Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.

Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance.

a step-by-step process to create a plan tailored to their farm and position. The plan includes tasks to make the farm safer, under areas such as legal responsibilities, health and safety and managing hazards. Safer Farms will also take the health and safety message directly to rural communities — through field days, rural retailer education, school programmes and rural industry groups who will help provide on-site training. “Safer Farms recognises that people don’t just work on farms, they also live on them,” says Mr McCone. “That is why it is no ordinary campaign. The emphasis is on information, education and forming partnerships that will make a difference, rather than just following rules. “The programme is designed to help make our farmers world leaders in managing health and safety. It will take time, but it will ultimately help implement lasting change so that farmers keep themselves, their workers and their families healthy and safe.” For more information go to saferfarms. org.nz or phone WorkSafe on 0800 030 040.

The programme was designed by WorkSafe New Zealand and the Accident Compensation Corporation, with input from the wider agricultural sector. “It is about working with farmers and rural communities so they own their health and safety,” says Safer Farms’ manager, Al McCone. “WorkSafe looked at the problem, recognised that current approaches were not working and sat down with farmers, sector groups and other stakeholders to see how they could tackle the issue while ensuring the continued success of the agriculture sector. The result is Safer Farms. “Farmers have told us they want more information and engagement. The number of deaths and injuries on farms won’t be reduced by WorkSafe sending out more inspectors. Only farmers can directly influence this toll and Safer Farms aims to help them do this.” The programme provides an easy-touse toolkit and a comprehensive online resource available at saferfarms.org.nz so farmers have clear health and safety advice and information. Council needs public feedback Funding for emergency services, new flood protection infrastructure for Kerikeri and pest management at Whangarei Heads are among several key issues in the Northland Regional Council’s 10-year plan which has been launched, and public opinion is being sought until April 24. “We’ve got some big decisions to make and we really need feedback from our communities to do it. People can have their say on all the key issues, or just the ones that interest them and they are not limited to what’s in the document,” said chairman Bill Shepherd. “Councillors formally signed off the proposals for their Long Term Plan 2015–2025, recently. Changes to the LTP process mean the council can now produce a more simple, clearer Consultation Document as the basis for that feedback. He says striking the right balance between affordability, value for money and ongoing improvement has remained a top priority for council in developing the proposals in the document. “Rather than focussing on the work we already do, which many Northlanders are already familiar with, the Consultation Document

highlights the main changes and new initiatives we’re considering and how we might fund these.” The document itself will be widely available at regional council offices and public libraries, or online at www. nrc.govt.nz/ltpfeedback. The council will hold feedback meetings in early May in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Kaikohe, Whangarei and Dargaville for those who would like to present their views to councillors in person. “While you don’t need to have given written feedback to speak at those meetings, you do need to register to do so by 3pm on Friday, April 24,” says Councillor Shepherd. Feedback can be given online using the council’s new online portal, via the Northland Regional Council Facebook page, on Twitter at NRC express or can be sent via post, email or fax. There is a feedback form at the back of the Consultation Document.

We breed 90 hinds yearly which are finished for venison and we get velvet off the breeding stags, spikers and two-year-olds. “Our focus is predominantly venison rather than velvet but there have been massive improvements in velvet prices in recent times. hand as they do not all come on at the same time. “A licence is required to remove the whole antler stick and the stag is able to regrow the velvet the next year, for around 12 years. The velvet mostly goes to China and Korea for making medicine. The venison goes to Europe and America. America is the biggest market by value but Europe by volume. At 15–18 months the deer is taken for venison. “They are very similar to running beef in general stock movements,” he says. “The breeding stags go out in midMarch with fawns starting to arrive in mid-October. They mostly produce single births and the fawns tend to stay hidden for the first 10 days, often planting themselves in long grass or bushes. This is when it is vital to be aware of where they are as ticks can smother the two to three kilogram fawn and bleed them dry of blood. Ticks and lungworm are the two main health issues deer have. “There has been massive amounts of research for the past seven to eight years on extracts from velvet for wound

healing which is getting to human trial stage. “They have been studying recovery after sports in America, with trials on grid iron footballers. Velvet supplement takers get lower lactic acid build up and return to normal health more quickly after a game.” Richard is currently the chairman for the Northland branch of the NZ Deer Farmers Association. “Deer Industry New Zealand is the corporate body which has processors and farmers on it. “The Deer Farmers Association is the farmer side and the voice for farmers — they take problems and concerns to the industry leaders in Wellington for discussion and problem solving. “The future is looking at a succession plan for retirement and working out what to do. I will always have deer, their personalities are great and they are good to work with. I also enjoy fishing and travel but my main interest is the farm and the fencing industry,” says Richard.

FARMING AT

HER BEST BY ANN MORGAN

Karla Frost is a third generation farmer who grew up on her parents’ pedigree Ayrshire cattle farm in Towai and she has won the NZ Dairy, Northland Farm Manager of the Year contest.

S

She also enjoys equestrian and outdoor activities like fishing. Farming is her life and she enjoys catching up with friends and family. She has an older brother who works for Opus Engineering and an older sister who is a nurse. “My family are very supportive of my career. My grandparents come to visit and my grandfather gives me helpful tips,” she says. This is the second year she has competed in the NZ Dairy Industry awards. Last year she came third, entering to gain experience and to get valuable feedback on how she was progressing in her career. “I like working with animals and people as it is different every day. There is a lot of hard work and it is extremely

he attended Kamo High School and gained a Bachelor of Agriscience majoring in Agriculture from Massey University. After graduating, she moved to the Australian outback where she worked for eight months experiencing life on a cattle station. On her return to New Zealand two years ago she began managing Northland’s Agricultural Research farm in Dargaville. “I always knew I would work in the dairy industry,” said Karla. “I developed a love for farming when I was young. I am in charge of milking 250 cows with two part-time staff and the position provides a challenging and educational environment.”

Karla bringing in the herd

Karla is the manager of the 85 hectare farm and is fully hands on in all areas of the property rewarding and varied. “This particular farm has a high profile and is owned by Fonterra. Everything we do has to be done to the best practice standards and decisions can’t just be made. I have learnt a lot because everything has to be justified. We need to set an example so there’s no cutting corners. “I get to work with a really great group of people as the farm itself is run by a community of industry specialists and local farmers. The learning environment is really good and I get taught by the best. As a research farm, everything is done properly and we have meetings and make decisions as a group. I then carry out the plans and make the day to day decisions. “My belief is there is no better way to learn than being hands on and

since this position is sole-charge, it is my responsibility to ensure all goals are achieved. “We have a nice crossbred herd on 84 hectares and being fully involved is all part of the job, including the management technical side. “We grow turnips and import palm kernel and maize for feed. There is a lot of recording of exactly how many kilograms of feed the cattle eat every day and we measure the grass and supplements for accuracy so we can tell how much feed gives how much productivity. We know the exact production result each amount of feed gives. “I am staying in this position for another year. We are changing to a new project of what we are researching and I will get that up and running.

“My plan is to progress through the industry and go sharemilking in the future but it will be a matter of waiting for it to be a financially feasible option and then moving up to farm ownership ideally. “Being young and female, it takes people a little while to realise I am the manager. There are not as many women in the industry but it is becoming more and more normal to have female staff. “Kaipara is a great place to live. It is close to the beaches and there is lots to do. It is close enough to home but far enough away to have my own career in the industry.” Karla is also the Whangarei Young Farmers Club chairperson and runs meetings once a month in Whangarei. She says it is a really good way to get out and meet similar minded people and be involved in the rural community.

to a larger 50% sharemilking position in the future. “I don’t think anyone was surprised when they were named the winners at the end of the night, as the merit awards proved they are very strong across all areas of their farm business,” said Northland regional managers Ian Douglas and Rowena Butterworth-Boord. Amongst the other winners were Karla Frost who won the 2015 Northland Farm Manager of the Year contest for her work on a Dargaville farm, and Mike Jensen, the region’s 2015 Dairy Trainee of the Year. The runners-up in the Northland Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year contest were Okaihau equity sharemilkers Grant and Danielle Petterd. Karla Frost will work with a group of industry experts and leading farmers as the farm manager for Northland’s Agricultural Research Farm. The Dargaville farm milks 250 cows and provides a beneficial learning environment for Miss Frost. “The work here involves incredible amounts of monitoring and recording and it is essential that everything is done accurately and in line with best practice. I believe that this is a key strength as high standards are expected

in every aspect of the farming system. I feel that there is no better way to learn and as the position is sole-charge it is my personal responsibility to ensure that this is achieved.” She says she learnt a lot by coming third in last year’s competition. “I had the chance to meet a huge range of farmers and industry specialists. The Dairy Trainee of the Year, Mike Jensen, entered the dairy awards to improve his farming skills and knowledge. The 31-year-old has previously worked as a bricklayer, construction worker and in oyster farming. Mr Jensen began his dairy farming career in 2011 and is working on a Waipapa farm owned by Peter Thorpe as 2IC, milking 500 cows. He moves to a herd manager’s role in June and aims to be contract milking within five years. “In my new role my goals for the farm are to meet my bonus targets and maintain the farm to a high standard. These targets include Somatic Cell Count, less than 10% empty rate, and a grade free season.” Runner-up in the Northland trainee contest was Maromaku 2IC Kim Simpson with Kamo farm assistant Elliot Nelson, placing third. Nor thland Sharemilker/Equity Farmers of the Year, Brad and Lesley Roberts hosted a field day on April 9, while Farm Manager of the Year, Karla Frost, had one on the Dargaville farm she manages on March 31.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Top Soil Water Retention

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Chemical production over the years has impacted heavily on our soils, soil fertility and particularly soil biology. These micro-organisms build humus levels in the soil which in turn increases the water retention quality of the soil. The more microbes, the more humus, the more moisture retained to help the farm through those dry periods. Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bring life, vitality, and water retention back to the soil. A live living soil not only holds its ground, but encourages worm life and other diverse beneficial creatures, which all help to support the soil and the plants. The plant extends a great amount of energy, captured from the sun and transferred to carbon (humus) compounds, building root cells, excreting high energy mucigel into the soil, alongside the root surface, expanding this microbial garden mulch to the benefit of both plant and microorganisms. The organisms enjoy the luxury of this highly nutritious food source which encourages microbial growth. Components of mucigel exudates are: amino acids, vitamins, sugars, tannins, alkaloids, phosphatides, indole, salicylic acid, nucleic acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, malic acid, nitric acid, citric acid — all beneficial to life both below and above the soil. In a live, living soil there are a myriad of things happening that not only benefit the plant and the micro organisms, but

transfer on as benefit for animals, farms and farmers. As the soil biology numbers grow so does the increase in soil water retention, soil drainage capacity, topsoil, carbon, nitrogen and all other minerals stored in the organic matter of the soil courtesy of the microorganisms, to be taken as required by the plant. This magic system has been pumping away on our planet for millions of years. Its Mother Nature’s formula that has not only provided for all life on the planet, but has kept it sustainable and regenerating, without external interference — how amazing is that! The United Nations have declared 2015 as the year of the soils. According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations), “soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human lifespan. As a core component of land resources, agricultural development and ecological sustainability, is the basis for food, feed, fuel and fibre production and for many critical ecosystem services.” It is therefore a highly valuable natural resource, yet it is often overlooked. The natural area of productive soils is limited. Under an agrochemical system of farming I believe that this statement would be correct. However, on a monitored dairy farm in Northland operating under a BioGro certified program, and using Agrissentials Rok Solid full spectrum solid fertiliser and our Oceans 100 liquid fertiliser, over an 8 year period we increased the topsoil of 50mm depth on a clay base, down to 200mm to 250mm deep. The soil on this farm was so alive that it was spongy to walk on and the farmer was feeding out hay from a 2 wheel drive, cut down, Toyota Lite Ace van, during winter which is unbelievable on any clay based soil in Northland. So, by using the best on earth fertilisers, the anecdotal evidence confirms that you can regenerate and increase top soil depth, for better production and it won’t take a lifetime. This month we are kicking off our national roadshow that’s coming to a town near you. Join us for a free afternoon to find out how to get better fertility & better production with John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials NZ Ltd {afternoon tea will also be provided}. The possibilities of possums The launching of a Fur Council website signifies the beginning of a united fur industry. The website aims to encourage understanding of the fur industry, whilst providing information to the public about of the unique qualities of possum fur and the benefits that fur harvesting can have on the environment. It is also hoped that the website will help increase national and international demand for New Zealand made possum products. New Zealand Fur Council chairman Neil Mackie says, “The possum fur industry is a growing industry already worth $130 million to the New Zealand economy annually. “It’s important that people understand the industry, its contribution and potential for growth. Silver Fern Farms are inviting shareholders to apply for a new Cooperative Governance Scholarship initiated by Silver Fern Farms in cooperation with the Burnside Hart Cooperative Education Trust. Up to two annual scholarships are available for farmer shareholders to assist them in applying for the Fonterra Governance Development Programme and sit for a year as an observer on the Silver Fern board. The Burnside Hart Trust is administering the scholarships, of up to $20,000 which will subsidise the course fees and board participation. The Trust is a charitable entity established in 2008 by Silver Fern Farms to advance education and leadership training to those interested in enhancing their personal and governance skills for the benefit of the primary sector. The Fonterra programme is an advanced course on cooperative governance for aspiring farmer directors. Chairman Rob Hewett says the Silver Fern board recognises a responsibility to grow the skills of aspiring farmer directors for the future. “Through the scholarship we intend to support those farmers who

want to develop their capabilities to take on significant leadership roles in agriculture in the future. It is suitable for those looking for governance roles in New Zealand agri-business cooperatives,” he said. “We need motivated farmers to take a stake in the value chain, to develop themselves so they have the skills and capacity to take a leading role in their cooperative in the future. Our business and many other agribusiness cooperatives in New Zealand are large, complex entities. “To maintain farmer control, we need to ensure our farmer shareholders have the opportunity to develop their governance skills so when opportunities in their cooperative appear, they are ready to go.” Applications are to be made through the Burnside Hart Cooperative Education Trust from March 4 closing on Monday April 20. FISHING HUNTING & DUCK SHOOTING ADVERTORIAL

Important changes to Northland Fish & Game bag limits This is due to the low number of mallards and grey ducks harvested over the past three years. During this time, Northland has seen the lowest harvest of mallards and grey ducks over the past twenty years. Reasons for this decline are uncertain, but loss of habitat has played a critical role. Also, recent droughts have left many wetlands drier than previous years thus degrading habitat. The bag limit for paradise shelducks has been raised to 25 birds per day. With the population recovering from recent declines and the increase in the number of complaints about crop damage, Northland Fish & Game Council felt that a higher limit was justified. There will still be a summer season

for Paradise Shelduck. There will be an increased opportunity to hunt black swans during the special summer season. The Northland Fish & Game Council has decided that current harvest is not keeping up with black swan reproductions, so they added them to the summer season to provide hunters with increased hunting opportunities. Northland Fish & Game enforcing game laws Each year, Northland Fish & Game rangers check game bird hunters to make sure that everyone is playing by the rules. Northland has one of the lower rates of offenders in the country, but we still find a few hunters who do not play by the rules. Hunting without a licence is the most common offence followed by using lead shot. Please remember that you are required to purchase a hunting licence and if caught your firearm will be confiscated and you may be prosecuted for offences under the Wildlife Act. By not purchasing a game bird hunting licence, you are not only stealing from others who purchase a licence, but your licence purchase goes to habitat improvement and waterfowl management to make sure that future generations can enjoy game bird hunting. Northland Fish & Game rangers will be out patrolling this year. If you are checked please thank them for volunteering

their time to protect our resources. They are a dedicated group of game bird hunters that give up their own hunting time to make sure that everyone can enjoy their sport. Land occupier rights explained In the past there has been a lot of confusion about land occupier rights when it comes to game bird shooting without a licence. The Wildlife Act 1953 states that ‘only the occupier of any land, and the spouse and any one son or daughter of the occupier may hunt on that land only without having to hold a game bird hunting licence’. The occupier is a person whose permanent and

principal place of residence is on the land including the owner, or manager, or sharemilker. Where there are several such occupiers, one of these people must be appointed to be the occupier for game bird hunting purposes in a notice signed by all of the people involved and appointed for the whole game bird season. If you have any questions about land occupier rights, feel free to contact Northland Fish & Game. Remember it is your responsibility to know the rules and regulations that surround game bird hunting.

Heavy duty diesel rolls out by Andy Bryenton

Go The Extra Yard

Kiwi farms run on diesel power — from burly utes to rugged tractors. And now a new diesel UTV brings that power to even more jobs around the farm. Adding to its already impressive range of models, Polaris have announced the impending arrival of the 2015 Ranger 1000 Diesel HD (Heavy Duty) — built specifically for the New Zealand and Australian markets. That HD tag indicates the inclusion of a suite of heavy duty upgrades, beefing up the Ranger for the hard knocks Kiwi farming is famous for. Add in electronic power steering and engine braking with 4-Wheel descent control to combat New Zealand’s hilly terrain, and this dieselpowered workhorse begins to look like just what the doctor ordered. The 2015 Ranger 1000 Diesel HD receives a number of upgrades over the 2014 model, including being built on the more modern Ranger XP platform. Styling has been given a fast-forward too, and under all that rakish bodywork sits a powerful 1,028cc Diesel Engine, up from 900 cc in the previous iteration. A massive 110 Amp Alternator is bolted to this diesel mill, cranking out the kind of power usually associated with utes. And a new, tough cab frame keeps riders safe, even in the worst conditions. With upgrades to the chassis, the Ranger 1000 Diesel HD now shares the same attributes which

 IS600 SUSPENSION MODEL (shown) From $10,499RRP  F50 NON-SUSPENSION MODEL From $8499RRP

have made the Ranger XP 900 a top choice for New Zealand farmers. This new model also boasts innovations such as a restyled cockpit for driver comfort, dual A-Arm front suspension for a smoother ride, and a larger 37.6 Litre fuel tank for longer trips between fill ups. The 1,028cc Kohler Diesel under the hood is a 3 cylinder overhead cam liquidcooled symphony of power. This proven, high performance mill utilises indirect injection to deliver smooth torque and reduced combustion noise. The big donk also delivers a class-leading 907kg towing capacity, 680kg payload capacity and helps haul a rear dump box with gas-assist dumping operation that can carry up to 454kg of materials and a full-sized pallet. That’s an impressive suite of upgrades — and more than enough reason to book a test drive with your local Polaris dealer.

Green machines a versatile choice by Andy Bryenton

There was a wealth of agricultural power on display at the recent Northland Field Days, with machines manufactured in many nations competing for attention from the farming public. But, as at immense agricultural expos such as Europe’s giant Agritechnica, one of the most noticeable brands was liveried in smart green and black. Deutz Fahr’s range of tractors lived up to their reputation as the ‘Mercedes Benz of Farming’, displaying a range which covered a wide scope of applications, from row cropping through to the toughest tasks in pasture management. It was little surprise that the big German marque put on a good showing. Their 9 series of large 270-hp-plus machines have just received the award for best design in the coveted European Golden Tractor competition. That same philosophy of meticulous engineering is apparent in the smaller, more versatile 5 and 6 series tractors which excited a lot of attention at our local Field Days.

This may be because of the advances in fuel economy, power, stability and ease of operation which have marked out Deutz Fahr as a market leading innovator. Certainly, these machines are made to pass the very stringent European Union emissions standards, and do so with a suite of technological engine advancements which also aim to save fuel. But there’s also the fact that the ‘Mercedes Benz’ comparison also extends to the comfort and logical layout of the 5 and 6 series’ cab — a place where spending hours behind the controls seems a lot less like a chore. With tractors in the ‘mid range’ horsepower band a popular choice with farmers looking for a versatile, multi-role machine, it’s good to know that, at Deutz Fahr at least, top-tier technologies aren’t

just lavished on the big 300hp beasts at the top of the intensive farming line. Awards, as Deutz Fahr knows, come and go, and there are always more to strive for.

But the measure of a good tractor is found out in the field, season by season — and that is the victory they are pursuing with their mid-sized tractors here in the Kaipara.

The 8th Australia New Zealand Institute of Foresters Conference is underway this month from 13–15 April in Creswick, Victoria, a major part of the celebrations for the Institute of Foresters of Australia’s 80th anniversary. The theme of the conference is “Beyond tenure: managing forests across the landscape”. Conference chair, Professor Rod Keenan from Melbourne University has the message that forests and trees provide many benefits for the community: water, biodiversity conservation, scenic values, agricultural production, timber and firewood, land and soil conservation and jobs in timber production or tourism. “We all share a common interest in the good management of our forest and tree resources,” he says. “With more active management across the landscape, we can do better at meeting the many expectations that the community holds for forests and trees. We can take the opportunities for investment in carbon, biodiversity or timber to expand trees and forests on private land and in urban areas.” Trees and forests grow across a wide range of ownership categories and do

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd

Remaining stable Log prices have remained mostly stable this month. Domestic prices are unchanged and export prices have dropped only NZ$2–$3 per cubic metre at the wharf gate. Meanwhile the New Zealand domestic market has very much swung to demand exceeding supply and in the export segment, very much the reverse. Export prices have been impacted by what has been a softening phase centred on a less than buoyant China demand profile. As reported last month, the situation in China is less than desirable with lack of credit and cash together with low numbers of new construction starts being the order of the day. On the positive side in tier one cities in China, house prices appear to have bottomed out and in a few cases started to lift again. Overall, the majority of comment suggests expectations and sentiment are now less negative than pre Chinese new year. However, in this key market for NZ Forest growers it is looking like it is not going to print anything other than average to mediocre for at least Q2 and Q3 in 2015.

Once again we see local sawmills offering price points that at least match and if not exceed those available at the wharf gate. However it is also important to note the local sawmills prefer the best logs in the forest or woodlot. This reflects the local focus on producing lumber for the Christchurch house framing market. Because the cartage distance is generally less to the local sawmill than the port, the forest owner can expect the best prices for this target market. Of some concern is to see the local mills almost starving for logs with some having to manage usage and supply on a day to day basis. This disturbing situation is related to forest and woodlots of lower quality being harvested and therefore a lesser percentage of higher grade logs. It is also related to a reducing forest cut, as the wind damage recovery programme draws to a conclusion.

Local sawmill prices for framing grade logs are continuing to hold in the $100+ per tonne mark. Meanwhile on the export front, CIF (landed in China) settlements have following the earlier predicted path. In February the indicator A grade settlements were mostly US$2 either side of US$125 per cubic metre, whilst March prices have been hovering between US$120 and $117. This drop reflects prices now in a 10year low on a CIF (landed in China in US$) basis. The NZ wharf gate situation has been much less pronounced with now some of the lowest shipping costs in 15 years and a declining US$/Kiwi$ exchange rate ensuring prices on a NZ$ basis have remained in a $5 per cubic metre band. The situation in China is as critical to the NZ sawmiller as it is to the log exporter. If China prices continue to drop then the harvest volumes can also be expected to decline as forest owners close their gates. This will inevitably starve the local sawmills of logs unless they can find a way to compete in the lower quality export log segment. This situation is mirrored in China, where current domestic log supply will falter if NZ and Australia log prices drop to the US$110 mark.

19

Harvest of forests in China is a significant proportion of the total cut and China has very large costs for domestic logs including often carting them over long distances. It is for this reason we believe the current situation is nearing the bottom of the current cycle. The big issue for both sides at present is that the current situation in China is not log price but demand. For a China sawmill owner the majority of cutting is done to order in a factory style basis. At present post CNY orders have started to come in but they are often small and short term. In this context, if the sawmill does not have any orders, then they will not want logs at any price. It is therefore a major turnaround in demand that everyone is looking out for. I will be in the China market late March so will be able to report more in next month’s report. It continues to be thoroughly important to remember the trees keep growing regardless and peoples of the world continue to need wood for wide ranging reasons. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember, the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees!

Rust in machinery and associated metalwork is a rural worry, and fortunately there’s an answer available — Corrosion X.

Kathryne Easton has a strong attachment to Northland, having been brought up on a dairy and beef property in the area.

It’s used successfully among myriad users, Silver fern Farms, NIWA, the US Navy, Whangarei District Council, Turiwiri Produce, The Australian Airforce, Manaia Farms, Kono Nghai Tahu, Kingsalmon, and Ports of Nelson. What do they have in common? Simple: Rust problems on very hard working gear, and an environmentally friendly answer. CorrosionX is safe and easy to use, easy on the wallet and lasts so much longer than traditional rust preventers. It is Ministry of Primary Industries approved, food safe, safe over rubber/neoprene seals and insulation, waterproofing electronics, and helps to resurrect machines and electrics after floods. Lubrication factor is some three times better than engine oil. CorrosionX also stops electrolysis and you can weld over it. Quickly sprayed as rust protection underneath an already rusty cow shed roof or into your dripping wet 4WD cavities, it also keeps your farm bike, outboard, genset and drain pump in mint condition and reliable when it really matters. Northlands mobile service for CorrosionX is up and running through Zane Gaylor of XFarms Dargaville,

She is now part of the Total Ag team as their dairy expert, advising farmers in the Northland and Waikato regions about farm and nutrient management. “Total Ag provides me with the opportunity to get alongside clients, helping them manage the changes coming on farms regarding nutrient management, while also ensuring they have businesses that are highly profitable and rewarding on every level,” says Kathryne. She has a wealth of knowledge through her previous positions which include Ballance AgriNutrients, land management advisory for the Northland Regional Council, and sustainable dairy advisory for Fonterra, working with farmers to reduce their environmental footprint and optimise their nutrient inputs. Her new role includes looking at farm systems, farm and financial management, cash flow forecasting through to dairy shed compliance and any other areas farmers require advice with such as effluent ponds, land management and fencing off waterways. “She is very strong in land management, including nutrient budgeting and assessing nutrient loads for dairy farm systems,” said fellow Total Ag consultant Aaron Baker. “Farmers are facing increasing regulations for which Kathryne can help them prepare. We are encouraging our clients to be proactive now rather than when things change. “Prospective farm buyers may not be aware of the resource consent or know the implications of increasing cow numbers on a

Stop the landslide of soil carbon losses

NEW TRUCK ON ROAD

Most people have never heard of the biological sigmoid curve, the reason for this is that all Universities and Government Departments don’t teach it. For example we have know for 60 year that overgrazing cause desertification of soils, and most people would blame animals for this which is totally false, and in fact animals managed correctly are being used to restore desert soils back to productive carbon sequestering soils in a matter of years. The interesting thing here is why isn’t this taught at University and/ or Government level? We are told by environmental authorities like Environment Waikato, that riparian plantings are the answer to our water quality issues. This is nothing but absurd and blinkered hopeful thinking. The issue is the whole catchment area and the sigmoid biological curve of this catchment. The critical point here is how important it is to manage the first one to two metres of the top of these catchment areas. If these can’t be achieved the rest of the system is destined to fail. We need to start a re-education process for our pastoral farmers and show how important it is to get rotational grazing lengths correct. Most farms are losing the potential of thousands of kilos of DM growth because they graze their paddocks too early (i.e. 2,500kgDM/ha instead of 4,000– 5,000kgDM/ha). We hear arguments that the pasture at 4,000kgDM/ha are past their best and cattle won’t perform on these so called rank pastures.

However when you put these types of feed through a laboratory we then find out that the Acid Detergent Fibre [ADF] and Neutral Detergent Fibre [NDF] levels are at their best for a ruminant. After all that is what a cow is, a massive big mobile microbial incubating chamber, and it is from this degradation of plant tissue that we get the production of milk and meat. This type of feed actually feeds the cow more effectively than some grass force fed on nitrogen. These types of grass feeds contain excessive levels of nitrate-nitrogen resulting in MUN [milk urea nitrogen] and BUN [Blood urea nitrogen]. Problem being the international recommended levels for MUN is 10– 15mg/decilitre of milk, however some data we obtained shows the New Zealand levels are exceeding 30–40mg/decilitre of milk.

Focus on Effluent

New force in Kaipara farming

by Andy Bryenton

After an extensive period of renovation and upgrades, an unassuming building on the approach to Dargaville is now home to a new branch of a dynamic Northland rural support company,

bringing new expertise and new products to the aid of Kaipara farmers. “It was important that we used the services of local tradespeople during our renovation,” says Northland Farm Services owner and manager Bronwyn Shaw.

“Not only have they helped us do a great job getting ready for our grand opening, but it was also a chance to build bridges, meet the locals and establish ties with the community.” That kind of hyper-local attitude has seen the company, which Bronwyn and husband Garry bought over 25 years ago, become a familiar name to farmers both here, and in their Whangarei base of operations. Strategically allied with big names in farming, such as Waikato Milking systems, the Northland Farm Services team reasoned that the time was right for an expansion. The company’s level of expertise is formidable, covering all manner of important facets of the rural industry. From effluent systems to valves and pump fittings, milking systems through to water filtration and irrigation, there’s a wealth of good advice to back up the stockpile of product in their new Dargaville branch. Of special consideration right now is the issue of

water exclusion — one which is set to come under increased scrutiny from industry giant Fonterra in their ongoing push for quality management. But in designing, sourcing and installing all manner of on-farm systems, Bronwyn’s team — headed up by new Dargaville store manager Denise Trumper — reckon they have the territory covered from start to finish. With the paint dried, the signs going up, and a showroom full of top-flight products ready to hit the field, Northland Farm Services plan for further expansion in the near future, replacing their rotation of technical staff out of Whangarei with newly trained and accredited locals. The challenges of today, and of tomorrow, will be all the more simple to overcome with a top team on call. “After all, dairying is cyclical,” says Bronwyn. “We have seen the ups and downs over twenty five years, and we are here to help farmers get through.” GLOBAL PUMP SOLUTIONS

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Two secrets to healthy hooves We all know that having a healthy herd is paramount to good business. There is also the feel good factor knowing that you are looking after your animals. A key part of herd health is the hoof. We all know that a cow with a damaged hoof can spell disaster. So how do we combat this? The answer is to take a holistic approach to healthy hooves. Below are two important points that help avoid lameness. Firstly, nutrition is a key element in the equation. We have all heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’. Well this is not quite the same with dairy cows, but you could say that the better the food (or nutrition) the healthier your dairy cows will be. This in turn means that your cows’ hooves are also going to be healthier. There is common perception that hoof damage is caused by rough tracks and constant walking to and from the milking sheds. However, we now know that this is incorrect. Hoof damage starts from the inside out — not from the outside in. This is where nutrition comes into play. If your dairy cows are in optimal condition

then their hooves will be strong and healthy and be able to resist the normal wear and tear of everyday walking. This is not to say that having good, well maintained tracks and sheds doesn’t aid in the prevention of lameness. Research shows that tracks with a higher crown through the middle help to reduce the amount of lameness. A holistic or combined approach is always best. However, the main point is, proper nutrition is very important. The best method of feeding is one that avoids rumen upset. Careful phasing of the herd between feed types will help to avoid this problem. Secondly, curbing excessive hoof growth is also a key element in the equation. Let’s face it a dairy cow weighs a lot. Each hoof has to hold a lot of weight. On each hoof the weight burden is spread between the two claws. You can imagine that if one claw becomes higher than the other then the weight will be unevenly distributed —

WATER STORAGE PROBLEMS?

the higher claw will carry more weight. And what happens when that single claw starts to be put under more pressure? It grows even more — to try and cope with the extra weight. Eventually the higher claw will start to buckle and falter under the extra weight resulting in lameness. This is where hoof maintenance comes into play. We call it preventative trimming. Hoof trimming ensures that both claws on each hoof are even and in the best shape for distributing the weight equally. Without correct trimming lameness can be rampant amongst dairy herds, leading to lots of lost production. In summary it is important to remember that correct nutrition is very important in order to keep the cows in optimum health and to avoid rumen upset. This coupled with preventative hoof trimming will significantly reduce the amount of lameness in your herd. For more help with dairy cow lameness, feel free to call me on 0800 833 463.

They called it ‘Batten King’. “It now takes less than one minute per batten to be attached to the fence and it is a one man operation,” says Mr Neal. “The tool works as a platform providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun and it is an easier way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the wood in place.” “It is attached by hooks to one fence wire, allowing the staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner. The tool helps lessen the risk of injury through jarring or accidentally hitting hands or legs with a hammer, and it allows one person to do the job of two, reducing labour and time for the fencer.” “Batten King is new to the market and is a must for every fencer because it enables people to do their own fencing quickly and cuts down costs,” he says. For more information contact Brian on 09 534 5908 or email nealmfg@ xtra.co.nz.

National alpaca open day by Ayla Miller

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

Alpaca owners throughout New Zealand will be opening their farms to the public on May 3 promoting the animals, fibre and other products. It is one day a year where everyone can celebrate alpacas. The open day aims to raise awareness of the animal and give people the opportunity to learn more about them. Four Northland farms have registered at the time of print — Silverhill, Waitakere, Gumtree Gully and Kerdon. Valerie Bushell runs the majority of Silverhill farm on her own and hand knits items for her onsite store. She has been keeping alpacas for ten years. Her farm is dedicated to breeding fine, densely fleeced, coloured alpacas, and is located at 739 Silver Hill Road, RD4 Wellsford. “It is free entry and there will be talks about how to look after them,” she says. “We have a few young ones expected to be born near the end of April.” Her farm shop specialises in knitted accessories, baby items, yarn and carded fibre. Waitakere Alpacas will be opening their gates displaying their herd of more than 240, located at 107 Monk Road, RD1 Waioneke, South Head, Helensville. “They are lovely, friendly, gentle and easy to farm. With a small amount of basic animal husbandry, they can be ideal pets for a lifestyle block,” says owner Hans Roecoert. Hans is very knowledgeable and is keen to share this with those interested in purchasing Alpacas for themselves. Gumtree Gully Alpacas, a small but growing family run business at 161 Cowan Bay Road, Warkworth RD3, Auckland, will offer visitors the chance to get to know the animals.

“It will be an educational and handson day and a good family day out,” says owner Kathy who runs the farm with her husband Phil. Kerry and Donna Tannion started with a few male alpacas as pets but like many others before them couldn’t resist increasing their herd and in 2009 Kerdon Alpacas was formed. Their farm is located at 61 Hurndall Street East, Maungaturoto. “There will be products for sale including knitted products, felted alpaca scarves and unique alpaca artworks,” says owner Donna.

Ready for the Rain ADVERTORIAL

Time for change

For

Plumbing Roofing & Drainage

Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

Each change of season marks a good time to do a bit of maintenance on pumps and water filtration equipment. At Pump & Purify, we recommend taking the opportunity to see if filters need replacing, give the housings and UV system a clean, and assess whether your system is still meeting your requirements. Filter housings do not need chemical washes. Prepare before shutting off the water by collecting and boiling a quantity of water. Remove the old filters, wash the housings out thoroughly with dishwashing detergent and hot water, flush them thoroughly to eliminate any soap residue, if possible dry in the sunlight, or otherwise with a clean cloth, and replace the filters. Check all the connectors for any leaks, and if necessary reapply thread seal tape and tighten. No point in wasting water! Using chemicals such as chlorine can introduce contaminants back into new filters, and is in most cases unnecessary if regular maintenance has been performed. Chlorine also breaks down rubber and can damage seals in pumps, and bladders in pressure tanks. Perhaps you do not have a filtration system yet, or only a basic system? Maybe you want to consider adding another stage, or adding UV. After such a hot dry summer, your roof has not had regular ‘washing’ by the rain, tanks will be low, and contaminants sitting in the bottom will get stirred up. This is the perfect time for waterborne bacteria and viruses to be introduced to your drinking water and make you and your family sick. Sediments and chemicals that may have drifted on to the roof may also damage your pump

Attracting dairy workers

29

Faced with the need for more workers in the industry, Federated Farmers and Dairy NZ with other industry bodies will release the dairy industry’s newly developed Quality Workplace Accord in the near future. “We are faced with attracting a further 8,300 qualified workers to the industry by 2025. To do that we have to show prospective and existing industry participants that dairy farming is an attractive, exciting industry that offers a good work-life balance and the opportunity for significant career advancement,” says Federated Farmers Employment spokesperson and Manawatu dairy farmer, Andrew Hoggard. “The accord aims to help dairy farmers lift the overall performance of the industry in employment standards and people management to a point where there is a genuine quality work environment. “It is no different to any other goals we have set and every farm is individualistic. These are strategies and objectives with aspirational goals around what we think a quality workplace will look like in the future. It is information for farmers to utilise. “What it comes down to, is that the dairy industry wants to set itself a goal to achieve quality work environments through helping farmers implement good people management practises. “The Quality Workplace Accord is the signatories’ commitment to support

the industry as it advances to reach optimum employment practices, to attract quality people to the industry.” Mr Hoggard says the Accord also provides a framework to show the industry’s 12,000 diverse business units how to get better results from their recruitment and retention. “By making their work environments stand out from the array of other options presented to talented people, farm employers will be able to pick the cream of the crop.” Developed and signed by Dairy NZ and Federated Farmers, among other industry players, The Dairy Industry Strategy 2013–2020, makes the attraction and retention a central theme — vital to the success of the dairy industry. “There are some great dairy farmer employers out there but for many they need the tools and support to make the work environment on their farm something to be proud of, which is what this Workplace Accord is aiming to achieve,” said Mr Hoggard. The final Quality Workplace Accord will be available to dairy farmers on Federated Farmers’ and Dairy NZs’ websites in the near future.

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Keep it in a Trust.

0800 737 738 www.perpetualguardian.co.nz

Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening

your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.
