The recycled post Fonterra has teamed up with a Kiwi-owned startup, Future Post to provide an innovative way to improve on-farm sustainability by turning milk bottles and other soft plastics into fence posts for kiwi farms. “This partnership provides farmers with a more environmentally-friendly fencing option, made from the packaging of our farmers’ milk, which is pretty special,” says Fonterra Brands New Zealand’s Sustainability and Environment manager, Larisa Thathiah. “It is not enough to just recycle anymore: it is about creating less waste full stop, or at least turning it into something useful. That is why these fence posts are so exciting — they are made from 100 per cent recycled material, and have a life expectancy of more than 50 years.” The Future Post partnership is the latest waste reduction initiative from Fonterra. Managing director of Future Post, Jerome Wenzlick, says it is great to have support from Fonterra, and he is looking forward to developing other sustainable products for farmers. “What we are doing is repurposing waste that could have gone to landfill and turning it into a valuable product

for consumers. Our partnership with Fonterra gives us access to a steady supply of raw material from the co-op’s own recycling initiatives. It also gives us access to a network of nationwide Farm Source stores that can sell the fence posts, and access to 10,000 farmers who are actively engaged in environmental initiatives, like fencing to keep cows out of waterways and planting along river banks. “Future Post is a start-up, but we have plans for some new products in 2019, including those for non-farming sectors.” Anchor Light Proof milk bottles are collected from the Fonterra Takanini site and transported to the Future Post Waiuku plant, where they are mixed with soft plastics and turned into fence posts. The fence posts will be available in selected Fonterra Farm Source stores across the North Island in the New Year, with plans to launch in South Island stores mid-2019.

THE INCREDIBLE ORCHID by Ann van Engelen

An industrial chemist by profession, Ross Tucker creates exotic and unusual orchids — displaying to the world a vast array of creativity and succession of the plants, which date back thousands of years.

“O

rchids can flower all year round, and apart from hobby growers, we are probably the one exotic speciality store in the country selling online at Tucker Orchids,” says Ross. Being a chemist, he also developed a fertiliser ‘Orchid Tucker’ and plants generally some orchids, can bloom within six weeks of use. “My interest began because my grandfather grew orchids as a gardener in England for a ‘Lord’ at a country estate. After he fought in World War One, he came here and brought plants with him and grew slipper orchids for the cut flower market. My mother had them in the yard, and they needed rescuing,” says Ross. The main method of reproducing orchids is through flasks

or tissue culture, and Ross understood the technical terms in books he read so began producing flasks of orchids — approximately 25 plants grow in a glass jar via seed or reproduction and mericloning. “I added varieties and experimented reproducing them. As a hobby grower, I overproduced quickly and ran out of space but with the New Zealand cut flower industry in its infancy around the 1970s they needed stock, so we became a supplier. “In the beginning orchid exports were financially profitable, if not better than the New Zealand wine industry. Due to government restrictions over the past 30 years, it is now almost a non-existent export industry. We had approximately 300 growers exporting cymbidium cut

flowers across the world, and we are now down to 30 because MPI put so many rules in place with no support and that businesses got sold up. “It was devastating for our growers, and the Taiwanese saw the opportunity and took our market and customers. They now earn around seven billion dollars a year. “I now produce pot plant orchids for the New Zealand market and some varieties most people have never seen. Some are so rare; they cannot be exported, including New Zealand natives. Many are threatened, and the national orchid body are trying to conserve them but keep running up against issues with MPI restrictions — because MPI don’t understand the plant biology and should consult with people that are experts not rely on their limited knowledge.” Ross sends plants offshore believing other countries will be the heroes and keep them in circulation. “I brought a shipment in from China, and MPI literally took plants that were 6,000 years old and destroyed them. They just killed them with no understanding of what it was they were destroying — that is horrific,” says Ross. “I believe Chinese philosopher Confucius grew them thousands of years ago. The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taiwan has the rice drawings of orchids. Scientific research is phenomenal, and documentaries note that Darwin watched orchids and they really do seek a specific pollinator.

“The subspecies of an insect is specific to each genera, and without that pollinator, you cannot keep the orchid alive in its natural environment. MPI refuse to understand; it is that simple and uncalled for restrictions mean plants die.” “Ross finds perfumed ones fascinating and hybridises colours, forms and scents. Orchids grow in every climate and continent except Antarctica that I know of. “Some grow under snow, die down and return in spring. It is the most evolved plant in the plant kingdom and its reproduction is often called ‘sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll’. “This is because some mimic the insect to attract it to procreate, some produce a drug, which gets their pollinator high and some offer pheromones.” Ross breeds plants unique to New Zealand and speaks at events around the world. “My line is highly scented and called Zygopetalum, which means tongue. We have developed scents and have thousands of varieties on-site, but there are some 33,000 species worldwide yet to collect. Other countries are driven by orchids, and New Zealand will catch up once MPI scientists learn and understand what they are dealing with instead of destroying them. “We constantly produce new varieties because people are collectors and keeping it fresh is important. I love developing new varieties.

New volunteer joins Farming for Hospice BY DENISE GUNN With more than three decades in his career as a livestock agent behind him, Simon McKay is well-versed with buying and selling stock. Now, as the new volunteer convenor for Farming for Hospice, Simon is putting that knowledge and his rural connections towards the scheme, raising vital funds for Arohanui Hospice.

S

imon was approached to consider the role by the scheme’s former convenor, Derek Tuck. Although Simon had no previous involvement with Arohanui Hospice, it didn’t take long for him to make a decision. “Being familiar with the regions the hospice operates in, and knowing a vast majority of the farming families, along with experience in the livestock industry, made it an easy decision to accept the position,” said Simon. Following a predominantly sheep and beef farming background in Apiti,

Pakihikura and Porangahau, Simon settled on a career as a livestock agent back in 1969. “My employers at the time, Mclean Bros in Porangahau, pointed out the benefits of working for a company, Dalgety NZ Ltd, with defined career paths,” said Simon. “They advised me to take the opportunity and go for it with their full support.” During his career, Simon covered the Manawatu, southern Hawke’s Bay, northern Wairarapa and Southland regions. He enjoyed his

involvement with farming families through the good times and the bad and also made life-long friendships and associations with many people. Arohanui Hospice serves a population of nearly 200,000 people, covering Palmerston North City, the Manawatu, Tararua, Rangitikei and Horowhenua districts, as well as Otaki. Although partially funded by the government through MidCentral District Health Board (DHB) and Whanganui (DHB), 44% of its operational funding needs to be fundraised. That equates to a further $2.82 million this financial year, working out to just over $54,000 every week. The Farming for Hospice scheme, which began in March 1994, aims to raise at least 10 per cent of the hospice’s annual fundraising budget. Over the past 24 years, the scheme has raised more than $2.5 million for Arohanui Hospice. A network of close to 400 farmers graze hospice cattle amongst their own herds, and the programme has between 350 to 400 cattle on its books at any one time. Stock may be on-farm for between eight to 18 months. When the cattle reach their optimum weight they are sent for processing with proceeds directly to Arohanui Hospice. Stock transport is either donated or significantly discounted. Simon is keen to explore new ways to spread the scheme and to increase the type of farmers who may want to contribute by including bulls and deer, or donations of sheep.

From left: Farming for Hospice volunteer convenor Simon McKay with volunteer coordinator and cattle buyer John McLean

“We are keen to hear from anyone happy to look after a small area of graziers with 10 to 20 cattle under their control,” said Simon. The Farming for Hospice team is always on the look-out for new farmers who are willing to come on board as graziers. “We are very much in need of farmers in Rangitikei, Manawatu, Tararua and Horowhenua districts,” said Simon. There are currently 20 coordinators with about 20 cattle each shared among their farmer graziers. Coordinators keep the convenor informed when to sell and buy, and how the cattle are doing. Simon is thoroughly enjoying his work as a volunteer convenor. The role keeps him in contact with many of the families and associates in the rural community.

“We can only ask that people consider supporting the hospice in some form. “Everyone throughout our districts is fundraising for different organisations, so we have to be mindful of that.” Simon said the Farming for Hospice scheme had operated successfully for many years. “It is my responsibility to help, along with all the coordinators and graziers, to ensure the scheme continues into the future.” Anyone interested in helping or becoming involved with Farming for Hospice can call Simon on 021 423 532. Alternatively, email fundraising@ arohanuihospice.org.nz or phone 06 350 2312 for contact details of your local Farming for Hospice coordinator.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER GENERATES INDUSTRY IDEAS By Denise Gunn Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture scholarship winner for the western North Island has a background immersed in agriculture. Monique Yule is one of six inspirational young people from around New Zealand to receive one of these scholarships this year.

R

aised on her family’s sheep and beef farm in Elsthorpe in central Hawke’s Bay, Monique’s passion for agriculture stemmed from a young age. “Being brought up on a family-run farm, I was highly involved in farming operations from a very young age, which I thoroughly enjoyed.” Monique is currently studying at Massey University towards a bachelor of food technology with honours, majoring in food product development. “My desire to study food technology

came about as I only had strong interests for agriculture and food science. “This led me to the idea of working with food directly related to agriculture, either in the meat, dairy or horticulture sectors, and allowing me to combine my passion for both fields.” A family friend saw the Plate to Pasture scholarship advertised and mentioned it to Monique. Growing up on a red meat farm, the Silver Ferns Farm brand was a common household label. The scholarship appealed to Monique as she has a strong desire to work

Monique was raised on her family’s farm in central Hawke’s Bay within the meat sector after graduation, combining her passion for food and the agricultural sector. Each scholarship winner received $5,000 to further their careers in the red meat sector. “The financial aid was a huge contributor as the scholarship would allow me to focus solely on my studies, without needing to find a part-time job to financially assist me.” “Alongside the financial aid, I also felt that the opportunity would be a great way to hear experiences from

people who have entered this field, and expand my knowledge within the red meat sector.” Silver Fern Farms chief executive, Simon Limmer, said he is delighted to see the passion young New Zealanders have shown for the red meat industry through the applications submitted to the annual scholarship programme. “We want to thank all applicants for entering the Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships, the calibre of the entries was high and showed great initiative and insights into our industry, at all

levels. Through the scholarships, we have connected with the industry’s emerging talent who want to contribute to a sustainable future for our red meat sector — from plate to pasture.” This year, applicants were asked to describe their ‘Big Idea’ for the red meat industry, as well as naming three challenges or opportunities they believe are important to the sector. Monique’s big idea for the red meat industry is to better accommodate highincome earners over a wide variety of niche markets. It would increase the consumer base of the red meat industry and add extra value to current red meat products. “Niche markets, which I believe can be better targeted by the red meat industry include toddlers, the elderly and busy workers. “I feel that the elderly and toddler niche could be better targeted by the red meat industry, as they make up a large portion of the global population. Currently, there are no meat products on the market which specifically target them.” She also suggested the needs of toddlers and the elderly could be met by producing fortified, convenient, pre-cut and easy to chew red meat products.” Monique found out she was a successful scholarship recipient through a phone call from the Silver Ferns Farms senior communications adviser. “The news was very exciting as I never thought my application would be one of the six successful applications.” All successful recipients were invited to

The Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture scholarship will help Monique further her career attend the Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture conference in Rotorua. “The experience I gained through the conference was very eye-opening and insightful. “It gave me a great understanding of all areas of the supply chain required to get a product of high quality from the primary sector, right through to consumers globally.” After graduating, Monique would like to experience how the food industry operates in different areas of the globe. From a young age Monique has been involved in day-to-day farming operations

“I would love to travel overseas to Asia and South America to experience different food cultures, and analyse how various food cultures could be integrated into the western diet.” Long-term Monique would like to be involved in enhancing food products within the agricultural sector, to meet consumers’ wants and needs. “I have very passionate views for creating innovative food products, which

are beneficial to consumers by being of high nutritional value and quality. Monique said working in direct relation to agriculturally-produced foods would combine her passion for agriculture and food science. “It would also allow me to work with wholesome, nutritious foods to produce products which are beneficial for consumers both in New Zealand and globally.”

When trees take over by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

The current government is full of surprises — and they are expensive and worrying surprises. I am all for regional development but the minister responsible for this portfolio, claiming to have miraculously increased the regional population of this country in twelve months just a week ago, is hell-bent on planting trees. On close inspection, I notice that the Rangitikei Electorate is earmarked for a swag of trees to be planted. In a few short years under this scenario, instead of many sheep and people dotted around our hill country, we will have a whole lot of trees, few sheep and the people will have left the region. Here’s a prime example of policy, which if implemented without thought to the outcomes, could have a dramatic impact on the people of rural New Zealand. The Rangitikei is currently the biggest sheep breeding electorate in New Zealand (Southland used to have that honour). Let’s look closely at the implications here, especially in light of the changes in the Overseas Investment Act. An overseas ‘investor’ could arrive and purchase, say, a 2,000-hectare station,

because of the terms of the act and despite the fact that the soil could well be capable of growing crops or sheep or beef production they will plant trees across all classes of the land. It is not appropriate for productive and sustainable sheep and beef country to be swallowed up like this. It is no accident that the Horizons Sustainable Land Use Initiative is such a success. It began after heavy rainfall during three days in February 2004 and worked on the important relationship between soil conservation, sustainable land use and improved water quality. It was a truly ‘mountains to the sea’ approach to wise land use. Horizons led a collaborative approach between MPI, Farmers and Ag Research on a farm by farm approach implementing environmental farm plans and producing some very good outcomes. A thinking government would plan ahead so that diverse and appropriate land use would take place; rural communities would remain intact and real sustainable regional development would go ahead.

Chondroitin: Forgotten hero If you use a joint supplement for osteoarthritis, then stop reading and get the bottle and check the amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS) in the daily dose. Most older-style formulas will have up to 20% CS in the formula typically about 200mg in a daily dose. Chondroitin is a structural component of cartilage adding strength and resistance to compression. The study that changed it all for me was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (Wildi et al, 2011) the study title is: Chondroitin sulphate reduces both cartilage volume loss and bone marrow lesions in knee osteoarthritis patients starting as early as six months after initiation of therapy: a randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study using MRI. Eighty people with similar grades of knee OA were chosen. Half the participants were given 800mg of CS as 400mg twice daily for six months. The other group was given a placebo. The two groups were then compared after six months. The group using CS had much less cartilage loss. The next phase then gave all the participants 800mg of CS for another six months. The same results occurred. Those that had been on the placebo showed a reduction in cartilage loss

while the group that had continued with CS now for 12 months continued with much less cartilage loss. As a consequence, I reformulated my joint support formula and lifted CS to the levels used in the study. I also added a potent anti-inflammatory 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Even joints that show signs of degeneration can improve. As an example one man I have been helping noticed significant improvements in mobility and comfort after only a few months and is now even able to ski again. If you have holiday plans it is a priority to ensure any animals, including fish and birds in your care, are well looked after. Pets dislike being left behind whilst their ‘family’ go on adventures but at times there is no option, particularly if there is no ‘pet-friendly’ accommodation available. Most areas have boarding kennels for cats and dogs, and they take care of all your pets’ needs. Another option is getting a house and pet sitter to come into your home and check on your animals, or stay on-site and keep your animal and feathered friends company. It also means your property is not left empty. If this is the solution for you, make sure you have enough food supplies and a list of meal times and sizes, the name of your veterinarian and an emergency contact number for yourself, a friend or family member who is available if needed. If your pet is on medications, ensure you have sufficient supply and leave clear instructions on administering

DELIVERY • INSTALLATION • SERVICE

them. Make sure the carer knows to leave fresh water out daily and explain routines, special beds or treats so your pet has things as normal as possible — whether they are a cat, dog, rabbit or alpaca. When taking your pet with you plan ahead and check they are welcome and remember to enquire about restrictions at campsites, parks and beaches. The safest way for a dog or cat to travel is in a pet crate that has been securely anchored or a properly fitted harness that is securely attached to the vehicle as directed by the manufacturer. Partially covering the crate can help relax the animal and they should be kept in the back seat to prevent injury if an airbag deploys. Animals that get motion sickness or anxious can be

given medications to help relax. Stop frequently during longer trips to allow your pet to exercise and go to the toilet and never leave an animal locked inside a car as the temperatures rise to high levels and can lead to death. Remember, even animals can enjoy time away with their loved ones, exploring the countryside and those left at home need quality of care as they await your return.

The Wellington 500 is ‘back’ Well, kind of. From December 15 to January 13, Wellington Museum is celebrating the famed race through a display that includes a purpose-built remote control car track. From 1985 to 1996, the Nissan Mobil 500 (nicknamed the ‘Wellington 500’) transformed Wellington’s waterfront into an internationally-regarded racing destination, watched on television by 164 million globally. The 50,000 who attended in-person saw top drivers take their high performance touring cars to the limit, driving at speeds of over 200km/h through the narrow streets of Wellington. To the dismay of some Aucklanders, who were green with envy after failing to secure the race up north, the Wellington waterfront proved to be the perfect spot as it was close to bars and shops. Plus, it was virtually empty. Not that all retailers enjoyed the noise and closed streets during the race, especially the retailer that ended up with a tyre crashing through their shop window after coming off one of the cars. For a time, the race began and ended at the Wellington Museum building, the historic bond store where ships would

Experience and flair in engineering For more than 45 years Roadrunner Manufacturing has been supplying custom aluminium equipment to the transport, marine and agricultural industries from our workshop on SH1 in Bulls.

The name may have changed once or twice, but over the years Roadrunner has become a well-recognised and respected business both in New Zealand and offshore. While we have been predominantly supplying the trucking industry with diesel tanks, hydraulic oil tanks, and toolboxes; our product range has recently grown to include custom-built ute boxes, dog cages and ute-mounted on-site refuelling tanks for the farming and contracting sectors. Roadrunner Manufacturing has been the exclusive supplier of OMAX and MAXIEM waterjets for 10 years, and we have currently more than 50 machines installed throughout the country. OMAX is a US-based company and is one of the largest producers of precision abrasive waterjet machines, which means we can supply leading technology within the waterjet sector directly to you. Our factory-trained waterjet technicians can also provide superior after-sales support and service to our clients. Whether you need our help with a custom project or something from our

large range of predesigned products, our goal is always to help you get a product that meets your needs perfectly. With more than four decades of experience, we understand the industries our clients work in, and we pride ourselves on our ability to come up with smart solutions for New Zealand conditions. As custom engineering and manufacturing specialists, we can help you bring your ideas to life. If you have a project in mind, we would love to talk more about how we can help. Bring your concepts and ideas to us, and our engineers will give you practical advice on turning a concept into reality. You may find that we have already built exactly what you are looking for. “Roadrunner is a very professional company that we really enjoy working with. We like the technical expertise and your commitment to quality, on-time delivery and customer service. They take a very methodical approach to manufacturing our products and delivers top-notch solutions that meet or exceed our expectations.” Graeme Wyle, Bigfoot Equipment Ltd.

The mystery of irrigation systems Many farmers and lifestylers make life hard for themselves by not understanding the requirements of an effective irrigation system, be it water or effluent. Following are some points to consider: 1. Decide how far this system may finally go. So often this is understated which makes adding on later difficult if the pipe is already too restrictive. It is generally better to have over-large pipes than to be too small. You will save in pump energy anyway. 2. Pressure loss is linear by distance. The further you go the more pressure you lose in a proportional sense, ie 500m of pipe has twice pressure loss of 250m of the same pipe at same flow. 3. Understand the hose/pipe size being offered by the salesman. MDOD means Medium Density 0utside Dimension. Actual internal size will be at least 10mm–15mm smaller. Pressure loss is significantly greater. 4. Assuming flow is undiminished and correct size is selected, maintain pipe size to far end of the system. Some clot keeps repeating a myth in the market that you need to reduce pipe size the further you get from the pump. Try this with a milkshake

sometime! Make the straw longer and smaller — it doesn’t work! 5. The height of undulations, hills, etc, has a direct pressure loss on the liquid but fortunately is easy to calculate as follows: vertical height in meters of the object is equal (close enough) to the pressure loss of liquid in metres. So a hill 30m high vertically will have roughly 30mH pressure loss which needs to be allowed for in the equation. 6. Having arrived at the furthest irrigated paddock, don’t strangle the machine by having too small a supply hose. 7. Know what pressure is required to run the irrigator. Don’t just let it have whatever is left. 8. So, now knowing what total pressure is required for the system (and flow) you can select the correct pump for the job. Do this right. A bargain is not that if it costs more to run through being too large or too small. Irri-Max Ltd has a free basic consultation for your irrigation system call 0800 426 296.

Mark was giving a friend a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine, the day was terrible and wet, and it didn’t work — you spent all your time unblocking it. Mark thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t. He asked himself a few questions and came up with a hydraulic driven rotary hoe system that can grind off the hardest of deposits. It is driven in up the pile line where it digs and once full is hauled out. Every time we trialled it we saw 10 things wrong but one thing that worked so we kept pushing ahead.

The Clean Sweep machine was developed. It is versatile and can work on wet ground whereas a sucking machine clogs. Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons. By using the Clean Sweep machine, you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20–30 metres. They assess every job prior for quoting. Clean Sweep Woolsheds is making the job simple for farmers, and they don’t have to handle it themselves also the

end product is the great fertiliser that the client keeps. Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it onto their paddocks. It is important to have a clean shed — it creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight; it also decreases wool staining and most of all it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate. Clean Sweep Woolsheds also clean the count out pens. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well.

Return of the king by Andy Bryenton

Prior to 2011, the image in most people’s minds of a best-selling Ford ute was one in line with our automotive history down under — you’d likely picture a V8 powered, low-slung muscle machine like those produced by tuning house FPV. All that changed when 2011’s Ford Ranger came on the scene. In retrospect, it was a turning point for the brand in New Zealand — a milestone pointing to an era of dominance. Now it’s come time to follow-up the ongoing legacy of what has become not just our nation’s favourite utility vehicle, but our top vehicle overall for three years running. Ford is well aware that the only way to go onwards is to go upwards, and so their 2019 Ranger debuts with a smooth new transmission, a new power options and a new, revised look to deliver more presence on the road. New under the hood is the option of a two-litre, twin-turbocharged common rail diesel engine, developing a phenomenal 500Nm of torque for heavy hauling duties and to power the Ranger through rough terrain. With more than 210 horsepower, this compact but mighty engine compares favourably to the established and reliable Duratorq 3.2 litre diesel which remains an option in the new line-up. With the two-litre twin turbo mated to a seriously smooth tenspeed automatic transmission, the ample power on tap delivers a fresh helping of the car-like ride and road

manners which made the original Ranger a hit. Even with the familiar Duratorq, the ride seems lighter, more nimble and more accomplished. Other additions are purely futuristic — tech such as road sign recognition, which displays appropriate road signage in the ute’s display. You’ll also be able to choose automatic parking assist, which is pure magic when witnessed operating on a vehicle of this size. As is to be expected, much of Ford’s wizardry works behind the scenes in the name of safety and comfort, but their new Sync 3 infotainment system is front and centre in a well-appointed cab, putting everything at your fingertips. While Ford has not rewritten the rulebook on the way the Ranger looks for 2019, it’s a clear update on the style front, with a slightly more aggressive look to complement those extra abilities. Here in the heartland of Ford Ranger country — the Kaipara boasts a predominance of the big ute with

the blue oval badge — it all adds up to a generational change worth waiting for. More options, more power, more

The Feilding Ford team “We know Feilding, we know local and we know rural,” says Courtesy Ford’s Shawn Retter, who 12 months ago picked up the branch manager’s role after 11 years based in the Palmerston North dealership. The first thing he did was move the culture from a ‘boss-employee’ scenario to a team environment. “We consider ourselves a team, no different to a sports team — sure everyone has their role in our dealership, but one thing that sets us apart from others is that we all muck in, no matter what the job, and cover each other, and we think that is pretty unique.” Courtesy Ford Feilding has been around for a very long time and is definitely part of Feilding’s furniture. They pride themselves on knowing the local and rural markets inside and out with a specialised team covering all facets of a modern dealership, from sales, finance, service and parts. The sales team know just how to fit the right vehicle to the right buyer, and with tailored finance, warranty, and leasing options available, there is no better time

Their state of the art service department, led by foreman Steve, uses the latest in diagnostic equipment, to ensure that your vehicle is performing as it should. “We all know that cars have evolved considerably from the trusty Mk1

Cortina and Zephyr, so Courtesy Ford is the best point of call for all your WOF’s and servicing needs, big or small.” Sierra and Mitch complete the service department, and all three technicians will treat your car as if it was their own. Feel free to give service adviser Lyn a call if there is anything you require. There is also an on-site parts department, and the ability to source non-stocked parts from Ford overnight if required. “So, if there is anything you require, a new or used car, a super competitive finance package, repairs to your pride and joy, or even parts or accessories, come and see me and the team. We’ll show you just how enjoyable a visit to a Ford dealer can be.”

A swift, silent farm ride

Cost saving and margins are always at the forefront in business — across all sectors, the UBCO Electric Utility Bike is experiencing a significant upswing in sales. The reasons are varied — but at the dollars end, UBCOs make sense. UBCOs are unbeatable as a runabout; they are incredibly cheap to run at around $1 for a 100km range. Their service costs are on average at least 50% less than regular two-wheelers. On top of this, farm managers who have done time and motion studies found that staff were often using fourwheelers and side-by-sides for tasks way under their design purposes such as the many trips down to the shed and back, bringing the stock up to the shed, checking fence lines and so on. In response, farm managers insisted staff use their UBCOs for these menial tasks, resulting in significant reductions in the wear and tear of their four-wheelers — which in turn meant significant drops in the running cost of these units both in fuel and ongoing expensive repairs meaning more dollars saved. UBCOs are not a magic wand that can do everything. However, they are a very capable, practical and rugged lightweight, low-cost machine that is very quickly cementing its real value and place amidst our machinery fleets. Then there is the pleasure of simplicity and silence. UBCOs have hardly any running gear and engine braking to pull

An award-winning combination When good things come together, the whole is made greater than the sum of its parts. Nothing falls short of this statement when we look at what’s been happening with the local farm bike scene, where we caught up with City Honda and Bisset Honda to look back at what’s been achieved since they brought three stores together as one. In February 2017, Pahiatua’s Bevan Bisset and Ingrid de Graaf connected with Shannon’s Scott and Rachel Newton to acquire and run City Honda Manawatu. While Bisset Honda and City Honda Manawatu have remained in the same great locations, the Horowhenua

branch has moved from Shannon to its new location in Levin. Together, they now see three stores working together: Bisset Honda (Pahiatua), City Honda Manawatu (Palmerston North) and City Honda Horowhenua (Levin). Bringing the stores together has allowed three stores

that were once competing to join forces and work as a collaboration. “It has been an essential objective to get out and back our riding and farming communities”, co-owner Scott Newton told us. “It’s also really great to hear the positive feedback from farmers seeing us out more and more backing local events. We’ve had a lot of change over the last 20 months, but our support to those who support us has remained consistent.” Events and causes such as hunting competitions, Young Farmers, local schools, community bake-offs, local rides, up and coming riders and more have had the teams firing on all cylinders. Their

efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either, with Bisset Honda being recognised as Honda New Zealand’s ‘Best Community Involvement’ dealership and City Honda Manawatu as the ‘Best Customer Service’ Dealership. Bisset Honda was also awarded Southern Tararua Business Supreme Winner Award, a real credit to the work put in by the team. There is no doubt that there is an exciting and progressive atmosphere you sense when coming into one of the stores. An optimistic buzz is in the air, so it will be exciting to see what this team has for us in the future. Feel free to drop in for a coffee at one of their three locations.
