Critical worker shortage takes a toll The government’s inability to bring 500 desperately needed skilled dairy employees into the country has disappointed Federated Farmers. Pressure on some farming families, due to shortage of available workers for farms, is taking a toll on their stress levels, wellbeing and health. “Farmers have been telling us for well over a year there is a real shortage of suitable dairy staff,” said Federated Farmers employment and immigration spokesperson Chris Lewis. “I am getting daily calls about the labour situation, and many farmers don’t know what to do for the coming season. “I’m a farmer, not a social worker, and I don’t know what to tell these people. As every dairy farmer knows, the cows will always get milked, the question is, at what cost?” Federated Farmers ManawatuRangitikei president Murray Holdaway said the issue is affecting this region. “Unlike the pictures we have all seen of apples rotting on the ground, in the case of dairy and sheep and beef farms, you cannot leave the cows unmilked or the sheep undrenched. So farmers will prioritise those jobs and leave less immediate jobs for later. “So the effects of the labour shortage will not be seen as clearly in the short term. Farmers will also respond by working a little harder and longer to mitigate the effects, but in the longterm, this will add further stress.” Mr Holdaway said there are two responses the government could make to help. “One is to allow some migrant dairy workers in. The other is to show some genuine appreciation of the contribution farmers are making to New Zealand’s economic and social position. Both these moves would give farmers more confidence that our sector has a future.”
Federated Farmers Manawatu-Rangitikei president Murray Holdaway
A DairyNZ and Federated Farmers survey undertaken in March showed 49% of respondents were short-staffed and needed to employ more people. Of these, almost half have been trying to fill a vacancy for more than three months, and 24% had the vacancy open for more than six months. “We tried to highlight the extent of the problem to the government in our border exception application,” said Mr Lewis. “Now, to have the application turned down in its entirety is really disheartening for our farmers. We hoped that MPI and Immigration would have seen the impact that a shortage of people has had during harvest for our horticulture colleagues and try to avoid the same problems through the peak dairy calving period.” Despite the disappointment over the dairy workers, Federated Farmers is pleased to see some shearers and agricultural contractors have been approved to enter the country for their peak demand period.

New grant for biodiversity
MANAWATU FaRMING LIFESTyLES
Horizons Regional Council has opened applications for an inaugural Kanorau Koiora Taketake — Indigenous Biodiversity Community grant. The grant seeks applications from community groups aiming to restore or enhance biodiversity in the ManawatuWhanganui region. Councillor Fiona Gordon is one of the three people on the decisionmaking panel. She said this grant would be a huge help for community groups with projects that support connections between nature and people. “Council’s vision for this grant is to empower communities to reconnect with and improve biodiversity. Projects need to be community-led, which could be landowners, individuals, Maori land trusts, not-for-profit organisations, umbrella groups, whanau/hapu/iwi. “We’re looking for applications that also support the regeneration and continuation of matauranga Maori (Maori knowledge) and will favourably consider those that provide opportunities for our communities to learn about their local environment and get involved,” said Cr Gordon. “The total amount of funding is to be confirmed through the current Long Term Plan process by the end of June.” In addition to Cr Gordon, the panel also includes Councillors John Turkington and Nicola Patrick.
Applications will be shortlisted by the panel and assessed on the following criteria: • Place: Recognises high-value areas of biodiversity and the strong connections tangata whenua have with their whenua (land), awa (rivers) and moana (coast) • Biodiversity Outcomes: represents a clear need for the project and how the project will directly enhance or protect biodiversity within the Manawatu — Whanganui Region • Community Outcomes: participation and awareness, including ongoing accessibility of the site to the community, the educational value and the people involved • Collaboration and Partnerships: considers applicant contribution to the project and opportunities for collaboration and partnership with others have been considered Applications will be accepted from landowners, individuals, Maori land trusts, not-for-profit organisations, umbrella groups or whanau/hapu/ iwi for any community-led project. Hooked on Highlands
by Denise Gunn
When Highland cattle breeders, Pete Holloway and Lisa Berthold, first viewed the breed, they were hooked.
T
hat was more than 18 years ago, around the same time they bought a block of land in the Otaki Forks area. Soon after moving on to their property, foundation stock for their Highland cattle fold arrived. Discussion about a suitable name for their registered fold followed, and it was Lisa’s father who came up with the title. “At that time, we had a long coat German Shepherd and a long coat cat. So my dad commented, tonguein-cheek, we should call the property
Woolly Manor because of all the hairy animals,” said Lisa. Pete and Lisa have found Highlands to be a very hardy breed with few health issues. “They are smaller than most beef breeds, so they are kinder on the ground, and at the end of the day, they look great.” The couple is mindful that the breed is a horned animal and their breeding programme takes this into account. A good temperament is top of the

“So along with running our own bull, we are also looking to bring in an AI programme with overseas genetics.” In 2015, they took up a lease of 50 acres next door to their property, deciding to turn their small Highland fold

into more than just a hobby. “We bought some fantastic genetics from a breeder in Feilding who bred commercially but was selling up. So we got the last of their lines.” Eighteen months later, Peter and Lisa had close to 35 head of cattle. Last year, in the first week of lockdown, Lisa’s mother was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia. Lisa left the farm to take care of her for seven months. “Pete had to run the farm and keep up his day job as he was classed as an essential worker. It was six months before I even came back home for a weekend.“ During this time, the couple decided they needed to downsize cattle numbers to a more manageable number. “Mum went into remission in late October, so it was great to get back home on a full-time basis.” When the lease on the block next door came to an end, Pete and Lisa decided to downsize again. “We’ve come full circle, and to be honest, we are loving the time spent
each day with a small herd again. Currently, we are down to nine breeding girls plus calves.” As their bull runs with the cows 12 months of the year, calving is year-round. “Our previous bull was 13 when he passed, so we have a young three-yearold at the moment which is proving himself both with his cows and in the ring.” Due to the breed’s slow growth maturity, the couple’s heifers aren’t mated until they reach between two to three years of age. Weaning takes place around eight to 10 months. Pete and Lisa show their team of Highlands around the lower North Island, enjoying the people, the atmosphere and the chance to parade their animals to the public. “Highlands are huge crowd-pleasers and a big drawcard for the shows. Really, the wins are just a bonus.” At last year’s Stratford A&P Show, which also held the Royal title, the couple came away from five medals, along with the Supreme Highland award
Woolly Manor Moos breed quality, docile Highland cattle
and Supreme Lifestyle Champion award. In 2017, their previous bull won the World Champion Senior Bull from more than 350 entries around the world. “We were pretty ecstatic over that.” Four of their current herd have won supreme champion titles, including one older cow and her progeny. Lisa is also the New Zealand Lifestyle Highland Society president and the current beef chairman for the Wairarapa A&P Association. Woolly Manor Moos holds a BBQ on the Friday and Saturday nights of the show for all the beef

Shearing competition opens up opportunities by Denise Gunn
After a team of Palmerston North Boys’ High School (PNBHS) shearers competed in the inaugural Secondary Schools Shearing Championships, the school’s careers department is looking at opportunities to assist students to develop their skills further.
T
he competition, focussing on rookies, was a new event at the recent Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games. It was also the first time a shearing competition for secondary schools had been held in New Zealand. PNBHS deputy rector Gerard Atkin said the Clash of the Colleges contest, added to the New Zealand Rural Games last year, grew in 2021 with 48 students in 12 teams competing. “Along with the growth in the Clash of the Colleges competition, the secondary schools shearing competition was added for 2021.” “It was the first time we have entered a team into a shearing competition,” he said.
Team members, which included four shearers and one wool handler, were selected after the opportunity to form a team was advertised. The Secondary Schools Shearing Championships was the first taste of competition for 14-year-old Jock Chambers. Jock lives on a lifestyle block in Takapau but previously lived on a sheep and beef farm between Wairoa and Napier. His parents introduced him to shearing towards the end of last year. Although Jock didn’t have any specific preparation for the competition, he worked for his parents during the summer holidays. Fourteen-year-old Orlando Ratima lives on a 100-acre sheep and beef

farm near Hunterville. As his father Shane operates Ratima Shearing, Orlando was in good hands learning to shear. The year 11 student has also completed three wool handling courses, worked in the sheds with the Ratima Shearing gang and taken on some wool pressing duties. Orlando picked up some previous shearing competition experience at the Rangitikei Shearing Sports held in Marton earlier this year. Extra tuition from his father in the leadup to the Secondary Schools Shearing Championships came in handy, as well as completing a shearing course run through Ratima Shearing. Orlando’s aim during the competition was to use a good shearing technique. Orlando’s sister, Brenna, was the team’s wool handler. Brenna is a year nine student at Feilding High School. She works as a wool handler for Ratima Shearing during the school holidays. Year 12 student Aaron Christensen lives on a farm just south of Shannon. Aaron has worked on a variety of farms since he was a youngster, learning to shear for the past couple of years. Experience gained shearing during school holidays in the Manawatu and Wairarapa paid off this year when Aaron won the Horowhenua A&P Show shearing competition’s novice section in January. The oldest member of the team was year 13 student Zane Munn, also from Hunterville. Zane picked up

his shearing experience while working part-time for Ratima Shearing. Mr Atkin said the students all enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the rural games. “The school’s careers department is now looking at opportunities to assist these boys, and other interested students, to develop their shearing skills, hopefully, to enable them to enter further competitions in the future.” PNBHS has seen strong growth in agriculture based subjects in recent years.
“Agriculture has been introduced alongside horticulture as a subject from year 9 to year 13. AgriBusiness is a new senior subject, and we have seen significant growth in the Gateway programme, offered by Primary ITO, with 29 boys completing practical farming experience and related assessments,” said Mr Atkin.

feed the calves. I’ve always found my way down the farm doing something to help out. In the morning, before school for the last couple of years, I would feed the calves to help and get the second herd in. Even though sometimes I ran late for school, it was worth it in the end.” said Holly. Together with her two sisters, Jessica, 18, and Hannah, 15, Holly began showing dairy cattle at school lamb and calf days. “We started to get more into the showing side when I was about 10 years old. My pet day calf from that year did really well and thought we would try other shows.” Holly said when selecting dairy cattle for the show ring; the family looks for
depth and spring of rib, rump angle, feet and legs, and dairyness throughout. With months of training and selective feeding put into preparing dairy cattle for the show ring, Holly has been fortunate to have people help out. “I was very lucky that I had helpers do this because we were feeding twice a day.” With a large team of show cows needing to be filled up with hay twice a day, Holly said it takes a team to feed them all. “In the week coming up to a show, we start to clip the cattle to set off their features better. It’s great having a lot of people clipping at once on a calf because we can do the animals faster and help each other out too.”

Holly won the dairy judging and placed third in the handler’s class. When showing dairy cattle, show classes often happen in quick succession. Holly has found the biggest challenge is trying to be in five places at the same time. “It helps having a great team helping out — that makes it easier.” Holly is currently working on a 700-cow dairy farm, just around the corner from the Powell’s farm. Eventually, she would like to take over the family farm, running her own pedigree Holstein, Jersey and Ayrshire studs.

Red meat exports top $1 billion
Scotts
The latest analysis from the Meat Industry Association shows New Zealand’s exported red meat and co-products worth more than $1 billion during March of this year. It is the second time monthly red meat exports have topped the billiondollar mark. Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said the first time New Zealand’s monthly exports hit the billion-dollar mark was in March 2020 at the start of the global pandemic. “The March 2021 month’s $1.04 billion export earnings confirm the strong global demand for safe, quality red meat. It also suggests that some of the initial Covid-19-related disruptions are starting to resolve as countries get on top of the virus.” China took 45 per cent of New Zealand’s total red meat exports in March, to the value of $464 million. That was an increase of 35 per cent from the same period in 2020. New Zealand sheep meat exports to China also increased to a record monthly volume of 36,434 tonnes. In March, China imported an overall total of 294,410 tonnes of red meat from all countries, with sheep meat imports increasing by 106 per cent — beef imports remained steady. New Zealand’s share of sheep meat and beef imports was close to 19 per cent. “Despite supply chain issues, China is largely back to normal with strong consumption and demand, and this is great news for our sector,” said Ms Karapeeva.
“Chinese consumers are seeking attributes such as high food safety standards, wellness and nutrition from the food they buy. New Zealand’s excellent reputation means we are in a strong position to respond to this demand.” The ongoing impact of Asian swine fever in Chinese pig herds has driven China’s strong demand. The country’s domestic pork supply reduced by at least 20 million tonnes in 2020. For the past 12 months, exports to China have remained the same at $3.6 billion while exports to the United States, the second-largest market, increased by eight per cent to $1.8 billion. The next two largest markets, the UK and Japan, have seen exports decrease to $406 million and $374 million, respectively. Disruptions in March last year, due to Covid-19, saw exports normally destined for China diverted to other international markets. However, while exports to most other markets were down year-on-year, this was primarily attributable to current Chinese demand and a return to more

INSULMAX WALL INSULATION SYSTEM
Wall Insulation Without Renovation
For Home Owners DO YOU WANT THE WARM WALL FEEL OF A NEW HOME?
Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

All property maintenance needs covered CBD Home Solutions has earned a trusted reputation, delivering high standards of workmanship across the wider Manawatu region. With a full range of home services available, the friendly, skilled, knowledgeable team at CBD Home Solutions is just a phone call away to help out. Clive Dorn founded the business as CBD Painters many years ago. The business soon branched out into other aspects of property maintenance to form CBD Home Solutions. Clive’s son, Brendon, joined him 10 years ago to learn the ropes. As Clive is slowly taking up retirement, Brendon has stepped in to become the owner of CBD Home Solutions. “There are eight of us, from painters, builders, handymen to landscapers,” said Brendon. The team is on hand to take on any task around the home from odd jobs and repairs, property maintenance, decorating, electrical, insulation, gardening, landscaping and building services. Commercial, as well as residential painting services, are also available along with any required plastering work before painting begins. “If you have a problem, then we will find a solution. When you are in the
trade, you know the right people to get it done,” said Brendon. “As we have skills and capabilities in-house to handle everything, you will not need to source, hire and then wait for multiple contractors. Instead, we’ll come in, get the job done for a fair and affordable price.” The team can complete one-off jobs, as well as cover regular property maintenance needs, with customised solutions to meet requirements. “We will give you a free, noobligation quote.” Brendon said CBD Solutions services areas from Levin to Bulls, Apiti to Pohangina, and everywhere in between, or within 45 minutes drive from Palmerston North. “Further if accommodation is available,” he said. “When you come to us, you’ll get reliability, a high standard of workmanship, friendly team and realistic prices. “We pride ourselves on good communication and a job well done.” For further information, or to obtain a free quote, visit cbdhomesolutions.

Helping osteoarthritis: Chondroitin sulphate by John Arts, Abundant Health
A significant research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further.
The trusted Sparex team in Feilding has more than 100 years of combined experience in the agricultural sector
The trusted team at the Sparex branch in Feilding has clocked up more than 100 years of combined experience in the agricultural sector, supplying the correct tools required to help farmers get the job done. Area sales manager Mark Broughton travels as far as Gisborne and Taranaki to ensure dealerships have products readily available for their clients. Prior to taking on his management position, Mark spent 20 years working in the dairy industry. Ross Fairless and Mitch Oldfield take care of customer services, covering most of the central and southern North Island. Ross has worked in the industry for 40 years, and Mitch is not far behind with 35 years. The pair’s knowledge and experience prove invaluable when sourcing and supplying agricultural parts for their clients. In the warehouse, Andrew Pinfold ensures the shelves are well-stocked and takes care of the inventory. Andrew is also committed to the community through his work as a volunteer firefighter with the Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade. The newest member of the team, Wendy Poole, helps out in the warehouse and takes care of customer services.
Sparex has more than 20,000 products available globally, including replacement parts for all major tractor brands, accessories and machinery parts. Spray equipment, hand tools, power tools, generators, compressors, jacks, fastening, oil, grease guns and lubrication systems, CRC range, safety, welding, and specialised engineering tools are also in stock. “We have so much product on the shelf readily available. Sparex NZ is a major tool supplier with all of the top brands,” said Mark. “We hold products in branch for all major and minor trades and everyday tools for home or shed.” All parts sold through Sparex are guaranteed, with a 12-month warranty. Next-day delivery services are available with flexible shipping and delivery solutions. “We offer high-quality tools at everyday prices and would like to invite the Manawatu community to come in and meet the team. You won’t leave disappointed.” The Sparex branch in Feilding is located at 20 Fergusson Street, opposite the former New World supermarket building. Phone 06 323 7329 for all enquiries. Sparex is a trade-only supplier.
I have no doubt that the correct dose of high-grade CS is the most important natural compound to help joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months, the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance
of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is, how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. This comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: May
Forestry Awards a sell-out night in Palmerston North. The best of best in the region’s forestry industry were toasted at a sell-out Southern North Island Wood Council Training Awards dinner last Friday night, where 420 attendees from our forestry sector attended the Awapui Racecourse in Palmerston North. The supreme winner, found from the winners of the 12 awards’ categories, was Troy Mason of KTM Silviculture, who earlier in the evening had been crowned as the training company of the year. The big award recognises an individual or company who are leaders in their field. KTM is owned by Troy and Kelly Mason and judges were impressed with the ethos behind this relatively young company who has a strong ongoing commitment to continuing to upskill its workers and go beyond what is required to ensure the very best when it comes to health, safety and the environment. Troy is known for his exemplary attitude towards training that ensures his crew not only do a good job, but a good job safely done. The company draws on its Māori roots and has a strong connection to the whenua, and especially local iwi and hapū. For them, it gives more meaning in their training programmes for rangatahi, and especially taking care of the whenua and environment, while being kaitiaki of it makes them go that little bit further every time. Also honoured last night was Morris Fisher for his outstanding lifetime of commitment to the forestry industry. Judges considered the huge amount of support Morris has given to small scale forestry as well as the development of young people across a wide variety of areas.
In a career spanning more than five decades he has planted over 4000 hectares – or four million trees – then managed the silviculture tending through to maturity. He has been involved in setting up areas of native bush for the Queen Elizabeth Trust and planted native riparian and wetland areas, taking an interest in how they are protecting streams and rivers. During a stellar career he has worked as a log scaler, instructor and manager before establishing his own business TAML Forestry that specialises in silviculture, management and consultancy.
awards dinner, which was held at the Awapuni Function Centre in Palmerston North. The awards cover the sector from Taranaki to Whanganui, Manawatu to Wairapapa, Tararua and Wellington. Forestry is a significant contributor to
the region’s coffers, directly employing more than 1000 people across a wide range of jobs who generate around $187m of log sales revenue, underpinning a further 2200 jobs in wood processing.
Morris has been a long-running supporter of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry and New Zealand Farm Forestry Association and in recent years been quietly promoting forestry to local schools to encourage young people to consider a career in forestry. A special award was also presented to Kylie Boyd from Centre Port for the work she has done in establishing a log rail collaboration project in Masterton.

Awards were presented across the industry – from apprentices to wood processing excellence, trainees to contractors and more. “These are a chance for us to both recognise and celebrate excellence amongst the skilled forestry workforce in our region,” says SNI Wood Council chief executive Erica Kinder. It is the fourth year the awards have been held with new categories introduced for emerging talent and wood processing. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s fiancé Clarke Gayford, who is also a television fishing show host, was the MC for the
