A new category has been added to the festival by the event committee, opening the doors to even more sculptures. The New Zealand Rural Open Award will allow sculptors with a contemporary edge to get involved. Committee member Carly Thomas said the award would see more scope for different subject matter and could bring a whole new outlook to the rural theme. “We want the festival to be inclusive to those who may want to step away from the more rurally-themed sculptures. Creativity can have free rein, and it will be exciting to see what comes in.” The prize money pool has grown larger to accommodate the new award. The first prize winner will take home $2,000 while the runner-up will be $500 richer. The entries will also be eligible for the People’s Choice Award. Another new addition to the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival for 2021 will not only be an opportunity for sculptors but is also a grand tribute to a Feilding champion. The late Gill Absolon was the mastermind behind Feilding’s Timona Park Orchard Trust. Gill’s family decided to honour her with a sculpture chosen at next year’s festival. The winning sculptor will receive $3,000, and the sculpture will be installed at Timona Park. Gill transformed an unused and unloved

part of the park into a haven of free-forall fruit trees. The project also saw the regeneration of the wetland and bush area as an outdoor education area. Jill’s daughter, Karen Manson said having a memorial sculpture at the park was a way of continuing her work. “It will provide a unique attraction to bring people to Timona Park and by enabling children and adults to connect with art and nature, watching both the newly-planted native bush and the sculpture develop over time. It also provides the opportunity to support and promote rural-based artists and strengthen the links between art and agriculture.” For many years, Jill farmed Suffolk beef cattle in Bainesse. Karen said her mother loved the concept of rural art, revitalising old machinery and farm equipment, creating something new, bold and beautiful that spoke of the land, farming, vision and hard work. The sculpture will be chosen by a panel from the Manawatu District Council and Gill Absolon family representatives. The winner will be announced on the day of the festival. There are more than 20 award categories in the festival with a total prize pool of more than $15,000. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival 2021 will be held at the Kimbolton Domain on Saturday, March 21.

Massey creates new short agriculture courses

Massey University has created more agriculture short courses to meet demand for training following government-mandated freshwater plans for farms. On September 3, the government introduced new rules under the new National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. One of these changes was the requirement for almost all farms in New Zealand to have a freshwater plan. Massey University’s Professor of Dairy Production Systems, Danny Donaghy said these short courses move away from the traditional ‘hours and hours of online lectures’ and will instead focus on flexibility, new technologies and case studies. “With many of these people already working jobs, it’s not feasible to have long, full-time courses. These short courses will help upskill and train people to feel confident in delivering these plans.” Building on an array of established short courses such as Sustainable Nutrient Management, Massey University’s School of Agriculture and Environment has created two new courses; Introduction to New Zealand Farm Systems and Intermediate Farm Environment Planning. A third course, Advanced Farm Environment Planning, is due to be developed in 2021. “There was a real concern in the industry that there was a lack of people who were qualified to develop plans like this — so we set out to design courses to fill this gap.” The group received funding from the New Zealand Fertiliser Association to support the development of the courses, with assistance from a reference group

woodchopping circuit by Denise Gunn Horowhenua Axemen’s Club president Stu Greig grew up around the woodchopping ring, watching his father compete.

I

t was inevitable Stu would pick up an axe and follow suit. At the age of nine, he entered his first competition — the boys’ chop. Four years later, he started competing in the men’s competitions, starting out in the novice events. Initially, Stu’s father, Peter, tried to coach him. However, Stu wouldn’t listen to his father so woodchopping legend, Goldie MacIntosh, took over. Later, as Stu grew older, he found competing alongside his father in some of the competition finals to be a big sporting highlight.

As Stu’s skill and technique improved, he won a few under-21 axemen championships. In 2007, he qualified for the New Zealand under-21 team, travelling to the Royal Melbourne Show to compete against the Australian team. “That was a big honour and also a big eye-opener,” said Stu. “A favourite memory was in Melbourne, hearing the national anthem after the first test against Australia. It sent chills down my spine.” The New Zealand woodchopping circuit begins in mid-October in Gisborne,

running through to the last weekend of March in Taumarunui. Stu generally travels to competitions with his partner, Jess, and cousin, Kingsley Te Hira. “We have travelled from Gisborne, Waiuku, Stratford to Christchurch,

Peter was the former president of the Horowhenua Axemen’s Club. “My partner has just started training for the underhand,” said Stu. There are eight disciplines within woodchopping: standing, underhand, single-saw, double-hand sawing, Jack and Jill sawing, jigger, chainsaw racing and axe throwing. Stu’s favourite event is the underhand. He also enjoys the camaraderie and

banter among competitors “The way everyone is willing to help each other no matter who it is. Also willing to offer up advice and tips to each other to make everyone a stronger competitor.” Stu recalls cutting his leg during a competition in Putaruru and the look on his sister’s face when she saw him. “She said it was because I was so casual about asking her to ring an ambulance.” During the competition season, Stu trains about three hours a week, chopping and sawing logs to practise his technique and precision. Members of the Horowhenua Axemen’s Club also get together to train. “We watch each other, picking up

Rural mailman reflects on career

PLACE STAMP HERE

by Denise Gunn Retired rural mailman, Ron Law, began his postal career in 1966 after buying two rural delivery runs in the Manawatu.

R

on was working as a mechanic at Selwyn Motors in Palmerston North when he and his wife, Jacquelin, decided to try a different type of career. The couple bought RD1, Palmerston North and RD5, Feilding. A small Anglia van, with a Royal Mail sign on the front, was part of the deal. When the odometer clocked up 360,000 miles, Ron replaced it with another. Following an increase of another 170,000 miles on the second Anglia, Ron bought an Escort van. Ron estimates he covered approximately 55,000 miles each year in the seven years he worked as a rural mailman.

“I worked out that I pushed the clutch about 500 times a day, plus many a brake pedal push as well.” As a rural mailman, Ron provided a vital link between the city and country and got to know the locals well. Each working day began around 5.30am with a trip to Bridewell Bakery to pick up bread for delivery. Crates of milk bottles were then collected from the front gate of the main post office before Ron headed inside to sort the day’s mail. The Dominion morning newspapers, hot off the press, were also loaded into Ron’s vehicle, along with the bulk mailbag.

Retired rural mailman Ron Law and his wife, Jacquelin hold a photo of Ron and former Aokautere School pupil, Kelvin Blinkiron, taken 53 years after the original photo appeared with a school journal story about Ron’s career

Ron’s first stop each day was in Bulls, just across the Rangitikei River, where the bulk mailbag was unloaded. He then drove back over the bridge towards Feilding to cover the RD5 run. On the homeward journey to Palmerston North, Ron transported boxes of flowers from growers around the Feilding area for delivery to florists in the city. “As a mailman, I had to be on time, and reliable and honest, dealing with the folk in the country,” said Ron. The afternoon followed a similar routine. Around 1pm Ron loaded bread, which he and Jacquelin had wrapped in white paper, into his van. Then it was another trip to the post office for more mail sorting. Crates of milk bottles were collected from the milk station in Gillespies Line, and large bundles of newspapers picked up from the Manawatu Standard office. Ron was back on the road again by 2pm, heading out of Palmerston North to start the RD1 round. This run began after crossing the old, wooden one-way bridge, which spanned the Manawatu River near Ashhurst, and ended with newspaper deliveries at Linton. Occasionally, Ron collected dry cleaning for farmers and visited the Country Library Services to pick up books, films, records and journals for delivery to rural schools. One area of RD1’s round included driving up the Pahiatua Track. When the track was being rebuilt, it became a sea of mud, and on one occasion Ron’s

vehicle got stuck. A local farmer came to the rescue, picking up the mail with his tractor. Ron’s mechanical knowledge was put to good use when his vehicle broke down during the RD5, Feilding run. “The engine decided it had enough. My good wife had to tow me home with our Prefect car. I worked all hours to get it running the next day.” In 1970, Ron featured in the New Zealand School Journal, part one — number one. Photographer, Gordon Burns, and writer, Walter Hirsh, accompanied Ron on the afternoon rural delivery run to check out and document his job. Photos were taken at each stage of the journey, starting with Ron refuelling his Anglia van at Palmerston North. The story has been read by thousands of school pupils. “I enjoyed being my own boss, and meeting and getting wonderful presents from the country people at Christmas time,” said Ron. When the rural delivery runs were sold, Ron returned to the motor trade, working at Bryan Bates Motors. During the years, he also worked at Treelands in Oroua Downs, Don Grady’s garage and Master Tune. Ron’s final working years were spent at Jolly and Mills, which later became McVerry Motors. Ron and Jacquelin now live in a retirement village in Palmerston North. “I have lived all my life here in Palmerston North. It’s a great city to live in.”

CASUAL WORK INFLUENCED CAREER DECISION BY DENISE GUNN SPENDING TIME ON A RELATIVE’S DAIRY FARM LED DOMINIC SEMMENS TO FOLLOW A CAREER IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

D

ominic was raised as a townie but often helped his uncle on the farm whenever opportunities became available. From the age of 16, Dominic was employed as a casual worker by his uncle, working weekends and during school holidays. That led to his first dairying job when he left school, as a dairy assistant for his uncle. Initially, however, he considered studying veterinary science, looking to qualify as a large animal vet.

“It was in part influenced by seeing what vets did on the dairy farm, and having a genuine interest in improving animal health on the farm,” he said. “I chose to go dairying because my uncle had a position open up on his farm just as I was finishing school.” Dominic said his uncle has been a role model in his life and taught him a lot. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to get out of my comfort

zone and learn a new set of skills, whilst working for someone I knew well and trusted.” After working two seasons for his uncle, Dominic took up a 2IC position for the Blair Kingsbeer and Grant Bell Partnership. The 550 mixed-breed herd is milked on the partnership’s 153ha-effective farm near Aokautere. By the end of last season, the herd was on target to reach 280,000kgMS. No supplementary feed is grown on the farm. “I haven’t been here long, but from what I’ve been told, it gets very wet

and muddy here over the winter months and doesn’t dry out too badly over summer. Having irrigation on part of the farm helps.” The 20-year-old has continued to study through Primary ITO to improve his understanding of farming systems. “Furthering my knowledge also makes me more useful to my manager/ employer.” Dominic placed third in the dairy trainee category at the 2020 Manawatu Dairy Industry Association awards. Last year, he placed second in the same category.

He lists placing in the dairy industry awards as a highlight in his career so far, along with achieving a low somatic cell count (SCC) last season. “I chose farming as my career because I love being outside,” he said. “Being outside is a great bonus to being a dairy farmer and not having to be cooped up inside. Also working with cows and trying to improve animal health through treating lame cows, diagnosing sick cows and learning about the new preventative measures to decrease health issues within the herd and increase productivity on-farm.” Transitioning into a farming lifestyle, and learning how to balance this with his hobbies, has been Dominic’s biggest challenge since entering the dairy industry. He has found joining Young Farmers, with like-minded people in a similar position to talk to and get advice from, helpful. Dominic plans to continue upskilling through completing Primary ITO courses and his Federated Farmers apprenticeship. ADVERTORIAL

Go native this Christmas

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

It’s almost the holiday season, and it wouldn’t be a Kiwi Christmas without the beautiful festive colouring of our native Pohutukawa! This Christmas season, Beaver Tree Service has some ideas and advice to help celebrate our native flora and fauna for a truly festive event. Much of our flora and fauna is unique to our little paradise, with many of our native species found nowhere else. Around 80% of our native conifers, ferns and flowering plants are only found here. Giving our native plants, birds, and insects a home is simpler than you may have realised, and a little goes a long way in terms of conservation of native species. Planting trees like kowhai or rewarewa will not only help brighten up your garden year-round but also attract native birds such as kereru and tui. Kowhai flowers intermittently from July to November, which makes them a great source of nectar for birds such as tui through the winter season. Tui are known for flying long distances just for kowhai nectar. While feeding native birds seems attractive and may bring lots to your garden, instead of a traditional bird feeder, consider planting native plants that flower or fruit instead, for a safer and more natural diet. Five finger, New Zealand flax, and coprosma are all good for Kiwi gardens and keeping our native species fed. Maintaining a healthy garden is also a good way to encourage native wildlife to keep visiting! Beaver Tree Service recommends mulching through summer to help keep the soil moist and temperatures ideal for your trees. Mulch provides a home for many insects and smaller creatures that native bird species, such as silvereye and fantail prey on.

A specialist contracting service by Mark Daniel

Purchasing their first Deutz Fahr tractor back in 2014, the fleet has gradually expanded. It now includes five of the German powerhouses from 100 to 250hp, alongside a fleet of implements with familiar names such as Kverneland, Maschio, McHale and Gaspardo, all supplied by local dealer Power Farming Manawatu. “We’ve had the 6215 TTVs on the fleet for about one and a half seasons, and it really stands out as a very comfortable tractor, combining front axle, cab suspension and an air suspension seat,” says Jamie. “Whether it’s in the paddock or at 50kp/h on the road; it’s a very smooth ride.” Jamie also notes that operators also like the ease of operation delivered by the I-Monitor display and the well laid out and logical controls. This is also the case with the TTV transmission that offers three driving modes to suit the job at hand, stepless speeds from 0 to 50kp/h and four preselectable cruise speeds, called up at the touch of a button. “These Deutz tractors have plenty of power and excellent fuel economy much better than previous brands we have operated, but they also seem to put the power to the ground well. We don’t run any ballast on the tractors, other than

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads a decent front weight block to balance the rear — but they really do pull well.” The story seems to repeat itself with the smaller, but no less impressive DF 6165 RC tractor that has been on the fleet for the past two seasons. This midrange tractor, fitted with a fuel-efficient Deutz engine that mates with a semipowershift transmission, quickly became the ‘go-to’ tractor of the fleet. “The 6165 is nimble, manoeuvrable and has a brilliant set of LED lights that turn night into day. It really lends itself to

towing, mowing and fertiliser spreading and is a firm favourite with the team.” Completing the package, Power Farming Manawatu is close by, offering 24/7 sales, parts and service support, with a team of knowledgeable, factory trained staff, with a down to earth attitude that gets issues sorted quickly and with a minimum amount of fuss. “That’s priceless for us and a key reason we choose Deutz Fahr.”

Mitsubishi’s original Eclipse was a long way from the current vehicle, which bears its namesake, and it’s a story that encapsulates the way the market has shifted. The original, a compact and sporty car, which came out of the ‘golden era’ of Japanese coupe’s and compact sports machines, was defined by being small and nimble. The alchemy which Mitsubishi has wrought in creating their latest Eclipse badged vehicle, the Eclipse Cross, is to keep that sense of nimble road-holding grip and poise, while turning everything above the wheels into a mid-sized SUV. The time of the crossover is definitely upon us when marques like Lamborghini and Aston Martin have their own sporty, sports-utility derived tall and wide cars on offer. Mitsubishi may be in a more humble price bracket with the Eclipse Cross but expect the same formula. An SUV with minimal body roll and car-like handling, removing the ‘on stilts’ and boxy image of their much older offerings like the original short wheelbase Pajero. AWD models don’t even call the system simply all-wheel-drive. It’s now super allwheel control, which hints more at the rally-crushing 4x4 set up of that other legendary Mitsubishi, the Evo Lancer, rather than ponderously large, big iron diffs and transfer cases moved about by levers like those on a steam train. No, this is all electronic, and the toys don’t stop with a suite of artificially intelligent helpers to keep the Eclipse

Stylish and contemporary, the outer skin of the Eclipse Cross conceals plenty of space for the whole family and plenty of electronic wizardry to keep them safe

Cross planted, solid and smooth in the bends. Adaptive cruise control makes highway driving a walk in the park. There’s even crash mitigation tech under the hood, to pull the Eclipse Cross up short should the driver in front feel a pressing need to stand on the brakes. There are so many gadgets at your disposal that they’ve fitted the car with a small touchpad, like you’d find on your laptop, helping to navigate

through screens, which command navigation, sound, communications and climate control. The mid-sized SUV market is tight and fierce right now, with superb offerings surfacing from many big names. However, for value for money, the Eclipse Cross, with its price point of just a touch above $40,000 for the best in the line-up, looks like a well-sorted package indeed.

ADVERTORIAL

Cartilage loss by John Arts

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue as the Member of Parliament for Rangitikei.

Whether or not you voted for me, it is my privilege to serve as your MP for the next three years. It is certainly not something I take for granted. I will continue to work hard for you, and for rural and provincial New Zealand. It was definitely a Covid-19 election, and I believe the result reflected the government’s largely successful management of the initial health crisis, and the actions taken to reduce the early impact of the pandemic. Restrictions in place because of Covid, especially in Auckland, also made campaigning very difficult in some electorates. Consequently National has lost a number of experienced and valued MPs, including my colleague Harete Hipango in neighbouring Whanganui. I’m not making excuses, though. Of course, the outcome for National was not what we wanted — but New

MANAWATU FArmING LIFeSTYLeS

Zealanders have spoken. Saturday’s result reiterates the need for National to take time to reflect, review and change. I am confident we will reemerge from this loss a stronger, more disciplined and more connected party. I know we will. National remains the second biggest party in parliament. Our job for the next three years is to be a strong and effective opposition and to hold the government to account. The next steps in the management of Covid 19 and our recovery from its effects are vital. The short and long-term future prosperity of New Zealand and New Zealanders depends on it. Thank you again for your support. I look forward to working with and for you over the next three years. My office in Feilding is open for business. Phone 06 323 7253.

Osteoarthritis is all about loss of cartilage, subsequent inflammation and changes to bone and joint structure. The result is pain and loss of mobility. The ends of bones such as the femur are covered in tough, flexible articular cartilage. It may surprise that despite its tough appearance and texture, it is 80% water, which acts like a shock absorber. Cartilage is a combination of living cells, the matrix they produce, plus water. These specialised cells are called chondrocytes, and their job is to secrete and maintain cartilage. They repair small amounts of damage as it occurs. Osteoarthritis starts when chondrocyte cells die, causing the cartilage to breakdown. While there are several things that can damage chondrocytes, in most cases these are a combination of free radical damage from insufficient antioxidants and biochemical changes caused by trauma to the joint. While the triggers vary, the outcome is chondrocyte death and cartilage loss. It is then followed by unwanted inflammation in the joint capsule that further damages cartilage. Eventually, the bone itself becomes compromised,

and the net result is more pain and restricted mobility. Nutritional therapy can help, especially in reducing inflammation, slowing the rate of cartilage loss and improving the function of existing cartilage. For example, therapeutic levels (800+ mg) of chondroitin can have significant effects on the health of chondrocytes and therefore, cartilage protection and repair. Glucosamine also helps maintain cartilage while curcumin from turmeric helps reduce inflammation and fluid accumulation. An ex-builder contacted me two years ago with significant knee pain from advanced osteoarthritis. An orthopaedic specialist had recommended knee replacement. Two years on a personalised joint health programme and he now has very little pain and no longer needs surgery. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. NZ Farmers Livestock Regional Manager, Malcolm Coombe, said farmers traditionally “attended one sale a day but our hybrid auction platform enables them to ‘virtually’ attend sales all over the country. That means they’re often conflicted, wanting to bid at several sales on the same day. So we’ve made it easier for them to attend every sale, by adjusting the dates of some of the sales we have control over, like Rongotea.” Mr Coombe said the Rongotea stockyards date back more than 100 years. “It’s always been a popular sale, the crowds attending today not that dissimilar from the photograph of a sale held in 1918. “Local stock sales are a vital part of rural life. They’re the lifeblood of small communities, like Rongotea, and we don’t expect that will ever change. They’re a chance for farming families
