David Cade, also known as Didymo Dave, received the Minister for Primary Industries’ Biosecurity Award, which acknowledges an individual, group or organisation that has at least 10 years of continuous outstanding contribution to biosecurity in New Zealand. Horizons environmental coordinator Craig Davey said Didymo Dave has been employed by the council on a casual basis since 2013 to spread the Check, Clean, Dry message in the Central Plateau area. “Dave is a conservation hero and extremely passionate about protecting our waterways from pests for future generations,” said Mr Davey. “We have been fortunate to harness this passion and have him join us in engaging people from all walks of life in conservation conversations when he’s visited popular sites over summer. From riverside chats to events, you’ll know what you need to do to better protect our special places once Dave has encouraged you to make a difference.” Mr Davey said during the years Dave has come up with innovative ways to gain attention for the cause. “From a poem about the blue duck to talkback radio calls and alter egos Dame Didymo Davina and Victor the Viking, Dave’s use of all media platforms and memorable personalities to get cut-

through knows no bounds. His passion for katiakitanga is contagious, his care is genuine, and his ability to encourage behaviour change is effective. “There are only a handful of people that stand above the rest by not only walking the talk but impacting on others to make a difference. It’s fantastic that his efforts have been recognised with this award.” Didymo Dave was nominated for the award by Gillian Visser who owns Adventure Lodge and Motel at Tongariro National Park. Ms Visser said she got to know Didymo Dave as he tirelessly talked to guests in the kitchen. “Dave is always spreading the word, to all the tourists who stop here, about biosecurity in New Zealand, often going as far as scrubbing their boots for them before they leave. He is constantly working and goes above and beyond with his efforts,” she said. “My daughter heard about the awards and suggested I nominate him. It took a bit of work to pull together all the information and references, but I kept thinking on those late nights that this will all be worth it. Someone like this deserves an award big time.” Mr Davey said Didymo Dave will be out and about again this summer on behalf of Horizons and has no doubt that he will continue to make an impact.

Manawatu teenager Ritson Galloway has won the World Junior Duck-calling Champion title, becoming the first non-American to do so. The 16-year-old, accompanied by his father Andy and supporter Warren Smith, travelled to the World Waterfowl Calling Competition, held in the United States, in November. Ritson entered duck-calling and goosecalling sections at the competition, in both the junior and open sections. The junior sections are restricted to competitors under 17 years of age. Along with his World Junior Duckcalling Champion title, he also placed sixth in the open section against older, more experienced competitors and progressed to the second round in the goose-calling category. “I was stoked with that,” said Ritson. He found competitors and organisers helpful and encouraging throughout the event. “Everyone was so nice.” Since its foundation in the 1970s, competitors from across the globe have travelled to the small town of Easton in Maryland to compete in the annual event. Ritson began duck calling when he was three years old and entered his first competition, held in Palmerston North when he was 10. “I struggled for the first couple of years due to being young,” said Ritson.

“Then a couple of years later I entered the same competition and won three years in a row, age 12, 13 and 14.” His first attempt at the New Zealand championships followed, placing fifth. However, in 2018, Ritson scooped up wins in four categories at the New Zealand Duck and Goose Calling Championships in Taupo. This year he was the successful defending champion, winning the national title for the second time. Ritson puts in hours of practice, often daily. “It’s more of a build-up thing and I’ve practised over four or five years to get to that level. It depends how much effort, practice and passion you put in.” Manawatu teenager Ritson Galloway won the 2019 The Galloway family has a World Junior Duck-calling Championship title long-standing tradition of duck shooting and hunting. SAFETY

TOP PRIORITY BY DENISE GUNN JUNIOR RURAL SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR, BRADLEY MCDOWELL, BEGAN COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING AT THE AGE OF 12 AND UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY WHEN HANDLING FIREARMS.

B

radley’s introduction to the sport began when a close family friend, Ross Clark, invited him and his father Shaun out to a rifle range. “When Bradley had his first go of the shotgun, he was so well-balanced, and Ross told him he was a natural,” said Shaun. “Ross saw potential in him so went about teaching him all he could about all aspects of the sport, and most importantly, safety.” Six months later Shaun took Bradley to his first major competition. “Bradley did very well. A lot of shooters said he could go all the way and might one day become a New Zealand champion.”

The sport of cowboy action shooting originated in California during the early 1980s, and the first world championships were held in 1987. Worldwide there are now between 100,000–200,000 cowboy action shooters from 18 countries. Pistols, lever-action rifles and sideby-side shotguns, all based on late 1800s designs, are used during the competitions. Each contestant is required to shoot a series of steel targets in a predetermined, memorised procedure with three different types of guns; pistols, shotguns and rifles — an event called a course of fire.

The aim is to complete a series of targets as fast as possible. Competitors must wear old western style clothing and use an alias. Bradley competes under the alias ‘Kiwi Rooster’. Five years ago he won the New Zealand Junior Champion Cowboy Action Shooting title and held it for the next three years. In 2016 he competed in the world championship in New Mexico finishing seventh in his category. Back in New Zealand, Bradley progressed up the ranks. In 2017 he achieved his goal of becoming New Zealand’s best shooter at the national championships at his home club of Wanganui. While travelling to another competition, Bradley learned that his friend, Ross Clark, had suddenly passed away. Shaun says the event hardened Bradley’s determination to win a world title to recognise his mentor. A few months later he travelled back to the USA with a large Kiwi contingent to shoot at a few stateside matches before going on to the world championships. He won his category at all of those matches also winning the Wyoming State Championships junior title, before travelling on to the main event, which saw him announced as the

Junior World Champion and seventh overall in the total rankings. At just 16 years of age, Bradley is New Zealand’s youngest world title holder for the sport. Bradley’s achievements were recognised earlier this year when he won the Fonterra Young New Zealand Sportsperson of the Year award. His win was announced during the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards gala dinner, held on the eve of the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games. The shooting at the Christchurch mosques deeply affected Bradley and his family. “Our thoughts are for the families of the victims,” said Shaun. “As a sporting organisation, we absolutely condemn all unlawful use of firearms. We regard our opportunity to use firearms in our sport as a privilege, not a right.” Bradley is currently the North Island overall men’s champion and the New Zealand overall men’s champion for cowboy action shooting. His goal is to become the overall men’s world title holder and plans to return to compete in the USA next year. He is also keen to see more young people and families take up the sport in New Zealand, for both the gun safety and fun aspect. “Get along to your local pistol club or contact Pistol New Zealand to find out more,” said Shaun.

Since taking up the sport of cowboy action shooting, Bradley has won numerous titles DON’T JUST BLOW HOT AIR AROUND…

IMPROVING FARMER

WELLBEING by Denise Gunn The award-winning Fit 4 Farming Trust is committed to improving rural health, with a vision for New Zealand to be the fittest, healthiest farming nation in the world.

F

ounder and former farmer, Ian Handcock, knows firsthand the benefits of physical fitness and the link to mental wellbeing. With a background of working in both the building and dairy farming industries, Ian is also a keen marathon runner, endurance cyclist and rugby coach. He has incorporated his skills and knowledge to shape the Fit 4 Farming Trust. The trust’s initial concept was developed when Ian attended the 2014 Kellogg’s rural leaders programme.

“I remembered when I went from building to farming, I found dairy farming physically less demanding,” said Ian. “Suspecting there was a drop-off in the physical health of farmers due to the changing nature of farming, I did my project on farmer fitness. I have always had an interest in how some people seem to be happier or others that achieve more.” Now working as a farm consultant, Ian is keen to help farmers improve their physical fitness levels and reach their goals.

“I played ruby, then coached rugby right up until 2014. I always felt the fitter I was, the happier I was. I achieved more, enjoyed sport and life more and accomplished more in a year. I used the same philosophy when coaching sport and coached three unbeaten rugby teams in the Thames Valley. I also love strategy, and use techniques learnt through rugby to help coach farmers now.” Four years ago, Ian took up running, with two 100km ultra-marathons as well as numerous shorter distances now under his belt. He has also completed the 400km K2 one-day cycle challenge in Coromandel and biked twice around Lake Taupo. The Fit 4 Farming’s 1,400km cycle tour of rural New Zealand in 2016 aimed to raise awareness of the link between farmers physical fitness and mental wellbeing. “We promote balancing work with an active lifestyle to improve health and happiness,” said Ian. “The Fit 4 Farming’s logo portrays the workboot and the running shoe representing the balance between work and recreation. The name embodies personal wellbeing and the ability to perform your job to the best of your capability.” “In 2017, I organised the 12-hour milking world record where one man milked over 5,000 cows. It promoted good nutrition and preparing physically for peak season.” Ian is currently arranging a baton relay through rural New Zealand to illustrate how people disconnect from their work to connect with others. The trust has expanded to include coaching farmers and wellbeing workshops too. “The ultimate outcome would be to have farmers fit and healthy enough to manage the stresses of modernday farming. “I will add it is not just farmers who are feeling the stress. We all have times when we feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to rationalise our thoughts.” Ian said active people have a positive attitude to life, confidence in decisionmaking, better time management, create positive cultures and contribute to their communities.

DRIVE PHONE FREE!

Through Fit 4 Farming, Ian promotes the importance of balancing work with an active lifestyle They have a better metabolism, lower blood pressure, and can manage their weight better, which equates to better health. They will potentially suffer fewer injuries, have less burnout and will stay in the industry for longer. “Being able to step away from your farm with a recreation activity allows you to organise your mind and free some of the clutter from living in the job 24/7. No one can operate at 100 per cent all the time without a mental break. Physical activity allows this to happen. The other important fact is the socialisation that sports give you.” Ian is in the process of taking Fit 4 Farming completely under his wing and winding up the trust. “I want to continue doing events that get rural people out there and active to improve their health.” Fit 4 Farming workshops will be advertised on the organisation’s Facebook page. “The only way to really improve physical fitness is to be active. However, I can structure a specific workshop to cater for organisations that are serious about improving wellbeing. My take on life is we can do much more than we think. We just need to

believe it and have support that believes in you too,” said Ian.

DRIVING THE WILL TO LIVE BY DENISE GUNN Charitable foundation Will to Live’s founder, Elle Perriam, is on a mission to improve mental health awareness and wellbeing in young rural people.

S

ince the launch of Will to Live last year during the Hunterville Huntaway Festival, Elle has held a number of Speak Up events in rural communities throughout New Zealand. Elle’s motivation for establishing the foundation came from a personal loss when her late boyfriend, Will, took his own life two years ago. Will worked as a shepherd in North Otago. “I didn’t want any family to go through the suffering we had to go through,” said Elle. “I didn’t know of any support services for young rural working people, who are generally isolated and living in valleys, who do not have any access to help and

services. Even when they do reach out for mental health support, the waitlists are ridiculous.” Elle decided to create and crowdfund a nationwide Speak Up tour, which included 16 mental health events in 16 rural and isolated places throughout New Zealand. The aim of each event was to educate, inspire and provide support, taking a holistic and natural approach to physical and mental health. “We decided to go into their local towns and host our events at their local taverns and pubs, where it was a safe, comfortable and already well-known environment to them.”

Will’s favourite black huntaway, Jess, is now cared for by Elle. Jess has become a symbolic mascot for Will to Live on the Speak Up tour. The local rural community were encouraged to bring their farm dogs to the events, which began with a Speak up with Jess to break a moment’s silence. “The huntaway’s bark symbolises the power of the ripple effect that happens when people speak up about their mental health issues and inflict positive change.” Speak Up events hosted a variety of guest speakers including local farmers, health professionals and the Rural Support Trust. A charity auction, dinner and entertainment followed on from the speakers. Elle said the feedback received reflected on her aim for the events to be casual, informative, relatable, positive and humorous. “We are super happy to get this sort of feedback as a casual positive approach to the subject is the right way to introduce mental health education and awareness into rural communities. We are not lecturing them. We are farmers relating to other farmers, encouraging and giving confidence for them to speak up also. This is the approach we need to take with farmers and a simple and effective way to start the conversation.” Elle was raised on a small cattle farm in Haast, South Westland. “It’s one of the most isolated places you

could get,” she said. “I loved growing up on the coast, and the opportunity of working with horses and cattle from a small age has influenced my passion for the industry. I have developed a strong interest and passion working with stud animals.” During the past two years, Elle has worked at Mt Guardian Perendale Stud, Te Mania Angus and in Australia. She splits her time between the two studs. “However, Will To Live has taken over a lot of my time recently, and I want to put in 110% to make sure it is a continuing thing, and all the money donated to us goes to the best place possible.” During the organisation and planning of all the events, Elle kept in mind how important community is in rural areas. Keen local farmers, Young Farmers clubs and Rural Support Trusts were contacted to help run the events and organise a local speaker in their area. These groups and individuals also collected auction items with contacts in their communities. The Speak Up tour was an opportunity to raise funds for the continuation of Will to Live’s travelling education tours into 2020. There are plans to host workshopstyle tours focussing on educating farm managers and owners on the importance of recognising staff wellbeing. Specific training will cover leadership, resilience, mental and physical wellness as well as nutrition.

My motorcycle tour in India in a few years ago was a feast for my senses including, of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. I have many clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. One client had a troublesome Baker’s cyst behind his knee. Taking my Curcumin product has greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. A study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis (Henrotin, 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded, “curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.” The study outlines the impact of curcumin on anti-inflammatory pathways, including inhibiting

inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This is the target of most anti-inflammatory drugs, and while effective, these come with a range of often side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal daily dose of two capsules daily gives 1,000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Contact me for an email copy of my Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. RTB Agriculture Ltd Ryan and Tracey Badger own RTB Agriculture Ltd alongside Ryan’s parents Wilton and Janice providing agricultural services from cultivation to hay, baleage and bulk silage. “I left school and pursued a trade as an engineer but having grown up on a farm and with my father being an ag contractor in my younger years, I have always been drawn to the industry,” says Ryan. “Running our own business helps us provide a top-quality job with the aim to do our best for every client. One of our core values is if things don’t go to plan we endeavour to put our mistakes right — so we don’t leave clients disappointed. “Grass harvesting is achieved fast and efficiently as we have the ability to send two sets of triple mower conditioners along with two baler/wrappers or our Claas 950 forage harvester. All of our stacks are built with a JCB loader with a four-metre folding buckrake giving us the ability to move and distribute the silage quickly and spend the remaining time between loads rolling the stack.” The company also offers spraying out, full cultivation or direct drilling and a follow-up with weed spraying throughout the season to get the optimum crop growth. “Full cultivation can cover ploughing or discing, levelling, power harrowing and sowing. Direct drilling is done using disc drills, leaving very low soil disturbance. We can sow small or large seeds as well as apply slug bait. A lot of our machines are GPS auto steer for greater drilling and cultivation accuracy saving us time and the client seed as we keep overlaps and overruns to a minimum. “In the winter months, we are kept busy with various engineering jobs. We also have

a truck and tractor and trailer along with a 13-tonne digger for maintaining farm tracks and drains, etc. “Our biggest assets are our team and clients — without them, we wouldn’t have a viable business. The machines are just the tool we use to complete the job. We do our best to look after all concerned and try to provide an environment that everyone to enjoy working in.” For enquiries phone 027 445 1997.

The day the farmers came to town

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES November 2019

New chairwoman for SI Agricultural Field Days

by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

by Denise Gunn

Recently I marched along Wellington’s Lambton Quay with farmers on their way to make a point at parliament.

Planning is underway for the 2021 South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) with a new organising committee chairwoman in the seat.

I’m personally not a great person for taking part in protests so probably a first for me. It really was a privilege to march alongside so many people who are so passionate about New Zealand and so concerned about what’s going on in rural New Zealand. The protest was orderly and wellmanaged and made a point — sending a very strong message to the government. The issue that we have with trees really relates to covering off highly productive farmland with trees. It has nothing to do with the need to plant trees. I think everyone agrees we need to plant trees — we just need the right tree in the right place. There were some very clever and amusing placards, which people were carrying that day and they gave a good commentary in support of the main message: “Try milking a pine tree”, “Milk cows, not farmers”, “Pine trees starve bees”, were among the ones I saw. The reaction of the public along the way was positive and supportive.

I congratulate 50 Shades of Green on an effective protest about the productive farmland that we rely on to support our rural communities. It was a credit to 50 Shades of Green in rallying the support and bringing the farmers to the capital and to the farmers themselves and their families and rural support businesses who took the time out to tell the government that the policy settings on this issue are wrong and that they must be changed.

Michaela McLeod has taken over the reins from former committee chairman Rodney Hadfield. Rodney said being part of the organising committee is a great team effort, with a mix of young and experienced members. “You get to meet different people and companies you wouldn’t otherwise deal with.” Michaela and her husband, Ben, are based at Darfield and operate a business together running independent agricultural research trials. The couple has two children, Joe, three, and Harriet, eight months. Michaela holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours). Every two years the SIAFD provides a three-day agricultural showcase, including the latest in technological innovations. Land and crops are also made available for working demonstrations of broadacre farm machinery.

11

The field days, held at Kirwee in central Canterbury, attract a crowd of close to 30,000. Michaela now heads the SIAFD organising team of about 25 volunteers. She said the organising committee already has a successful formula to build on and a great permanent site at Kirwee. “It’s been a huge challenge taking on the role of chair.” Committee members come from a range of agricultural backgrounds and include farmers, farmworkers, industry professionals and contractors. SIAFD offers professional development for its organising committee members, enabling them to take on roles and business skills that they may not encounter in their day jobs. “We are a group of people that work hard individually in our own jobs, then come together to work hard for the field days and have a good time doing it,” said Michaela.

Time for summer projects

100

by Bryce Robb, Director and Head Arborist at Beaver Tree Service

Summer is around the corner, time to get out and about, enjoy barbecues with friends and tackle those summertime projects in the garden. The landscaping to-do list during this time of year is always spilling over to the next page.

IT’S NOT A TARGET

For us as arborists, we are coming into our busy season. As people come out into their garden, they start to notice that their trees need some attention to enhance their outdoor space. As arborists, we are trained to have a good eye for the shape of trees and how they fit in your garden space. Most of the time, all trees need is a slight piece of judicious pruning to keep them in balance, and in line with the size of your property or the space in which the tree grows. Quite often trees are planted way too close to each other without the thought of how large they will get and that they will have to compete for sunlight, etc.

Avoid Drink Driving be THe SOBER D For A NIGHT

That is where we can advise you so that you get the best result. Summer pruning reduces tree size and vigour. When you remove branches with leaves, you shut down energy production, as there are fewer leaves to make energy through photosynthesis. It decreases the new growth and the energy available to be stored in the roots. In turn, this reduces the available energy for growth in the following season. Being out and about recently, I have noticed a lot of trees with dead branches or ‘hangers’ caught in the tops of trees. As with many pendulous trees, occasionally a branch dies for no apparent reason. Summer is a good time to prune out dead wood, as you can see clearly what needs to go. Beaver Tree Service offers free tree appraisals and can be contacted on 0800 423 283.

Spring is here

ow that spring has sprung it is important to know how to care for your trees, which, like all plants, require care and attention to reach their full potential. Spring is when all the flowering trees are out, and some people consider their gardens to look their best, with the garden bulbs complimenting the trees. This is the time where people come out of hibernation and start to venture back into their gardens, especially with daylight savings around the corner. As arborists, we are coming into our busiest season. Avid gardeners are coming outside in droves and start to notice that their trees need attention. Tidying your garden for summer starts with dealing with your trees. For example, you might be wanting to plant out a border with perennials or annuals, however the trees are blocking all the light from this area. Other scenarios are that a certain tree is getting far too large for the confined space that it is in, or maybe a tree is in major decline so needs to be removed. As an arborist and previously a landscape gardener, I love the challenge when dealing with my gardening clients to come up with a resolution in regards to tree removal, thinning, lifting or maybe pruning to allow for underplanting.

If you are looking to plant some flowering trees then now is a good time to do so before it gets too hot. This will allow the trees to establish and get their feet set firmly in the ground. Early spring is also a good time to transplant small trees or shrubs that may not be in the right spot in your yard. Some examples of trees with incredible flowers are deciduous magnolias, dogwoods and cherry trees to name a few. I recently went to Leaf Lands and was very impressed with the wide variety of trees they have. Leaf Lands is a family run wholesale tree nursery located on Napier Road in Palmerston North. I’m looking forward to planting my own garden out soon, and am looking to plant a grove of Betula utilis ‘Silver Shadow’ birch trees which have a stunning white bark on the trunk. I like to plant in groups of odd numbers, underplanting with small maples, rhododendron or even daffodils. If you want to kick your landscaping up to the next level, consulting a professional arborist is a great idea. Bryce Robb is Director/Head Arborist of Beaver Tree Service

Ready for the festive season

by Andy Bryenton

Kiwi farms follow a calendar dictated by Mother Nature, not Father Christmas. So most veteran farmers know all too well the big squeeze that can occur in late November and early December, but it’s worth taking a look at what those trades professionals say when it comes to getting advice about having a happier holiday. “We’re here to help anytime, but our suppliers might not be.” That is a call to come in and stock up soon while it’s still possible, on those things, which may break or wear out during the festive season. While many reputable plumbers, electricians, mechanics and machinery repair technicians carry lots of generic and common parts, obscure and offshore sourced pieces can be hard to obtain during the holidays. Part of this is shipping, and part is that other nations take different amounts of time off on different days than we do. Get in now to order replacement parts, and don’t leave an ‘iffy’ or ‘on the way out’ problem to blossom into a disaster when it’s tough to get suppliers on the phone.

“Big projects are best left until the fresh new year, not rushed.” It is a common answer from those in the trades, who often see demands for seasonal must-haves like air-con coming in at the last second. It’s often hard to tell a determined customer that they have missed the boat, but it’s a fine thing to be first on the books for the new year. If it can wait until January, why rush things before Christmas? Take it easy, and good summer weather will still be with us for your project’s groundbreaking in 2020. “Don’t be shy — call out if it’s a real emergency!” Those in the trades and professions know that it’s a 24/7 job out on the land. For the most part, businesses respect the fact that their rural callers are not in the habit of making frivolous demands on their time. Though they often say it with a wry smile, most tradespeople really

are happy to help their neighbours on Christmas and New Year or any time. If it’s going to impact your family or business, they want you to call, and they understand that it’s no one’s fault that the unexpected can happen on any day of the year.

Christmas Preparation ADVERTORIAL

Getting the right machinery The team at Central Mowers in Palmerston North bring to you a checklist for purchasing a ride-on lawnmower. There are so many options that many people are confused by the choices available. Step one: Take a good look at your section – is it flat or sloped? Does it have many gardens that you need to navigate, or do you have large open areas? If you have a lot of garden then you need to look at the space around those gardens to make sure that the mower you are purchasing will fit through the gaps. A zero-turn mower will enable you to mow around curved gardens without having to reverse back and forward like you will need to when using a more traditional lawn tractor. Step two: Set your budget – work out what you are happy to spend on the mower and then research to look for the best products and features that you can get for that amount of money. • Deck width – does it need to get through any narrow areas? Lawn tractors generally range from 33” up to 54” cut, with the most common sizing being 42”. • Side discharge vs mulching vs catching

– do you have somewhere you can easily dispose of the clippings? If not then the mulching option will leave a nice finish, although it will need to be mown more often than side discharge. • Pricing – these vary widely – if you are purchasing something that you want to last, look for reputable brands that you can easily source parts for and has good warranty periods and after sales service. If you need outdoor power equipment or repairs and servicing on your machinery – call in and say hi, or find us at www.centralmowers.co.nz.

Speed up your grass harvest Ph: 06 367 0557 levinglass@xtra.co.nz www.levinglassworks.co.nz 154 Oxford St, Levin. “Windows and Windscreen Repair Specialists”

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

With a working width of 13.3m and seven tines on each of 10 robust rotors, the 85140C trailed high-capacity tedder is ready for high output with the potential to raise productivity in another vital link of the efficiency chain. Whilst huge in size and strength this monster machine is soft on horsepower, requiring only 110hp under the bonnet. All operations are run hydraulically and controlled from the tractor cab. The tedder comes with a hydraulic adjustment for border tedding, to prevent loss of grass due to ditches or fences. Shane Cox, Power Farming’s grassland specialist, says “efficiency and ability to get the crop in, seems to be the key to getting high-quality hay and silage. As the window for harvest appears to be getting shorter and shorter. “The 85140C tedder provides great tedding, whilst coping with the tough demands of decreasing time frames, with ease. At 13.3m working width and its robust construction, it is able to deal with the harsh conditions it may face. Individual rotor adaptation enables it to contour to the ground conditions while providing superior tedding of the crop.” The 85140C features Kverneland’s tried and tested sealed ProLine Gearbox. Its strong and reliable construction provides a maintenance-free, oilimmersed gearbox, which is not affected by tine arm or chassis vibration. It does not serve as part of the mainframe but is bolted on; therefore, no strain is transmitted to the gearbox, providing

superior longevity. High-quality forage requires optimum spreading in order to speed up drying. The Super C Tines are easily set at the appropriate angle according to the conditions, without the use of tools. For heavy silage, the angle can be set more aggressively, and for fragile crops, a gentler angle can be chosen. To create the necessary strength and large dimensions, the box type frame of the Kverneland 8000 series

is an extremely solid construction. It is composed of two U- sections fitted into each other and securely welded together. High ground clearance and a wide wheelbase provide complete road stability at high transport speeds. The KV85140C has been built to be low maintenance and highly durable. This tedder can provide improved speed, flexibility and profitability to your operation. Contact Power Farming Manawatu for further details.

Cleaning out woolsheds an easy job Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark Turton and his wife Megan, have been servicing the Tararua area for more than 30 years with their fencing business. Wanting to further assist their clients with farm maintenance four years ago, they introduced their new business Clean Sweep Woolsheds to the farming sector. After many years in development, the Clean Sweep machine was launched at the Mystery Creek Field Days under new innovations. Mark has invented this machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure. “I was giving a friend a hand to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. It was a wet day, and we were spending all our time unblocking the machine. I thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t.” Mark came up with a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system, which goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, the machine is hauled out and emptied. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by using the Clean Sweep machine — you don’t have to be amongst it.”

The system is highly versatile, being used for any type of woolshed; it will even handle the lowest of sheds. The Clean Sweep machine is also ideal for cleaning the hard count out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket set-up, they can clear away deposits on the under covered yards. Since the bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed, it is not labour intensive, so it is fast and cost-effective. It is important for woolsheds to be clean, Mark says. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. It also decreases wool staining, and most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is a great fertiliser that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on their paddocks.” There is a huge variety of woolsheds around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed, count out pens or covered yards for a while, give Mark a call, and

he will provide you with a free quote. Phone 0800 WOOLSHED or 0800 966 574, after hours 06 374
