Trust hands out free tomato plants by Denise Gunn

Hundreds of tomato plants were given away at the Whanganui River Markets recently, thanks to the efforts of the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust (HFCRT), a local garden centre and an anonymous donor. Trust founder and director, Mark Christensen, said a total of 1,500 plants were taken to the market and two plants in pots given away to each person. “People are always really surprised to get something for free,” said Mr Christensen. Four varieties of tomatoes were available; Moonglow, Olga’s Round Golden Chicken Egg, Tangella and Mini Orange. Each of these varieties are orangecoloured with many health benefits. The Moonglow and Olga’s Round Golden Chicken Egg plants will grow medium to large-sized tomatoes. Fruit from the Tangella and Mini Orange varieties will be golf ball-sized. The tomatoes were grown under contract at a Whanganui garden centre. For the past 12 years, the trust has researched tomatoes and imported seeds from hundreds of varieties until changes in biosecurity regulations created too big a barrier. Mr Christensen said some orangecoloured tomatoes contain a different form of lycopene that is easily absorbed when eaten raw. Lycopene is an antioxidant which has numerous health benefits, including resistance to some types of cancers.

Until recently it was thought tomatoes needed to be cooked to improve the absorption of lycopene. “We think this is very exciting as a preventative method for men to help avoid prostate cancer,” said Mr Christensen. “This form of lycopene also has intermediate compounds that have been bred out of red tomatoes.” Mr Christensen said the original cultivated tomatoes were a golden colour. “We believe this form of lycopene, found in the golden/orange coloured tomatoes, was in the original tomatoes.

Red tomatoes were actually crossed and bred to be red. This diminished health benefits when they did this around 450 years ago.” The HFCRT is a registered charity with its members collecting, growing, studying and promoting heritage plants. Operating from a two-hectare orchard and gardens in Whanganui, the trust monitors the health benefits of these plants with thousands of young grafted trees and tomato plants given away on an annual basis.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Wild about flowers by Denise Gunn

A love of gardening has seen Ruthie Henchman establish a small flower farm, supplying fresh, seasonal flowers and foliage to the Manawatu area.

S

ince buying their two-acre property near Halcombe, alongside the Rangitikei River, Ruthie and her fiance James have totally transformed a bare paddock into a field of colour in just two years. “I’ve loved gardening since well before it was cool, in fact, since it was distinctly uncool,” Ruthie said. Although James isn’t a gardener, he has happily spent a lot of his weekends with a spade in hand as the couple put in the hard yards to develop the property. A variety of help from family and neighbours with some of the tasks has also been appreciated. Ruthie said initially large areas of pasture were sprayed and the turf cultivated. The couple then fought the

tide of weed seedlings that sprang to life afterwards. “In hindsight, there wasn’t really enough planning invested into the initial stages. But now that the trees are starting to gain some height and give the garden some structure, I can see where we are going.” Starting with a modest-sized patch, measuring close to 200sqm, Ruthie has added two further large areas this year. Weeds and slugs are the main ongoing challenges to deal with. “I didn’t get the weed control right, to begin with, the main culprits are buttercup, clover, paspalum and dock.” says Ruthie. Couch grass and yarrow are also persistent.

“Ideally I would like to grow organically in the future — so many of these methods feature light exclusion by mulching.” As the property was previously farmland, surrounded by crops and pastures, Ruthie found slugs in plague proportions last year. “At night nearly every square inch of grass contained a slug. They ate my daffodil flowers before they emerged, gobbled down the seedlings, and they even devoured my onions.” This year, the slug population has decreased due to grass control as more area has been converted to mowed lawns, neighbours cultivating their paddocks, and slug bait. Garden beds are mulched to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Sheep and chicken manure, wood ash and compost are also added. The inspiration to open her garden by appointment and allow people to cut flowers only began last summer. “My sister had her wedding in February of 2018 and asked me to do her flowers. I agreed, but then became progressively more unsure of my ability to get the right things to flower at the right time, so I just kept planting. Ruthie said she ended up with an unbelievably large area in flower. “As the flowers need cutting regularly to keep up production, it seemed very wasteful just to throw them all away, so I started to think about ways in which I could use them.” So Ruthie allowed a few people to come through the gardens as a trial.

She said this helped gauge which varieties and colours were likely to be successful, what people thought of the idea, and gave her some foothold on how everything could work. “Among them were designers, florists, and do-it-yourself (DIY) brides. Hearing the different perspectives and ideas from everyone was great.” Ruthie walked around the gardens with each person, cutting the chosen flowers. “It was very enjoyable, and all of the people I met were just wonderful.” Along with maintaining the garden, Ruthie plans styles and colour preferences, then orders appropriately. A lot of thought is put into ensuring there is a constant seasonal supply of flowers. Records are kept to document all the details. Ruthie said flowers have to be cut at the correct length and the right stage. “Knowing the tricks to keep each flower type looking its best in a vase is achieved by hours of research and experimenting.” Ruthie is officially opening Waituna Flower Meadows in November. “My focus moving forward is on establishing relationships with florists and designers, and I will allow the occasional DIY bride or person wanting table flowers as well.” Ruthie said people with a rough idea of colours and flower types they need, and who are fairly flexible and creative, will suit this type of experience. She also plans to offer DIY buckets in colour ranges for customers who don’t want to pick their own.

Selling garden bouquets, wrapped in brown paper, at the Humblebee Market in Hunterville is on the agenda too. Rewards from the hard work put into her garden are now coming to fruition. “I have met just the right kinds of people,

and they have gifted me so much enthusiasm and joy. Those evenings where I can just wander through and pick an armload of absolute beauty, smelling divine, and pop it in a series of vases — it’s a true pleasure.”

“Last year I got nowhere but this year did a bit better,” he said. The Freyberg High School student spends two and a half hours practising each day when he has enough time. “It’s more of a build-up thing, and I’ve practised over four or five years to get to that level. “It depends how much effort, practice and passion you put in.” The Galloway family have a longstanding tradition of duck shooting and

Championship organiser, Adam Rayner, said not only did Ritson win the Live Duck category, he grabbed first place in all the four categories entered, including pairing up with Kellan in the Team Duck contest. “For all the dominance and winning skills displayed by the teenager, the champs were hotly contested.” Mr Rayner acknowledged the countless hours Ritson has put in to perfect his craft. “Ritson’s wins were well deserved,” he said. “We have watched him develop over time into the expert duck-calling champion that the champs have now confirmed him to be.” “We are very proud to see Ritson become this year’s winner of the championships, taking over the title from reigning three-time New Zealand champion Hunter Morrow, who has stepped down,” said Mr Rayner. Ritson is thrilled with his win given the amount of practice that went into it. “It’s awesome. It feels like all the hard work paid off and was successful.” Past winners of the competition have gone on to compete overseas at the World Waterfowl Calling Championships. The championships are held in the United States each year. Five New Zealanders are travelling to compete there next month. Ritson is also keen to represent New Zealand in the world championships.

Shepherd’s Shemozzle celebrates 21 years by Denise Gunn

It all began over a couple of drinks at the pub. Three Hunterville locals, Tony Theed, Richard Horrocks and Thomas Powell, discussed organising a unique run for shepherds and their Huntaway dogs. Twenty-one years later the Shepherd’s Shemozzle, held during the annual Hunterville Huntaway Festival, has become an iconic event.

T

he Shepherd’s Shemozzle is not an ordinary race, and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. It’s a test of endurance, and it helps if competitors have a strong stomach. Starting with a mixture of organised chaos, shepherds race to collect their eager canines. Somehow in the tangled confusion of shepherds and dogs, they

pair-up and set off for the gruelling threekilometre race. After racing through Hunterville’s main street, shepherds and Huntaways head uphill and down dale, before the tackling the gut-busting Hunterville hill. Down the other side of the hill, back on the main street, an array of compulsory delicacies have been carefully prepared and set out on

a table. As shepherds reach the food table, their taste buds are put to the test as they gobble down such culinary delights as sheep eyeballs, huhu grubs and raw eggs, washed down with warm beer through a straw. Festival secretary, Christine Whinn, said the cuisine is usually created by one of the committee members.

“It’s taken to a meeting for all of us to try to make sure it will be up to standard.” The food table is often made more difficult as shepherds are usually out of breath when they reach it. The race continues with a variety of obstacles — all with rural character. A special race committee organises the

There’s no denying that having an air conditioner makes life so much more comfortable when you’re battling the climate. Even in the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter, having a reliable unit can ensure that you’re comfortable all year round.

However, there comes a time when your old trusty air conditioner just doesn’t perform as well as it once did. Excessive noise, costly repairs, unusually high energy costs and uneven cooling/heating are some signs that your air conditioning unit might be on the way out.

Towards the final stages of the shemozzle, shepherds are sometimes required to pick up bull’s testicles or eels with their teeth and then carry them onto the next stage of the competition. Christine said planning for the shemozzle each year generally starts straight after the event. “It takes a lot of organising to ensure things are booked, and we find new and exciting things to bring to the day, to keep it fresh and different. “We have a fantastic and enthusiastic team of 16 running behind the scenes of the shemozzle.” The event has

grown to become a permanent fixture on the rural events calendar, attracting competitors and spectators from all over the North Island. Several years ago, a Japanese film crew captured the event as television presenter Daisuke Miyagawa took part. Christine said the organising committee listens to feedback from people who compete on the day as well as spectators. “We want the day to be fun for the whole family, so we ensure there are things for not only the competitors but the people who come to support and watch them.” Market stalls and entertainment are available throughout the day’s event. “It takes our great

committee a lot of hours and hard work to come up with the obstacles, entertainment, and how the day is run. “I run a very tight ship on when things need to be booked and when things need to be done.” The one-day festival has grown to include a variety of competitions and entertainment, including a children’s shemozzle, a teen’s shemozzle and a speed-shearing contest. Christine said one of the highlights of the festival and shemozzle is seeing people giving it a go. “It’s putting Hunterville on the global map. ADVERTORIAL

Kickstart to healing Some people who contact me have straightforward problems. I was speaking with someone recently who has moderate osteoarthritis (OA) in her knees. We put her on a programme that included some dietary recommendation, some helpful tips and two supplements. I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Others have complex problems. A woman in her 60s contacted me early this year and had problems with OA in her hands, knees, hip and back with sciatica down one leg. She had restricted mobility and also was very tired. I created a comprehensive support programme for her to reduce inflammation throughout her body, to improve circulation and improve energy. It included an intensive supplement programme for the first three months. This programme included high doses of omega-3 fish oil to supplement her high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet. I then added my joint support programme. It is a little different than many as it is high in chondroitin sulphate (CS). Studies confirm the benefits of high doses of CS. I started her on 1,600mg of CS, with 1,600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of a high potency, rapid absorption curcumin (from turmeric) complex. We then added a potent multi-

antioxidant complex that included acai berry extract, grape seed extract (OPC), resveratrol and others. Magnesium can be particularly effective to help relax tissue around arthritic joints especially in the complex tissue around hips and backs. Within two months she noticed her thumbs were less painful and her mobility had improved. As a bonus, the antioxidant complex had stimulated her energy processes and was feeling much better in herself. After five months she was now able to cycle again. Her thumb joints were almost pain-free. Now she describes herself as largely pain-free, has much more energy and feels confident about the future. The body is simply miraculous. All I did was to give her body what it needed and then the time to heal. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Regions left behind in transport plan by Ian McKelvie MP for Rangitikei

Any ‘one-size fits all’ transport plan will never work for a diverse country like New Zealand. What may be designed for Auckland’s expanding metropolis will not work in regional New Zealand. Recently, the regular process of filling up at the pump has been getting more and more expensive with Kiwis really feeling a pinch. We are now facing record high petrol prices. The national average price recently reached a high of $2.409. Only a year ago, the price per litre was forty cents cheaper. For everyday families around New Zealand, it now costs on average an extra $20 to refuel their cars. All of this is why the government’s new fuel taxes could not be coming at a worse time. National has a different plan. We would fund regional roading projects right around the country, get government spending under control, drive down the costs Kiwi families are facing and make sure they keep more of what they earn. The current government doesn’t think this way. At the beginning of this month, it rolled out the first of three national fuel tax increases, pushing the fuel price even higher. These new fuel taxes are pushing up the cost of living by increasing the cost of driving to and from work, picking up the kids from school and going to the

supermarket. Moreover, it’s pushing up the price of basic things like food as it starts to cost more to ship goods around the country. National was also committed to investing in major transport projects up and down the country, which would have encouraged more growth towards an improved and safer road network. National’s plan was carefully balanced and prioritised our regions and still supported our cities without further tax increases. Now our regions are in limbo, and fuel prices are out of control. New Zealand deserves better, and National has a much better vision for this country.

Guidelines for farm safety Farm accidents are not inevitable, but they are unfortunately part of rural statistics whatever the best of intentions, so good advice is paramount. WorkSafe NZ says while there is no single product or document that is a blueprint, farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisers, with particular emphasis where staff employment is a factor. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says a WorkSafe adviser. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. Farmers should make sure that they are not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. “That won’t make their farm any safer. What they actually need is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving everyone. There is no substitute for the unique knowledge the farmer, family and workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation. “What’s most important is everyone on farm thinking about the risks and managing them, so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved, there is a positive impact on other parts of the business.” While there are good health and

safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. “Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified professional safety adviser — that may not be the first health and safety adviser they get talking to at the local field day.” To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and safety professions, has developed a simple checklist. Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: which professional association do you belong to — can you confirm this, what qualifications and/or certification do you have, what relevant skills and experience do you have for this job, can you give me examples of similar work you have done recently, and are you happy for us to contact your clients about your work for them? Contractors need to know what a farmer’s health and safety procedures are — so they can assess their employees’ safety onsite. “Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that exist, and mitigation that is in place.”

Cleaning to prevent M bovis

CLEANWATER

SOLUTIONS

It has been more than a year since Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in New Zealand and DairyNZ continues to be actively involved in the situation across many areas of the response. The risk of spreading M bovis bacteria between farms on machinery is low, however it is good biosecurity practice to have a ‘clean on, clean off’ policy for both machinery and people, which will protect your farm business from weeds, pests, and diseases. Insist all machinery coming onto your property is thoroughly clean, and expect it to be cleaned before it leaves your property. Disinfectant should be used ‘after’ cleaning vehicles, equipment and boots/gear that have been in contact with stock or effluent — disinfectant does not work through dirt. Remember the rule for machinery, vehicles and equipment, whether your own, visitors or contractors — separate, clean and disinfect. Ask if it needs to come on-farm — ‘if not, keep it off’ and limit visitors to your property. Do not allow any used equipment onto your farm that has not been cleaned and then disinfected — this includes boots, overalls and protective clothing. Provide a rubbish bin for dirty gloves, disposable overalls and other rubbish and have a place, with a scrubbing brush for visitors to wash their equipment, with a separate area and soap to wash hands. Keep stock trucks away from animal areas and have loading facilities close to the tanker track. Check with the trucking company that their vehicles are cleaned and disinfected after each client’s stock is moved. The tanker track must be kept clean with a ‘no go’ zone for stock to this area. Disinfect to destroy or inactivate the ‘bugs’ — apply

Use the product according to the label directions or alternatively, you can use 0.2 per cent Citric acid — one teaspoon in one-litre of water. When disinfecting the farm dairy, you are required to use approved maintenance compounds. DairyNZ has developed many resources, including the Biosecurity WOF. Contractors encourage teamwork The new presidential team, leading Rural Contractors New Zealand says the organisation plays an invaluable role in educating and upskilling contractors and promoting their interests. Recently elected president, Southland contractor David Kean, and new vice president Waikato contractor Helen Slattery are both second-generation contractors. David was vice president for five years and runs the sheep dipping and weed spraying business with his sons Jarrod and Nicol that his father Leo started in 1966. Helen has been on the board for six years, and with her husband, Roger runs the contracting business that Roger’s father and uncle started in the mid-1950s. They also operate a collection service and compacting unit for Plasback, recycling waste silage film throughout New Zealand. Helen is also on the Waikato Regional Council committee that is developing a long-term management plan to deal with velvet-leaf and other

intrusive weeds, pests and viruses. “With growing concerns about M bovis and other biosecurity threats, it has never been more important for farmers to hire contractors who hold registered or qualified contractor status,” she said. David first attended an RCNZ conference in 2000. “It was a fantastic opportunity to talk with like-minded contractors and benchmark my business against theirs. It is a great place to learn about the latest technology and get updates on changes to employment and tax law, health and safety, and other regulations,” he says. David and Helen applaud Immigration NZ’s decision to renew the RCNZ’s

Agreement in Principle, making it easier for qualified contractors who belong to the RCNZ to bring in skilled drivers from overseas. “There is a labour shortage throughout New Zealand. We try to hire New Zealanders first, but it is not always possible. “Under our AIP, RCNZ members are allowed to bring in a total of just 300 overseas agricultural machinery operators, often the young guys we bring in are more familiar with the latest technology because it arrives in Europe before here, so they serve a training role for us as well as driving.” he says.

ADVERTORIAL

Bouncing just right Supertramps Trampolines have been around for 40-odd years and are one of the only 100% New Zealand-made trampolines left in the country, with a reputation for being the longest lasting unit on the market. Supertramps Trampolines is part of Canvasland, a New Zealandowned and operated manufacturing company specialising in outdoor weather protection products. Circa 1990, Canvasland took licence of the Supertramps brand and bought Outdoor Living, a company that designed and manufactured the Superoctopus octagonal model at the time. The two companies were amalgamated, and Supertramps Trampolines was born. The manufacture of both the rectangle and octagonal models has remained in Levin ever since. It is integral to the brand to keep all manufacturing in New Zealand, supporting local businesses and maintaining quality control at its best. The structural integrity of a Supertramp Trampoline has always been at the forefront, they’re a family trampoline, and the frames are built to recognise that; using a 65 x 35 x 3.0 galvanised box section steel frame, manufactured to the highest level of Australian/ New Zealand standards: AS/NZS 1163:2016, leaving you with total confidence in your trampoline frame. Keeping manufacturing local allows us

to offer additional options like custom powder-coated frames and custom coloured safety pads. “Thirteen Christmas eves ago my husband and I put together our toddlers’ Supertramp,” says Michelle Richardson from Mt Maunganui. “While they slept we easily pieced it together. I think I was more excited than the kids. It was 25 years earlier that a Supertramp arrived in my childhood garden. I grew up on the trampoline, bouncing alone, with siblings, and really, the whole neighbourhood. Today we have three adolescents who have done the same. We are onto our second mat, but the frame is as solid as ever. I deliberately steered clear of a caged trampoline, and I’m glad. I think the spatial awareness my

kids learned a t an early age has been improved by the freedom of a Supertramp. Two of my three children have competed in trampolining, but we all enjoy a bounce especially when friends are over. Honestly, the safety pads are great, and the games double when the sides are clear. “I find myself buying another Supertramp this year: to go in the garden at the beach bach. I couldn’t recommend this brand enough. They’re durable; they’re quiet, they’re great for young and old.“ Supertramps — 100% designed and manufactured right here in Levin, New Zealand and built to last a lifetime.

“Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,” the ministry advises. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning ‘Request for information’, a quote, a proposal or tender. “An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straightforward. However, applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. “Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise.” Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first

consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply.

“You will need to think about the dayto-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself — do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment. “There are myriad considerations, and each approach may require a different viewpoint. “In essence, a good contract will be the result of good homework and planning.”

Post-winter cultivation is critical The future of farming could be at risk if the quality and extent of our soils are not maintained. “Sediment and nutrients from farming operations, along with pathogenic microbes, are some of the most important causes of reduced water quality during the post-winter period, when farmers are cultivating their paddocks,” says sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “Topsoil erosion, especially in hill country, of bare or cultivated land, leads to the loss of valuable nutrients, and disrupts infrastructure and increases the costs of maintenance such as cleaning culverts and drains. “Landowners and cultivation contractors can help mitigate the environmental risks associated with cultivation and protect their soil resources. The greatest risk can be when the protective plant cover is lost through the cultivation of soils for pasture renewal and crop establishment.” Soils should be cultivated when the moisture content is neither too high nor too low. “To assess if soils are suitable for primary cultivation, take a piece of soil, half the volume of an index finger, and press firmly to form a pencil. “Roll the soil into a ‘worm’ on the palm of one hand with the fingers of the other to about 50mm long and 4mm thick.

“Exert sufficient pressure with your fingers to reduce the diameter of the worm to 4mm in 15–20 complete forward and back movements of the fingers. Conditions are suitable for cultivation if the soil cracks before the worm is made. Soil is too wet if you can make the worm.” Contour cultivation, sowing at right angles to the prevailing wind, reducing run-off is recommended for minimising soil loss. Sediment and nutrients are carried to streams in the overland flow of water. Establish filter strips where water enters water bodies — healthy riparian vegetation improves bank stability, increases water quality, reduces stock losses, Bala Tikkisetty, sustainable agriculture adviser filters surface run-off and provides wildlife habitat. “Good riparian vegetation slows run- a high density of stems and leaves at off down so that sediment, phosphorus ground level for maximum trapping. and faecal matter settle out before “The spread of pests, particularly reaching waterways.” weeds and pathogens, by vehicles, Up to 90 per cent of sediment can cultivation machinery and equipment has be caught and trapped faecal bacteria significant consequences so machinery in grass strips will die off — grasses hygiene must be practised any time a should be 15cm high minimum with machine is moved between properties.”

Further, New Zealand’s economy relies on our social licence to produce the finest food and fibre — and it can take one case of poor animal welfare to harm this,” said Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor. “These regulations have been developed over the past three years, in consultation with industry and advocacy groups, and target lower-end offending. While most people care for their animals and are already doing it right, the regulations make it easier to take action against animal mistreatment and target specific behaviours that need to change. “Animal Welfare Inspectors from MPI and SPCA can now issue fines for certain actions, such as allowing dogs in cars to get heat stressed, or failing to provide tethered goats with access to water and shelter. Some of the regulations are infringement offences, with a set fine, while others are prosecutable offences,

It's the dirtiest job on the farm!

which could result in a larger fine and criminal conviction.” Farmers and lifestyle block owners need to ensure they, and their staff, are up to date with the rules and regulation changes concerning the welfare of animals in their care to avoid prosecution. “Most of the regulations reflect existing farm practices but have a few new requirements. Many of the transport-related regulations apply to farmers selecting lame, sick or injured stock, so farmers should check they are doing it right or face a $500 fine,” said Mr O’Connor. “Farmers and transporters can download the ‘Fit for Transport’ app or go to the MPI website where an interactive tool brings together all regulations, guidance and minimum Damien O’Connor, Minister of Agriculture standards in the codes of welfare. “Whether you are a farmer or live on the regulations will apply to you.” For a lifestyle block, own a pet or petting more information go to mpi.govt.nz/ zoo, transport livestock or ride a horse, animalregs.

SAFETY FIRST

The mystery of PTO pumps

ON THE FARM

Power take-off pumps have been around for nearly as long as tractors. Early ones used belt drive systems to increase the impeller speed from the tractor output of 540rpms. Most pumps function best between 1,600rpm and 3,600rpm depending on design, so these variances often necessitated large differences in pulley size with accompanying problems in getting the power to the pump shaft. Also, the pump turned wrong way necessitating the pump being reversed, so that the suction end was away from the water source! Fortunately, several companies designed purpose-built units with integrated water-cooled gearbox such as the Ferrari F83 pictured. Customising of these Ferrari gearboxes can be done simply — allowing various input/impeller ratios. Ferrari also builds specific PTO pumps for effluent to take the much harsher environment of pumping dirty, abrasive liquids and include a macerator as standard, and a chopper if required. Bigger is not always more beautiful. A large pump always uses more power than a correctly-specified pump. We often see medium pressure pumps being driven beyond their service speed in an attempt to produce the high pressure required. Irri-Max Ltd use specific graphs and tables to calculate which pump is correct for the job. Suction almost always needs to be larger than the inlet flange of the pump. Think about your kids’ eyes and cheeks as they suck on a thick shake with a small straw. Yep, the pump is similar. At worst, a situation called cavitation occurs, which is expensive in repairs.
