MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Regarding rural concerns

Integrity community media

by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

If the group of rural National MPs who visited the Wairarapa region recently were in any confusion about the deep concerns of rural communities about the government’s moves on water quality, they would have returned to parliament in no doubt about the serious social and economic implications of what will have lasting impact to much of the Wairarapa.

MPs Ian McKelvie (Rangitikei), Maureen Pugh (West CoastTasman), Alastair Scott (Wairarapa) and Lawrence Yule (Tukituki) viewed changing land use on a hill country property, held discussions with Wairarapa Federated Farmers members and listened to the concerns of four mayors and several agricultural consultants at a meeting in Masterton. All parties agreed for the need to continue improving farming practices for improved water quality and to deal with climate change challenges. However, the messages received from both farming and community leaders were strong on the pace of that change and the fact that farmers did not appear to be included as part of the solutions that were needed. Rural productivity was becoming poorer for all the activity created for planners, lawyers and scientists. A lack of any definitive direction from government is causing greater uncertainty than is necessary. The polarisation between rural and urban people is taking its toll as very extreme views hit the media. The implications of converting conventional farms to forestry will create irreversible

change to rural communities, not least of which will be country schools. Forestry creates far fewer jobs, and once these families leave, the districts will lose their infrastructure and amenities. Much of the concern expressed during the day was about the lack of input from people with farming experience to the process of change. The MPs contend that farmers need to be part of the solution in a reasonable time frame. Farmers are pragmatic, clever people who will think through and work out solutions. It’s not a matter of farming versus forestry; it’s New Zealanders working through change for everyone’s betterment in a way that maintains our productive sector.

FoodHQ enters international partnership

by Denise Gunn

New Zealand’s FoodHQ has recently entered into an international partnership with globallyrenowned Foodvalley in the Netherlands. Central Economic Development Agency’s chief executive Linda Stewart said the new partnership is a testament to New Zealand, and Manawatu’s leadership, capabilities and expertise in the food industry. “I want to congratulate FoodHQ on this partnership with Foodvalley,” she said. “This announcement signifies the leadership from FoodHQ, and the role it is playing in strengthening the country’s food industries, in a time where food producers and consumers around the world must seriously consider how food is being produced and how it can be improved.” From its Manawatu headquarters, FoodHQ is a national collaboration involving the majority of New Zealand’s publicly-funded food science and innovation capability. Many of FoodHQ’s partner organisations have foodrelated research and development activities based in Palmerston North. Local partners include research and educational institutions AgResearch, Massey University, Plant and Food

Research, the Riddet Institute, along with commercial food company Fonterra and supporting organisations including Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA). FoodHQ’s chief executive Abby Thompson said under the partnership, FoodHQ and Foodvalley will embark on several joint initiatives. The first includes a collaborative programme collating and sharing insights across New Zealand and the Netherlands. That will identify joint projects involving food businesses and research communities from both countries. The aim of these projects is to accelerate the generation and application of knowledge to support the development of high-value food products, delivering against both the needs of consumers and the requirements for environmental sustainability. The initial focus area for this programme is sustainable proteinrich foods. As part of the partnership, FoodHQ’s business development manager Amos Palfreyman will be based at Foodvalley for three months.

“This partnership reflects the power of today’s sharing economy and the appetite of FoodHQ and Foodvalley to work collaboratively in the interest of enhancing the world’s food industries,” said Ms Stewart. “Having Amos based in Foodvalley will be invaluable to New Zealand and Manawatu in terms of the knowledge and insights he will gain and bring back to share with food businesses, producers and entrepreneurs.” CEDA’s vision is for Manawatu to be New Zealand’s most progressive region by 2025. One of the indicators that signify the region is on its way to achieving this is the recognition Manawatu receives as one of the world’s top three agrihubs. “This announcement is a major step towards the region, achieving this vision, and we are proud to work alongside and

Nursery knowledge

Helen Johnson’s long-held interest in horticulture has seen her branch out in various aspects of propagation and cultivating.

ow, with more than 40 years of experience and knowledge behind her, Helen owns and operates a propagation nursery near Ashhurst, growing trees, shrubs and other plants. Helen and her husband, Graham, established the original business in 1995. Last year, a new limited company was formed, and the business was renamed Tree and Shrub Propagation 2018 Limited. A wide variety of trees are grown, along with shelterbelts and hedging plants for farmers, lifestyle block owners, gardeners and other nurseries all across New Zealand. “We grow farm forestry-type trees for farmers; coppicing, timber, nectar-

producing trees, and hedging plants and shrubs,” said Helen. “Tree Lucerne is another line we produce for erosion control, bee, bird, animal and honey production. Other plants produced are some perennials, some native plants and grasses.” Described as a growing-on nursery, Helen grows from seed, division and cuttings. “We are the start of a plant’s life,” she said. “The plants we grow are strong, healthy and good quality.” Helen said horticulture is a huge subject, and one never stops learning. When Helen’s children were youngsters, she continued furthering her horticultural knowledge through

studying several polytechnic courses by correspondence. Since then, Helen has been involved in market gardening, establishing a large plum orchard, commercial flower growing, founding the Ashhurst Garden Centre retail outlet and now plant propagation. “I have probably made every mistake possible to grow plants and learnt from it.” Helen and Graham’s property covers close to 50 acres, with the nursery and stock plants occupying approximately 1.5ha. All plants are grown outdoors. “This means we can send them all over the country and they will cope with the climate changes, as we get most types of weather in the Manawatu; because we have a farm as well as the nursery, you learn a lot about what will grow where, and how.” The remainder of the farm is used to run sheep, make hay and graze a couple of horses. A small area is also set aside to grow daffodils on an annual basis for Cancer Society New Zealand’s Daffodil Day. Plants are sold through the business website and local sales. Helen endeavours to be available by appointment if people require assistance with plant selection for their property. The seasonal routine often requires forward-planning to grow trees,

shrubs and plants one season ahead. May and December are generally the busiest time of year. Helen starts work in the nursery at around 7.30am, and her team of employees arrive half an hour later. The daily routine covers potting, weeding, grading out plants for orders, cuttings, fertilising, attending to phone calls and emails and packing plants for courier and road transport. During summer the plants also require irrigation. “It’s a weather-dependent industry; droughts mean people don’t plant trees and shrubs.” Helen has found the biggest challenges are deciding what to grow from season to season, and the quantity of a particular line. “When some plants are promoted commercially, we need to try to assess whether we will have enough for sales.” She said bugs, insects and fungal diseases are also challenging and often coincide with weather patterns. However, the highlights far outweigh the challenges. Helen finds enjoyment in producing a plant from a cutting or seed and nurturing it. She also appreciates the work her staff members put into the business. “We have not had a lot of people who are keen on working outside on

Grevillea thelemanniana Spider Net a miserable, wet, rainy day — but it is great on a nice, sunny day.” In addition to running a successful nursery, Helen enjoys passing on the knowledge she has gained during the last 40 years. “Many of the folk in

the nursery industry, who had lots of knowledge, have now moved on. You never stop learning in this industry. It is a big, wide world and giving people knowledge about plant care, planting and needs are important.”

am’s interest in creating stems back a few decades to when she was a young farming mum with three sons. “I have always made things; from my own wedding dress and kids’ clothes to doing up my 1947 Matchless WD motorbike, limestone carving and sculptures for my garden. When I would see something I liked but could not afford to buy it, as we had a mortgage on the farm and three boys, I would go home and work out how to make it myself.”

For many years, Pam and her husband Bill ran 650 sheep and 40 heifers on their 100ha northern Manawatu farm. Their lambs were 100% grass-fed and sold to Ovation in Feilding. Cattle were sold to local trade. Pam said baleage and oats were grown on the farm to cover winter requirements. Born and bred into farming, Bill is the fourth generation to farm the property. His great-grandparents, Joseph and Ellen, were the original farm owners in the late 1890s. The farm left the

family’s hands for several decades when Joseph retired and sold it to a Russian fur trader. Bill’s father, Rex, bought the farm back in 1980. In late 2017 a farm accident left Bill with a broken neck. Pam became his main carer, juggling working on the farm around his needs. “He was in a full-body brace from waist to the top of his head for six weeks,” said Pam. The accident has been the couple’s biggest challenge, along with dealing with ACC. “We are self-employed, never had any other accidents, and paid ACC for 28 years. ACC has been no help at all; just lots of promises. “We have now leased all but 50 acres, as Bill cannot farm due to pain and on-going issues with his neck.” In an attempt to take a break from the

physical, mental and emotional stresses associated with farming and providing care for a loved one, Pam returned to creating. “It was a hard and emotional slog,” she said. She began working on a sculpture named Prickles the Pony, using barbed wire, old number eight wire and some rusty old rebar. “I was nursing him inside and when I had enough I could say see ya, I’m going to work on Prickles. It was my mental health time, and it was a big help. I finished it the week before the festival. I had already made a farmer and his dog, and wife, and lots of large balls out of barbed wire.” Last year’s sculpture festival was the first Pam had entered. She took home the Creative Cocky award with Prickles the Pony. This year her copper firefighter sculpture earned her the Local Yokel section. Brother-in-law Terry Hawkins has become a friendly rival. Terry was the overall winner of last year’s festival with his sculpture ‘Haast Eagle — Pouakai’. Pam and Terry are both well-known identities in the local community. As the owner of the Kimbolton Garage, Terry has found his business a popular drop- off point for locals to leave materials for use in sculptures. For many years, Pam has been a senior volunteer firefighter at Cheltenham’s fire

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

AN EQUESTRIAN

VISION by Ann van Engelen

Laura Macnab has grown up with horses on her parent’s beef and sheep farm on the rugged West Coast, and this has led her into an equestrian interest resulting in overseas travel.

“I

have been wearing gumboots my whole life. Mum breeds Welsh ponies and Dad is also from a horsey family — so a love of horses is in my blood. My two sisters and I learnt to ride from a very young age, but I am the only one that stuck with it and gave it a crack professionally,” says Laura. Laura’s passion for horses has seen her represent New Zealand through the NZ Horse Council at the Australasian Grand National Championships in Australia. She placed third in the 21 to under 30-year-old age group and was also a team member in the Royal

Agricultural Society Equestrian TriNations team in England placing second. “Riding is mostly a solo sport, so competing as part of a team is an awesome experience.” Laura is in her last year of an ag science degree majoring in equine and would like to become a bloodstock agent, for racehorses and buy and sell on behalf. She also received a scholarship through Thoroughbred NZ, which will see her travel to the Irish National Stud in Ireland next year. “I am extremely humbled and excited to have been chosen as one of this

Spring is here

ow that spring has sprung it is important to know how to care for your trees, which, like all plants, require care and attention to reach their full potential. Spring is when all the flowering trees are out, and some people consider their gardens to look their best, with the garden bulbs complimenting the trees. This is the time where people come out of hibernation and start to venture back into their gardens, especially with daylight savings around the corner. As arborists, we are coming into our busiest season. Avid gardeners are coming outside in droves and start to notice that their trees need attention. Tidying your garden for summer starts with dealing with your trees. For example, you might be wanting to plant out a border with perennials or annuals, however the trees are blocking all the light from this area. Other scenarios are that a certain tree is getting far too large for the confined space that it is in, or maybe a tree is in major decline so needs to be removed. As an arborist and previously a landscape gardener, I love the challenge when dealing with my gardening clients to come up with a resolution in regards to tree removal, thinning, lifting or maybe pruning to allow for underplanting.

If you are looking to plant some flowering trees then now is a good time to do so before it gets too hot. This will allow the trees to establish and get their feet set firmly in the ground. Early spring is also a good time to transplant small trees or shrubs that may not be in the right spot in your yard. Some examples of trees with incredible flowers are deciduous magnolias, dogwoods and cherry trees to name a few. I recently went to Leaf Lands and was very impressed with the wide variety of trees they have. Leaf Lands is a family run wholesale tree nursery located on Napier Road in Palmerston North. I’m looking forward to planting my own garden out soon, and am looking to plant a grove of Betula utilis ‘Silver Shadow’ birch trees which have a stunning white bark on the trunk. I like to plant in groups of odd numbers, underplanting with small maples, rhododendron or even daffodils. If you want to kick your landscaping up to the next level, consulting a professional arborist is a great idea. Bryce Robb is Director/Head Arborist of Beaver Tree Service

year’s recipients of the Irish National Stud Scholarship put up by the Taylor Family. This scholarship is extra special to me as Faith Taylor is my late grandmother Margaret Macnab’s sister. I am incredibly proud to be heading to Ireland in January 2019 has been a really great year for me, and this might just top it all off. To be involved with horses, you must be prepared to work hard, and take all the advice you can get from experienced people — every single day I learn something new. “We have cliffs and hills on the farm, which is home to Hereford Angus Cross beef cattle and a mix of sheep breeds. My sisters get the motorbike, and I grab the horse to muster the stock. We help where we can such as docking, drenching and shifting stock. “I show competitively and have worked in the thoroughbred industry for the last five years. Before university, I worked at Te Akau Stud during the summer. Now I do track work at the Awapuni Racecourse in the morning before uni. “I started competing because mum competed in the UK — she is English. I wanted to ride in the ring with the big kids, so she took me to a few shows when I was seven and 14 years later here I am. I have met the most incredible horsemen and women. “As soon as we were tall enough to get on a pony, we had to saddle, bridle, brush and care for our horses. Mum and dad gave us a really good start in life. My mum breeds our horses so she didn’t have to buy ponies for us and she

breeds the perfect children’s ponies. If I am available, I help with the foaling, mares and stallion. “We hard feed our show animals, ensuring they get all the nutrients and supplements to perform at their best. Whether it is adding salt or a toxin binder into their feed, make sure you can provide for them, especially if you want your animal to perform like an athlete. Even saddles and bridles have to fit correctly — you wouldn’t send a runner out with ill-fitting shoes or clothes. My horses get saddles fitted every six months to a year to ensure they can perform at their very best.” Laura says if you want to purchase a horse and you are new to owning one ask someone you know who has a horse, or contact your local riding school and make sure you are ready for the commitment. “They are not like a dog or cat — it is a much bigger animal. Get lessons and ask lots of questions — don’t be afraid to fall off and get your hands dirty. They are social, and interaction is important. Everyone starts somewhere and it is not going to be an instant success story. They are animals, and you have to treat them like animals but enjoy them as they can change your life. “I am lucky to have the support of my family as often weekends in summer are spent at horse shows. I am sure sometimes they would rather be somewhere else, but they understand my commitment to the sport, and I can’t thank them enough. I was always the horse girl at school. I can’t imagine

Ensuring you have the ability to feed and care for your horse properly is of high importance to Laura who grew up on a beef and sheep farm

A pain in the …

Protecting rural progress

by John Arts

by Greg Woollaston, Partner, Dewhirst Law, Palmerston North

Muscle pain can have many causes; it can be anything from injury, genetics, medication side effects and a number of diseases. The most common causes of muscle pain I help with are cramp, restless leg syndrome, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Fibromyalgia (FM) and side effects of cholesterollowering medication.

Rural property and the industries utilising it, continue to represent the engine room of the Kiwi economy, with significant investment needed to operate in any sector.

There are a number of effective nutritional medicine strategies we can use to help with muscle function. Our goal is to help relax stressed muscle fibres and improve muscle oxygenation through improved circulation — this is important at night for conditions like cramped and restless legs. Muscle stiffness and pain can be a side effect of statin cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statins slow the rate of the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production. However, this same enzyme is responsible for producing coenzyme Q10. A high-quality coenzyme Q10 like the US-patented CoQsol can help. Some diseases cause muscle pain. Two more common problems are the inflammatory condition PMR and FM, a non-inflammatory muscle problem. With PMR we target overproduction of inflammatory immune system chemicals (cytokines and prostaglandins) and help restore immune function. With FM we focus on adding compounds like magnesium and

MSM (sulphur) to relax and oxygenate muscles. Once we know the cause of the pain, my role is to identify the healing processes damaged or affected by the problem. For example, cramp and restless leg syndrome can be an indication of mineral deficiencies or poor peripheral circulation. As an example, people with cramp generally respond very well to magnesium therapy. The best magnesium supplements use expensive, but better-absorbed amino acid chelated forms. While magnesium can be very effective, some people need to be careful with magnesium therapy, especially those with digestive issues or on some medications. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Despite the values at stake, many rural sector participants continue to operate without the benefit of any viable form of asset protection, relationship property or succession structuring in place. With significant changes impending on our relationship property law, it has never been more important for those with significant intergenerational assets to secure experienced guidance to ensure they are protected. Asset protection begins with an analysis of your objectives and core industry risks/exposure. There are a number of trading vehicles that can be used to minimise exposure to creditors (common examples being trading via a limited liability company, joint ventures, or partnerships). In the relationship property sphere, the use of family trusts, often in conjunction with contracting out agreements (sometimes called ‘pre-nups’) can provide a far greater level of asset protection than the default provisions that the Property

What is essential, is to put in place an asset protection plan prior to engaging in a new business venture or relationship, as retrospective attempts at asset protection planning are often ineffectual at law. AG CONTRACTORS GPS — the contractors friend From top dressing aircraft to tractors and any number of mobile machines in between, GPS has become just another tool that can make farming, the agricultural services and contractors serving the rural industry more efficient — and thus more profitable. Once the stuff of mystery and imagination, and used to guide US military manoeuvres and missiles, today GPS is — as the Chase TV chap would say “just another day at the office”. GPS-based applications in precision farming are being used for farm planning, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance, crop scouting, variable rate applications, and yield mapping. GPS allows farmers and their contractors to work during low visibility field conditions such as rain, dust, fog, and darkness. In the past, it was difficult for farmers to correlate production techniques and crop yields with land variability. This limited their ability to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies that could have enhanced their production. Today, more precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, and better control of the dispersion of those chemicals are possible through precision agriculture, thus reducing expenses, producing a higher yield, and creating a more environmentally

friendly farm. Precision agriculture is changing the way farmers and agribusinesses view the land from which they reap their profits. It is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plantanimal requirements and prescribing and applying site-specific treatments to increase agricultural production and protect the environment. Where farmers may have once treated their fields uniformly, they are now seeing benefits from micromanaging. Many of the new innovations rely on the integration of on-board computers, data collection sensors, and GPS time and position reference systems. Some people believe that the benefits of precision agriculture can only be realised on large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques that can be developed for use by all. farmers. Through the use of GPS, GIS, and remote sensing, information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers

can achieve additional benefits by combining better utilisation of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting the natural resources for future use. Location information is collected by GPS receivers for mapping field boundaries, roads, irrigation systems, and problem areas in crops such as weeds or disease. The accuracy of GPS allows farmers to create farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations and distances between points of interest. They can accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or

BIOBOOST 6-2-0 ®

monitor crop conditions. Crop advisors use rugged data collection devices with GPS for accurate positioning to map pest, insect, and weed infestations in the field. Pest problem areas in crops can be pinpointed and mapped for future management decisions and input recommendations. The same field data can also be used by aircraft sprayers, enabling accurate swathing of fields without use of human ‘flaggers’ to guide them. Crop dusters equipped with GPS are able to fly accurate swaths over the field, applying chemicals only where needed, minimising chemical drift, reducing the amount of chemicals needed, thereby benefiting the environment.

Time to tender for business Spring will soon turn to summer and the farm contracting business will be warming up along with the temperatures and with that comes time to get equipment out of the shed and ready for balage or any number of farm contract jobs. As always is the case, idle machinery is not going to add to the income and for many farmers who also make up membership of the Rural Contractors Association of New Zealand, summer is an opportunity to get a welcome earner off the actual home farm, The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some good advice on how to get into the paperwork that involves tendering for contracts, an activity that may be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards, and an aid in planning work schedules and perhaps taking on additional seasonal staff. “You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’’ a ministry spokesman says. “Tendering is the process involved in responding to an RFx a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward. “But applying for larger and/or longterm contracts will require a significant

amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. “Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. “You will need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself: Do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment?”

Keep farm workers safe Farmers, lifestyle block owners, and contractors alike must make sure everyone is safe when on a property and that any risks from farm work are reasonably managed, eliminated or minimised. Worksafe says farmers must ensure risks from any previous work carried out on the farm such as spraying hazardous substances, are reasonably managed to protect the health and safety of contractors. Farm buildings and any area where work is being carried out, apart from the farm house must be safe for everyone. Contractors must also keep farmers healthy and safe by ensuring any risks from their work that could affect the farmer, farm workers or other contractors on the farm are reasonably managed. If a risk can’t be eliminated then it must be minimised, so far as is reasonably practicable. Farmers and contractors should consult, cooperate and coordinate activities with each other. They must work together to meet their overlapping duties every time a

contractor comes on farm. Having a faceto-face or over the phone meeting before work starts can help to reach a common understanding and establish clear roles, responsibilities and actions. It will also prevent any gaps in managing health and safety risks. The more influence and control a farmer or contractor has over a health and safety matter, the more responsibility they are likely to have. Checklists and possible questions for both parties include knowing where each will be working, having contact details and informing each other of expected or unexpected risks and other work activity on the farm that could pose a risk to them and how to manage and communicate those risks. Contractors must be informed of farm rules such as speed limits, alcohol or drug use and any expectations of their

RONGOTEA

behaviour on farm. Ensure all parties know relevant emergency procedures and determine appropriate time in/ time out reporting. Have a back-up plan, especially if there is no phone coverage and keep a record of what you have discussed. Printing and marking-up a farm map to show hazards is also a helpful idea and have visitors call in at the farmhouse, or phone before starting work. If necessary help them across

rough terrain using an appropriate vehicle. The contractor should advise the farmer where the team will be working on the property should there be various destinations or projects being taken care of and check for hazards themselves as well and inform all concerned of any extra emergency procedures that may need to be known. In all environments, safety must always come first.

Rural contracting shows growth Rural contracting in New Zealand is now a $1.5b industry, accounting for nearly one percent of the national employment figures and it is growing by 5.8 percent a year, according to an Infometrics survey conducted for the Rural Contractors Association. “Our 500-plus association members are sprinkled from Northland to Southland,” says RCNZ president David Kean. “Much of that growth is due to our relationship with, and work for, the farming community. We regard that as of primary importance, many of us contractors are farmers ourselves and most of us live in rural communities. Like you, our growth is tied to the health of the rural sector and the ability to secure good workers to help us run our businesses.” RCNZ has been cautiously welcoming of the proposals from Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway to introduce a simpler, employer-led system for temporary work visas for skilled regional workers. “We have been pleased to engage with Federated Farmers in putting a case for rural contracting to sit alongside the dairy farming, forestry and meat industries in the first sectorwide agreements. Our members help farmers get in enough winter feed, stay

on top of weeds and a host of other tasks which allow your farms to remain productive. We need a steady reliable supply of skilled operators to drive our machinery from spring to autumn; getting approval to employ such people from overseas through the current hoops of WINZ and Immigration is an annual and frustrating nightmare. “That said, we were again able to secure a reasonable supply of skilled overseas machinery operators, with 149 coming in spring through the existing Approval in Principle process, to work with 46 of our members. While we do all we can to employ New Zealanders, there simply aren’t enough with the skills or aptitude. “With industry challenges including the M. Bovis outbreak, which we collectively appear to have managed relatively well, contractors appreciate the cooperation of farmers in providing water and appropriate washing areas. “We also appreciate your assistance as we remain vigilant as contractors on noxious weeds including Velvetleaf and

Noogoora burr. We have to advise the authorities if we see any of these weeds, otherwise we can face huge fines as well as the risk of spreading the weeds to other farms. “Chemical spraying remains a core part of our work for farmers and I have to say the new Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, regulations are making things very complicated. I’d suggest farmers take note here, because while you do not currently have to meet such baffling, bureaucratic requirements, such extensions are always a possibility. “RCNZ continues to run its annual Agrichemical roadshows around regional centres to provide a convenient way for our members — farmers welcome too — to stay up to date with the regulations and requirements. Our Infometrics report confirms just how important rural contractors are with our sector now employing nearly 23,000 people — about the same population as Masterton. That number has more than doubled in the last 20 years as farmers and others look for efficiencies.”

Working with the soil by Andy Bryenton

Ask a seasoned farming veteran what the most complex system on the farm is, and they won’t talk about any of the machinery in the shed. They won’t even mention the modern data management systems, which are becoming so important to working the land. In fact, those who picked that this is a trick question will identify the soil itself, with its microscopic biome, as the most complex system they work with. Science has taught us a lot about soil management since the earliest days of the plough and the three-field rotation system. Moreover, one of the most important lessons has been about compaction. Soil needs to breathe, as we all know, but there’s a paradox when it’s also necessary to pilot large tractors and machinery to achieve economies of scale across big areas of land. Enter the Case Magnum Rowtrac, a modular, modifiable machine, which takes part of its design cues from the military and many more from solid soil science. Based on the renowned Magnum series, with outputs between 170 and 315 PTO hp, the Rowtrac is designed to fit a furrowed field hand in glove. That’s due in part to its half-track configuration; a design lifted from the big heavy-duty

trucks that towed artillery guns in the second world war. In their case, they had to traverse broken up mud and snow with a huge load towed behind. In this Case (you see what we did there) the front tyres are specially designed to run at super low pressure for a bigger contact patch, spreading out the weight. The rear treads put down the power over a series of pivoting rollers, which also oscillate, keeping four points of ground contact at all times. The end result is a powerful and large tractor, which ‘snowshoes’ over the soil, lighter on its feet than many operators dared to believe. Even better, for those servicing row crops, there’s the ability to build out the width of both the rear and front axles without sacrificing this ability. With row spacing between 20 and 40 inches (these are US designed machines), there’s a setting that right for most applications. The addition of automation, such as AFS AccuGuide

auto guidance, means that at the end of the day, those who choose the Rowtrac

will enjoy razor-straight rows with wellaerated soil.

Speakers for 2019 Expo Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry leads a strong lineup of speakers confirmed for the 2019 Effluent & Environment Expo at Mystery Creek Events Centre on November 19 and 20. Expo organiser Amanda Hodgson says farmers can choose to attend any of the educational seminars running throughout both days of the expo. “We wanted to deliver a combination of education on effluent management and something for the top few inches too in our speaker slots this year. Making sure farmers are sorted in terms of their own wellbeing and mental health is crucial, so we are so pleased to have someone of the calibre and experience of Sir Graham on our speaker list,” says Amanda.

“I recently heard him speak at another event and he is amazing. His role with the All Blacks means he is well equipped to talk about the value of team and personal wellbeing. He is also very amusing and fun, so it is a great opportunity for farmers and their staff to come along and enjoy themselves as well as learning something from a master of people management.” Sir Graham will speak at 4pm on the first day of this year’s expo, Tuesday, November 19. “Also confirmed are Manawatu dairy farmer and author of The Lean Dairy Farm, Jana Hocken, and respected agribusiness commentator Jacqueline Rowarth. Jana is the author of The Lean Dairy Farm, a book she has written to help farmers learn how to run more efficient, profitable dairy units. Rowarth is a regular columnist in several rural publications. The primary aim of the expo is to provide farmers with positive,

effluent management solutions, but we can see potential to broaden that out to offer farmers advice, products and services across the entire farm environment package. This is really just the start of a journey. “A new layout, which takes in the entire event centre pavilion at Mystery Creek, home of the National Fieldays event just south of Hamilton, means there is scope to increase exhibitor numbers to more than 100. This year’s expo will follow a similar format to the highly successful 2018 event and remain free for farmers to attend, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Fonterra FarmSource, Rabobank, DairyNZ, Waikato Regional Council, Mystery Creek, and official media partner NZ Dairy Exporter. “Speaker times and seminar topics were released in the expo’s official guide that was mailed to every dairy farm in the country with the October 15 issue of NZ Dairy Exporter.” Farmers are encouraged to visit the expo

During the past four months, City Honda Horowhenua has run a special promotion — book your bike into the workshop and go in the draw to win a Honda CRF50F kids’ bike or Honda EU22 generator.

New staff were employed to increase the depth of knowledge and experience in the workshop and cope with the increased workload. Currently, City Honda Horowhenua is again searching for more technicians as the work continues to flood in. The promotion draws to a close on Thursday, October 31, and on

November 1 a special event is being held to find the winner. Join the team onsite, 108 Oxford Street, Levin, anytime from 3pm until 8pm — the live draw will be held at 6pm. There will be a BBQ and refreshments plus displays of exciting new models. The live draw will be held under police supervision, and somebody must win one of the exciting prizes. Defeat was not an option As a young boy growing up in Hamamatsu, Japan, Soichiro Honda was not the young academic his parents (a blacksmith and a weaver) hoped for. Instead, he meticulously copied the official stamp he needed to say he’d shown his parents his grades, forging it from a bicycle pedal’s rubber. This escapade taught the young Soichiro two things; reliance on his own skills with his hands, and the value of never giving up. He left school with no qualifications but with an affinity for machinery and engineering. He went to Tokyo as a teenager and begged to be allowed to work as a mechanic, a position he enjoyed until the age of 22 when he returned home to open his own garage. He drove a turbocharged Ford in one of Japan’s first auto races in 1936, at a time when turbocharging was all but unknown outside of aircraft. The experimental car crashed, and Soichiro badly injured his left eye. But while he gave up racing from that point, he saw a future in powerful internal combustion machines.

His next step was to forge piston rings for Toyota corporation. Through a process of gruelling trial and error, which saw Honda lose the contract at one point, Soichiro persevered and managed to fully automate the manufacturing, in the style of Henry Ford (a man he’d be compared to in later life). Just as things were taking off, with new factories opening and new components hitting the production line, the war effort crumbled and Allied bombs destroyed one of Soichiro’s factories. Just as the Imperial army surrendered, an earthquake leveled the other. Honda sold the scrap metal and debris to Toyota at a huge loss, but moved on. Next came the idea of converting bicycles with 50cc generator motors, making Japan’s first motorbikes. In the rationed, fuel-scarce postwar reconstruction they sold like hot cakes, and soon Honda were making their own

engines, frames, gas tanks, wheels; whole bikes, which formed the basis for the best selling 50cc of all time, the Cub. Just 14 years after losing it all, Honda established his first motorcycle

dealership in the United States. The nation which was once Japan’s wartime rival became one of his biggest markets, in which he would go on to outsell Harley Davidson.
