This year’s Hunterville Huntaway Festival will be held on November 1
The annual Shepherds Shemozzle, held during the Hunterville Huntaway Festival, is no ordinary race and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. Now into its 17th year, this unique festival developed from a concept dreamed up by a few of the locals and it has grown to become a permanent fixture on the rural events calendar, attracting competitors and spectators from all over New Zealand. Fitness levels are truly tested as shepherds and their Huntaway dogs race up and down hills and tackle obstacles over challenging 3km course. Strong stomachs are also required for the compulsory delicacies on the menu which can include sheep eyeballs, huhu grubs and warm beer. Last year’s winner of the Shepherds Shemozzle and the men’s section was Troy MacDonald and his dog Bruce, with Rangitikei shepherd Jamie Howie and her dog Phlex taking out the women’s section. The winner of the master’s section was Jonathan Smailes and his dog Bitter. Festival secretary Claire Clare said there have been more entries received prior to the day for this year’s
shemozzle. Shepherds can still enter on the day although the event is limited to 100 competitors. A Children’s Shemozzle is open to entrants aged between 9-13 years of age — the Inter-School version caters to school teams, and the recently introduced Teen Shemozzle is designed for those up to 18 years of age. No dogs are required for these events. “We have one entrant coming all the way from Queenstown for the Children’s Shemozzle,” said Mrs Clare. “Entries sold out within 18 days of opening this year — due to now being online.” New to the programme this year is a Super Family Mystery Event, and a Huntaway Dog Demonstration. The annual Shearing Contractors Challenge will run after the races. A range of entertainment will be held during the day along with quality craft stalls. Official merchandise will be for sale at the Hunterville Huntaway Festival stall. “Come along and see what is on offer for the viewers, children and competitors,” said Mrs Clare. The goings on are scheduled for Saturday, November 1, starting at noon.

New Zealand’s two competitors at this year’s World Young Shepherds Challenge in France have taken out top placings. Nineteen-year-old Mitchel Hoare, a senior cadet at Waipaoa Station in the Poverty Bay district won first place in the under-22 age group. Hunterville-based Katey Craig (21), a junior shepherd at Otiwhiti Station, was ranked best female competitor overall. The two-day challenge was held in Auvergne in south, central France. The pair competed against shepherds from 15 other countries in this international test of sheep farming skills. Mitchell grew up on a 400ha drystock farm in the King Country and is a member of the Te Kuiti Young Farmers Club. He takes home a 1,500 Euro cheque in prize-money from the competition. A change of career plans saw Katey take up training as a shepherd at Otiwhiti Station. She initially thought working as a veterinarian would be her ideal career choice. Katey’s family own a sheep and beef farm in the backblocks of Taranaki, where she grew up. Her family also own and lease a few blocks round Taranaki, running an overall total of close to
14,400 stock units. Katey worked as a wool handler in Western Australia before taking up a cadetship at Otiwhiti. It was after much encouragement from her employer Charlie Duncan that Katey decided to take part in the preliminary round of the World Young Shepherds Challenge. This competition was held at Lincoln University in July. Katey said she attributes her skills and success to her family, friends, employers, and tutors for their day-today teachings and help in preparations for the competitions. Beef + Lamb New Zealand Farmer Council national chair Martin Coup accompanied Mitchel and Katey to France. The inaugural World Young Shepherds Challenge was hosted by Beef + Lamb in 2011. The competition aims to foster professional development in the next generation of sheep farmers, build strong relationships between the sheep production sectors in each of the countries, and showcase the talent and careers in the sector.

DROVING DAYS BY DENISE GUNN
Bill and Gill Pullen spent several years on the road droving cattle around the North Island.
W
ith a background of high country mustering in the South Island, droving, and managing sheep and beef farms, Bill’s stockmanship skills were sought after by many farmers needing their cattle moved. Gill first met Bill when she was working on a dairy farm in Te Awamutu. “He was taking his dog to the vet in Cambridge, and called into use the phone,” said Gill.
“I was covered in mud and must have looked like a drowned rat in the pouring rain, but can’t have looked too bad as he called back that afternoon and asked me out.” The couple’s droving life together began in 1974 after managing sheep and beef stations in the King Country. “We bought a 21 foot caravan and a Dodge truck to tow it with, and moved back to Gisborne where we could get work,” said Gill. Gill was born and raised in Gisborne. Her father owned an orchard before he became a publican. “I grew up in the country at Hexton, then at Tatapouri on the East Coast.

“We would take about 430 on our own but the bigger mobs of 700 cattle, we would have another man to help.” Gill said droving with young children had its ups and downs, especially having a baby in cloth nappies. Her daily routine would include driving the truck with the caravan ahead of the mob, and waiting for the drovers to catch up for their smoko. Then it was time to move ahead, park up and get lunch ready. Gill would also try and get the clothes and nappies washed, using a river if there was one handy, otherwise the baby bath. “I would hang everything on the fences to dry but would have to get it all in before the cattle arrived.” Washing would then be hung out again at the next stop. If it was raining, the washing was hung up in the caravan and in the back of the truck.

“When I was 13, we shifted to Waikanae Hotel, just north of Wellington.” After leaving school, Gill worked in hotels for a couple of years before returning to Gisborne to train as a veterinary nurse. Bill, Gill and their two young sons, Roy and Ian, made the caravan their home with a temporary base at the Gisborne Showgrounds. “Bill would go out to the saleyards each day where he could pick up mobs easily enough, through the stock agents or the buyers themselves. “To start with, we did short trips around the Gisborne area until we finally got a big mob to take through to Cambridge. “After that mob we took them right through to Te Kauwhata.” Some of the droving jobs lasted for just a few weeks, but the larger mobs would take up to half a year.

The couple spent 16 years on Otiwhiti Station near Hunterville. Bill worked as manager and Gill took on the book-keeping, accounts and GST responsibilities, as well as organising the running of the cook house, gardens and a small dairy unit. “We finally bought our own place, 600 acres at Rangiwahia in 1998, but unfortunately we were not there long before Bill had a stroke,” said Gill. “After months of rehab, he returned to the farm but found it too hard to manage the stock work or crutching the sheep, so we sold the farm.” The couple then bought a small lifestyle block at Pohangina. “We regrassed, re-fenced, built new yards, and got it up-to-date, but by then we were getting itchy feet to travel again.”
Gill said wet weather was the most difficult part of droving with children. “It was winter when the mobs were on the road so as to arrive at the farms in time for the spring growth. “The best part was being in a different place every night, new views, new people to meet and talk to everyday. “The kids had plenty of space to play and we were with them every moment every day.” When Gill was pregnant with their third son, Guy, she stayed on the farm that they had been working on for the summer. Bill went out on his last droving job then secured a permanent position on a sheep and cattle station when he returned. “We spent four years at Kaikohe managing the family farm, then in 1983 we went to manage Otiwhiti Station.”
After a couple of long road trips around Australia, Bill and Gill decided to retire. They sold everything, had an eight metre Trail-Lite van built, and travelled around New Zealand for the next three years. “We have now bought a home in Hunterville but are only here a few months in the winter, as we go south every year and pick fruit down in Central Otago. Gill said this has been a great way to stay fit and it has helped Bill to get

CHILDREN’S BOOK SERIES Real life events and an agricultural background have given children’s author Jim Henderson the foundation for a series of books, CDs and DVDs reflecting farming events in New Zealand.
T
hrough his stories, Jim aims to promote family farming culture and values, and explain to children where a lot of their food comes from. Running his own 30ha organic beef farm at Whangaehu for 17 years, and experiencing floods in the area, gave Jim the inspiration for his first book ‘Flossie and the Flood’.
Four more books have followed, covering topics faced by farmers centred on snowstorms, fires, droughts and burglars. Jim has also branched into ‘Read with Me’ CDs for each book, a ‘Fun on the Farm’ 10-song CD, an ebook, and a ‘Dance Around the Farm’ DVD featuring children’s song and dance duo KiwiBop,
SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.
A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.
drawing on his Christian faith, relaxing and reflecting. Several puppets and toys associated with the books have also been created to include a Cracker Jim doll dressed in a Swanndri, a Flossie dog, and sheep soft toys. “We also have a wooden 30cm farm bike and trailer, and sometimes we have wooden toy chainsaws. “These are made by Brian Coulter at Rongotea-Woodworkers Manawatu.”

and singer/songwriter Gillian Henderwood. The ‘Dance Around the Farm’ DVD was a joint effort by local artists and performers. “The songs were mostly written by KiwiBop and recorded by them,” said Jim. “Gillian wrote and performed one, a friend Marg Eichler and myself wrote the lyrics for two.” The music was recorded by Craig Black at concert venue The Stomach in Palmerston North. A woolshed and other farm locations were used to film the dancing. “Four local girls joined KiwiBop for this and Gillian included her two young daughters in her song.” The books, CDs and DVDs are aimed towards children between two to seven years of age. Jim writes either during the day or evening, occasionally jotting ideas down in a notebook. He said his ideas mostly originate from real events, talking with friends,

Through his books, Jim has been able to share rural experiences with children who have no knowledge about farming. In return, Jim has found writing his books to be a rewarding experience on a number of different levels. “Others just love the products and look out for the new book.” Parents have also provided feedback on how well-loved Jim’s stories are. One young fan always took his Cracker Jim doll with him when he went to Starship Hospital for treatment. Jim follows up his stories and introduces them to others with appearances at kindergartens, day care centres, and fairs. “I do a ‘Cracker Jim Show’ reading my books, using the puppets to illustrate facts about farming, and doing action songs to involve the children,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun, and people are always suggesting ideas for stories. “You can put some good moral stuff in too which I think is good.” When Jim completes a story, it is sent to Phill Simmonds for illustrating. He said this is often the best part of the writing process as the book then begins to take shape. Jim plans to write more stories and further develop the characters in the Flossie series. “Hopefully we will continue to have fun and maybe make some money,” he said.

The move away from the chemical age has begun as new rules, regulations and compliance kicks in, bringing us all into line with the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. Fortunately, Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers designed to remineralise the soil and increase soil biota; ultimately bringing health and vitality back to the soil for better quality production. Recently Rodale Institute launched a global campaign to generate public awareness of the soil’s ability to reverse climate change by increasing the health of the soil through regenerative agriculture. The campaign is calling for the restructure of our global food system with the goal of reversing climate change through photosynthesis and biology. The campaign was penned by Rodal Institute an independent, non-profit agricultural research station recognised as the birthplace of organics in the USA (rodaleinstitute.org/reversing-climate-
change). Rodale’s white paper states “we would sequester more than 100 per cent of current annual CO2 emissions with a switch to widely available and inexpensive organic management practices which we term regenerative organic agriculture”. Mark Smallwood, executive director of Rodale Institute said that founder J.I Rodale had a vision so ambitious that many people wrote him off at the time. Almost 75 years later the organic movement is exploding with growth and fierce determination and the stakes are a lot higher in 2014. Rodale saw that agriculture was heading in a dangerous direction through the widespread adoption of synthetic chemicals and the industrialisation of farming. He attempted to prevent that transition. We no longer have the luxury of prevention.
Agrissentials CEO, John Morris is excited about the future possibilities away from chemical fertiliser dependancy.
We are in the dire situation of needing a cure, a reversal. The massive awakening itself is the catalyst to the cure, the future is underfoot. It’s all about the health of the soil. Agrissentials have been a part of this new farming revolution for the past twenty years; helping farmers nationwide convert to a natural system whilst optimising production and continuing to fight the good fight by looking after the soil. Topsoil is, most probably, the most valuable resource on our planet as all life is dependent upon it for survival. Agrissentials’ focus is bringing life and minerals to the soil with our multi-mineral, microbial rich, live, living fertilisers. With good levels of microbes in your soil you will have good levels of worms, beautiful, marvellous worms. Farmers using our fertilisers have abundant worm life, between the worms and the micro-organisms you have a recycling team that will keep increasing topsoil and improving the farm. Farmers tell us that within 14 to 20 days of the herd leaving the paddock all cow pats are recycled back into topsoil, increasing soil water retention quality, enhancement of mineral potency through worm castings improving phosphate levels by 700%, potassium by 1100%, nitrogen by 500%, increasing soil drainage capacity and mineral retention making the Regional Councils happy with the soil and the minerals holding their ground and looking after the environment. The time to move is now and the change is not only painless but the benefits derived from working with nature are abundant. PLUS Agrissentials have a fantastic October giveaway: every tonne of Rok Solid, 200 L of Oceans 100, or 2 x tonnes of Roketlime purchased this month goes in the draw to win a year’s worth of petrol! Our delicate dairy economy A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year.

meeting, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes. It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy.

caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products. Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market share. There is also currently a weak demand for dairy products from China. While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations. It is important that we dairy farmers support Fonterra’s farmer co-operative ownership structure and maintain the initiative and enterprise that is required to achieve the outcomes we all desire.

The Northland regional economy, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face a disastrous shortfall of in excess of $370 million. It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the Northland region of $1 billion. I attended a Fonterra farmer meeting held in Northland this week and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the

Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline. Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra spending some $23 million in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand. Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases. He explained that the current market volatility was

Why older cows become lame I once was asked why older, high-producing cows become lame more often than younger ones. That is a good question, but not always accurate. Some farmers get a lot of lame heifers as well. This has a lot to do with the different stresses on the different animal age groups. Let’s look at the older, high-producing cows. What is going on for those animals? Well, to start off with, they are older and high-producing. A highproducing cow is under a lot more stress than a low-producing cow. You may have heard of the comparison between a cow and an athlete — the better the athlete is performing the more accurately their diet and lifestyle needs to be balanced. If not, it will show in the end results. This is the same for a cow. A highproducing cow will need a more accurate and balanced diet than a low-producing cow. The big difference between a cow and an athlete is that the athlete can choose to go back to a normal, mediumactive lifestyle. A cow can’t. A cow is genetically programmed to produce milk. She does that for her offspring. We may think she does it for us but the cow
doesn’t know what happens with the milk after she has been in the cowshed. We have tricked her into producing the milk as she believes that it is for her calf, but in reality we use it for totally different purposes. So if we have managed to breed a cow that is programmed to produce a lot more milk for ‘her calf’ then that is what she wants to do because her offspring is important to keep the species alive. So, if her diet is not of a standard that she needs then she will suffer from that in other ways than just a lower milk production as the production of milk is so important to her. Another issue with older cows is that they have had more oppor tunity to get laminitis because they have been alive for longer. When a cow suffers from laminitis, her claws
are growing out of balance, therefore she ends up with the wrong weight distribution on her claws. This is evident with a bigger and a more damaged outer claw. These cows are in need of preventative trimming. This is where the outer claw needs to be trimmed back to the same size as the inner claw to get an even weight bearing distribution. Just one trim will not fix it forever.
The correct shaped and sized claw needs to be maintained just the same as one visit to the dentist won’t keep your teeth healthy forever. Trimming is an ongoing procedure which is a cheap remedy to a big problem. High-producing cows need more care, but because they produce more, they are worth it.

from one of increasing nervousness to relaxed calmness. The early part of the season is underway and grazing routines and conservation plans can now be activated. There’s a quip that every year spring growth starts on September 15 at 10.45am, and as absurd as that might seem it’s simply highlighting the fact that in mid-September, for most regions, there’s a point when spring growth becomes unstoppable. It’s interesting that even the most experienced and well prepared farmers can become a little ill at ease just prior to spring growth. If in fact spring growth is as regular as long term records indicate there should be a sense of restless anticipation, or have we begun to believe that it’s not a natural and inevitable consequence of increasing sunshine hours and warmth. Rampant spring growth can be accurately forecast by recording the soil temperature soon after sun-up each morning. As soon as a minimum temperature of 10°C is reached spring growth is underway. Pasture growth during dry frosty winters is always slower due to burning of the grass by direct sunlight magnified by the drop of water on each tip. No burning takes place when a fog or cloud follows a frost. Utilisation of pasture is high because little is tramped into the soil, and animal requirements are less due to lack of wind and increased sunlight. Pasture “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite
covers may appear to be low but brix readings indicate excellent levels of soluble sugars, verified by animals preferring pasture to hay. Frosts lift moisture from the soil and with the following direct sunlight the surface of the soil becomes noticeably drier. Lower moisture levels means less energy is required for warming; the reason early growth follows cold crisp winters. While damaged pasture has grown little above the ground, where physical soil structures are good there’s been relentless root development. And it’s this that provides the nutrient feeding system necessary for resilient growth over the next eight months. At 10°C it is also the time of greatest earthworm activity and casting on the surface should be clearly visible although much casting also takes place beneath the surface. As soil temperatures increase and the growth of grasses slow clover becomes increasingly obvious. When fertiliser programmes are geared to providing ideal conditions for this resilient plant long solid stems and big leaves largely unmolested by flea and weevil can be expected as spring progresses. Not only does clover fix abundant nitrogen free of charge it is also the tucker of choice for fast growing lambs and calves as well as high performing dairy cows. As it’s more digestible, more kilograms can be consumed and containing significantly more calcium than grass increased growth and production inevitably follows. Environmentally friendly solutions for farmers The compact yet highly efficient Clean Green Effluent system automatically disperses effluent with virtually no environmental impact through it’s super low application rate. The system starts by filtering out the solids through the Clean Green Effluent Co patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash and then the fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total freshwater consumption to about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. This reduces the amount of effluent to be dispersed to land to 20lt/cow per day. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard
systems. The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System uses 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage. The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year of liquid to be dispersed. Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system. For any further information on the system, please call Lindsay and his team on 0800 400 365.

AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING Good practice boosts fertiliser response Livestock management and good old weather watching will ensure farmers get the best dry matter response and achieve the best in animal performance results from their fertiliser application, says science strategy manager at Ballance Agri-Nutrients Warwick Catto. “While fer tiliser programmes, and the nutrients that are applied, vary throughout the year, it is worth considering the influence of increased livestock feed demand and their metabolic stresses in spring.” “During calving and lambing we advise farmers to adhere to best agricultural practice when applying fertiliser. “During spring, livestock maternal instinct means that rather than normally avoiding pasture with fertiliser residue, they may consume this pasture which puts these animals at risk, particularly from fluorosis. “It is good common sense to either spell stock from recently fertilised pasture or fertilise just before rainfall,” he said. “Spelling after nitrogen and phosphate fertiliser has been applied ensures the plants can produce the biggest response, and that less nutrient is transferred to dung or urine patches.” The following five-point plan will ensure farmers get the best grass growth and animal performance following fertiliser application: • Rotate livestock to fit with fertiliser application • Spell nitrogen fertilised pasture for seven to 14 days or until no residues are present • Spell phosphate fertilised pasture for 21 days or until 25ml of rainfall has occurred, or until no residues are present
• Apply dustier fertilisers late in the morning, once dew has dried off the grass, to avoid fertiliser sticking to the plant leaf • Watch the weather and apply fertiliser just before irrigation or light rainfall. Mr Catto said now was the right time to soil and herbage test and develop a targeted fertiliser programme, including assessing the need for trace elements such as selenium, cobalt and copper. RURAL WOMEN ADVERTORIAL
Grape seed extract for your heart A major benefit of well formulated supplements is that they can introduce beneficial nutrients at levels that translate to real health benefits. Most people will have heard of the ‘French Paradox’ — the apparent contradiction that the French diet is high in saturated fats yet they have low levels of heart disease. The most important red wine antioxidants are OPC (proanthocyanidins) from grape seeds and Resveratrol from the skins. Maybe our appalling heart health statistics have as much do with low levels of these potent antioxidants than too much butter. OPC and Resveratrol have significant cardio protective qualities. They help protect circulating cholesterol from oxidation which can help reduce inflammation in artery walls. Additionally they help to prevent blood from becoming too sticky allowing good blood flow. But here is the problem. The French high red wine intake is great for the heart but not for the liver. This is where good antioxidant supplements play an important role. A study ‘Cardioprotective Effects of Dietary Polyphenols’ (Zern, et al, 2005) observed the powerful benefits these compounds have on cholesterol metabolism and importantly in reducing the inflammatory process that is a contributor to blocked arteries. This is also why they are also great for joint health and other inflammatory problems. I started using these compounds from supplements nearly 20 years ago with profound personal benefits and I have observed their benefits in thousands of people over that time. Like all antioxidants the greatest benefits are when different antioxidants are combined. A great combination is to blend Resveratrol with well researched ActiVin™ OPC, Acai berry extract, Green tea extract, Goji extract, Ginkgo biloba and Alpha lipoic acid. Give me a call if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. New appointments at Dairy Women’s Network
by Joanne Speechly
Dairy Women’s Network has appointed three women with a wealth of experience to their growing team of professionals. Justine Kidd, winner of Dairy Woman of the Year 2013, is the incoming chair, Kym Gibson joins the events management team and Megan Edmeades is the organisation’s newest regional convener coordinator. Incumbent network chair Michelle Wilson said it is a comfort knowing that DWN will continue to go from strength to strength under Justine’s strong leadership. “It is a credit to the board to have a person with Justine’s knowledge of agriculture and governance experience at the helm.” Justine says she is excited about her new role. “This is my first chair opportunity and I’m really looking forward to the challenge. The network has come through a significant development stage under Michelle’s leadership and it is poised to move into its next phase of growth and organisational development.” Kym Gibson is looking forward to learning more about the ‘diverse and dynamic’ organisation that is DWN. “When I saw the role advertised it really appealed to me as good fit. I have come from eight years working for Life Trust so I really understand the joys and complexities of working for a non-profit organisation. It’s what I know and love.”

Kym aims to offer high quality and high impact events for DWN and she is a big believer that ‘love is in the details’. Megan Edmeades, who has stepped up from her volunteer role as East Waikato regional co-convener, says she is looking forward to being a part of the positive changes that are taking place for DWN. “The coordinator role is really about supporting our regional conveners and making sure they have access to quality resources and people. We are starting to do things in a different way, which is a real positive.”

Socks you wished Santa had delivered
by Andrew Healey
Have you ever plucked a pair of socks from your Christmas stocking? In most cases, you’d probably wish you hadn’t — they are on about the same excitement scale as handkerchiefs. However, if Santa had kindly delivered TXG graduated compression socks, I suspect your reaction would be quite different. This is because TXG compression socks can make life much more comfortable — particularly if you suffer from a health condition like diabetes, deep vein thrombosis or lymphedema, or if you are recovering from injury, or simply want to regain your active lifestyle. Compression socks work by reducing the diameter of distended veins in the legs, which results in a speeding up of venous blood flow, the compression is tightest at the ankles and becomes less constrictive towards the knees —
this graduated compression leads to increased blood circulation, reduced swelling, tiredness and aching in legs and even boosts energy levels. TXG New Zealand has a range of graduated compression socks, specifically designed for athletes and sports enthusiasts, they incorporate patented X pattern support of the ankles, reduce the build-up of lactic acid and aid recovery of muscle tissue after exercise. For more information visit: www. txgsocks.co.nz, or phone Heather on 0800 894 769 for a brochure or a free, no obligation chat about how compression wear can help you reclaim your active lifestyle.
