Volunteers pitch in to craft a school garden for eco-education; now, there’s a chance to speak up for your local school and win

The Kiwi Guardians contest is a simple one. It asks parents and children to explain why their school should receive a $5,000 grant to build an interactive green classroom — a garden area to nurture growing things and the next generation of kaitiaki. Learning through interaction with school vegetable gardens, horticulture programmes, and the raising of native seedlings is a big part of the curriculum for many of the Manawatū area’s young students already, with some even achieving Enviro Gold status for their efforts. Increasingly, a curriculum of horticulture and plant biology is being taught at a primary and even kindergarten level, relevant skills for children who will become tomorrow’s farmers. “It’s really special that so many Kiwi kids have chosen to get out into nature and learn about how important protecting our environment is as part of Kiwi Guardians. So we are excited to continue to encourage this kaitiakitanga,” says Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of marketing, Andrew Davis. “Planting trees, shrubs and even veggies is a great way to start a lifelong

journey of appreciating and protecting New Zealand’s environment,” said DOC director Geoff Ensor. The partnership between DOC and Toyota goes deeper than one providing vehicles for the other. Their Kiwi Guardians programme has been up and running since 2016. It features more than 120 activities for students to try in the classroom setting or at home, earning medals as they go. To win a green space prize, parents are encouraged to visit facebook.com/kiwiguardians, tag their favourite local school and give a reason why they should receive a $5,000 garden. At the same time, there are many outof-school nature based activities to try as well, earning medals along the way. Toyota and DOC have awarded close to 100,000 medals for specific Guardian projects, in the same way as the Scouts award badges for the mastery of specific skills. To claim their medal, children complete the form on the Toyota Kiwi Guardians website recounting their experiences. Two weeks later, a medal will arrive in the post, rewarding children for their efforts.

Council not convinced with Three Waters

OctOber 2021

Manawatū District Council is not convinced by the government’s proposed Three Waters Reform Programme, following overwhelming opposition from community feedback. Community feedback saw 94% of respondents opposed the government’s proposal out of a total of 2,540 responses. In a written submission to the Minister of Local Government Nanaia Mahuta, Manawatū District Mayor Helen Worboys outlined the reasons for the council’s position. “This Three Waters Reform Programme, which is the government’s preferred model of service delivery, is not in the best interests of the Manawatū community. This is based on feedback that we have received from our community, our own calculations, and the view of council,” she said. The council’s three waters assets have an estimated current market value (optimised replacement cost) of $329 million, and these have been paid for by the community. The Department of Internal Affairs dashboard classifies MDC’s operating performance for Three Waters as exceeding expectations. The view of the council and the community is that their Three Waters infrastructure and service delivery is not broken and does not need fixing. Ongoing renewals, maintenance and upgrades are budgeted in the 10 Year Plan and 30 Year Asset Management Plans.

“The community of the Manawatū have told us that they want our three water services to be owned, managed, built and operated locally by people who understand our district. “We need to be able to be nimble and make Three Waters planning decisions in conjunction with roading planning, district planning Helen Worboys, Manawatū District Council Mayor and with a local economic development lens.” raising doubts that committees While the removal of associated managing these schemes would see Three Waters debt is highlighted as a their current cash reserves reinvested benefit of the proposal, Mayor Worboys into their assets. said any additional borrowing and Mayor Worboys said that the council’s interest expense would still need to be preferred position is to retain the status recovered from ratepayers. quo. RIDING

THE WESTERN WAY BY DENISE GUNN Growing up in a non-horsey family didn’t dampen Serafina McCarthy’s enthusiasm for ponies.

A

s a horse-mad youngster, Serafina begged and borrowed rides on friends’ ponies, attending Petre Pony Club in Wanganui. It wasn’t until her late teens that her own horse arrived. Around that same time, a friend took Serafina along to a Manawatū Western Riding Club day. From there, Serafina said she never looked back. “I have been a member off and on since the late 90s and started out very much as a rookie.” Since her early days in the sport, Serafina has gone on to represent New Zealand twice as an amateur rider for the American Quarter Horse Association of New Zealand.

“Every two years, the Trans-Tasman for youth and amateur (adult nonprofessional) riders takes place. “I competed on the 2017 team that went to Australia and the 2019 team that competed at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo. Both times it was the most amazing experience; lots of laughs, friends and memories made.” Trans-Tasman challenge competitors ride a borrowed horse for the week, with three to four days to become familiar with their mounts. Riders receive training from clinicians, and then for the last two days of the event, teams from Australia and New Zealand compete against each other.

Serafina and her horse, RQH Six Shooter, with an Australian rider during the 2019 Trans-Tasman event at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo

“Both times, the New Zealand amateur team won, with the last one in Taupo coming down to the wire and New Zealand winning by one point. “These opportunities are all due to the support I have received over the years from the Manawatū Western Riding Club and those who have given so much to the club over the years,” said Serafina. “Covid has obviously damped down any training opportunities lately as we can’t get any overseas trainers or judges in. However, the online aspect has been pretty good.” Serafina currently owns RQH Six Shooter, a 14-year-old, bay, registered Quarter Horse gelding. RQH Six Shooter, bred and shown in Australia as a junior horse, was imported to New Zealand as a six-year-old. Serafina purchased the gelding back in 2015.

“He is my one in a million horse and has taught me so much,” she said. A lifestyle block near Marton, owned by Serafina and her husband Matt, provides plenty of space for Serafina to ride her horse and raise their two sons. Matt manages Central Logistics Services Limited in Feilding. Always keen to learn more, Serafina trains her horse regularly. “I am always hungry for more knowledge. Our horses are trained to be willingly guided, with the end result being self-carriage on a loose rein. “Recently, I have started competing in the event, western riding, which is a pattern of lead changes performed at specific times between cones. I also enjoy showmanship at halter, which is a pattern performed in-hand, and horsemanship — a ridden pattern. I love showing and competing.”

She is currently vice president. “I’m very passionate about giving back to the club and people who have helped me over the years. “We are a small community but all here because we love our horses. I have made lifelong friends through the sport.”

HOT ON THE HOOF BY DENISE GUNN New Zealand Farrier Association president Jock Good grew up around horses, learning to ride before he could walk.

J

ock’s parents began dairy farming in Ōkato, later moving to farms near Inglewood and Alton. As his father trained racehorses, it was only natural that Jock and his siblings all learnt to ride and attend Pony Club. “I was captain of the Waikato Pony Club team and was a really keen rider,” said Jock. At the age of 15, Jock put aside his dreams of riding at the Olympics or becoming a jockey. Instead, he went to Pio Pio to train as a farrier under Graham and Sue Jones. Jock said Graham and Sue were great employers, beginning his career in a very positive way. Meanwhile, the Good family sharemilked and owned farms throughout Taranaki, eventually moving to the Manawatū, buying a farm in Himatangi. “However, by that point, I had moved to Pio Pio and was pursuing the farrier dream,” said Jock. On completing his apprenticeship, Jock returned to Taranaki to work as a stable manager for racehorse trainer John Wheeler. Jock’s wife Helen also worked there. When the couple started a family, they established Good Farrier Services, and Jock began shoeing horses for a living. “The racing stables were a lot of travel away from my family, travelling around the races both nationally and internationally. We trained successful racehorses

such as Poetic Prince and Rough Habit, owning our own at one point as well. However, with a family, the farrier business has served us well financially and career-wise over the years.” Starting out as a farrier, Jock’s typical day began at 6am and finished around 5pm, five days a week. After a full day of shoeing, he would spend the next couple of hours on the phone organising the following day’s work. All invoices were handwritten on paper. Four years ago, Jock’s daughter Kate set the business up with accounting and appointment booking software. Invoices are now emailed, and the next appointment is booked straight after shoeing the last horse. Jock shoes a mix of pleasure horses and racehorses with a never-ending shortage of clients. Kate said one of her father’s main strengths as a farrier is achieving results with difficult shoeings. “If a horse has any issue with feet and legs, he is the one that can tell you why. If he can’t fix it, there are multiple farriers within the network that can help. So although trimming and shoeing seem straightforward, there are so many factors to consider. “Demand is really strong for a farrier, but it has to be sustainable. Having clients appreciate that you are under an animal that weighs a tonne, repeating it 10 times days and having them behave, is also really important and been a really big challenge over the years,” she said.

Horses have featured throughout Jock’s life Giving back to the farrier industry has been important to Jock and seen him take on many apprentices over the years. Jock’s career has also taken him all across New Zealand, as well as Australia, Canada and England for events and competitions. “We have clinics and functions, with global and nationally significant figures in the industry, for career progression and knowledge transfer,” he said. “Every year, we head to Australia to compete over there and have also ventured to Calgary in Canada to compete in the Stampede. I’ve also travelled to England to compete in another competition.” Kate said her father is a communityfocussed person, always happy to give back and get involved. His progression from Central District Farriers Association president to taking on the New Zealand Farriers Association presidency was the next step.

“He was the club captain for a while for the Inglewood Rugby Club, and leadership jobs seem to naturally gravitate towards him. “Jock is always happy to help young people in the industry and is forever on the phone with functions and planning things. It’s something that he enjoys and has passed on to us. Both my parents achieved great things when they were younger, with sport.” With a 60th birthday on the horizon next year, Jock is starting to assess what retirement might look like. “This is a physically demanding job and something that I won’t be able to do forever. We are KiwiSaver contributors, and also own property, so everything is revolving around preparing the business for what that might look like,” said Jock.

TEAMWORK

SAVES LIVES BY DENISE GUNN In just 10 minutes, the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter can be airborne, providing a vital service in life and death situations.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter crew

W

ith around 70% of the rescue helicopter’s missions involving flying to rural and remote locations, speed and agility are crucial. Cardiac events, farm machinery mishaps and vehicle accidents form the majority of these call-outs. Reaching and treating accident victims, and patients suffering medical emergencies, within the ‘golden hour’, makes an immense difference to their outcome. Last year the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter clocked up 414 missions. Six team members form the current Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter crew: two pilots, two crewmen and two intensive care paramedics. Crew members come from various backgrounds and have extensive experience in aviation and paramedicine.

Base manager and crewman Graeme Spiers recalls a serious accident in Levin, which he attended earlier in his career. He said the mission was so memorable for both him and the family that were involved, that they visit the team every year to thank them. The crew appreciates seeing past patients and people whose lives have been impacted by their service. Three-year-old Ciara’s mother, Laura, rushed her daughter to medical help when the little girl went into respiratory distress. Concerned about her low oxygen levels, Ciara was immediately taken straight to hospital. As Ciara’s oxygen levels decreased further, doctors inserted a breathing tube. Soon afterwards, Ciara, and Laura, were transferred by a rescue helicopter to

a specialist children’s hospital, where Ciara was placed in ICU. Doctors diagnosed Ciara with severe pneumonia and lifethreatening asthma. Ciara spent four days in ICU and a further six days in a ward. “I can honestly say that Ciara wouldn’t be here today without her life-saving flight,” said Laura. The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter is one of four under the Philips Search and Rescue Trust (PSRT). The PSRT is the largest rescue helicopter trust in New Zealand. As an essential service, rescue helicopters continue to operate under lockdown. The four PSRT helicopters; Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopters, TECT Rescue Helicopter, Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter, attended more than 40 missions during alert level four.

Returning to base

Last year the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter clocked up 414 missions PSRT media liaison Sharni Weir said the compact environment of a rescue helicopter brings unique challenges, and the threat of Covid-19 adds a layer of complexity. “It’s business still, as usual. We are as busy as ever and will always be there for patients in need. However, we have implemented extra layers of protection for both patients and crew. “Currently, every crew member is wearing a mask, coveralls and gloves during all flights. There are also flight barrier curtains that separate the front cabin from the rear cabin. “Our patients and crews’ safety and wellbeing are what is most important to us, so these initiatives have been put in place to ensure the safety of everyone onboard,” she said.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter is based at the Palmerston North Hospital

The current Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter is a Bolkow-Kawasaki BK-117, jointly developed and manufactured in Germany and Japan. “It is currently utilised by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter because of its exceptionality as an air medical and search and rescue utility,” said Sharni. “Possessing high stability and manoeuvrability, the BK-117’s speed and agility are enhanced by twin, 850 horsepower engines, precision aerodynamic blades weighing approximately 36kg, and a powerful flying speed of 220km/h. “The added benefit of a high-mounted tail boom and tail rotor enhances safety for crew, and ease of access for patients through the rear of the aircraft.” The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter is based at the Palmerston

Sharni said the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter is partially funded by a government contract. “For 2021, the budgeted cost of service delivery is $3.97 million. Around 70% of this comes from our government contract. The remainder comes from the support of sponsors and the generosity of the community.” Groups, clubs, schools and individuals hold a range of activities to raise funds for their local rescue helicopter. AG CONTRACTORS A knotty problem solved by Andy Bryenton

New Holland has come out on top of this year’s Edison Awards with a new twist on tying knots. It’s all about better baling and greater efficiency in the field. The humble knot is one of the earliest of human invention; an achievement for Cub Scouts, the key to building sailing ships, and, it seems, an issue for agriculture. Working out how to make a machine tie knots and thus make stable bales of hay was a big achievement back at the start of the mechanisation of farming. It was only this year that some of the basic kinks in bale knotting were worked out for good. New Holland premiered the first automatic baler in 1940 and has been trying to make these machines better, bigger and more robust ever since. In 2021, it introduced the BigBaler PLUS, which came equipped with LoopMaster technology. This new system of baling hay splices the two existing forms of knot-tying into one mechanical process. A double loop is used, meaning zero offcut twine getting back into the field to snarl up the

ecosystem or following machines. At the same time, the ties are tough and reliable, meaning it’s easier to handle the bales when they pop out of the chute. Carlo Lambro, New Holland brand president, was proud to take home the Edison Awards Gold Medal for this new concept. The awards are named for famous American inventor Thomas Alva Edison, a prolific technologist who invented the record player and the light bulb, among other items. “We are honoured to receive this recognition for our patented Loop Master technology, which brings significant cost and environmental benefits to our customers,” said Mr Lambro. “By recognising that bale quality is key to delivering maximum productivity and minimum waste, over the years, our team has been focussing its resources on how to

tensile strength, together with the high compression system of the new baler results in denser bales, optimising truck transport with more tonnage for each load. That means transporting fewer loads, further reducing the impact on the environment.

Pugging, resowing stance adapts by Andy Bryenton

Rural advocacy groups are supportive of the governments rollback of what had been called ‘unworkable’ legislation on pugging and resowing dates. The previous standards, set out as part of a broader range of environmental management targets for farmers, had been decried as over-legislative and unworkable, not only by protest groups such as Groundswell NZ but also industry monitors such as Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Now, these have been replaced with a more flexible environmental management approach. Details were included in a revised set of intensive winter grazing proposals, circulated for public consultation in late August. It’s an acknowledgement in principle that one size does not fit all. “We believe the government’s new proposed approach, which focusses on practical management by farmers, is more workable, and that’s progress,” said B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor when the new regulations were shared. “Nevertheless, we still have concerns around the proposed 10-degree slope rule for winter grazing and the certified freshwater farm plan process.” This separate part of the government’s farming plans aims to increase rural water purity. However, it has been marred by the roll-out of inaccurate mapping, which designated the wrong kinds of land

for fencing and livestock restrictions. Farming groups lobbied hard to have the inaccurate mapping rolled back. “The government has proposed an improvement on the slope rule, but we still think the approach is more restrictive than it needs to be to manage the environmental risks,” Mr McIvor said. “For example, we’d like to see flexibility in situations where there is no receiving water body nearby.” As with some other recent central government initiatives, such as the civic Three Waters concept, stakeholders in this regulation debate feel that there is a lack of data preventing them from tabling a solution. “Without having visibility of the exact text of the certified freshwater farm plan, and given the requirement to demonstrate environmental outcomes would be the same as the rules, we have reservations about how workable the proposed farm plan approach will actually be,” says Mr McIvor. “We are urging the government to work with industry on ensuring that the certified freshwater farm plan process is practical, effects-based and based on industry plans.”

Certainty for dairy industry workers by Andy Bryenton

This month has seen the government give some certainty to overseas workers who are doing their part for the New Zealand dairy industry during the Covid pandemic. The announcement allows many international dair y workers to become residents. It recognises their years of hard work on farms and positive contributions to dairying. It is the culmination of 18 months of collaborative work between Federated Farmers, the government and Dairy New Zealand to ensure a robust workforce to bolster the dairy sector. “We appreciate that the government has acknowledged the pressure farmers are under due to being short-staffed, and also recognise the critical role which international workers play,” said DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. “We are genuinely delighted for these workers and their families. Many dairy workers can now plan and look forward to a future in New Zealand with their families. Their contribution will assist the dairy sector to continue playing a key role in New Zealand’s economy.” The 2021 Residents Visa will be open to an estimated 4,000 dairy workers, which should go some way towards filling the staff shortages reported on many

farms around the country. DairyNZ put the figure of workers required at between two and four thousand. DairyNZ opines that many rural communities will benefit from these workers and their families formally becoming New Zealanders. As well

as their skilled labour and knowledge of dairy farming, there is the factor of population gain for isolated and small rural settlements. New citizens have families who will contribute to clubs and societies, bolster school rolls, support businesses and add diversity.

A winning combination

Ace offal cookers for dog and pig food, also available as grain cookers for horses

Big, powerful and brutal, the T-92 tank was the biggest deployed by the Allies in the second world war. With twin treads on each side and a gun so immense no turret could hold it, this monster was the equivalent of today’s gigantic open-field tractors. Look back in history, however, and it was the nimble little jeep that did more for victory. In the same way, small utility tractors are the all-purpose swiss army knives of the farming world, called into play to manoeuvre and work where their big brothers can’t go. A prime example of the breed is the long-established but still very versatile John Deere 3 series. It is not the smallest Deere in the shed, nor by far the biggest, but it’s been crafted to do two things with absolute aplomb. It’s easy to use and easy to adapt. Take the current 3038E, for example. It sits in a sweet spot for power and size, with four-wheel-drive for maximum traction in tight corners, a compact width to handle barn doors and farmyard gates, and a clutchless hydrostatic transmission, providing pedals for forward and reverse action. This last part is clever, as it unlocks the power of the 3038E’s Stage V diesel engine for the kind of jobs bigger tractors don’t usually get called on for. While a monster of the fields is made to plough ahead for hours at a time, its big mill ticking over to generate mountains of torque, a smaller machine will often be used to ferry feed about, unload trucks or tow a slasher.

Available in 63Litre and 94Litre, stainless steel bin on a tipping frame. Plugs into standard 230v socket. Fitted with 2 hour timer and neon. Have been in the market for over 30 years.

John Deere’s 3038e is a versatile machine that puts ease of operation to the fore

These are jobs that require a firm hand on the wheel and a quick shuttle between forward and reverse. Making it easy to wrangle the controls puts the 3038E in the zone where lifestyle block owners and all kinds of farmworkers can jump aboard and get to work intuitively. Here’s another neat trick. A half-press on the brake will activate the diff lock, meaning that everything’s on one foot for traversing mud and sloped terrain. The natural mate with this tractor is the 300e loader, but there’s no need to stop there. Like one of those modern

battery-powered yard tools with multiple heads, the 3038E can be fitted with a host of PTO powered implements to specialise its tasks. True to form, these are also elementary to hitch up, thanks to John Deere’s proprietary iMatch Quick-Hitch system. If you need utility around the farm, this versatile little machine could be just the ticket; it’s a whole lot of hard work, made easy in a small package.

Need a repair, upgrade or new tank?

Does your on-farm fuel tank comply with current safety standards? If it’s a tripod tank, then unfortunately, it won’t. Three legs can be pretty wobbly, and it’s no surprise that approval for the manufacture of this style of tank was cancelled at the end of the last century. What may come as a surprise, however, is that if you do have a tripod tank, you may find your current fuel supplier will soon stop supplying. In a recent national accord, most fuel distributors agreed that they would stop filling tripod tanks from the end of 2021. Some fuel distributors have already decided not to deliver fuel to new customers with tripod tanks. Naturally, this decision means many tank owners will need to look at a replacement schedule. If you need a new tank, you’ll want to find something that ticks the following boxes: • A cost-effective, standards approved tank • A ladder that incorporates a platform or a safety bar option

FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

• The tank fuel type embossed on the side of the pump box by the lockable nozzle • A vent filter and fuel filter to keep your fuel clean and avoid contamination from bugs, dirt, moisture or water Protanks come in above-ground and on-ground models ranging in size from 600L to 1,900L. They have the added advantage of being available in both single compartment or split compartment tanks, with the split tanks enabling you to store different types of fuel (petrol or diesel) side by side. All Protank tanks are impeccably built, thoroughly robust and approved by a registered compliance certifier. For more information and pricing, call 0800 477 134 or email sales@petrotec.co.nz. A journey through infrared photography by Denise Gunn

With her infrared camera in hand, photographer Cath Kelley explores the world through the unseen. Art always interested Cath, but it wasn’t until a friend lent her a digital camera that she began to discover photography. “I really enjoyed taking photos,” she said. “Family and friends told me they were quite good, but they might have been biased.” It was while talking to a friend in the US that Cath was first introduced to infrared photography. “I fell in love with the light spectrum. I tried to find information and courses online and spent a couple of months learning what I could about the physics of light waves and the light spectrum.” After talking to a friend who works as a scientist overseas, Cath was given some technical advice about the physics of the light spectrum, learning that infrared light waves travel at different speeds to visible light waves. She said infrared light waves travel at different speeds to visible light waves. “The colours I am able to tease out of the images are determined by multiple factors as the subject absorbs or reflects the infrared light. Understanding the physics of light waves, and using my skill as a photographer, I am able to capture

the world that sits just beyond our vision and capture images that invite you to get close, to touch them.” Rural Manawatū is Cath’s photography stomping ground. “The imagery I get is due to the beautiful scenery we have in the Manawatū. I’m always looking for beautiful scenery and focus predominantly on landscape.” Cath’s infrared photos are printed on premium cotton canvas and UV protected. “That allows the owner to touch, feel and become immersed in the world of infrared.” On entering her images in a couple of competitions, Cath received highlycommended awards. Her images were also accepted for the New Zealand Art Show in 2019. The show was a huge success for Cath, and she was invited back in 2020 and 2021. “I feel very humble that my passion and my hobby resonate with people.” Cath has also started to hold workshops and provide online teaching materials. “I really enjoy this particular genre of photography. I encourage people to follow their passion and not be held back.

Cath Kelley’s infrared images drew viewers in

“It’s been a journey for me to grow and evolve as an artist. I enjoy introducing people to what infrared photography is and what they are looking at.”

Cath’s infrared photography will be displayed during her exhibition at the Feilding Art Society from November 12 to December 2.

Death in challenging times The death of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult experiences. If you’ve lost someone you care about, we’d like to acknowledge your loss and the emotions you may be experiencing. Nothing is the same anymore. With everything that is happening in the world today, grief at this time can feel extremely isolating. You may feel disconnected from the rest of the world. Know that it’s not just you, and you are not alone. Grief is different for everyone; try not to judge yourself or compare yourself to others. Experiencing a loss during this Covid-19 pandemic brings additional challenges. Along with grieving, you are faced with the decision of whether to proceed with the funeral service without key family members or to wait a while and have a memorial service at a later date. For the past 18 months, we have been experiencing and meeting these new challenges and rules that are changing — sometimes on a daily basis. A ceremony to commemorate and celebrate a life is as important now as ever before. Some may say — more so than ever. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one and haven’t been able to have a funeral service at the time, we would encourage you to

think about having some sort of gathering to dedicate special time to have a structured farewell. Within us, we have an innate need to honour, respect and remember those who have died with the ritual of a service that is intentional and has meaning. Thankfully, today’s technology provides phone and social media platforms enabling us to offer us ways to connect and keep in touch, to share memories. At Beauchamp Funeral Home, every December, we host a Christmas Remembrance Service in our Palmerston North and Feilding chapels to remember anyone who has passed away in the 12 months prior. It is an informal gathering to enable us to come together and pay tribute to ‘our person’ in a safe and warm environment. After a year of lockdowns, it seems more important than ever to host the Christmas Service. We warmly welcome anyone who wishes to attend on December 14 and 15 2021. Please phone us on 0800 027 154 for further details.

Jewellery collection features native birds

by Denise Gunn

A special collection of necklaces featuring five native birds, have been produced by Whanganui-based jeweller, Emma Cunningham, to celebrate family business Cranfields’ 30th anniversary. Emma’s inspiration was drawn from nature and her concern with its preservation. As these values also align with those of Cranfields, a portion of the sale proceeds from this range will be donated to Zealandia Ecosanctuary. Emma said the dawn chorus is such a special start to every day. “Each necklace has been designed to emphasise the sacred nature of these birds, which are absolute treasures of the forest.” The necklaces are handmade from vintage silverware, sand-cast brass, pewter and copper, and natural freshwater pearls hand-knotted onto natural silk thread. From a young age, Emma has held an interest in art. In 1995 she completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in printmaking. The following year she was commissioned to make a public art sculpture in south Taranaki. Funds from this commission enabled her to travel to England and study at the Frink School of Sculpture. Valerie Cranfield established the home interior and giftware business in Wellington in 1991. She is now assisted by her daughter, Nicola. Since opening its doors, Cranfields has stocked handcrafted, bespoke New Zealand products. Nicola discovered Emma three years ago when visiting her downtown studio in

Whanganui. This chance meeting became a defining moment, which allowed Emma’s business to grow. Nicola sees the bird necklaces as a perfect collection for Cranfields’ 30th anniversary. “I see this as not only an opportunity for us at Cranfields but an opportunity to showcase really special homegrown talent, with wonderful stories about how and why these makers have chosen to create products as they do,” she said. Emma works from her studio in a rural valley on the outskirts of Whanganui.

“Zealandia is an iconic part of our community, and this is another way of supporting local. The conservation work they do is inspiring. It’s only fitting that the native birds that have inspired this line of jewellery benefit as well.”

Search for the stars

Scotts

Performers will be reaching for the stars as part of the upcoming Manawatū Star Search youth talent quest. The competition, geared for youth 8 to 18 years, encompasses all forms of music, dance and drama. Director Allan Williams said it is an opportunity for these contestants to perform in front of a panel of judges. If selected, contestants are invited to participate and showcase their talents at a finals concert in front of a new set of judges and a paying audience. Manawatū Star Search is divided into junior, intermediate and senior age groups. Each age group is then split into solo/duo and group of three or more. “Cash prizes are made to the most promising performance in each category and age group, and there is also a People’s Choice Award.” Although the talent quest is aimed primarily at Manawatū youth, entries are received from the Rangitikei, Horowhenua and Wairarapa areas. All contestants pay a small entrance audition fee. “We have a panel of four judges for the auditions and a new panel of judges for the finals concert,” said Allan. All judges are professionals and experienced in each of the disciplines they assess. Manawatū Star Search is an offshoot of Reach for the Stars, which began as a youth project in 1999. The late Pat

The growers’ challenge

by Ann van Engelen

Spring is here, and National Gardening Week will be running from October 18–25, with this year’s theme across the country being Grow to Give.

People across the country are encouraged to be involved in National Gardening Week and grow vegetables to share with others in their community

“While some Kiwis are enjoying homegrown vegetables, many are going without altogether,” says Yates spokesperson Fiona Arthur. “This National Gardening Week, people are being encouraged to grow-an-extrarow to share with neighbours, community pantries, food banks and other local food donation agencies. “Popping a few extra seeds in the dirt does not require much effort but could mean so much for another family in need. “To help get your extra row underway, Yates is lending a helping hand. When you register online at yates.co.nz/national-

gardening-week between October 1 and 25, you will receive a free packet of vegetable seeds.” Anyone can grow a garden, no matter how large or small the space. “Encourage family members to give growing some veggies a go,” says Integrity Community Media’s garden columnist Liz Clark. “Sharing extra produce from the garden with others is rewarding and reduces food waste. Have a look in the shed for some of those unused pots from the nursery, fill them up with some container and vegetable mix and sow a seed or two.

Integrity Community Media has a Yates veggie gardening hamper to be won as part of the upcoming National Gardening Week initiative

“Green vegetables such as lettuce, mini cauliflower, spinach and eggplants will grow quite happily provided they have enough space. Water regularly and feed with a liquid fertiliser for thriving plants. “It is also a great way to get the children involved and take pride in sharing what they have grown with others.” Once you have grown your veggies to share, please visit the Yates website to find a list of the organisations in your area that would welcome your donation of fresh homegrown produce. “National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing

not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature,” Ms Arthur said. “Whether it is a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening.” Integrity Community Media has a Yates gardening hamper to give away valued at $300. The pack includes a variety of veggie seeds, both new and some old favourites and other gardening products. To be in to win, tell us who you will be sharing your produce with and why at comp@integrity.nz.

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: October

G J Sole Transport is a large familyowned business that has been serving the greater Taranaki and King Country areas since 1965. Graeme Sole started the business with a bulldozer and a transporter. Developing farmland and logging was a big part of the business, which involved putting in tracks, clearing land with root rakes for the Lands and Survey block. G J Sole Transport was also involved with the first shipment of export logs from Westgate (Port Taranaki) in 1967. The logging side of the business has become more intensive since 1992, starting with the involvement of the

export of logs from the New Plymouth port. This included purchasing woodlots from farmers, supplying logging gangs and heavy equipment to harvest the trees, transporting logs to the port, working in conjunction with NZ Stevedores, and later John Ray Ltd while supplying loaders and logging trucks to load log boats. During the same period, involvement in the selective helicopter logging industry of native timber started, with the company supplying loader and logging trucks to transport the logs from helicopter dump sites to rail heads and sawmills throughout the North Island. This often involved

working in extremely remote and difficult areas. Over the years the company has evolved to include heavy equipment transporting of over dimensional steel products, concrete panels, drilling equipment and rig shifts. It isn’t uncommon for these loads to weigh in excess of 80 ton. Many of these loads require pilot vehicles due to their oversize nature and sometimes tricky travel routes. The logging operation in Taranaki purchases and harvests woodlots for the domestic market, supplying local sawmills such as Taranaki Pine and

pulp to Carter Holt Harvey at Kinleith. This business has developed with Allan Sole presently running his own logging crews under Sole Logging and Graeme now focusing on the transport side of the business. In 2021 the logging fleet has grown to include 37 logging trucks and 3 bin trucks as well as 12 general transport, tipper, and heavy haulage trucks. G J Sole Transport is a business that has and will continue to serve the greater Taranaki and King Country areas for many years to come. GJ Sole Transport are Taranaki local and available for all your log and heavy equipment cartage needs!

Will you plant 7 trees a day? As a sector forestry and wood processing is leading the way in New Zealand for achieving the Government’s zero carbon economy. In addition to the obvious environmental benefits forestry delivers, the sector can generate employment like no other. Already supporting approximately 30,000 jobs in New Zealand, there is capacity to increase this significantly.

processing sector is already at least 70% self-sufficient (using the biomass from wood waste). Effectively, our sector runs a large scale bioenergy generator that has a great capacity to substitute for fossil fuels. As large scale companies such as Fonterra transition away from fossil fuels to wood based fuels for drying milk power, there is increasing demand for fibre within our own country and the future for this is bright.

In terms of energy, the NZ wood

trap and hold carbon in building over the long term. Although to our sorrow, New Zealand does not yet acknowledge this environmental performance in the NZ Building Code or in with “Wood First” policies. Chances are your house is storing about 9 tons of carbon. (the average for a family home) Did you know that to drive your fossil fuelled car and offset average travel for one day, you need to plant 7 trees

Forestry has demonstrated that in New Zealand we have the right climate and land types to grow some the best and fastest softwood plantations in the world. We’ve proven we can make low emission and biodegradable alternatives to less environmentally friendly products. Wood is good!

ADVERTORIAL

Do your own research by Jane Gray

Why should you do your own research? It’s simple, really; you get the answers you are looking for. Let’s stop using social media as a credible place for information. When Facebook, for instance, first came to light, it was a great way to keep in touch with what friends and family were doing. I have a lot of family overseas, so it was lovely to connect with them like this. Like everything, there is an evaluation period. The platform became a space for those to put everything up online, such as what they eat at a restaurant or what they were thinking at that moment. Unfortunately, some of that evaluation has become toxic in the extreme; radical content and just so many untruths that people seem to believe. Ask someone where they got their information from, and you can just about guarantee they will say social media. Community groups have become the playground for vehement opinions rather than what they were actually designed for. I go to a community group to see what is happening in the area, not to be told I’m

an idiot because I choose to be vaccinated or I support a particular political view. Social media is a great tool when used properly, but if you are relying on it to get well-rounded and considered advice — that is never going to happen. Social media is fed by individuals with their own agendas. The research will always be slanted to their viewpoint and often bears no resemblance to real life. I am often amazed about how abusive people get on Facebook should someone disagree with their particular viewpoint. If you put a point of view up for the public to see, why are you then so offended when some disagree with that point of view and why does it have to become abusive? Then get even more offended when that post with all of its radical commentary is taken down by the administration for being found untrue. In order to get good quality research make sure that it has been peer-reviewed by people qualified in that field. It’s more likely to be a well-rounded document when others have looked at it.

The importance of minerals by John Arts

In the last edition, I commented that most multi-style supplements over-promise but underdeliver. That is because most are formulated as a ‘one a day’ supplement and are often filled with too many B vitamins yet lack the minerals and antioxidants we need. Outright mineral deficiencies cause disease but of much greater importance is the number of diseases linked to sub-optimal minerals in our diet. Sub-optimal means less than our bodies need. If I could do an experiment it would be to give all New Zealanders a comprehensive multimineral, multivitamin and antioxidant and observe health patterns during a long period of time. I would not be surprised to see reductions in most chronic diseases. Farmers are very aware of the mineral deficiencies in our soil. I spoke to a farming client recently and he commented on the improvements to animal health when they added selenium and other minerals. He said the sheep went from being lethargic to full of energy. It is a real tragedy that we do not incorporate such advice

into human health. Perhaps the issue is that, unlike livestock, humans do not have a productivity value. When I recently reformulated my Cell-X multi-nutritional supplement, I took great care to ensure that minerals, like selenium and zinc, were at levels that support optimal health. Our immune system, indeed the health of every cell, requires these minerals to produce powerful enzymes that protect our cells, including immune cells, from damage and disease. I offer you a challenge. Take a good multi-nutritional supplement like Cell-X for three months and notice the difference. Most talk about more energy, better immunity, especially in winter and just feeling well. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. From science to solution by Andy Bryenton

Water use on dairy farms has come under the microscope in recent years, and dry summers across much of the nation have done their part to make agricultural researchers seek a better method of managing water.

The science of separating water from solids has led to a big advancement in dairy industry water saving, as well as helping manage slurry application and holding volumes

figures; a Clear Tech system reduced freshwater consumption by 2,885,700 litres per year, recycling 66% of FDE. Could this breakthrough in science, converted to a practical system, be the future of water-saving for the dairy sector? If so, it’s a home-grown idea that could change the world.

E Coli was slashed by 99%. Effectively, FDE was converted to settled, solid sediment and reusable water ready for further washdowns. Ag company Ravensdown then asked a pertinent question about turning this science into a practical system. What if FDE water could be treated and reused without fear of contamination or risk to the environment? The difference would amount to a potential total reduction in freshwater use on dairy farms of up to 42 billion litres a year. Working alongside Lincoln University, they developed a system called Clear Tech to make this technology available to farmers. A field test at Greenpark dairy farm in the South Island delivered real-world

Polarize

One core area where a breakthrough was needed was in the treatment of farm dairy effluent (FDE). Washing down yards and sheds is a large water cost; 70 litres per cow a day is the accepted average. The resulting FDE is 99% water, with a load of only one per cent solid waste material. If a way could be found to recycle the water while separating the waste, massive gains could be realised. Enter a scholarly paper from 2018 by Keith C Cameron & Hong J Di. These researchers hit upon a solution; flocculation. This term means, in layman’s language, making the solid matter clump up and settle to the bottom of a tank via gravity. By using a coagulant, a substance that promotes this process, solid waste in FDE could be encouraged to ‘floc together’. To say that experiments on this idea (using polyferric sulfate, safe for human consumption) was successful is an understatement. “The new method of treating FDE was highly successful in removing the colloidal material and producing clarified water that can be recycled to wash the farmyard,” say Cameron and Di. Turbidity in the treated FDE was reduced by 97%, and the presence of
