Last year was a challenging season for the rural sector. IHC’s Calf and Rural Scheme took a hit from Mycoplasma bovis, losing half its usual income. A large proportion of IHC’s programmes are not government-funded, so donations are essential for IHC to continue working in the community. IHC national fundraising manager Greg Millar is hoping farmers will now pledge a lamb or sheep to support children and adults with an intellectual disability in rural communities. “For more than 35 years, it’s been the dairy farmers who have given such generous support to the IHC Calf and Rural Scheme,” he said. “We simply couldn’t have done the work we do without their support, and we’re hoping New Zealand’s sheep farmers will join us too in this new Lamb Programme.” Farmers can pledge a physical lamb or sheep via the IHC website ihc.org. nz/lamb or advise a lamb has been set aside for IHC at saleyards. Other supporters of the programme can donate a virtual lamb for $150 through the same website. IHC acknowledges the sponsorship support and promotion that AgriVantage will provide to the Lamb Programme —

up to $25,000 this year. This amount will be the result of a $1 sponsorship from every 20kg bag of Sprayfo Primo Lamb milk replacer sold around the country. AgriVantage is the animal nutrition division of Chemiplas (NZ) Limited. AgriVantage’s national business manager Warren Tanner said IHC does important work in supporting people with intellectual disabilities in communities all around New Zealand. “We know that M bovis has negatively impacted the calf scheme and therefore, their fundraising efforts. “We saw an opportunity for AgriVantage to help make up some of the deficit and hopefully even exceed the IHC’s fundraising targets. “We’re encouraging lamb rearers and sheep farmers to pledge a lamb or two to IHC’s Lamb Programme this season. “Together with our farming communities, we hope to raise a total of $40,000 to help fund the work of IHC.” Awareness of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities is raised through IHC’s charitable activities. These include an extensive advocacy programme, a one-to-one volunteer programme and the country’s largest specialist intellectual disability library.

Horizons Regional Council is calling for more landowners to sign up to its Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI) and undertake further action on erosion-prone land. At June’s catchment operations committee, councillors made changes to eligibility criteria for SLUI to provide more options for landowners to take advantage of available funding. Horizons catchment operations committee chair David Cotton said the changes are timely with the central government looking at new policies around land use and freshwater management. He said a report received at a recent meeting outlined all the positive work done through SLUI and Horizons’ land programme as a whole. “Over the past year alone 570 erosion control jobs were completed, with landowners undertaking over 3,600 hectares of erosion control work. It included planting 2.3 million trees and establishing 156km of fencing,” said Cr Cotton. “Our funding can contribute towards these activities as well as sediment traps, reversion of land in pasture to native cover and retiring of existing bush remnants. SLUI is definitely a great mechanism to assist with works onfarm to help landowners move towards evolving regulation.” Horizons group manager natural resources and partnerships Dr Jon Roygard said Horizons can now offer funding for one-off jobs on farms that do not have an SLUI whole farm plan

and have further funding available for properties with existing SLUI and Whanganui Catchment Strategy whole farm plans. “These new funding avenues will make it a lot easier for landowners to be part of the SLUI programme,” he said. “SLUI builds farm resilience to storms and helps improve water quality by keeping sediment out of streams and rivers. The programme has been very successful over the 12 years it has been underway, establishing over 740 whole farm plans across an area of 552,000 hectares and completing 36,000 hectares of erosion control work.” Dr Roygard said Horizons has secured $6.4 million for the next four years from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ hill country erosion fund and is working to increase the amount of work on the ground further. “To assist in this, council has changed the criteria to enable landowners without a whole farm plan to be eligible for support for erosion control work on priority land. The programme is seeking to deliver 90,000 hectares of new whole farm plans and 13,665 hectares of erosion control work over the next four years, so now is the time to take advantage of what SLUI has to offer.” “We’re here to help with both funding and advice. I encourage any landowners who are considering being involved,

including those with existing whole farm plans, to contact Horizons’ land team via slui@horizons.govt.nz or freephone 0508 800 800 to discuss it further.” To find out more information about SLUI and the funding criteria, visit horizons.govt.nz. Since SLUI began, more than 16 million trees have been planted, and

Horizons has established relationships with more than 740 landowners to develop whole farm plans across 552,000 hectares, representing above half the highly erodible land in the region. To date, more than 36,0000 hectares of erosion control works have been completed.

Sparking a beehive business by Denise Gunn

It was a road trip around the South Island in 2007 that triggered Paul Jenkin’s interest in beehives.

“W

e kept seeing beehives everywhere, and the idea took hold that it might be an interesting thing to do,” said Paul. Soon after the road trip, Paul completed a short beekeeping course at Christchurch Polytechnic. His first two hives arrived in September the same year. Paul’s success as a hobby beekeeper saw him end up with more hives than he initially planned. It spurred him into taking the plunge into full-time beekeeping in 2015, leaving his career in the television reception industry. “I’m running around 60 hives at present, very small scale compared to most commercial beekeeping operations, but the business model is quite different too.” Through his business, Hives Manawatu, Paul has a mixture of rental

hives in backyards and lifestyle blocks, as well as a few honey production sites on farms. Most of these are within close proximity to Palmerston North, Feilding and Ashhurst. Paul said with every season’s honey harvest being a complete unknown — it is very difficult to forecast income for the year. “This is one of the primary reasons we are offering the hive rentals, rather than solely going down the honey production route most beekeepers take. It gives us a more reliable cash flow throughout the year. “Hive rental clients usually have their own interest in bees, as well as pollination of fruit trees and gardens, and receiving honey from their back yard.” As the number and density of hives in New Zealand continue to rise, finding

ideal sites is becoming increasingly difficult. Although Hives Manawatu is often offered sites for honey production hives, there are generally too many other hives in the area and not enough food around to support more. “Urban beekeeping is a little different as there is a lot more variety of plants in backyards, so there can be a lot more food for the bees.” Paul chose to use the Italian honeybee species, Apis mellifera ligustica, as he has found they are generally less inclined to swarm and ideal for back yard hives. “We also try to take genetics from breeding lines that are less defensive — this is also good for back yard hives.” The seasonal routine at Hives Manawatu kicks off with spring checks in August and September. Honey extraction is undertaken in February and March followed by preparing the hives for winter in March and April. Hives Manawatu produces honey in small regional batches where the hives are located. Paul said the differences in honey from slightly different areas can be quite amazing. “We recently had a French wine sommelier do tasting notes for the five honey types we’re currently selling. He was amazed at the variety of flavours between them.” In the previous season, from some of their newer production sites, Hives Manawatu achieved a bumper harvest. “We had to extract and store the honey in 300kg drums

instead of the 30kg buckets we’ve been using up to now, while still keeping to our small batch philosophy of how we mix honey batches. Seeing those kinds of volumes brought home how far we’ve grown in the last couple of years. “We also love to see our rental clients take the step of getting hives for themselves, and being able to mentor many of them through their first season is really rewarding too.” With an increase in the number of people making beeswax food wraps, Hives Manawatu has seen a surge in the demand for beeswax too. Paul finds bees to be endlessly fascinating creatures. “They respond to so many different environmental factors that no two seasons are ever the same. Just when you think you have a handle on what to do in a given situation, they’ll do something else, and you have to rethink what you were planning to do. There’s no such thing as a boring day when you’re dealing with bees.” Upgrading honey processing systems is Paul’s current focus as this will allow Hives Manawatu to produce more inhouse. It will also assist with selling retail packs of honey through their website and other retailers. “We want to keep growing and expanding the retail and e-commerce side of the business, and have plans to add a few value-added products to the honey and beeswax we have at present.”

FARMING CULTIVATES WORK ETHIC BY DENISE GUNN A family background built on agriculture has given Graham Johnson an immense passion for the industry.

G

raham grew up on his family’s deer, dairy, sheep and beef farm in the Waikato. Although he gave consideration to an aviation career, Graham was always keen on agriculture due to the vast opportunities available in the industry. He said working outdoors, and the agricultural lifestyle is enjoyable and rewarding. “I particularly enjoy working with livestock, especially deer.” As a former Hamilton Boy’s High School student, Graham was involved with the TeenAg Club, competing in two TeenAg grand finals. He became club chair of his TeenAg Club, the TeenAg representative on the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty regional committee

and the regional representative on a TeenAg national committee. Graham also competed in stock judging and has continued to do this as a Young Farmer member. Following his move to Palmerston North for study two years ago, he joined the Massey Young Farmers Club. Graham appreciates the people and friendships formed. “The ability to network with likeminded people,” he said. Towards the end of 2018, Graham won a Young Farmers district competition, earning a spot in this year’s Taranaki/ Manawatu regional final. Graham has also set a goal to try winning the FMG Young Farmer of the Year title before he turns 31.

When Graham isn’t busy studying at Massey University, he works weekends on a Mangatainoka farm

University breaks are spent helping out on his family’s farm near Te Awamutu “The competition has a lot of prestige associated with it,” he said. “It takes a lot of effort to make it to the top, but the rewards are immense. The competition opens the door to significant opportunities and allows you to meet new people.” When the third-year Bachelor of Agricultural Science student isn’t hitting the books at Massey University, he’s working weekends on a Mangatainoka sheep and beef farm. University breaks are spent working on the family farm near Te Awamutu. Graham’s parents ensured their children grew up with a strong work ethic, helping out on the farm.

“I could put out a break-fence before I started school,” said Graham. As he grew older, Graham took on more responsibilities around the farm. “I learnt just as much as I could growing up, I have always loved stock work, mustering stock and working with them in the yards.” he said. Growing up on the farm also gave Graham an opportunity to ride horses from a young age. “From what I’m told, I would have been about two to three years old. I used to get a horse to stand next to the garden fence, and I would climb up the fence and climb on, without any tack on at all.”

Nine years ago Graham took up polocrosse. As a Putaruru-Tirau club member, he competed most weekends in polocrosse carnivals all around the North Island. Polocrosse is played on a field measuring 55mx146m and split into three sections. Each polocrosse team has six players, separated into two sections of three team members. Players use a loose thread net to carry the ball with the aim of scoring goals between the opposing team’s goalposts. For now, Graham’s university studies have put a temporary halt to competing. “I haven’t played much in the last few years,I’m looking forward to playing more once finished with uni.” he says. Graham’s horse, ScoobyDoo, is an 11-year-old Quarterhorse/ Thoroughbred gelding. “He has a very awesome nature to him; very chilled out and relaxed.” With completing his degree and graduation on the horizon, Graham is looking at different options for the future. “Potentially to travel overseas and farm somewhere else in the world; to see how good we really have it here in New Zealand,” he said. Scholarship winners announced

Silver Fern Farms has awarded six young people from around New Zealand with Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. This year’s applicants were asked to explore the issues of sustainability in the red meat sector, and then present their solutions for farms, processing and in-market. Silver Fern Farms chief executive Simon Limmer said it is clear that there is a real belief from these young people in the future for our natural grass-fed red meat. “We want to thank all of the applicants who put forward their ideas. It has been great to hear the innovative ideas and passion from young people who have their sights set firmly on creating a sustainable future for the red meat sector. Through our scholarship programme, we are creating pathways for young people to have a rewarding career in our industry.” During three years, Silver Fern Farms has invested $90,000 into the programme, supporting 18 young people. Mr Limmer believes this is working as one of the inaugural scholarship recipients is now on the Silver Fern Farms graduate programme. “During the course of the three years, we have supported their ambitions to help the red meat industry with ideas ranging from industry biosecurity challenges, the development of food technology processes to extend the shelf life and flavor of red meat, regenerative cropping, selling the

story of New Zealand’s natural artisan agriculture to the world, as well as challenging the industry to think big and be bold.” This year’s scholarship recipients William Robertson (upper North Island), Lucy Rowe (western North Island), Phoebe Topp (eastern North Island), Teagan Graham (upper South Island), Matthew Day (lower South Island) and Kate Denzel (Judge’s choice) each received $5,000 to go toward their careers in the red meat sector. Applicants require a Silver Fern Farms Co-operative shareholder to support their bid for a scholarship. That gives farmer shareholders the opportunity to encourage young people who want to progress their careers in the red meat sector. Silver Fern Farms co-chair Rob Hewett was pleased to present the scholarships in front of 300 farmer suppliers and shareholders at Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture conference in Christchurch. “The Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships are always a highlight for us,” said Mr Hewett. “Discovering the passion and talent emerging in our communities gives us great confidence that the future of farming and the communities where we live and work, is safe in the hands of our young leaders.”

Rushed law won’t be good law by Ian Mckelvie, MP

The coalition government is causing a lot of anxiety and uncertainty for the rural sector right now, mainly due to the hurry they seem to be in to create change. I am convinced that this change if carefully thought through and properly managed, could be achieved in a timely fashion with much better results for our farmers and everyone in rural communities. I have listened to many and read a large number of the submissions on the Climate Change Response (Carbon Zero) Amendment bill, and I am not convinced that very many have any understanding of the effect of such proposed legislation would have on rural communities if left unchanged. It’s all very well for us to lead the world in change, but we must take the rest of the world with us on the journey. Let’s all aim to ensure we end up with a piece of legislation all sectors can all live with. Without that, there will be no Emissions Trading Scheme and no certainty for our primary production sector, which let’s not forget, provides around two-thirds of New Zealand’s cash receipts. This government is rushing through this bill by hearing some 1,100 submissions using subcommittees

Q UA L I T Y U S E D S TO C K

of the Environment Select Committee. To me, that’s a bit of an insult to the significant number of people who have put so much time into their submissions. It is happening all too often of late as this government rush to catch up for ‘lost time’ for the early part of their term when they obviously had little or nothing prepared. For a government that says it cares, it’s continually showing it cares little for people, for transparency or for the security of our economy, which judging by the actions of the Reserve Bank, where it dropped the OCR by 50 basis points — we could be fast-moving into troubled waters.

New CEO for Vets New Zealand Veterinary Association president Dr Peter Blaikie has announced former industry training organisation leader Kevin Bryant has been appointed NZVA chief executive officer. Mr Bryant will join the NZVA on September 23 and will be based at the NZVA’s Wellington office. “Kevin brings a wealth of leadership experience in similar organisations over a number of years. I’m delighted he will join us during a critical time of change and growth for the organisation,” said Dr Blaikie. “Kevin has demonstrated in numerous roles that he is a great people leader. He has an excellent understanding of leading industry organisations through times of growth and change. His leadership skills will be put to good use in the near future as we progress our change project. “He led the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation for more than 10 years and was founding CEO of the Primary Industry Training Organisation, which merged training organisations from several diverse sectors to create New Zealand’s largest industry training organisation.” Prior to joining the NZVA, he led a programme at Corrections New Zealand that brought together industry organisations and companies to create work opportunities in prisons, help prisoners develop vocational skills and connect them with job opportunities upon their release from prison. He says he is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. “I have always thought of veterinarians as occupying a special place as trusted advisers in the communities they

A pain in the … by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)

The best part of what I do is to hear back from clients who have less pain and more mobility. If you are in pain, the first step should be a visit to your health practitioner for an accurate diagnosis. For the next few editions, we will look at the most common causes of pain and the measures we can take to help. In all cases, these measures are designed to help restore your body’s natural healing processes, which can be greatly affected by disease. Most pain is either caused or worsened by tissue inflammation. For example, in osteoarthritis, the immune system response to cartilage loss is inflammation. It can cause fluid accumulation, swelling, loss of function and invariably pain. An anti-inflammator y diet combined with well-formulated supplements can help. My preference is to have equal amounts of chondroitin and glucosamine with a potent curcumin (turmeric) extract and solid doses of fish oils. Of these chondroitin, sulphate is the most important as it helps support several joint healing processes damaged by arthritis. In most cases, I start with 1,600mg of chondroitin and glucosamine plus

curcumin to help improve cartilage function. Chondroitin is so effective that it is now available in Europe on prescription. During the past six months, I have been helping a man in his 70s with long-term knee osteoarthritis with some damage from his rugby years. He was really struggling with pain and mobility and in his own words is now 95% better. All he has now is a few niggles. The key is to use multiple measures that target the processes that help maintain healthy joints. The answer is not diet or supplements. The answer is to stimulate dormant healing processes overwhelmed by degenerative changes to joints. Your body does the rest. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. CROP & PASTURE PREP The will, the skill and the drill by Andy Bryenton

With 2.7 billion tonnes of edible crops grown worldwide across 2.1 billion acres, utilising more than nine billion dollars worth of specialist planting equipment, the relationship between modern farming and the seed drill is a serious one. The quest for accuracy in seed placement and the coaxial placement of vital nutrients and fertilisers have seen some sophisticated machines surface. It’s fair to say that there are none like the CX-6, by Canadian firm Clean Seed. With no less than 17 new patents covering aspects of its design, the CX-6 is a monster of a seed drill, a rolling test-lab for future undersowing and precise seed placement technologies. While its immense, 35-tonne bulk is best suited to the wide-open fields of the American north and midwest, the lessons learned and the tech innovations developed for the CX-6 may well pave the way for implements that work better on Kiwi farms as well. It began with the realisation by some farmers that while pneumatic seed drills are faster than the old box drills of yesteryear, having all the seed

come from a central hopper can cause bunching and clumping, or seed rolling and bouncing in the trench. The aim of the CX-6 is just that; to precisely aim every single seed and its little package of fertiliser like a bullet into the soil, at a very precise depth. Digital metering was the key, and a series of smaller secondary seed and fertiliser holding tanks atop each row. Farmers can be as creative as they wish with mixtures of seed and nutrient, as they are pre-mixed right before they go down the chute and hit the soil. There are 360 individual precisely controlled electric motors in the CX-6 set-up, all controlled wirelessly from the tractor cab.

That’s 360 different possible combinations across the entire machine each second, as a spiked coulter opens the earth and a precision placement head follows on, dropping in the product. With six tanks to combine from, the CX-6 can blend fertiliser components such as potassium and nitrogen, for example, to

suit not just different fields, but different areas in the same field according to prerecorded soil data. In fact, the precision of Clean Seed’s technology is such, that for once, it’s the IT field that’s racing to catch up, with programs able to display the true resolution of the precision seeder’s operation.

Heavy duty with a light tread

by Andy Bryenton

When John Deere began work on their 9RX series of large, powerful tractors, they committed to starting with the customer and working backwards. Rather than producing the biggest and most powerful four-wheel-drive machine possible, they asked what contractors and farmers wanted from a high-output tractor.

The answer was less about raw power and more about a reduced footprint, both literally and figuratively. Exceeding strict emissions standards, consuming less fuel and additive, and spreading the weight of the machine to have less impact on the substrate of the soil during operations were all core factors plumbed in from day one. The difference, therefore, is not in the size of the 9RX, which is available either as a four-wheel-drive variant or as a wide-tracked ‘crawler’, but in its performance figures. Under the hood, John Deere has partnered up with Cummins, one of the top diesel engine manufacturers in the world, selecting their X15 turbo diesel as the top of the range power plant for the nine series. This 15-litre engine comes equipped with an electronically actuated, infinitely variable boost turbocharger and advanced exhaust recirculation technology, filtration and selective catalytic reduction to cut particulate matter output down to near zero. Despite its size, the big X15 is economical,

tackling the seriously big jobs and handling seriously big implements with effortless reserves of torque. Outside, it’s all utility, with ease of access for maintenance another key takeaway from farmers, now plumbed into the design of the biggest Deere. There’s a versatile three-point hitch and 1,000 rpm PTO to hook up with even the largest of harrows, seed drills or bale and silage ordnance, but the eye is drawn, at least on the 9620RX model, to those triangular treads with their innovative suspension system. This system increases the contact patch of the whole machine, spreading the weight and achieving a twofold outcome; less disruption and compaction of the soil, and a smooth ride for the operator, who also enjoys the benefits of the very comfortable and well laid out CommandView III series cab. Lessons from making this giant John Deere step lightly will no doubt flow through to the rest of their range as well, making it a fitting flagship for the green and yellow brand.

Highlighting student skills A new competition has been launched to test the farming skills of students at Massey University in Palmerston North. The country’s largest NZ Young Farmers club, Massey Young Farmers, will run the inaugural Rural Student of the Year on August 22 with 21 agricultural students at Massey University clash in a series of agri-food challenges. “The competition will be similar to the qualifying events for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year,” said club chair Megan Robertson. “There will be seven practical farmingbased modules focused on stock handling, dairying, farm mechanics, agribusiness skills, tractor driving, fencing and culinary skills. Our ultimate aim for this competition is to help our club members learn new skills, test their abilities and build their confidence. “It is also a fantastic way to expose other students on campus to NZ Young Farmers and the fun side of the agrifood sector.” The modules will be followed by a quiz, and the top five competitors will go head to head in a short speech competition at the Masonic Hotel. The winner of the inaugural Massey Young Farmers Rural Student of the Year will be announced after the results are tallied. “We hope that after giving our event a go, participants will be more willing and inclined to enter the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year,” said the vice-chair of Massey Young Farmers,

Sixties and beyond

by Ann van Engelen

The golden years of life are a time when although you no longer work as such, many people still do, and social activity options can be many or few. For many people, turning 65 years old is a time of new possibilities and opportunities, yet for others, retirement is less likely to mean withdrawing from full-time paid work. They continue in paid or volunteer work or many reasons. These could be financial considerations, or because they want to contribute, be occupied and connected to their community. If you are still in paid work, you can still receive your NZ superannuation if you are eligible while earning an income. Your earnings, plus your super, may be taxed at a higher rate. More information is available from Work and Income for each individual situation. Older workers may worry that employers will not value them or discriminate against them because of their age, but there is a skills shortage and employers have much to gain by employing older people. Employers are looking for experienced, loyal and reliable workers to meet the skills shortage and the older generation often bring a strong work ethic and productivity to a company. There are

many social activities you can take part in during the golden years. Probus, gardening clubs, RSAs, sports, sailing and volunteering are just some options. A range of community organisations relies on volunteers. Volunteer NZ is an organisation that matches a person with the various opportunities available in your area that suits your interests and skills. Age Concern also has information on how you can get involved in their Accredited Visiting Service if you have an hour or so a week to spare and would like to volunteer to spend time with another older person. Getting out of the house to socialise with others when you can, breaks up the monotony of a sometimes everyday routine. Travel is another option that the older generation can often be involved. Whether a cruise, overseas or local travel, being on the move and discovering new places can help not just add spark to your life but create new friendships and interests in activities that you may not have been able to participate in during the younger years.

Save Lives

The town of Fielding is named for a textbook example of the Victorian ‘gentleman explorer’. William Henry Adelbert Feilding was one of the few British dignitaries to visit the town named after him here in New Zealand, and when he did, he won the people over at a difficult time. Fielding came from wealth, the younger son of the Earl of Denbigh, a landowner high in the British aristocracy. As was the tradition in those days, only the eldest would inherit both title and lands; younger sons were sent to the army, navy, church clergy and government respectively. It was young William’s fate to join the military, and he did so at a turbulent time when Britain was engaged in many struggles. He fought in the Crimean War, scene of the heroic and doomed ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’, and was then nominated as British attache to the French forces in the Franco-Prussian war. During this conflict, he made a name for himself as a hero. Under heavy fire, and to save the wounded of an army and a nation, not his own, Fielding helped clear out a burning hospital, sparing many lives. In modern times he may have received the Victoria Cross, but that decoration was a the time reserved for those specifically fighting in the British Army. Instead, the French general, Chanzy, awarded Fielding on the battlefield with France’s most prestigious medal, the Legion of Honour. His commanders did not miss the irony that this medal was first minted by

Napoleon, in the not too distant past when France and England were at war. Moreover, they also didn’t miss such bravery. Fielding was given a government position and told to go to the colonies and found a town. Interestingly, his first port of call was Australia, so in a very real sense the town of Fielding could have popped up over the Tasman. However, the man himself was unimpressed by the Australian government, and instead came here, where he received a warmer welcome. Both from the powers that be, and apparently from the mosquitoes; he

was said to have finished surveying the site of the town to bear his name in slippers, as he was allergic to the little insects’ bites and had swollen feet. He returned in 1875 and gave a rousing speech to the new settlers, many of whom were suffering after a long and muddy winter. The veteran of many campaigns and battles gave the settlers hope and the promise that their hard work would pay off, and it certainly did. When he came again in 1895, now a full general, the town carrying his name was a thriving local centre, as it continues to this day.

SPOTLIGHT ON FEILDING

Fielding’s Edwardian reign by Andy Bryenton

Although the town of Fielding was founded during the heyday of Queen Victoria, there’s a definite difference to the architecture of this picturesque Kiwi town, which has seen it win no less than 14 awards as the nation’s most beautiful. Sandwiched in history between the baroque, imperial grandeur of the Victorian age, (with its reverence to iron, steam and the Pax Britannica) and the later art deco movement that dominates in places like Napier, Fielding has a style defined by the Edwardian era, that brief time between 1900 and the end of the first world war. When settlers arrived in the 1870s, it understandably took time for them to raise the main edifices of a prosperous farming town. The grand frontage of the Fielding Hotel, St John’s church, the Fielding Club and numerous others, therefore, partook of the prevailing trends in architecture at the dawn of the 20th century. While what was seen as ‘adventurous’ design may not have flourished so immediately in England itself, here, in a far-flung colony, designers could embrace their vision of modernity and futurism. The result is a town that’s unique and special, a time capsule from a different age. The Fielding Hotel, with its ornate frontage and signature dome, is a perfect example. Local legend says that the savvy landlady of the hotel in the late 1800s donated land for the town’s post office, which would also be built

in the Edwardian style. Mrs Hastie, the hotel owner, gave one condition. The doors of the post office should face her own building so that thirsty folks about their errands would walk right out and see the array of cool beverages on tap. With the current popularity of Edwardian-era based Downton Abbey, it’s well worth a look around Fielding just for its preservation of this interesting time in history. Much of the historic

architecture still exists thanks to a preservation society founded in the 1990s, and of course, after strolling through Manchester Square, you can still stop by for some refreshment at the hotel for some authentic oldfashioned ambience.

Get your waste away Avoiding system failure Septic tanks prevent the suspended solids in household effluent from entering the disposal system. The escape of excessive suspended solids from a septic tank causes clogging of the disposal system and is the most common cause of early failure. There are three main processes that take place in the septic tank: 1. The heavier, solid particles settle to the bottom of the tank forming a

sludge layer. 2. Lighter materials such as fat and grease float to the surface forming a scum layer.

OUR SERVICES • Water Blasters, Italian made, quality hot and cold pressure cleaners • Drum tippers 200L and 20L; save on your ACC levies and make things easy • Water Pumps — quality brands, Grundfos, Southern Cross and Davey • Breakdown services, repairs, supplies and installations

3. Within the septic tank, there is little or no oxygen, and anaerobic bacteria (bugs that can live without oxygen) break down some of the solids. This helps to reduce the build-up of sludge in the tank. The effluent that leaves a welloperating septic tank contains only the smaller particles that are less likely to rapidly clog the disposal system. An effluent filter will allow only the smaller solids to enter your disposal system and is a relatively cheap way to significantly reduce the possibility of the early failure of your disposal system. Most modern septic tanks should have a filter installed on their outlet. With very little modification, effluent filters can be installed on the outlets of older septic tanks. When the effluent leaves the tank, it is only partially treated. The natural processes occurring within the soils below the disposal system carry out the final treatment. The type and size of the disposal system used are normally determined by the site conditions, groundwater level and soil type. Soakage trench and bed systems are the most common type of effluent disposal systems used in association with a septic tank.

Perforated pipes, or in older systems field tiles, are laid in shallow trenches filled with gravel. Effluent flows out of the holes in the pipe and soaks into the surrounding soil. Beds are wider and shallower than normal trenches, but should only be used where it is not possible to use trenches. Every trench or bed system that has more than one pipe for effluent disposal will have a distribution box for even distribution. It is important that all the outlets from the distribution box to the disposal pipes are at the same level. Even a small difference can result in the failure of a trench or bed due to overloading. Evapo-Transpiration Seepage Systems are normally installed where soils have poor soakage and are designed to use both soil soakage and selected plants for effluent disposal. The plants must like wet feet as they take up some of the effluents and use the nutrients to grow while the liquid evaporates through their leaves. The disposal area needs to be properly planted to prevent effluent from running off during wet periods and causing a problem. A list of recommended plants can be obtained from your local council.

Fonterra board candidates announced Incumbent Directors Donna Smit and Andy Macfarlane, along with Philipp Haas and Cathy Quinn have been announced as the Independently Assessed Candidates for the 2019 Fonterra Farmer Directors’ election. There are two different ways that Shareholders can stand for the board — as Independently Assessed Candidates or as Non-Assessed Candidates. Nominations for Non-Assessed Candidates, where farmers can stand as a candidate for the board with the support of 35 different shareholders closed at noon on Friday, September 27. Andy Macfarlane and Donna Smit are seeking re-election and chose to participate in the Independent Assessment Process. As re-standing directors, they automatically go through to the ballot. Philipp Haas and Cathy Quinn were recommended by the Independent Selection Panel after their assessment process. The three-member panel comprises of Tony Carter, chairman of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Joan Withers chair of Mercury NZ and The Warehouse Group, and Rob Campbell chair of Skycity Entertainment Group, Summerset, Tourism Holdings and WEL Networks. The panel played a critical role in Fonterra’s Farmer Directors’ Election process by providing the co-operative’s shareholders with an independent assessment of Farmer Director candidates who elect to go through

the Independent Assessment Process. The full list of candidates for the Fonterra Board of Directors’ Election, being the Independently Assessed Candidates and any Non-Assessed Candidates will be announced on Monday, September 30. Voting Packs, containing

candidate profiles, will be mailed to eligible shareholders on Tuesday, October 15. Shareholders can vote by internet or post, using the First Past the Post voting system. Voting closes at 10.30am on Tuesday, November 5 — with the results being announced later that day.

Feds call for honesty Adopt a methane target that science tells us will ensure no additional impact on global warming, not an unsubstantiated aspiration that will cause lasting damage to rural communities and the standard of living of all New Zealanders. That was the message from Federated Farmers to the Select Committee hearing on the Zero Carbon bill. “Federated Farmers agrees with the current text in the bill on the need to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide in the NZ agricultural industry by 2050,” Feds climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard said. “This ambitious support is in spite of the industry being heavily reliant on reliable energy supply and internal combustion-

powered vehicles for transport, both of which produce carbon dioxide, and despite the task of agriculture reducing nitrous oxide to net-zero being incredibly challenging. “Farmers ‘embrace this challenge’ because those two gases are longlived and build up in the atmosphere, so New Zealand, and the world, needs to get those gases to net zero as quickly as possible. However, methane, which is belched by livestock, is a short-

lived gas that produces almost no additional warming and flows in and out of the atmosphere if emitted at a constant rate. The science says NZ agriculture needs to reduce methane by about 0.3 per cent a year, or about 10 per cent by 2050, to have no additional warming effect — or in other words a zero-carbon equivalent. Yet, a 10 per cent target has been set for 2030, much earlier than for any other sector of society, and up to 47 per cent methane reductions by 2050. Mr Hoggard told the Select Committee that appears to be because it seems easier to tell people to consume less animal-based protein than it is to cut back on trips to Bali. “If that is the case, then let’s be open and honest and admit the agriculture sector is being asked to do more than its share.” The minister has challenged those disagreeing with the proposed targets to explain why he shouldn’t follow the advice of the IPCC. Federated Farmers provided three main reasons: • A key piece of advice in the relevant IPCC’s 2018 report was not to use the numbers from that report as precise national targets. • The report also recommended a much lower target for nitrous oxide,

but Federated Farmers is ignoring that as it is a long-lived gas. • Finally, the report modelled numerous pathways that all achieved the 1.5-degree warming target. In some of those pathways, biogenic methane actually increased. Economists pondered those pathways to work out the least cost to the globe of achieving the target, not the least cost to New Zealand. “This report was clearly not designed to be copied and pasted into our domestic legislation. “Modelling on what is the least cost to the economy for New Zealand to do its part hasn’t been done.” “Planting trees with a 30-year life before harvest is only a temporary solution, and blanketing productive farmland with pines kills off jobs, spending and inhabitants that rural communities depend on. “If farmers achieved the 10 per cent methane reductions that ensure no additional warming, and are rewarded for striving for additional reductions, there is incentive to invest in additional emissions reduction technology. “That keeps the rural community going, and reduces global warming — a win/win situation.”
