Consultation launched for biosecurity Sheep and beef farmers are being encouraged to have their say on a proposal to give the sector a direct say in readiness and response to biosecurity threats. Beef + Lamb New Zealand, in conjunction with DairyNZ and Deer Industry New Zealand, is launching consultation on a proposal to sign a Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response Deed. Information packs outlining the proposal are due to arrive in farmers’ mailboxes and the consultation officially got underway from October 31. Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ, said the GIA was about working together to protect farmers from exotic pests and diseases. “Farmers consistently tell us that biosecurity risks are among the biggest risks we face as an industry. “Currently, when hard decisions are being made about how New Zealand prepares to respond to an exotic pest or disease incursion and, more importantly, what to do during an actual response — we are ‘in the room’ and consulted, but it is the Government that makes all the final decisions. “Signing the GIA would give sheep and beef farmers, through B+LNZ, a seat at the biosecurity decision-making table. Alongside other GIA Signatories, we would have more direct influence on biosecurity preparedness and response decision making. “There are costs associated with signing the GIA, because it means agreeing to contribute to readiness and response costs. The level of these contributions would depend on the significance of the pest or disease to the sheep and beef sector. “Importantly, our sector could also choose to set a funding limit as part of a GIA Operational Agreement. We think that the benefits of signing the GIA, with increased certainty and control over our own biosecurity destiny, justifies potential costs. We would be better prepared, have a pre-agreed set

of minimum readiness and response commitments between industry and government, and agreed limits on our industry’s potential cost-share for readiness and response activities. “If we don’t sign the GIA, we will have much less influence over the decisions that affect our sector.” Mr McIvor said the Government could also use powers under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to recover costs from industries that benefit from a response even if they have not signed the GIA. “That would be a poor outcome for our sector and we would lose the opportunity to work together with government and other industries under the GIA to manage fundamental risks to all livestock farmers. “It is vital farmers have their say on this important matter.” Consultation ends on December 6, 2017. New era for Conservation Trust A new era of conservation partnership in support of its restoration efforts on the Bream Head Scenic Reserve has been welcomed by the Bream Head Conservation Trust as a new patron has been welcomed. AUT University chancellor John Maasland became the Trust’s new patron at a ceremony in Whangarei in October, and the Trust also announced that it was opening the way for corporate partnerships to help fund the ambitious goals of its 2017–2021 five-year restoration plan. “The Trust is honoured to have John accept the position of patron,” says Greg Innes, Bream Head Conservation Trust chairman. “He has a distinguished business career behind him and is a director of Waterman Capital, chairman of their No.3 Investment Fund and the Pacific Oceans Initiative, and a former chairman of the Airways Corporation of New Zealand, Carter Holt Harvey, Auckland International Airport, Hellaby Holdings, the South Auckland Health Foundation, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and Wilson & Horton. “John’s appointment heralds a new beginning for the Trust, and it
coincides with our decision to seek partnerships with five businesses to help fund the progressive species and habitat protection programmes we have planned.” Those programmes build on the work started in 2001 with the establishment of the Trust to see the pest-ridden Bream Head Scenic Reserve on the Whangarei Heads Peninsula returned to its pre-European state. Predators had made this, the largest remaining area of coastal pohutukawa-broadleaf forest in Northland, inhospitable to the birds that once filled its trees, and Trust members wanted to tempt them back from the offshore islands to which they had retreated. “Fifteen years of intensive pest control programmes and community engagement have since seen the Trust achieve local, national and internationally-acclaimed conservation successes on the Reserve,” Greg says. “Our 2017–2021 five-year restoration

plan now raises the bar even higher, with John’s appointment as patron adding impetus to our search for big-hearted businesses committed to financial support of our projects. He has big boots to fill.” The Trust’s previous high-profile patrons, the late Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Paul Reeves, were both active supporters of its aims and initiatives. “We know that John’s extensive business knowledge and experience will also be a huge asset to the Trust, especially at this stage in its conservation journey,” says Greg. “We look forward to having him as patron and to working with him to take our work on the Bream Head Scenic Reserve to new levels in years to come.”

Students join planting effort
A planting day on a Kokopu dairy farm saw the first of more than 20,000 plants established in a bid to help local efforts to improve water quality.
T
he project is a collaboration between Nga Kaitiaki O Nga Wai Maori — representing seven local hapu, the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, and the Northland Regional Council’s Mangere Stakeholder Catchment group. “A range of karamu, harakeke (flax), ti kouka (cabbage tree), kanuka and manuka plants were donated by Te Arai Nursery,” says NKONWM chair Hona Edwards. “This is the first planting event of this scale by NKONWM and we are positive of its success now, and for any future opportunities. Riparian planting is absolutely important on many levels, as is building supportive community
relationships for success. “It is important to NKONWM and the Kaipara Harbour Management Group that we find farmers who are willing to participate.” Forty-five Year 5-8 Kokopu School students, teachers and parents got involved with the planting through the Whitebait Connection on the 93ha dairy farm of siblings Shayne and Charmaine O’Shea. The students planted around 400 native plants on the banks of the Mangere River. The plants were the first of 4,000 donated to properties in the catchment. “As a school we host the Mangere Catchment group as they help improve the water quality in our local river — we

have helped other farmers as well,” says school principal Mark Ashcroft. “We have a philosophy of ‘taking action’ and the children are involved in environmental programmes, and with the Wai Restoration Programme through the Northland Regional Council we have gained a good understanding of the importance of riparian zones.” These zones are a buffer from runoff and reduce erosion, improving water and providing shade whilst helping the ecosystem. “The students enjoy taking part in the activities and it is good to see them understand the connection and growing native plants and planting them.” Mr Ashcroft says as an enviro school a key element is working for good in the local community and understanding environmental sustainability. Together students can help create a healthy environment by taking action outside the classroom. “The organisations that provide the plants are amazing as we couldn’t grow the amount we need and there is also a cost factor. “Having farmers is a great way for the children to be educated on local issues that are going to affect their future. We really appreciate landowners allowing us to be involved in the process.” Year seven student Zak George says riparian planting is good for the animals because it filters the water and
helps make shade for them. “It took us a few hours and it is quite hard but it pays off once you do it as it helps environmentally. Other people should get involved — it is fun being outside in the mud helping grow the plants.” Keisha Gutterson believes it is important to stop the river being dirty. “For the future it will make the river cleaner for fish to stay alive and it will be better for swimming. Being involved is fun and we will tell our children and grandchildren that we helped keep the rivers clean for them.” Josie Mason from Year Six says helping other farmers plant trees is important as they cannot always do it alone. “The farmers need help and it is fun. Planting is important for the birds because they can make nests and find more bugs, and this will help tui and other birds. DairyNZ catchment engagement leader Helen Moodie is on the catchment group working to improve the water quality of the Mangere River, and worked with local farmers to get more than 3,000 plants onto dairy farms. Although the Mangere, which flows into the Wairua River and Kaipara Harbour has been placed towards the bottom of Northland’s monitored rivers in the past, this is no longer the case. In 2014 the catchment received a prestigious NZ River Award for

The Kokopu School group helped to establish 400 native plants on the O’Shea’s dairy farm
being the fourth-equal most improved river nationally. “Dairy farmers play a key role in community projects and riparian planting on farms will contribute to improving local waterways,” says Ms Moodie. “DairyNZ water quality scientists say keeping stock out of water and having grass filters or native plantings along streams really helps improve
water quality. “Robust scientific work has shown it results in significant reductions in waterway contaminants, especially sediment and E.coli that have been identified as key issues for Northland’s waterways.” NKONWM aims to improve water quality, fish habitat, increase fish stocks and build positive and enduring community relationships.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
by Ann Morgan
A young Mangawhai designer recently launched her range of children’s and teenage swimwear that she has personally designed to make swimming more comfortable in the ocean, rivers and lakes.
T
rinity Smith is 13 years old and has been designing swimming togs since she was very young. The swimwear tops are made so the girls can jump in the surf and not worry about busting out, and the bottoms have extra wide elastic which means they stay up in the waves. “When I’m not at the beach you will often find me drawing or talking about designs for togs,” said Trinity. “One of my favourite things about living in Mangawhai is surfing and swimming, and I wanted to have swimwear that was comfortable and secure in the waves. “My mum suggested we make some of my designs to see what they would actually look like.” The togs have since become very popular and Trinity’s mother
Corinne and her three siblings are all involved in the business and have set up an online store. Those living in the country and swimming in lakes and streams are also finding the outfits extremely versatile to wear. “The kids jump off jetties and use rope swings and the swimwear has proved to be super comfortable and it doesn’t come off with the active use,” said Corinne. “We went on vacation at Christmas and Trinity and her sister were biscuiting behind that boat on the lake and jumping off rocks and there were no issues at all. They were also jumping off the jetty at the Blue Lake and had heaps of fun. In all scenarios the girls were confident in their outfits.” The swimsuits are also

The togs are designed with confidence for active use such as jumping off jettys and surf lifesaving
proving popular for surf life savers. Trinity’s costume works well as the surf club activities can need robust quality for training. “Trinity’s designs are young girls’ designs, not women’s in small sizes, and we use recycled material from the ocean so our swimwear comes from the ocean and goes back to the ocean.” The fabric the family source is purchased
from the Healthy Seas Project — a group of volunteer divers in Italy cleaning up old fishing nets and rubbish which is at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. “The divers collect all the rubbish and old nylon fishing nets from the ocean and send them to recycling plants. The nets get made into nylon crystals and then nylon thread and this thread is turned into the fabric that we use
Trinity has designed her swimming costumes with extra wide elastic to stay up whilst jumping in the waves
for Trinity’s Swimwear,” says Corinne. “It is an amazing quality fabric, it doesn’t fade, and the stretch stays in shape superbly.” The material is chlorine resistant so if children are swimming in pools or are involved in swim sports the outfits can stand up to the chemicals in the water. There are three suits available with one being reversible which ultimately
gives four suits and Trinity has started designing her new range which also includes a rash vest. “We have also started designing for mums which will be called ‘Go Mums’ which means mums can also enjoy time with their children in the lakes, rivers and ocean.” Trinity’s Swimwear is available in sizes 8–14 and can be purchased online at trinityswimwear.co.nz.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
by Anna Harding Northland Agricultural Research Farm is run as an incorporated society and is owned by all Northland dairy farmers and managed by a committee of farmers and rural professionals.
T
he farm’s aim is to raise the profile of Northland as an innovative and progressive dairying region and to positively promote the dairy industry. It was originally established as the Northern Wairoa Experimental and Demonstration Farm in the 1920s, to demonstrate new techniques and provide training opportunities for young farmers and students. In 2001 the name was changed to reflect the Northland-wide focus it had developed over the years. The farm currently runs three farmlet systems of up to 80 cows each, giving it the scale it needs for research managed by Kate Reed, and employing a few farm hands. The trials are funded and governed by the BNZ Northland Dairy Development
Trust — a joint initiative between NARF and Fonterra. The trust contracts a science manager and a trust coordinator on a part-time basis, to ensure objectives are met. Chris Boom, a farm consultant with AgFirst Northland is the science manager. Before going into farm consultancy, Chris worked for AgResearch, which gave him extensive experience in farm systems and component agricultural research. In his role he is responsible for the integrity of the science undertaken. He is involved in a number of on-farm research projects around Northland along with farm supervision and farm consultancy. NARFs research has covered a range of dairy farm issues, including kikuyu management, gibberellic acid, split calving, endophytes, standoff pads and

nitrogen use. Under Chris’s leadership, the most recent trial has been set up in response to farmers wanting to reduce their reliance on imported feed, particularly palm kernel extract. So a ‘reducing reliance on imported feed’ trial began in 2015, with funding from DairyNZ and the Ministry of Primary Industries. Each farmlet followed a different feed plan — one only uses homegrown pasture, the second grows crops, and the third uses PKE to fill in feed gaps. During the 2015-16 season, the cropping farm had the highest production, then the PKE farm, followed by the grass-only farm. This season 2016-17, the PKE farm had the highest production with 1118 kilograms of milk solids per hectare, the cropping farm was next at 1053kgMS/ha, and the grass only farm produced 965kgMS/ha. In terms of profit, in 2015-16 the grass-only farm was slightly more profitable than the other farms at the $3.90/kgMS price, despite having the lowest production of the three farms. In 2016-17, the draft profit shows that with a $6/kgMS milk price, the PKE farm had marginally more operating profit than the grass-only farm at $2713/ha compared to $2670/ha respectively. The cropping farm was lower with an operating profit of $2207/ha. However, with the figures being sensitive to milk price, at $4/kgMS the grass-only farm would have come out on top with profit and with the milk price at $8/kgMS, the PKE farm would have. Chris Boom said that “at a $6/ kgMS milk price, there was 150kg/MS difference in production per hectare but similar profit levels between the grass-only and PKE farms. We all need to be careful we farm for profit not just production.

Lifting the spirits of each other
Farmers from all over Northland at a NARF open day on the cropping farmlet
“At NARF we measure the extra labour and machinery costs that cropping or supplementary feeding incur. Sometimes the simple systems are the best, though grass-only farming definitely has its risks. The use of PKE is going to be challenged.” The trial runs for one more season and the trustees are hoping for some challenging climatic conditions to really test the pasture-only farmlet. One of NARF’s main objectives is to make their research accessible to the dairy community. Fortnightly farm meetings, workshops and open days are held, with farmers and industry members encouraged to attend and join in on the discussions and debates on the management of the farm. International groups are also encouraged to visit. Last October, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce announced that New Zealand will contribute $4 million to a four-year dairy development partnership with Peru. Therefore, the Ministry of Primary industries reached out to NARF in June, asking if a group of 16 extension
officers from Peru could visit, as part of the Peruvian New Zealand tour. The group were particularly interested to find out about NARF’s seven-year kikuyu study, because in some areas in the Andes where the officers work, kikuyu is an important feed source for dairy cattle and its the management is not well understood. This was the third international visitor group this year for NARF. Most have a particular interest in pasture management — particularly kikuyu management techniques. Trust coordinator Kim Robinson said: “The seven-year kikuyu trial also attracted considerable interest from the beef sector, as sheep and beef farmers look to improve their profitability by adopting better management techniques. “NDDT is always looking at new projects and currently they are considering a new trial looking at how different farming systems cope with climate variability under the new PKE Fat Evaluation Index (FEI) limits for milk.” To keep up to date with NARF’s studies and results visit www.nddt.nz.

An afternoon out in the boat to dive for scallops turned into a different type of adventure for Maungaturoto farmer, Logan Diamond. “I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says. “I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.” Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital. “I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good. On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says. “I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster. Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.” The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . Logan remembers it well, despite his condition.

“ The guys in the helicopter were so professional. They came in and spoke with me before the flight and made me more comfortable about what was ahead. During the flight, they talked to me the whole way and kept me informed – even when we were on the roof of the other hospital, they kept reassuring me.”

From my perspective the only safe phosphate on our planet ever, was guano. When these deposits were depleted the ‘phosphate companies’ moved to Reactive Phosphate Rock (RPR). Guano contained no heavy metals and was full of macro nutrients and trace elements. This was a beautiful product, keeping soils and animals and people fit and healthy. When the Nauru, Banaba and Christmas Island deposits were depleted, the British Phosphate Company organised the import of phosphate rock out of Morocco in to both Australia and New Zealand. Phosphate rock is full of heavy metals; uranium, lead, mercury, fluorine, arsenic and cadmium — it has no trace elements but has the micro minerals phosphate and calcium. I find it hard to get my head around how RPR is certified, and I ask, how is it ‘reactive’? I know that in the making of super phosphate, the phosphate rock is blended with either phosphoric acid or sulphuric acid to make soluble enough to be taken up by plants. The amazing thing is that after all the preparation to manufacture ‘super phosphate’ according to research done in Ruakura
Avoid Drink Driving be THe SOBER D For A NIGHT
around 1953, only one percent of the phosphate rock is actually taken up by the plants with the eight percent balance of the phosphate going directly into the environment or locking up in the aluminium and clay particles of the soil. The acidic nature of super phosphate is impacting on the microbial life of the soil, creating erosion and acidity. The whole point about farming is to look after your soil. When you get that soil healthy the whole farm is going to be healthy, along with productivity! Some organic farmers use RPR on their pastures, but I still want to know how it becomes ‘reactive’. You could maybe lower the pH of the soil, but that would create more acidity and more problems. When I decided to use natural volcanic rock dust as a fertiliser I came up with all sorts of ideas to make the rock dust reactive. I even tried some of the ideas, but there was no reaction — nothing. However, quite by chance I blended together rock dust and our Oceans100 liquid fertiliser — still no activity. I needed two more products in combination with the rock dust and Oceans100, and bingo, 48 hours later I had a steaming, living, multimineral, microbial rich, environmentally
friendly fertiliser ready for production. The beauty of this product and all the other products we produce is that the ingredients all come out of the environment; they are part of the environment and part of your farm, unlike chemical fertilisers, sprays and drenches which are all artificially produced. As I have always said, farming is a natural process. All the materials we use on the land must come out of the environment. When we look at Mother Nature, she is a big part of farming. She has provided the top soil, the water we use — she provides the photosynthesis from the sunshine, she is an essential part of farming. Moving to Agrissentials natural system is not a leap of faith, but a positive move in the right direction, bringing health and vitality to all life. Improving joints (Part 3) Back in 2011 there was some interesting emerging research that suggested the traditional osteoarthritis supplements were perhaps targeting the wrong ingredient. Most supplements were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate with a smaller amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS). As a result of this research I completely reformulated my Bettaflex joint supplement. I did two things. Firstly I increased CS to 380mg per capsule and secondly added a 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. This gave a maintenance dose of 760mg of CS. Almost immediately clients reported better results on the new formulation. These results were increased where we added 1-2 months on a double dose (4 capsules daily) which delivered over 1500mg of CS. Over the last few years there has been still more quality research into the benefits of CS with knee osteoarthritis. Just last year a study compared 1,200mg of chondroitin sulphate 1,200mg with a leading COX-2 selective anti-inflammatory arthritis medication. The study was over two years and used MRI to establish the
benefits. This was a high quality double-blind placebo controlled trial involving 200 people over 24 months. It concluded that while both groups had similar improvements in comfort, MRI analysis showed the CS group had much greater reduction in cartilage loss. This finding was consistent with five other studies looking at the benefits of CS for knee OA. While most of the studies have been with knee OA, I have found that most joints affected by OA can be helped. While such studies are useful really it is all about what happens to an individual with osteoarthritis. This is why I prefer to create a personalised programme which takes many factors like age, weight, medications, diet and exercise into consideration. Please contact me for further information. Federated Farmers withdraws appeal Federated Farmers withdrew its appeal to the Court of Appeal concerning the Northland Regional Council’s jurisdiction to manage genetically modified organisms. Rather than pursuing the appeal, Federated Farmers has concluded that it would be more productive to sit down with the Northland local authorities and try to work where the new boundaries on their jurisdiction to manage GMOs in Northland now lie. “We commissioned an external review of the appeal ahead of the hearing, scheduled for late November,” said Federated Farmers president Katie Milne. “The review concluded that recent amendments to the Resource Management Act are likely to have materially reduced the prospects of the appeal being prosecuted successfully. “Federated Farmers considers management decisions made by central government agencies, such as decisions made by the Environmental Protection Agency on such matters as the use of GMOs should not be able to be undermined, or overridden by the whim of individual regional or district councils. “The broader principle is that citizens, including farmers, should be free to do things that have been approved by a central government agency. “We do not think that councils should be permitted to ban a certain type of
road vehicle that has been permitted to be used by the Land Transport Agency. “In the same way, if in the future the EPA approves a GMO for commercial use individual farmers should be permitted to use the GMO provided it is used in accordance with EPA’s conditions of release, rather than an individual council arbitrarily banning them.” Ms Milne said this would not preclude councils from managing the GMO for non-GMO effects, but the councils should not be able to restrict the GMO just because it is a GMO. “This is why Federated Farmers took this particular case, and others, to court. It was about trying to prevent costly and unnecessary duplication between national and local regulations. “This type of technology must be used responsibly and be appropriately regulated, so it is important all decisions around GMOs are managed robustly at central government level, not regional council level. “We look forward to engaging with the councils and interested parties accordingly, under the guidance of the Environment Court in the very near future,” she said.
What is Bettaflex? • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage.
• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.
CAREERS
John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Establishing an avocado orchard by Erica Faber
When embarking on avocado production, the difference between a great performing orchard and a poor one can come down to the site selection. To ensure the best site, consider a number of factors — soil, temperature, slope and aspect, water availability, wind, and spacing and planting density. There are more than 220 soil types in Northland, whereas other regions in New Zealand average only 20. Knowing your soil’s capabilities and limitations is the key to sustainable production in Northland. In anticipation of land preparation for avocados, it is essential to take samples for testing and to dig profile holes to assess the drainage and water table during times of high rainfall. Avocados have shallow, surface feeder roots and therefore a good topsoil is vital. If the land has previously been heavily contoured and the topsoil removed, problems will be experienced. If the pH of the soil is either too low or high for corrections to have a timely affect, tree health and performance can be compromised. Yields will be low and costs high with the added effort of trying to remedy the soil and drainage and tree health down the track. So, do your soil assessments, Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

corrections and retests well before planting. Avocados require well drained soils with good organic matter content due to their susceptibility to Phytophthora cinnamomi, a root-rot disease. In Northland, where there are yearly rainfall figures of 1,000mm in lowlying coastal areas, to approximately 2,000mm at higher elevations, a minimum depth of 1.5m well-drained soil is required. Even if your soil is well drained, be aware of the water table. A high water table resulting in waterlogged conditions is just as detrimental as poorly drained soils. To overcome these problems, drainage will be needed or planting will need to be done on ridges (hump and hollow system). Erica Faber is the orchard productivity manager for specialist avocado service provider, Just Avocados Limited. Fighting a pest plant with rust
A rust fungus introduced to New Zealand two years ago to wage biological war against Lantana camara is starting to have a noticeable impact on the pest plant in Northland. Typically a low, scrambling shrub with small, colourful flowers, lantana can be poisonous to people and grazing stock. It has thorny stems, strong-smelling leaves, especially if they’re crushed, and produces fruit that’s attractive to birds, which then spread its seeds to uninfested sites. “The Environmental Protection Authority approved the release of two rust fungi — Puccinia lantanae and Prospodium tuberculatum — to control lantana in April 2012, with both subsequently released in Northland in 2015,” says entomologist Dr Jenny Dymock. Dr Dymock works with the Northland Regional Council and the fungi were released in the Whangaroa, Doubtless Bay, Awanui and Kohukohu areas. The rusts work by reducing the growth rate and fruit and leaf production of lantana plants, one of the world’s most invasive weeds. “While puccinia lantanae (a blister rust) did not appear to have established itself in Northland yet, the leaf rust prospodium tuberculatum is beginning to have a big impact on local lantana populations, as evidenced by the number of lantana with dead and dying branches,” she says. The NRC was behind the original application to the EPA to import the rusts, part of a growing number of host-specific weapons in the council’s biocontrol arsenal. “It is great to see the rust — a native of Brazil — making
a noticeable dent in the local lantana population. “Many people will be unaware that we have a range of more than two dozen biological control agents already in use in Northland, with even more likely to be available in the future. “Biological control is the use of naturally occurring enemies and diseases to control pests and weeds. It is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of pest control — it is not designed to eradicate a species; instead it aims to keep populations at low levels. “Other biological control tools include an army of insects — including some which target other insects — and even tiny internal parasites.” The first step in finding biocontrol agents is a survey of the natural enemies of the target weed or pest here in New Zealand. “If no natural enemies of a Cable Bay-based entomologist Dr Jenny Dymock target weed or pest are found with a Cable Bay lantana plant badly damaged by a in New Zealand then potentially biocontrol fungus suitable overseas candidates from areas with a climate matching attacks just the target species Northland’s must be extensively alone, an application for release tested in a secure quarantine facility from quarantine is made to the EPA, to determine whether they will attack followed by consultation with the public any native New Zealand species or any and stakeholders.” species that is of economic value. FROM THE GROUND UP
Building your own home When building a house there are laws you need to comply with whether hiring a builder or doing the work yourself. Only a licenced builder can build a house, but you can build, renovate or repair your own home using the Owner-Builder Exemption, however you still need to meet building code requirements, apply for any consents, and let your council know. There are criteria you need to meet to be considered an owner-builder. You need to live in or are going to live in the home — this includes a bach or holiday home. Carry out the restricted building work to your own home yourself, or with the help of your unpaid friends and family members, and have not used the exemption to carry out restricted building work to any other home in the previous three years. A statutory declaration form needs to be completed to show you meet the owner-builder criteria before you can use the exemption. The form has to be witnessed and signed by a Justice of the Peace or someone authorised to do so and you need to give the form to your local council when you submit your building consent application. If you qualify you will not need to be or use a licenced building practitioner for any restricted building work. However, you will still need to apply for a building consent.
When you submit your building consent application you can apply for the exemption. Any work you do will be listed as a do-it-yourself job on your Land Information Memorandum for any future purchasers to see. You are responsible for the quality of work or any defects, and the work must comply with the building code and will be inspected as usual during your building process. As an owner-builder, family members and friends can help you as long as you are not paying them. Work that is not done by you or your unpaid friends or family members must be carried out or supervised by a licenced building practitioner who holds the appropriate licence class. They must also give you a Record of Work. With an exemption you can still hire a designer to draw your plans. If the design includes restricted building work they will need to provide a Certificate of Work. Your council will record the work and who it was carried out by on your Land Information Memorandum. If you decide to sell the home, future buyers will have access to this information showing whether the building work was carried out by the owner or a licenced building practitioner.
You cannot carry out all aspects of construction work, even with an exemption. Specialised building work such as plumbing, gas-fitting, drain-laying and electrical work must be carried out by a suitably qualified person. If you do not give your council the form with your consent application, you will need to provide them with a notice that you, as an owner-builder, are going to carry out restricted building work on your home. You will also need to give them a notice if there is a change in you carrying out the restricted building work or you cease to carry out the restricted building work.

Building with quality Using quality products to ensure a new build will not only be pleasing and will last the distance but all outcomes depend on good workmanship and expertise. A composting toilet is a choice many people are considering with their new builds and upgrades. The initial development of SWWSNZ’s Short Drop with worm composting system is ideal for remote areas or water shortage situations as it does not require flushing. The eco-friendly composting system is very portable and practical — it is easy to install, is good for the environment and has no smell. The toilet requires only one plant filter to process liquid and the tiger worms decompose solids. A deluxe model is available with a built-in water collection tank, hand basin and foot pump. Healthy homes for farming folk

Insulation will be compulsory in all rental homes from 1 July 2019 under the Residential Tenancies Act. But did you know that farm workers’ accommodation falls under this requirement as a ‘service tenancy’. You are also required to provide an ‘Insulation Statement’ on all new tenancy agreements. You could do it yourself but did you know that if it’s done wrong or not up to standard you could face a fine of $4,000 for not complying? This is how we can help you — we are local Northland experts specialising in retro-fitting insulation into existing homes. Our team have been doing this for the past nine years and therefore know the tricky ins and outs of ensuring your properties are up to standard. No one likes compliance and red tape, not even us, so we offer free quotes and certificates if you’re up to standard. We also have a flat low rate for all our customers no matter who you are, making us as competitive as the larger firms. We offer multiple property discounts as we know farmers often have more than one house to run their business so why should you not get a discount. The benefit of getting your properties insulated are, lower costs of power and heating and protecting your investments from the damage of rising damp and mould. However the biggest costs to

Professional and Reliable Service
A safe, healthy and durable home is important to your family, finances and future. It is essential to know that there is some design and building work that must be done or supervised by a licenced building practitioner. Generally this will be work to the structure or weather tightness of a home, and it also covers fire safety design in smaller apartment buildings. Licenced building practitioners are designers, builders, roofers, external plasterers, brick and blocklayers, foundation and site workers. They are licenced and their skills and knowledge are regularly assessed. If you choose an architect, project manager, or builder, they can help you work out what consents you will need, and if you are building on an empty section, this is more complex than altering or renovating an existing house and involves more paperwork and legal processes — whether you build from scratch or move a house onto the section. The rules about building change for different types of buildings — what they are used for and how they are built. Think about whether your project is simple, average or complex, and if it has more than one use such as a shop with an apartment attached. A complex project could mean one with innovative
design, techniques or products, and it can also refer to a difficult site or renovation. Renovations often pose more challenges and it makes sense to use practitioners with suitable experience and skills — remember to ask for references, get more than one quote and get a contract or an agreement in writing. Commercial and other buildings may need the services of design professionals, or engineers where a building consent is required because the plans and specifications in the building consent need to demonstrate how the proposed work meets the requirements b a r n s b a br an of thess building code. rs n d b a r ns hs sse hhd ees d ss are planning work to an existing If g a r a g e s h ge a dgr aas rg ae gs e you s building with a specified system, g a r a g e s www.theshedco.co.nz www.theshedco.co.nz certain safety and essential systems, www.theshedco.co.nz 0 9 4 2 0 4 4 4 1 www.theshedco.co.nz 0 99 044922040 24 404 44 441 41 4 1 1 9 5 R a p s o n R d R D 1 K a u k a p a k a p a 0 11 99 5 a p compliance schedule may need to 1 9RR5aappRs sao op a 5 n nsRodRn dR RDRd1D KR1 aDuK1kaauKp kaa aku apk pa akp aa pk the be amended. Don’t forget the children
Living in the country means a life of adventures and having space for creativity and old fashioned fun, particularly if you are a child. Enabling children and young adults to explore is a positive aspect of living in a rural environment, whether it be building huts in the nearby bush, learning to climb trees or enjoying having friends over to play in the tree hut — the opportunities are endless. Safety must always be a priority, including ensuring your decks and driveways are fenced and gated where necessary so toddlers and young children have a boundary to play in. Making sure waterways close to the house are secured off is also a vital part of early childhood safety — not just for resident children but visitors as well. When considering play areas, you can build your own or consider purchasing a custom-built playhouse or cabin and playground equipment. Custom Cabins is a family run business that has been building cabins, sleepouts, sheds and children’s playhouses for more than 25 years. They pride themselves on quality workmanship with all creations built to last, using a variety of timbers with the main timber used being treated pine weatherboard but different timber can be used if preferred. The kitset buildings can be taken into almost all areas they are needed and you don’t need to have building skills

as clear, easy to follow instructions are included to ensure an easy assembly process. The sleep outs are an option for that spare room for any teenagers needing more space, and a selection of playhouses provide a wonderful place for boys and girls to spend time in come rain or shine — these playhouses provide endless hours of entertainment. Creations with decks, lofts, gables and fortresses, ladders and slides are all part of the choices available for very young children to explore in and also for those who are older. Built with plenty of room for children to grow with, every playhouse is at least 1.8m high so most adults can stand inside. Check out the

range of garden sheds that Custom Cabins have available as an option to store the children’s bikes, scooters and sporting equipment. Brightening up the yard with colour is simple, and it’s easy to create an adventure playground by adding a swing set, trampoline or climbing frame — maybe a colour matched rabbit hutch or dog kennel. Children are as important as anyone else, and as you build from the ground up — always remember safety is the number one priority where little ones are concerned, and if you have a pool it must be fenced securely — and never leave children unsupervised.

There are many reasons rural families at times need to consider this option such as living in an area of isolation where good educational facilities are lacking. Leaving the nest is never easy but pupils who attend boarding school have the opportunity to make lifelong friendships and discover they are often presented with opportunities day students do not have. The extracurricular activities help with academics, and athletic opportunities are just a few. Students can be involved in fine arts, theatre, dance, music, and a range of sport including everything from squash and cricket, soccer, rugby, netball, hockey, and basketball, and equestrian facilities are often available as well. Many boarding school fitness facilities make commercial establishments look tame. Choosing the right boarding school is a big decision for families and one of

the first steps to find the right option for your child is to establish his or her requirements. Check what schools your child’s friends may be going to or if family or friends can recommend one. Listing education priorities will help with decision making. Consider your child’s talents, skills and individual needs. What are the must haves and what could be compromised? Look at the schools around your region first. Find out as much information as you can about the those you have to choose from and visit as a family as it is important your child is included in the process. Talking with students and teachers you meet will give you first-hand information about how the school operates. Ask if there is additional support for special needs or talents, or a strong emphasis on a particular
curriculum area of interest to your child? Are there options for different language and cultures, life stages, values and religious beliefs. Make sure subjects are offered at senior level that will support your child’s interests and possible career path, and investigate the support structure and routine including what after hours activities are available. The Education Review Office report for the schools considered should be checked. The reports provide information for parents and communities about a school’s strengths and next steps for development. It covers things such as the learning environment, processes and procedures, how teachers relate to students, the commitment to bicultural practices, how they review and monitor themselves, and their vision and philosophy.

With small class sizes, you’ll benefit from plenty of one-on-one tuition and will also form strong bonds with your fellow students of all ages. Protecting Tai Tokerau’s unique environment and conserving its beauty for future generations is equally important to us. We teach you to understand how to work in industry while respecting the environment. We work with our environmental guardians to deliver high quality education and training based on the needs of Tai Tokerau, to preserve its beauty and uniqueness for generations to come. With a NorthTec qualification, you’ll be ready to help grow our region, safely and prosperously. Nick Noble was already working as a breaker-out and skid worker in the forestry industry when his employer organised a group training for some of his crew. “I’m working with a company that is keen to upskill us and that pays well. Training on the job means you get to apply what you’ve learnt straight away. The training was a mix of on-the job work, paperwork, and study material to do at home, and it provided me with a lot more technical knowledge and understanding of why we do what we do. It also introduced me to the importance of having safe habits. We now put safety before everything else.” The training has given me more job security and has increased my self-worth.”

Game of two halves
We can solve all your milk cooling and pre cooling with safe and energy efficient solutions
To complete the skills needed for our consultancy we have encouraged participation from specialists in specific fields. Mark Dixon focusses on feed balancing and making the best of the choices of feed available. I have invited him to share his thoughts: To maximise genetic potential in dairy cows having a solid game plan is crucial. The game plan needs to begin at least 21 days before calving. Consider the season as a world cup rugby test match. History has taught us that winning that game requires more than an 80 minute performance. This is no different in ruminant dairy nutrition. Our transition period is our vital warm up but without a good transition plan we can’t expect our cows to perform to their potential. A strong start sets the platform for a winning season.

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys?
Avoid Drink Driving be THe SOBER D For A NIGHT
Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

As far as purchasing genetic potential goes, most farmers are buying the ‘Ritchie McCaw’s’ for performance. I haven’t met a farmer yet that has not been extremely proud of the genetics in their herd, but when it comes to formulating a plan around unlocking the genetic potential the conversation always comes back to cents/kg/dm, or residuals. I am sure the All Blacks nutritionists don’t go and buy the cheapest nutrition on the market and monitor the residuals on the plate or bowl as a gauge of profitability and performance Unlocking your cow’s genetic potential requires planning and preparation around nutrition. Your cows are looking for this every day when you pull the feed cord in the shed, the bat latch drops to the feed pad, or they make it to the paddock that you have chosen for their daily nutritional requirements. Despite what you may have been told, pasture is not a complete diet but luckily it
doesn’t take much to balance some of the shortfalls that limit production and health. After experiencing one of the wettest springs in history this season, one would say the first half has been challenging and your cows may not have hit their peak. Don’t give up. Holding cows at a reasonable production level once in-calf for most of the second half can make up for them not peaking where you would have liked. How many times have we seen the All Blacks come from behind and win. To do this we need to head to the changing sheds have a rock solid halftime discussion, and formulate a total farm system approach to ensuring your cows have everything they need to come through the second half of the season on top and be profitable. All Blacks have never won a test match at half time — it’s a game of two halves. If you want help formulating a successful game plan then please give us a call — Mark Dixon 027 546 2900

Hot and cold on the farm Adams Aircon and Refrigeration specialise in dairy farm refrigeration from vat chilling and prechilling through to hot water generation. Having worked in the area of dairy farm refrigeration for 15 years we have a good understanding of what is needed in our area. The PIB 25 – 160 is an example of the efficient machinery we have available and is designed for trouble free operation and reliability. The machine is designed specifically for milk cooling and is constructed in high quality stainless steel and lined with polyurethane foam for an excellent insulation and extra strength of the tank. The well dimensioned evaporator enables the storage of a large ice reserve which also guarantees a maximum cold transfer while the evaporator is made of seamless copper tubes and mounted in a stainless steel frame for a long lifetime. In operation it accumulates energy at cheaper night time electricity rates or alternatively operates from the input of solar panels. An ice thickness probe activates the eco-cool cooling unit until an equal layer of ice is present on all evaporator tubes. The water in the ice builder is cooled to 0.5°C and by means of one or more pumps the ice water is sent to the milk cooling tank or a pre-cooler. A high pressure air blower pushes compressed air through a PVC-collector on the bottom of the ice builder. This air causes sufficient turbulence in the water

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
THE WORLD OF
by Ann Morgan
Ruth Bookman grew up in Auckland city and became a country girl in later years when she took an interest in Kaimanawa horses and then Damara sheep.
“I
started riding horses and then my son Andreas got into riding when he was young so we purchased a block of land and rescued a few Kaimanawa horses. The land came with some sheep which we kept as they work well with horses,” says Ruth. “My neighbour had a Damara ram and we would help each other on our blocks. She chose the breed as they are a browser rather than a grazer. She didn’t have lot of land so this suited her as they fossick rather than eat grass. He came from a lady called Amy in Whakatane who imports a lot.” Ruth was lent the ram and bred with her flock as she liked the quiet temperament of the Damara. “The Damara can be quite placid and if you
are on a lifestyle block and have a small number they are ideal. “They have a very strong flocking instinct, keep together and don’t wander. If you call one they all come — other breeds don’t do this and it makes them hard to handle. Lifestyler blockers don’t have working dogs so you need an animal that comes to you rather than you chasing it.” Ruth purchased some sheep from a man in Whangarei that imported them direct from Australia but they were quite wild. “I had never met anything like it, they were like a deer and would go straight over the fences. I also had trouble with bad feet — they come from a very hot stoney climate and I have rich grass
Ruth Bookman became interested in Damara sheep when her neighbour introduced her to the breed.

LIVESTOCK rather than tough hill country grass and that makes a difference in growth rate. Their feet don’t wear down on our paddocks as we don’t have stones here, but you can get them trimmed. “I ended up removing those sheep but kept the ones I bred from the ram I borrowed for my original flock and am now on to three generations. “I don’t charge high prices for my animals because it is important for them to get into other people’s homes and help grow the breed. The larger the number of sheep in the country — the better the gene pool. “The Wiltshire is good to cross them with. They are built like a tank and are adapted for our Northland climate for wet, mud and facial eczema.” The Damara tend to be quite small bodied and leggy animals so if you are breeding for eating they aren’t going to offer much meat. “They are fat tailed and the fat is stored in the tail and the meat is low in cholesterol but it is flavoursome,” says Ruth. “They are hair sheep and some just part shed. There is no lanolin so clippers don’t go through them but that is an advantage as they don’t tend to get flystrike like Suffolk and Romney. “Damara can breed out of season — last August we received 250 mils of rain in a day-and-a-half and I had just started lambing and lost the lambs but five months later the mothers lambed and then they lambed again.

B&H WHANGAREI Ltd Damara sheep can be bred out of season — are goat like and enjoy foraging for their food.
I ended up with 40 lambs from 20 sheep in one year. I called the last one Ali Baba because he is number 40. “Being election year I named them after politicians. We sat on the veranda on election night and chose names. They start to look like the people you named them after — I have one I am sure has too much energy. “They can be characters — I have named Helen Clark as she is very black and white — just like Helen is, and Winston Peters looks just like Winston. I sold off Paula Bennett and Judith Collins and I have a lot of red so could have many Maggie Barry’s.” Ruth says you need to question why you want Damara. If you want colour in your paddocks and a quiet sheep they are a good choice. “Do your homework and don’t have them as a fad — have
them for a love of the animal. Ensure you know how to look after them and it is important that the animals are suitable for you and your property, and their health is a priority. “Lifestyle farmers like things that are a bit quirky as they are not doing things commercially. Damara are a little more like a goat, they eat trees and things and are good cleaning up rubbish, like the Kaimanawa horses will eat gorse and things that other horses won’t eat. “

Still time to plant by Grant & Julie McKechnie, McKechnie Nurseries
There’s still time to get plants in the ground in 2017, but remember — if you’re planting at this time of year, it’s quite likely you’ll need to water to get them through the summer.
STAY AFLOAT
THIS SUMMER
Think water safety
How much watering do my plants need and how often should I water? These are questions customers often ask, but it’s a bit like asking how long is a piece of string — there are so many variables in soil types and their ability to hold moisture. Cloudy days versus sunny days, and the different requirements of various species will also come into play. But as a good basic rule, one good, deep watering a week is much better than a light sprinkle every day. One good drink will get your plants through the driest week. Two good waterings are even better. But more effective than watering is mulching. With watering, the ground is moist only when you water, whereas a good layer of mulch (10 to 15cm deep) keeps the ground moist most of the time. Bark is a popular mulch but other products such as river pebbles will have the same effect. Grass clippings can also be used as mulch to conserve summer moisture, but take care not to pile the clippings up the plant stems because there is a risk they will cause collar rot as they break down.
FOR FARM OR GARDEN • Mondo grass • Box hedging • Photinia ‘Red Robin’ • Lonicera hedging • Flaxes • Eucalypt firewood trees • Bottlebrush • Pittosporums • Manuka, kanuka • Pohutukawa
plus lots more for native revegetation, wetland planting, hedging, farm shelter, firewood and garden landscaping.
GREAT PLANTS, GREAT PRICE: FROM $3.50 EACH, $300 PER 100, $2500 PER 1000 (ANY MIX).
Bark or pebble mulches perform a double role at this time of year; they help hold moisture in the ground but they also smarten up your gardens and suppress most weed growth. Other quick tricks for revamping the garden for Christmas and summer parties include neat hedges to define a space or give an edge to a garden — think English or Korean box, euonymus or Photinia ‘Red Robin’.
Even small plants, trimmed straight away to even up the height, and planted in a tidy strip of mulch, will give the garden a more finished look. And coloured flaxes and other smaller growers such as native grasses, dwarf bottlebrush, dianella and daylilies will help fill in unsightly bare patches — and they’ll attract birdlife to your garden.

Office: 09 433 1733 Eden: 021 0842 6587 Warren: 027 391 4777 At the handover from left: Errol Gray, NorthTec; Keith McGuire, Road Transport Association; Hohepa Rudolph — NorthTec, Mark Ewen — CEO; Barry McColl, Darrin Rhodes and Ernie Gent from Fonterra.
“It isn’t always easy for us to have the right resources to deliver for all our stakeholders, but now we have a truck and trailer for the next three years,” said NorthTec CEO Mark Ewen. “Here in Northland there are lots of young people who are seeking employment, and we hope this truck gives them a tool that they can use to gain experience and a springboard into a new career.” Fonterra transport training manager Darrin Rhodes said the company
had often discussed the shortage of drivers in the industry and decided to work with polytechnics to address the issue, providing the trucks to enable driver training. “It is a very generous investment in us,” added Mr Ewen. “It is an investment because we need to be producing more drivers from our region and employing more drivers in our region. It is an investment in us to deliver fully trained drivers back to the industry for the next three years and beyond.”
“These are the communities that our farmers and our people are part of, so being able to help out with resources that bring new opportunities is important to us.” The truck and trailer unit will be used for training students earning their Class 4 and Class 5 truck licences. The vehicle can also be used for completing driver competency tests and assessments and other training opportunities like safety inspections, mechanical inspections and truck safety days.

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL
A letter to the unbelievers Sometimes in life you don’t have to be very clever to work something out. Take for instance a quad bike weighing 300kg and you find yourself trapped underneath it. Your face is slammed in the mud and you can’t possibly lift the bike off. Toxins are making their way around your bloodstream from your leg being crushed, and nobody is expecting you back for another two hours. It is then that the game is up and you wish something was holding the bike up a bit so you could wriggle out. Anything would do but it’s too late now. The bloke at the bike shop said “only idiots with no training end up like this.” I remember asking him about fitting a roll bar. “Oh no,” he had said, “we don’t believe in them, they can hurt you — you’re better just to jump off as you go over.” I nod, thinking he knows best — he’s the expert and at least I’ve got my helmet on that’s making a big difference. I can’t move and my legs are so cold, I can’t breathe with the weight on me. End of story. John’s daughter found him crushed and dead after toxins in his blood had caused him to have a heart attack. For her, it was awful and since then struggles to sleep, has become anxious and doesn’t want to go to school.
QUADBAR
Mum and the other siblings are struggling as well — John was much loved by them and a popular figure in the area. This did not need to happen. If only he had trusted his common sense and set his bike up to be safer. The quadbar has been around for six years, and surveys tell us that it works brilliantly — sometimes it’s the simple things that work best. Roll bars are now on ride-on-
mowers, small tractors, tiny diggers and bobcats. It seems ridiculous that they are not standard on a quadbike. Quadbar Australis produces 100-plus quadbars a week and can’t keep up. Here in New Zealand the take up is much slower and once again surveys from Australia are glowing about the quadbar. In the end it is your choice, not the choice of your motorbike dealer.

All fired up
by Andy Bryenton
When it was first designed, the now-iconic Mini was a response to the shock oil crisis of the post war years. There was real trepidation that this tiny car — one of the first with a transverse engine and front drive — would be a flop. But motorists loved its cheeky personality, and its nimble handling made it a force to be reckoned with on the world’s rally circuits. A new model, produced by BMW, carried on the public’s love for this small car — although the second generation is actually not so tiny. But it’s the influence of the mini on other vehicles which is just as important, and one of its spiritual successors is doing amazingly well for itself in the Kiwi market. Suzuki’s 1.2 litre Ignis is, like the original Mini, a bit of an oddity on paper. A tiny sports utility with determinedly retro styling and a small footprint, the little machine from Japan has that same cheeky wheels-to-the-corners look. Inside, there’s plenty of scope to customise with interchangeable coloured panels, and a surprising amount of space. You only have to squint a little to see the resemblance to the classic little British rally battler — though there’s a host of thoroughly modern features fitted to the Ignis which the Mini’s designers would never have dreamed of. At less than $20,000 brand new, it also has a ‘retro’ price. This fun factor, inexpensive cost and a willing and peppy little engine under the hood have made the Ignis a fast favourite. Suzuki must be having deja vu, because their latest offering
is repeating the success story of the modern Swift, now also in its third generation. Putting the Ignis in the SUV section of the national sales charts puts it up against stiff competition such as the mighty Land Cruiser and Ford Everest, but the Ignis has gobbled up 6.8 per cent of the market share. That’s fantastic for such a compact and distinctive car. There’s another accolade which the Ignis shares with the Swift — both are short-listed to win the coveted New Zealand Car of the Year award. Once
again, competition will be tight with a stable of excellent motors lining up against Suzuki’s pair. A win for the Ignis as ‘best SUV’ would be a real coup, though even to have come this far is a victory in itself. If you’re looking for a compact crossover that turns heads, expresses your individuality and also presents a very economical fuel bill, it might be time to see what all the fuss is about. Book a test drive and see why the musthave accessory of summer 2018 comes with a chrome ‘S’ on the front.

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER
by Andy Bryenton
The recent Tokyo Motor Show proved two facts — that Japanese design is setting off in a bold new direction, and that electric and hybrid powertrains are here to stay. But the star of the show didn’t wear the badge of any Japanese marque you’re likely to have heard of. That, in itself is bizarre, because it is without a doubt the most prestigious product Toyota have ever made. While their robotic production lines can put together a Yaris in minutes, this car is hand assembled over nine days. The bumper alone is polished for 11 hours by a man who would, in the 1600s, have crafted samurai swords. A fleet of just five are owned by the Imperial House of Japan, and you have to be invited to an exclusive club to be allowed to own one. Nevertheless, the 2018 Century is deliberately understated — an anti-Lamborghini which is silent, unobtrusive, luxurious, silky smooth, and utterly on a par with Rolls Royce, Bentley and Maybach. It’s a classic tuxedo in a world of sports jackets and jeans. Out of time, but never out of place. Only three design changes have defined the Century since 1967. It’s the opposite of ostentatious, and has a reputation as the vehicle for the conservative, successful — but never boastful or vulgar — Japanese VIP. Resembling a toned-down Lincoln town car crossed with a big 1980s era Mercedes, the Century now comes with
a 4.3 litre Lexus V8 with an additional electric motor for utterly silent power. The outgoing edition was the one and only Toyota to be fitted with a V12. This was in fact two of Toyota’s coveted 1JZ engines joined together. It was tuned not for speed, however, but to move all three tons of the Century in refined silence, producing over 400Nm of torque at just 1200 rpm. Most of us will never see a Century, let alone buy one. But its very existence raises a question. Many people think
that the Hilux and Land Cruiser both peaked with previous incarnations. They, like the Century, were made by Toyota to achieve a singular purpose, and they did so with balance and sharpness. Wouldn’t you love to see what could be achieved if Toyota put the Century team on designing an ultimate, immutable, timeless off-road ute? It might cost a lot, but it would never, ever break down. And, as an added bonus, the Emperor of Japan could enjoy some off-roading on the weekends.

Small stature, big results by Andy Bryenton
Even the smallest lifestyle block demands something more than just a traditional lawn mower, which is why so many owners of the classic ‘few acres in the country’ opt for a powerful ride-on to tame the grass. But there are other chores which abound on the land, especially if you’re taking the plunge into running a small amount of stock, or if your land is more wild and rugged than you’d like. That’s when the allure of joining the big boys and buying a real farm tractor becomes appealing. But many lifestyle block owners will freely admit that such an investment is a bit beyond what’s truly necessary. A big tractor can be a daunting machine to learn to drive especially if you’re coming to the ‘hot seat’ later in life. Now, however, there’s a happy medium which may just tick all the boxes. The smallest tractor in New Zealand is also, paradoxically, the beefiest lawn tractor, and it comes in any colour you like so long as it’s orange. Kioti’s CS2210 is called a ‘sub compact’, and that’s because it weighs in smaller than some big zero-turn mowers. The classic setup for this machine is to fit a large slasher-mower to its central PTO and immediately begin smashing out neatly clipped paddocks. Of course it will also handle pulling a trailer, carting sprayer equipment and even mounting a dozer blade up front. A powerful water cooled diesel engine developing 21 horsepower gets plenty
of torque to those wide, soil-friendly tyres. But it’s beyond the realm of mowing where this step-up from the traditional lawn tractor to a real farming machine shines. That’s because the baby Kioti can handle a full range of tractor sized tools. Post hole borers, stump grinders, power harrows, disc cultivators — if you want your few acres to do more, there’s a whole utility knife of functions which can bolt on to the three point hitch at the back of this little machine. What’s even better is the classic combo that will fulfill nearly all the chores around your block or small farm — the full ‘JCB’ pattern with a big utility bucket scoop at the front and an articulated backhoe behind. Snap on this combination and feeding out, moving bark and gravel, trenching and drain clearance suddenly becomes a much easier task, all with the help of a machine you initially considered as just the biggest and best high-acreage mower on the market.
Bridging the gap between town and country — Kioti’s smallest ever tractor is a lifestyle block champion

THE BEST TIPPER JUST GOT BETTER ALL FACTORY TIPPERS NOW AVAILABLE IN AMT There’s always a compromise to be made when choosing the transmission of your truck. Do you need the performance and control of a manual, or the ease of an auto? Ideally, the answer is both and with Isuzu AMT, you can have it all.

SHANE WARD Serving Puhoi to the Cape. Shane is ready to talk trucking & transport now with 122 models of top selling ISUZU vehicles from 5.5tons & up in his portfolio.
Izusu AMT is a fully automated manual transmission, so you get the performance of a manual, but with two-pedal operation. There’s no clutch pedal in an AMT, so you can focus on what’s in front of you rather than worry about making gear changes. You can even move between manual and auto mode, giving you the ability to initiate the shifts yourself, or simply leave it in ‘drive’.

Pay attention!
Voltage for victory by Andy Bryenton
It’s already taken over the world of hybrid hypercars, where the biggest attraction on any track is the part-electric Porsche 918 or it’s LaFerrari rival. Next came power tools, where brushless motors and bigger, beefier batteries have spelled the end for weak performance.

But there’s been one nut that’s proven tougher to crack — the world of the back lawn. We all remember early attempts at corded electric mowers, and that stigma has meant skepticism when faced with a new breed. Well, not any more. Victa, who know petrol mowers literally inside out, knew that they would have to exceed to succeed. To convince the public that their new range of all electric mowers were up to the standard we demand — and let’s face it, we ask our mowers to handle some pretty gnarly grass — Victa packed in more power. The result is an 82 Volt, battery powered monster that’s hungry for even the meanest lawns. That big battery pack can be charged in just half an hour and lasts long enough to clean up your average section. If that’s not enough, the mower comes with two — one can charge while the other is in use. As you can imagine, 82 volts does the business — hard-core cordless drills and other construction tools pack in 18 volts and dominate wood and metal. So power is no issue — but there are other factors at play here as well. Imagine a mower that can be stored upright or hung up out of the way, with

Victa are no strangers to electric power — a tough new mower completes the range with voltage to spare
no fuel to leak out. Imagine, indeed, never having to fill that jerry can again to mow the lawn, or forget to do so on Friday, ruining your Saturday. No more pull starts, either, or stalls, or flooding — in fact, a fully electric mower could make taming the lawn as easy as using the old electric razor. The last thing Victa saw as wrong with old, corded mowers — aside from getting rid of that long, tanglesome

cord — was their flimsy construction. Their 82V range are made of solid steel, with a wide 21 inch cutting deck, sturdy handles, big, chunky wheels with plenty of grip and a high capacity catcher. Everything you’d expect from a top-fuel petrol mower — without the petrol. If seeing is believing, come and check out this latest step forward in lawn care soon at your local outdoor power equipment specialists.
