Farmers warned against spread of velvetleaf
The Manawatu Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is cautioning farmers not to plant left-over seed from any of the six lines of fodder beet seed imported last year and known to be contaminated with velvetleaf.

Earlier this year, Horizons Regional Council biosecurity staff confirmed findings of velvetleaf in fodder crops in the Whanganui, Ruapehu and Horowhenua districts. Staff worked closely with MPI to assist in containing the spread of the weed. Response incident controller David Yard said there are hundreds of properties around New Zealand that have velvetleaf on them. “MPI has banned the importation of any of the affected lines, but we believe there are likely to be farmers out there who bought contaminated seed lines last year and could have left-over seed in their sheds.” “Our advice is quite simply — don’t plant it this year,” said Mr Yard. Under the Biosecurity Act 1993, it is an offence to knowingly plant and grow velvetleaf. Individual velvetleaf plants produce up to 17,000 seeds. Undetected plants that grew last season could result in a major infestation. “If left unmanaged, those plants will be a significant farm and biosecurity issue.”

Any plants found that are flowering or seeding should have a large bag tied over the flower-head and the plant bent in half to capture any seeds. The plant’s location should also be marked. New velvetleaf sightings can be phoned through to the MPI hotline 0800 80 99 66. A technical expert will be able to provide advice on future management. Tough, new border restrictions to stop contaminated seed from entering New Zealand have been imposed by MPI. is • • • • • •

With the overall purpose of the Nga Puna Rau Rangitikei project to preserve and enhance the mauri of the Rangitikei River and its catchment, work is well underway to achieve those goals. Led by a group of members of Nga Pae o Rangitikei, the project is supported by the Ministry for the Environment, Horizons Regional Council, Rangitikei District Council, local landowners, and community members. The project seeks to engage communities within the Rangitikei catchment and undertake waterway restoration works in a number of areas. A community planting day held at Pourewa Stream last month focused on removing stock from waterways, eradicating willows, and planting native trees. Hunterville School pupils, Rangitikei MP Ian McKelvie and Horizons councillor Gordon McKellar lent a hand to plant 1,200 native trees as part of a total of 6,100 planted along the stream. Horizons Councillor McKellar said the Rangitikei River holds very strong cultural values, as well as recreational value. “Every little bit of improvement work that the community does in the catchment adds up to making the Rangitikei River a place for everybody to enjoy.” Te Runanga o Ngati Hauiti chairman Neville Lomax said the planting of native trees along tributaries of the Rangitikei River, such as the Pourewa Stream, will go a long way to satisfying the wishes of all people with an interest in the future of our waterways to repair the Functional Fertiliser Ltd have created

damage that has been done to our rivers in recent times. The Nga Puna Rau Rangitikei project has also completed spraying, planting and earthworks along the Makowhai Stream; begun the first stage of planting for the Moawhango River; and embarked on the first phase of restoration priorities for the Hautapu River. The next round of work includes the first stage of investigation into hydrology to identify increasing flow through Lake Oporoa and its suitability for tuna migration. Undertaking freshwater monitoring of the Hautapu River will also commence over the next few months. Financial support for the $800,000 project was recently received with a $700,000 Te Mana o Te Wai grant and $74,000 from Horizons Regional Council.

Beekeeping in the blood

Following in their great-grandfather’s footsteps, Daniel and Matthew Mason took up beekeeping when they just 12 and 14 years old.
W
ith three hives in 2010, the boys read books and attended the Manawatu Beekeepers Club meetings to learn the basics. Older, more experienced beekeepers at the club also shared their knowledge with the boys. “Gavin Lambert helped us in every aspect of beekeeping,” said Daniel. Daniel and Matthew now have 150 beehives in different sites around the Manawatu — an average of 10–20 hives per site. “We do this in order to not overcrowd an area with bees and also to allow us to produce different honey varieties, most farmers ask us to put hives on their land as it’s hugely beneficial for
the pasture pollination.” said Daniel. Daniel said a huge amount of quality food sources are very important for a bee’s healthy diet. “Well planted-up farms, urban areas and riverbanks often provide good food. “Disease and pest control is obviously very important as well and a quality queen in every hive goes a long way too. He said maintaining good morale within the colony is also helpful and this generally comes easy if everything else is in order. The Mason brothers built the majority of the hive components, which include boxes, floors, wooden frames and tin roofs, in their father’s and Mr Lambert’s workshops.

Daniel said dry, clean homes/hives that are well-sited to allow air movement and sunlight is important. Beekeeping involves a range of seasonal tasks with spring and summer being the busiest months. The bees begin to build-up in spring and honey is collected in summer. In autumn the bees begin to wind down and winter is fairly quiet. Daniel and Matthew generally check their hives every three weeks over spring, summer and autumn. “I really enjoy getting outdoors,” said Daniel. “We get to see some great places and farms each day.” Daniel said they’ve managed to get their two-wheel drive ute stuck in some very remote places. “A midday run while wearing gumboots is sometimes required to go find help.” The honey, which comprises bush, manuka and clover varieties is sold weekly at Palmerston North’s Albert Street market and at the Massey University market each month. Daniel and Matthew also produce propolis and beeswax. Queen bees as cells or live queens are sold to North Island beekeepers too. The pair find bees fascinating, particularly their selfless devotion to the hive. Daniel would like to work overseas for another beekeeper in the off-season to gain more experience. “Short-term I hope to get hive numbers up to make it more full-time while also maintaining bee health and positive relationships with the

aised in a farming area on the Kaikoura coast, Kevin could often be found as a youngster helping out on local farms. His first mustering job, in his teenage years, set the course for his career in the livestock industry. “The manager of Bluff Station was short of somebody to take the shorn ewes back 50 miles to their home block,” said Kevin. “He approached my parents and asked if I could help
drove the sheep.” On Kevin’s return, he continued mustering and shepherding around the district, along with work as a high country musterer in the Awatere Valley. Following his marriage to Lynette, the couple moved to north Canterbury to work on a cropping farm for three years. A position as herd shepherd on Raumati Station followed and Kevin managed the 5,000-hectare property while the owner recovered from a heart attack.

As head shepherd on Raumati Station, Kevin also managed the 5,000-hectare property for a while When the owner’s son returned from his OE, Kevin was rewarded for his hard work with a recommendation to Pyne Gould Guinness as stock agent material. “I got the job and was sent up to Blenheim and then I went to Seddon for quite some time. There were five different stock and station agents in Seddon, it was very competitive,” he
said. Kevin was often on the job up to seven days a week. “Sometimes I was on the phone up to 10pm, then at 5am off to sales. I enjoyed stock and always worked to achieve,” he said. Kevin was appointed head auctioneer in Blenheim in 1970, holding that post for 10 years.
“I stood up alongside some of the best auctioneers in the country.” By 1980 vineyards started to appear in the Marlborough region and farm clearance sales became a regular occurrence as the land was sold for viticulture. Kevin and Lynette moved their family to Waverley where Kevin took up work as a livestock manager for Farmers Cooperative Organisation Society (FCOS). In 1983 he formed the deer division and was appointed company manager. When Australian company Elders came to New Zealand in 1986, Kevin was approached to be an area manager and start a branch in Taranaki. “I got five or six agents together and started Elders in Hawera.” In 1989, John Buxton, the CEO of Huttons, offered Kevin a position as the North Island livestock manager. Kevin took up the offer, working for the Huttons plant in Eltham. Huttons later became Riverlands and Kevin worked for the company for 20 years, the last nine of those as executive. He retired in 2008 but continued in an advisory role for Riverlands and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). “I saw a lot of changes in the meat industry over the years, with companies closing down and takeovers,” he said. Kevin said one of his career highlights was involvement with stud sheep and selecting animals for live shipments to New Guinea, South America and Australia. He was also involved in procurement of live heifers to Korea and Angus cattle to Japan. Kevin and Lynette’s

is essential for food security and our sustainable future, it also commented that soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life span. Here at Agrissentials we dispute that call. From anecdotal evidence recorded over an eight year period, we took 50mm topsoil on a clay base down to 250mm — 300mm of topsoil depth, just by applying our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers at two applications per year over Ralph Littler’s Dairy Farm in Ruawai, Northland. The agro-chemical fertilisers and sprays have a huge impact on microorganisms resulting in soil erosion — according to Dr. Morgan Williams’ report to the Government in 2004 soil erosion from farms was calculated at 200—300 million tonnes of topsoil per year — that is not sustainable! that is locking farmers into low price, commodity markets, and high price chemical rescue remedies, that no longer work — it’s a crazy chemical treadmill. The time is right for ORGANX™ with the consumer calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously rich food together with farmers beginning to look and understand that the best way to secure their farms and their farming future is to start working with mother nature instead of working against her and having to pay bag loads of money to the chemist for remedies that struggle to maintain production. The game is changing, the consumer has already changed and the farmers are recognising new opportunities to produce better quality food for better returns. The transition from agro-chemical to ORGANX™ is seamless; basically all that happens is to exchange synthetic, soluble, erosive chemical fertilisers for Agrissentials live, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which bring health and vitality back to the farm and back to the environment — now, how simple is that! Electric bikes fit for farms The recent explosion in electric bicycle sales globally has largely occurred in towns and cities as a means of commuting and for social and recreation purposes. Others report that their kids and farm hands are keen helpers on the electric bikes, they are great for tourists on farmstays and a great asset to take to the bach during the holidays. World-class fishing ahead All the indicators point to the 2016-17 trout season shaping up to be another cracker in the lower North Island. Wellington Fish and Game reports that many anglers experienced the best fishing they’ve had in years last season with excellent numbers of trout in superb condition. ‘There’s no reason why this season should be any different,’ a spokesman says. ‘A lack of significant floods, good spawning conditions and recent snow on the tops has our stunning network of rivers and fisheries in great shape — the trout will be fighting fit. ‘Indeed, Wellington Fish and Game’s comprehensive programme of drift dive surveys shows the region’s trout population is in very good stead. ‘Around 25 rivers are sampled each year, encompassing more than 60 dives and taking in 80km total length. Numbers are good and size is even better, as a very general gauge. ‘Staff have also been encouraged to observe plenty of particularly large specimens of 10lb-plus, some of which were in surprisingly close proximity to Wellington city. ‘It goes to show that anglers will find world-class trout fishing from the Hutt River in the south of the region, to the Rangitikei in the north, and anywhere in between.
‘The lower North Island’s wily lowland browns, or the boisterous high-country rainbows (both of which reach trophy proportions), will test any angler’s skills. Then there’s the vast network of easilyaccessed, family-friendly fisheries that provide great opportunities for kids and novices alike. ‘And while many regions also enjoy productive fisheries, few can boast the lack of pressure and subsequent ‘catchability’ of trout that Wellington Fish and Game region anglers have right on their doorstep. Indeed, we have little guiding activity and certainly nowhere near the hordes of overseas anglers that descend on other spots around the country’.

New red meat strategy
11
The story of New Zealand farming and its farmers will be at the heart of Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s new market development strategy targeting new and emerging markets. Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons says development of a red meat sector story which captures the culture, values and integrity that’s long been associated with New Zealand sheep and beef farmers, will be an angle they aim to exploit in differentiating this country from its competitors in the international marketplace. “The story, building on New Zealand’s farming systems with free-range, grassfed livestock — farmed to the highest standards of animal welfare — will be authenticated through a national quality assurance programme, developed through the Red Meat Profit Partnership. This programme harmonises existing meat company QA programmes,” says Mr Parsons. “The New Zealand red meat story and national assurance programme will support meat companies’ own individual marketing strategies and will be a valuable resource for other partners like meat importers, distributors, retailers and food service operators, and government agencies.” This marketing strategy marks a change in direction for BLNZ’s market development programme.
The farmer-funded organisation has worked collaboratively with the red meat sector to develop a long-term sector strategy with clearly defined roles for BLNZ, meat exporters and marketers and industry stakeholders. “BLNZ will transition out of a market maintenance role in mature markets to focus on developing future growth opportunities, while meat companies will continue their efforts to maintain existing markets,” says Mr Parsons. Under the new direction BLNZ will be closing permanent offices in the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan in favour of more flexible resources based in New Zealand. They will continue to have a base in China and the organisation will still maintain its own strong, international network and continue to work internationally with partner organisations including meat companies, Meat Industry Association, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. “This strategy does not affect the BLNZ office in Brussels where the focus on maintaining trade access arrangements and international relationships with our counterpart organisations in Europe

is more important than ever. “Our established markets are still vitally important, however, responsibility for servicing and maintaining these markets will be managed primarily through our meat exporters using New Zealand red meat story collateral developed by BLNZ. The sector agreed that our exporters have deep commercial relationships developed over many years and are well placed to look after the market maintenance role. “We consulted widely over 12 months, running numerous focus groups and workshops and the result is quite a fundamental shift in approach, strongly supported by meat exporters and farmers. We are confident the new approach will drive greater impact for farmers on every levy dollar invested. “While New Zealand’s beef and lamb products are well positioned in consumers’ minds, farm gate returns

are still not satisfactory and an area we can influence is how we better position our products in consumers’ minds.”

Battery aid for top performance Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphate buildup on internal lead plates and, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, this crust is very easy to treat. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program. However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our program with 12 and 14 year-old batteries often still going.” “In fact our record battery life is 18 years old and still starting a tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia I think we may do better yet.” The recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphate build-up. Once treated a battery is is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key — treat them early, repeat
every two to three years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available at Farmlands or Gerard and Debbie will be at Christchurch A and P show again this year on site TP-20 and also the Camper Care Caravan show in Hardcastle Arena the week prior. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70. A more cost effective two litre commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on TradeMe. As recharge is acid based it is classed as dangerous goods and expensive to freight. You can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell and re-sealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forkifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

Be it beef or dairy, grain or fruit, vegetable or value-added processed food from a myriad sources, our primary produce has acquired a deserved reputation in the international marketplace for quality. And quality starts with the basic production line — the land. Rural contractors and agrichemical applicators are working to make sure our agricultural products stay world leaders. The aforementioned large investment in machinery, together with health, safety and environmental requirements, means that having the right skills and knowledge is more important than ever. InfraTrain, formerly known as the New Zealand Contracting Industry Training Organisation Ltd. has worked with the rural contracting industry to develop a range of qualifications which recognise these skills, and represent best practice. Qualifications are suitable for people at all levels — from those just starting

The advanced technology allows for very accurate planting of multiple types of seeds. This planter plants 50cm (20”) rows as opposed to the normal 75cm (30”) rows for maize silage to potentially increase weight yields of the crop by increasing the gap between the plants in the row. 50cm(20”) rows seem to be the way of the future! Fodder beet can now be planted with fertilizer at planting which is most beneficial.

RURAL CONTRACTORS
To tender or not? Rural contracting often starts at home — on the farm. Agriculture equipment standing idle is not going to help the bottom line and many farmers take the opportunity to undertake contract work to boost income. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how to proceed in tendering for contracts. It says tendering for work can be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’ it says. ‘Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. ‘An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward. But applying for larger and/or longterm contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You’ll need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed.

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid80s who had arthritis in her shoulder
and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-yearold whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Auditing stock crucial The recent theft of 500 dairy cows has been another harsh wake up call for the industry as farmers consider if they are taking the right precautions in protecting their second largest asset. Michael Lee, an agribusiness audit specialist at Crowe Horwath advises how the introduction of simple systems can mitigate potential theft. The Federated Farmers’ dairy industry chairperson, Andrew Hoggard points out if a bank was robbed there would be uproar, but police don’t tend to see stock as cold, hard cash. Mr Lee agrees saying, “Stock theft is extremely important for farmers as not only do they lose their capital when stock is stolen, which for a dairy cow can be up to $2,000, they also suffer the loss of revenue from that stock. “With the introduction of electronic identification tags individual stock can be scanned and identified.” He says this is one way to mitigate stock losses. “EID can be used to reconcile back to the farm’s records. Keeping track of the records regularly also means high death rates are identified in a timely manner. On top of that he suggests farmers scan their animals four times a year. “Incorporating a basic schedule of scanning allows for reconciliation of numbers to ensure there are no irregularities in stock numbers.” Mr Lee suggests a possible stock reconciliation schedule for farmers could look like the following: March — to establish the opening number for the
Michael Lee — agribusiness audit specialist at Crowe Horwath
season, May — prior to winter grazing, August — upon returning from winter grazing and prior to calving and October/ November — post calving. “Integrating simple and achievable measures in the farming calendar could potentially alert farmers to a discrepancy in stock level. While protecting farmers from stolen stock is one of the factors this mitigates, it also allows farmers to be reactive to other problems on their farm such as death rates in calving.”

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
How can Bettaflex help?
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

Wool Perspective
From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool
Mixed fortunes for wool growers An unfortunate combination of reduced Chinese buyer interest and a reluctance by a number of wool growers to meet the market means that recent wool auctions suffered rather high passin rates. With a significant reliance on China as a major export destination for New Zealand wool, the lack of competition from that country in recent months has impacted heavily on the market, lowering returns in comparison to last year’s price levels for many growers of fine crossbred and medium to strong mid-micron wool types. The two September wool auctions conducted in Christchurch drew widespread support from growers across the South Island and bale numbers catalogued exceeded the “roster” in both cases, with approximately 23,000 bales catalogued in total comprised of a good mix of all wool types. Apart from the well-reported and well-known dry conditions affecting several areas within Canterbury, weather patterns over the past couple of months have assisted shearers to get the job done with very few, if any, interruptions to the wool harvesting programme.
17
Wool broker stores have been likened to a bee-hive with trucks laden with wool bales lined up each day waiting to be unloaded before returning to farm wool sheds to be re-loaded and the trip repeated. Crossbred full-length fleece types although cheaper than earlier in the season remained in reasonable demand throughout September with buyers focused on well grown, good character wools containing low vegetable matter contamination. Second-shear types were examined critically by exporters and once again the shorter wools took the brunt of the downturn. Longer secondshear types were in a slightly better space with a few more competitors bidding on those. With the crossbred hogget wool season upon us all eyes normally turn to China to buy crossbred hoggets in the approximately 29 to 34 micron ranges. However with few buyers representing
China appearing interested, prices for those types were at similar levels to coarser short wools with no premiums evident. Some magnificent Halfbred and Corriedale wools were on offer during September but buyers were very selective according to style and micron and many of the medium and coarse types returned disappointing levels to growers who were hoping for levels similar to last year. The finer edge however drew good support with many fleece types around 25 microns reaching well in excess of 1,000 cents per clean kilogram, and 24 micron from 1,100 to 1,200 clean. Once again a very good standard of wool preparation was evident from the wool samples displayed prior to sale. With the Merino wool season in fullswing the quantity of those types offered
during September increased significantly on August. The Christchurch auction enjoyed a renewed rally of grower support compared to recent years and a large number of clips contained in the PGG Wrightson catalogue were of an exceptional standard. If there was any negative comment at all from buyers it was that a few wools were slightly over-long for their processor customers. Key focus from exporters was towards wools which were very sound for fibre strength, measuring better 38nkt or better, well skirted and even for length, but not over-classed. With the lower levels for crossbred wools likely to continue into the near future growers are urged to ensure their wools are prepared well. Growers must maximize their returns by skirting well and keeping similar lengths and strengths together. A reminder that readers should visit the Campaign for Wool website and in particular encourage children and grandchildren to visit www.woolinschools.nz to appreciate why we should all specify wool! That’s my view.

The mystery of pipelines Pipelines are those expensive things you have to have to convey water or other fluids (or gases) and best bought at cheapest possible price — correct? Wrong! If you consider it, they are often difficult to alter if the system is incorrect. All liquids and gases moving along a containment vessel have pressure loss due to friction from the walls and turbulence from various changes in “When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite

the shape or direction of the vessel. Temperature of the liquid also has a bearing, but let’s keep it to the most basic issue of pressure loss. Also some things which can be done to cut down on the turbulence including long radius bends instead of tight bends, welded fittings in place of threaded sockets, etc. One of the biggest mysteries for amateurs is the relationship between pipe sizes and friction loss/flow rate. In a nutshell, the friction loss multiplies as the pipe size reduces — they are not proportional! Often a bargain price

for next-size-smaller pipe has a major negative impact on the efficiency of the system. As a scenario: Consider a small block irrigation scheme of 4ha. The well and shared pump are 200m into neighbouring property and the most distant hydrant on the block is a further 300m, making maximum delivery length of 500m. The flow required is 300L/min. At this point it doesn’t matter what type of irrigator is used, seeing as we’re only considering the pressure loss in the main pipeline. Sizes discussed will all be internal to avoid confusion between PVC, LDPE and MDOD pipe options (never mind aluminium).
If 3" pipe were used the friction/ pressure loss could be 9psi for the full distance, if 2½" used could be 22psi loss, 2¼" could be 50psi loss, and good ole 2" alkathene could be 87psi loss! This is without the pressure required to run the irrigator or allowing for rising ground, etc. If 2" alkathene were selected for this job then the pump would quite possibly need to be 7.5hp larger than if 3" pipe were used. Rather a sober consideration for a small system and a great energy waste which could easily be avoided. Next time — The mystery of pumps! Uncommon sense
David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy
Rivers plan leads to change The passing of the Waikato Healthy Rivers Plan will instil new impetus for farmers across the country to change the way they manage their farms in the future. Farmers of course, will be angry that the bureaucracy of regional councils will soon lead to another round of reasons to whip the living daylights out of them, as if they haven’t endured enough already. Federated Farmers will continue to do its political best to soften the blow and the public perception of farmers may drop a notch or two. This has caused me to climb to the top of the hill and look out at the big picture. Several pivotal questions come to light over this dilemma. • Do we really have a problem with our streams, rivers and lakes? Yes, we do. • Is there an excess of phosphates and nitrates leaching through our soils and into our waterways? Yes, there is. • Is it fair and just to blame the farmer for this mess? No, I do not believe that we should blame the farmer entirely. There are two factors contributing to the pollution of our waterways;
• Effluent management and cattle having access • Phosphate and nitrogen application compromising the plant’s ability to hold on to those nutrients. I do believe the industry has the first question under control and this does require direct input from the farmer. Compliance on rules and regulations under general circumstances should be the responsibility of the farmer. However, I believe the second question is another story! Fertiliser application and soil nutrient needs for pasture and cropping is generally a practice which farmers leave to a specialist. These specialists are called on by farmers to advise them on what they need to grow their grass and crops. Possibly 95 percent of fertiliser in New Zealand is sold by two large companies, Ballance and Ravensdown. Interestingly, it is rumoured that these two large companies have influence on the education of soil and fertiliser scientists in New Zealand. I was impressed upon reading Ballance’s website to find that most of
the specialists who are employed by them to advise and guide farmers what to buy, are very well educated indeed. While I was pouring another mug of coffee I got to thinking, what do these big companies make? Now I know why those environmentalists are so mad. Those companies have turned their well — educated scientists into salesmen! Farmers have been brainwashed and swear allegiance to these specialists who are now leaving them holding the can. It appears that this great science that has been taught needs an overhaul. Maybe it’s someone else’s turn. I hear a leading scientist is rambling on about some new science which he doesn’t understand. Maybe if he stopped communicating and listened, he might learn something! So just a gentle suggestion to councils: turn around and throw the stones the other way and give the farmers a break!
