Budget supports more jobs in primary sector Budget 2020 will make major investments in the primary sector to support more than 10,000 people into jobs. Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said our farmers, growers and producers would play a critical role in New Zealand’s economic recovery. “So, we’re making a $232 million investment to boost jobs and opportunities in the primary sector and rural New Zealand. It is a significant investment, which will grow and transform the primary sector. Together, as a nation, we are rebuilding from an economic shock not seen since the Great Depression. There is a clear path through, and the government is committed to getting New Zealand working again.” Mr O’Connor said there are significant employment opportunities in our primary industries and people will be trained with the skills they need for those jobs. “There are a lot of opportunities in front of us. We now need a skilled workforce to help us seize them.” An investment of $19.3 million into a range of initiatives will partner and support more than 10,000 New Zealanders in primary sector jobs. Displaced workers from other sectors such as hospitality, tourism and aviation will have opportunities to rapidly retrain. “There is also a $433 million package to fund 4,000 jobs for five years in regional environmental projects. The initiatives in this package will support the government’s objectives in its Action for Healthy Waterways. These initiatives show how environment-related actions can make a meaningful contribution to the post-Covid-19 economic recovery.” Budget 2020 will also see the government invest $5.4 million for four years to boost regional support for animal welfare around New Zealand. “That builds on our investment of $20.8m in Budget 2019.

Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor

“The combined effects of the Covid-19 response and the large-scale drought have placed significant pressure on farmers and rural communities. This pressure extends to their responsibilities around the welfare of animals in their care. “This funding will ensure more resources are available to help farmers identify and manage animal welfare issues as they recover and to ensure there is help available for future adverse events,” said Mr O’Connor. Challenges faced by rural communities have also been recognised with the government committing $20.2 million in assistance. Funding will increase access to support, advice and mental wellbeing services.

The finals of this year’s New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards will be held online this year due to Covid-19. Thirty-three finalists, selected from 11 regions will compete for the honour of winning either the 2020 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year, 2020 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year or the 2020 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year titles. General manager Robin Congdon said it has been fantastic to see the journey each finalist has taken, both professionally and personally. “Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, finalists will be asked to submit their presentations for judging digitally and speak with the judges online rather than faceto-face. “In the current environment, more than ever, it is important that success and resilience within the dairy industry are celebrated, and the sector’s contribution to the nation as an essential service is acknowledged,” said Robin. Finalists were busy preparing their presentations, information and material, which was submitted to the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards management by May 15. The three Manawatu finalists are sharemilkers Terry and Maegan Legg, farm manager Paul Mercer and dairy trainee David Reesby. Terry and Maegan are currently 50/50 sharemilking 320 cows on a 128ha Ohakune property, owned by Spall Farms Limited. Their future goals include debt repayment and equity building, with the

long-term goal of purchasing some land and becoming lease farmers. “We love the life we live and want to continue to grow great kids, great cows and great grass,” said Maegan. Twenty-seven-year old Paul is farm manager on Rober t Er vine’s 140ha, 370-cow proper ty near Palmerston North. He is currently studying extramurally for a Bachelor of AgriCommerce through Massey University. Last year, he placed second in the Manawatu Dairy Manager of the Year category. He said there are numerous benefits to entering the awards, including networking, advice on farm and career, selfassessment and the prizes. It was David’s first year entering the awards, and he found them to be a personal challenge. He is 2IC on the TRB Reesby-owned 180ha farm at Oroua Downs, milking 420 cows. David would like to progress through the industry and become a contract milker with a long-term goal of herd ownership and sharemilking, and an ultimate goal of land ownership. The national winners will be announced on a date yet to be decided.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

HONOURED IN RURAL GAMES by Denise Gunn This year’s New Zealand Rural Games sheep dog trials were renamed in honour of former All Black, farmer and rural games trust board member, the late Sam Strahan.

S

am was born in Feilding on Christmas Day, 1944. His sheep and beef farming parents, Sam Senior and Marian were the first to introduce aerial topdressing to the Apiti area. Raised on the family’s Apiti farm, Sam attended Apiti School, and then later boarded at Huntley School and Whanganui Collegiate. When Sam was around 12 years old, his father expanded the farming operation, buying 300 acres near Feilding and a further 200 acres at Kiwitea. Rugby and farming played a huge part throughout Sam’s life, starting from an early age. His rugby career kicked off playing for the local Oroua club. In 1965, his skills and talent were noticed, earning him selection for the Manawatu team against Hawke’s Bay in Hastings.

Two years later he made his debut as an All Blacks team member, playing in Wellington for the 1967 Jubilee Test, beating Australia 29–9. An All Black tour to Great Britain and France followed. Although the tour originally included Ireland, a foot and mouth outbreak put a halt to those plans and the team was denied a grand slam. In 1970, the All Black team picked to tour South Africa also saw Sam in the line-up, playing in the first three tests. In 1967, Sam married Rosemary Johnston, and the couple moved to the family’s Kiwitea farm, where they raised their three children. Throughout Sam’s rugby career he racked up 70 games for Manawatu and was the 14th All Black from the region. As a lock, alongside rugby legend

The New Zealand Rural Games sheep dog trials have been renamed The Sam Strahan Memorial Sheep Dog Challenge

Colin Meads, Sam played a total of 45 matches for the All Blacks, including 17 tests. Following retirement from playing rugby, Sam began coaching his Oroua club team and also took on some of the club’s administration. In 2002 he was made a life member of the club and the following year was voted Manawatu Rugby Union president. Sam’s son Ian said his father ultimately had to give up his All Black career to help out on the family farm. “He kept playing for Manawatu for some time, including a brief comeback to help out during the [Ranfurly] shield era — 1976–78. He played for Oroua in many grades for years.” Ian said Sam was passionate about the Oroua Club

at Kimbolton as a hub of the northern Manawatu community. “He coached and served on the club committee well into the 2000s, had a stint on the Manawatu board and as Manawatu Rugby Football Club president too.” By the early 1990s, Sam had further enlarged the Kiwitea farm to around 500 acres. He employed a manager for the 800-acre Apiti farm, and both properties then ran as sheep and beef operations, breeding and finishing stock. In 1994, the family bought Ranui Romney Stud from Kiwitea farmer Gordon Craine. When Ian came on board to work on the Kiwitea property full-time in 1999, the farm’s conversion to operate

Lineout All Blacks versus England in 1967

as a sheep and beef finishing unit was continuing. “Sam was working on this change for a while,” said Ian. “While conservative in nature, like his father, he was always looking ahead and was not afraid to change things.” Currently, the family farms three blocks; 440ha at Kiwitea, 53ha at Halcombe and a 110ha dairy farm at Opiki. “We have three full-time staff at Kiwitea, including me, and a sharemilker plus worker at the dairy farm,” he said. Sam passed away a few months before this year’s New Zealand Rural Games were held. In remembrance, the sheep dog trials section was renamed

The Sam Strahan Memorial Sheep Dog Challenge. Ian said his father always had working dogs, but his companion for the past several years was his Jack Russell Terrier, Reggie. “Most people knew Sam as an All Black, but that was only a small part of his life. He was an All Black for five years, but a farmer for life. He worked with sheep dogs and in agriculture for 60 years. While he wouldn’t tell you, I think he would be quietly pleased to know the event has been named in his honour,” said Ian. Sam’s wife, Rose, passed away in 2013. They leave behind two sons, Ian and Richard, daughter Anna and three grandchildren.

he Taranaki woman is the assistant manager at Tegel’s Taranaki parent stock breeding farm for meat chickens. “It’s a breeding facility for roosters and hens that produce fertile eggs, which are then transported to a meat chicken hatchery,” said Sandra. Sandra’s early introduction to poultry came through her great-grandmother. “My great-grandmother was a poultry farmer. As we lived with her, I was two when I started collecting eggs

and caring for the birds, with her.” In 1978, after applying to a newspaper job advertisement, Sandra began working in the poultry industry. She worked in the Lepperton hatchery for 10 years and then took time off to raise her family, returning to work on the breeding farms in 2010. During her time with Tegel, she has worked her way up through a variety of roles including egg collector, general farmhand and charge-hand. helping to run the farm on a day-today basis. “The difference between a farmhand and my current position is I have a lot more responsibility, and I am trained to the level of the manager,” said Sandra. “My current position involves being responsible for all aspects of running the farm with the support of the manager who oversees two farms.” One of Sandra’s favourite job aspects is spending time with the birds and caring for them. Every flock she helps to rear is different. Sandra said she also enjoys working with a great team of people who strive to meet targets and exceed them. “There are many challenges with farming, but each one gives us the opportunity to learn. The primary focus is always providing the best possible care for the birds, so they deliver the best results.” The Poultry Industry Trainee of the Year award is given annually to the top-performing trainee in all of the training courses run by the poultry industry, in cooperation with Primary ITO. Sandra’s course, the National Certificate in Poultry Husbandry (Level 3), is aimed at personnel currently in or progressing towards management roles. It comprises a mix of on-the-job training, written assessments and block courses. Sandra said the Primary ITO course was always interesting. “I had to sharpen my time management skills to keep on top of the coursework deadlines, along with a full-time job. There were also work-life challenges with study being done at home. It was a great experience in terms of gaining extra knowledge and being in contact with lots of knowledgeable people.” One of Sandra’s local course teachers, John McBride said he enthusiastically recommended her as a suitable candidate for Trainee of the Year. “Sandra completed a good level

Mr Brooks said the Poultry Trainee of the Year award reflects the industry’s strong commitment to training and education. “A highly-skilled and knowledgeable workforce is vital for the growth and profitability of the industry. “It is notable that the poultry sector

Teresa helps people understand how to communicate with horses through spatial awareness, problem-solving, instruction and lessons for all disciplines

America to train with a dressage trainer, and we connected through friends for work. I have ridden with and learnt from many fine horsemen and women. I had a really cushy job on a ranch with full undercover training facilities, but the owner made some bad decisions and went under after 12 years. Jools and Lynda came and supported us at that time too. “Approximately seven years ago Michaela had an accident, so we returned to Hawke’s Bay to be near her family. It has been really difficult for her, but she is doing amazingly well and is doing great with poetry and art. “I love New Zealand, all I miss is my Dodge Ram, you could tow your house with that thing. I travel to clients between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay and focus on establishing a secure partnership with horses and their owners — regardless of discipline. “I came from having the best facilities to happily working in muddy paddocks and driving an old truck until recently. I trained with a famous horseman Buck Brannaman. “He is the man that the author of The Horse Whisperer watched and

got the story idea from. I was involved in dressage and one day in the 80s decided this is it, I am going to dedicate myself to helping horses, not sing so much as horses are my passion. I am a problem solver, a behaviourist and help people who are having problems with their horses, or horses who are having problems with their people — which is often the case. It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork. There is a lot of communication between horses that is not natural to people. They have a real sense of order. It is about movement. “If a new horse goes into a new paddock, you will see one horse will make an ugly face and herd the newcomer around. That is, so the new horse knows who yields their feet to who, because if danger comes they need to know what order to run as a herd for safety. “If a horse bites and kicks, based on horse language, it is often trying to get the other horse or person to move and yield their feet, so you know to follow them or they, you. People often back up from their horse. That is sending a

4 HOLYOAKE STREET WANGANUI EAST, WANGANUI 4500

mixed message, and the horse thinks ‘OK, you will follow me’. “They are not necessarily dominating — they are establishing an order of who moves first, particularly in case of danger. Often backing a horse is enough to get a change in behaviour as they then know whose space is whose. “Once people learn how to communicate to horses through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. When people learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. “Happy horse, happy rider.” Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help. Challenges of getting up and running again

11

by Ian McKelvie Rangitikei MP

In November 2011, I was elected by the people of the Rangitikei to represent them and the National Party in the New Zealand Parliament — by quite a wide margin. It is a huge privilege to be elected as a Member of Parliament, and since then I have carried out this role to the best of my ability. During the past nine years, we have faced many challenges as a nation, earthquakes, floods, droughts, the remnants of the global financial crisis. The reality is, all of this is part of life, I suppose. We have never faced a challenge like the one in front of us right now though, and before I go on, I believe we owe a debt of gratitude to Bill English. Without his superb fiscal management and austerity as Minister of Finance in the previous National government, the challenge we now face would be much greater. Of course, National has a proud history of being responsible managers of the economy, including our ability to repay debt. Right now, my ability to represent the people of the Rangitikei in Wellington, in fact, to represent you at all, is being seriously compromised by the restrictions the government has chosen to put on our democratic system. I accept they were initially necessary, and we seem to have achieved very good health outcomes as a result. However, humans are social beings, and I don’t believe this idea of social distancing is in any way sustainable, and I think the problems caused by it will far

outweigh the benefits. I particularly refer to the old and the young here. Imagine kids at preschool being kept a metre apart — never. Imagine half a class turning up to school one day and half the next — oh to be a teacher! Then we have my mother and thousands of her compatriots as residents of the wonderful rest homes around New Zealand, many of whom were born in the great depression and lived through the war. They knew hardship, and they have now been eight weeks without any family contact other than by phone — tough, but how long can that last? I believe politics is all about social contact. It’s about being able to meet people face-to-face to sort out problems, to glean information, to discuss and formulate policy and most importantly, to feel the body language and the mood of a room. I don’t know about you, but I do not trust what I see and read on Facebook, Twitter or even much of what we read in the media. After all, most of what we read is an opinion piece — much as this is. So, we need to be clamouring for the restoration of democracy. With a general election still set down for September 19, social contact and the

Ian McKelvie Rangitikei MP

ability to meet and connect with people is even more important. Without it, how can a new candidate from any political party be given a fair and reasonable chance to engage with potential voters? How can voters who want to learn more about the contenders challenging to represent them attend a public meeting or open their door for a chat. I am very much looking forward to finding out what the government has in mind for life, work, business and

Q UA L I T Y U S E D S TO C K

play in New Zealand under level two. I have also been pleased to get back to parliament, albeit briefly, so we may be allowed to resume our constitutional duty of being an opposition to the current coalition government. In the meantime, the ‘buy locally’ message has never been more relevant as we all play our part in getting things moving again. Spending locally spreads benefits widely within the community and creates and sustains local employment.

“Our main contract is weed spraying for councils with maintenance work such as roadside vegetation, water tables, parks, riversides, around edge marker posts and the like. We also do urban projects such as the Manawatu District townships,” says Jon. “We are contracted to the military bases, rivers, parks and reserves. Schools have us spray the fields, and hospitals utilise us to get rid of the weeds around the grounds. In the rural sector, we spray crops and paddocks to help eliminate pest plants like gorse, blackberry and noxious type weeds

including thistles and ragwort. For farmers, we tend to run-offs, yards and races, cowsheds and fence lines where need be and we spray crops. The same goes for lifestyle block owners to help stabilise their lawns and paddocks. “For livestock, some weeds and pest plants are poisonous, and we can help identify weeds such as ragwort, which is called candy for cows and dangerous due to its high sugar content. Spraying also creates space for extra pasture or crop growth. We leave a small footprint and can work on all terrain from steep hills to flat areas as

we use boom sprayers, quads, utes, and gun and hose equipment. Getting the professionals in saves time and it is work that most people don’t enjoy. We have all the health and safety equipment and are Growsafe certified and Registered Chemical Applicators. “Our team is professional with many years’ experience — some have been in the game for nearly 30 years. “We appreciate our existing customers and look forward to meeting new clients. No job is too big or too small — eliminating weeds, and unwanted pest plants is what we do.”

Duck hunting confirmed

Game bird hunters throughout the country have patiently waited for the announcement of the 2020 game bird season opening day.

Alert level two allows for a positive duck hunting season

This year the season start date being marked on May 23 means the national tradition for hunters to come together and harvest game birds for the family dinner table is still possible. In consultation with Fish & Game New Zealand and the government, the season start date was selected so that hunters had time to equip themselves, prepare their maimais and travel to their hunting grounds. The alert level two conditions for game bird hunting are more practical for the hunters and has proven the benefits of waiting versus opting for the restrictions of alert level three. Hunters can travel inter-regionally and will be able to stay overnight at their hunting spots with friends and family

under level two. While this offers the freedom duck hunters had hoped for, there are still considerations that need to be adhered to as outlined in the government’s level two guidelines for the safety of all involved. Hunters are able to travel, use their boats, and access public land under alert level two. That will mean communities that have relied on the game bird season for income and food supply will still have a season. Outdoor retailers will also be pleased that hunters can now buy instore and be fully prepared for the season. Fish & Game staff have used the lockdown period to have all the necessary regulation changes made for the new

Look after local trades by Paul Campbell

During the Covid-19 alert level two, it might be a good time to contribute to the country’s economic recovery from the battering of lockdown by spending a little on repairs or maintenance around your home or business at a time when tradespeople can visit your home for the necessary work to be carried out. Be aware tradespeople do not need to wear personal protective equipment (such as face masks), but they must keep a one-metre distance from those in the home. So, if the idea gets your green light, there are a few things to look out for. Always hire registered or licensed tradespeople. The sector is one of professionals, and they will make life easy in making sure estimates and quotes are well researched given that your working brief is clear. By all means, shop around and get written estimates or quotes from different companies and choose tradespeople that are recommended by others — ask friends and family, or check online reviews. If they have the experience doing the type of work you need it helps to find a good fit — you need someone who understands your vision and family situation, and who you can talk to easily. Good communication is the best way to avoid problems down the track. Check your tradesperson is licensed for the work you’re hiring them to do, because if not, you might not be insured for damage caused by poor workmanship or even you may not be able to get the

Industry jobs plentiful DairyNZ wants people who have lost jobs due to Covid-19 to know there is plenty of work on dairy farms, especially in Waikato, Canterbury, Otago and Southland and that they might well earn more than in their previous role. With the national unemployment rate forecast to rise sharply due to Covid-19, DairyNZ is encouraging people to consider work on dairy farms in a new Go Dairy campaign that also includes entry-level training to help their transition to farming. “Immediately, there are 1,000 jobs up for grabs on dairy farms,” says DairyNZ’s chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. “As the new season gets underway on June 1, even more positions are likely to become available. For people who are looking for work and like the idea of caring for animals and the environment, there are lots of jobs and career progression opportunities.” While the Go Dairy career changers campaign, which is supported by Federated Farmers, aims to create awareness of the job opportunities, there is a big emphasis on ensuring new staff understand what is involved in farm life. “We want a win-win situation — for new dairy farming employees to be happy and fulfilled in their new lifestyle and jobs, and for farm employers to have great talent working for them,” Dr Mackle says. “Dairy also pays one of the highest average wages of all the

primary sectors. For the most part, we are anticipating interested people will be from the regions where there are big job losses in tourism and hospitality — and where there is dairying close by. “An example is the dairy heartland of Waikato, which is also home to the Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves attractions, and the neighbouring Rotorua area, where there have been job losses, both direct and in the local support businesses.” Other dairy farming regions where there have been significant job losses include the South Island, in particular in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. “While new entrants to dairy farming would start off in the more junior roles, they can anticipate a rewarding career pathway. Even though they are new to farming, many people already have skills that are readily transferrable and valued on dairy farms. “That is because dairy farming these days is quite diverse and there are many roles, from doing the farm books, to working with machinery, working with animals, and managing staff, and making full use of technology along the way. Skills from previous work, and a determination to give their best, will see people new to farming quickly progress from a farm assistant position to herd

Dr Tim Mackle, DairyNZ’s chief executive

manager and then other management roles, and even ownership later on.” Dairy is projected to earn the country $19.2 billion in export revenues in the financial year ending on June 30. “Kiwi farmers are also regarded as the best in the world for pasture-based farming, as well as their care for animals and their land.” For information visit godairy.co.nz/ career-changers or dial 0800 4 DAIRYNZ 0800 4 324 7969.

Evolution of an old favourite

Oi!

by Andy Bryenton

With a bit of classical history still echoing in my head from college days, I’d always thought it odd of Mitsubishi to call their big, burly 4x4 ute the Triton. Being a history nerd, I recalled (and didn’t Google, promise) that Triton was the son of the Greek sea god, a fearsome protector of the oceans armed with a triple-pointed trident spear and more muscles than the All Black’s front line put together. Great name for a powerboat, or a submarine, perhaps, but a ute? Are they suggesting that it will be good for towing a boat? That seems a little unimaginative, considering all the other jobs the original Triton could do. It’s all coming clear, as the 2020 model arrives with a burlier shape, a more aggressive, modern look and a handy amount of power and torque thanks to an efficient 2.5 litre inter-cooled turbo diesel engine. Triton himself went through a lot of changes over time, becoming a Greek god, a Libyan lake spirit who helped the Argonauts, then a Roman demigod, then, eventually, Aquaman. That’s right; the latest version of the prince of the oceans, and hence the Triton myth, is Jason Momoa. Hence Triton is a good name for a machine that’s gone through a lot of changes during the years to finally emerge in a modern form that packs a punch. For the Mitsubishi ute, that punch comes from the aforementioned motor, enabling a 3,500kg braked towing capacity and putting down 183 horsepower and 437 newton-metres of torque at a leisurely 2,500 rpms. That’s ample grunt, but the punch still hasn’t

landed. It comes when you look at the top-flight 4wd VRX double cab diesel model and add up everything you get for under $50,000. Leather heated seats, automatic safety features such as autonomous braking to avoid collisions, auto rain-sensing wipers, auto dipping mirror to banish high-beam dazzle from cars behind, a thumping audio system, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth audio streaming and a whole lot more are all included.

There’s even a stealth black special edition for $10,000 less, which looks fantastic. So, the four-wheeled equivalent of the ruler of Atlantis has, if you’ll pardon the pun, hidden depths and a lot of loot for a low investment price. There’s a hefty warranty up for grabs, too, which will put buyers’ minds at ease. What’s even better; it really is still perfect for towing the boat as well.

The famous DeLorean gullwing coupe, star of the Back to the Future film series, was envisioned as the brainchild of John DeLorean, creator of such legendary US muscle cars as the Pontiac GTO and Firebird. Originally planned to be built in Northern Ireland out of stainless steel, and to house a rotary engine similar to the now-iconic Mazda RX7s, the project was a defining example of 80s excess and trends. DeLorean was no fool, and so he called in the expertise of one of the 20th century’s great automotive minds, Colin Chapman of Lotus. Chapman would be associated with the DeLorean project from 1978 onward. His peerless expertise from the world of motor racing would be called on to create a chassis and suspension system, among other engineering features, which would make the stainless steel sports car outperform its rivals. Funding a whole new supercar is a difficult game. The wheels came off in 1982 when, at the height of Ronald Reagan’s drug war, undercover FBI informant James Hoffman approached

John DeLorean with a shady proposition. Finance a plan to smuggle and sell 100 kilograms of cocaine, and get the project out of debt. DeLorean agreed and was promptly arrested, but he fought the entrapment in court and won. Sadly, it soon became apparent why the businessman was willing to take such a risk. Campaign for lamb sales

19

A new campaign to boost online sales of New Zealand lamb in China is being launched in a joint initiative by Beef + Lamb New Zealand and leading food company Alliance Group. The digital campaign will leverage changes in consumer behaviour in China toward purchasing red meat online and seeking healthier food options in the wake of Covid-19. “Alliance Group and B+LNZ are coinvesting in this initiative to drive the awareness of New Zealand’s healthy and natural grass-fed lamb, but ultimately to drive sales,” says Market Development general manager at B+LNZ, Nick Beeby. “Our research shows there is a significant opportunity in China for New Zealand lamb to take centre stage. Consumers are seeking out nutritious food to boost their immunity, and we expect this to continue as people focus on their health in these uncertain times. “We are also seeing significant growth in online transactions and sales, especially in meat products, partly driven by people being incentivised to buy online during the Covid-19 crisis. We expect this trend to continue as people have experienced the convenience and efficiency of food being delivered right to their door.” The campaign on China’s two biggest e-commerce platforms, TMall.com and JD.com, will feature Alliance Group’s Pure South lamb in conjunction with

the red meat sector’s Taste Pure Nature country of origin brand. “We will be leveraging Alliance’s established brand and e-commerce channels within these platforms that provide ready-made audiences of millions of consumers. The campaign will target specific events run by both platforms with display ads, search engine optimisation and search engine marketing to grab the attention of consumers searching for grassfed meat. “This is a great opportunity to test and prove the impact of the growth in e-commerce transactions and sales in China, but also a chance to establish the Taste Pure Nature brand and the New Zealand red meat story by driving consumers to available New Zealand product.” Shane Kingston, general manager sales at Alliance Group, says the cooperative has been operating in China for more than 20 years so has strong channels to market. “New Zealand is a trusted source of protein in China with consumers focussed on health and nutrition in the wake of Covid-19m so we expect further growth in this segment in the

future. New Zealand is well-placed to capitalise on the sentiment of Chinese consumers who are seeking to purchase more ‘fresh’ and ‘good for you’ protein.” “This initiative builds on our existing partnership with the New Zealand Food Basket and e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has provided the co-operative with a single doorway that directly connects affluent Chinese consumers on the

Tmall Fresh e-commerce platform with Alliance Group’s Pure South lamb.” B+LNZ is also working with other meat processing and exporting companies on other Taste Pure Nature initiatives for the Chinese market. The strategy is focussed on developing the overarching brand and then working with companies on specific marketing campaigns.

Protection goes two ways

21

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

by Paul Campbell

Kiwi tradesmen, as well as their customers, are protected under the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) in the rare case a disagreement may ensue, but this process may be limited during current alert levels. Talk to the relevant business in the first instance because with Covid-19 as a major unexpected event — usual services may not be possible. Businesses need to meet their obligations under the CGA, but it may be reasonable for a repair, replacement or refund to take longer to process under current conditions. If you pay a business to provide a service and it’s sub-standard, you can ask them to fix the problem under the act, but in turn, they might not be liable if the reason they couldn’t finish was something out of their control. The act covers services usually bought for personal or household use. There are, in fact, four guarantees that apply, including: 1. Services will be provided with reasonable care and skill, and any work done must be at least as good as the work of a competent person with average skills and experience for that type of work. 2. Services will be fit for purpose. When you have told the service provider what work you want them to do, and they accept the job, they must make sure you get what you

want. However, if you are not clear about what you want, the service provider might not be responsible if you don’t get it. 3. Services will be done within a reasonable time if no timeframe is agreed. If you and the service provider have not agreed on a time to finish a job, the provider must do so within a reasonable time.

4. Services will be a reasonable price if no price is agreed. You can work out what a reasonable price is by checking with other providers in your area. These guarantees apply automatically — whether or not you sign a contract.

Return of the Outlander by our Motoring Correspondent

If you think hard about the best quality items out there, and those that have stood the test of time in your garage and home, you’ll agree that it’s attention to detail, which makes a big difference. Ettore Bugatti, the father of the ultra-luxury brand that still carries his name (at great speed), once said that nobody remembers second best, but nobody forgets perfection. Another automaker quipped that ‘the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten’, and he must have known a thing or two because he was one half of Rolls Royce. Both men had a good point, and it holds true for everything from ironing boards to trousers to motor vehicles. Something well made, where attention has been paid to the details that matter, will impress more than something flimsy but inexpensive. To put it another way, you might save once by snapping up a bargain-basement design. However, you’re paying your future self back with interest if you go for quality. This long preamble is all to do with the fact that Can-Am’s new Outlander quads have been built not to a budget, to annoy the competition, but to a standard that aims to embarrass it. The Outlander 570 DPS is the star of the line-up for features, but everywhere you’ll find little touches of added toughness, ease of maintenance and durability, which are the hallmark of engineers finalising the design, not bean counters. The big 570 packs an eight-

Can-Am has elected to build up to a standard with their new Outlander range, and the attention to detail shines through

valve v-twin churning out a dependable 48 horsepower, enabling a 590kg towing capacity and lots of torque, the tractive force that keeps off-road machines moving when the going gets muddy. There’s another example of building up to a standard; the auto-locking front diff on the new Outlander is primed to kick in earlier, and it doesn’t need a speed limiter, as you might find on other ATVs. Between this innovation, dynamic power steering and sure-footed fourwheel-drive on tap, the Outlander feels reassuringly stable as a platform for farming chores of all kinds. with packs, racks and tray options, and the underpinnings will still have that ‘bank vault door’ kind of build that ensures long life despite hard knocks. The best part is, when Rolls and Bugatti were talking up their well-made machines, they were asking punters to part with a big chunk of cash. While Can-Am has followed the advice of those auto pioneers, they have also taken a leaf from the book of Mr Henry Ford. By making a whole lot of quads for the global market, they’ve kept the price low while keeping their standards high. That’s a winning combo.
