Family success at show shearing

by Paul Campbell

November 2023

Masterton brother and sister Joseph Gordon and Cushla Abraham won the open shearing and woolhandling finals, respectively, at the Manawatū and West Coast A&P Show in Feilding and also set some sort of a family record. There was even more for the 24-yearold Joseph Gordon, who, in his first season in open class, just his fourth open competition and his first open final, also formed a quinella with older brother David. Just 0.3pts separated the pair after a four-man final of 20 short-wool hoggets, with third place going to Eketahuna shearer Hemi Braddick, who had the fastest time. Fourth place went to Murray Henderson, an organiser of the competition and a former Golden Shears Open finalist now extending his place in the wool industry as a flooring specialist. Both Cushla Abraham and David Gordon are current New Zealand representatives, but the performances on the day, the resurrection of the Manawatū competition after an absence of three years, were a sign of a changing of the guard. Of the 11 entries in the open shearing, only three had previously won open titles, with only five wins between them, and there had been a similar success rate among the 14 in the open woolhandling. Gordon last year reached 10 senior finals and scored two wins, despite the domination of the grade by second brother Adam, who was the first-ranked senior

Open champions Cushla Abraham (woolhandling) and brother Joseph (shearing), Joseph’s children Kaihatu (left) and Kawariki (right), and Cushla’s daughter, Meimarie (centre)

nationwide in a season in which both shore in the Golden Shears Senior Final. Scraping into the final, with just 0.1pts between in or out, and with wife Shyla and children Kawariki and Kaihatu in the audience, Gordon said he just wanted to shear as well as he could. When he

finished, he was satisfied he’d achieved that goal, the quality being more than enough to overcome any time-point deficit, with Braddick having finished almost a minute quicker. Current form ruled in other shearing grades, with Taumarunui shearer Forde

Alexander adding the senior title to a victory at the Hawke’s Bay Show’s Great Raihania Shears, Gisborne farmer Dylan Young making it three following Gisborne and Hastings wins. Kaivah Cooper, of Napier, continued an unbeaten run in junior shows after victories at Gisborne, Hastings and Wairarapa shows in successive weeks. The novice shearing final was won by Tatijana Keefe, who was also runner-up in the senior woolhandling final to Napierbased Te Whetu Brown and the junior woolhandling final was won by Napier youngster Waiari Puna. The novice final was won by Georgia Rata, of Taumarunui. Top shearers who were missing from the event weren’t all taking the weekend off, with at least five North Island shearers being in West Australia competing in the Mundijong Quick Shear in the outer suburbs of Perth, where Jack Fagan of Te Kuiti, won the first prize of A$15,000.

uanui was originally farmed by John Studholme and his wife Lucy, stocking the property with cattle in the 1870s. Unfortunately, many of the cattle went bush. Sheep later proved more successful with wool clips transported by teams of up to 70 pack horses to Napier and Cambridge.

In 1952, George Carpenter bought the 2,710ha station. When his son, Bryan and his wife Robyn, took over, they cleared scrub and gorse and fenced and developed the property. Now in the hands of Bryan’s son, Andrew and his wife Meredith, the couple has taken the farm

to the next level with fencing, fertiliser and new grass species — additional land was purchased in 2006. Ruanui currently runs Romney sheep, deer and Angus cattle, alongside cropping on 3,130ha. The family’s Angus and Romney studs were established in the 1970s. Decades of selective breeding through SIL have produced top-quality Romney progeny at Ruanui. All finished sheep are sold to Taylor Preston in Wellington and cattle are sent to Alliance. The station, situated 550m above sea level, receives an average annual rainfall between 1,100 to 1,200ml on its rich, volcanic soils. Snow falls a couple of times each year. Horses play a large part in the station, where they are bred and used daily for mustering. The shepherds break in horses each year under the guidance of station manager Jeremy Mallalieu.

“Horses are a great mode of transport,” said Meredith.

Ewes on Ruanui Station are shorn twice a year

With the ongoing decline in wool prices, Andrew and Meredith had considered for several years how to use their wool clip, particularly lambs’ wool, which was sent to China. “We always wanted to make blankets. Then Covid struck, and we were stuck at home. I got on Google search, and by November 2020, we were selling our first blankets. We were very lucky to be able to do that so quickly.” Andrew and Meredith wanted to produce a completely New Zealand-made product. “What makes us stand out is that our products are from Taihape. There are so many connections to Taihape. It’s incredible. A lot of people have worked on the land around Taihape.”

Ruanui ewes are shorn twice a year, and the lambs are done in January. The lambs’ wool, at around 29 microns, is ideal for creating soft, luxurious products. The wool is carted to Napier to be scoured at New Zealand Wool Scouring Ltd and then spun at Woolyarns NZ in Lower Hutt. Finally, when it reaches Auckland, the wool is woven into blankets by Inter-Weave. Andrew and Meredith designed the products. “The textile specialist in Auckland is helpful, as well as careful, to keep our designs original. Our point of difference is we are doing two unique patterns, and use a lot of colour.” The range of throw blankets is named after paddocks on the property and the early settlers. As Inter-Weave is New

Zealand’s only remaining commercial weaving factory, the Carpenters need to plan well in advance. “In 2020, it was easy to get the loom space. Now we have to book a year ahead,” said Meredith. “We actually lost some of our lambs’ wool in the cyclone over in Hawke’s Bay. They now just have a small plant operating in Clive. “It’s never an easy process. You have to line up each stage so it flows well, as there are three steps to it. We’ve built up good relationships with everyone.” Andrew and Meredith have ventured out from their original line of throw blankets. “Now we do a knitted bed blanket as well as pet beds, baby buggy blankets, picnic blankets and cushions. We’ve

just released a line of jerseys and beanies in collaboration with Manawatū Knitting Mills.” Meredith takes care of the business, which has grown to become larger than expected. “Mostly, I do it on my own. Sometimes our children and our station cook help out.” The couple’s four children are also keen to help out on the farm. Meredith said receiving their very first products was a huge highlight. “It blew us away to see our wool turned into finished products and how good our wool was. Now, receiving feedback from customers is a real thrill. “It reminds many of them of their childhood, as the products smell just like New Zealand wool.”

he couple started from the ground up, planting thousands of trees on their bare land, including 550 olive trees, a mix of Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino and Koroneiki varieties. Shelter belts, as well as native trees alongside the stream and in the designated wetland area, were also planted. Glenn and Lisa’s property location is ideal for growing both olives and blueberries due to the climate and the soil type. “It has cold nights and warm, mostly dry summer days, with deep, well-drained and fertile soils where the olives are growing,” said Lisa. “We selected those two crops because of their health properties. The blueberries grow on the lower, more stony soils.” After achieving a 10-year plan on their block of land, and with a passion for

increasing diversity in the environment, Glenn and Lisa began converting the property to organics. Waikawa Glen Olives and Waikawa Blueberries are now fully certified with OrganicFarm NZ. Waikawa Blueberries runs as an organic pick-your-own operation and also offers real fruit ice cream and coffee. Working in office jobs, often from their home, leaves Glenn and Lisa with the weekends and evenings to catch up with chores on the property. Glenn takes care of pruning and grove maintenance, while Lisa looks after the operations and marketing side of the business. Harvesting the olive trees takes place in mid-winter. “We contract big harvest machines with umbrella nets that open under the trees to catch the olives when the harvester shakes them,” said Glenn.

Sixteen years ago, Glenn Wigley and Lisa Buchan bought their 10ha Waikawa Beach property, specifically with growing olives and blueberries in mind.

Glenn and Lisa, with their son Ollie, run Waikawa Glen Olives and Waikawa Blueberries

The olives are transported to The Olive Press in Greytown and pressed the following day.

Lisa said the products available at Waikawa Glen Olive Oil all depend on their harvest.

Among Glenn and Lisa’s shortterm plans is to continue working their way towards renewing the olive trees’ canopy every five years. That will allow the light in and ensure the trees retain vigorous growth. “We want to prove that growing organically can be sustainable,” said Lisa. “We feel better about the ecosystem we are caretaking and the health benefits of our product. That is worth a lot.”

“Our most popular product is our blend since the varieties seem to combine into a harmonious mix. Some of our customers prefer our single varietal Frantoio or Koroneiki. We sell 250ml bottles and 500ml bottles.” Pruning begins after mid-winter. “Otherwise, in summer, we mow the grass as short as possible to keep humidity down,” said Glenn. Nutrient and soil moisture levels are also checked and the irrigation adjusted, if necessary. Weed control around the young trees initially was a major challenge for the couple. Introducing free-range poultry to forage around the trees is helping to keep the weeds down and add natural

fertiliser. The trees also provide the hens with shelter and safety from hawks. “However, now the biggest issues are fungal diseases. Even though our area is relatively dry for New Zealand, olives originated in the Mediterranean where the climate is much drier.” In the past few years, the couple has started to see the fruits of their labour with several awards for their olive oil. In 2020, Waikawa Glen Blend won best in class at the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards. Last year, this blend was awarded a gold medal and best in show. “We were thrilled with that. We have consistently been awarded gold medals for our oil. Also, we have met lovely fellow

During summer, the couple sells olive oil from their cafe shop, too.

ART EXHIBITION

CELEBRATES RURAL LIFE BY DENISE GUNN

Manawatū artist Graham Christensen is preparing for an upcoming exhibition, Rural Life, in the lead-up to Feilding’s 150-year anniversary celebrations.

T

he exhibition, which is to be held at the Coach House Museum, will feature a variety of Graham’s paintings including rural scenes and activities through to farmers at the saleyards.

For Everything You Need Around The Farm.

Graham first picked up a paintbrush while he and his wife Sue were running a holiday resort in Queensland, Australia. Sue had given him a gift voucher for three art lessons as a birthday present, and Graham filed them away.

“Six months later, I thought I had better use it, or I would never get another birthday gift from Sue,” said Graham. Although Graham had no previous interest in painting, by the third lesson, he was totally committed. Weekly art classes at the Gold Coast branch of the Royal Queensland Art Society continued for the next four years. Growing up on farms in the Manawatū, Graham has always had a connection to the land. After completing a Diploma in Agriculture at Lincoln University, he began working as a livestock technician with the Department of Agriculture in 1970. Graham was also awarded a 10-month study scholarship in France, evaluating breeds of cattle that may have been useful to import to New Zealand for a crossbreeding programme.

Manawatū artist Graham Christensen’s Rural Life exhibition opens at the Coach House Museum in December

Graham, Sue, and their young family, later moved to Mana Island where an exotic sheep breeding programme was underway. Graham was the research programme manager. In 1992, Graham was employed by Massey University to place agricultural, horticultural and veterinary students into vacation employment to gain industry experience.

Graham’s paintings mainly focus on Manawatū farming scenes and landscapes

The couple moved to Brisbane in 2005 and bought a holiday resort on the Gold Coast. Ten years later, they moved back to New Zealand, buying a 30-acre lifestyle block in Manawatū. An added bonus was a large hay barn on the property, which serves as Graham’s art studio. Graham mainly focusses on painting scenes inspired by the Manawatū farming community and landscape. He dedicates around 25 hours a week to painting. “I generally have three or four paintings on the go at any one time and have two easels set up in the studio with part-completed paintings on. One of the peculiarities of painting with oils is that they take time to dry compared with acrylics, so while one painting is drying, I can move on to another or get outside and do a few jobs on the farm.”

Many of the scenes Graham paints are from memory. Others may be painted from a number of different photographs. He is also frequently asked to paint commissions of sentimental value. “It’s an incredibly satisfying experience when the painting is completed, and the client sees it for the first time. As I work away at such a painting, I begin to understand their sentimentally. “The feeling for the subject matter grows on me, be it a historic woolshed that has been part of the family farm over several generations or a landscape of a farm that may be a young couple’s first farm.” Graham’s paintings grace the walls of homes, businesses and private collections throughout New Zealand

and the world. In November, Graham was announced as the overall winner of the 2023 Fakes and Forgeries Art competition. His winning artwork, Glenburn 2, was inspired by the work of New Zealand artist Karl Maughan. The biennial competition is hosted by the Yellow Church Gallery in Mangaweka. Artists are required to create an exact replica, copy with a twist, or a work inspired by a famous artwork or artist. An official celebration will open the Rural Life exhibition at the Coach House Museum on Friday, December 1, at 5.30pm. The public is welcome to attend, and entry to the opening celebration is free. Museum entry fees will apply following the opening celebration. The

exhibition will continue until Wednesday, February 28 2024. As the Manawatū Rural Support Service is a charity close to Graham’s heart, he is donating the entire proceeds from the sale of his painting titled Let Them Out to this cause. “I am honoured to be invited by the Coach House Museum to hold this upcoming exhibition,” said Graham.

A rose with heritage

ADVERTORIAL

by Liz Clark

Rosa gallica, or the French rose, has always fascinated me; it has a history going back thousands of years, cultivated by the ancient Greeks and Romans and later in mediaeval Europe. Until the 19th century, this rose was considered the most important cultivar from the Rosa genus. The gallica is a parent species of several important rose varieties developed from the initial rootstock. The fragrant blooms have five or more petals and, at times, produce double forms with deep pink colouring. Its leaves have a feather-like arrangement with three to seven bluish-green leaflets. The gallica cultivar group developed this rose, a range of hybrids and cultivars derived from the species that share the same vegetative characteristics. These form low-suckering shrubs, single blooms but more commonly double or semi-double, ranging in colour from white to deep pink and purple and flower once in the season. In more recent years, roses from the gallica group have been more readily available in the country. Many have won Royal Horticultural Society Awards, including the outstanding Charles de Mills, a pre-1790 variety, Beau Narcisse (Mielles pre-1824), Versicolour and Tuscany Superb. Gallicas are easy to grow and fairly resistant to diseases such as black spot and low maintenance in comparison to more modern roses. They will grow in most soils, provided there is good drainage. They thrive in organic-rich

growing mediums and appreciate an occasional dressing of blood and bone fertiliser. The flowers can be picked for the vase or left on the plant to form hips. Otherwise, deadhead any spent blossoms and gently prune back to the first five leaves at a 45-degree angle. As with most roses, gallicas are deciduous and will go dormant in winter. They can easily be propagated from cuttings or by suckering. Some of the cultivars to consider adding to the garden include Tour de Malakoff, Charles de Mills, Cardinal de Richelieu, Complicata, Duchesse de Montebello, La Belle Sultane, Orpheline de Juillet and Tuscany Superb. Talk to your local specialist nursery about further options and advice.

When we first spoke, he needed to take pain relief to walk for exercise. After six months, he said the pain had completely gone and no longer needed pain medication. Any successful programme to improve joints affected by OA should address the underlying disease process. OA is a disease that is characterised by cartilage loss due to both mechanical and biochemical processes. The major process is the loss of cartilage caused by progressive damage to specialised cells called chondrocytes. These cells live in the matrix of cartilage and are responsible for maintaining and repairing cartilage by secreting new cartilage where required. However, these cells are vulnerable to destructive processes brought about by trauma, such as sports injury, or disease processes, especially oxidative damage. It means cells and cell structures have been damaged by free radicals. The body’s response to this is our antioxidant defence systems to neutralise free radicals before they can cause damage. The greatest source of discomfort in OA is inflammation in the joint capsule, resulting in pain, swelling

How can Bettaflex help? • Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • New BioSolve® bioavailable curcumin helps joint function while gentle on the stomach. • Research indicates that chondroitin is highly effective at 800mg daily.

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula includes BioSolve® bioavailable curcumin for faster results. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend an initial higher dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate join tissue.” (John Arts, Founder, Abundant Health)

and, in some cases, heat and redness. While bone on bone can only be repaired by surgery, the discomfort from inflammation and cartilage loss can respond very well to nutritional therapy. The most important joint support compound is high-grade chondroitin sulphate. Research suggests at least 800mg daily. I like to start most on an intensive programme delivering 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a newgeneration 100% water-soluble curcumin extract. That, combined with therapeutic doses of omega-3 fish oil, can make a real difference. John Arts (Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

Mark Turton and his wife, Megan, have been servicing the Tararua area for more than 35 years with their fencing business. Wanting to assist their clients further with farm maintenance, seven years ago, they introduced their new business, Clean Sweep Woolsheds, to the farming sector. Mark has invented and built this specialised machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure. He devised a hydraulic-driven rotary hoe system that goes under the shed by itself, digging along the pile line for up to 30 metres. When it is full, the machine is hauled out and emptied. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons, but by using the Clean Sweep machine, you don’t have to be amongst it.” The system is highly versatile, being able to be used for any type of woolshed — it will even handle the lowest of sheds. The Clean Sweep machine is also ideal for cleaning the hard count-out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket setup they can clear away deposits on the under covered yards. Moreover, because the bulk of the work is being done automatically from outside the shed, it is not labourintensive, so it is fast and cost-effective.

Clean Sweep Woolsheds has made manure clean-up easy

Mark points out that it is important for woolsheds to be clean. “It creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight, and they dry faster. It also decreases wool staining, and most importantly, reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate.” The end product is a great fertiliser that the client keeps. “Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or they can spread it on to their paddocks.”

Premier Tunnel Houses extend your growing season

For more than four decades, Premier Tunnel Houses have extended the growing season for thousands of New Zealand’s home vegetable gardeners. Originally designed and developed in Gore, Southland, the tunnel houses were built to withstand the effects of adverse weather conditions. Premier Tunnel Houses have been based in Manawatu for 40 years, with Lynn and Jenny Southee running the business since the year 2000, on the outskirts of Feilding. After 23 years in the business, Lynn and Jenny have now handed the reins over to their son Carl and his wife, Renee. The couple are keen vegetable growers, enjoying access to fresh food to provide for their family all year round. Premier Tunnel Houses manufactures greenhouse kitsets in a range of sizes. Aluminium hoops and a specialised industrial-grade plastic cover, as used by commercial growers, provide an ideal all-year-round growing environment. “Our tunnel houses are robust, the aluminium hoops are closer together than most other competitors, and there are more horizontal braces,” said Carl. “Combined, these attributes generate unparalleled strength and rigidity, coupled with an ability to expand and contract as temperatures change. The plastic cover retains heat more effectively than glass, and ventilation is provided via roof vents. “Access is via one door at the front, which comes as a standard, but customers can customise access by including an additional door to the rear. Screen doors can also be added

Tip top in pink by Denise Gunn

Pink high-visibility workwear worn by the team at Tip Top Tree Services is catching the eyes of passersby. The Palmerston North-based business, established by Rory Walding in 2020, covers all urban and rural arboriculture requirements in the Manawatū. The team is available to work further afield, too. Rory has clocked up 10 years of experience in the arboriculture industry. He enjoys teaching young people the skills required and passing on his knowledge. “I’ve trained my own team,” said Rory. “They are very competent and are removing decent-sized trees.” An apprenticeship in the arboriculture industry takes up to two years, covering a range of topics from tree-climbing and felling, pruning, plant removal, soil chemistry, botany, WorkSafe practices and first aid. Communication with team members and colleagues is also a vital aspect. The idea for his team to wear pink began a couple of months ago. “It’s a high-profile job, and I thought I would put all the boys in pink,” he said. “I thought it was something different to catch people’s eyes.” Although a little reluctant to wear pink at first, the team agreed to go along with the idea. “They are learning to love it,” said Rory. The bulk of Tip Top Tree Services’ work is tree removal, especially those causing hazards or hanging over buildings.

“You can knock us on our fashion sense, but you can’t knock us on how we cut down trees,” Rory said. “Real men wear pink.” Contact Rory on 022 500 6039 for any tree work or email tiptoptreeservices@ icloud.com.

Sheepdog trials return to show

November 2023

Sheepdog trials made a return to the Manawatū & West Coast A&P Show this month after a 17-year absence. Event secretary Jess Law and her partner Hamish Swanson were instrumental in staging the trials and ensuring a team was on board to assist. Hamish also sorted an issue with the gate on the pen. By the 8am competition start time, he had made and fitted a wheel and metal foot to keep the entire pen stationary. The ground crew, Kate White, Jack McKinnon, Bridget Henson, Bruce Donald and McKenzie Downham-Smith, put in the hard yards leading up to and during the event. In addition to painting obstacles and helping with the set-up, the team also worked the sheep supplied by Kimbolton farmer Vaughan Shannon. Ryal Bush Transport carted the sheep as a sponsorship. Kate, Jack and Bridget competed in the event, too, with Jack winning the maiden man/dog class. Well-known Wanganui Centre triallists Geoff White and Don White played a large part in the competition. Geoff was chief sheep steward while Don helped set up the course and organised the many helpers. Joleen Joslin and Donna McLean were among the many women who pitched in on that Saturday with setting up. Teresa Newton and Di Birch helped with liberating the sheep on the day. Although the competition clashed with the Wairarapa Handy Dog Trial, which took place the same weekend, 83 dogs entered the Manawatū & West Coast

Otiwhiti Station cadet Remy Early at his first trial with Lucy

A&P Show. Seventy-one entrants ended up competing in the show’s indoor dog trials, including some cadets from Otiwhiti Station near Hunterville. John Carrad from Levin won the event with his maiden dog, Bonnie. He also placed second with Fleet. In third place was Don White from Mataroa with his maiden dog, Nap. The intermediate class was won by Phillipa Lambourn from Mangamahu with Danni. Second place-getter in the maiden man/dog, behind Jack McKinnon with Pearl, was A Clements and Cash. Anita Lamb and Ziva placed third. The top maiden dog went to John Carrad’s Bonnie. Brenda O’Leary from Fordell judged the event.

The Surfing for Farmers initiative won the Ember Innovations Provider of the Year Award at the 2021 Headfit Awards, with judges calling it ‘a fun, friendly and connective way to strengthen the mental wellbeing of farmers’. Surfing for Farmers was founded by Stephen Thompson in response to his community’s need to release the pressure and stress of farming. The Beef+Lamb Awards is a prestigious showcase for the industry and is renowned for picking out the top producers in this agriculture sector. However, there is more to farming than the products that make it to international plates; the rural champion award offers recognition for those making a difference at a fundamental level. This year, the winner was Surfing for Farmers, an organisation that has a significant positive impact on the mental wellbeing of rural New Zealand. Judges said Surfing for Farmers was novel, enabled connection and had a high impact on supporting farmers’ wellbeing. The volunteer-run programme spans 27 locations around New Zealand and has hosted more than 4,000 farmers, getting them out amid the waves for some very healthy rest and recreation time. There are 590 instructors involved, bringing the programme to a beach near you. “We are chuffed to be awarded the rural champion at the Beef and Lamb awards last night. We can’t win these awards without the help of all our volunteers, sponsors and farmers that come along. A massive thanks to everyone that helps keep this wheel

ADVERTORIAL

Christmas delights await by Denise Gunn

With the festive season just around the corner, The Christmas Barn offers a unique experience for all who step inside. Each year, the team at The Christmas Barn eagerly looks forward to sharing the treasure trove of gifts, decorations and individually-themed Christmas trees with visitors, friends and families. “A lot of people think we only sell Christmas decorations, but we also have some wonderful gift ideas in store,” said owner Mel Bissell. “We continually keep sourcing unique products and improving what we are offering.” The Christmas Barn developed from early beginnings as a school fundraising event when Mel was living in Hawke’s Bay. The fundraiser grew and turned into a permanent event on the calendar. “I moved to Palmerston North eight years ago and had it as a side business open on the weekends.” Three years ago, Mel and partner Craig decided to launch it as a fulltime business opening Wednesday to Saturday for four months of the year. “I had a lot of suppliers and networks already, so it was about purchasing greater volume and diversity to have something for everyone.” Following a successful search for a suitable property, a purpose-built barn was constructed to also accommodate a cafe. “We wanted to put in a cafe to serve yummy food and beautiful coffee, rain, hail or shine,” said Mel.

“A lot of people think we only sell Christmas decorations, but we also have some wonderful gift ideas in store.”

The Christmas Barn has now grown to become one of New Zealand’s largest Christmas stores, with a team of 10 helping in the store and cafe. “We have 330sqm of festive magic.” Clubs and groups regularly visit The Christmas Barn for shopping outings, craft classes and enjoy lunch at the cafe.

“We have a lot of out-of-town visitors, as well as a very supportive community. We receive amazing feedback, and we love that people really enjoy bringing their friends and families out for a visit.” In addition to opening during the festive season throughout October, November and December, The Christmas Barn also opens its doors for a month in midwinter. The Christmas Barn is located at 1104 Lockwood Road in Kairanga and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm until Christmas Eve. Phone 027 571 5372 for further information.

Little wheels and big dreams

by Andy Bryenton

November 2023

It might just be the ultimate Christmas present; a real, working off-road bike under the tree is a dream for many Kiwi children, and it could launch a lifetime of fun and adventures. There’s a boatload of options for picking the right small off-road bike for your little future track star, but all the best ones share the same small displacement 50cc single-cylinder engine. Choosing the right machine is a matter of preference. Some families are staunchly supportive of a single brand or may want to fly the colours of a young rider’s motocross heroes, while others focus on the durability of a machine that could well be handed down to younger brothers and sisters. When shopping around, it’s best to go for the big brands despite the price. You do get what you pay for, and the major players in motocross have been doing this for decades. There might be a temptation to buy a ‘no name’ bike off the Internet because, as we know, youngsters can be fickle. Is it worth spending thousands on a machine that could go unused if your child’s attention turns to other sports? Definitely. Respected names in motocross are respected because they build good bikes that are safer and less prone to failure. They’ll be competitive if your son or daughter wants to hit the junior track and hold their resale value very well. Secondly, take a look around at all the options. It’s tempting to keep a big present like this a secret, but it’s also important that your child gets the bike

Small 50cc bikes can provide an exciting introduction to motocross and adventure riding, but picking a durable, safe and reliable machine is very important

that they are most comfortable with. Let them sit in the saddle, get the feel of each option, and listen to their feedback. Needless to say, you’ll be gearing up with junior kit at the same time, so it’s possible to give your young racer a pretaste of how the world looks from behind a helmet and handlebars. It’s all great for building confidence.

Finally, take things at their pace. These small bikes are all about fun and learning, and there will be plenty of time to crank up the horsepower and speed later on. With features like throttle limiters, you can teach the fundamentals in a safe way, letting your child build their skill and enthusiasm before diving into the thrill of competitive racing.
