Concerns in the rural community about financial instruments offered by some banks in New Zealand have sparked an inquiry by the Commerce Commission. The product is known as an interest rate swap and the commission wants to hear from farmers who may have participated in the financial derivative after receiving complaints alleging they were mis-sold the product by certain banks. In particular complainants allege that the nature and characteristics of the swaps were promoted in a way that was misleading. Interest rate swaps allow a client to manage their interest rate exposure on their borrowing. They were principally provided to large corporate and institutional customers, but were later offered to rural and commercial clients throughout New Zealand by various banks. “This is a very complex investigation and we are at an early stage,” said Commerce Commission chairman, Dr Mark Berry, “We have not yet formed a view as to whether the Fair Trading Act has been breached, however we do have sufficient concerns that we wish to probe further.” Businesses found guilty of breaching the Fair Trading Act may be fined up to $200,000 for each charge. Where more than one charge is laid, the court may impose a fine greater than $200,000. Only the courts can decide if a representation has breached the Fair Trading Act.

The Commission has requested and received preliminary information from the banks and more detailed information is being sought after many farmers claimed to have suffered significant financial loss as a result of entering into the interest rate swaps. “We have information from around 60 complainants at this stage, but will need more people to come forward if we are to form a complete picture of the issue,” said Dr Berry. “We are not only interested in people who feel that they have been misled but also those who are satisfied with the way the product was sold to them.” The Commission has asked affected farmers and others who may have been involved with swaps to complete a questionnaire at www.comcom.govt.nz/ interest-rate-swaps

Assistant Police Commissioner, Grant Nicholls, says police are backing the campaign. “If people have information on crime or suspicious activity our preference is always for them to talk to the police first, but if for whatever reason they don’t want to do that, we’re encouraging them to pass on what they know to Crimestoppers.”

‘Shut the gate on rural crime’, will see rural households given ‘It’s your call’ stickers to place around their properties. Crimestoppers chairman John Perham, who is a rural resident, says the campaign encourages people to report suspicious activity with the confidence that their call will be totally anonymous.

rior to European arrival in New Zealand, the primary food crops cultivated by Maori were the kumara, taro, hue and yam — plants originating from warmer climates and counted amongst a group sometimes known as ‘canoe crops’, as they were spread across the Pacific by human migration. Brought to New Zealand from Polynesia, these crops grew best in the subtropical north, and their areas of cultivation — the staple kumara, in particular — dictated Maori population

densities. Cultivation was done with wooden implements, such as the ko, and the soil was worked without turning it. The introduction of European farming and its adoption by Maori began in the Bay of Islands. Adapting kumara growing methods, Maori were growing potatoes from around the beginning of the 1800s and the new crop quickly joined the kumara as a staple — additionally, the potato was easy to grow, store and market to Europeans. In 1812, Ngapuhi leader,

Ruatara, brought wheat seed home after visiting New South Wales, and with his uncle, Hongi Hika, promoted European agriculture among the northern chiefs. Although Captain James Cook had released a ewe and a lamb on his visit to the South Island, there is no evidence of their survival, and it was Anglican Church Mission Society missionary, Samuel Marsden, who brought the first sheep, cattle and horses to the north in 1814. In 1820 at Kerikeri, CMS missionary, Samuel Butler, performed and recorded the first turning of New Zealand soil by iron plough, writing: ‘Each heart rejoiced in this auspicious day’. Butler went on to establish the first of several ‘model farms’ created by missionaries to grow food for their missions and, by using Maori labour, instruct Maori in European farming methods. The first CMS farm inland from the Bay was developed by Richard Davis at Te Waimate from 1830. An impressed Charles Darwin visited in 1835, recording, along with stables, pigs and poultry, blacksmith’s forge and flour mill: ‘large gardens, with every fruit and vegetable that England produces’. Richard Davis’ journal accounts of this period are held by Te Ahu Heritage Museum, Kaitaia, and Te Waimate’s

mission house, built in 1832, is still standing, along with the Stone Store in Kerikeri, New Zealand’s oldest stone building — built during the same period to store the wheat grown on Te Waimate’s farm — and its own adjacent mission house built by Samuel Butler. Now museums, these venerable buildings house displays that recall the agricultural ventures of the CMS missionaries.

peracado, their home and 10 acre orchard, is well known in Northland musical circles and further afield for hosting Opera in the Garden — an annual celebration showcasing local singers and featuring opera luminaries as guest artists — each year for the past 17, attracting enthusiastic audiences of up to a thousand people. Both Joan and Richard have received QSMs for their services to the community in recognition of their extensive involvement in vocal performance and tuition since the early days of their marriage. The couple met in 1959, competing in the Auckland Singing Competitions. Richard, a dairy farmer from Wellsford and a baritone, was at his first competition. Joan, a city girl from Hamilton and a lyric coloratura, was studying singing with Sister

Mary Leo — also teacher to Kiri te Kanawa and Malvina Major — with a singing career in her sights, despite previously turning down the offer of a scholarship to the London Opera. “It was very expensive to study over there, and I didn’t feel like I was ready.” She describes her decision as an out of character 'cautious fluke', as within 12 months she had met Richard. “And it definitely was the big romance.” The couple married in 1960, buying a 400 acre property at Marahemo near Maungaturoto, where they farmed sheep and raised two daughters. Joan continued her vocal training and in 1965 she won the Auckland Aria Competition, going on to Sydney to win several awards. The Kennaways also involved themselves in the musical life of their rural community, becoming stalwart members of Maungaturoto’s Otamatea Repertory Theatre and performing everything from Gilbert and Sullivan to Rogers and Hammerstein.

NORTHERN FaRmiNg LiFEsTyLEs April 2013 “The first thing we did together was a Christmas pantomime,” says Joan. “I was Cinderella, and Rick played my father, Baron Hangover.” In 1995 the couple swapped sheep for fruit, moving north to the Glenbervie orchard. “It wasn’t so much a retirement move as a change in lifestyle,” says Richard. “Joan was travelling to Whangarei several times a week to teach singing. I was nearly 60, and sheep farming is very physical work. So we looked around for something we could do closer to town.

healthier and with less pests than when they were spraying three times weekly. “We have swags of ladybirds; you have to flick them off the fruit.” Joan manages a fulltime home-based teaching week with around 30 pupils aged between seven and 70, as well as musical direction for Whangarei based Opera North, founded by the couple in 1996. Currently with 49 singers ranging in age from 13 to 75, Opera North produces a programme each year of concerts and recitals that span classical opera to musical theatre. The Kennaways say the joy of hearing song in their home and workplace is a special part of their lives. Not only do Joan’s pupils come to the house for lessons, but Opera North also rehearses there throughout the year.

Nutritional therapy in action Over the past few months we have been looking at how nutritional medicine can help various conditions. So far we have looked at joints, with columns on osteoarthritis, joint inflammation especially bursitis and gout. Recently we have discussed measures to help respiratory problems, firstly asthma and COPD and secondly sinusitis. If you missed any of these columns I can email them on request. Today we will look at an example of how one person has improved his health by adopting nutritional medicine principles. This man, an orchardist in his 50’s spoke to me 6 months ago with several problems. He was under good medical care and on various medications to control his symptoms. His main problems were joint pain from arthritis, lower body muscle pain and low energy. His poor mobility was having a great impact on the quality of his life. After a full analysis we created an anti-inflammatory diet. We made sure his diet was nutrient dense and especially targeted potent dietary antioxidants including dark berries. We actively reduced refined carbohydrates and sugars as these all push the body towards inflammation. Additionally these foods are essentially ‘empty calories’ in that while they provide energy, they do not provide the vitamins and minerals needed to make energy.

Opera in the Garden 2013

We liked Glenbervie, and when the avocado block came up we bought it.” Four years later daughter Bronwyn and her husband Tim Eves came in as partners, buying the house next door. Rick still works in the orchard. He does the picking, with Tim managing the heavier maintenance work and selling at the weekly Whangarei Growers Market — the major outlet for the avocados, along with limes, grapes, passion fruit, and more recently, strawberries. The fruit is also sold at the roadside and a range of local outlets. ‘Operacado’ grows mainly Hass avocados with some Fuerte, and is managed organically with no chemical fertilisers or sprays. The trees are fertilised with rock dust, and Richard says the orchard is

Richard picking avocados

“We’re like a family, we have the wonderful age range of the singers, and it’s such a different feeling and atmosphere meeting in a home,” Joan says. Now great-grandparents, the couple still perform regularly and love to hear each other sing. Joan says she often hears Richard singing around the property. “His voice hasn’t changed a bit over the years, and it still thrills me to hear him.”

We then started an intensive 3 months of supplements where we added high doses of Omega 3 fish oil, a broad spectrum multi vitamin/mineral/antioxidant. To this we added a complex formula designed to restore his energy processes. He had been taking cholesterol medications for some time and these are known to cause muscle pain and low energy mostly because they prevent the liver from making sufficient ubiquinone, also known as co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). This complex included CoQ10, a B vitamin complex then a combination of antiinflammatory agents including turmeric extract, resveratrol and OPC. He started to notice a change within a few months. The muscle pain has almost completely gone, his joints less painful and he has had a return of his energy. A real bonus has been a reduction in tinnitus and improvements in a cataract. There was no magic in what we did. This was just a combination of personal commitment on his part and for mine making sure his nutrient intake allowed his damaged body systems to heal resulting in a substantial improvement in his health. Give the body what it needs and the results can be quite surprising. Give me a call if you need more information. Their 380 Jersey cow dairy farm was described by the judges as ‘an aesthetically-pleasing, well presented property that achieves excellent production at minimal cost to the environment’. “All aspects of the business are sustainable and profitable and there is a clear balance between the financial performance of the operation, followed by the environment and sociallysustainable aspects,” they said. Judges noted the farm’s excellent effluent management system which utilises a three-pond system, with water from the second pond recycled for cleaning the feed pad, and added the farm’s visible location by Kara Road

Where wily predators roam Ask the average kiwi farmer about pests, and pest control, and rabbits, possums, and maybe geese or swans pretty much make up his list of things he’d like to get rid of from the property. Not so in other parts of our world. A farming friend who has a 50 acre smallholding raising table birds in southwest France has for some years been plagued by ‘Reynaud’ — the red fox.

But in real life, foxes are widespread throughout mainland Europe and in the British Isles, and in the past 20 years have been increasing in number, due to government rabies controls which have eradicated the disease in many countries. With the increase in numbers has come an increase in predation on farms.

Badgers too, are a problem, as is the case in many parts of Europe and the UK, where they are blamed for Tb spread.

You need a nerd down on the farm

he makes nightly visits to farms owned by three wicked, cruel, dimwitted farmers named Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, and snatches the livestock or food available on each man’s respective farm.

There are also foxes in many urban areas including London suburbs where family pets have become victims. Bill Baynes, who oversees the property in France has a constant battle to protect his poultry.

In his book, a clever Mr. Fox lives underground with his wife and four children. In order to feed his family,

“We have a big problem with the fox and badgers attacking our birds. We’ve lost geese and ducks, chickens and quail over the years. Not always the fox. Badgers are just as bad,” he says.

In the latest incident, a fox got through the chain fence behind his hen house. “She killed half a dozen hens then tried to get back through the hole she came in through but the hen she was carrying got stuck in the fence! “Anyway I was pretty mad to lose all those hens so I set up the trap. I had noticed lots of places around the duck pond fence where something had tried to claw a way under! So I cut a hole in the fence the same shape as the trap and slid it through! I put one of the dead chickens in as bait! And waited. “Anyway nothing happened until we found a dead duck. The fox had jumped the fence! So on my next attempt I put the dead duck in the trap! I camouflaged the trap with branches and covered the floor with leaves. The next morning both metal doors were down and the fox was inside.” ‘Reynaud’ met an untimely end, which would no doubt disturb Mr Dahl’s readers. Just how valuable is your water supply?

11

by Bob Cathcart, Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

The ongoing drought conditions gripping Northland are again highlighting the value of an adequate supply of good quality stock water. Even if you have some grass or can get hard feed, you cannot do much with it if you have no water. Dairy farmers and their advisors are well aware that a reliable supply of good quality water in every paddock is essential for milk production. Beef farmers operating intensive grazing systems also know that water is needed to grow meat and they too are installing systems with reticulation to every paddock. One hill country farmer I spoke with in January learned a valuable lesson from the last drought. He has upgraded and fenced out his dams to give him 100 days’ storage. Water is pumped to a reservoir from where it is reticulated to every paddock. To safeguard against water being lost in leaks he has installed an inexpensive water meter. He runs bulls and calculates that his water use, averaged across Year 1 and Year 2 animals, is 15 litres per bull per day on a cool, overcast day. On hot sunny days that use rises to 31 litres per day. We know that

dairy cows need a lot more. How much are you using? Under the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management (a central Government policy binding on all water users) the regional council must prepare water management plans for all rivers and streams in Northland by 2030. To do this, it needs to know how much water our farmers are currently using and the rate that they take it, for stock and domestic purposes and for dairy shed washing. This has nothing to do with charging for water; rather it’s all about protecting your livelihood and ensuring there’s enough water to go round in future.

Vetade Has the lack of green feed depleted the vitamin levels in your stock? During a drought, when stock have limited access to green feed, vitamins A and E are the most common vitamin deciencies to develop. Maintaining adequate levels of these vitamins is important for growth and regeneration of tissues and to maintain a healthy immune system so stock are better able to cope with what mother nature throws at them.

Don’t let this drought rob you of any more than it already has – protect your stock with a single injection of Vetade to prevent deciencies while feed is short. TM

The aim at this stage is simply to get a handle on how much is needed. Register your use with the council setting out where you take water, at what rate and for how long, and what time of the day you usually take that water.

Unlike what are commercially defined as ‘fpa’ (fine particle application) in which all ingredients are finely ground regardless of benefit and cost, each individual ingredient in fluid fertilisers is present in a range of particle sizes to suit that nutrient. The main factors deciding the particle size range chosen for each nutrient are (a) whether it is possible and intended for some or all of that nutrient to be taken up through the leaves, as in a foliar fertiliser, and (b) what sizing will allow passage of the particular ingredient through the plant canopy to the soil, with as many individual

particles as possible, with a totally even spread, to optimise nutrient uptake. ‘Liquid’ fertilisers got a deservedly bad name in New Zealand beginning in the 1980s, because of blatantly dishonest and misleading claims that the tiny amounts of nutrient being applied per hectare at the rates recommended by the seller would maintain production. Typically, these products were applying less than one kg/ha of the key nutrients, and trivial amounts of trace elements. They made huge profits for their suppliers, but cost farmers dearly. Several such companies added growth promotants and ‘greening’ agents to their products,

Unfortunately, this has distracted attention from the enormous benefits of true fluid fertilisers, as described above. Fluid fertilisers have all the advantages of solid fertilisers — relatively low cost products designed to maintain and improve soil fertility and plant growth — but avoid their disadvantages of dust, segregation of components during handling, transport and spreading, and entry of nutrients into waterways.

In addition, fluid fertilisers offer a combination of important advantages — extremely accurate placement (thereby allowing deposition of nutients into waterways to be avoided), extremely even coverage of much smaller-sized particles than granules, optimising both leaf and root uptake, and the easy addition of both solid and liquid additives, additional nutrients, seed and insecticide. In particular, the additives can include cutting-edge products that greatly increase both P and N efficiency and reduce losses. For all these reasons, I believe that ‘fluids’ are the way to go. The water content is simply the carrier, the means to ensure that the nutrients and additives required to optimise productivity on each given farm can be applied in the most cost-effective manner, in any terrain, in any weather.

Step forward to raise funds for road safety charity by Denise Gunn

An opportunity to remember road accident victims, their families and friends, and help to raise funds for support services for those families will run all this year. The Step Forward fundraiser has been organised by international road safety charity, Brake. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1995 and formed in New Zealand

in 2010, Brake has two key aims: preventing road deaths and injuries, and caring for people who have been bereaved or seriously injured in a crash.

Last year, 307 people died on New Zealand roads. Brake New Zealand spokesperson Carolyn Perry, said that’s 307 families who found out the devastating news that their loved one would not be coming home. “Many more families, friends and communities will have been affected by someone they care about being killed or seriously injured in a crash.” The Step Forward campaign asks people to set themselves a sporting challenge that relates to the number 307, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on New Zealand roads in 2012.

The Step Forward fundraiser, organised by international road safety charity Brake, will run all this year to remember road accident victims, their families and friends. The fundraiser will also help raise funds for support services for those families

“Everyone can take part — adults and children, individuals and groups, and there are lots of ways to challenge yourself,” said Miss Perry. Some suggestions include: — swimming 307 lengths of a swimming pool with sponsorship for each length swum — jog, or work out in the gym, for 307 minutes (five hours) with sponsorship for every minute — hold a 307 minute cricket, rugby or soccer game with sponsorship for every minute played or point scored — cycle 307km over a week or a month, with sponsorship for every kilometre. Miss Perry said taking part in the fundraiser is easy.

“Firstly, you need to decide what challenge you’re going to set yourself, whether to do it on your own or as a group, and when to do it. “Once you know what you’ll be doing, contact Brake on brakecharity@gmail.

Massey Ferguson goes bigger and better with MF8680

professional — in fact Keryn appreciates the MF 8680’s high horsepower and he says it’s helped him to grow his direct drilling business. Keryn has had a good run with Massey Ferguson. He traded in an MF 8480 he bought second hand three years ago to get the new tractor, and previously operated a Massey Ferguson 7485. When he heard from his local dealership that the new MF 8680 was in New Zealand he jumped at the chance to take a look, and he admits he was convinced by the ergonomic cab, ready horsepower and amazing fuel economy of Massey Ferguson’s latest, most advanced tractor. in more power, but the price was very attractive. “I was very happy with the Massey Ferguson brand with the first two tractors I’d had.” Keryn says. “I like the fuel economy on them, which is only one of the things that stood out. They are so economic to run and the new one is even more so using SCR Adblue technology. Initially I had reservations about buying a tractor with Adblue; however it has proved to be easy to use and it gives us excellent fuel economy.” Keryn’s previous two tractors were between 160hp and 320hp, while the new MF 8680 delivers a whopping 350 horsepower. “When they put the deal together and said it was 350hp, I wasn’t worried. There’s no substitute for horsepower. The main thing I would say about it is that it couldn’t be better for getting the power to the ground in my application, or for straight lugging. The economy on it is awesome.” “I’m taking on work that I never would’ve been able to do before with the other tractors. We’re doing more work

More power for novice riders

NORTHLAND’S LARGEST STOCKISTS OF EXHAUST PARTS WITH A FAST AND EFFICIENT TEAM OF EXPERTS

by Andy Bryenton

What can we do for you?

Recent changes to the motorcycle learner’s licence have seen a host of new machines opened up to novice riders, all the way up to the power and torque of 650cc models. Leading the charge for Suzuki is a very popular multi-role bike indeed — the ‘bulletproof’ DR 650.

1. ECU upgrade chips for all common rail engines 2. Fix any size exhaust system 3. Fit or supply all your exhaust requirements

It’s the perfect machine for riders accustomed to off-road sports or hard working farm bikes, and it traces its pedigree back to the gruelling baja rally, with a big 650 single sitting at this spot in Suzuki’s range since 1990. Riders appreciate the reliable on demand torque of the gutsy single overhead cam mill, as well as the commanding riding position, making this one of the easiest 650s on the market to handle, no matter what the terrain. Successive generations of the DR 650 have seen weight pared off and power added, leading up to the 2013 iteration we see today. And now that this popular machine is available to new

Drought lunch offers ‘relief’ by Paul Campbell

Scattered rain across the north has brought a little relief, more for some farms than others, with a Kaipara cloudburst dumping 60mm at the beginning of the month — but in some cases while one paddock was drenched, the one next door stayed dry. But odd patches of green have actually appeared, and a planned Drought Recovery Lunch in Whangarei on April 18 might be a less sombre affair if the showers keep coming. Rural Support Northland is behind the luncheon at the ASB Centre, and the event is cited as an opportunity to ‘hear some good news and share ideas with other farmers and hear guest speakers, Jacqueline Rowarth, Waikato University’s Professor of Agribusiness and the comedian, Te Radar’.

Lawrence agricuLture Limited now is the time to undersow to restore drought damaged pasture and regrass maize paddocks

The lunch will be followed by the Federated Farmers Northland AGM and an afternoon tea. The weather pundits say April looks like staying warm with the dry lingering on, with the substantial falls that are needed, not really likely. things get so “When dry, you really need more than the average rainfall to bring the soils up to normal

around the country ‘but river flows and soil moisture levels will likely be below normal in the north’, down to the Waikato. Niwa principal climate scientist, Brett Mullan, said the current dry conditions meant it would take some time for river and soil moisture levels to recover. “When things get so dry, you really need more than the average rainfall to bring the soils up to normal,” he said. Dr Mullan said the seasonal climate outlook tracked general tendencies, but could not predict individual weather patterns, which could only be predicted up to 10 days out. “If you’re making lots of decisions about water use — and I think this applies to farmers as well as energy companies — you can bias your decision to take into account the fact that it could be a bit drier than normal.”

Busy season for hoof trimmers We are getting closer to the end of the 2013 season. It has turned out to be a more challenging season for most of the country, but the milk price is looking better for next year. We, as hoof trimmers have been very busy this season. Some farmers report that they have had less lame cows this year and others are saying the opposite. It is interesting though how many people keep on blaming the tracks and stones on yards for their lame cows. Others are beginning to see things more in perspective, now realising that laminitis is the cause of lameness and that physical stress aggravates the problem. It seems that the articles I have been writing are helping with that as well, as some of my friends don’t ask me anymore on how I am but ask how the laminitis is doing! Laminitis is the inflammation of the laminy which is basically an unhealthy live tissue inside the claw. This is mainly caused by diet but can also be triggered by mastitis, calving or some other stresses. So if laminitis is the underlying problem how can preventative hoof trimming help? With trimming you can’t make a hoof healthier so you can’t solve laminitis with hoof trimming. That is correct. No matter how well the hooves are shaped if you don’t feed the cow properly you can still end up with a major problem. Hoof trimming is not meant to solve the lameness issue, it is only a way to assist farmers minimise the effects of laminitis. Imagine a trailer that has two really old tyres on it. They are weathered by the sun and could burst at any time. Now you put a load on the trailer but you put that entire load on one side. The tyre on that side bears a greater load than the other tyre and is therefore more likely to burst. If you spread the load evenly

Phone Dave for a price.

Gra nco Northland

over the trailer you would get a lot more distance out of the old tyres. They may still burst but it is less likely. Trimming cow’s feet properly has the same effect as spreading the load on your trailer. Making both claws carry 50% of the weight will be much better especially when a cow is affected by laminitis.

C&C Contract Electrical Dargaville

The reality is that nearly every cow in NZ has laminitis to some degree. I don’t think that we can ever totally overcome that and we probably don’t have to. I believe that laminitis belongs to a (domestic) cow like fleas belong to a dog. It is not a problem as long as it is being kept under control. Preventative hoof trimming is a very effective way to minimise the effects of laminitis. Autumn is a good time of the year to go through the herd and pick the cows that have long and uneven claws and get them trimmed before the winter, this way the cow starts the new season on well shaped claws and that is particularly helpful at calving time.

Even better is, if you go through your herd two or three times during the season and keep picking the worst cows you will find you get less lame cows, and that’s got to be good for animal welfare and your pocket!

Clean winter heating The cooler days have just begun with winter around the corner, and with it comes time to look at home heating needs. “At Peninsula Mowers and Heating we only stock highly efficient, clean burning, compliant, New Zealand-made wood fires,” says managing director, Steve Castle. “Our well known brands include Masport, Firenzo, Metro, Wagener, Magnum, Pyro Classic, Woodsman and Yunca, and so we have one of the biggest ranges in Rodney allowing us to cater for many types of installs. Wood Fires are designed to heat an entire home not just a room, are cheaper to run than most other forms of heating, environmentally clean when operated correctly, and are carbon neutral! “Costly winter power bills and lack of reliability in rural areas, as well as fluctuating fuel costs are but a few of the factors leading to a greater demand for woodburners,” adds Steve. “As an energy source, wood is the only completely renewable and reliable option for heating the home, cooking and meeting hot water demands. The majority of rural homes have a plentiful supply of firewood at their back door step which equates to

The right home choice There are many building companies in business that all appear to be very similar in terms of what they offer, so how can you tell if you are getting the best deal? Peter Butler, Managing Director of G.J. Gardner Homes for Whangarei and the Kaipara, says for most people figuring out if they are getting the best deal is not an easy exercise. “All building companies present their pricing in different ways, they all have different specifications, and some builders leave out so called extras that should be included as standard,” he says. “Others may allow what are known as provisional sums for certain things such as electrical work, or the kitchen, and often these amounts are

inadequate and end up costing the customer more in the long run.” He added that ‘square metre’ rates are another thing to watch. “Often builders quote their square metre rate and to many people this seems like a logical way to figure out who delivers the best value and the cheapest price. The truth is it’s very misleading. Square metre rates are only of any relevance if you are comparing exactly the same plan and specification. “It’s a fact that more New Zealanders

choose to build with GJs than any other builder. Make a great choice and discover why more New Zealanders build with G. J. Gardner Homes than any other builder.” For more information, contact 09 437 5666 or www.gjgardner.co.nz

Since moving to the far north six years ago after developing an award winning business in Auckland, Trudy Crerar and partner, Mark Stone, now focus on rural and coastal landscapes as a specialty. “My strong point is to create landscapes with a bold underlying design which is dynamic and extends living environments for people. This is then reinforced with a clever emphasis on plant selection,” says Trudy. “Our own native plants have survived many climate changes over thousands of years and are quickly adaptable to harsher conditions such as drought. Using natives in our gardens and landscapes, we can see how vital they are for restoring our habitats and improving waterways.” Lawns in gardens are becoming less and less sustainable as they are so difficult to establish and maintain as anything better than a mown crop of weeds which turns brown over summer. Restricting lawn sizes is an option, to adopt larger scale native planting, which once established is a realistic easy care option. “Northland landscapes are extraordinary and inspiring”, says

Andrew Boyd, who with his wife Julie, owns The Barn Company in Warkworth rebranded as Coresteel Buildings North Harbour, adds that many people much prefer the look of American or Kiwi barns. “But in fact the traditional style has internal legs to support the higher roof in the centre, which creates an obstacle to move around cars, boats and other equipment, ” he said. Coresteel Buildings are designed and engineered in New Zealand for New Zealand’s tough conditions. Since 1951 Lockwood has been working with New Zealanders to help them build the homes they deserve. Choice, quality, sustainability and security are hallmarks of the Lockwood process and are as relevant today as they were 60 years ago. From those years of experience come two new offerings: a free eBook preview of the latest Lockwood plans and an opportunity to buy Lockwood Home & Lifestyle — the 100page, full-colour plan book detailing 40 new and updated house plans.

“The company has cleverly engineered their clearspan American and Kiwi buildings that have no internal legs and are aesthetically pleasing and practical to boot. Now you can have a clearspan barn in either style, that looks great and has more capacity for storage. Andrew adds that some methods of shed construction make it easy for birds

to nest in the roof of their sheds with generous gaps between the cladding and the framing. “Birds roosting in your shed unfortunately fertilise your prized possessions that you have spent good money to protect. Coresteel Buildings standard ‘C’ section purlin sits flat against the cladding leaving little room for even small birds. The ultimate option is the ‘bird proof purlin’ in the form of an elongated ‘z’ that prevent those avian terrorists from perching in the roof.” Along with the company’s unique vermin proofing at floor level, this makes the cleanest shed available. “Don’t be misled into choosing the cheapest roller door for your building. Cheapest usually means lightest steel and less strength. The roller doors are the weakest part of a building and the wrong door can mean the door needs to be replaced, or worse, the roof of the building when caught by high gusting winds. “It’s worth taking the time to understand a little about the effect of wind on buildings. Sheds are often bigger than houses, built in more exposed areas than houses and don’t have internal walls to help brace them against wind, so the structural integrity of the portals and connections are critical.

Fishing from the beach A fishing innovation that is being seen more and more often on the country’s coastline is the kontiki and McCoy and Thomas, Hunting and Fishing, along with Seahorse Electric Kontikis, will be holding a demonstration of the GPS Seahorse Electric Kontiki at Baylys Beach, on Saturday April 20, at 10.00am. “It will be held regardless of the weather,” says Phil Scherer of Seahorse Equipment Limited. “We will be showing the features of the Seahorse Kontiki followed by a demonstration to show everyone how well the GPS autopilot handles the big west coast surf and strong currents. I will be on hand along with Jason of McCoy and Thomas, Dargaville, to answer any questions relating to the GPS model and kontiki fishing in general. “The GPS system means that the kontiki itself goes where you want it to go, all under the autopilot. You simply point the Seahorse into the ocean and then set the magnet to set the course, start the motor and launch. The autopilot

will steer itself in that direction, tacking across side currents and turning back onto course if a wave manages to knock it off course.” Beach longline fishing is an economic and effective way to regularly catch fresh fish offshore, either single handed or with family and friends. The Seahorse has been designed to power through all conditions taking your line up to 1,900 metres. DUCK SHOOTING SEASON Dry Conditions Reduce Habitat by Rudi Hoetjes Regional Manager Northland Fish & Game

The glorious month of May is almost upon us and although the weather has recently produced low cloud and drizzle, the region remains extremely dry. As a result, waterfowl habitats have been reduced and in some places, have dried to an extent they are no longer of interest to ducks. While this may ruin the hunting plans for a few, alternative plans are required. Past drought situations in the Northland Region appears to do two things; either concentrate bird numbers on permanent water or sends them a long distance to damper climates. The larger bodies of water or rivers which still have some flow will be the sites for hunters to concentrate and pursue mallard populations. Hunters may need to change their hunting locations for this year and look at going out hunting in the many harbours and tidal salt water marshes of Northland or go out in the paddock to harvest their ducks coming in to feed on maize silage or standing green feed crops. It is important that hunters know the rules and fully comply so remember that when hunting waterfowl, non-toxic shot is required (except sub gauges) when shooting over open water. This regulation

WIN

applies both to public and private land, no matter if you are the landowner. Also in the Wildlife Act of 1953 the occupier, his/her wife/husband and one son or daughter are able to hunt on their property without a hunting licence. Many landowners do not realise that the Act only allows for these three people to hunt without a licence and all other family members are required to hold a game bird hunting licence. Northland Fish and Game wishes everyone an enjoyable and safe opening weekend and remind hunters to leave the alcohol for after the firearms are put away. You can receive a copy of the game bird hunting regulations from your local sporting goods retailer, or contact Northland Fish and Game.

Kaipara company at forefront of equipment research Finnish company Nokian, is a leading manufacturer of super-heavy-duty tyres, for some of the biggest and most powerful machines in forestry and beyond. Their global reach — and the rugged nature of the industries their products are intended for — means that they must trial new tyres in the most extreme of conditions, from the freezing cold of Scandinavia to the heat of Australia. But when Nokian really wanted to put their new, ultra-durable Forest King LS-2 skidder tyres to the ultimate test,

they picked New Zealand as one of their gruelling long-term case study locations. The company they entrusted with eight of their prototypes was Gas and Tyre Services of Dargaville, a team who have built a solid reputation in the forestry industry with their fleet service. Nokian’s technicians certainly have faith in Gas and Tyre Services to see the job through. In collaboration with top Kiwi tyre distributor Tyres4U, they have brought two entire sets of Forest King LS-2s into Northland, and placed them with Douglas Logging and Omamari Logging, fitting them to a pair of hardworking skidders. Until recently, the thrust of research and development at Nokian has focussed on tyres for forwarders and harvesters — more prevalent in European logging. But when Nokian representatives visited New Zealand they saw just what a toll our steep slopes and volcanic soil can have on the skidders which are the ‘backbone’ of many local forestry operations. They were shown this in

Jeremy “Skeeter” Hutchinson of Gas and Tyre Services fits one of the new Nokian Forest King tyres to a skidder

the field by representatives from Gas and Tyres and Tyres4U. The Finns were inspired to create the Forest King LS-2, incorporating features such as a higher ply rating than competitors’ tyres, massive chip and cut resistance and reinforcing between the lugs for chain protection.

100 test prototypes have been made and shipped around the world, with almost half staying in Europe. The entire consignment of eight tyres destined for the Australasian theatre has

been entrusted to Gas and Tyre Services through Tyres4U, and now the real test begins — a long term study over the life of the tyres, carefully monitored to further improve performance. Gas and Tyre Services are honoured to be part of this process. Their hard work and solid relationship with Northland’s logging crews has earned them the respect and attention of one of the world’s leading forestry tyre corporations in this endeavour, and they are certain that the results will be outstanding.

Power costs continue to be far too high Ten years ago the average dairy farm, during the height of the milking season, spent under $1,000 per month for power. These days we are paying over twice that and it’s unlikely to get any better. As energy costs have steadily increased in New Zealand way beyond the global average and we believe this is having a serious detrimental effect on the growth and productivity of our economy. And, it’s not just farmers, most people believe that electricity prices are too high. They find it difficult to understand why the costs have escalated well above the rate of inflation since about 2002 when the government introduced the market led model. Despite obvious evidence of profit

gauging and poor capital reinvestment, politicians have steadfastly defended the current structure. Electricity is as vital to our economy as our roads and water resources. The cost of not having supply is huge. Ask those in the Far North District of New Zealand who have had to put up with a

29

Bill Guest, Farmers of New Zealand

third world electricity supply for years. The network is actually turned off for a day each year for maintenance. Close to the whole district is simply turned off! I wonder if Auckland or Wellington would find this acceptable? Power should not be managed through an artificial market model. We should simply pay the cost of supply plus what is required to maintain the current asset and build more as it is required. This “market” system based on selling kWh has serious shortcomings that should be obvious to all. All power generators get paid at the price bid by the highest bidder. Because generators only earn income when they actually generate electricity there is no incentive to build spare generation. The greater the shortage the better the price! It has been estimated that as a result of the ‘market system’ we have paid more than $4 billion more than we needed to for electricity. The market is seriously flawed and acts against the interests of the consumer and it’s about

to get worse. We are now selling half this monopolistic market system to the private sector that will by its very nature optimise profits for shareholders. As the government talks about the average ‘kiwi mum and dad investors’ getting the opportunity to be a shareholder they are unlikely to be adequately compensated for the exponentially increasing cost of power. We should not be privatising this commodity because there is simply no alternative or substitute. The market model does not work either effectively or efficiently in such circumstances. If this government was really determined to build and grow our economy to provide good well paid jobs they should not have an energy policy that escalates cost per kWh and reduces any incentive to maintain or build capacity. Our energy costs used to be one of our global competitive advantages. Due to meddling politicians this is increasingly not the case.
