James Shaw attempted to justify his party’s policy to price livestock emissions on his belief that livestock produces half of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. The science and the facts about ruminant methane emissions do not support that. FARM was set up to present the facts about ruminant methane. The Green Party policy demonstrates how much the facts and the science of ruminant methane emissions are missing from the political debate about global warming. Using the discredited and nonscientific CO2 equivalent system to quantify ruminant emissions, as the Green Party has done, is to misrepresent the environmental impact of livestock farming. Any pricing scheme that is introduced for these emissions will be a financial fraud by the government on New Zealand’s farmers. There is nothing more than dishonest to quantify emissions of ruminant methane using a system that does not take into account the fact that ruminant methane emissions do not accumulate in the atmosphere in the way the system assumes they do. The

system is not fit for purpose and should not be used. The Ministry for the Environment states clearly that emissions of ruminant methane do not need to decrease at all to stop global warming. That means current ruminant methane emissions are not causing global warming, do not need to be reduced and should not be priced under any circumstances. FARM urges all political parties to listen to the science about livestock emissions of methane when developing their policies and not stick doggedly to false beliefs based on the failed CO2 equivalent system just because it suits their anti-farming ideology. New Zealand farmers have had enough of the lies and the unfair and unwarranted demonisation by our politicians. Our farmers lead the world in producing high-value produce with low environmental impacts, and humanity is served well by their efforts. Food is one of the most fundamental human requirements, and New Zealand should be proud of the part its farmers play in meeting that human need.

Dr Templer grew up on a Waikato dairy farm before heading to the University of Auckland, graduating with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. He furthered his studies to complete a PhD while working part-time as a lecturer in the university’s Mechanical Engineering Department. Dr Templer’s career has seen him working for several high profile companies and organisations, including Callaghan Innovation, where he was Research and Technical Services general manager. His appointment as chief executive for the Manawatu District Council (MDC) began in 2016, replacing outgoing chief executive Lorraine Vincent. In a recent email to council staff, Dr Templer reflected on his time with MDC and the advances that have been made. “It is with pride that I look at what MDC has achieved over the last four and a half years. Our infrastructure is New Zealand leading, our engagement and culture are among the best I’ve seen. Our community facilities and services are nationally and internationally recognised. Our customer service is award-winning, and our core services make me the envy of other CEs.” Although Dr Templer is excited to take up his position in Wellington in an industry that he is very familiar with, he will miss working for MDC and the district. “To work with, and for, such a wonderful team of people has been extremely enjoyable. It will be very hard to say goodbye to an organisation and community that has made me feel so welcome and has supported so much of what I set out to achieve. “I am confident that I leave MDC in good hands, with engaged and passionate people, an outstanding

executive team and an inspiring group of managers. The achievements above are down to this team, and it has been my privilege to play the part of coach and water boy.” Mayor Helen Worboys is saddened by Richard’s departure and appreciates the work that he has done during his tenure, especially in regards to engagement with both staff and the community. “Richard’s leadership over the past four and a half years has seen a huge positive shift in the council’s culture. His easy-going nature, team approach, ability to support and encourage the best out of everyone, plus his commitment to our district and region will be sorely missed,” she said. “We wish Richard well in his new role, being closer to family and sincerely thank him for his passion and commitment

to the Manawatu District Council.” Dr Templer has accepted the position of chief executive with Engineering New Zealand and plans to finish with the council in early November.

he 24-year-old is an entrant in the Ahuwhenua Awards and encourages other young people across the country to consider horticulture as a career. “After leaving school, I started to study at Victoria University in Wellington for a degree in commerce. I didn’t like the thought of spending another three years in a classroom and after two months left and headed home,” says Brandon. “I was introduced to Michael Franks, the CEO of Seeka, and he offered me the chance to join his company, so I

did. I moved to the Bay of Plenty a few months later. The work is based around the kiwifruit capital of New Zealand, Te Puke and Paengaroa. “I grew up in the city. My parents are from up the coast, and my mum’s dad was a farmer, but I had no experience on farms or orchards before this opportunity. I am now in my sixth year here. When I first started with another cadet Levi, I had no specific interest in horticulture but have developed a passion for the industry. As a cadet and trainee manager, I was involved

It gave us an appreciation for the workers who do the mundane and hard manual labour

jobs. This is the only job I have had so I couldn’t compare it to other work. I just thought it was hard.” Brandon and Levi worked with the international workers, and he says they are great to compare to for working hard. “We worked in the packhouse lifting 20-kilogram boxes all day if we were stacking. You get tired and cherish your days off. In the orchard, during winter you prune every day for three months. If you do just a week, it is easy, but pushing hard non-stop for three months is hard. “We planned to get where we are today. The cadetship started in

Brandon Cross says he took a punt when he was offered a cadetship with Seeka working in a kiwifruit orchard November 2014 as a trial. We studied horticulture with Primary ITO to get advanced level four alongside our three years of training under senior managers as our mentors. “We experienced every single job, including the processing in the cool stores. We operated all the machines, graded, packed and stacked the fruit to understand every aspect of the operation. “We began supervising in the second year, including orchard pruning and quality control. In our third year, we learnt organising, making decisions and running teams of staff. We then moved

into managing more staff and one block of our own under a mentor. “I had never seen a kiwifruit on a vine before. I was asking thousands of questions a day to make sure I understood everything, including pollination and cultural practices. The vines, maintenance and structural work are also vital. To start an orchard, we do the blocks, posts, wires and ag beam. Plant a shelter hedge or use shelter cloth for wind reduction. “We plant the grafted kiwifruit plants or bare and graft the variety later in the configuration of a row of female plants and then a row of males. We fertilise,

condition the soil and string the vines in spring.” The vines grow up toward the sun during summer, and the leaves drop in winter. “These are pulled down to create leaders along the lead wires, and the process is repeated the next year until the shoots grow up the strings and you get fruit. The process is repeated to create and maintain a kiwifruit orchard. “It is a fun job, and I enjoy the harvest. A big part of my success was meeting people of other ethnicities from

all over the world, working together to get the job done. My favourite fruit is the green kiwifruit as it is not as sweet as the gold, but other people love the gold. I have recently become a full manager with more hectares and an increased portfolio. I am looking forward to the Ahuwhenua Awards results. Seeka has looked after us, and we are giving back to them, it is a two-way street. They have invested so much into us, and I really appreciate the opportunity. I took a punt on the job and am pleased I did.”

So much at stake

by Lockwood Smith

For the first time in my life, I’m actually frightened of my country’s government. For someone who spent 29 years in parliament, and a minister for almost a decade, that may sound a bit odd, but I am. It’s scary when a government chooses heavy handed-regulation when cost/benefit analyses aren’t robust, where implementation has been given scant consideration, and where the government just doesn’t have the experience to understand the risks around perverse outcomes. The banning of offshore hydrocarbon exploration in 2018 was one example. While reducing fossil fuel use makes good sense, hydrocarbons are used for a myriad of other purposes in our modern economy. More focus on banning fossil fuel subsidies globally, could have done more good, but, of course, it wouldn’t look so bold. If it was just that one decision, it might not be so frightening. However, the recent Action for Healthy Waterways regulations makes it clear that this government is more focussed on being seen to act, rather than doing what is really effective.

Again, no one denies the need to improve the health of our waterways. However, it’s how it’s done that’s so important. While this government is clever at politics, it’s demonstrated repeatedly its inability to implement policy effectively. The freshwater decisions not only ride roughshod over property rights that have underpinned economic success in western democracies for generations, but they’re so impractical that they’d be laughable if the costs of implementing them weren’t so serious. These regulations would make the EU proud, but they’re not the New Zealand way. Our approach is spelt out in the CPTTP Trade Agreement in the chapter on good regulatory practice — that is outcome focussed and based on sound risk management. We wrote it, but have then ignored it. Our government has chosen instead to dictate what you can do on your land. For example, I farm beef cows in

a second. I doubt whoever wrote this stuff has ever been near a farm. Little wonder some farmers are threatening to ignore the whole ridiculous mess. Moreover, threats from ministers won’t make their deeply flawed regulations any more workable. The frightening list goes on. How agriculture’s biological emissions are to be brought into New Zealand’s carbon emissions reduction programme is also critically important. If the government decides He Waka Eke Noa has made insufficient progress and brings agriculture into the existing Emissions Trading Scheme, the consequences could be dire.

I couldn’t even sell land to a dairy farming neighbour without a resource consent, which would be impossible to get. Somehow, I’ll also have to get a resource consent for my sheltered sawdust pad that I’ve used for 20 years to calve my cows. It’s a valuable animal welfare asset, enabling them to calve in warmer, drier conditions. However, now, no drain will be allowed within 50 metres — with Northland’s rainfall! The way the legislation is currently framed, it risks failing to reduce carbon emissions for each kilogram of agricultural product at all. Instead, it would just make New Zealand agriculture less competitive globally, and see higher global emissions from less carbon-efficient food produced elsewhere. Ruminant methane emissions are more significant in New Zealand than any other developed economy. Yet the government sticks to a flawed accounting system shown by the IPCC’s leading scientist in this area, Prof Miles Allen, a physicist at Oxford, to seriously overestimate the global warming potential of methane. An irrational government is frightening. They keep repeating the mantra that New Zealand has one of

the higher carbon emissions profiles per capita of any country. The paradox is that if our economy was based on the export of oil, rather than food, we’d have one of the lowest. You see, oil emissions are accounted for in the country that consumes it, while food emissions are accounted for in the country that produces it. To add to their scrambled thinking, they allow fossil fuel emissions to be offset by blanketing good hill country farmland in pines. The environmental catastrophe of silt and slash that destroy our waterways at plantation harvesting are an affront to those who love and care for our land. Ministers in significant portfolios, to do their job properly, have to work extraordinary hours. They are paid good money to do it. It means they should

be right across the detail of how their policies will be implemented. Relying on officials isn’t good enough. They rarely have the practical experience needed. Anyone attending freshwater consultation meetings last year could see that. It’s why we have ministers in a democracy. They are meant to have the knowledge, experience in the wider world brings. For farming right now, there’s so much at stake. FIVE YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT HAS ARRIVED!

A gift voucher for three art lessons led Graham Christensen on a journey, finding hidden talents as an artist, specialising in rural scenes.

G

raham and his wife Sue were operating a holiday resort in Queensland, Australia, when Sue gave him the vouchers as a birthday gift. At that stage, Graham had no interest in painting, so filed the vouchers away and forgot about them. “Six months later, I thought I had better use it, or I would never get another birthday gift from Sue,” said Graham. “The art tutor gave me a list of requirements for a starter — paintbrushes, paints and a canvas. My only knowledge of canvas was that it was something tents were once made of. Off to the art shop and they very quickly enlightened me.” By the end of the third lesson, Graham was totally committed. “The tutor played a big role in encouraging me, as did the other students in the group.”

Weekly art classes at the Gold Coast branch of the Royal Queensland Art Society continued for the next four years, with Graham loving every minute of it. Graham grew up on farms in the Manawatu, and farm chores were part of everyday life. School holiday jobs varied from milking cows, helping in shearing gangs, picking potatoes and carting hay. While living in the Makino area near Feilding, he recalls drovers bringing stock from the Rangitikei district to the Feilding saleyards. During university breaks between semesters, Graham often helped his father at the Feilding stock sales. In 1970, after completing a Diploma in Agriculture at Lincoln University, Graham took up employment as a livestock technician with the Department of Agriculture.

The windmills in the background have provided inspiration for some of Graham’s paintings

Checking the flock “At that time, the Department of Agriculture was developing a project of evaluating exotic breeds of both cattle and sheep. The purpose was to cross the exotic breeds with our own traditional breeds and to assess the resulting crossbreeds.” Prior to the livestock being imported, Graham was awarded a 10-month study scholarship in France. He evaluated breeds of cattle in France that may have been useful to import into New Zealand for the crossbreeding programme. “On my return to New Zealand, the government then imported a number of exotic bulls, as well as a quantity of frozen semen from about 15 cattle breeds. My role was as a research technician on one of the three research farms, specific to the cattle breeding programme.”

Graham and Sue, and their young family, later moved to Mana Island where, three years earlier, the exotic sheep breeding programme had commenced. Graham’s role was as research programme manager on the island. “On leaving the island, we bought a business marketing dairy products, initially in Wellington and then in Palmerston North. At the same time, we bought a small lifestyle block in the Manawatu and started stag finishing and velveting. I soon bought a larger block at Rongotea and converted this to deer breeding and velveting in the mid-1980s.” Graham joined the staff at Massey University in 1992. His role was to place agricultural, horticultural and veterinary students into vacation employment to

gain industry experience as part of their degree requirement. He also acted as adviser to the university’s Young Farmers Club. In 2005, Graham and Sue moved to Brisbane. Sue, a secondary school teacher, took on teaching again and Graham took up employment with the Griffith University in the School of Business. The couple searched for a suitable business and soon bought a holiday resort on the Gold Coast. After operating the business for 10 years, the couple moved back to New Zealand, buying a 30-acre lifestyle block in the Manawatu. A large hay barn on the property, with a room built into one end for accommodation, serves as Graham’s

studio. With his farming background, Graham has developed his art around the agricultural world. His paintings have captured shearing gangs, farmers with their working dogs, woolsheds, old farm workshops, rural landscapes and the Feilding saleyards. “I continue to go to art classes, taught by well-known Manawatu artist Vonnie Sterritt, and who is extremely encouraging and supportive, and to whom I owe considerable gratitude.” Graham’s next exhibition, Rural Recollections, will be open at the Yellow Church Gallery in Mangaweka, from October 24. Graham will also be taking part in the Art Trail Manawatu over the weekend of November 14–15.

Art awards showcased A diverse exhibition of art is on display at the Feilding and Districts Art Society (FADAS), showcasing works in the annual art awards competition. The Feilding and Districts Art Society Inc Annual Awards opened in September with an award presentation, nibbles and drinks. This year’s awards drew 83 entrants, vying for a prize pool of close to $3,000. Entrant numbers were well up from previous competitions. FADAS members and non-members living in the greater Manawatu District are eligible to enter the art awards. The society’s administrator Doreen Robertson said a committee of four members spent three months organising and preparing for the competition. “The judges are invited from Manawatu and further afield. This year, they were from Woodville.” Categories featured landscape, flora and fauna, portraiture, and photography. A people’s choice award and an encouragement award were also presented. Tim McAnnich, with Coming Home, was the premier winner of the photography section. The merit award went to Mary Lewis with Winter Morning. The portraiture section was won by Colin

Hoare with his entry Batuti. Anne Morris received a merit award with Nev. The premier of flora and fauna was Michele Theobald with Autumn Birch. A merit award was presented to Victoria McGovern with Two Carps and highly commended was Tim McAnnich with Golden Onions. Ruth Champion won the landscape section with Ashhurst Bridge. The merit award went to Lynley Wilson with Pristine. Karen Sinclair’s Rusty Old Tractor Tararua was highly commended. The supreme prize was awarded to Irene Whittaker for her feathered koru in a glass case. Since the establishment of FADAS, committee members and supporters have displayed artworks, run exhibitions, and held have-a-go sessions. Three-week group or solo exhibitions are held on a regular basis, and members’ works are often on general display and available for sale. Art workshops feature regularly, and local schools are also encouraged to display special artworks.

For all flooring solutions Murray and Mel Henderson have been the proud owners of Feilding Flooring Xtra for the last two years after long service in the rural sector. Murray will be well-known to many having been a local shearing contractor in the Manawatu and a top competition shearer on the circuits for many years. Buying Flooring Xtra in 2018 was a huge step for the couple. Although Mel comes from previously working in flooring, it was a definite change for Murray, from the shearing shed to a retail store. Two years on, and they are loving the challenges it has brought.

“It was definitely a change from what I had been used to for the last 20 years. Moreover, there’s no more wet days off — that’s for sure!” says Murray. “I’m really enjoying the change. The Manawatu region is the heartland of Kiwi agriculture, with a history that spans diesel power, steam, cart horses and bullock trains, all the way back to the earliest cultivation of the land in preEuropean times. Guardians of this legacy of technology, and much more, the Coach House Museum provides a touchstone for locals and visitors alike. They say you can’t plan your future without understanding your past, and one of the most important things about the town of Feilding is civic pride. Voted the most beautiful town in New Zealand no less than 14 times, Feilding is by no means all about show, however. The biggest stockyards in the Southern Hemisphere are here, and not far from the doors of this expansive, eclectic museum collection, curated to provide an insight into more than 140 years of local history. That means a feast for the eyes for those who appreciate vintage machinery, and a look back to the past when even the daily chores we take for granted were all accomplished by hand! Nothing makes one appreciate the comforts of a modern, air-conditioned tractor cab than seeing the sweat, grease and coal that went into Victorian-era farming, or the sheer muscle needed to drive the horse drawn ploughs and implements of yesteryear. For quality and service Whether it’s a new electrical socket, a house rewired, an appliance repaired or heating and refrigeration advice, Andrew Boustridge and Dianna Bolton of APB Electrical are happy to take your call. APB Electrical is a full electrical and refrigeration installation and service company servicing the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Horowhenua. Supplying, installing and servicing all major heat pump brands, Dianna said the company is the authorised service centre for Panasonic, and they find their reputation for quality service means they are getting referrals from the other major brands also. Andrew has 25 years’ industry experience, and together with partner, Dianna they have grown their business, which now has a team of five electricians and one apprentice on the road. “We have established a reputation for quality and service. It is our intention to continue building that reputation and secure ourselves as the first thought for anyone needing any kind of electrical service,” Dianna said. When considering your heating and cooling options, it pays not to rush out and grab any heat pump you see on special.

Heating and cooling requirements change according to a number of variables including the size of the space, common room use and so forth. Before making a recommendation, Andrew will measure up a room and consider all variables. “This is really important. If the heat pump is too big, it will be too expensive to run. If it’s too small, you just won’t feel the benefit.” Andrew and Dianna are currently working on their next stage of development and will soon be opening a new showroom and office from their current workshop address in Gladstone Street. “We’re looking forward to having somewhere for our customers to come in and see the actual product, it’s a step up from using pictures in a catalogue,” Dianna said. “We’re committed to providing a great service and making sure our customers get value for their money.”

Manawatu Tattoo set to go ahead A star-studded line-up is set to celebrate women in the arts at the upcoming 2020 Manawatu Tattoo. The two-hour show will feature the return of popular country singer Suzanne Prentice. Suzanne has supported the show since the inaugural event in 2010. Special guest artists, Piping Pink, and Bras and Brass will perform. Piping Pink features some of New Zealand’s best female pipers and drummers. Both Piping Pink and the 83-piece all-women Bras and Brass band raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research. Marching teams, stage bands, dancers, kapa haka and stunt riders are also among those who will take to the stage. Local musician and songstress, Vicki Lee, will perform a tribute to Vera Lynn,

singing classics while vintage military vehicles are driven into the stadium. Event spokesperson Sheran Handcock said there are around 250 local, national and international performers lined up to entertain the crowd. “There is no other show like this running in New Zealand. Manawatu Tattoo is now a brand that is recognised and respected.” Jason and Sheran Handcock have organised the Manawatu Tattoo since 2010. Planning for the 2020 Manawatu Tattoo began two years ago. Sheran said the event had encouraged young participants to continue with their

CROP & PASTURE PREP The engine room of spring growth by Andy Bryenton

With the days getting longer and spring officially on the calendar, things are changing all around us in nature. The obvious signs, like blooming daffodils, are one thing, but a more profound change is occurring under our feet, as the entire underground biome shifts from winter to summer mode. Human agriculture has taken note of these changes since ancient times. Still, it’s only in more recent decades that we’ve really begun to understand the science which dictates life under the soil of farmers’ paddocks. This knowledge has led to advancements in how best to aerate the soil, how best to promote healthy growth for new crops, and even how to plant seed for optimum performance. Some of this work in creating new understanding comes from soil scientists patiently sampling cores of earth each season to measure chemicals, nutrient levels and the activity of fungi and bacteria. Other information is increasingly fed into our soil and pasture model from space, as satellites join in the task of helping provide robust agriculture for a growing and hungry population. Of course, some of the basics, such as the need to plough and turn the soil, and the importance of using crop

rotation to fix nitrogen, have been known about since the Middle Ages. The three-field system, developed in those long-ago times, was discovered by monks who didn’t have the right words to explain why it was better. They may well have gleaned information from very old texts in Greek, from the time of ancient Egypt and Babylon. The adoption of the three-field system, with its emphasis on healthy soil, increased food production is said to be a driving force behind the Renaissance, when trade, and hence learning flourished. This is all good news, but of little concern today to the farmer thinking about modern crop choices, seed placement and soil harrowing, most of which is now accomplished by machine. The key, however, remains the same as it was back in the days of those early monks. When the microbiome in the soil begins to switch from its winter mode

Soil scientists take a closer look at the underlying strata beneath the surface of pasture, building up a map of the nutrients, bacteria and fungi which interact there

to its more active spring and summer phase, it’s time to be out there working. Inclement weather is sure to blow over soon as we pass the equinox and head into summer. So thinking ahead to consult with soil science experts

and the contractors who wield today’s powerful harrows and seed drills is smart business. In short, it’s time to take care of your soil, so it, in turn, will take care of you through what may be a long hot summer.

CROP & PASTURE PREP Insight into fieldwork’s future by Andy Bryenton

The engineers at CNH Industrial were looking to the future ahead of 2019’s European Agritechnica, and what they came up with is a reflection of a trend, which has changed passenger vehicles and inner cities, but has yet to make a huge impact on the farm. Their Steyr hybrid concept treats power in a whole new fashion, delivering a look into tomorrow. As far as design studies go, this is no mere clay model with nothing under the hood. Steyr, a company in the same stable as industry giants Case IH and New Holland, has delivered a machine, which combines a diesel power plant with several electric motors, as well as the facility to send voltage to electrically powered or controlled implements. In their own words: “What requirements will a tractor have to meet in future? We asked ourselves this very question before developing the Steyr Concept. This concept combines innovative technologies in a hitherto unique way to create an environmentally friendly, yet efficient and, above all, functional tractor concept. At the heart of the system lies a modular hybrid electric

drive, comprising a combustion engine, a generator, and several electric motors. The selection of these components creates a compact vehicle design.” That, and much more. Under the futuristic skin, the big red and white machine has a diesel-electric hybrid drive train like those used in military subs. A four-cylinder 204 horsepower engine is mated to an electric generator, feeding a battery bank and sending voltage to four independent electric wheel motors, and a fifth motor that drives the PTO system. As one could imagine, this allows for infinitely variable torque vectoring to grip in even the worst conditions, as well as impressive transit performance on the road. The new Steyr is also set up to power

Steyr proves a show stopper — the big concept hybrid was centre stage at Agritechnica and points the way forward for tractor tech

electrically-driven implements, a new breed which is starting to emerge from the manufacturers of Europe. Hence a set of 48V or 700V connections ready to interface with these new, more highly monitored devices. Unsurprisingly, the comfortable cab is also set up with interface points for the latest in satellite navigation and even

boasts the ability to link with a drone, allowing for a vast range of vision and more field data on hand. Like a concept car, the Steyr may not reach the field in this exact trim. However, it’s a look at where new Steyr, New Holland and Case IH machines may be headed in the not too distant future.

CROP & PASTURE PREP Farming really is rocket science by Andy Bryenton

In 2018, an ambitious new plan carried out in partnership between the United States Government and private company SpaceX saw the first of a new generation of GPS satellites headed for orbit. The latest flew from Cape Canaveral Space Centre in June, with more to come. However, why is this news for a farming publication? The existing network of only 31 civilianaccessible GPS satellites has changed the concept of ‘isolation’ forever, making it hard to truly get lost. It’s also had a profound effect on farming, as it’s now possible to accurately guide machinery and vehicle operations from space. Imagine playing chess from down among

the pieces; it would be hard to see the whole board. That’s what it was like to try and plan a fertiliser application strategy before GPS and satellite imagery gave us an alien’s eye view from low orbit. Improved GPS, with more satellites able to accurately measure down into the

millimetre range, means better control for activities such as harvesting, pasture prep, seed drilling, and of course, fertiliser placement. When you consider that New Zealand’s leading GPS guided fert placement system, TracMap, is responsible for close to three-quarters of all fertiliser application strategies, you can see where even a small increase in operational efficiency and accuracy could make a huge difference. GPS III, as the new system is called, may still be under the aegis of the US military, but it will be tougher against solar flares and radiation, and able to ‘handshake’ with the European Galileo system for even more coverage and accuracy. Add this to the data able to be gleaned from satellites like Galileo’s ‘cousin’ in space, Copernicus. It will be

possible to take extra variables such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity and other factors into account when looking at your land in the way only previously possible in complex simulation games. China has kept up with the west, launching another of their Gaofen land analysis satellites this year too. While in earlier times rivals to the superpower may have feared its spy capabilities, the real might of the Gaofen is in its ability to accurately plan crop placement and harvesting for the vast population of the People’s Republic. GPS III is set to be fully online from 2022, but advancements in GPS tracking are already being felt in the local rural sector. Next time you see a ground spreading truck at work, chances are its orders came, ultimately, via helping eyes in space.

Get your waste away Technology meets ecology by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to cars, all the talk right now is about trading in the ‘old tank’ for something more modern, with less of a footprint on the environment and lower operating costs. However, under the ground near your garage or driveway, there’s likely another kind of ‘old tank’ that has been well superseded by modern thinking. It’s true that most people don’t consider their wastewater systems until it’s too late, or at least until the noxious smell points of trouble brewing below. The old way of doing things was fine in a limited context. However, today, with a more comprehensive knowledge of how bacteria break down waste and how it’s possible to use treated wastewater to complete the natural cycle and irrigate green spaces, there are options far beyond the simple concrete containment vessel of yesteryear. When renovating or building new, it’s a good idea to get things underground sorted from the get-go. Councils and builders will need to know what you’re planning to install, so get them involved from the start of planning to ensure the best outcome. It all comes down to where you want to build and how you’re going to utilise the space. A busy home for a family is different from an off the grid cabin for holidays or an additional dwelling to bolster living room on the farm. Getting an expert in to take a look

and apply their years of experience could save you thousands in the long-term. The best news for modern, ecofriendly builds is that power-free or micro solar-operated systems are now in the mainstream, as are systems designed to process waste liquids into valuable irrigating run-off. It’s all about best harnessing the different types of naturally occurring benign bacteria which thrive in waste, breaking it down into harmless byproducts. By designing a system which allows these tiny creatures to do the best possible job, efficiency is boosted, and there’s less need for pumping out. Some systems can go between five and seven years without professional attention. One of the biggest advances in waste treatment systems above and beyond the old septic tank model is the ability to operate on hilly land or in areas too small for a classic septic tank. This flexibility gives designers and architects more scope to get creative and a wider range of spaces where modern systems

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: September

OUR PEOPLE IN FORESTRY – Kiwi Lumber Kiwi lumber operates 4 sawmills across the North Island in Masterton, Dannevirke, Putaruru and now Gisborne. Across these sites they employ 275 staff and are looking at hiring another 50 for the new operation that is starting in Gisborne to pave the way for $15 million of capital investment over the next three years and a substantial investment in systems and  teams.  Kiwi Lumber are experienced in running very successful timber processing businesses, taking on troubled sites, turning them around and growing them as part of their group.  They have demonstrated 70 percent revenue growth in their sawmilling businesses

Many new houses and commercial building use these building blocks for our growing housing supply. Chances are your house is built using local radiata pine from local sawmills.

over the past five years. Kiwi Lumber managing director, Adam Gresham, is confident the Matawhero mill can be highly successful. “Kiwi Lumber wouldn’t take this site on unless we were confident we could make a go of it.”

Kiwi Lumber as a growing, progressive sawmilling company marketing radiata pine to the USA, Australia, Europe, Asia and New Zealand customers. In Masterton, Capital Pre-cut is supplied by Kiwi Lumber for building timber frames and trusses.

Pine Pollen. What’s the problem? It’s the time of year that spring is ushered in on a haze of yellow. Unfortunately, the clouds of pine pollen that kickstart the season for many hundreds of other tree and grass species often gets the blame for a myriad of “allergic” reactions. Pine trees only have a short flowering season, 2 weeks over most of New Zealand starting in the late winter early spring. Pine pollen is a large waxy pollen carrying few proteins and only 2.2% nitrogen. It is not poisonous, or toxic and does not “clog up waterways”, “corrode paint” or damage the environment. Pine Pollen in fact breaks down very quickly in the outdoors, and apart from washing your car or windows more often, has almost no effect on our activities. Concerns that pine pollen is

a cause of nitrogen build-up in waterways are unfounded. Nitrogen contributed to waterbodies is very low and for a short time only given the brief pollen season. Pine Pollen is not very allergenic, and research from Scion has shown less than 5% of people show any allergic reaction. The large pollen grains do not penetrate deeply into the nose. Tree species known to cause the worst reactions include birch, wattle, ash and olive. As the pollen is so large and visible, and often is produced at the same time as other more harmful pollens, there is a case of mistaken identity here. The plant causing the biggest problem here is the perennial ryegrass. It is the biggest pollen producer of all and the major

cause of springtime hay fever. The majority of people with allergies are sensitive to it. The pollen, being small, will travel in the wind for many miles and our exposure is dictated by proximity to grasslands and the prevailing wind. In New Zealand the pollen season varies, between October and February, and often symptoms are blamed on other causes as the pollen is invisible to the eye. While there have been no proven health benefits of pine pollen, at the most it is a mild annoyance, and nothing that a quick splash with a hose won’t fix. Embrace the yellow, it’s a sign that winter is over. References: Pine Pollen – Scion factsheet. Pine Pollen and Cross reactions in New Zealand - V St Aubyn Crump NZ Allergy Clinic.

What is Forest Stewardship Council?

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) has a global forest certification system to provide a guarantee that forest products come from responsibly managed sources. The system has two key components:  • Forest Management (FM) certification shows that forest managers or owners are managing their forests in a responsible way. Forest management certification is a guarantee your processes and operations meet FSC standards;  • Chain of Custody (CoC) certification provides a guarantee about the production and source of FSC-certified products. It is for businesses manufacturing or trading forest products. Chain of Custody certification verifies that products are handled correctly at every stage of production – from forest to shelf.  You can look for the FSC logo on many paper products you buy at the supermarket, or book stores, such as toilet paper, paper towels, paper or pencils to ensure you are buying a product that is sourced from a certified forest.

The Southern North Island Wood Council provides a collective voice for the forestry sector in Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Tararua and Wellington. Members have a common interest in ensuring the long-term success of the sector. Membership is open to any company or individual with an interest in the local wood industry. Erica Kinder, SNI Wood Council CEO, can be contacted for more information. sniwoodcouncil@gmail.com

Lumber’s two Appearance Grade mills are also FSC certified meaning that you can rely on wood products always being sourced from well managed forests.

sniwoodcouncil.co.nz/

Look for their logo on the back of all paper and wood products. In New Zealand, ALL our pine forests are renewable and many of our companies have gained registration though this system to provide assurance to customers. This means we can choose products that we know have come from sustainable sources.  The FSC logo is internationally recognised in 81 countries to ensure the products we buy made from wood are coming from sustainably managed forests. High value is placed on the conservation of protected forests and wildlife habitat and species in both indigenous and plantations forests worldwide. Why is this important? In New Zealand we make a clear distinction around our plantation forests that are sustainably managed to provide us with the wood fibre we need for products while not impacting on our native resource. In many countries overseas this distinction is not as clear, many of their native forests are also managed for fibre, a process that ensures products are only made from sustainable harvest is very important to limit deforestation and give consumers information.  References: www.nz.fsc.org

Vivid memoir takes flight by Andy Bryenton

If you’re reading this publication, it’s a fair bet that you enjoy a true tale of Kiwi farming adventures. Through the years we’ve brought you a fair few, but none, perhaps, with the scope of the life story of the ‘flying farmer’, Bruce Galloway. In his recently published memoir, Bruce lays out a life full of rural adventures, on horseback, motorcycle, tractor, truck, and ultimately in the air. As befits his nickname, Bruce has plenty of stories to tell about traversing the rural countryside on wings. He’s survived some hair-raising scrapes in the process, including the devastating crash of his Cessna 182. Here you’ll find a colloquial chronology from childhood through to adult life, spanning 11 farms and an enormous cast of colourful family and friends as characters. The importance of coenzyme Q10

(Part three)

I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject. Especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood, and there’s comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative

problems. For example, I include at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a highquality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems, my mitochondrial support formula, that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy cofactors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. Most people feel a real difference within three months. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Cleaning out woolsheds is easy Clearing out the manure from under woolsheds has become easy work with Cleansweep Woolsheds. Mark Turton, along with his wife Megan, has been servicing the Tararua area for more than 30 years with their fencing business. Wanting to further assist their clients with farm maintenance, Mark invented a machine that goes under woolsheds and pulls out all the sheep manure. The system is highly versatile, able to be used for any type of woolshed and handle the lowest of sheds. The Clean Sweep machine is also ideal for cleaning the hard count-out pens, and by using the Kanga and bucket set up, they can clear away deposits on the undercover yards. “It also decreases wool staining, and most important of all, it reduces the ammonia smell which the shearers will appreciate,” says Megan. There is a huge variety of woolsheds around, so Mark visits the farm first and gives a no-obligation quote. Once

a quote is accepted, Kelly and Joe, who have both been working with this machine for the past four years, will complete the clean. We have had great feedback from clients. Many are impressed by the speed of the machine, and Kelly and Joe, who make a good team, are very pleasant to work with. One client says: “Thanks for the awesome job your staff and machinery made of our woolshed. Innovative thinking and a couple of hard-working clever guys combined to make an unpleasant job a breeze. “I would highly recommend this to anyone.” If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed, count-out pens or covered yards for a while, give Mark a call. “We wanted our own business as we have a young family. The decision came earlier than expected when I was made redundant from my last job,” says Jason. “We took ownership of Enviroline on the first of July and look forward to building ongoing relationships. Roz and I have been around farms our whole life. Roz was born on a dairy farm in Pirongia before moving to beef and sheep operations and also worked on horse studs. “I am Te Awamutu-born and bred. My dad is a vet, and we understand the needs of the farming community. I have predominantly worked in the agriculture/veterinarian industry and have spent the most part of the last 20 years dealing with dairy farmers. “Enviroline is the lining for the HPE liner. The majority of our business is in dairy effluent ponds. We are getting into the commercial sector including stormwater ponds for subdivisions and catchment ponds for industrial sites. We also line decorative ponds for lifestyle block holders and farmers. We are happy to get involved at any stage of THE ORIGINAL FLEXIBLE BLADDER

a project and help design the pond as well through our contacts. You need to take into account the soil type, the number of cows if it is an effluent pond, and the annual rainfall for a pond to be built correctly. “Ponds need to be constructed with the right material and lined the correct way. You need leak protection, and there are a number of technical issues to consider. It’s not like the old days where you just dug a hole and put a pipe in. “There are three layers to the lining, and it is important to understand what the end product will look like. “The earlier we are involved, the better as it also dramatically reduces potential delays. “It is good to have everyone, such as the earthworks guys around the table

Specialist solutions at Surfatex For the past two decades, the skilled team at Manawatu-based Surfatex has earned the reputation for top-quality protective and anti-slip floor solutions, dairy coatings, concrete and painting services. As one of five franchised applicators for the Acraflex Hi-Build Dairy Wall Coating system, the Surfatex 2019 team is available to offer expert advice and workmanship. The team travels all across the central and lower North Island, with extensive work in Taranaki and the Wairarapa. Surfatex 2019 director, Glen Sinclair, bought the company last year as his career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force came to an end. Glen also took on the three current employees who have many years of experience in the industry. “I had a desire to work for myself, so I looked around at possible businesses. With Surfatex, I thought I had a lot of transferable skills from trade in the air force as a Safety and Surface technician.” Glen grew up in Waitarere Beach, north of Levin, and worked on a farm while waiting to be accepted into the air force. He has also filled in as a casual milker. Building up the agricultural side of Surfatex 2019 is one of Glen’s goals. “I enjoy working with the farmers and assisting them to get a pass mark from the inspector,” he said. With hygiene standards becoming more stringent for the dairy industry, the experienced team at Surfatex 2019 can help farmers to comply.

Surfatex employees at the shed

The Acraflex Hi-Build Dairy Wall Coating system is designed for shed hygiene and ease of cleaning. Extremely hard-wearing and resistant to acids and alkali used in the dairy industry, the system allows dirt and grime to be easily washed from the glazed finish. “Many farmers are now looking at laying a resin floor in the milk room to combat the harsh chemicals, which tend to eat away the concrete and expose the aggregate. “They are also looking at repairing cracks in the yard with resin for its

longevity, even with the everyday cow traffic. I see the dairy industry as our niche in the market.” The Surfatex team also offers concrete overlays to enhance the look of driveways and paths. Covid-19 ended plans to attend this year’s Central Districts Field Days, as the event was cancelled. However, planning for next year has already started with their regular site number O-14 already booked. “We hope to meet many members of the rural community,” said Glen.
