europe medical doctors regularly prescribe chondroitin. We started at 1,600mg of highgrade chondroitin, which also had 1600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of high-grade curcumin (from turmeric). After only a few months she had much less pain both in the daytime and at night and was able to enjoy gardening and other things that had become difficult. I see healing as a three-step process. The first is to gather relevant information and an honest appraisal of the situation. We then create an action plan based on healthy eating, appropriate supplements and lifestyle changes. The third is re-evaluation to make sure that the client is getting the best possible results. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Who are you going to call? Praising the mobile workshop

by Andy Bryenton

The concept of calling in the professionals is not a new one, and there are plenty of records from ancient times of folks needing that extra bit of help, which was delivered by horse and cart. Some of our oldest written language comes from a clay slab dug up from the Iraqi Desert, dated to the Sumerian people of 5,000 years ago before Egypt was much more than a collection of huts next to the Nile. It’s a complaint about a bill for fixing a leaky roof. From the days of the old draught horse, when the great guilds of tradespeople were established (the most famous of which went on to become the modern charitable society, the Freemasons) through to colonial times, when farmers called in traction engines to shuttle plough their fields and process hay into bales, it’s been the same story. Help! We have a job to do, time is not

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

on our side, and we don’t have the specialist tools and expertise to go it alone. What all of these people have needed, from the horse rider looking for a mobile farrier through to the medieval king sending out for engineers to make his castle impregnable to Vikings, is a mobile workshop. These days there’s not much call for massive fortifications, as Vikings are fairly thin on the ground. When the movie industry needs a model castle, or, more prosaically, when the average farmer needs tractor repairs, a new water heater or an electrical fix, they turn to the tradesman’s best friend, the white van. Note that the colour can change according to signwriting and

branding, but the definition is as generic as ‘sticky tape’. There is a particular type of vehicle, which is purpose-built for western tradespeople to use as a combination office, tea break room, workshop and toolbox.

It all begins with the Ford Transit, the original tradesperson’s van from the 1950s. You’ll see them carrying BBC camera equipment in the background of shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The truth is, the original comes not

It was not until 1965 that the bulldognosed Transit we all know came into production, and it was initially a hit with crooks and cops rather than builders and plumbers. Robbers from the ‘old firm’ days when the Kray brothers ruled the London underworld loved how much loot you could pack in the nondescript but lively Transit; the law loved how many constables you could ferry to a fracas in the back. One of these 1960s Transits holds the record for longest service. It’s still on the road today after going all the way round the clock, a distance comparable to a moon mission, and it belongs to a plumbing firm in (appropriately) Bath, England. Here in New Zealand, the Transit Van and its opposite number from the Holden and General Motors stable, the venerable Bedford J series, have been transformed into everything from farming flat decks to ambulances. You can still see Bedford ambulance camper vans at holiday hot spots each summer, next to another mobile workshop on wheels, the ice cream truck. The Japanese and Korean marques have made their mark in recent decades, with the Hiace, L300 and their ilk muscling into a territory where Ford still produces a dominant product. Nowadays, the farmer or business owner in need of fast response can summon a mobile welder, tyre service, diesel mechanic, or builder with their mobile phone. The man in the van is less likely to get lost along the way thanks to GPS. There have been some big advances in miniaturising the gear,

which slides into the back of these highmileage, hard-working vans, meaning that more tools can be powered from a simple inverter and battery array. Where would we be without the tradesperson’s van? In a world where you can summon up a mobile taxidermist, podiatrist, tattoo artist, dentist or sushi chef, we take it for granted, perhaps, that more prosaic trades such as electricians and painters are out there

Electric tools come of age by Andy Bryenton

No so long ago petrol was king when it came to handling outdoor power, and the average tradesperson would carry a can of two-stroke mix everywhere. Times have changed, and there are now some serious tools which run exclusively off electricity, raising the possibility of charging up a whole array of batteries direct via inverter from the ute or van itself. These are no weak or retiring versions of their petrol counterparts either. Here are three of the best, which are beloved of modern trade professionals, and might be a good match around the farm as well. Stihl invented the world’s first electric cut off saw specifically for those circumstances where it’s too far to run an extension cable. Compact and lighter than its petrol opposite number, the TSA 230 can cut tiles to size, bricks for masonry projects, and even comes with an abrasive wheel to slice steel like a roast dinner. Weighing in at 3.9 kilograms, the TSA 230 can cut to a depth of 70mm and keep going continually for up to 15 minutes on a single battery. That’s a quarter hour of powering through stone and steel, which is pretty impressive. Makita has made cordless drills for years now, but they have upped the ante with the super powerful DHR 242Z. A hammer drill, which is as serious as those that run a cable or

even a small petrol motor, this monster weighs far less than you might think and can tackle drilling tasks into the toughest materials. It’s also designed to fit Makita’s portable dust extraction system, and it has an easy to operate slide chuck for quick switch-out of bits. Husqvarna is as at home with chainsaws as Makita are with drills, but once again their cordless range is a step up in practicality and power. Take, for example, the 535i XP, a chainsaw, which weighs less than its petrol

stablemates but has been designed with the carpenter and tradie in mind as well as the home firewood user. Quieter, with less vibration and lower maintenance costs, this saw can even be attached to a battery backpack for all-day use without a recharge and far from power points.

Call the professionals for safety

Rural New Zealand is a place, which tends to favour the multiskilled; after all, there’s so many things to do around the farm or even the rural home that it’s good to develop a wide range of abilities to fix, mend, renew and restore those things that fail due to wear and tear. The big jobs sometimes require a professional approach, especially when it comes to those tasks that are a bit out of the ordinary. It is doubly true for those that take place off the ground, such as repairing roofing and guttering or taking care of overgrown trees. According to ACC statistics, the most dangerous thing in the tool shed is not a saw or hammer, but a ladder, with $17 million in injury claims a year recorded from ladder accidents. That statistic goes up as the age of the ladder user goes up, too; a fact accident analysts put down to the cando attitude of our older generation, who are used to tackling tasks themselves. Relatively recent changes to the rules about working above a certain height have recognised the perils of falling and of poorly supported surfaces, leading to the requirement for professional tradespeople to erect scaffolding or use a secured harness in many aerial

applications. While prudent, this had also added to the time and cost of undertaking such projects, leading many people to try to go it alone. This time of year is especially busy when it comes to getting off the ground, with gutters to clean, roof leaks to repair and dead tree limbs to cut down before storms drop them. The overwhelming message from health care providers is to be careful, assess the situation, and in any doubt as to your equipment and abilities, call the professionals. The reasoning is clear when a 2006 British study is taken into account. Of 200,000 cases of do-it-yourself injury (in one year, but not the larger population of Great Britain), more than half required time off work, and all, by definition, required a trip to the doctor. Assuming that due to injury the job was not completed successfully, that’s 200,000 cases where the expense of time off, recuperation, treatment and

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ?

The origins of a Kiwi tradition by Andy Bryenton

As far back as most dairy farmers can remember, June 1 has been called Gypsy Day; the time of year when farms changed hands and sharemilkers took to the roads to move to their new pastures for the season. Digging deeper to find out why this is the case reveals a couple of interesting points. The first of which, of course, is that this day has nothing at all to do with the Roma people of Europe, the original Gypsies, who, along with the Irish Travellers, make up the largest nomadic culture remaining in the developed world. The name is a nod to the way these folk would travel the roadways in ancient times, with all their possessions and their livestock in tow.

It’s a romanticised notion of life on the road, but one that resonated with our colonial forebears, who, once a year would see cows and wagons lining the rural roads as farms changed hands. Nevertheless, why June 1? The day seems arbitrary, but the effects are real. Schools see enrolments jump around this time, those tradespeople who renovate homes are busy in the rural heartland, and hundreds of millions of dollars change hands as properties are

sold. One theory holds that the timing is to do with the date of cows drying off before calving, but this varies according to climate and stock genetics. Another holds that the date was set in order to get the new farm squared away before winter struck. However, the oldest records point to the date set not by farmers but by clerks, at the State Advances Corporation in the 1890s. This body was set up to lend money to settlers for creating new farms, and the powers that be expected

their money back as the farm flourished. June 1 was set as a date different from the end of the corporate year, but also to enable physical messages to reach London, still the hub of commerce, by ship, before the end of the British business year. In those days of manual transactions, paper deeds and no radio or internet, setting a single day for major farming transactions made it easy to get everyone on the same page. That’s why June 1 is still a busy time to this day, and why it carries such an interesting name.

Chainsaw education a priority

sally

The chainsaw is an indispensable labour-saving aid used by thousands of New Zealand farmers, firewood gatherers and other non-vocational users. It makes light work of felling and cutting up trees, but a chainsaw deserves to be treated with respect. Carelessly used, inadequately maintained or incorrectly equipped, a chainsaw can be a lethal weapon. WorkSafe is concerned at the number of accidents involving chainsaws in the workplace and has produced this guideline for anyone who is an occasional chainsaw user. All-Tree Services are increasingly hearing from businesses and the general public that they understand the importance of focussing on critical risks — the risks that can kill people or cause them life-changing harm. The best way to prevent serious incidents is to focus on controlling these critical risks, training, and education along with a firm understanding of how to maintain and use a chainsaw currently is a must. Too many people buy a chainsaw without a full understanding of what can happen if not educated on how to use it correctly. All-Tree Services have put together a one-day Chainsaw Operation and Safety Competency Course — costeffective at $175 per person and are running them monthly. We cater to individuals that have purchased their first chainsaw, those

Methane reduction unrealistic

Deer Industry New Zealand is disappointed by the government’s announced emissions reduction targets for agriculture. “Under current conditions, these targets would result in significant reductions in stock numbers.” says chair of Deer Industry New Zealand, Dr Ian Walker. “Even if tools and technologies were available to reduce methane and nitrous oxide in the future, the level of reduction would effectively mean that the agriculture sector was being asked not just to cease its own contribution to global warming, but also offset the contribution of other sectors. “The deer industry as part of the pastoral sector is prepared to play its part in climate change mitigation. We Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

call 0800 436 566 or visit www.dolomite.co.nz

do not deny human-induced climate change nor our responsibility to mitigate. The pastoral sector is willing to target net zero global warming impact from agricultural gasses, but the targets for methane announced by the government go beyond net zero global warming impact. DINZ cannot support these targets. “The rationale for methane to be reduced by anything between 24 per cent and 47 per cent by 2050 has not been made clear to us. We can only assume that the government expects agriculture to make ‘headroom’ for other sectors to continue emitting.” Dr Walker says this is unfair for the sector, but also a bad choice for New Zealand because in the absence of new mitigation technology. A 47 per cent reduction in agricultural methane emissions will require a 47 per cent reduction in pastoral farming outputs. That could reduce rural employment and export revenues from

meat, milk and fibre by half, or about $12 billion a year. “The government has expressed no plan for how this employment and export revenue could be replaced and New Zealanders’ living standards maintained. Reducing agricultural methane emissions is a temporary solution; it buys time but does not address the fundamental cause of climate change, which is the release of fossil carbon into the atmosphere. “The deer industry alongside other pastoral industries supports the pastoral sector reducing nitrous oxide to net zero and gradually reducing and stabilising emissions of methane so that its levels in the atmosphere do not increase. “Accepted atmospheric science suggests that current annual reductions of 0.3 per cent in agricultural methane will result in a 10 per cent reduction by 2050 and ensure that the gas causes no additional atmospheric warming. “The pastoral sector including DINZ will continue to support research on agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation options and development of a robust framework to enable farms to transition to lower emissions.

Dr Ian Walker, Deer Industry New Zealand chair

“DINZ considers there is little sense in sacrificing New Zealand’s economic backbone when all this does, is delay the need for New Zealand and all other countries to address the fundamental issues of fossil fuel emissions.”

A letter to farmers

DAIRY

DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand met with Minister Damien O’Connor, Minister of Agriculture and Biosecurity recently regarding the important changes to the Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme and together with MPI have issued the following: “We are jointly leading an eradication effort that no other country has attempted. There is no textbook for such a programme, meaning that we are learning every step of the way and need to regularly refine our approaches. “It is unfortunate that there is currently a backlog of farmers that need to be contacted, and possibly placed under movement restrictions, especially at this time of the farming calendar. This situation is disappointing, and we understand the pressure that this puts on affected farmers. Our priority now is to get the high-risk properties contacted as soon as possible. Unfortunately, disease eradication impacts on many farms even when the likelihood of disease is extremely low. “We recognise the significant financial and emotional impact surveillance or restrictions has on the lives of many farmers but remain confident that eradication is viable and worth the effort. We agreed on a plan to strengthen, update and better resource the M bovis programme. We want to share this plan with you as changes are rolled out during the coming weeks.” A team of more than 30 staff has

been established to resource calls to farmers. 111 of the 300 high-risk farms have been contacted, and 56 Notices of Direction triggered. “We are changing the management and oversight of the M bovis response function. These changes will strengthen MPI’s work at a regional level, starting with Canterbury. It is likely that an additional senior regional operations manager will be appointed with increased ability to resolve local issues quickly.” There will also be an increased focus on working with industry partners and key groups, including Federated Farmers. “The day-to-day oversight of the programme requires significant capacity — we have all committed to stepping up to this challenge. We have commissioned an independent industry expert, alongside MPI’s chief science adviser, to deliver a report into the cause and effects of the current surge and identify additional immediate improvements. We will share the findings with you.” The Technical Advisory Group will be reconvened ahead of its planned midyear review to review the programme, particularly in light of the current surge, and reassure us that the programme

remains on track towards eradication. “We have appointed Kelvan Smith as an independent chair of the governance group to improve oversight and decision making, and will be reviewing whether any further changes to the governance are required. “Senior epidemiological staff are central to effective eradication and must be positioned to provide independent advice and input into the programme. Changes will be made to strengthen their input and their connections with MPI’s chief science adviser and the dairy and beef industry’s technical experts. “Eradicating M bovis is a complex, challenging and confronting undertaking. Collectively we have already invested heavily in the

21

programme, and many farmers have shown great patience and fortitude. We are committed to seeing this programme through and believe these changes will help us eradicate this disease from our country. Supporting you, your family and the community as we progress the eradication programme continues to be our priority. You will be receiving regular information from us. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.” DairyNZ chair Jim van der Poel, Beef + Lamb New Zealand chair Andrew Morrison, DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle, Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor and Ministry for Primary Industries directorgeneral Ray Smith.

Concentrated potency by Andy Bryenton

In an era when everybody wants to make the next cute, hip, urban-styled micro SUV, one car maker has decided to do things a little differently. Well, it’s the way they’ve been doing it since 1970, when they called their product the LJ (light jeep) 10. You’d know its lineage by another name, especially if you judge an off-roader by its ability rather than its size. It’s the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s been building a reputation and a niche which few other automakers are willing to challenge, let alone contest for dominance in. Variant names such as Escudo, Samurai and Sierra have come and gone, but still, there are few examples out there of similar machines. The Jimny still boasts a ladder chassis like a big, beefy Range Rover. It even has true four-wheel drive with locking hubs, like a Land Cruiser, and it still has the footprint of a single tennis shoe. It also looks so cute and fierce that it is elevated to the same level as a new Fiat 500 or Mini. This, the pug dog with wheels. More seriously, the Suzuki resembles like a tiny version of Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagon. It’s so little that in Japan they fit the Jimny with a 646cc inline 3 and register it as a ‘kei car’; small enough to be allowed on Tokyo streets without a special permit. Here, they’ve put a ‘massive’ 1,400cc four-banger under the hood, mated it up to an old fashioned, snappy little five-speed

Not a Hummvee far away — the Suzuki Jimny is competent and cool

manual transmission, and turned the whole thing loose with proper fourwheel drive. The challenge, here, is not whether the Jimny is cooler than almost any other micro SUV you can name. It’s whether you can have more fun, with more presence, in the real outdoors, for

this little money — sub-$26k money. For an extra $500 you can mix and match paint for a two-tone retro look. Suzuki is on a roll right now, with the Ignis crossover already gaining popularity for its off-beat and funky aesthetics. Now comes a shrunk-in-

the-wash military Jeep, which if it lives up to its ancestors, will actually do the business off-road where other micro SUVs fear to tread. It might be the coolest car on sale right now, and you can justify it for the lifestyle block too.
