will also need to have a free farm environment plan or planting plan (provided through NRC) completed for their property to qualify. “After planting, council staff will check to confirm it has been carried out as specified by the plan and depending on where properties are located and what funding landowners are eligible for either half or all the poles’ purchase price will be refunded. :This is in line with the council’s Environment Fund fencing programme and ensures that funds are used appropriately. “When allocating poles, the council gives priority to applicants in areas identified as having a high erosion risk. It has occasionally encountered issues with incorrect placement of trees by their new owners, one of the main drivers behind its new ‘upfront pole payment then rebate’ approach. “Obviously mistakes do happen from time to time, but when pole stocks are so limited, we are keen to do whatever we can to ensure they are all planted correctly and that landowners are aware of the future maintenance required. It is common sense from our perspective to ensure our erosion-control objectives are met and that any trees supplied are planted in the best way to achieve this.” To secure poles, contact council land management staff on 0800 002 004 to arrange a consultation/site visit and develop a free planting plan.

Juniors make grand final A talented duo from Northland has qualified for the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Hawke’s Bay. Whangarei Boys High School student Archer Walton, 15, and Dargaville High School student Jackson Nichols, 16, won the hotly-contested Northern regional final. The pair competed with some 60 high school students from across the Northern region working in pairs to tackle a raft of challenges. The FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition was formerly known as TeenAg. The events are a key part of the work being done by NZ Young Farmers to attract students into the agri-food sector. Archer and Jackson teamed up after competing against each other with their siblings in last year’s TeenAg event. “I am stoked and feeling a lot more confident about nationals this time around,” said Archer. “I really enjoyed the Lincoln University soils module and the Massey University module about the digestive systems of farm animals. The technology module, which involved operating a New Holland tractor fitted with a GPS unit, was pretty cool as well. “We both represented the region at the grand final in Invercargill. It was a great experience, and I got to know him quite well. I am from a sheep and beef farm, and Jackson is from a

PROTECTING THE

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Beekeepers at Ngahere Bee Club honoured Mary Bumby recently as the person known for introducing the first honey bees to New Zealand 180 years ago.

Photo credit - Karen Cory Toussaint

“M

ary sailed on a ship from the UK called the James in March 1839, and arrived months later here, in Hokianga. She brought two beehives when she came to be with her brother and married a Methodist missionary here,” says club chair Colin Smith. “There were no honey bees in New Zealand until then, and they spread and increased in the bush until the varroa mite was introduced into the country. That is our main killer of bees now,

and it is only by monitoring the health of the hive and treating it to remove this destructive mite that our honey bees continue.” “At our celebration event, author Tanya Batt did a theatre presentation telling Mary’s story and highlighting the importance of honey bees. She described the different noises the bees made in the hive and discussed the process of nectar collection, evaporation, regurgitation and the laying down of honey in the hive.”

Colin says managing hives is easy; you just need to know what you are doing. “We have hives at the club for education and training purposes plus our website has a number of videos including hive inspections and requeening. Bees are a very rewarding and interesting hobby as they are cooperative little insects that also provide honey for you as a by-product of looking after your local environment by pollinating plants, fruit trees and native bush.” Colin says everyone can protect honey bees by minimising the use of pesticides and provide environments where bees can flourish. “Overpopulating an area with bees is not good due to resulting nectar shortages. It is important to love your bees and look after them to maintain healthy happy colonies. Happy well managed bee colonies do not swarm, are not aggressive or diseased. “Experienced beekeepers can work on their hives without bee suits or gloves. That is an indicator that their bees are not getting aggravated. It also gives you the ability to pick up and capture queens without hurting them, and you are less likely to damage wax frames whilst working on your hive without gloves.” Before bees leave the hive in a swarm, they gorge themselves on honey and become intoxicated. If a ‘cast’ of bees leave without a queen, this is generally due to an overcrowded hive. “They may move due to overcrowding and disease, or the old queen may be ageing, and a new queen is born and decamps with some of the colony to start again. “These bees follow her pheromones until they find a place to stay. They can be found hanging from trees or grapevines in great lumps and are easy to capture because they are drunk from the honey. We shake the main bulk into a cardboard box and the rest walk or fly in, and we take the swarm and introduce it into a new hive. “They are an awesome little creature — they communicate with each other well. They forage and locate a source of nectar, return to the hive and pass on the information to the other bees as to where that source of food is. They use the position of the sun and the earth’s magnetic field and can fly five kilometres to and from that food source, returning to their own hive, which can be right next door to another hive. Their sense of direction and ability to communicate to each other through dance and sound is incredible. “People can help them by growing bee-friendly plants. They love ‘the good

Experienced beekeepers are often able to work with their hives gloveless, which shows the bees are well looked after and non-aggressive

stuff’ that is supplied to them, and it keeps them healthy. “Things like letting sprouting broccoli flower in winter, bee-friendly wildflower mixes, borage, English marigolds, cornflowers, Californian poppies, manuka and blue flax are plants they love. Bees are important for the survival of native flora and fauna. “Joining a club is a place to gather, create, share and be inspired as a community of beekeepers. “I worked on hives in the UK with my mother some 40 years ago and returned

by Ann van Engelen Joining the local Rose Society was an interest Dawn and Barry Eagle embarked upon in 1965 as something they could do as a young family.

“T

he Rose Society in New Zealand was founded in 1931 and has clubs across the country for people of all ages to become involved in and learn about rose growing,” says Dawn. “My late husband Barry and I were so pleased we brought our large block of land as growing roses became the best ‘hobby’ we could have found. It turned into a business, and we have met some of the nicest people from across the world and ventured to places we would never have gone. “We were young, and we had a new house, twin boys and a daughter and he

was a busy school teacher. In November 1965 we went to a rose show and saw a notice to join the society and decided we could do it together. We have both ended up being president and judges — it takes at least five years of sitting exams to become a national judge.” Over time the couple started a nursery and specialised in miniature roses. “The first World Rose Convention was in 1974, and we had moved into a new house and couldn’t afford to go, but knew international visitors were travelling the country so we would get the children dressed in their best Sunday outfits and take a big bouquet

of our miniature roses out to the airport and give them to the travellers.” One couple, were Americans Ralph and Ann Moore. Ralph is known as the ‘father’ of the modern miniature rose. “They bred all the miniatures at that stage and invited us to stay with them. Ralph suggested we open a nursery as no one was specialising in miniature roses here, so we did and never looked back.” Dawn is now the president of her local club. “We encourage members to learn the facets of hybridising and how to get successful plants from cuttings. We used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually in our nursery. I experimented during the years with some cuttings using rooting hormones on one half and nothing on the other half. When using the hormone I achieved 89 to 90 per cent rooted plants, but without only about five per cent rooted. “There have been many suggestions to grow from a cutting, such as putting them in a potato. I think this theory started when immigrants were travelling here on sailing ships from England and thought the potato would add moisture to the stem. Even if the rose sent out the odd root, it wouldn’t be able to grow into the potato flesh as the first roots are very soft and easily broken off. “I wrote two books, Eliza and the blue rose and Roses down under, and they are available online. I researched how people bought plants from across the world, surviving five months of heat and cold and often no fresh water.” Dawn’s theory is they wrapped the roots in moist

moss and possibly an oiled paper and added a wee bit of scarce drinking water. “One of our first miniature roses was creamy white, and when it was first propagated we went into the nursery, and on the radio, Julio Iglesias was singing his song Moonlight Lady, and we decided that was a good name. “Julio did a concert many years later, and we took presented him with a bouquet. That rose was the New Zealand Rose Society favourite miniature for about 15 years.” Dawn says there is a lot of excitement when you cultivate a new rose as the seeds are sown in spring and the first flowers show around Christmas. “A lot are single roses, and the New Zealand market is not strong for them, so I throw out hundreds every year. You have to be ruthless — some people plant 250,000 seeds and get four that can be marketed. “We sometimes take the flowers for granted. As judges we learnt about the faults and what an ‘ideal flower’ looked like, so, unfortunately, years ago I would throw away the imperfect ones, this is a regret I have. I have around 150 in my garden to someone not feeling well even one imperfect rose, thrills them to bits. They don’t say take that rubbish away. Now I take them to the hairdresser or the butcher and brighten peoples’ days. “There has been a changing trend, and people are realising that the hybrid teas last longer than other varieties in the vase. “Roses will be around forever. It is such a special flower, have you ever found anyone who hasn’t really liked it.”

What began as a hobby turned into a miniature rose growing business for Dawn whom used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE by Ann van Engelen Lucy Collin comes from a sheep and beef farming family, and her parents breed Charolais cattle with 110 purebred animals on the property.

L

ucy recently achieved a long-held personal goal of being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador at the Future Beef event in Feilding. The coveted award came with a cash prize that she used along with a scholarship from the Charolais Breeders New Zealand to pursue her love of Charolais and genetics, which led her to Canada for personal experience. “I spent two months working on a beef cattle stud in the isolated Canadian village of Miami. It is situated in the province of Manitoba, and this Miami couldn’t be more different to its United States namesake,” says Lucy.

“I didn’t see a single blade of grass the entire time I was there the ground was always covered by a foot of snow. Manitoba’s weather is not for the fainthearted, and the temperature sank to minus 25 degrees and did not climb above minus 10 during my stay — it was freezing. I took my thickest, warmest clothes, but the icy Canadian winter is next level. “I competed at a major Charolais event and was scored the top international points, which was extremely exciting. We had to tackle a range of modules, including livestock judging and handling. I was also invited to work at Steppler

Farms in Miami, which is Canada’s second-largest Charolais breeder. I went back over after my exams in November — my job was to help prepare animals for the biggest cattle show in western Canada and the stud’s annual female sale.” The top animal, a two-year-old heifer, sold for NZ$23,000 at the sale. “Steppler Farms has more than 900 registered Charolais cattle. They are hardy animals that live outside year-round. They are fed a mix of hay, straw, grass silage, maize and barley. The grain is grown on a nearby family farm and stored in massive silos. I had never seen silos that big until going to Canada,” said Lucy. “One of my jobs was to take straw bales and spread them under the trees, so the animals had a warm place to sleep. During calving, cows have to be checked hourly, because the ears of calves born outside can freeze off if they are not brought inside.” “The Charolais industry is a lot bigger in Canada, and they are one of the most popular breeds of cattle there. They also have a Canadian Charolais Youth Association. “Its objective is to strengthen the involvement of youth in breeding and connect enthusiasts from across the country. Every province has its own youth committee, and there are lots of young people interested in the breed. I made friends with heaps of CCYA members. A number of them want to visit New Zealand, which is awesome.

“Being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador has opened up so many doors for me, to be honest, I didn’t realise just how many it would open up.” Those international connections will prove to be very valuable for Lucy who is in her fourth year studying a bachelor of security studies majoring in biosecurity at Massey University in Palmerston North. “I am focussing on biosecurity because I recently bought my own Charolais cow for my 21st birthday. I want to breed my own stud cattle, and it is important to have good genetics. I want to use my biosecurity skills and qualifications to import and export semen,” she said. Lucy’s passion for the primary industries was sparked at a young age and as a weekday boarder at Iona College in Havelock North, along with fellow student Kate Ward, she helped establish the school’s first TeenAg club in 2013. “I chaired the club from years 11 to 13. “We went on a couple of farm tours and arranged to have interesting guest speakers come and talk to us. It was a great club,” she said. “Whilst at school my teammate Megan Hassle and I made it through to the TeenAg Grand Final. I encourage other students to get involved in TeenAg and the Future Beef event because both organisations provide endless opportunities.” TeenAg clubs are run by NZ Young Farmers and funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership.

How much better can I be? by John Arts

Part one The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be? Can I have less pain, more mobility and more energy? There are two parts to any successful nutritional therapy programme. The first is the actual measures we use. That usually centres on making changes to diet, supplements and in some cases referral to other therapies. The second is time. We all want fast results when in pain. The problem is that the changes in our bodies that created the problem often occurred for many years. While some people do get faster results, for most it is perseverance during the medium term that really counts. Over the years I have come to realise that often small changes can make a big difference. Someone could be taking a joint supplement and be getting little benefit. We change the active ingredient quantities, and there are significant improvements. For example, someone contacted

me with significant knee pain from osteoarthritis. It was painful and limited his mobility. His only medical options were strong pain relief and a future knee replacement. We made a number of enhancements to his diet. In most cases, this was more about substituting one food for another. I made changes to his supplement programme in particular targeting 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin, the same amount of glucosamine and a number of anti-inflammatory antioxidants including curcumin from turmeric. The results after six months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is now able to exercise; he has more energy and feels better. Avocados are international by Jacob Darling, GM Group Sales and Marketing, Darling Group

With a continued focus on grower returns, Just Avocados has delivered positive outcomes through the placement of New Zealand avocados in the international marketplace. With the 2018/19 New Zealand avocado season behind us, we are now planning the 2019/20 season. We are still awaiting an industry crop estimate to be released, but the discussion internally and in the field suggests this year’s crop will be up on last year. Some indicative numbers predict 4–4.5 million export trays. Although the overall per tray export outcome will be below our initial expectations due to a challenging tail end market in Australia, we are very pleased with our Orchard Gate Return (OGR). In summarising Just Avocados’ 18/19 season, we have achieved three strategic goals, which we believe have had the greatest influence on our ability to maximise grower returns. These are: • Supplying retail in Australia directly • Growth in new market development in Asia — increasing our supply from 20% to a total of 28%. • Stock management control and speed to market through our new business model in Australia. Reduced fruit age means better quality fruit at market and happy customers!

Last season, we had 65% of our total volume go into Australian retail, a milestone considering where we have come from in the last three years. The season review with retail was very positive. Another very positive outcome is our average fruit speed age to retail in Australia. Our numbers indicate an average speed to retail of 21 days — with the shortest time period being 16 days; something we know our growers are benefitting from through our new third-party logistics model. Control of the whole cool chain is critical in delivering premium quality fruit.

Government out for the count

ADVERTORIAL

A silent thief of sight

u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

When the government spends $119 million of our money, they and we surely should expect to get value for money and something that serves some practical purpose — even more so when a lot of that $119 million is spent on experts who have no other purpose than to deliver what we want. Well, not so apparently, according to statistics minister, James Shaw. Shaw says he retains confidence in Statistics New Zealand and government statistician Liz MacPherson. That is at a time, one year down the track, and by just about every count (or lack of), the 2018 Census for which they are responsible seems to be an unmitigated disaster. A census is hugely important. As the official count of how many people are in New Zealand and where, the data collected is used as the basis for important decisions, such as where government spends taxpayers’ money on services like schools and hospitals and how the government makes provision for our future. It even sets our electoral boundaries. As Liz MacPherson, herself said: “We want the census questions to reflect the important information needs of New Zealand. Throughout our planning for 2018, we’re making sure we can gather robust, independent information that will inform decision-making and contribute real value to the country.” Yet, the 2018 census has to this point singularly failed to do that. One in 10 New Zealanders weren’t counted, which suggests the accuracy of any data from the census will be at best questionable, and there will be a lot of questions asked and unanswered. That is if we get the data. Shaw says it is coming and it will be of use. More

Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

than 12 months on from the census, we are still to see any substantive data, and the census itself is subjected to an independent review. So, it appears that we know nothing about something that was to tell us about everything. University of Auckland statistician Andrew Sporle said of the 2018 Census: “It’s a bit of a disaster. We don’t know how bad, but we know it’s a disaster.” I cannot help but agree. Maybe we will have to just chalk it up as yet another mess this government is failing to take responsibility for. Moreover, who’s counting?

The optic nerve at the back of the eye is responsible for carrying the information that our retina sees, from the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is a progressive disease that damages the optic nerve and if left untreated can result in a complete loss of peripheral vision, leaving only a central tunnel to look through. Eye pressure is determined by the equilibrium between fluid production and removal in the eye, and glaucoma is related to this pressure. A healthy range is 8–21mmHg; however, it is possible to have healthy pressure and have glaucoma, or pressure higher than this and still have a healthy optic nerve. There are many types and causes of glaucoma, and the risk is increased if there is an immediate family history, and by the use of some medications. Glaucoma is treatable, but any damage already done to the optic nerve is irreversible, so an early diagnosis is crucial to the prevention of further peripheral vision loss. Some facts about glaucoma • It is the leading cause of blindness in NZ • Two per cent of the population above 40 are affected

• More than 10% of the population above 80 are affected • 50% of people with glaucoma are unaware they have it • Once you start to notice a loss of the peripheral vision, it is often too late. Up to two-thirds of the nerve fibres have died before someone will notice a loss of peripheral vision • It can affect any age. Babies can be born with glaucoma Glaucoma testing is much more than just checking eye pressure. There are many different signs we look for, and it is most often found in a routine eye exam with the patient being completely unaware there is any problem. Sarah, our optometrist at Mahurangi Vision Centre in Warkworth, is qualified to treat glaucoma and has sophisticated equipment that allows for very accurate screening and monitoring of not only glaucoma but many different eye conditions and diseases.

Maintaining your property With winter breathing down our necks it is time to remember that all those jobs that have been put off until tomorrow need to be attended to. Whether it is purchasing new thermal curtains or carpets, fixing windows and doors against drafts, upgrading the fireplace or getting your long-awaited spa pool — don’t forget the outside also needs care. Before the wet weather, consider washing the outside of your house, sheds, footpaths and driveways as sometimes required maintenance can be concealed by the slightest amount of moss, debris and clumps of deteriorating leaves. It takes just a small hole from a displaced nail in your roof, or sealer missing from joinery to create a magnitude of water issues including wet ceilings, rotten joists and dampness in your house. One broken tile or small nail hole is often the cause of a massive amount of water getting into your building without you realising. An old roof can have gaps, which allow the wind to blow rain through. Missing nails also create an environment for roofing iron to be ripped from the building. That in itself is a dangerous position to be in. One gust of wind can remove an entire roof,

and the iron can end up across the farm including on the road. It also has the ability to slice off a head or drastically injure an animal. Good downpipes and gutters catch valuable rainwater as well as ensure that your building is not quietly being destroyed by water retention. It is often not seen until the damage is done as it can spill back under the eaves into the internal walls. Now is the time to ensure they are up to scratch and clear of breaks and debris such as leaves and possibly dead rodents. That needs to be done not only on houses but buildings of all types, including cow sheds, pig sties, machinery and shearing sheds. Check your water tanks and rain harvesting systems are not quietly leaking and consider upgrading them or purchasing another if your water

requirements have grown. With wet weather on its way, it is a good time to take advantage of keeping your water supply topped up naturally and preparing for the future dry spells, so you have a good supply for your home, garden and animals. Winter is a time when we want as little as possible to go wrong, so preparing in advance, and calling the experts beforehand is a wise move. Having a plan and ensuring all that can be fixed or upgraded is done early will help eliminate unnecessary stress. Contractors are often busy and booked well in advance. Having your valuable buildings maintained pre-winter both protects your assets and will save on unexpected emergency call-outs, which often happen in the middle of a dark winter’s night. • New Homes & Replacement • No Joins – No Leaks • Exceptional Corrosion resistance • 10 Year Guarantee • Huge Range of Prepainted Steel Colours • Copper, Zinc & Aluminium

Healthy drains help reduce the number of contaminants lost in waterways while also optimising soil moisture and improving pasture production, stock health and the habitat for fish and helpful insects. Hiring a contractor is a good option to fence and clear your waterways, leaving you to take care of other chores on your property. Drains include natural or artificial channels to lower the water table and reduce surface flood risk. Fencing waterways is now an important part of rural life and reduce stock damage from treading the banks. Less damage means less build-up of sediment, which minimises the need to clear drains so frequently in the future. Adding a grass strip and native grasses next to the waterway help filter nutrients and sediment in the run-off on drain banks. It also improves water quality and saves money by reducing the need to clear drains. Planting shrubs on the northern bank provide shade to the drain in summer and improve fish and insect habitat whilst minimising weed growth in the drain. If you don’t have the time, equipment or knowledge, consider engaging a contractor who can ensure waterways on your property, no matter how big or small, are kept at a maximum of

THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES ADVERTORIAL

Caring for your bees For most commercial beekeepers, keeping track of how individual hives are performing is something of a nightmare. Whether you are responsible for 200 hives or 20,000, knowing how each hive is performing is something that would require driving, tramping or

MANUKA TREES 100 plants for $200

possibly flying in a helicopter to check in on progress. For many, this is impossible to do on a regular basis, and so some hives collapse without anyone there to work out what is going on, or worse, they produce well but late in the season and have to be pulled out of production just as they get going. Enter ModuSense, which brings beehives into the 21st century with a set of sensors that connect wireless back to the office, so you can check in on your hive even if you are halfway across the country. ModuSense founder Bruce Trevarthen has spent the past three years working with commercial operators to see what it is they need out of a sensor pack. “We had to build something robust enough to be dropped from a helicopter or thrashed about by a forklift, yet easy enough to install when you’re surrounded by angry bees in the middle of nowhere,” says Bruce. ModuSense provides a trio of sensors — weight, temperature and humidity — built to withstand the rigours of

commercial life. The base plate, which houses the scales, is made with twomillimetre thick stainless steel and is designed to bolt on to the bottom of a standard commercial hive base. “We can see when the forager bees go out of the hive, what time they return, the weight of the hive and of course the temperature and humidity to see how they are getting on. In testing, we were able to recommend leaving hives in the bush for an extra few days as it was obvious the hives were still on the flow — that increased the yield by around 15 per cent for those sites.” The ModuSense gear is charged by

solar panels and connects wirelessly using Spark’s Internet of Things network, but for those that are very remote, automatic switching to satellite is an option. “It means you can check in on hives without having to visit, and that is essential if you have got thousands of hives to look after.” ModuSense is working on the next wave of capability, with additional sensors and autonomous equipment able to be added to a hive. “We want beekeepers to reduce their costs and maximise their yields and having accurate data is one way we can help.”

Apiculture supports unity plea Following a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture on the commodity levy results recently Apiculture New Zealand is supporting the minister’s plea for greater unity to address existing challenges around bee welfare and biosecurity, food safety and export regulations. “We advised the minister a ‘no vote’ for the commodity levy means we do not have the investment fund needed, nor the collective focus that is characteristic of other primary industries in identifying, deciding and actioning priorities,” says chair of Apiculture New Zealand, Bruce Wills. “This lack of collective focus makes it particularly challenging to deal with the known issues that face the beekeeping industry, but also to promote the opportunities. “One of the opportunities we raised with the minister is how we grow the value of our key native and pastoral monofloral honey. It has become a priority for beekeepers given the erosion in prices for all honey types other than manuka. The minister was receptive to looking at how industry and government could work together on identifying the value of other native and pastoral monofloral honey particularly

in relation to supporting regional and Maori economic development.” The critical building blocks for protecting the term manuka and potentially other native monofloral honey like rewarewa and kamahi through certification trademarks and geographic indicators were already underway and are supported by Apiculture New Zealand. Apiculture New Zealand’s board meets in April to discuss next steps and has already signalled its willingness to work with the wider industry to find common ground and look at what types of initiatives are needed to secure a strong and united future for the industry. “While it is on all of our shoulders to protect and grow the value of industry, the minister’s decision to take these further steps to help industry and call for unity is a very strong signal to all stakeholders, both in optimism for the future but for urgency to act now,” says Mr Wills.

Fortuna Director, John Galvin, was active at the recent Karaka Yearling Sale and, assisted by NZ’s premier thoroughbred Selector, David Ellis, has acquired two outstanding Thoroughbred Yearlings which are Karaka Million “types” and these are now offered as part of Fortuna’s 2019 Syndication opportunities - we pride ourselves on finding “Value” opportunities for our clients. Fortuna Syndicated horses have won 26 of their last 66 starts in NZ – an amazing 39.3% winning strike rate. Yearling Colt Sired by Australian speed sensation DEEP FIELD and from a Female family replete with Two Year Old success — this Colt, nicknamed “CASSIUS” — presents as a Genuine 2020 Karaka Million Opportunity. Selector’s view — David Ellis “John, you have done well here — I was doubtful that you could get this Colt for your budget, he is from an “all speed” Australian family — I gave him a high rating and thought he would make a lot more than you paid for him — to my eye, he looks ideal for the 2020 Karaka Million Two Year Old race.” Trainer’s view — Jamie Richards “John, you told us you wanted to buy a Colt that had the attributes of an early Two year old type that could be aimed at the Karaka Million. This boy ticks a lot of boxes, he is strong, very well put together, has a great walk and I can see that he is just the type of Colt that will be broken in early, trial at the early season trials in August, then commence his racing career on a path toward the Karaka Million next January.”

Nicknamed “CANDY” this Filly also has a strong Two Year Old winning family and presents as another “get up and go” Two Year Old type Selector’s view — David Ellis “I really rated this Filly because of her type and her pedigree. She is physically correct, has a great walk, lovely head and eye and is exceptional value at this price.” Trainer’s view — Jamie Richards “John, you have bought another lovely Filly here, she is a medium sized, very attractive physically Filly, whom I could not fault. She is from a high class family and I believe she will be an early runner as a Two year Old — definitely one that I would be targeting toward the Karaka Million.”

Winning the Karaka Million is all about selecting the right type of horse – they must be early maturing types who will just get up and run as Two Year Olds and both Cassius and Candy certainly meet that criteria. As well as that, our Trainer, Jamie Richards, knows just what it takes to win the Karaka Million, having enjoyed unblemished success in that race these past three years.” Both Yearlings are eligible for the Karaka $1,000,000 Two Year Old Race run in January 2020 and the Karaka $1,000,000 Three Year Old Classic run in January 2021. The hot summer weather has seen has seen higher concentrations of birds near larger water bodies throughout the region. Our predictions and expectations for the forthcoming season Mallard and Grey Ducks: Excellent numbers spread throughout the region. Areas of higher concentrations will tend to be near crop harvest activities such as maize and kumara. Shelduck: Numbers are up on last year, and as expected they will gather and forage around the chicory and maize crops. Black Swan: Swan numbers appear to be similar to previous years. The northern harbours are a favourite haunt for the birds where they feed on the eelgrass out on the tidal flats. Pukeko: The ever-resilient Pukeko has increased in numbers dramatically, and Licence Agents in the Northland Region where hunters can purchase their 2019 Game bird hunting licences and obtain game season information…

they can cause significant damage to horticultural crops. Pheasant/Quail: Upland game bird hunting remains a favourite activity for mid to late season hunters. Good numbers for both species have been seen throughout the region with a high survival rate of chicks due to the warm summer conditions that prevailed during January and February. Expect birds to take to the saltwater environs during daylight hours. The large rivers, harbours, estuaries and coastal inlets provide excellent opportunities. Some form of a well-camouflaged watercraft will provide access and a shooting platform. Strings of decoys set correctly are invaluable as are motorised decoys on poles. Often birds on the saltwater will fly back to land in the evenings to replenish on water and food. Crop shooting and lush pasture close to freshwater can be productive at these times.

Solution to corrosion issues The aggressive nature of harsh environments such as sand, salt and fertiliser have a high impact on the corrosion of machinery from truck chassis to agricultural fertiliser loaders. As we know, this equipment is expensive and can rust out within five years with no protection. Prolan, a New Zealand made product, provides a solution. It is an

environmentally friendly lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin.

• Vehicle chassis • Fertiliser loaders & spreaders • Boat trailers • Panel beating applications

Prolan’s key advantage is its ability to stay on for long periods as once applied the coating has a natural affinity for all metal surfaces. Prolan protects vehicles and equipment by forming a natural barrier that prevents corrosive agents from penetrating the surface. After a day of work, for example, in a fertiliser works a loader can be washed down with a cold water blaster and the Prolan resists being washed off surfaces, providing the ultimate protection in extreme environments. An increasing number of agricultural companies, panel beaters and farmers are using Prolan successfully on loaders, truck chassis and equipment. The vehicles are coated internally and underneath with Prolan Heavy Grade Enduro, providing long-term rust protection. The ability of the product to creep enables it to reach and protect hidden away spots that are corroding away internally. The beauty of Prolan is that it is safe on the environment and the user and is easily applied through a trigger sprayer or undersealing gun.

Loader chassis being coated with 'Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade' for a fertiliser yard.

Often the question is asked how long will Prolan stay on. The answer varies depending on the environment the machinery lives in; a coating annually in highly-corrosive environments such as salt or fertiliser works and years longer for vehicle chassis exposed to the average NZ climate. Prolan’s natural lubricants will reduce costs, protect your investment longer, will increase productivity and are safe to use. At the same time, they ensure WOF and COFs are more readily passed from year to year.

ADVERTORIAL

Top standards and reliability For more than 15 years Acti-Bush Ltd has been making bushes and pins for machinery operators. They have always supplied to larger players such as mining companies, crane operators and civil construction companies. Now, mainly through wordof-mouth, smaller enterprises are ordering from Acti-Bush’s extensive range. The range is made and stocked in New Zealand. Operators can order any standard bush size for almost any make of machinery and be confident that the product will be in their hand the next day. Acti-Bush general manager Steve Neville says this is particularly attractive to people such as contractors and farmers with their own bulldozers and diggers, as they’re often under pressure and need to fit the work in whenever time and weather allow. “When pins and bushes wear out, owners of smaller machinery need replacement parts. They know that through us they will get fast, helpful service and they will be able to change the part themselves rather than having to go to an engineering shop.” Acti-Bush also carries a stock of pin seals, shims and tags. Their 200-plus bush sizes are machined to strict tolerances and heat treated for hardness, and every unit is quality checked. It is common for Acti-Bush pins and bushes to last two

or three times longer than imported equivalents reducing maintenance costs and downtime. “If anything, they’re too good,” Steve says. “They don’t wear out fast enough, so people don’t need to buy replacements.” Initially, Acti-Bush products sold only in Auckland, and now it’s sold throughout New Zealand and into the Pacific region. Steve says while Acti-Bush grew out of necessity the company is proud of the product they are manufacturing and their ability to do so at a competitive price. “We’re very proud of being a New Zealand company, making a highquality product in New Zealand and employing New Zealanders.” Simple 24/7 ordering via the ActiBush website has reduced turnaround time even further. Custom-made pins can also be ordered through the website, and every one-off product is made to the same high standards of technical accuracy and reliability.

Environment report reaction Forest Owners want clarity for what New Zealand plantation forestry is expected to deliver on climate change targets with the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton issuing a report, which downplays the contribution of forestry in sequestering atmospheric carbon, and instead wants to drive down fossil fuel use. Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, says Simon Upton is contradicting the Productivity Commission’s report earlier this year, which pointed to planting trees serving as carbon sinks as the main means of getting New Zealand to carbon neutrality by 2050. “The PCE takes a different tack to the Productivity Commission. The PCE makes the argument that long-lived gases from the burning of fossil fuels should be treated differently to shortlived greenhouse gases from biological sources. For instance, the Productivity Commission talked about the possible

FELLING TREES?

THINK SAFE

need for up to 2.8 million hectares of new planting to reach carbon neutrality. Simon Upton has a figure of 5.4 million hectares of new trees. That is a very big difference — both make the current One Billion Tree project aspirations look quite modest.” Mr Weir says that Mr Upton is correct in that forestry can’t offer climate change solutions indefinitely. “The industry has never suggested that we are a solution for all time, but in the immediate term, we just can’t wait for the development of a political will for a reduction in the use of fossil fuels, or the evolution of technical solutions to reduce livestock emissions. We don’t have time for either of those. Fast growing exotic plantation trees are a quick fix for getting our net emissions down in the critical next couple of decades.” Mr Weir says it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the large difference in sequestration rates between exotic plantation

forests and indigenous planting. “Exotics are many times faster at absorbing carbon. Simon Upton is right when he says landscape transformation has the potential to be disruptive and has to be managed carefully. “However, he and those who make policy should take on board that growing plantation forests is an income generating activity which, certainly for some regions, exceeds that of current marginal farming.” “Simon Upton is cautious that forestry may have a downside, which reduces its value in sequestering carbon. I have a real concern that this is going to be misunderstood in some quarters that we should abandon an expansion of tree planting altogether.” “It’s great to have the debate, but we do need some urgency in our government producing a carbon forestry policy. A critical first part of that is reform of the Emissions Trading Scheme.”

Help for farm waste disposal The Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund has allocated $381,000, to help farmers and growers more easily recycle or safely dispose of a wider range of on-farm waste such as agrichemicals, scrap metal, soft plastics and used oil. Rural recycling programme Agrecovery will manage the project by offering onestop-shop events where farmers and growers can drop off waste. The events will accept a wide variety of waste over and above what Agrecovery’s existing agrichemical scheme accepts. “This funding will enable the programme to offer a new one-stopshop approach to allow farmers to drop off agrichemicals and their containers as well as other farm waste, including bulk fertiliser bags, used oil, scrap metal, silage/baleage wrap and other soft plastics at the same time,” says associate environment minister, Eugenie Sage. “Waste on-farm has traditionally been burned, buried or stock-piled, which can have significant health risks and can cause air and water pollution. This project would see rural waste either recycled or disposed of, in an efficient, safe and managed way. “This Agrecovery project will also help develop options for New Zealand’s first mandatory product stewardship for agrichemicals and their containers.” The one-stop-shop approach builds on an existing scheme. “Currently farmers are able to drop off

agrichemical containers at close to 100 collection sites around the country under a voluntary product stewardship scheme run by Agrecovery.” Agrecovery also collects large quantities of containers and drums from farms and disposes of unwanted agrichemicals. The manufacturers who participate in the programme fund it by paying a levy on the products they sell into the marketplace. “We all need to take responsibility for reducing the impacts of the products we manufacture, sell and use on nature and the wider environment. Product stewardship helps us shift away from the ‘take, make and dispose’ economic model to a more efficient and less wasteful circular economic model where materials are reused or recycled at the end of a product’s useful life. “Burning, burial and bulk storage of waste on farms have been the main methods for managing rural waste traditionally, creating problems that this new project with Agrecovery will help to solve.”

Celebrating the alpaca by Ann van Engelen

National Alpaca Day is on Sunday, May 5 and alpaca owners throughout New Zealand will open their gates to the public to give the opportunity to interact with their much-loved animals. Kerry and Donna Tannion own Kerdon Alpacas located at 385 Baldrock Road, Kaiwaka and will be open on the day. “We have people visit regularly, but this is the national recognition day when we can celebrate our alpacas for what a great animal they are and teach about their fibre and products,” says Donna. “We started like most people with the idea of a few boy pets as lawnmowers in 2009, but became smitten and had to have some babies.” It takes approximately 335 days from conception to birth, and their first cria (baby alpaca) was born in January 2010. “We have bred around 100 since then with our main goal to breed highquality black animals, with excellent conformation and fleeces, which are fine and dense, with a soft handle. Our overall strategy, first and foremost, is to have healthy, happy animals. “We get all sorts of colours because it isn’t an exact science. You can put two blacks together and get fawns or any other colour.

“Alpaca are perfect for lifestyle block owners because they are gentle, inquisitive and have their own personalities. Some are very social and will come face-to-face with you while others stand back and observe what is going on before approaching.” Donna says as they are soft-footed, don’t damage the land and any facial eczema issues can be counteracted with zinc pellets throughout the FE season — they also thrive on kikuyu. “Alpaca require shearing, toenails clipped and vaccinating annually, but they are hardy animals. We believe you should only drench when it is needed. Our females get weighed weekly with scales. When we didn’t have scales, we would do body scoring by feeling the top of the spinal area. How to do this is explained in detail to people when they purchase animals. “We aim to build a resilient herd and do regular faecal checks through the vet. We were originally based in Maungaturoto, and when we shifted

to Kaiwaka, all 50 animals were drenched, so we didn’t transfer worms from property to property. “Pregnancy is approximately 335 days, but if they drop halfway through and you miss it, you can be two years before you get a baby. They can generally be mated again two weeks after giving birth. “We have done very well in the alpaca shows and last year took supreme champion black fleece in all three colourbration shows across the country and got champion black in the recent Kumeu show. I make scarves and artworks with the felt from the fibre and have a couple of ladies who knit for me for my on-site shop. “Alpaca can live up to 25 years and are good for the Kerdon Alpacas will be open to visitors on National Alpaca Day for people to interact with the animals soul. People often call in with the elderly and people in recovery from at the moment, and they are such a illnesses so they can interact. It is good delight to have around as they play in for their wellbeing. We have 18 babies the paddock in front of our house.”

Year of the nice guy by Andy Bryenton

There’s an old saying that the good finish last and that it’s only an optimist who believes that ‘next year will be the year of the nice guy’. Well, when it comes to ecological credentials, it seems that year has finally dawned. A quick look at the Geneva Motor Show, the European Car of the Year, and our own local sales forecourts reveals that the electric revolution is gathering pace.

HAY, SILAGE & MAIZE HARVESTING On the pace — Jaguar’s electric I-Pace scoops top honours in a first for the British automaker

Some grumblers will call it nothing but ‘virtue signalling’ that some of the top carmakers in the world are trading in horsepower for voltage. However, you have to admit, machines like the showstopping Pininfarina Battista are both jaw-droppingly pretty and insanely fast. Did it steal the thunder of Bugatti’s Voiture Noir and the new mid-engined Aston Martin Vanquish Vision? Perhaps. There’s no denying that Aston’s Lagonda SUV concept was 100 per cent electric as well. Jaguar has scooped its first-ever European Car of the Year award. The only one to go to the Brit automaker, despite the E Type being utterly deserving if a couple of years too early. They’ve done so with the I-Pace, a tidy, unfussy design, which is still clearly a Jag, while clearly encapsulating modern style. It’s also purely electric. The march of the crossover SUV continues across all marques, makes and brands in the auto world, but this one is something different, and it delivers one of the key factors, which may be holding Kiwi early adopters back — range. It’s the biggest issue on the minds of local electric vehicle fans. People want to get behind the wheel, and as

both the Euro car of the year and the Geneva Motor Show have proven, we have more choices than ever. Most of our power in New Zealand comes from renewable sources, so driving electric is less a signal of eco-virtue than it is the genuine article. In a land with far-flung towns and urban centres connected with

winding, isolated roads, range anxiety is real. Batteries continue to improve, and it’s when a trip from one town to another and back can be achieved without a lengthy recharge in the middle that the game will change in earnest.

Razor-sharp single The Formula One racing season is off to a great start, delivering the usual rivalries, intense pursuits and lightning-fast pit stops for viewers worldwide. Moreover, it’s also serving up plenty of technical data and science to help refine the cars of tomorrow. It’s not just on the high-speed blacktop of the world’s road circuits that this kind of innovation comes to life, however. Polaris, well known for their off-road machines, have taken a look at F1 as well. The first thing they noticed is that you need to lose a seat. Well, we’re not really sure if the inspiration for the new, 110 horsepower, 999cc twin cylinder beast they call the RS1 came from watching big-winged road rockets lap Imola and Monaco. What is certain is that the feel of pure acceleration has been channelled into this slim-hipped, big-wheeled version of Polaris’ legendary RZR series competitive side by side. They’ve made it a single seat machine, paring away weight, adding a wide stance, centralising mass and adding fun factor. Part of this smile-inducing operation is to do with the wide 64-inch track in comparison to the slimmed down body, which gives the look of a classic dirt track midget car or a tiny Baja racer. Dual A-arms up front and trailing arm suspension in back help the body and that single fighter-pilot seat glide over rough terrain, as the power from the four-stroke, liquid cooled DOHC engine is delivered via an automatic box and

PANEL & PAINT Private & All Insurance Work Polaris has taken away a seat and added singularity of focus to their impressive new RZR model

auto on-demand all wheel drive. That means a predictable, plantable back end and the added confidence of extra grip in the turns. Further confidence is inspired by the single-seat layout because, as we’ve seen on those F1 cars or even the McLaren of the same name, a central driving position is intuitive. You know exactly where the wheels are, in this case, you can see the front wheels through the chopped-out door

frame panels, and place them on every apex, or for grip on every rock and boulder. Visibility out the back may not be as grand, but with this kind of speed, what’s behind you is of little concern. By taking away a seat, Polaris has added fun and acknowledged that many riders are out there to enjoy pushing the envelope as a way to relax and unwind, alone but for the throttle and the sound of worries being obliterated in the slipstream.

Super-sized seven by Andy Bryenton

Did you know that Holden, the renowned motor brand, began as a saddlery in the 1860s? James Holden was stitching leather in Adelaide before the car was even invented. Which means he was a man who’d appreciate just how comfortable modern vehicles have become. One, which bears his name really stands out as Holden enter a new era of global supply and reach, thanks to the power of parent company General Motors. The new seven-seater Acadia wears James’

monicker, but actually comes all the way from Tennessee. To use a phrase from that part of the world, the interior space of this technically advanced and comfortable seven-seat family cruiser is ‘as big as all outdoors’. Three rows of jet-black leather seats, the front two boasting heaters can be moved about for ease of access, and rest assured, the back row is not simply for show. You’ll also find all the electronic gadgets, which a family wagon demands, including the addition of wireless phone charging to free up a total of five USB ports for the kids’ tablets and games. Comfort is definitely the order of the day, which may seem counter-intuitive when talking about a machine from the United States heartland, where it wears the GMC badge alongside big, boisterous pickup trucks. Moreover, there’s a big difference between the Acadia and the other large SUV in Holden’s range, based on the Colorado. The 3.6 litre v6 from the ZB Commodore just fits with the Buick-derived nine-speed transmission and adaptive AWD system to provide confident and smooth power about town, no matter what the load. jacked up, knobbly tyred mud-slinger, but a refined way to travel, which uses its all-wheel abilities to provide grip and inspire confidence while carrying a large family in quiet comfort. That quiet is achieved with advanced noise cancelling technology, making the cabin an even more relaxing space away from the maddening traffic. Holden is confident that this new large SUV will impress those who would

perhaps, in other times, have been wedded to the idea of a big Commodore wagon to carry the family to and from school and sports. It’s an indication of the new global focus and reach of the company that they are moving far beyond the formula of being ‘Australasia’s big four-door sedan brand’, taking the best that GM can offer and tuning it pitch perfect for what drivers demand today.
