A report detailing a major review of NAIT, with 38 recommendations aimed at streamlining processes and boosting access and compliance, was released after a long process involving OSPRI, MPI and a host of industry groups including Federated Farmers. President Katie Milne, says the Federation’s position is that anything that can be done to improve the system and make it more effective and easier for farmers to use will be valuable. Recommendations include: enabling direct access to NAIT core data by police and other crown agencies to support stock theft and wandering stock enquiries, development of mobile and lightweight web applications to improve

accessibility for end-users, and the addition of other attributes in response to farmer and industry requests to support disease management, food safety, marketing assurance and animal production needs. “We don’t believe that the recommendations should be treated as some sort of smorgasbord, to pick and choose from,” Katie says. “The comprehensive suite of recommendations has been closely debated and scrutinised by experts and industry body representatives, and they deserve to be adopted as a whole.” Federated Farmers is looking forward to contributing to the consultation process when it kicks off in June.

Paper celebrates a decade by Ayla Miller

The Northern Farming Lifestyles is turning 10 and award winning saleswoman Betty Willets has been with it all the way. A far cry from its original 15,000 distribution days when it was called the Northland Farming Lifestyles, the Northern Farming Lifestyles now has a circulation of almost 33,800. When Betty first started with the Northland Farming Lifestyles she admits she knew very little about how to sell ads, but soon learnt everything on the job. Even after all these years Betty still gets a buzz when she sells an ad. “No matter the size it’s an awesome feeling. I love it,” she says. After the recession hit, farmers began tightening their purse strings, making advertising a difficult business to be in. However this did not deter Betty or managing director Allan Mortensen. Instead of retreating they decided to attack and in 2010 the name changed from Northland Farming Lifestyles to the Northern Farming Lifestyles, reflecting the increased distribution area. In 2016, Betty was awarded Salesperson of the Year at the Community Newspaper Awards. “I would like to thank the loyal people who not only supported the paper but myself with the advertising. I’ve got a lot

of friends out there now. I know more about their lives than I do some of my other friends.” NSMM publisher, Allan Mortensen credits the success of Northern Farming Lifestyles to a philosophy that has ruled the company’s founding rural publication from its inception, as well as applying to its stablemates that now cover Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu, Hawkes’s Bay and Wairarapa. “Our original concept of ‘looking over the farm gate’ for stories about rural people in a rural context holds as true today is it did a decade ago,” he said. “Stories about people, their careers, hopes, successes, struggles and desires — the myriad facets of life on the land — these are pretty much the threads that hold the fabric of rural New Zealand together. We also bring news and information into the farming households across the country that may often play an important part in many life decisions. “To achieve this we have an oldfashioned journalism ethic, employing

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Loving northland farming by Ann Morgan Colin Beazley sharemilks 350 cows on a split-calving farm at Wellsford and enjoys the lifestyle for his family, and believes it is a good place to bring up his children.

“I

am originally from Hokianga — my mum and dad were beef farmers and we moved when I was seven years old to Kaikohe and worked for 13 years there before my parents sold the family farm, and we all went in our own directions,” says Colin. “The family farm sold to Merv Pinny and we continued working there for two years. I finished school and studied accounting; but that was the year of the financial collapse and I was competing for jobs with people with experience so I gave up and went home to the farm. “I married Isabella and we worked for Kevin Brown in Titoki and when ‘Brownie’ sold his farm he didn’t want to leave us behind in our career so he helped us progress to 50-50 with this

job. He knows the owner of this farm, Neil Jones and we really appreciate how they both helped us with our life plans and got things advancing for us.” Colin and Isabella worked on Neil’s smaller site first, as it was more achievable financially. “We have two children, Erin and Dayton, and our herd is Friesian cross that we sourced from all over the countryside. A few from up north, a few from Whangarei and some from the original guy leaving here that we replaced. “They weren’t classed as the best cows in the world, but they have done us well and are great work animals. We believe what others call a ‘crappy cow’ still gives decent milk. During

our first year on unrecorded cows, we still accomplished 400kg milk solids per animal. “They are mostly grass fed with PK and hay during the winter to keep them warm and their gut full, so they don’t wander round hungry. If cattle are hungry they start roaming, but if the are well fed to their maximum capacity they rest and sleep. “Not many people go into 50-50 and split-calving as it is a lot more work than spring calving — you calve and mate twice, and have to find feed for winter. It is harder to feed a milking cow, rather than a dry cow, hence we supplement hay and PK — we get contractors in to make our big bales. “For calving, our worker Scott, insists on night runs, he is very caring and we let him run with that. “Isabella and I have been in Young Farmers for some five years, and really enjoy it. We joined in Kaikohe and had a lot of friends that lived in the area, but when we moved to Wellsford, we didn’t know a single person so the logical step was to join the local club. “I have competed four times in the young farmer of the year competitions. It is not so much the competitive side for me, it is mainly because I am a big fan of networking and socialising.” Colin believes when you are sharemilking it is about who you know — not what you know and many jobs don’t get advertised, because job offers and career opportunities are presented through word of mouth. “Farming has low times, such as low payouts, but we get through. When you

We upgrade our vehicle only when necessary, and we brought a ute years ago for practicality. “Our animals are our biggest asset and we want happy, healthy animals that keep on producing without problems; so we spend invest our money to keep our stock in good health. “It is easy to get them up to good nick as our stocking rate is low — we run two cows per hectare and this means

they cycle well and get in calf. We don’t lose that much profit from a low rate in comparison to other businesses. It works well for us and we like our laidback system — we are ticking along nicely. We have dried off half the herd at present and have two of us on farm.

Isabella helps as much as she can on farm with the children — they love the lifestyle. “We wouldn’t want to raise our family away from the farm; as we believe it is a great place to be brought up and this farm is a great property.”

We lived in Hawke’s Bay. Hamish was involved in the family business but decided he wanted to do something for himself,” says Nichola. His passion for the sea made the decision easy. “He came to the Far North on a ‘boys’ fishing trip with my dad and really liked it. Dad organised for him to go on a

crayfish boat, to see if he would like to be a crayfisherman, but you had to have a three ton quota to start which is a huge financial outlay.” Hamish stayed working 10 days on and seven days off whilst the family remained in Hawke’s Bay and one day he announced he had put an offer on a property. “I came to see the area for myself and liked this block of land with views from all directions, and that was the start of our adventure in 2004,” says Nichola. “We camped on the property and Hamish started researching Kina (sea

Nichola produces freshly made Kina and Eel pate’ along with other seafood delights in small quantities guaranteeing freshness

“He starts at 3am and hauls the line in at 7am. Ideally the fish are alive when they come onboard the boat so we can return any small ones. One restaurant client asked what do we do different for quality, as they get complaints from diners when they use other suppliers. Our catch is held in an ice slurry and processed with salt water. “We originally designed our special smokehouse to produce gourmet smoked eels. The experiments were really successful and we expanded to include local mullet, snapper, kahawai, and salmon from Bluff.” The Apatu’s use natural smoking methods producing food with depth of flavour, colour, and texture.

“We start the fire at 2am with manuka logs and we occasionally turn the racks to get a nice even smoke for around 10 hours. “It is all done by hand, not mechanically controlled and we cook up to 300kg of kaimoana at a time and send orders all over the country, including to supermarkets.” When extra fish is needed Hamish and Nichola source locally to support others. “All our fish is caught here in New Zealand. We supply a loose range of kahawai and mullet, along with a packaged range that is labelled with our branding. “You cannot take shortcuts to produce quality. Slow smoking gives the

fish fullness of flavour that comes from respecting our traditional methods. “Along with fishing, smoking fish and making pates, we offer a professional service for smoking and vacuum packing fish for others. The secret to our success is minimal intervention and having the freshest catch to start with. We are 100 per cent natural and preservative free.” Nichola says seafood is naturally low in fat and high in protein and omega-3. “Our pates are made in small batches to ensure consistency with natural ingredients and have become a popular alternative to mass-produced dips. “I grow my own herbs and our pates contain 60 per cent premium fish. We have one staff member on the boat and

two in the factory.” The Apatu’s say the best way to care for your fish is keep it cold and recommend to buy and eat it straight away. “It takes a while to build a successful business and we have had our share of ups and downs. “It is particularly harder here in the beautiful Far North as we are isolated, therefore a lot of freight cost. “Hawke’s Bay is beautiful too, but up here we don’t get frosts. We have a view of the sea wherever we look — it is amazing. We have taken a couple of direction changes along the way, but I think we are in a good place. Through the lows you keep going, you don’t give up.”

SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN MORGAN

Cheryl Eldridge is passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool so with her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough sheep station.

Cheryl’s grandchildren Liam and Quin Eldridge-Fright show off children's versions of capes created for The Lord of the Rings

O

riginally Cheryl started out with an idea to keep the sheep that originated in Denmark from extinction, whilst keeping the family farm operating profitably. That idea grew into a family business that begins out in the paddock and ends in highend fashion stores and on blockbuster cinema screens. “We are proud of things that are 100 per cent from New Zealand and have been doing it for 30 years now,” says Cheryl. The farm is medium to steep hill country with lots of retired bush on the east coast — six kilometres from the ocean.

“Barry is now semi-retired and our son helps me manage the farm, along with a stockman. Everything in our business starts with the stock — through to the shearers, wool classing and the artisans that create the textiles and the end products. “It is a lovely New Zealand story and other farmers need to know there are great wools out there that we need to use. Our products are chemical free, and I have recently expanded into eco-fashi on and we are looking at ecotourism.” Cheryl’s designs are exported across the world and even the royal, Princess Charlotte in the United Kingdom, is a fan.

Stansborough is recognised on the world stage for its quality, originality and creativity in designer textiles, offering a diverse selection of unisex accessories, home interiors, authentic movie costume pieces and baby wear. “With our amazing team we create bespoke designs — it is what we do well — we often produce limited collections specifically for clients, as mass producers can’t do this. “Many New Zealanders have some wonderful little stories, but like us, are flat tack all the time and don’t get to tell them. Our family are also protective of our creations and our copyright as well — you have to be.” Stansborough has a team of 10 staff at the mill based in Wellington, plus others on the farm when necessary, and the shearing gangs. “It’s a dedicated team effort — on the station we run low stock numbers and also are involved in honey production, subtropicals and are considering ecotourism for diversification. “I discovered the small flock of rare grey sheep in Nelson, which had been brought to New Zealand from Sweden 20 years prior. The elegant, fine-boned breed were traditionally farmed for their pelts and not particularly sought after in the pragmatic south for their wool. “The flock of sheep are now called ‘Stansborough Grey’ and in early 1990 they were dumped due to the share market crash, and when I found them I brought a core of 400 sheep plus all the embryos and semen that were with them. “I found embryologist Trevor Cook from Feilding, who had worked with them when first brought out to New Zealand. He has been with us all the way through,

9

Cheryl and Barry have spent many years strengthening their flock of ‘Stansborough Grey’ sheep

as we have strengthened the breed. “We have a ‘closed’ flock and our embryos and semen ‘Stansborough Grey’ is registered with the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Association. We don’t sell our genetics and don’t buy any in, as our breed is specific to the wool type we need.” Other coloured wool doesn’t have the same criteria, but Cheryl says that does not mean they are inferior in any way. “Ours are bred as a wool sheep for our particular textile production — we are a little different as not many people do it right through like us.” The sheep historically originate from an island off the coast of Sweden —

their unique grey fleeces were perhaps adapted to keep out the keen north wind, which scours this cold land. The wool was utilised by the Vikings for making the sails for their medieval longships. “Barry and I developed, and strengthened the traits that led to the finer, soft and lustrous ‘Stansborough Grey’ fleeces we have today,” says Cheryl. “Our aim was to develop a fibre suitable for spinning into worsted fabric. The line of sheep has been kept pure

and it took 12 years to create what is now a flock of 1,300 animals — now a unique registered breed in their own right, and the only flock of its kind in the world. “We also farm a herd of 80 alpacas, have forestry plantations and have created native bush reserves, to cancel out our carbon footprint and we produce high-quality UMF honey on the property.” To read more about Stansborough Station check out next month’s Farming Lifestyles newspaper.

Calling all fashionistas by Ayla Miller

Dargaville Arts Association is calling for those with a passion for fashion to register their interest for this year’s Dargaville Wearable Arts show. A group of local people and the Dargaville Arts Association performing arts section, with assistance from Dargaville Community Development Board, are picking up the challenge to organise and stage a wearable arts show in Dargaville. Paparoa has staged this highly successful event in the past, but the decision was made to no longer hold the show there. The opportunity for Dargaville to stage the event was enthusiastically accepted by the new organisers. Dargaville Arts Association deputy chair, John Pickworth, says the event is an opportunity for locals to showcase their talent. “The Dargaville Wearable Arts show provides an opportunity for people with the spark of an idea to transform that into a wearable costume, and showcase it in this event.” This year’s event in September will be divided into four categories: Moananui — great oceans; Living off the land — Farming (all types); Avante garde; and Reduce, reuse, recycle. “The inaugural 2017 event had an amazing response with 36 entries,” said association chair, Allan Mortensen. “It was a huge success, and a great start for our aim of creating a quality

Entries from last years successful show

annual event for Dargaville.” The overall supreme winner will receive $2,500 plus a trophy. The winners of each category and the People’s Choice award will receive $1,500 each plus a trophy. “The majority of entrants from last year are returning, so those considering entering need to do so as soon as possible, as entries will be limited to 50,” said Mr Mortensen. There will be two shows at the Dargaville Town Hall.

The first will be on Saturday night, September 15, with a matinee on Sunday, September 16 at 2pm. Category winners will be announced at the Saturday night show and the People’s Choice award at the Sunday matinee event. Entry is $20 for adults and $15 for students — however the category and fee is not needed at this stage for registration.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES Bee colony success Honey bee colonies have had a successful year for the third time in a row according to the New Zealand annual honey bee colony survey. The latest Bee Colony Loss Survey Report shows New Zealand has low to average colony loss rates compared to international results. “Just under 10 per cent of colonies were lost in New Zealand last year, consistent with the results obtained in 2016 and 2015,” says ApiNZ Board member and part of the NZ Colony Loss Survey advisory group, Barry Foster. The most recent survey shows some regional variation, and estimated losses are higher in the middle South Island and lower South Island in 2017, than in 2016. “We will be interested to find out more about the regional variation experienced this year,” says Mr Foster. The survey works as an important tool in monitoring the health of honey bees, which play a vital role in the country’s primary sector. “Apiculture New Zealand is pleased to see strong

SAFETY FIRST

industry support and involvement in the survey, with over 2,000 respondents from both the commercial and noncommercial sectors. “New Zealand’s history of good beekeeping practice, along with this country’s strict pest management regime and good biosecurity, have helped contribute to a thriving beekeeping industry. “However, there is no room for complacency though, as our industry rapidly grows in size and value, our ongoing challenge will be ensuring growth is managed sustainably, and our honey bee colonies remain healthy. “For that reason, it’s important we continue to have this survey to help gain a better understanding of trends and emerging challenges around colony losses. This will help inform any further research or action needed,” says Mr Foster.

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES ADVERTORIAL

Treasuring your bees ApiGold is a plant-based supplement naturally sourced from New Zealand and contains a significant range of vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds, which benefit your bees’ health and vitality. “We were making beehives out of conifer wood and discovered the bees were attracted to it, and this made us think they knew something about the benefits from that particular wood, that we didn’t know about,” said production manager, Jason Corden. “Last year during winter and spring, we used 40 hives in a trial that we split into two yards, a couple of kilometres apart. 20 of those hives had our ApiGold supplement with sugar syrup, and the other 20 had sugar syrup only. There were no other treatments or support provided, other than the ApiGold and sugar syrup.” During the trial, the hives were inspected every two weeks, with

the 10 traits measured and recorded, including parasite levels on each visit. “At the end of the trial, only one hive survived in the sugar syrup only group, and all 20 hives survived, and survived well, in the ApiGold group.” said chief science officer, Neil Gladden. “We observed better hive health, increased production, stronger brood and lower parasite numbers in the ApiGold dosed hives. This gave us confidence to patent the supplement and to launch it commercially.” Further studies are continuing to quantify more accurately how ApiGold is working for the health of the hives and the positive effects it has on hive health.

“We developed ApiGold out of necessity to improve bee health, using a cost-effective and efficient system. Globally beekeepers suffer major losses due to poor hive health, and ApiGold improves hive health, bee vitality and productivity. “Our trials have resulted in supplemented hives having more honey, more brood, higher vitality and lower numbers of parasites. “ApiGold also benefits a stronger colony build-up, bigger colonies, yields and effective pollination. It is used by

commercial beekeepers, hobbyists and queen breeders. The supplement is only made from the leaves and branches of New Zealand grown trees. We cryogrind the plant material into a powder, that is vacuum sealed in conveniently sized packs for beekeepers of all scales. “If you are feeding the bees over the winter due to lack of nectar, a few grams of ApiGold will go a long way. Our clients are seeing very positive results and we know that a healthy hive means happy bees, and we all know how important bees are to life.”

Caring for our billion dollar bees Bees are one of the powerhouses of New Zealand’s economy. They’re responsible for contributing $5 billion into the New Zealand economy and supporting one third of the food that we eat. They are also responsible for producing one of the highest valued honeys in the world — manuka. However, bees are no different to any other living plant or creature and are therefore susceptible to viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. This affects their ability to pollinate and for honey bees to produce honey. Dnature Diagnostics & Research is a specialised DNA company that has, in recent years, become involved in researching and developing diagnostic tests for these diseases directly affecting the health of bees. Part of this interest evolves from technical director, John Mackay, who became a hobby beekeeper seven years ago and lab manager, Tammy Waters, completing her masters’ thesis on the distribution and population of parasites lotmaria passim and crithidia mellificae. The team at dnature were the first to discover lotmaria passim in New

Zealand, using DNA diagnostics, in 2015. Since then they have expanded their suite of tests to include American foulbrood (AFB), Nosemas (apis & ceranae) and Deformed wing virus to name just a few. “The beauty about DNA testing”, says technical director, John Mackay, “is that it’s fast, accurate and quantifiable so you can find out the level of virus or pathogen in your bees, honey or hive. When you’ve got an issue with your bees, you don’t want to be waiting weeks for a result. “With DNA testing we can typically get answers to you in a few days.” The team has developed new assays for viruses recently uncovered and is continuing to research their relevance in New Zealand.

LIQUID

GOLD BY AYLA MILLER

Apiculture tutor at Dargaville Northtec, Jason Searle, wants to create a buzz about beekeeping and is doing his part to ensure the continuation of this vital part of the ecosystem.

A

lthough there are some challenges facing the New Zealand beekeeping community such as rising costs, increasing competition for space and high demand, Jason says there is a bit of a ‘gold rush’ happening at the moment. “A lot of people have started getting into keeping their own bees. Some people want to do it as a hobby and some people want to make a lot of money out of it. It’s come up alot on TV and in the media.” Jason has three years experience in keeping bees and first became interested when a friend started

keeping them. “I had friends who were beekeepers and I learnt a bit through reading books. But you need some practical experience as well. “Once you open up the hive you start buzzing out at the structure and the way they work.” He advises people do some research and get some hands on experience with bees before purchasing their first hive. “They are vulnerable creatures in a sense and if you don’t look after them right they will die. “The industry is also vulnerable and it is the people with a lack of knowledge that put it at risk.”

Northtec apiculture students get hands on experience working with bees

Jason says some of his students start the apiculture course with little to no experience; but they can soon learn enough to have their own hives and take what he has imparted home. “With this course they can get handson experience. Some students have hives at home now so they can take what they have learnt back home.” Jason also keeps in mind the bigger picture and the important role these small, busy creatures hold. “It’s good for the world to have bees because there is a massive decline.” Beekeeping, both large and small scale, is on the rise in New Zealand and there are 29 large commercial honey producers in the country, which is good news for those in the horticulture and food production industry. Not all countries are so lucky. An article in

the China Dialogue in 2012, reported farmers in South West China were having to pollinate apple and pear blossoms by hand; because of the eradication of bees due to excessive pesticide use and a lack of natural habitat. “Young beekeepers are partly responsible for the future of feeding the world. Our children are our future and bees are the future of our world. It’s about having that knowledge to keep the industry safe.” One of the biggest challenges beekeepers face is protecting their hives from American Foulbrood Disease and the Varroa Mite. Jason encourages his students to check for these more than the legal requirements of twice a year; as it is the health of their own bees and neighbouring hives that this endangers.

Dedicated to offering specialist solutions within the honey processing industry.

“From the hive to the shelf” “Our plant was built on time. The quality of workmanship is excellent and their after sales service and friendly team are fantastic.“

Contact us to discuss your solution on 07 579 0082 or visit www.crystech.co.nz

“When purchasing bees you must make sure the person is a registered beekeeper and make sure they have a clean record with all the correct paperwork.” Jason says even his seven-year-old son is becoming interested in bees and has his own bee-keeping suit and hive. “Our children are our future and our bees are the future of our world. I have gained a lot of knowledge over the years from speaking to other experienced

keepers. Don’t be afraid to share knowledge. Even though some of the methods seem to have been the same forever — be open to learning. There are some changes to how people do things. It’s this desire to keep the knowledge alive and protect the industry that drives Jason. “Don’t be afraid to learn new things,” he says. The next intake for the Apiculture course at Dargaville Northtec starts in June.

Understanding osteoarthritis

Carbon and cropping Is carbon atom technology going to be most important technology adopted by primary producers in the near future?

by John Arts

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear. An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage. What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals. While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die. The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones. More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process. Physical injury to joints increases free radical activity, which damages

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce. This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis. Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints. One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula. Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable. We at Environmental Fertiliser believe so, and we look at our present legacy of conventional farming — choked riverways and soils so depleted in organic matter and carbon atoms — that three times the amount of urea has to be used to get the same yields, as was the case 30 years ago. A five-year study of Soysoap (now traded under the name Carbon-PLUS in New Zealand and Australia) carried out at North Carolina Agricultural and Technology State University showed these results after starting in 2009! • Alfalfa with two applications went from three to five cuttings annually. • Alfalfa was noticeably different with growth more vigorous getting 1,070 square bales or 26.75 tons to 10 acres. • Wheat Soysoaped on 3.5 acres produced 72 bushels an acre, while untreated wheat gave just 27 bushels an acre — 45 bushels an

acre less! • Arguments could be made that the field soils were different, but soil samples showed Soysoaped fields had poorer quality soils. • Corn Soysoaped silage increased from 200 tons to 400 tons on 16 acres, or 12.5 tons extra an acre. • Corn Soysoaped grain production increased from 50 bushels an acre to 25 bushels an acre. • Soybeans results reported were 74 bushels an acre in best soils and 45 bushels an acre in moderate soils. • A product of this nature can go a long way in closing the food production gap that will be ever increasing, as the world population does the same. Webworm population explosion imminent

17

POSTDRIVERS

Warm, moist conditions mean the Far North is poised for a potentially serious explosion in the numbers of a voracious insect that can chew out entire paddocks of kikuyu virtually overnight. Northland-based insect specialist, Dr Jenny Dymock, has been monitoring the tropical grass webworm, Herpetogramma licarsisalis, for the Northland Regional Council since the first serious outbreak of the pasture pest on the Aupouri Peninsula in 1999. “This year’s warm, humid summer means tropical grass webworm (TGW) numbers on the Aupouri Peninsula have built up recently, to a point where a formal alert for them is now being issued to local landowners,” she says. “The TGW populations are currently at various stages of their life cycle. Larvae will move into pupae and then large numbers of moths will emerge over the next few weeks and if the weather is still warm enough, these will lay a vast number of eggs. As a rough rule of thumb, webworm caterpillars start to cause noticeable damage to kikuyu pasture when their numbers build up to about 50 per square metre and populations were already above this density in places.” Unless the weather cools significantly soon numbers of the insect pest could explode, at which stage TGW could become a serious problem for some farmers with sandy soils, who relied heavily on kikuyu pasture to feed their

stock. “When webworms build up to the point where you have hundreds of thousands per hectare, there are enough of them to literally chew out entire paddocks of kikuyu in just a day or two. ”While strong, fast-acting organophosphate insecticides could be used for TGW, that was the least-desirable option for most farmers.” Scientific trials soon after the TGW’s arrival in Northland — backed up by more recent trials near Awanui — had indicated that harrowing (which will break up the kikuyu mat) showed promise as a potential control, by exposing TGW caterpillars to light and desiccation. “Adult webworm moths have been able reproduce in areas at the tip of the Far A tropical grass webworm caterpillar and pupa North (north of Awanui) since the late 1990s, but at this stage have numbers at a number of Far North sites not persisted in cooler areas, even the on a weekly basis and keeping in close southern parts of Northland. contact with affected landowners. “At the moment, TGW could be found Monitoring results will be posted on at Paparore, Waiharara, Motutangi, the regional council’s website nrc.govt. around Pukenui and further north at nz/pestcontrolhub until the onset of Ngataki.” Dr Dymock is monitoring their cooler weather.

WINTER FOCUS

19

Simple ways to winter warmth Thousands of New Zealand homes have taken a step up in the living environment stakes, with government-subsidised insulation programmes; but for many winter still means colder temperatures and higher heating costs. There are a variety of simple steps towards creating a more comfortable living environment in cooler weather and one to start with is closing curtains or blinds each night. Closing the curtains and lowering blinds immediately after dusk will add insulation and reduce draughts. This helps radiant energy gathered through windows during the daylight hours to be held within the house, before a warm bed and a hot water bottle or electric blanket fills the bill. Taping bubble wrap to windows is a very good way to keep heat in and the cold out — this trick is used by many people. If you are warming your house with a heater or fireplace, you can keep the heat in with the use of a screen — these will reflect some warm air back, making it snug all around. Draughts can come in through doors as well because they are thin and sometimes glazed so can be very poor insulators, falling to 10-15 degrees Celsius on cold nights. Covering your door and the surrounding wall with a thick lined door curtain can eliminate most of the heat loss. Walls are better insulators than glass, but they still get

cold and let out lots of heat, and believe it or not, you can reduce energy loss by covering them with pictures or mirrors. Even a simple poster adds an extra layer of insulting air, raising internal surface temperatures by around one degree Celsius and cutting lost energy by a quarter. This is perhaps a modern twist on the tapestries that used to line the walls of stone castles to keep out the chill in ancient times. Another hint is having well-stocked bookshelves as a great insulator. One interior designer quips that thermally, printed books are far superior to their electronic counterparts. If the head of your bed is next to a cold external wall you can counter this somewhat by using a solid headboard, or move the bed away from the wall for the winter. How warm you feel in a room depends on where you are, even though air temperature is the same throughout. You will feel warmer if you position yourself closer to the inside of the house because the cold external walls are further away, so try and place your furniture next to an internal wall.

Creating a healthy warm home Paul Toth is the owner-operator of Heatsavers Northland Ltd, specialising in the insulation of exterior walls for existing homes with top-quality, non-toxic, no burning, sound dampening, very affordable, easily applied foam insulation — creating much warmer, drier, healthier, safer and more valuable homes by using heatsmart insulation. “As a builder with more than 40 years experience, I understand the nature and structure of residential housing, and the essential need for good-quality insulation,” says Paul. “House insulation became law after 1991, so effectively more than 50 per cent of existing kiwi homes have no wall insulation, resulting in mouldy, cold, damp, drafty essentially ‘sick’ dwellings. “New Zealand has one of the highest child asthma rates in the world, which has been attributed to the lack of insulation in older homes.”

InsulSmart has been available in New Zealand for more than 30 years, and proven in America and Europe for 50 years. The water-based, non-toxic and green friendly product is widely accredited, tested and proven by the New Zealand Department of Building and Housing and EECAS, and is accepted by local councils nationwide. InsulSmart is millions of tiny air cells with the consistency of shaving cream, which is pumped pre-expanded into drilled small holes through the cladding, and dries within 20 minutes. A high-grade marine filler plugs the holes, which is then sanded, primed and painted to leave the surface as it was before. “When I came across this product three years ago, I was considering how to insulate my 1981 home without ripping off the external weatherboards, or the internal gib walls.

FISHING, HUNTING & DUCK SHOOTING

Game bird season opens The first of the opening weekend shots will be fired on May 5, and should the weather conditions be favourable, Fish & Game are expecting above average bags to be harvested this hunting season. The wet and warm summer has seen higher concentrations of birds throughout the Northland region, and being prepared is the key. Hunters should ready themselves for all possible scenarios. Rangers will be out during the season undertaking compliance activities, ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. New Zealand Police will join the rangers for opening weekend to monitor alcohol and drug violations. The Wildlife Act 1953 allows the occupier, his/her wife/husband and one son or daughter to hunt on their property without a hunting licence. Many landowners do not realise that the Act only allows for these three people to hunt without a licence and all other family members are required to hold a permit. Game that may be hunted or killed in the duration of the Northland season include: Grey/mallard duck and any hybrid of that species — May 5–July 1– limit 12, all areas. NZ Shoveler duck — May 5–July 1 NZ Shoveler duck — limit 3, all areas Paradise Shelduck — May 5–August 5

Paradise Shelduck — limit 25, all areas Black Swan — May 5–August 5 — limit 15, all areas Pukeko — May 5–August 26, limit 12, all areas California and brown quail — May 5 –August 5, limit 10, all Area A Cock Pheasant — May 5–August 26, limit 10, rest of region and May 5– August 5, limit 3 in area A. Area A includes all lands north of a line running east/west, north of the Whangape Harbour, then along the main ridgeline of the Maungataniwha Range and out to and including all lands north of Whangaroa Harbour. There is no decoy limit and special conditions are: No person shall wilfully leave on the hunting ground any game bird(s) shot or parts of any game bird(s) shot. People may hunt or kill game from an unmoored camouflaged rowboat. Shooting Hours are 6.30am to 6.30pm. A copy of the game bird hunting regulations is available from local sporting goods retailers or contacting Northland Fish & Game on 09 438 1435 or online at fishandgame.org.nz.

Kumara Korner Enjoy Kumara Available Now

WILD DUCK PIE WITH FIGS, MUSHROOMS AND RED WINE Method

Ingredients 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium onions, diced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 3 ribs celery, diced 2 cups sliced brown mushrooms 300-400g wild duck breast meat, cut into 2cm pieces 250g dried figs, quartered 1 cup red wine 1/2-1 cup chicken stock (or water) 3 large orange kumara, peeled and diced 1/3 cup crème fraiche 2 teaspoons butter

1: Heat the oven to 160 degrees celsius. 2: Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a large, heavy, lidded pot (ideally one you can transfer to the oven, later). Add the onions, garlic, carrots, and celery to the pot with a good pinch of salt. Sauté for 10 minutes over medium heat, then add the mushrooms and cook for another five minutes. Tip the cooked vegetables into a bowl and set aside. 3: Return the pot to the heat and add the remaining oil. Add the duck breasts, letting them brown briefly on all sides. 4: Tip the vegetables back into the pot, along with the figs, kumara, wine, and stock. The liquid should barely cover the meat - add more or less, depending on the size of the pot. Season well and cover tightly, then transfer to the preheated oven and cook for two hours, or until the duck is tender. 5. Remove the pot from the oven, and raise the heat to 200 degrees. 6. While the duck is cooking, put the kumara in a pot and cover with water. Set over high heat and bring to the boil. Add a good pinch of salt and simmer until soft. Drain well, then mash to a soft puree with the crème fraiche. 7. When the duck is cooked, transfer it to a pie dish. Top with the whipped kumara, then dot with butter and season well. Bake for another 25 minutes, until the kumara is golden brown. Serve immediately

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

One billion tree programme under way

Collaborative efforts towards the ambitious one billion trees target are well under way with the first areas of land needed for Crown Forestry planting this winter committed. “The tree planting programme will benefit New Zealand’s provinces, our environment and our people — it is a big boost for the forestry sector and will create more jobs and training opportunities to provinces that have been doing it tough for a while now,” says Forestry Minister Shane Jones. “Our climate change objectives will be advanced, and our use of natural resources will be more sustainable and productive. We face a $36 billion potential liability by 2030, and planting trees is a sustainable and effective contribution towards our transition to a zero carbon economy. “We’re already seeing private landowners, government agencies, iwi, regional councils, and nurseries working hard to plant the other half a billion.” Planting will be lower in the initial years due to natural seedling and land constraints, but will then ramp up quickly. “Policies are being developed to avoid unintended environmental or economic outcomes, land is being secured, seedlings are being grown,

private investment is being stimulated and infrastructure is being developed,” says Mr Jones. “All of this combined, will see us go from 55 million trees this year, to 70 million in 2019, to 90 million in 2020. From there we will be aiming for 110 million a year over the next seven years of the programme.” This year, almost 7.3 million trees will be planted through various Ministry for Primary Industries schemes — about half of which will be indigenous species. “We want to enable planting of a mix of permanent and harvestable forestry, using both exotic and native tree species on private, public and Maori-owned land. Species include radiata pine, red wood, totara, eucalyptus, Douglas fir and manuka. “We are finalising an agreement with Landcorp to plant one million trees this winter and another million trees next year — about 2,000 hectares in total — and a review of its portfolio to identify any other potential land for planting.” “We are also opening applications for the Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS),

Shane Jones, Forestry Minister

which provides $1,300 of government funding per hectare for new forests between five and 300 hectares. We want to exhaust the full $6.5 million of available funding. Applications for the AGS must be received by MPI by May 14 2018. For further information visit mpi.govt.nz/ags.

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Forme Consulting Group Limited — Tel: 027 448 0547 Email: info@forme.co.nz, or visit our Website: www.forme.co.nz

That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

www.nzwood.co.nz

Don’t be persuaded to harvest now without full independent forestry advice. Be sure to get full value for your crop. We want you to have a positive and profitable experience so that you will plant a new crop and ensure your children reap the benefits in another 30 years. Forme Consulting Group is a long established forestry consulting business and we continually hear stories of disaffected forest owners who feel they haven’t received full value for their forest crop at harvest and don’t bother to establish a new crop. To get the job done thoroughly requires good planning of engineering, inventory, marketing options and a fair valuation, steps that are far too often overlooked by owners who don’t have sufficient knowledge to maximise value of their harvest. Forme has no affiliations with log buyers, log marketing companies, logging contractors or agents. We do not trade logs or lumber so we can independently advise on harvest planning and marketing options that are available to you — the forest owner, to maximise your returns.

Mechanised Cable Harvesting Ltd, is the first in New Zealand to become a certified forestry contractor.

Forest harvesting, forest advisors, tree buyers

“That means it has an industrywide stamp of approval for its safety practices,” says National Safety Director of the Forest Industry Safety Council (FISC), Fiona Ewing. The company is run by Nelson locals Ross Wood, Hamish Matthews and Nathan Taylor. “This is big step for forestry and is a sign of the industry’s growing professionalism,” Ms Ewing says. “Certification will help lift safety standards — which is good for contractors, for workers and for forest owners and managers.” Lifting standards is important because while safety has improved, forestry is still a high-risk job. Mr Taylor says that becoming the first Safetree Certified Contractor was a great thing. “What I like about this scheme is that it goes beyond the paperwork,” he says. “It includes an on-site audit that looks at things like whether you’ve got a good crew culture. That’s important because your culture affects what happens on the ground every day — whether people take ownership and look after each other. It is really important in making a good workplace. The certification process wasn’t onerous and took less than a day

Pay attention! and a half of my time. If you run a good operation you should be proactively doing all these things anyway. “Putting a guy in the cab of a machine is a lot safer than putting him in a hard hat.” Ms Ewing says contractors have to comply with safety standards set by forest owners and managers and pass safety audits, but until now there was no single certification system that applied across the industry. “Safetree Contractor Certification provides that industry-wide recognition.” SILVICOM LIMITED is locally owned and operates from Whangarei. We are committed to providing high quality services throughout the Northland region and are happy to come to your forest block to price a job.

More than 100 contractors have begun the certification process and approximately 130 workers have been certified under the Safetree Professional Forest Worker scheme. Both schemes were set up by FISC, in partnership with the industry. FISC also runs the safetree.nz website, which provides tailor-made safety information to those working in forestry.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Managing risks is also a legal requirement and risk management is about knowing what hazards create risks in your workplace and then managing them. That means taking reasonably practicable steps to eliminate the risks, or if you can’t eliminate a risk, taking reasonably practicable steps to minimise it. Key things to remember about managing hazards and their risks in forestry workplaces include businesses carry most of the responsibility (the legal duty) to keep workers and others healthy and safe. You need to understand and focus on your critical risks — the ones most likely to cause serious injury or death. These will be different for different types of businesses. The law identifies ‘particular risks’ that must be managed in a specific way and how a business manages a risk should be in proportion to how bad any injuries or damage could be, and the likelihood of the risk happening. Prioritise eliminating a risk — if that’s not possible, have strong effective minimisation controls. Common controls can usually be found and used for common risks. Consult the

forestry ACoP or other guidance, or ask another forestry operator what they do. Different businesses involved in an operation must all consult, cooperate and coordinate with each other, where they have a shared duty. This includes workplace risks. This is a legal requirement, as well as good practice. Make sure you are familiar with all known site-specific risks — what could go wrong on your site and set-up; and

follow a good process for managing any variations or changes throughout the day that could make work unsafe. Remember the morning tailgate meeting is a great place to start. Monitor and review health and safety systems and processes from time to time to make sure they are fit for purpose and effective, especially after an accident or when planning or doing a new task.

At Just Avocados we have the same passion and are excited about seeing new orchards and old orchards come to life, by starting off on the best foot with the best advice,” says Andrew. “We have a highly capable team and this, coupled with the expertise and knowledge of the current Avoworks team, will ensure we carry on the great work provided to growers.” Andrew and the team will be working on some key additions to the Avoworks

Kawakawa dairy farmer, Daniel Bradbury, has been named the Northern FMG Young Farmer of the Year and took out the title after winning the hotly-contested Northern Regional Final in Kerikeri. Daniel grew up in a town near Sheffield, in the United Kingdom and moved to New Zealand to seize opportunities in the dairy industry. It was the 28-year-old’s third attempt at winning the title and the event saw seven finalists tackle a series of gruelling modules, including a fastpaced agri-knowledge quiz. “I’m pretty blown away, I didn’t pick it,” he said. “Taking part in the contest is a good way to benchmark yourself and it pushes you out of your comfort zone. It’s also an opportunity to learn new skills.” He settled in Northland with his partner in 2014, and has been an active member of Bay of Islands Young Farmers and is in his first season contract milking 515 cows at Kawakawa and hopes to be 50-50 sharemilking within three years. “We moved to New Zealand because there are more opportunities to progress if you work hard,” he said. Daniel won almost $12,000 worth of prizes, including an XR150 Honda farm bike. He also won the Massey University Agri-Growth Challenge and the Meridian

It’s the 50th anniversary of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year — an iconic agricultural competition which began in 1969. Second place went to Tim Dangen, who jointly owns a farm with his parents at Muriwai. It was his first time

He was born and bred in Mangatawhiri, North Waikato, where his parents were farming after his father returned from serving in the second world war. “I have always been passionate about all facets of biology. I started working in orchards and glasshouses growing tomatoes and beans when I was still at college,” said Grant. Qualified fitter and turner, John Kenworthy-Thompson, who helps run a family dairy and beef business at Maungaturoto, won the AgriSports Challenge. Kamo dairy farm manager, Clement Lafon, won the coveted Ravensdown Agri-Skills Challenge.

Keeping grass down makes them a good lawn mower if you have a couple of acres. In Australia, Alpaca are used to guard sheep because they will scare away the foxes. “We tend to use them here more as companion animals or for fleece. They are aware of everything going on around them and if something goes on next door they stand down the fenceline watching before you see it. New chairman elected Southland sheep and beef farmer, Andrew Morrison, is the new chairman of Beef + Lamb New Zealand and takes the chair after four years on the board representing the Southern South Island region. Along with his wife Lisa, he farms a total of 1,030ha of breeding and finishing units spread between Southland and Otago. He actively farms the couple’s 150ha home farm near Gore — although Lisa is in charge of the day-to-day management. The couple has two children, Bryn and Kelly. “I love the sector we operate in and it has treated us very well. It is not always easy, but it is a truly great values-based sector to be part of. These farming values flow into rural communities,” says Mr Morrison. “I am a strong believer in the contribution healthy rural communities make to the wider economy. I see merit in supporting and enhancing the unbelievable potential we have in agriculture and in rural communities.” Previous chairman, James Parsons, was chairman for four years and had been on the B+LNZ Board representing the Northern North Island region for nine years. “James provided leadership during some challenging times in the industry, especially with climatic events,

biosecurity breaches and farming’s environment footprint being called into question,” said Mr Morrison. Mr Morrison will be leading B+LNZ as the levy-funded organisation implements a revised strategy. This strategy puts more emphasis on enhancing farmers’ environmental position, unlocking market potential and greater government and public insight engagement — while still supporting farming excellence. “Alongside continuing our investment in Extension programmes and ongoing research and development to support farmers, our key priorities are the launch of the environment strategy and Red Meat Story. These are critical to setting up the sector for a strong future,” he says. “If we get these right, we will go a long way to achieving our ultimate goal of profitable farmers, thriving rural communities, valued by all New Zealanders. “One of the most important elements of the new strategy and recent structural changes is the focus on developing

ON THE FARM

insights. B+LNZ is now constantly looking ahead and undertaking research and developing thinking to position the sector for future challenges and opportunities. The Alternative Proteins report is an example of the kind of substantive work we want to produce more consistently and there is further work in the pipeline — particularly around the environment. “The red meat sector is in a strong position with an unprecedented global demand for protein. We need to leverage our competitive advantage of producing natural grass-fed hormone and antibiotic free sheep and beef.”

Farmers wanted to join project

Farming project Extension 350 wants farmers who are ready to upskill and grow their business for their newest farming clusters. Four new clusters are underway in the region — two sheep and beef clusters for farmers in southern and mid-Northland from Helensville to north of Kaikohe, and two dairy clusters in the Far North and mid-Kaipara. Launched last year, Extension 350 is the first programme of its kind in New Zealand. Farmer-led and farmerfocussed, it helps farmers across Northland share knowledge and gain access to specialist advice.

“There is huge potential for economic growth in Northland farming. Farming isn’t just about production; it’s about profitability, environmental sustainability and the wellbeing of not just farmers, but our farming community. That’s why Extension 350 exists,” said project manager, Luke Beehre. Ten geographically-based clusters of farmers are involved in the project — three sheep and beef, and seven dairy. Each cluster has five target farmers who

work one-on-one with a mentor farmer and consultant. Five associate farmers are invited to learn alongside the target farmers and share the journey and three more dairy clusters will be set up in 2019. “Extension 350 is focussed on the farm and for the farmer. For target farmers, it’s about establishing your goals for your farming business and having support to make them happen. Associate farmers join the journey and can see what works and take those learnings to their own farms,” says Luke. “We are recruiting for target, mentor or associate farmers in the midNorthland sheep and beef clusters, as well as the dairy cluster in the Far North. We also have limited spaces available for associate farmers in the Whangarei north, Whangarei south and mid-Kaipara dairy clusters. Broadwood brothers, Angus and Peter McCraith, own one of the farms involved in the first sheep and beef cluster. As

target farmers, Extension 350 gave them a chance to best use their farm asset and combined skills, along with those of their farm manager, Doug Booth. “Having the Extension 350 panel involved meant plenty of robust discussion and much faster, easier decisions,” said Peter. “You have nothing to lose. One of our main fears was having others analyse and critique everything. It’s not like that at all. Your consultant and mentor farmer are there to help and support you, bringing all their knowledge and expertise to the table.” Extension 350 has widespread support from industry. It is a project within the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan and is supported by Northland Inc, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Northland Regional Council, and the Ministry for Primary Industries. BUSINESS PROFILE

The reliable trailer

Quality, Strong, Reliable and Affordable

Single Axle Trailers | Tandem Axle Boat Trailers | Spare Wheels

Alpha Trailers Ltd was recently opened by Stuart and Paula Duff at 165a Stanners Road, Kerikeri — supplying tough, personally designed boat and road trailers. Stuart is no stranger to the trailers and has worked in the industry for many years. “I have been a farmer all my life with a farming and engineering background.” says Stuart. “We love it here and providing topquality trailers for all types of people, from near and far is exciting. I originally started work in the trailer industry with a friend and then elsewhere, until Paula and I decided it was time to start our own business. We have designed the trailers ourselves and have made them economically viable. “We are manufacturing through a company we have known for many years and the business is growing. They are multifaceted and convenient for farmers, construction workers, builders and gardeners.” Strength, durability and versatility are important and our tandem trailers can carry up to 2.5 tonnes. The trailers have front and rear gates for increased convenience, with leavers and a special clip on the toggle for extra safety to help keep the tail gates closed. “Listening to the customer is important to us, and

their feedback helped with our designing. These good-quality and affordable trailers are great for collecting hay, horse feed, cement and wood — we can put ramps on the back for the digger or lawn mowers — the versatility is incredible. “We are conscious of Kiwi needs and we want trailers that last. They are fully galvanised and have submersible LED lights. Each trailer can be modified upon request. “Knowing and understanding what people need is important and our boat trailers will carry 95 per cent of smaller trailer boats that are made in this country. Alpha Trailers are built to New Zealand specifications, for New Zealanders, not what other countries want.” Each trailer comes with a five year warranty on the frame, a two year warranty on additional extras such as lights, and one year warranty on bearings and hubs. ADVERTORIAL

A letter to the unbelievers Sometimes in life you don’t have to be very clever to work something out. Take for instance a quad bike weighing 300kg and you find yourself trapped underneath it. Your face is slammed in the mud and you can’t possibly lift the bike off. Toxins are making their way around your bloodstream from your leg being crushed, and nobody is expecting you back for another two hours. It is then that the game is up and you wish something was holding the bike up a bit so you could wriggle out. Anything would do but it’s too late now. The bloke at the bike shop said “only idiots with no training end up like this.” I remember asking him about fitting a roll bar. “Oh no,” he had said, “we don’t believe in them, they can hurt you — you’re better just to jump off as you go over.” I nod, thinking he knows best — he’s the expert and at least I’ve got my helmet on that’s making a big difference. I can’t move and my legs are so cold, I can’t breathe with the weight on me. End of story. John’s daughter found him crushed and dead after toxins in his blood had

caused him to have a heart attack. For her, it was awful and since then struggles to sleep, has become anxious and doesn’t want to go to school. Mum and the other siblings are struggling as well — John was much loved by them and a popular figure in the area. This did not need to happen. If only he had trusted his common sense and set his bike up to be safer. The quadbar has been around for six years, and surveys tell us that it works brilliantly — sometimes it’s the simple things that work best. Roll bars are now on ride-on-mowers, small tractors, tiny diggers and bobcats. It seems ridiculous that they are not standard on a quadbike. Quadbar Australis produces 100-plus quadbars a week and can’t keep up. Here in New Zealand the take up is much slower and once again surveys from Australia are glowing about the quadbar. In the end it is your choice, not the choice of your motorbike dealer.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

WHEELS

Style plus substance by Andy Bryenton

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader. These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back to fighting 4x4s, both the new Jeep Compass and the Range Rover Velar have come a long way, switching their fatigues for a stylishly cut suit in the case of the English offering, and the calculated designer ruggedness of a modern outdoorsman for the Jeep. The Jeep takes the lead, in terms of blue-collar pricing and built-in ruggedness, with the Trailhawk variant boasting all the hallmarks of a brand forged on trails like the challenging Rubicon. Its 2.4 litre Tigershark series petrol engine delivers 229 Nm of torque to the ground via the tried and tested Jeep Active Drive Low system — and no less than nine gears in a smooth automatic transmission. This is no

school run faux-wheel-drive — underbody skid plates, red competition style tow hooks, hill descent control and even a rock crawling mode, make this the kind of machine that doesn’t understand the concept of getting stuck. At the same time, the cabin is a leather-wrapped cocoon of calm, and while the Grand Cherokee heads up the range for luxury, this middle-sized contender provides plenty of space, plenty of comfort and real off-road chops. Of course, the Range Rover Velar is also the middle child of the family, weighing in below the formidable Sport and above the Evoque. It’s a study in style, looking jaw-dropping from every angle, but there’s been no compromise on power — a V6 under the hood delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions too. While the cabin is appointed with luxurious leather and suede, unobtrusive infotainment and climate-controlled hush, outside this machine can tackle more than just the gravel driveway of

Pay attention!

Old adage, new edge by Andy Bryenton

Those who know a bit about motoring history, will know that Lotus boss Colin Chapman famously said that the recipe for a better car, was to simplify and add lightness.

Now from the exotic to the more prosaic — what happens when this philosophy is applied to one of the most popular small runabouts in the world? The Suzuki Swift is now in its fourth modern generation, and that means a sporty alternative is also on the tarmac. So how have the research and development team from the company, most famous for their face-meltingly fast superbikes, made this lively little machine out-supermini the actual Mini? By taking a leaf from Mr Chapman’s book in the chassis department. The Swift Sport is based on the same HEARTECT platform as the tiny Ignis crossover, and while much of its bodywork seems larger — that aggressive grille, chin spoiler, flared arches and more — this is more to do with stance than added mass. The allimportant torque to weight ratio, which dictates how much power there is under the hood to offset the weight of the vehicle, has been pared down to a healthy 4.2 kilos to one Newton Metre. When it comes to producing that power, Suzuki have taken a design cue from way back in the 1970s. When car makers then wanted to make a sporty model of their usual family car, they

weren’t shy about simply shoehorning in the biggest V8 they could find in the parts bin. While Suzuki may not be in the business of crafting V8 engines — though many think that if they would just weld two Hayabusa blocks together they could rule the world — they have been bold enough to equip the new Swift

Sport with the turbocharged engine from a full-sized SUV. In these modern times, taking the 1.4 turbo BoosterJet mill from the Vitara and landing it under the hood of the much lighter and more nimble Swift Sport, is the equivalent of bolting a Porsche boxer engine under the tail of the popular VW Beetle in the 1960s.
