The winners were announced at the New Zealand River Awards ceremony, organised by the New Zealand Rivers Trust and the Morgan Foundation. The Makuri River at Tuscan Hills was awarded the Most Improved River Award. The awards, which began in 2013, are designed to encourage regional councils and communities to work together with the goal of improving the health of rivers in their regions. Water quality is recorded at over 600 regional council monitoring sites on many waterways throughout New Zealand. A panel of scientists use this longterm data, held on the Land, Air, Water, Aotearoa (LAWA) website, Horizons Regional Council chairman Bruce Gordon to evaluate the entrants. The top with a Morgan Foundation River Award three waterways receive national awards and the most improved river in are an indication of a healthier river and improving water quality. “Horizons each region is also recognised. New councillors take their seats A new mayor and four new councillors are the post-election faces on the Manawatu District Council. Joining new mayor Helen Worboys at the council table are Hilary Humphrey, Michael Ford, Stuart Campbell and Phil Marsh. Retaining their seats on the council were Barbara Cameron, Shane Casey, Howard Voss, Andrew Quarrie, Steve Bielski and Alison Short. Helen Worboys was previously manager of Feilding Promotion, and farms at Mt Biggs with her husband Neil. Ms Humphrey, who works at Eden kindergarten, commented that she herself “will really have to start working hard now to repay the confidence that the community has put in me. People can expect someone that is going to work extremely hard and do her best to deliver what she promised.” Feilding accountant Stuart Campbell says he will use his expertise to address rising debt levels. “I will work to ensure good financial decisions are made and do my best to provide vision and leadership to shape the future of the Manawatu District to make it a better place to live, work and visit.” Real estate agent Michael Ford said his focus was making the Manawatu District Council one of the most approachable and businessfriendly councils in the country. He wasn’t concerned about the new council beginning in the middle of

some big projects, such as the Feilding Wastewater Treatment Plant. “We’ve got a good balance of experience and new faces. We’ve got an accountant in Campbell, and he isn’t a stranger to big projects.” Phil Marsh’s background is in agri-management, sales and marketing and owner of Paper Plus in Fielding. “Passions are family, community, occasional golf and promoting Manawatu District with its diverse communities.”

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

The family’s farming partnership also run 1,800 Perendales and 110 Simmental cattle on their two adjoining land blocks, Tirohanga

The Horsch planter enables precision planting of maize, soya beans, sunflower, fodder beets and oilseed rape. The advanced technology allows for very accurate planting of multiple types of seeds. This planter plants 50cm (20”) rows as opposed to the normal 75cm (30”) rows for maize silage to potentially increase weight yields of the crop by increasing the gap between the plants in the row. 50cm(20”) rows seem to be the way of the future! Fodder beet can now be planted with fertilizer at planting which is most beneficial.

required. Brian and Olive retired from the farming partnership in 2015 but Brian is still actively involved in the dayto-day work. Kerry said since signing the Whole Farm Plan with Horizons Regional Council, pine trees have been planted on the farm’s steeper slopes, with most of the Mangaiti Block planted. Money from this project has been reinvested in the purchase of additional easy country from a neighbouring property. This means that the farm is now a predominantly flat and easy hill farm rather than one that is mainly hard, hill country. Mangaiti Merino Stud was formed following the purchase of stud ewes and rams from the Rotoma dispersal sale in 1995. Since then, Merino numbers have been built up through natural increase and replacement rams bred. “While we have sold some rams, our main focus has been on enhancing our flock to improve the overall quality of the wool that we can grow in our conditions,”

said Kerry. Renowned Merino sheep classer Gordon McMaster has given the Thompson family expert support in this area since 2003. Introducing Australian and South African genetics to their Mangaiti Merino flock has seen the animals increase in size and fertility. Although the local climate is wetter, with an average annual rainfall of 1,250mm, and experiences higher humidity than the South Island, there hasn’t been any sign of footrot in the Mangaiti flock. The Thompson’s put this down to the farm’s volcanic soils and careful choice of genetic strain. Parasites are managed through working closely with Wanganui Vet Services. Brian and Kerry found that to shed water effectively, they needed to breed sheep with fleeces less than 20 microns. “With our relatively high annual rainfall we find that fleeces that let water in have an unacceptable level of colour.”

Kerry said the Merinos are run for their fine wool clip and the Perendales for fat lambs, sold both direct to the works and store. The Merinos are shorn from May to July and the wool sold through New Zealand Merino — a farmer-owned company that specialises in the marketing of Merino wool and other Merino products. About one third of the fleece wool is sold on contract to Icebreaker and the balance is sold via auction in Melbourne. The farm is certified as part of New Zealand Merino’s ZQ Fibre programme. Kerry said running Merinos works well financially for the farming partnership. “It spreads our income through the year as we get paid for Merino wool and meat at different times of the year to when income from the Perendales comes in.” Simmental cattle provide further diversification with income from weaner steers and dry cows. “However, cattle are mainly run as a tool for managing pasture quality.” In the last 18 months, Kerry and Julie have become actively involved with the Merino benchmarking group as they seek to improve the performance of their Merinos. This has already begun to show benefits and is leading to an active review of the future of the stud operation. “Advances being made by the Production Science team in New

Zealand Merino, and the development of Estimate Breeding Values by South Island studs mean that we either need to put the money into doing this ourselves, or we need to move to buying in rams from these studs.”

Ross’s grandfather was a member of parliament for Manawatu from 1922 to 1935, and his father, brother, uncle and a cousin all served on various councils and boards. As a young child, Ross spent his early years on a Pohangina Valley farm before the family moved into Palmerston North. After finishing school, he worked on several farms throughout New Zealand, learning how to shear sheep along the way. A one-year diploma in sheep farming at Massey University followed. Ross then set off on his OE, working on sheep farms in England and Scotland before heading to Oregon in the United States of America. During his five-year stay in Oregon, he established and managed two sheep farms. When Ross returned to New Zealand, he went shearing and also became a registered master builder. He saved his earnings, leased his first farm, and married Marilyn. In 1982, the couple

rape seed and 62 acres of processed peas are planned for this season. A 130 acre free-draining property, bordering the Manawatu River near Ashhurst, is ideal for wintering cattle. Deer are finished on an 800 acre farm near Halcombe. Ross said it’s an advantage having different farms in several locations. “The soil on our Roberts Line farm is heavy so stock can be moved to the freedraining river block for winter grazing.” Ross and one other labour unit manage three of the farms. Scott and a stock manager take care of the Halcombe farm. Lambs, which are predominantly Romney, are sold to either Ovation meatworks in Feilding or through livestock agents. “We traded 2,000 lambs over the winter,” said Ross. Along with the Wagyu cattle, other stock are bought and sold on. “Numbers fluctuate a bit.” A relatively new enterprise for Linkfarm is focussing on breeding stud Charolais sheep. Scott has established a Charolais sheep stud flock called Elite Charolais on the Halcombe farm. On that property, which he manages with an additional labour unit, Scott farms sheep, Wagyu cattle and deer, along with cropping processed peas, winter wheat, canola rape and fodder beet. Ross said fodder beet is grown as the main supplementary feed crop for Linkfarm. “We’ve grown 50 acres of canola rape for the first time this year and will get two grazings off it and a cash crop.” Ross has always had an interest in serving the community through school

committees, as a Board of Trustees member, president of the Fitzherbert Lions Club, and as a Farmlands director, followed by his role as a Palmerston North city councillor. “I went along to a ward meeting one night and was elected. Council added another dimension to my life,” said Ross. As a city councillor, Ross’s portfolio took in the rural villages of Longburn, Ashhurst and Bunnythorpe. To protect productive land for farming in the future, Ross was a strong opponent of ruralresidential subdivision on high-class soils. He was also instrumental in the establishment of a shared pathway from Kelvin Grove to Whakarongo School. Ross said he has met a good group of people prepared to help themselves with some additional assistance from the council.

“There’s a lot of good people out there,” he said. In 1995 the Linklater family sold 74 acres of land to the Palmerston North City Council with the intention of creating a reserve. Linklater Reserve, which surrounds the family’s Roberts Line farm on the edge of the city, is used by the public for walking, cycling, picnicking and as a venue for dog events. Ross retired at his own will from the council and as a Resource Management Act commissioner. He said all the material required to be read before meetings won’t be missed. Ross placed nine years of the accumulated paperwork on his cattle scales to find it reached a total of 560kgs. With more leisure time now available, Ross is looking forward to spending more time with his family, on their farms, travelling and cycling.

COME & JOIN ME For those of you who have experienced a fully guided holiday, you will know that everything is taken care of by your tour escort — from the moment you leave home. All international and domestic flights, 3 ½-4 star accommodation, transport, most meals, tours and the use of expert local guides are planned and booked with expert care and attention to detail. For those that don’t know me, my name is Pam Hardy and I am the owner of YOU Travel Levin. We have been in the travel business for over 30 years and one of our specialties is organising and conducting escorted tours. I was privileged to escort a group of clients to South America in July 2015 and then in October 2015, travel with a group of fellow travel agents to South America and Patagonia. Both trips left a lasting impression with me and I was determined to take a trip to even greater heights of excitement and interest in 2017, by including a very special cruise aboard the MV Skorpios III which includes some breath taking scenery as we cruise up the Chilean coast, while including some of the other fabulous highlights of both of those previous tours. My 23-night tour is planned for mid March and as usual, will be fully escorted from New Zealand and (almost) all inclusive. We will commence with a 3-night cruise that sails through the Magellanic Fjords and channels of the Southern Ice Fields on the ‘Kaweskar’ route, travelling 380 miles and covering most of the glaciers in the area — Amalia, El Brujo, Bernal and Herman — and those located in the area of Fiordo Calvo. We spend three nights at The Singular Patagonia, a beautiful hotel which has been completely restored after its previous life spent as a livestock processing unit that is full of century-old farm machinery

and memorabilia, and from where we will explore the famed Torres del Paine National Park. In Buenos Aires, also known as the Paris of the Americas due to its elegant 19th and 20th century architecture, you will be wowed by the dinner and Tango show “La Ventana” and the bohemian atmosphere of the La Boca area. As well as the well known sites of Rio de Janeiro, there will be a particular gastronomic highlight included before heading to view the breath-taking majesty of Iguazu Falls. From Lima, Peru’s cultural centre and once one of the most important cities in the Americas under Spanish colonial rule, we head to Cuzco — the most important city of the Inca Empire and the experience of which is truly unforgettable. Machu Picchu or the Lost City of the Incas is definitely a “bucket list” tick and the boutique hotels where we stay along the tour will charm your socks off. An amazing train journey takes us across the Altiplano to Puno, visiting the traditional floating reed islands of the Uros Indians on beautiful Lake Titicaca. It is difficult to convey the features and the stunning contrast of history, scenery, and culture that this tour offers, in so few words, but also to describe the comfort and ease with which World Journeys organise and take care of their clients. Call in for a chat, phone or email me for a full colour itinerary. This tour is limited to 14 people only so that you get the most personal experience possible and as such, places will fill fast.

EDUCATION Building careers through partnership

Quality Caring Christian Education with the world at your doorstep! Study and live with our co-educational family from throughout New Zealand and across the Pacific.

by Andy Bryenton

When the earth shook in Christchurch, it wasn’t just the physical face of the city which was changed forever. At the forefront of this change has been ITAB — the Industry Training Association for Building. Teaming up with polytechnics to blend the best of academic and hands-on learning, this initiative was the brainchild of the Certified Builders Association, along with several large building companies and tertiary institutes. It’s no surprise that UCOL in Palmerston North are big supporters, helping get up-and-coming builders into the programme. With a combination of theoretical study and actual real world experience, the ITAB course builds toward the nationally recognised National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4, playing to the strengths of those who learn best when ‘doing’ rather than engaged in bookwork alone. Employers are keen to enlist graduates of this programme, which boasts ‘New Zealand’s most employable apprentices’. After four years of theory and practice, including plenty

of time working closely with building professionals on real sites, graduates have built up a formidable arsenal of skills. The ITAB students have found a way to test their mettle against one another, with the organisation holding both regional and national competitions to find the best of the best. This year’s challenge in Palmerston North saw apprentices competing to build against the clock, tackling projects such as wall framing, staircases and more. Young builder Staci King came out on top, scoring an accolade which is sure to be a signpost toward a bright future in the industry. “Given that all members of Certified Builders are required to be tradecertified, a major focus for us is helping to foster more quality apprentices,” said Certified Builders Chief Executive, Grant Florence. “With housing availability in New Zealand such a major issue, ensuring that there are enough high quality, qualified builders is vital for the country.”

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

The honest truth? I felt honoured to be included in a group of 11 farmers and advisers who recently converged on the South Island for a study tour over a week. Our main purpose was to observe better management systems on dairy farms, particularly in respect to biological and chemical usage of fertiliser. Our first destination was the

Dairy NZ Field day at Back Track Farms in Methven, Canterbury. This is a three year study comparing the two systems, the biological farm being managed under the Albrecht-Kinsey system and the xhemical farm under the Ballance Agri-Nutrients approach. We are currently on Year 2 and the outline of the trial was set out in the January 2014 Dairy Exporter magazine. My mission was to gather all the information available to us, including the initial parameters, the Albrecht-Kinsey process and the approach of Ballance Agri-Nutrients as referenced from their website and general client practice in New Zealand. I have attended the last two annual Fieldays where the annual scientific measurements have been presented. I have observed that to go to a single field day without looking at the whole picture, will give a totally different outcome to a person’s thinking if they are looking for an indicator of the honest truth. Both parties that are involved with the fertiliser have full and open access to fertiliser tests,

applications and the results of those applications. It was interesting to see that the biological side is producing generally more positive results. At the May Field Day at Back Track Farms the Albecht-Kinsey farm reported 500 kgs/ ha more grass grown over the year than the chemical farm while using 43 units of Nitrogen/ha less. More clover growth, higher winter soil temperature, higher production per hectare, lower Somatic Cell Count and a higher Effective Farm Surplus were all points to be noted in support of the Albrecht-Kinsey farm. On our recent visit to the Dairy NZ Field Day on October 6, the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was still showing positive gains over and above the chemical farm, namely higher soil temperatures, cows producing 2.4 kgs MS/cow/day compared to 2.2, 5.57 kgs MS/ha/day compared to 5.26 and 13 cows showing clinical milk fever compared to 35. An observation and comment made was that the higher production and better clean-up of pasture on the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was from better quality pasture because of higher amounts of clover. In recent months the Albrecht-Kinsey system has been regarded as ‘pseudoscience’ by a leading soil scientist who also suggests that science has already proved that any innovation is just wasting tax payer’s money particularly relating to soil fertility. If this soil scientist is referring to the science which is being practised in New Zealand by Ballance Agri-Nutrients, then let’s take a look at them. Their website is very impressive and there are a couple of very important

scientific standards that they follow. Many farmers in New Zealand would agree that their standard advice is to have a pH in the soil of between 5.8 and 6.0. In fact their leading scientist had an article at the beginning of the 2015 Dairy season stating that if the pH is 5.9, then you are wasting your money putting on fertiliser that would increase it. Based on this information, I went to the May 2016 Field Day to find that the pH on the Ballance Agri-Nutrients farm was sitting at 6.3. Upon questioning them how they got that pH to 6.3, they replied that they had applied 2.5 tonne/ ha of lime. My next question of course was “Did they know what the pH was before they applied that lime?” They said that ‘Yes, it was 5.9 pH’. A sceptic might suggest that Ballance Agri-Nutirents are changing their policies to ‘keep up’ with the positive advantages being shown by the AlbrechtKinsey system. At the October 6 Field Day there was a positive move from the biological side to target a reduction in the amount of nitrogen applied yet again from 117 kgs/ha/year to around 100 kgs/ha/year. Discussions at that Field Day suggested that the chemical farm would follow suit. For Ballance to copy and follow the Albrecht-Kinsey system, then there will not be any significant difference which is, of course, what they are reporting. My conclusion is that the AlbrechtKinsey system of soil fertility in this trial is leading science and Ballance AgriNutrients are learning a lot from it. The next field day should prove interesting.

Glammies to celebrate a decade of competition This year’s search for the nation’s top-tasting lamb will celebrate the 10th anniversary Beef + Lamb New Zealand Glammies competition. The Producer of the Decade will also be determined following the 2017 results.

The Gardyne family were last year’s grand champions

Farmers and retailers nationwide are invited to enter their lamb into the Glammies. The meat will be scientifically assessed by Carne Technologies in Cambridge, undergoing testing for tenderness, yield, succulence and colour. The top four entries from five categories will make it through to the final stage of the competition — a taste test — held at the Wanaka A&P Show on March 10. Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO Sam McIvor said the competition is a keenly anticipated event for New Zealand farmers and a way for them to display their world class produce. “The competition is a chance to celebrate top quality lamb and the New Zealand farmers who produce it. “We all know it’s a Kiwi favourite and our lamb is also preferred by consumers around the world.” Since receiving the

PREVENT FIRES

2016 Grand Champion award, Robert Gardyne from Oturehua has experienced tremendous success. “Last year I won the competition with a high-country lamb which was the first year this has happened.” He said this goes to show the vast range of quality products farmers produce. “Furthermore, this competition has helped me tell my story and promote something that means so much to me and other New Zealand farmers.” The Glammies competition covers five categories including Best of Breed — Traditional, Best of Breed — Crossbreed, Best of Breed — Terminal Cross, Best of Breed — Open, and Retailer. Farmer competition entries close on December 2 with the retailer contest entries closing on January 13. Entry forms and additional information can be found at www.beeflambnz.co.nz.

Taking pressure off sore joints

Sometimes health problems can become a sort of vicious cycle. Osteoarthritis can cause significant joint pain which limits mobility and can reduce the ability to exercise. Reduced mobility leads to weight gain which further reduces mobility and add extra stress to arthritic joints. I have had many clients in this situation and it can be very distressing. When someone is overweight and has arthritis in weight-bearing joints my goal with diet is initially just to create a healthier diet. If we just focus on weight loss this can create another cycle of yoyo dieting which has limited benefits and is a cause of psychological stress. Every meal should be nutrient dense with anti-inflammatory fats and regular protein. A nutrient dense breakfast could be eggs or wholegrain oats with freshly ground flaxseeds, dark berries and good yoghurt. Morning tea could be a piece of fruit and some raw almonds. Lunch could be a fish and avocado salad with olive oil and cider vinegar dressing. Afternoon tea homemade hummus and vegetable sticks. For dinner some protein, lots of raw and cooked low starch vegetables with

What is Bettaflex?

• Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

anti-inflammatory oils such as olive, avocado or coconut. To make a difference we need to start to break the cycle. We start with a nutrient dense diet that is at the same time anti-inflammatory that will over time result in weight loss. Supplements are very important and I add these like a 3 legged stool. Firstly we add antioxidants to slow the rate of cartilage loss. We then reduce inflammation with fish oils and curcumin (from turmeric) then add joint compounds especially chondroitin at over 800mg daily. These combined measure help reduce pain, reduce weight, improve mobility and the real payoff are improvements in energy and general health. Fee free top contact me to discuss your situation. License to Farm It just had to happen. The chemical corporations domination of how farming should be, has taken us further and further away from the reality of real farming, hooking us into a chemical system that is costing the farmers dearly and locking us into low return commodity markets; where is the future in that! If you open your heart and your mind you will recognise the rising consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, produced in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. This is the new market and it is growing! Consumers have had enough of toxic chemicals in their food. They don’t want genetically modified food products, all

they want is good wholesome healthy food, that’s not too much to ask for and it is an easy recipe to provide, but let go the chemicals first. Agrissentials multi-mineral microbial rich ORGANX™ fertilisers can change your farming system overnight. The process is seamless and extremely simple, basically, all that is involved, is to

trade your synthetic, soluble, soil eroding chemical nutrients for Agrissentials multimineral, microbial rich, soil regenerating natural fertilisers, full of life and vitality. The corporate science that has been dominating our planet since the 1980’s, is just that; self-serving corporate science. For the past 30 years corporate science has been promising cures, but they never seem to evolve. The problem is that the chemists don’t want to stop the money flow. In reality they are trying to speed the business up by vaccinating every part of life — plants, animals and humans. So, from my point of view, keep your head down, but make sure your butt is not sticking up, because it will surely get needled. As a kid growing up in the 1940’s through to the 1970’s we recognised water as a healthy, safe commodity, to the extent that if you were thirsty you could safely drink out of the nearest puddle to you, or the streams, rivers and lakes. That was the system — you had trust in the water. However, over the past 40 odd years the heavy use of toxic chemical sprays and fertilisers have already reached a point, where water is not safe to drink. During the 1980’s, as a commercial grower, I read an article in an agricultural journal which stated that there were 10 thousand tonnes of toxic

chemical products sprayed throughout the planet every 24 hours. I was one of those people spraying toxic chemicals. Bad boy? Johnny! Go to the back of the class! Do we really need a license to farm? From the late 1940’s to the 1980’s our farmers were recognised as the best and most cost efficient farmers on our planet. We had farming intelligence way ahead of any other country and a strong team of independent scientists, funded by the tax payer, taking our farmers to new heights. It was a magic period, with plenty of money circulating throughout all towns. Farming is a natural process and governed by natural laws that if followed will influence the production on the farm, keeping the whole system in a natural healthy state. Nature is all about health and fertility. Chemicals have the opposite effect, which favours the chemists. So, don’t panic, go Organx™ with Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers. Holiday Guide Diverse district to explore by Denise Gunn

With mountain ranges, rivers and the Tasman Sea forming the Manawatu district’s physical boundaries, these natural features also offer an outdoor playground for exploration. A selection of parks and reserves scattered throughout the district provide a variety of camping and picnic areas, swimming holes and bush walks. One of the most popular bush walks is the Manawatu Gorge Walk or the shorter Manawatu Gorge Tawa Loop Walk. Both walks offer sweeping views of the Manawatu and Tararua districts, and down into the Manawatu Gorge. The Country Road scenic touring routes, with maps available from i-SITEs, offer clear directions to areas off the main highways and opportunities to discover hidden treasures. These journeys through heartland New Zealand all cover a reasonably short driving distance. Giant wind turbines, located on the Saddle Road, are visible from most of the district. As the Saddle Road winds upwards towards the Te Apiti wind farm, a visitor area provides a viewing platform and the chance to get up close as a turbine whirrs overhead. Voted New Zealand’s most beautiful town 15 times, Feilding has a relaxed atmosphere filled with rural heritage. Take a guided tour through the Feilding saleyards — the biggest in New Zealand

For those of us that live and play here this is no real surprise at all. For decades Whanganui has been one of the North Island’s adventure playgrounds for all sorts of activity given the climate, the beaches (yes, we have three and are a coastal city), the wonderful Whanganui River and the Whanganui National Park. Residents enjoy a temperate climate with mean temperatures of 9.4°C in winter and 18.2°C in summer with an average 2100 hours of sunshine per annum — slightly above the national average. Whanganui is also very central and easily accessible for most — within three hours drive for the lower North Island from most cities and an hour’s flight from Auckland. The city’s heritage is obvious when visiting — from the stunning architecture and buildings to the Durie Hill Underground Elevator and Memorial Tower, and numerous marae and taonga (treasures) in the Whanganui Regional Museum. FROM THE GROUND UP The answer lies beneath Building begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home define what is to grow above. But in fact, like the rest of the house, this ‘home base’ will need to revisited during the life of the house. This may be more so in rural areas where some farm buildings may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away causing them to fail, while ground conditions may change from a number of causes — water reticulation, or even earth tremors. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations

or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. Ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job and different suppliers use different methods —

some cut holes in the floor for access and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to plan ahead.

Technology for a future proof home The recent ‘big reveal’ by inventor and Tesla corporation owner Elon Musk of solar-electric tiles for future homes has amazed many but not those already involved in the building industry. Technology which incorporates power saving or sustainable elements is firmly in fashion, with opinions changing here in New Zealand to follow global trends. While it may be some time before Tesla’s photovoltaic tiles replace Kiwi corrugated steel on the nation’s roofs, a groundswell of change has moved through the building industry already. Stolidly accepted mainstays of a new build like the hot water heater and septic tank are being ousted by modern alternatives such as califonts, solar hot water heaters, composting waste systems and efficient heat pumps. Where once the design of a home was dictated by right angles and Victorian aesthetics, today’s homes work with the land to trap available sunlight, breathe with the seasons and minimise energy wastage.

NATURAL BARK & COMPOST

In fact, the top three technologies asked about in builds and renovations all revolve around saving energy and hence saving money. Photovoltaic cells, windmills and battery arrays are often mooted by prospective home owners, and a calculation as to how soon the investment in such infrastructure will be offset is the critical figure here. Insulation, once the preserve of a small amount of pink batts in the roof, is now acknowledged as vital all over. And the cost of producing hot water has been addressed with a host of new options, calling on homeowners to decide

between not just gas califonts, solar heaters, ‘wet-back’ wood fires and heat pump electric cylinders, but also hybrid combi-systems of all the above. When looking at new technology to make your new build or renovation sustainable, it’s wise to consider the payback time of the system you choose. While there is certainly a sense of pride in reducing our impact on the planet, the real cost to benefit analysis comes down to increasing the value of your home and decreasing outgoings to power companies within a span of years, not decades.

The three key things to remember are: you must ensure the end result is healthy, safe and durable, you meet your legal obligations and you protect your rights. Get familiar with the process before you start, so that you can plan well and build safe, healthy buildings for people using them now and any future users as well as complying with the Building Act and the Building Code. Most building work will require a building consent to show how it meets the requirements of specific Building Code clauses before you start working on the project. Some building work, such as structural work or work on the external envelope of the building, may be restricted building work. If so, you’ll need a licensed building practitioner to design it, build it, or supervise the work. You also need to find out about the land and any need for resource consent or approvals related to the district plan. Building work is any work done in relation to the construction or alteration of a building. This includes any work on your home, premises or other structure, such as a garage, retaining walls and fences. Some demolition

Mating and lameness How is your preparation for mating going? As this will be the focus for most farmers at the moment I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit about lameness that is more specific to this time of the year — that is lameness in front feet as well as lameness in bulls. It is normal to get more lameness in front feet at this time of the year compared to other times. Cows are bulling and when they come off the ridden cow they land on their front feet. This produces more traumas to deal with than normal walking. There is not really any suspension in the front feet just like there is no suspension in human feet. People can create suspension by bending their knees, but a cow can’t do that with their front feet, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on the locomotion apparatus when they do land on their front feet. Did you know that you could break your legs if you jump off the back of a truck and you keep your legs straight? The amount of pressure that the average person puts on their feet by

jumping off the back of a truck is about 1,000kg. So it is no wonder that you do major damage if you keep your legs straight. In the same way there is a lot of force going on to the front feet of a cow when they ride another cow. A lot of the lameness in the front feet is ligament damage but we do get more hoof problems as well. This does not mean that this sort of lameness is purely caused by physical force. Again, the cow must have weakened claws from laminitis and then physical force will make the problem worse resulting in lameness. If it was purely caused by physical force, we would see a lot more problems because most cows do come on heat but in comparison there are not many going lame on their front feet. We can’t stop cows from riding each other and we actually don’t want to stop it so we have to look at minimising the stress levels on them and make sure that our tracks and holding yards are stone free. Lameness in bulls is slightly different.

A few things are happening with bulls when they arrive on the farm and when they go with the cows. For one the environment is totally different — different food, different routines and different lifestyle. I don’t think the testosterone levels will have an effect on laminitis but all the other changes currently do. We do have some physical problems as well. The wear pattern in animals that only walk on pasture is different from animals that walk on hard surfaces. When bulls all of a sudden walk on hard surfaces their hooves wear faster, and it will take about six weeks for the bull to adjust the growth rate to the wearing rate so a lot of bulls end up with thin soles. I think that the key is to have enough bulls to be able to rotate them and make sure that you use them in short bursts. Should you be interested in learning

The value of effluent management Clean waterways are an ongoing rural concern highlighted by the fact that, tens of thousands of shoreline plantings have begun to make a big difference in water quality. But the real key to quality long term lies with the farmer. On the agricultural front the value of animal effluent is a fact of life and has consequences for the bottom line. Effluent disposal also means effluent utilisation. The by product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser. It contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture. The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium sized rural town. When spread over land and applied correctly the effluent of 100 cows can Functional Fertiliser Ltd have created

save thousands of dollars. While it might be ‘liquid gold’ water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away. Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions. Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as polluting nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then there is ground water itself that must be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. Getting a

certified assessor can be good practice, particularly when effluent systems have been upgraded. You may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and

four hours to complete. A report is then prepared for the farm owner or manager. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors. All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on.

The mystery of pumps In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings? I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last. It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians.

Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point — is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability to produce the required pressure at reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow.

Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs will laugh at my equation above as there are more factors to it than this, but my intention is merely to give the layman some warning signs of what may work or not. NPSH available varies massively from pump to pump! 2. Have you the right of return if it doesn’t meet specs? What is the cost of this ‘experiment’? eg you may have to change mounting points, flanges,

engineering, etc if it doesn’t work and you need to fit another model. Don’t buy a pig in a poke! 3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. Please contact Clement (Clem) Powell on 0800 426 296 for more information. Next time: The Mystery of Couplings

New chapter in a motoring legend by Andy Bryenton

There are some names in the world of internal combustion which evoke images of racing glory, grand-touring luxury or off-road grit. Just mention Rolls-Royce, Ferrari or Land Rover, and a whole history springs to mind. But there are few, even in such lofty company, which call up such a tradition as that of the United States’ most famous two-wheeled icon — Harley Davidson. With a history spanning over a century, this is one badge embraced by racers, weekend cruisers and rebels alike. From the original ‘silent grey fellow’ through to the ‘knucklehead’ V-twin of World War Two, through to the big powerful V-rod of the present day, the story of the machines from Milwaukee would seem to describe an upward curve of displacement and power. But that’s a stereotype which, in true rebellious fashion, Harley Davidson is set to challenge with its Street 500 range. Stripped back and pared down to the essentials of city riding, the Street 500 is a pure Harley down to the nuts and bolts, but it is no big highway cruiser. With a 500cc Revolution X engine, finely balanced frame and frugal fuel economy, this is a bike meant to take

on the competition in a sector usually dominated by the Japanese motorcycle giants. It’s not the first Harley Davidson to go below the 883 Sportster in terms of displacement, but it is a new take on a classic design, reminiscent in many ways of classic British bikes from the golden age rather than the wicked custom Road Kings and Fat Boys which made the Harley name synonymous with two-wheeled power and style. That may seem a touch blasphemous, but it’s a growing market niche in the crowded urban jungle. The Street 500 is, as you’d expect from a real HD, no slouch when the horizon beckons. Liquid cooling means the 500 never loses its cool in gridlock, but this lightest Harley of all still packs a wallop of torque when the lights turn green. In true form for a machine bearing the classic black and orange badge, there’s no part of the Street 500 which doesn’t look mean, lean and customisable.

BE IN TO WIN AN EXTRA SET OF WHEELS

It’s a breath of fresh air in more ways than one — a city cruiser proudly selfdescribed as a ‘cafe racer’, but one which stands out in the crowd, with retro styling cues that leave no doubt as to its heritage. It’s a Harley Davidson for those

who may never have considered getting into the saddle of this iconic brand — an enticement away from the Japanese and Euro street fighters and into a very affordable take on motorcycling’s most enduring classic.

Pushing the limits of performance by Andy Bryenton

Racing refines vehicles — it subjects them to terrifying stresses, to endurance events under the baking hot sun and to flat-out sprints which test parts to their limits. Racing off-road is even more brutal than on the track and the new Can-Am Maverick X3 has been forged in that crucible. It’s been indelibly branded by the experience. There are two strands to what makes this off-road side-by-side ever so slightly mad — in the same league as freediving with sharks. It’s powerful in a way not seen before in such a machine, turning up the heat with 154 horsepower. It handles that unstoppable wave of force with measured precision, floating over choppy terrain as though it’s not there. Too much? Traditionalists would say it surely is. But it’s too much in a way that transcends mere sanity. First, the power. There has been an arms race at the top of the side-by-side world for some time now and this new Rotax mill represents Can-Am laying down the biggest cannon yet. Triple cylindered like the legendary Triumph bikes of old, but with the added whack of an intercooler turbo, this engine propels the lightweight Maverick X3 from 0–60 miles per hour in under 5 seconds. Once again, some would call it a case of overkill — but it

generates some truly unhinged smiles. The neat trick here, however, is sending that power to the ground without simply kicking up vast rooster tails of dust. Can-Am are also well aware of the fact that their tri-cylinder rocketship is likely to be deployed on some seriously gnarly terrain, so to avoid having drivers shaken to pieces they’ve bolted on some of the most serious Fox Podium shocks ever seen. With a massive 2-foot travel, these monsters soak up withering amounts of punishment. Coupled with a trophytruck style chassis the whole setup glides over the badlands and sands like a bullet. The wheels and suspension work furiously beneath, keeping as much contact as possible with the earth to transfer that snarling power, while the pilot and co-pilot remain snug in a cage of steel, barely feeling the jolts. When side-by-side off-roaders first came to these shores it was in their

Forged in the desert, refined in the workshop, the Can-Am Maverick packs 154 horsepower

role as serious farm vehicles, while off-road speed was the domain of mad machines welded up from pipe steel by mud-spattered prophets in their sheds. Today, they rank in the same field as the Ariel Nomad and the ubiquitous Baja Bug. The Maverick X3 is the crossover point between fun and serious motorsport — a white knuckled portrait of excess not for the faint of heart, or those short of recreational cash. Then again, the price tag is far less than that of a full-size trophy truck or sandrail — and the smiles-per-dollar value is through the roof. That’s the method in all this highpowered apparent madness — making it safe and fun to rip through harsh terrain with a grin from ear to ear under your helmet.

BATTERY ADDITIVE

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

Preparing for tidal waves

31

Tsunami event preparedness public meetings will be held for Himatangi on Saturday November 26, at 11am and at Tangimoana at 1.30pm, in conjunction with Manawatu District Neighbourhood Support. Large tsunami information signs are to be installed at local coastal settlements in the next month following community meetings about an increased risk of tsunami inundation. On the back of recent research showing tsunamis could potentially be 50% bigger than previously estimated on the lower west coast of the North Island, Regional Emergency Management will be briefing coastal communities on recognising the natural warning signs and local evacuation arrangements. Manawatu District Emergency Management Advisor, Ross Brannigan, will explain that the likelihood of a tsunami is still low — either a 500 year event or a 2,500 year event — but the scientific modelling completed by GNS

Science showed the tsunamis waves could potentially be up to 6m high rather than the previous maximum of 4m from a regional source. A local source tsunami could be even bigger than that. “This makes a big difference on the amount of inundation inland, and while the overall risk is still low, it is higher in terms of consequences, and is something we have to accept and prepare for. “Good signage and good public information is needed for not only locals but visitors and tourists. People are drawn to the coast so we need them to be aware of the hazards and signs that cause a tsunami with very little lead in time.”
